elcome to Pacific Marine Expo, the only trade event dedicated exclusively to the Pacific maritime industry and the largest and longest running commercial marine tradeshow on the West Coast. We are so excited to be back. This year I am happy to report that once again the show continues to grow with over four hundred industry leading exhibitors displaying in over 60,000 square feet here at Lumen Field Event Center.

As you explore the show floor, you’ll discover a diverse array of products and services, including marine engines, propulsion systems, electronics, safety gear, wearables, and much more. We firmly believe that there’s no better place to equip yourself and your vessel for what lies ahead in 2024 and we’re so thrilled you’ve decided to spend the next three days doing just that with friends and colleagues at Expo.

If you’ve joined us in previous years, you’ve likely taken part in our post-event surveys, which greatly inform our planning. In 2022, our free Education Program was exceptionally well-received, and this year, we’ve expanded our lineup of keynote sessions on the Main Stage in the Alaska Hall. These sessions will cover an array of topics, from Mental Health for Commercial Fishermen to the transition of Commercial Fishing Vessels to Electric power, along with a captivating panel discussion on Alaska Fisheries, aimed at separating fact from fiction.

Furthermore, we’re introducing a new educational opportunity this year, known as “Dockside Chats,” hosted in the National Fisherman Wheelhouse at booth #150.

These intimate, small-group sessions will address the day-to-day questions and concerns relevant to your industry, covering everything from fishing to finance to family. We hope you take advantage of this innovative way to connect one-on-one with your peers from across the country.

Finally, rounding out the Expo experience is the Coastal Challenge sponsored by the Port of Seattle. The Coastal Challenge is the re-imagined and expanded version of our fan favorite Fisherman of the Year contest. What does that mean for the commercial fishing industry?

Understanding these new regulations can be confusing and overwhelming, but there are ways to approach integration that won’t cause unnecessary disruption. Ports will develop infrastructure and operational practices that promote clean and resilient operations. Commercial fishing vessels can be retrofitted with new technologies, and new, more efficient vessels will be built to run on the available and foreseen fuel supplies. Similarly, shipyards are embracing sustainable principles in the construction and retrofitting of vessels.

If safe, reliable, and affordable next-generation propulsion solutions are going to be developed, fishermen need to be at the helm, and early adopters need support. In the short term, electrification will demonstrate the fishing industry’s leadership and commitments to sustainability. In the long term, you’ll be saving money and operating more efficiently overall.

Alaska fisheries: Separating fact from fiction Nov. 9, 10:30 AM - 11:15 PM ➜ Main Stage Commercially important fish stocks have been known to wax and wane over the years, and that has happened in a big way in recent years with the cancellation of Alaska’s snow and king crab seasons and other marine ecosystem changes. Sensational headlines have declared that such developments signal the imminent demise of Alaska fisheries, but there have been success stories as well. While climate-driven changes in the marine and freshwater environment have caused chinook and chum stocks to decline in the Yukon River, Bristol Bay fishermen harvested a record number 57 million sockeye in 2022. Other species, such as sablefish have also shown signs of significant

Given all of this info, what’s the accurate state of the rest of Alaska’s fisheries? What is the future for the stocks that are in flux? What’s the proper management response to changes in the climate and fish markets? Hear the answers to these questions as well as an exploration of topics like: • How climate change has impacted Alaska’s marine ecosystems that affect fisheries • The potential for predicting impacts of changing climate for certain species and areas • The impact of extreme events on stocks that were already in decline and some, like snow crab, that had recent increases in recruitment A panel of experts from NOAA Fisheries will talk through all of these issues to provide insights into what these facts and perceptions mean for potential changes to Alaska fishery regulations, what sustainable fisheries management looks like in the short term as well as how all of it should impact long-term planning for commercial fishermen.

National Fisherman Highliner represents a seasoned commercial fisherman with a remarkable commitment to supporting the fishing industry, be it on a local, national, or global scale. This achievement is no small feat and warrants due recognition. The tradition of acknowledging leaders within the commercial fishing sector dates back to 1975 when it was a closed process. However, this year, the NF team has opened up nominations to the broader community, marking a significant shift to bridge the generations of fishermen more effectively.

