AFDF Presents: Connecting Alaska Seaweed with New Markets 1:00 PM - 1:40 PM ➜ Main Stage The potential for growing seaweed in Alaska is immense. If all of the new applications for seaweed farms are approved, the acres under production will have increased from zero in 2015 to approximately 2,500 in 2021. This is a predictor of significant growth. To achieve Alaska’s potential for a new seaweed industry, more buyers of seaweed are needed. However, new buyers must identify prices, demand, and markets that are a match for the species, product forms and cost structures that Alaska can produce. In order to address this bottleneck for industry growth, the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation, with grant support from the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, partnered with McKinley Research Group and other key industry stakeholders to assess current and potential new markets for Alaska seaweed. Join us to hear about the Alaska seaweed industry, including its growth, market potential, and how we are helping industry foster its development. Going permanent on Pebble Mine By Jessica Hathaway

PETE SOUZA/UNITED TRIBES OF BRISTOL BAY

n November 2020, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rejected Northern Dynasty Minerals’ permit application to build Pebble Mine at the headwaters of Alaska’s Bristol Bay under its subsidiary Pebble Limited Partnership. Following a battle with local residents, Native tribes and fishing stakeholders that spanned three decades, the news sent celebratory ripples across the industry. The mining company submitted its appeal of the decision in January and now the Corps has assigned a new review officer to the appeal, after the prior RO was promoted out of the position, according to an August release from Northern Dynasty President and CEO Ronald Thiessen. The release notes that “guidelines indicate the administrative appeal process should conclude within 90 days.” However, “the Pebble Partnership has been advised that the administrative appeal process for Pebble is likely to take a year or more given the complexity of the case and the scope of the administrative record.” “We have been, and continue to be, very concerned about the USACE’s schedule and timeline for advancing our administrative appeal of the Pebble permitting decision, as we believe this does not accord with regulation,” said Thiessen. Meanwhile, opponents of Pebble Mine are exploring all avenues to protect the region’s abundance of sustainable salmon, reveling in another record this year when 66 million sockeye salmon returned to Bristol Bay’s river complex to spawn. The last record was set in 2018 at nearly 63 million. Recordkeeping began in 1893. “Bristol Bay is a shining example that healthy ecosystems can and still do still exist,” noted Andy Wink, executive director of the Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association. “It’s really an ecological treasure. We ask that state and federal government protect Bristol Bay salmon and the natural habitats that allow it to thrive.” Pedro Bay Corp., a Native organization in

Alaska’s Bristol Bay region, announced in late May that nearly 90 percent of its shareholders voted in favor of conservation easements for more than 44,000 of the corporation’s 92,100 acres of land in southwest Alaska. The agreement would make the land off-limits to development, including Pebble Corp.’s proposed mining road. Supporters are also urging Congress and the Biden administration to take final action to protect the region through two options:

Clean Water Act Protections The Environmental Protection Agency should use its authority under section 404(c) of the Clean Water Act to veto the Pebble Mine. No other approach can create the immediate safety net for those who depend on Bristol Bay. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Environmental Protection Agency have all concluded that Pebble Mine will permanently damage Bristol Bay and its fishery. It’s time to act on that science and give Bristol Bay immediate protection.

not reversed by future administrations, Congress should introduce and pass the Bristol Bay National Fisheries Area Act that will provide federal protection for the watersheds — and fisheries — of Bristol Bay, Alaska in perpetuity. This legislation should permanently ban any toxic mine waste from the proposed Pebble Mine and large-scale projects like it that would harm Bristol Bay’s rivers, lakes and wetlands. “For two decades, the people of Bristol Bay have fought to protect our home from the threat of mines like Pebble because we recognize that our clean waters and lands are more precious than gold,” said United Tribes of Bristol Bay Board President Robert Heyano, a National Fisherman Highliner. “Pebble ignored the people of Bristol Bay at every step of the way, and continues to try to use politics and lies to advance this project and manipulate investors. Enough is enough. We need permanent protections that will provide us with certainty that projects like Pebble will never be allowed to devastate every facet of life in Bristol Bay.”

