Making Every Impression ... A Lasting Impression...

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Friends, It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 National LGBTQ Task Force Gala Miami as we celebrate fifty years of fierce activism for the LGBTQ community. In 1969, the modern LGBTQ rights movement was launched at the Stonewall Inn when our community stood up to police harassment and discrimination. Today, there is still work to do to create a world where everyone is free to be their whole selves in every aspect of their lives. Thank you for joining us in this journey. Tonight we are thrilled to present National Leadership Awards to two superstars, Wilson Cruz and Anthony Rapp, for their leadership in the LGBTQ community. Wilson and Anthony currently co-star on the award-winning CBS All Access original series Star Trek: Discovery, where they play the first openly gay couple in the Star Trek universe. The National LGBTQ Task Force applauds these two extraordinary men for fiercely increasing LGBTQ visibility. I remember a time when there was no positive LGBTQ representation on TV. Today, we can see ourselves reflected in the media, and our National Leadership Awardees uplift our visibility in the best ways. Wilson and Anthony use their talent and care for the community in ways that will inspire more LGBTQ actors to live openly and pursue roles that were once only a pipe dream. We are also honored to present the 2019 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award to Miami’s Gisela P. Vega, Ed. D. Gisela is the Director at the University of Miami LGBTQ Student Center and has more than 25 years of higher education experience.

She exemplifies what it means to support others in their growth and leadership through her dedication to uplifting LGBTQ students’ experiences. I would also like to recognize every committee member and volunteer who have worked countless hours over the past year in order to make this event possible. Led by our Gala Chair, Juan Talavera, this diverse and dedicated team, who we refer to as the “dream team,” are shining examples of what it means to give back. yeraC aeR ecroF ksaT QTBGL lanoitaN ,rotceriD evitucexE

Finally, I want to thank every sponsor, every table captain, every ticket purchaser and auction donor, and everyone else who supported this event. In doing so, you’re not just contributing to the Task Force’s efforts to build power, take action, and create change across the country to achieve freedom and justice for LGBTQ people and their families; you’re also ensuring that we can make a large donation to The Miami Foundation’s LGBTQ Community Fund. We’ve given $3.1 million to date, and thanks to you that number keeps growing and growing. I applaud you, the South Florida community, for your amazing support. Be fierce! Be fabulous! Rea Carey Executive Director

FROM OUR GALA CHAIR Dear Gala Guests, Welcome to the 23rd Annual Task Force Gala – Miami, celebrating 50 years of LGBTQ Fierce activism. Tonight spotlights the amazing work of our community as we give back and raise funds for local nonprofits and the National LGBTQ Task Force. We -- Miami and its LGBTQ citizens and allies — have long been a community of fierce culture and fierce advocacy, and together we have spurred advances that have rippled beyond bounds of place and time in our quest for equality. Despite the challenges, we forge ahead. We move forward. We move hearts, change minds, shape policies and practices, and improve and even save lives. We are LGBTQ Miami, and we are FIERCE. This year, we honor local hero Gisela Vega with the Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award and national heroes Wilson Cruz and Anthony Rapp with the National Leadership Award. As you’ll read in the pages of this journal, they are all incredibly deserving of their respective recognitions. Through their work, they have impacted lives beyond measure. We’re so grateful they are here as we honor them this evening. Our goal is to advance equality by raising funds that support the significant efforts of the National LGBTQ Task Force and of several local community organizations. To that end, the Task Force donates a portion of the proceeds from the Gala and the Winter Party Festival to the LGBTQ Community Fund at The Miami Foundation. An advisory committee then awards grants to Miami-Dade non-profits that serve the

LGBTQ community. Over the years, over $3.1 million has been granted to organizations that serve youth, promote arts and culture, foster advocacy, build community, and deliver social services. I am humbled and grateful by the opportunity to work with the most incredible group of people that constitute the Gala committee. This group of more than 30 individuals has been involved in the raising of funds and producing the event. I am personally driven by three personal values: community, leadership, and teamwork. Every single one of my fellow committee members embodies these principles. I have gained immense respect and admiration for the Task Force’s Miami staff and extend my gratitude for all their hard work and commitment to help us accomplish our mission. I also extend my appreciation to all the volunteers whose hard work makes this event a success. Lastly, this Fierce celebration is not possible without the generous support of our sponsors, donors and guests. Thanks to all of you for saying yes, thank you for showing up, and thank you for being Fierce! Sincerely, Juan Bosco Talavera 2019 Gala Committee Chair

Honoring Heroes, Advancing Equalit y.