National Fisherman is set to host a special award ceremony on the Main Stage, dedicated to celebrating the tireless efforts and unwavering dedication of these Highliners to the commercial fishing trade. You can catch these outstanding individuals in the spotlight on Wednesday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Matt Alward / Alaska Matt Alward’s fishing career began as a crew member almost three decades ago. His passion for fishing led him to become a skilled captain and owner of Alward Fisheries and Just Knots LLC. Based in Homer, Alaska, Matt holds the position of President of the United Fishermen of Alaska and a member of the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation.

Through his extensive background in the commercial fishing industry, he has made significant contributions to sustainable fisheries management and the overall growth of the fishing community in Alaska.

Matt has instilled his love for fishing within his family by raising his kids on the back of the boat fishing for salmon, herring, and halibut. He is recognized in his community for actively working to better the local, state, and federal fisheries over the past decade.

Curt Brown / Maine Curt Brown is a lifelong Mainer, commercial lobsterman, marine biologist for Ready Seafood, and Chairman of the Alliance for Maine’s Marine Economy.

When he began fishing at 8 years old, his passion for lobstering sparked his interest in science. After obtaining a master’s degree in marine biology and marine policy from UMaine, Curt has worked tirelessly on policy and sustainability initiatives since 2015 to preserve this way of life for his children and future generations.

While still fishing 500-traps off the coast of Maine, Curt has worked closely with state and federal lawmakers and Ready Seafood customers to tell the story of sustainable Maine lobster. Curt has also been committed to spending his days between science and the fishing industry to push the ever-evolving endeavor of improving the overall sustainability of a resource that supports many Maine families and small businesses. As of late, Curt traveled to Washington, DC, to testify on behalf of Maine’s lobster industry to share the long history of the state’s conservation efforts.

Jimmy Hull / Florida Since the age of 10, Jimmy Hull has had a passion for being on the water.

Jimmy had been exploring the waterways around the Halifax River and Ponce Inlet as a young teenager, and by 20 years old, he became a commercial fisherman and obtained his captain’s license to run his own charter business. He has been committed to the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council by attending most meetings. He is a member and chair of the Snapper/ Grouper Advisory Panel, as well as the NOAA Highly Migratory Species Panel.

When Jimmy isn’t fishing, he is focused

Meet the 2023 Highliners 13 on his wholesale, retail, and restaurant called Hull’s Seafood, as well as participating in cooperative research projects federally and within Florida. He has made some waves along the South Atlantic coast by being informed and making a positive difference in the fishery management process. He has worked tirelessly to inform better the science of our fisheries stocks that fishermen observe daily.

Michael (MJ) Jackson / Alaska Michael (MJ) Jackson has been a career commercial fisherman since 1979 and continues to fish Bristol Bay for salmon, groundfish, and crab. He is known for making substantial contributions toward improving Alaska’s salmon fishery. He has been on the board of the Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association since 2018 and served as the president of the board since 2020. MJ has been an ultra-dedicated force by advocating for Bristol Bay fishermen and helping create a safe and sustainable fishery that will be around for generations to come. He has helped the Bay flourish despite challenges such as COVID, Pebble Mine, market swings, and regulatory and policy issues among fisheries.

MJ has spent countless hours volunteering within his community and has never been afraid to stand up for what is right. MJ’s passion for the commercial fishing industry has inspired many, but most notably his two sons, who are boat and permit owners following in their dad’s footsteps.

Maggie Raymond / Maine Maggie Raymond was a vital member of the New England fishing community for over 27 years by groundfish fishing. In addition to her experience as a commercial fisherman, she has helped those actively working in the industry navigate many management changes over the years. Maggie has helped bridge the gap between fishermen and scientists through her knowledge of the complex fishing industry. She was the former executive director of the Associated Fisheries of Maine, is a board member of the Maine Fishermen’s Forum, and has over 25 years of participating on the New England Fishery Management Council’s numerous panels.

Maggie has forever been dedicated to both the commercial fishing industry and sustainable fisheries management.