accurately predict the conditions observed in the area of the sinking. One possible solution, said NTSB Meteorology Group Chairman Paul Suffern, is an experimental NOAA website that more accurately predicts freezing spray accumulations. “None of the captains of the fishing vessels in the area interviewed at the Marine Board of Investigation public hearing were aware of the National Weather Service Ocean Prediction Center Freezing Spray website,” Suffern noted. “And [they] agreed that the graphical freezing spray information would be a useful resource when operating in areas where freezing spray was present.” The combination of a flawed stability report, inadequate international standards for estimating ice accumulation on pot gear, and the unpredicted heavy spray conditions in the area of Sutwik Island culminated in a catastrophic scenario for the Scandies Rose, the board determined. “The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of the capsizing and sinking of the commercial fishing vessel Scandies Rose was the inaccurate stability instructions of the vessel,” said Brian Curtis, director of the NTSB Office of Marine Safety. “It resulted in a low margin of stability to resist capsizing, combined with heavy asymmetric ice accumulation on the vessel due to localized wind and sea conditions that were more extreme than forecasted during the accident voyage.” Recommendations — which are not binding — include: • That the U.S. Coast Guard conduct a study to evaluate the effects of icing, including asymmetrical accumulation on crab pots and crab pot stacks; disseminate findings of the study to

the industry; and establish regulatory calculations for fishing vessels to account for the effects of icing, including asymmetrical accumulation on a crab pot or pot stacks. • That the Coast Guard revise Title 46 Code of Federal Regulations 28.530 to require that stability instructions include the icing amounts used to calculate stability criteria. • That the Coast Guard develop an oversight program for stability instructions of commercial fishing vessels that are not required to develop a load line certificate, for accuracy and compliance with regulations. • That the North Pacific Fishing Vessel Owners Association notify its fleet of the dangers of icing and flawed stability requirements. • That NOAA make an experimental website that reports more detailed icing conditions and predictions fully operational and accessible for commercial use, and that the agency increase observational resources necessary for improved forecasts in the area. • That the Coast Guard require the use of personal locator beacons for all personnel employed on vessels in the coastal, Great Lakes and ocean service to enhance their chances of survival. • That the Coast Guard require all owners, masters, and chief engineers of commercial fishing industry vessels to receive training and demonstrate competency in vessel stability, watertight integrity, subdivision, and use of vessel stability information regardless of plans for implementing the other training provisions of the 2010 Coast Guard Authorization Act. The last two recommendations to the Coast Guard were noted as having already been recommended and denied. All findings and recommendations were unanimously approved by the board. he National Transportation Safety Board held a public meeting Tuesday, June 29, to determine the likely causes of the F/V Scandies Rose sinking on Dec. 31, 2019. In the meeting, board members repeatedly called out the vessel’s flawed stability instructions as well as systemic failures in weather prediction and icing calculations for the gear on deck. The 130-foot commercial fishing boat and its seven crew members had left Kodiak, Alaska, on Dec. 30, 2019, to drop pots for the federal potcod fishery, followed by the opilio crab season. Five of the seven crew members were presumed lost but not recovered. Two survivors testified during the two-week U.S. Coast Guard hearings in February and March 2021, in which the NTSB participated in order to make its determinations for this report. The stability instructions for the Scandies Rose were determined to have failed to include downflooding points on the vessel, and that they provided inaccurate descriptions of parts of the deck space. One of the standout observations in the overview and questions during the board meeting was that icing conditions worsened in the area of Sutwik Island, where Captain Gary Cobban Jr. was headed in an attempt to seek refuge from observed sea conditions and accumulating ice in open waters. Although the weather conditions at the nearby weather stations were accurate, they did not

