Awesome and Serious Games Just like today’s kids in the New West, the children of the Old West played with toys and games. Make and try classic games such as stick and hoop, wolf and rabbit, and others that get the blood pumping and the imagination running! The past comes alive when we learn about the entertainment of yesteryear. No batteries required. Cowhand Couture Saddle and buckle up to discover ranch life through crafts, cowboy and cowgirl garb and gear, and art of the West. Learn what it was like to live in the 1800s. Ever dream of being a real cowboy or cowgirl? Experience some of the jobs of the cowboy, try the clothing, and practice messy and daily chores through gallery and outdoor adventures, and acting in Prosperity Junction, the Museum’s Western frontier town. Take-home crafts and imaginative play bring the past to life. Gardening Down and Dirty Construct a toad abode, bird feeder, Western terrarium, and more during this nature-inspired camp. Explore our trails and gardens. Become an expert on the natural world of the American West. Learn about a variety of flora, their uses, and plant your own to take home. Campers are treated to take-home crafts that invite us outdoors with bird houses and nature prints. Getting Around in the West Investigate things that go – fast and slow! Trains, wagons, horses, rafts, and steamboats are the subjects during this make-and-race camp. From the Oregon Trail to the Chisolm Trail, getting around in the West wasn’t always easy! Campers learn about our expansion into the West through maps, life-sized locomotives, horses, and chuck wagons in our Western town. Things really get moving with stories and fun crafts.
Myths and Legends Be a folklorist extraordinaire by exploring things that people traditionally believe and do. Make totems, paint hides, create a toad abode, and construct a small boat. Campers are challenged with new vocabulary and geography as they learn about many tribes within the regions of America. From the Southwest to the Northeast, try dialect, learn cultural words, and explore customs and oral traditions through folklore. Naturally Native Campers explore folklore, make maps, bind journals, create spirited tales and inspired crafts, and sample Native foods. Tales of conquest, survival, persistence, and the merging of peoples and cultures are explored through art projects. From fields to farms, ranches to towns, this sessions celebrates the first people in the West with an introduction to the many regionalized tribes of America as campers travel across the West. One Room School House Adventure Camp Experience a typical day in a one-room schoolhouse. Use a slate to write, participate in recitations and a spelling bee, and enjoy an old-fashioned recess, all in period clothing! This camp is the real deal, down to carrying lunch in a basket. Visit the Cowboy Corral and perform chores before and after school. Experience school as Laura Ingalls Wilder, Tom Sawyer, and Huck Finn did (had he gone to class). This is the kind of “summer school” that campers love. Learn and play the old fashioned way. Bet you never knew school could be this cool!
Leather Working Lace, stitch, strike, and stamp different projects every day. Explore trades and use tools and techniques to leave your mark on tanned leather. Learn the fundamental skills you need to start working with leather by making simple accessories you can customize! Campers discover the skills of cutting leather, gouging, folding, hand-sewing, gluing, riveting, adding hardware, and creating simple details.

More Information Join today and take advantage of discounts for Museum members! nationalcowboymuseum.org/membership Should siblings attend camp together? When there is more than one child in a family, consider whether it is better for children to attend camp together, or to be able to be creative individually. Sometimes parents prefer for children to be away from other siblings to enjoy their “own” camp experience because there is more to show, and talk about, later as a family. Register online at nationalcowboymuseum.org/summercamp Registration is complete when the Museum receives the medical and photo release consent form, and the registration is acknowledged by staff.
Cancellation For a full refund, the Museum requires notice at least four weeks before the first day of the session for which each child or adult is registered. No refunds are given after this date, but the Museum will provide an acknowledgement letter for the tax-deductible donation to the Museum. Camp T-shirts Each child receives one National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Camp T-shirt. Please indicate shirt size on the camp registration form. Questions?