She works tirelessly and quietly to advance the priorities of those she represents and is knowledgeable and prepared for every situation where she brings something forward.

This state-of-the-art vessel blends tradition and innovation, thanks to its unique design, powerhouse engines, and cutting-edge features.

am Hagen wasn’t born into a fishing family, but he was born into a fishing community, Homer, Alaska. “I worked as a deckhand for seven years,” says Hagen. “Then I bought my first boat. I sold that and bought a tender with the intention of getting back to a seiner. Finally, we pulled the trigger on this one.”

Originally intended to be a 46-foot seiner, Hagen added another four feet to the design, and decided to power his vessel with a pair of 625-hp Volvo Penta D11B1-A MP engines with ZF325-1 gears at 3.125:1, and Hill Innovations HI501 jets.

While other seiners are being equipped with jets, Hagen believes he may be the first out of the gate.

“We hoped we could build it in one winter,” he says.

“But overall, it took 15 months. We fished about two thirds of the 2023 season.” Hagen notes that nobody builds a boat alone and he is indebted to many local companies, and members of his family and community.

Starting with the design, Hagen made a foam model of the boat he wanted and took it to Brad Conley at Bay Weld Boats in Homer, Alaska, where he used to work. “Brad created the files for the sides and bottom for a 48-footer. I’m eternally grateful to him because without him it would have been much harder.”

That was in 2019. Hagen sat on the files for almost two years before he finally sent them to be cut in 2021. He had settled on a 50’x18.5’ shallow draft twin jet seiner/tender, but adding four feet to the boat meant he and the team at Alaska Metal Works (AKMW) in Homer had to fill in the blanks, as well as design the deck and wheelhouse. “It was originally intended to be a jitney boat, a small seiner that fishes up in stream mouths and shallow water, but we decided that a boat like that might not have the same value as a regular seiner if we had to sell.

We ended up with the shallow draft of a jitney — there’s only four and half inches of deadrise from the keel to the chine — but more of regular seiner, though not a limit seiner.”

At Alaska Metal Works, Johnny Kraning, Leo Cooper, Titus McGhee, Ian Taylor, and Hagen built the bulkheads and framing, and welded on the aluminum plate. “We used 5086, 1/4-inch on the bottom,” says Hagen. “And 5086 3/16 on the side

The AKMW crew also added a 3/8-inch double skin to the ¼-inch transom. “To protect it from the seine skiff banging against it,” says Hagen. To protect the hull, Danny Buckwalter at Northwest signs and vinyl, put a vinyl skin on the boat. “It’s kind of holographic,” Hagen says. “Which goes great with the boat, because the boat is named Phosphorescence.”

For power, Hagen opted for the pair of 625-hp Volvo Penta D11s, ZF gears, and Hill jets previously mentioned. “I went with the Volvos because after asking around and doing my research they were the best priced engine for horsepower I could get.”

Hagen bought the Volvo Pentas and worked with Pacific Power Group and In Demand Marine on many of his engine and gear needs. “I went with the Hill 501 jets because I have seen Jason Hill’s jets in action and I know what they can do,” says Hagen, noting that having worked with Jason on previous projects, he was confident in getting good customer service. “I could have gone with a different power package,” he says. “But this really fit the bill as far as the kind of boat I was envisioning.”

Hagen positioned the jets as deep into the hull as he could get them, to avoid getting the net tangled in them. “AKMW welded the transom to the very most aft side of the jet housing, pushing

the jet further into the engine room compartment,” says Hagen. “Next we added doubler plates to the jet housing and made a reverse shoot that falls directly inline with the jet when the bucket is down and in full reverse.” According to Hagen, this forces all the water for the jet forward when in reverse.

“Other boats have done this, but where AKMW did it different is our shoots are about 2.5-feet long,” he says.

To run the hydraulics, the Phosphorescence has two FluiDyne 35/45 pumps jackshaft driven via Pitts electric clutches from main engines. “We worked with Desperate Marine here in Homer and set up pumps so both could feed into the system or it could run on just one in case you have a breakdown, which we did.” The hydraulic system drives the deck gear, the seine block, winches, and also two cranes. “They’re for tendering,” says Hagen. “I bought them used from Trident and got them rebuilt at Desperate Marine.”