Fishermen give feedback on gear innovations

people in the blackcod business. “I think without these slinky pots, you would have had people going out of business or selling out,” McManus said. Part of the slinky pot’s success stems from its affordability. The pots run around $75 to $150, but fishermen can use the same ground line they use for hooks and do not need expensive new haulers or hydraulics. Slinky pots are a hit innovation. Not so much the experiments with ropeless or so-called pop-up gear, in hopes of eliminating whale gear entanglements in California’s Dungeness crab fishery In April, a bill in the California state Assembly to mandate pop-up gear in trap fisheries by 2025 failed to make it to the hearing stage. That was a victory for the fishing industry, which convinced lawmakers to withhold support for the measure written by Assemblyman Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) at the behest of the Center for Biological Diversity. Fishermen will need more practical and reliable designs before they can depend on remotecontrolled pop-up buoys to carry vertical lines to the surface for retrieval, said Dick Ogg, a California captain deeply involved with whale monitoring, testing pop-up designs and the California Dungeness Crab Fishing Gear Working Group. “Our ability to travel between the pots to retrieve and redeploy is critical,” said Ogg, a 2019 National Fisherman Highliner. Just adding one minute to the cycle per crab pot in aggregate adds 5.8 hours to the workday on his boat, he calculates. “When we’re taking that much more time, you’re telling the crew they work for the same amount of money, but it will take six more hours,” said Ogg. “Guess how that will turn out.” At this point, Ogg says, “there is nothing on the market we can put on the boat and make it work.” The future gear needs to be stackable and easily deployed and retrieved, and he thinks designers

hen Shawn McManus, skipper of the F/V Vansee, left Seattle in the spring of 2020 to longline for blackcod in Alaska, the outlook was not good. The burgeoning pandemic had injected uncertainty into a fishery that was already struggling with flagging prices and crippling whale depredation. On the grounds, McManus and his colleagues estimated half their catch, sometimes more, was being snatched off hooks by orcas and sperm whales. Fishermen with bigger boats and more powerful hydraulics had long ago switched to whale-proof rigid pots, but they were not an option for smaller operations like the Vansee, a 107-year-old halibut schooner with limited deck space. In a last ditch attempt to save his season, McManus threw in 50 so-called slinky pots before he left Seattle’s Fishermen’s Terminal. To him, it was a new and virtually unknown product, a lightweight collapsible pot that would fold flat and stack on deck, giving boats like his a chance to get off hooks and into pots. “After just trying a couple days, the writing was on the wall. We knew the only way we were going to catch all of our fish was to purchase more of these pots. We fully converted over. They’ve been a lifesaver for us, and really the entire fishery,” McManus said. The pots had made their Alaska debut just a few months earlier in the fall of 2019 when skipper Pete Sawle saw a short video posted online by California fisherman and biologist Alexander Stubbs, who invented the slinky pot with his business partner Adam Sewall. Sawle had 60 of the pots, dubbed CodCoil by Stubbs, shipped to Kodiak, Alaska, found they worked very well, and partnered with Stubbs and Sewall’s business Longline Pots to sell them last winter. Sawle — who runs Fish Tech out of Oregon — estimates the group has outfitted around 50 boats with the slinky pots while inspiring other fishermen to send their own manufacturing to China to make knock-offs. It all amounts to a gear shift fishermen say is unprecedented. “In my 40 years of fishing in Alaska, I’ve never seen a transformation like in the last year since these slinkies came online,” said veteran fisherman Buck Laukitis. And according to McManus, the collapsible pots’ opportune arrival and rapid spread is keeping

need more hands-on experience at sea to conceive engineering solutions. “Until you’re on the boat and see how it works, you can’t design a system,” he said. Ogg foresees no choice but to keep trying. “We had one confirmed Dungeness crab (gear) entanglement last year,” the only verified out of 16 reported entanglement incidents along the coast. But “we’re still accountable for all of them,” he said. It looks like new gear requirements will be coming, “even though we’re reduced (whale interactions) to almost nothing,” said Ogg.