ABOUT EDDY MCINTYRE Sometimes awards are named after people who stand out in the community. The Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award is named for someone who stood out and stood up. The breadth of Eddy’s interests and contributions across this community are legion. It was clear that Eddy understood the society we lived in was ours to create, even as it shaped us. Eddy understood that if he saw something needed, he could help make it happen. Eddy understood that community is a participatory and not a passive experience. And, of course, Eddy never sought any personal credit or acknowledgment. But Eddy had no trouble giving recognition to others. As a founding board member of the Dade Human Rights Foundation, it was Eddy, along with his co-board member Rosemary Wilder, who envisioned an annual dinner to acknowledge and appreciate the service of some of the community’s leaders. Thus was the annual recognition dinner born, and tonight we celebrate its 23rd anniversary—23 years of honoring many who have made wonderful contributions to our community. And though each one likely made his or her contributions without thought of recognition or thanks, they nonetheless received both.

Adapted by Jerry Chasen from his remarks announcing the naming of the Award.

10

Honoring Heroes, Advancing Equalit y.

Eddy received neither recognition nor the award, no matter how well deserved it was. He probably would have been embarrassed to receive this honor while alive, it seeming to him too unseemly to receive an award he had helped to establish. But the fact remains that Eddy well belonged in that select group of honorees. So as we go forward, we want to be sure that each of the future’s honorees understands that he or she is in Eddy’s company. The National LGBTQ Task Force Gala – Miami, and the LGBTQ Community Fund at The Miami Foundation, which is funded by the net proceeds of this event, therefore named the annual Community Service Award as the Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award. And so by saying “Thank You” to others, we keep alive the spirit, the passion, and the empowerment that Eddy so selflessly shared with us all.

DR. GISELA P. VEGA 2019 EDDY MCINT YRE COMMUNIT Y SERVICE AWARD The National LGBTQ Task Force is very proud to present Dr. Gisela P. Vega with the 2019 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award. Dr. Vega has more than 25 years of higher education experience. She is currently serving the students at the University of Miami, where she is the Director of the LGBTQ Student Center. Before accepting her current post, she has worked at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the Institute for Shipboard Education with Semester at Sea, Northeastern University in Boston, and Florida International University. Dr. V, as many of her students and friends call her, has worked tirelessly to create what she calls our LGBTQIA+ familia. Over the course of her career, she has advised countless LGBTQ youth, helped put gender and sexual orientation issues at the forefront of college campuses, and moved many to action through her tireless advocacy. She has presented workshops at national and international conferences. She’s passionate about diversity education, social justice, leadership, mentoring, and addressing issues of access and choice in higher education. Providing students with personalized attention is at the heart of her years of service in higher education.

Gisela is an engaged civic leader in the community. She is currently on the board of Aqua Foundation for Women, where she’s reshaped their scholarship and mentorship programs. She currently serves on the board of trustees for the National LGBTQ Scholarship Fund at the Point Foundation. Previously she has volunteered with numerous community organizations, including Equality Florida, OUTshine Film Festival, SAVE, Pridelines, Safe Schools South Florida, Lambda Living, and the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Gisela also serves on the executive board of her beloved church, Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ, a historic church in South Florida. Originally from Chicago, Gisela now lives in Miami with her wife Madelin, stepdaughter Emy, and their dog Roxy.

WILSON CRUZ 2019 NATIONAL LE ADERSHIP AWARD The National LGBTQ Task Force is proud to present the 2019 National Leadership Award to actor Wilson Cruz. Wilson is a triple threat: award-winning actor, activist (or “actorvist”, as he prefers) and humanitarian, are just a few terms used to describe him. He currently stars on the award-winning CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery as ‘Dr. Hugh Culber’, who with castmate Anthony Rapp’s character ‘Lieutenant Stamets’ is part of the first openly gay couple in the Star Trek universe. Wilson also appeared recently on the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why and in Hulu’s original animated kids series The Bravest Knight, where he voices the character Prince Andrew, one-half of a gay couple who share an adopted daughter. In 1994, Wilson won the hearts of audiences across the world and forever changed the LBGTQ landscape by playing Rickie Vasquez, the first openly gay teenager on network television, in his award-winning performance on the ABC’s My So Called

14

Honoring Heroes, Advancing Equalit y.