For seining, Hagen has an 8-inch aluminum pipe main boom fit with stainless steel hydraulic tubing, a Rotzler TH2 topping winch, vang winches, and a 26-inch Marco seine block with a gripper wheel.

“We fish a full depth seine,” says Hagen. “Three strips. It’s a little much but so far we haven’t had any trouble. Bullet Proof Nets, which is now owned

by LFS, made it.”

Boats & Gear \ Around the Yards 15 AKMW added another innovation on the picking booms for the seine and for tendering. “We have three winches on each picking boom, two to bring in fish and one for raising and lowering the picking boom,” says Hagen. “Normal picking booms have pulleys and cleats and you usually have to climb up to adjust them. These picking booms are hydraulic power for adjustment up and down, much like a main boom with a topping winch.”

The mast has a crow’s nest for spotting fish, and AKMW made it enclosed. “We did a lot of things different,” says Hagen. “The entry way to the wheelhouse goes through the free-standing mast and actually makes it stronger, Brad Conley did that design. We enclosed the crow’s nest so you don’t mind being up there when the weather’s bad.” According to Hagen the idea was to get ahead on design and have a boat that was not outdated in ten years. “Things are always changing,” he says.

Besides two Volvo Pentas, the Phosphorescence also has a 35kW Northern Lights genset that powers the crew accommodations and a 20-ton IMS refrigerated seawater (RSW) system to chill the catch. “The boat holds 93 thousand pounds,” says Hagen. “It’s got two fish holds, the forward

one holds 56 thousand, the aft one holds 37 thousand. I just have the one divider, no baffles.

I can run slack tank with no problem. We fish mostly in Prince William Sound, if we fished Kodiak it might be different.”

Hagen usually fishes with a crew of three or four, besides himself, sometimes more when his wife and four children come along. “The boat can sleep eight,” says Hagen. “There’s four bunks in the bow, the settee in the galley can turn into a double bunk, and there’s a double bunk in the wheelhouse. When the kids are there, they all sleep on the floor and the baby with my wife and I.” The Phosphorescence wheelhouse is unique in that there is no wheel. “It has a new Glendinning steering system. I have a joystick and jog lever,” says Hagen. “With the joystick I can twist it, power ahead, reverse. I use the steering lever and engine controls, but the joystick can override those.”

The Phosphorescence electronics package includes three Icom M330G VHFs and an Icom M510 with a command microphone in the crow’s nest. “We went with Garmin for the radar, plotter and down sounder,” says Hagen. “And we have side viewing down sounders but we didn’t have them

ready this past season.”

The Phosphorescence also has Garmin Reactor 40 Autopilot, a Victron Energy Cerbo GX remote battery monitor, Fusion wi-fi, Sirius XM satellite stereo with flush mounted speakers.

John Larson of Alaska Marine Electrical in Homer did all the wiring on the boat, including lighting in the fish hold and innovative deck lighting. “We put lights down in the hold because the deck lights never shine all the way in there,” says Hagen. “I didn’t want the guys to have to go down there with headlamps. And we put light under the rails that shine on the deck, and you don’t need big bright lights blinding you. And they’re good for when you’re moving and you don’t want to attract a lot of attention.”

Phosphorescence fished its first season in Prince William Sound this year, and like the rest of the fleet, had to deal with terrible prices. “We were above average. My younger brother had a good season. We didn’t do as good as him. I got beat by my little brother, and I’m proud of him.”

With its unique design and myriad innovations, the Phosphorescence will undoubtedly attract attention, even when running at night with low profile deck lights.

Deckhand Logbook and Fishermen’s Work: Where Efficiency Meets Simplicity

D

eckhand has taken logbooks as old as seafaring itself to the next level.

The tradition of written logbooks has become more savvy due to innovations created to make commercial fishing easier for owners and operators. Deckhand is made by fishermen for fishermen. Truly the only customization engine of its kind in the world of logbooks- there are no other products that are currently configurable to the extent of Deckhand across multiple fisheries by utilizing the same exact platform.