What’s the score? Symphony of Seafood returns By Jessica Hathaway

T

he Alaska Symphony of Seafood has celebrated creative products made from Alaska seafood since 1994, when it was launched by the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation. Following a oneyear pandemic-induced hiatus, the competition is back and ready for kick-off at Pacific Marine Expo in Seattle! “The renowned Alaska Symphony of Seafood is a great way to learn about the extraordinary efforts the industry has made to develop value-added products, to reduce fish waste, and to increase the value of Alaska’s seafood,” said Julie Decker, the foundation’s longtime executive director. The event is designed to encourage and promote the development of value-added products made from fisheries resources taken from the pristine waters of Alaska. The categories this year are Salmon, Whitefish, Retail, Food Service and Beyond the Plate. Additionally, products will be eligible to win special awards in the following categories: Seattle People’s Choice, Juneau People’s Choice, Bristol Bay Choice, and the coveted Grand Prize. First-place winners from each category are sent to Seafood Expo North America in Boston in March 2022 and entered into the expo’s

conferences in-depth 15 improved quality and handling practices in recent years, thanks in part to funding and support from the BBRSDA. “Increased quality at the point of harvest improves quality throughout the supply chain,” says Decker. “This allows higher-quality valueadded products, which is truly something to promote and celebrate.” AFDF sponsors from the last competition include the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association, Lineage Logistics, Trident Seafoods, Marine Stewardship Council, Northwest Fisheries Association, Alaska Air Cargo, At-Sea Processors Association and the United Fishermen of Alaska.

Seafood Excellence Awards, a competition for new products. “From start to finish, the Alaska Symphony of Seafood offers a means to publicize new products, promote a healthy food, and helps expand the worldwide markets for products made from Alaska seafood,” said Decker. Previous winners and entrants have leveraged the Symphony platform and continue to see increased sales and market exposure of their products. Bullwhip Hot Sauce, by Barnacle Foods, was a triple winner in 2019-20 — Retail, Juneau People’s Choice and Grand Prize. “The Alaska Symphony of Seafood encourages all seafood processors to prioritize innovation in product development,” said Barnacle Foods upon winning the Grand Prize in 2019-20. The Alaska Symphony of Seafood is 100 percent funded by industry and its supporters each year. The Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association has committed to a three-year partnership with AFDF to help expand the reach of the Symphony. This

IN THE BAG

Packing for a trip or a season occupies the minds of fishermen in every port By Paul Molyneaux

“Sometimes if I’m wet and cold, I’ll change clothes halfway through the day.” Strongin has not had good luck with oil gear. “I found some Helly Hansens last summer. They were light and stretchy, but too thin. I had to keep patching them with Aqua Seal. Then I found some Grundéns for women, the Sedna bibs. With men’s, the crotch is always too low. So if I need to bend over, I always have to hike them up.” Strongin wears the Grundéns Weather Watch jacket in summer. “But that doesn’t keep you dry,” she said. “With the waves crashing over, or rain, and rope coming through the block spraying everywhere, I always get wet. When it’s colder, I wear the rubber one. But then I sweat — the jacket thing is a real problem.” Strongin wears XtraTuf boots. For gloves she opts for Atlas. “In winter, I use cotton liners and get a size bigger glove. And I use those neoprene wristers, the ones that go up to just below your elbow. Those are great.” Strongin has big hair, long black curls. “I have to have a hat,” she said. “About 50 percent of the time I just want to cut all my hair off, but I just keep tying it back. And I wear a baseball cap in the summer and one of those Carhartt watch caps in the winter.” To stay comfortable under her oil gear, Strongin wears mostly what she calls workout clothes.

Some things lobsterman Chouan Strongin has to have when she heads out to haul traps: her pee funnel, neoprene wristers, sun block and Atlas gloves.

