DAY 3

Fisherman of the Year title is yours to catch

T

he Fisherman of the Year competition pits attendees against each other in the ultimate battle, putting three skills to the test: the ability to mend a rim-racked net, accurately tie a set of strong knots (to simulate a moonless night on the high seas, contestants are blindfolded) and splice a line. Only three fishermen will make it to the final round to demonstrate a skill that could save their lives one day, putting on a survival suit in record time. Experts say fishermen need to be able to get into an immersion suit in a minute; some contestants have halved that time in previous years. The competition starts Friday at high noon on the main stage. Compete or cheer on your favorite crewman. — Samuel Hill

Farewell to a leader

I

Alaska fisherman and artist Whitney Anderson poses with her salmon collage in the East Hall Fisherman’s Lounge at Pacific Marine Expo on Friday, Nov. 18.

n 1970, 19-yearold Nick Delaney entered the fishing industry by opting to jig halibut solo out of an open wooden skiff Nick Delaney in Kodiak. In the 46 years that followed, he became a leader in the fishing community, a respected business partner with Alaskan Leader Fisheries, and beloved husband, father and friend. Delaney, 65, died peacefully in hospice on Nov. 8, after a short battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed. — Jessica Hathaway