Real-Time Data was founded in South Australia by commercial fisherman Tom Robinson and digital media designer Simon Dick. Robinson left the world of advertising in 2022 to build Goolwa Pipico, which is now the largest clam fishery in Australia. Dick and Robinson had the drive to solve problems for fishers and make their lives easier with state and federal reporting. This is when Deckhand Logbooks was born.

The team knew very early on that they had to come up with something innovative within Deckhand to be able to respond to the dynamic and varied requirements across fisheries worldwide. They built an “engine”, if you will, that they call Catchflow. This engine can be used by developers with knowledge of local or regional fisheries to quickly build tailored user interfaces – what fishermen see in the wheelhouse for all different fisheries. This includes any data endpoint, regardless of where you’re at in the world. All of this can be done without disrupting the core Deckhand development and product improvements.

Essentially, Deckhand looks the same in New Zealand as it does in the Gulf of Alaska, but the bells and whistles are tailored to what a specific fishery needs and wants. It is truly a product built for fishermen with a variety of ways to be used uniquely for all fisheries.

Deckhand can benefit fishermen and not just another tech innovation. It is essentially an all-in-one reporting, and maintenance log, all of which are crucial pieces to all fisheries. From traps, pots, longlines, trawl, gill net, dredge, and more this logbook is the easiest solution for all wheelhouses and wet, outside environments.

Beyond reporting and maintenance, Deckhand can easily incorporate other aspects of fishing

business information collection and recordkeeping, such as crew logs and contracts, accident reporting, Coast Guard log requirements, and more.

If you fish in more than one fishery, Deckhand allows the user to make a seamlessly switch between workflows. Deckhand logbook was approved as an official electronic vessel trip report (eVTR) application by the NOAA Fisheries Greater Atlantic Regional Office in early May of 2021.

This means that federally permitted fishermen can use the software to collect data and submit eVTRs. The data generated within the Deckhand app is stored locally on the device and can be backed up to user’s iCloud account. The data required for reporting to federal and state regulators are encrypted and sent securely through servers to the necessary repository for only fishery managers to access.

Deckhand blends automation, such as GPS location, automatic calculations of specific fields, and always recalling simple things like vessel names, operator names, and permit numbers, along with a user interface that is the only one of its kind — these things all lead to a friendly experience where fishers only need a fraction of the time to enter logbook information compared to the days of paper.

Deckhand works just as well offline as it does online thanks to a ton of emphasis the team has put into ensuring the software manages (all in the background) the handling of spotty or nonexistent connections while at sea.

Kristan Porter, a commercial fisherman and captain of the F/V Whitney & Ashley out of Cutler, Maine, advocates for the digital logbook. “I have been using Deckhand on my fishing vessel for a while now. It makes sending my trip reports a breeze, and it’s nice to know that I can use my data for so many other purposes, as well.”

Lange Solberg, business development manager for Real-Time Data’s North America operations, has expanded the Australian-originated business to commercial fishing markets in the United States and Canada, with firsthand knowledge as a third-generation fisher who runs the F/V Iceberg Point in June and July to catch sockeye salmon in Bristol Bay. He began fishing at the age of 12 with his father, and in 2013 took over the family business and has expanded the fishing operation since then.

Solberg has been able to incorporate his life on the water and passion for fishing into growing Deckhand and further the intersection of sustainable fishing with innovative technology.

National Fisherman had the pleasure of connecting with Solberg about the benefits of this product for fishermen and able to ask some of the questions you may have as a commercial fisherman.

NF: Most commercial fishermen that are still out on the water are over the age of 45, so there is a concern with the graying of the fleet in all coastal regions of the country. How would you say Deckhand has worked for different generations of fishermen?

Naust Marine’s Electric Winches Innovate Trawler

Tassano notes that the ATW is the centerpiece of the Naust system. “Naust Marine started working on it around 1970 when it was a different company. Back then, it was very simple, the company only made the ATW, and it only controlled one winch,” she says. “Now it can control four winches and adjust to the vessel’s speed for easier control.”