Down in Louisiana, Lance Nacio is geared up for another trip into the Gulf of Mexico on his 65foot shrimp boat the Anna Marie. His crew is not around, but Nacio said they all use pretty much the same gear. “I wear Grundéns,” he said of his oil pants. “A lot of people will use cheaper knock-offs or whatever, but I love the Grundéns because of the quality.” Besides his Grundéns, Nacio and his crew wear the ubiquitous white boots of Southern shrimpers. “They’re Royals,” he said. “American made. Around here we call ’em Dulac Reeboks.” Nacio makes two-week trips and freezes his shrimp onboard. In winter, he said, they wear warm clothes under their gear. To stay in touch on the long trips, Nacio and his crew rely on their smart phones. “We have a Wilson cell signal booster, and we’re usually close enough to shore that I guess they have a signal about 80 percent of the time.” One thing about handling shrimp is the sharp barb on the front end. “The horn,” Nacio called it. “You always want to have tweezers and some needles to get them shrimp stickers out of you. Out here for a couple of weeks, you can get a few.” Up to Jonesport, Maine, Chouan Strongin and her captain are fishing hard, hauling 400 lobster traps a day, and the run is on. “One thing I always bring is a change of clothes, a T-shirt, shirt, pants and socks,” said Strongin.

Tyroan Rediske has a list of indispensables for staying comfortable fishing pot cod in the Aleutians, among them: his nail clippers.

Dixon Smith

W

e’re trawling for pollock now,” said Tyroan Rediske at the end of 2020. “Just killing time until they start cod back up.” Rediske was heading back to the Aleutians in January to fish pots on the F/V Icy Mist, one of the famous Fred Wahl Super 8s. It can be brutal in the Bering Sea in January, and Rediske has a suite of gear to help him stay comfortable in a harsh environment. Unpacking his gear bag, he uses a Red Ledge lightweight jacket. “I think it’s the only one they make,” he said. For bibs, he chooses Guy Cotten’s X-trapper — the blue and yellow ones. “For boots, I use XtraTufs. Personally, I wear the non-insulated ones. I just wear lots of socks and Bama socks that go around your normal socks. They wick away the moisture and keep your socks dry.” For gloves, Rediske packs plenty. “I like the heavier blue ones. I don’t use the orange ones with the insulation, they get wet, and they get all gloppy. In the winter, I use wool liners.” Like a lot of fishermen, Rediske wears sweatpants and a sweatshirt under his oil gear, augmented with polypro long johns when the weather demands. What’s the quirkiest thing Radiske can’t live without? A pair of nail clippers. “It seems small, but I get really antsy if I’m out here and I can’t cut my nails.”

Matt Dundas often cooks on the boats he works on, so he always brings his own collection of knives everywhere he goes.

Biofouling, Aquatic Invasive Species, and Commercial Fishing Vessels:

BE PART OF THE SOLUTION! MATT DUNDAS

WHY SHOULD YOU MANAGE BIOFOULING?  Besides keeping Matt Dundas (left) dry, the lightweight Red Ledge jacket offers him freedom of movement and good ventilation.

“You know, stretchy, wicking,” she said. “And my hoodie with the sleeves cut off. Because you want the warmth for your body, but you don’t want the sleeves that would get all wet. And I like the hood to wipe spray and bait juice off my face.” For a dayboat fishery like inshore lobstering, crew bring their own food, and Strongin uses an Igloo Playmate cooler to carry all her grub. “This is fast-paced work,” she said. “And I need a lot of food.” Strongin points out that it has to be food you can eat quickly, so she stocks up on things like energy bars, jerky, and bananas. “And soup. We stick it in the hot tank, and we can have hot soup.” One hurdle for women fishing on day boats without facilities is when it comes time to pee. Strongin uses a funnel so she can turn her back on the rest of the crew and pee standing up. A number of companies make items specifically for this purpose, the Tinkle Bell, the Go Girl. “I just use a regular automotive funnel,” said Strongin. “I do not take it off the boat. I would not want that to not be on the boat,” she said. Newport, Ore., shrimper and crabber, Matt Dundas works aboard the F/V Dauntless (“Resurrecting Dauntless,” NF April 2020). Dundas notes that last year they saw a lot of weather coming out of the southwest — rain and fog — but his Red Ledge jacket kept him dry. “Red Ledge coats are the bomb,” he said. “Lightweight, good ventilation.” Dundas’ kit is pretty much the norm, XtraTufs and Grundéns. He wears Under Armour long johns and short pants, plus a hooded shirt to stay comfortable without sweating. But unique in his bag is a bundle of cookbooks and high-end chef’s knives. “I have a copy of ‘The Whole Fish,’ that breaks down the whole fish and all the ways you can cook it, and ‘Snout to Tail,’” he said. “They’re pretty good. And I always bring my knives. I have a 9-inch Yoshihiro Sujihiki, and a bunch of others, fillet knives and a Gustav thin fillet knife, because you never know what kind of cutlery a boat’s going to have onboard.” Dundas likes to cook, and his captains usually give him a free hand in the galley. “I’ve seen some badass set-ups, with walk-in refrigerators, flat-top griddles. But another thing I always bring is my Dutch oven. I have a Le Creuset, cast iron, enamel coated. It’s a really nice one.” Whatever the fishery or time of year, fishermen around the coasts are experts at finding the right gear to keep themselves comfortable and improve their performance, and all have certain things that make it just a little easier. Paul Molyneaux is the Boats & Gear editor for National Fisherman and author of “The Doryman’s Reflection.”