Life. The series was honored with the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding TV Drama and Wilson received the Emery S. Hetrick Award for outstanding contribution to LGBTQ youth for his performance. Wilson also starred as Angel in the award-winning musical Rent in its West Coast premiere before his reprisal of the role on Broadway. In the summer of 2019, Cruz graced the cover of Entertainment Weekly in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall alongside other notable LGBTQ trailblazers. As an “actorvist”, Cruz is a passionate advocate for LGBTQ youth, especially youth of color. He has served as a national spokesperson for GLAAD and currently serves on the board of GLSEN. He devotes considerable time supporting other LBGTQ causes as well.

ANOTHONY RAPP 2019 NATIONAL LE ADERSHIP AWARD The National LGBTQ Task Force is proud to present the 2019 National Leadership Award to actor Anthony Rapp. Anthony is currently filming the third season of the CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery, where he plays the role of fan favorite ‘Lieutenant Stamets’, a Starfleet Science Officer and one-half of the first openly gay couple in the Star Trek universe. (His partner is played by Wilson Cruz.) Anthony was also recently seen as a recurring guest star on CBS’s The Good Fight and on Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why. Anthony has been acting and singing professionally since he was nine years old. With an extensive list of achievements, he’s best known for originating the role of ‘Mark Cohen’ in the Tony award-winning musical Rent, for which he and the rest of the cast won an OBIE Award. He later reprised the role in Chris Columbus’ film version. Rapp also starred in the Broadway production and national tour of If/Then from the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning creators of Next to Normal. He made his Broadway debut in Precious Sons, for which he received an Outer Critics Circle award and a Drama Desk nomination.

Anthony has recently starred in three independent features: Do You Take This Man (opposite Alyson Hannigan), Opening Night (with fellow Broadway favorite Cheyenne Jackson), and the LGBTQ thriller BWOY, which he also produced. A writer as well, Rapp penned Without You: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and the Musical Rent about his struggle to balance the demands of life in the theatre with his responsibility to his family during his mother’s battle with cancer. He adapted the book into a one-man show entitled “Without You” which he has performed on stages around the world.

GRANT RECIPIENTS & ADVISORY COMMITTEE Since its inception, the Task Force Gala – Miami has provided vital funding for organizations serving the South Florida LGBTQ community. When the National LGBTQ Task Force assumed responsibility for the Gala and for Winter Party Festival in 2004, it committed to returning a significant portion of the net proceeds from these events to local service organizations through a grant-making process administered by The Miami Foundation. To date, the Task Force has donated over $3.1 million to the Foundation’s LGBTQ Community Fund! The LGBTQ Community Fund aims to improve the quality of life for LGBTQ residents in Greater Miami by investing in communities with shifting needs, supporting those facing the most challenging circumstances, and investing in the capacity of organizations seeking to make a difference in the lives of people in the LGBTQ community.

The National LGBTQ Task Force advances full freedom, justice and equality for LGBTQ people. We’re building a future where everyone is free to be themselves in every aspect of their lives. Today, despite all the progress we’ve made to end discrimination, millions of LGBTQ people face barriers in every aspect of their lives: in housing, employment, healthcare, retirement, and basic human rights. These barriers must go. That’s why the Task Force is training and mobilizing millions of activists across our nation to deliver a world where you can be you.

W H AT WE LIVE FOR

SEEING THE AGE

OF HIV

COME TO

AN END

Ending the HIV epidemic is what we live for and we’re making progress every day. Through ongoing scientific advances, we are helping millions of people affected by HIV live longer and healthier lives. But it takes more than medicine to put an end to the epidemic. It takes all of us working together to clear up the facts, correct misunderstanding, and turn stigma into celebration. We’re working every day to put HIV and its impact in the past so that someday HIV is no more. THIS IS WHAT WE LIVE FOR