Tassano adds that the ATW can calculate the sea status and maintain the optimal opening of a net when it is being towed straight ahead, during turning, and fishing in cross-current. “And we’re continuing to improve it,” she says. “A lot of boats may not have our winches, but they’ll still use our ATW. We’ve sold those more recently, and we are in talks to provide systems to other U.S. vessels, but I can’t say any more about that.”

“With our systems, you don’t have to shop around and source from different vendors,” Tassano says. “We provide the entire deck package.

Our controls and cabinets are manufactured at our location in Iceland, and all our winches are manufactured at our location in Spain.”

When the owners of the original company established Naust Marine in 1993, they began supplying winches, and since 2016 have manufactured their own winches, with production now in Vigo, Spain.

For the Ocean Rover, Naust supplied and installed two trawl winches driven by 380kW DC motors; three third-wire (net sounder/cable) winches have 37kw AC motors along with newly

aust Marine finished the installation of its electric winches on the Ocean Rover, the last of the American Seafoods trawlers to have its deck gear refitted. “I believe that was our most recent project in the U.S.,” says Brittany Tassano, regional manager of Naust Marine in Poulsbo, Wash.

“We replaced all the hydraulics with electric,” says Tassano. “The trawl winches, the auxiliary winches, the third wire, and we installed the cabinets.” The cabinet, Tassano explains, is the control center for the Naust automatic trawl winch system.

“In the wheelhouse or on deck, they decide how they want the trawl to perform, and with the Automatic Trawl Winch – we call it the ATW – they can configure how far they want the let trawl wires out, how they want to control it when

designed pneumatic band brakes on the drum, replacing the magnetic brakes; two net drum winches with 230KW AC motors. Naust also supplied Gilson and Capstan winches.

“Besides the Naust Automatic Trawl Winch (ATW) system, the winch control and system solutions delivered to Ocean Rover include the electrical spooling gear (ESG), the AutoGen power management system, and controls,” says Tassano. The AutoGen system draws power from the winches by turning the electric motors into generators when the wire is spooling out.

Between the ATW system, oil heaters for the trawl winches, and other options, the Naust package can enable vessels to continue fishing effectively and efficiently in extreme conditions.

Tassano points out that Naust continues to pioneer new technologies. “We are providing Permanent Magnet (PM) motors for the first time for one of our projects that is about to be contracted,” she says. “That’s all I can say for now. We will also soon share details of newly designed HMI [human machine interface] and ATW systems.”

Of particular interest, as more fishermen utilize cameras and artificial intelligence, are Naust’s new winches designed for the fiber-optic cable being developed by another Icelandic company, Hampidjan.

“The fiber optic cable can deliver so much more data,” says Bjarni Gunnlaugsson, general manager of Naust. “Comparing what we have now for data flow to what we will have with fiber optic cable is like comparing your shower to the biggest waterfall that we have in Iceland. The problem is that it can break; it’s much thicker, so we need a winch that can handle it.”

Hjörtur Erlendsson, CEO of Hampidjan, commented about the technology when accepting an award for best innovation at the Icelandic fisheries exhibition.

“There is a lot of time involved in this development because it is not a simple matter to design a fiber optic cable that can withstand extremely challenging conditions at sea where the cable is under high and variable loads,” Erlendsson said. “The fiber optic cable has been successfully tested, but conventional headline cable winches have been found not to be suitable for the fiber optic cable. We have therefore designed a new type of cable winding and are in collaboration with Naust Marine, who intends to fully design with us and build the first winch for testing in the coming winter.”

According to Gunnlaugsson, Naust had a 10-vessel contract in Russia, including the Kapitan Sokolov that has stalled due to sanctions and lack of payment. “Between covid and the war, things have been difficult, but we are working on other projects,” says Gunnlaugsson. “We have an Icelandic vessel being built in Spain, a vessel for the PP Group in Holland – that one is being built in Turkey, and others. We’re mostly doing service work in the U.S., but like Russia, the U.S. fleet needs to be rebuilt.”