Managing biofouling saves you money by protecting your equipment and reducing fuel consumption. Managing biofouling further prevents the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) that could harm commercially important fisheries and local economies that depend on healthy fisheries.

WHAT IS BIOFOULING? Biofouling refers to organisms attached to or associated with underwater or wetted surfaces of a vessel. Your fishing equipment, the hull of your boat, and other boat structures such as propellers, rudders, and intakes can accumulate biofouling.

ost commercial fishermen specialize in mechanical skills and are the first to admit they’re not computer scientists. Many, in fact, are on the water to avoid the trappings of technology. They can fix an engine but are left in the lurch with a computer glitch. While most manufacturers are turning out complex, electronically controlled engines to meet the escalating demands of EPA emissions regulations, Mitsubishi is putting the control back in the capable hands of fishermen. The Japanese engine manufacturer is turning out EPA-compliant engines in Tier 1 through Tier 4 with simple, mechanical controls. The engines, available from 429 to 1,686 horsepower, grabbed the attention of industry pillars like Fred Wahl of Fred Wahl Marine Construction in Reedsport, Ore., and veteran Alaska fisherman, Buck Laukitis. “When those computers go down, you’re shut down,” said Laukitis. “You can’t fish, and you’re just waiting. Reliability is a big deal.” Laukitis just completed his third season on the Wahl-built F/V Halcyon, a 58-foot vessel that’s powered by Mitsubishi’s S6R engine, a 630-horsepower engine that runs at 1,600 rpm. He said the S6R has lived up to its billing as a simple, reliable engine, and he found the fuel efficiency to

third boat he’s had with Mitsubishi engines. His experience led him to choose Mitsubishi again when it came time to replace the engines on some of his lobster boats. “The mechanical engine… and they’re reasonably priced,” Vinjerud said. Paul Strasser runs a pair of S6Rs on the F/V Independence, a 112-foot boat he relies on to safely shuttle 30 or more fishing guests down the Baja California Peninsula from San Diego. Strasser said the 630-horsepower Mitsubishi outperforms the 700-hp 1,800-rpm engines that he replaced — and here we find another Mitsubishi advantage. As electronic engines have proliferated, competitors have increased horsepower with smaller-displacement engines. In the 600-hp class, for example, most competitor engines offer the 600-hp with only 18- to 19-liter displacement engines. This means they are demanding about 33 horsepower per liter out of their engines to produce 600 horsepower (600 hp/18 = 33 hp/L). In contrast, the Mitsubishi S6R pulls its 630 horses out of 24.5 liters, which means they are only taking 25.7 horsepower per liter (630hp/24.5 = 25.7 hp/L). Other engines in this class are working harder — 27 percent harder — and that extra load takes a toll. Bigger displacements equate to longer running and more reliable engines. Another point:

