Round Up and Chow Down Savor the flavors of the Western frontier. Make a mess at cooking camp and see what edible adventures and campfire treats await. See what the West has cooking in this class tailored for young chefs. Campers learn the West’s history through stories, taste sampling, and completing simple recipes inspired or borrowed from favorite chuck wagons. Campers examine real tools and objects from the cowboy kitchen while exploring the galleries. Tales and Trails Journals, stories, tall tales, and myths are the start of fantastic comic books and creative writing. From the Chisholm Trail to Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley, learn about the many tall tales and colorful figures from the historic West. Campers are inspired to create their own stories and comics from daily adventures as they construct their own images of Western culture.
Myths and Legends Folklore abounds in the many cultures of the West. Campers explore traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of community passed from generation to generation and how shared memory is preserved and passed on. From the Southwest to the Northeast, explore customs and oral traditions through folklore. Recreate historic examples to share your own story. No prior art or craft experience is needed.
Weaving and Beading Get an introduction to some of the most iconic Western art forms that cross different cultures. Inspired by Museum artifacts and gallery visits, create traditional arts that explore design, color, and pattern using weaving and beading techniques. No prior art or craft experience is needed.
Naturally Native Campers explore Western folklore, map making, journaling, design crafts, Native foods, and more. Tales of conquest, survival, persistence, and the merging of peoples and cultures are explored through art projects. This camp celebrates the first people in the West with an introduction to the many regionalized tribes of America.
Western-Inspired Art From pottery to landscape and sculpture, take a piece of the American West home each day. Historic and contemporary Western artists from different cultures make their marks and leave their legends. Campers learn to identify historical elements within art works and interpret their own with paintbrushes, sketchbooks, and imaginations. Explore a variety of art media. No prior art experience is necessary.
Photo Boot Camp Point, click, and shoot! Journeys around the Museum provide plenty of inspiration for scrapbooks, collages, and photo sessions. Learn the many ways photography was used in the past and is part of the fabric of life today. Using examples from the galleries, learn about photography as a historical tool, art form, and storytelling medium. Campers are inspired to tell their own stories and create a scrapbook for their finished works.