Most continuous-duty fishing boats run at 1,800 rpm, while some Mitsubishi engines are available as low as 1,400 rpm. This means slower piston speeds, less wear and tear on the pistons, and more hours out of the engine. Mitsubishi now has Cascade Engine Center distributing for the West Coast, Alaska, and Hawaii. Cascade’s network of dealers, which includes at least one in each state, provide sales and service support in that region. “There’s a lot of interest in a fully mechanical solution, as opposed to what’s out there now,” said Dave Conrad, manager of Cascade’s marine division. “Fishermen are looking to have a simplified solution.” Mitsubishi also has Laborde Products, covering the Gulf of Mexico and the East Coast, along with inland waterways. Outside the United States, on Canada’s Pacific side is Frontier Power, with Sansom Equipment covering Canada’s Atlantic dealings. Mitsubishi’s distributor and dealer coverage across the U.S. and Canada allows for parts and service support that is strategically positioned to meet the needs of all customers. Beyond the spare parts available from dealers

WE GOT YOU COVERED In rough seas, a vessel’s integrity depends on sound hatches, doors and windows By Paul Molyneaux

measured for the new doors. We have two types of frames, flat and L. With the flat, the measurements have to be exact, but with the L, it has a little play.” Imtra sells three kinds of Libra doors — aluminum, steel and GRP, which is a type of fiberglass. “We also sell UV shades,” says MacDonald, noting that he supplied some for the Progress, which also had its wheelhouse windows smashed, and the wheelhouse flooded, while fishing in the Bering Sea. Windows are important, too. And Bomar, the well-known maker of hatches, has brought out a new line of windows that includes steel frames. “We’ve been making hatches forever,” says Bomar Sales Manager Bob Touton. “But coming out of the recreational boatbuilding recession of 2008, it became apparent that we had to diversify across different product lines.” “We still make our cast aluminum hatches, which

nyone who has ever seen their deck under waves of green water and lived to tell knows the value of reliable hatches. A casual perusal of Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board accident reports reveals numerous cases of downflooding from hatches that fail or have been poorly secured. Faulty hatches in watertight bulkheads, or over shaft alleys, can also lead to water loss and freesurface effect in live tanks or RSW holds, or flooded engine rooms. Aware that seaworthy hatches, doors and windows are vital for any boat, manufacturers are doing their best to get fishermen what they need. At the Snow & Co. yard in Seattle, the Wizard, of “Deadliest Catch” fame, got new doors from a Norwegian manufacturer, Libra. “She took a wave that went through the wheelhouse,” says Eric MacDonald, Pacific Northwest sales manager for Imtra, a New Bedford, Mass.-based company that sells the Libra doors. “That wiped out everything. So when they were redoing the wheelhouse, they decided to replace the doors, too.” According to MacDonald, the Wizard owners chose aluminum doors in steel frames with the largest possible ports. “I went down to the Snow yard here in Seattle and

we’ve been making for decades. And over the last several years, we’ve made deck access plates, where if you don’t need a Lloyds certificate, it can get the job done and save you some money.” Different agencies certify the integrity of hatches and doors on commercial vessels. In the United States, hatches, doors and windows exposed to the elements generally need to be watertight or weathertight. According to Coast Guard rules, watertight means “designed and constructed to withstand a static head of water without any leakage.” Weathertight means that “water will not penetrate into the unit in any sea condition.” “A hinged window or a sliding window is at best going to be weathertight,” says Touton. “With a fixed window, there are different ratings, depending on the size and the thickness of the glass you’re going to float into it, and then the frame has its own integrity.” Bomar’s windows come with steel frames for welding into steel vessels or aluminum frames for aluminum and fiberglass vessels. The glass can be tempered, laminate, and even fire rated. Baier Marine is putting hatches on many commercial vessels, including the Alaska king crab vessel Keta, which underwent a major conversion at Fred Wahl’s yard in Reedsport, Ore. “Our aluminum hatch sales are continuing strong,” says Alexander R. “Sandy” Smith, director of Business Development at Baier Marine. We saw a little dip because of covid, but not much.” When it gets breezy offshore and rigging starts to sing, a vessel’s integrity — and the lives of her crew — depends on sound hatches, doors and windows, and the companies that make them. Exhibitor Product News 39 Meet the Port of Newport and the Port of Toledo

Booth #501

Close in proximity and complementary in services, the ports of Newport and Toledo combine to deliver a full array of services on the central Oregon coast. The Port of Newport is home to one of Oregon’s largest commercial fishing fleets and is well positioned for cargo interests looking for close ocean proximity. The Port’s International Terminal is a multi-use shipping facility featuring a 17-acre site with 3-acre staging and 9 acres of vacant industrial land with all utilities available for development. Located just 1.5 miles from the ocean entrance buoy, the International Terminal has 870 linear feet of berthing for deep draft vessels. The Port of Toledo Shipyard is located 12 miles upriver from Newport. Towering 90 feet high and featuring 20,000 square feet of usable space, the shipyard’s new covered work building is a boon to anyone with a boat in need of maintenance, construction, or a “shave & a haircut” regardless of weather. The shipyard offers skilled crews and well-equipped facilities, including a 660-ton mobile lift. Customers with commercial and recreational vessels, as well as pleasure boats, find an impressive range of marine repair and maintenance services here. Find more information at portofnewport.com and portoftoledo.org.

The offshore wind industry wants to hear from you As offshore wind is set to take off as the next American clean energy resource, it is crucial to continue to understand potential impacts, plan carefully, and engage with other ocean users throughout the planning and project development process. And there are many opportunities for ocean users to weigh in during this process. After hearing from fishermen, offshore wind developers removed over 30 percent of the potential energy production in 2019 in the Massachusetts/Rhode Island Wind Energy Area to create 200 transit lanes for fishermen. The offshore wind industry will continue seeking ways to work with the fishing industry and other ocean users while seizing the generational opportunity to revitalize our economy and combat climate change. We hope our neighbors in the fishing and maritime communities will partner with us as we work to create a better future. Learn more at cleanpower.org/osw_participation

REDE Rescue Systems aids water/ice rescue

Booth #506

What if you needed to help a friend or co-worker who fell into a river, ocean, or through an ice-covered lake? People who work or play on the water may often respond to emergencies for which they have no effective equipment or training. They are the first responders. Falls overboard are the second leading cause of death for commercial fishermen, according to recent studies by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Even firefighters who may have some rescue training are four times more likely to die during a water rescue attempt than while fighting a fire. REDE Rescue Systems’ intuitively operated rescue launching equipment assists first responders to prevent drownings while staying safely out of the water or off the ice. Two launcher platforms and multiple payload options place lifesaving capabilities into the hands of those with minimal training or experience. Ease of operation and self-rescue capabilities are distinctive features of REDE Rescue Systems’ mission to put another tool in the toolbox of lifesaving. Learn more about REDE Rescue Systems and our products at booth 506. Look forward to meeting you.

Radio direction finding for MOB recovery

Booth #603

When you call 911 from a cell phone on land, the dispatcher can usually determine your location in just a few seconds between your phone’s internal GPS and the location information available from the cellular network. However, this is not necessarily the case when a mariner transmits a distress call over a VHF marine radio. Instead, search and rescue authorities rely on radio direction-finding systems to locate mariners in distress — even when those individuals are unable to determine or communicate their position. Radio direction finders calculate the direction of a radio transmitter by analyzing the signal as it reaches the antenna. A single direction finder can determine a line of bearing toward the transmitter; multiple direction finders can be used together to triangulate the location of the transmitter. From tracking EPIRBs, ELTs, PLBs, and other marine survivor locating devices to finding a distressed mariner unable to provide a latitude/longitude, radio direction finding technology has saved countless lives and is a vital tool for search and rescue. Why do you need a radio direction finder? A radio direction finder can be a valuable safety tool, even for commercial and recreational vessels that do not typically engage in search and rescue operations. For example, a direction finder can be used to locate a man overboard by homing in on the signal from a crew member’s personal locator beacon, man overboard beacon, or even a handheld radio.
