Making Every Impression ... A Lasting Impression...

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Friends, Rea Carey

I want to begin by saying I am glad you are all safe experiencing Hurricane Irma and its aftermath. The Task Force considers South Florida our home as well, and I am deeply thankful for this strong community that supports each other through the most challenging times. You have been an inspiration to our staff, our board and the rest of the country. I wanted to say a special thank you to our Gala Chair, Josue Santiago. He not only assembled a “dream team” of devoted and talented volunteers to produce tonight’s Gala; in the days during and after the hurricane, as he played a leading in role in restoring power to South Florida, he never lost sight of ensuring this event would go forward and provide crucial funding for the LGBTQ community.

Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force

This Gala has been a place where we come together and both celebrate our strength and bring strength to each other. It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2017 National LGBTQ Task Force Gala - Miami. Tonight we celebrate Freedom, Beauty, Truth, and Love. YOU truly represent these fabulous qualities! Our National Leadership Award this evening is bestowed on the amazing Gloria Estefan! As you know, Gloria is an outspoken activist for racial and economic justice, immigration equality, and marriage equality. The Queen of Latin Pop has been a gay icon since her hit song “Conga” in 1985. She’s embraced our community’s adoration and used her immense platform to spread Freedom, Beauty, Truth, and Love. We are also honored to present the 2017 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award to longtime South Florida activists and philanthropists Alberto Arias and Wood Kinnard. For more than three decades, Alberto

and Wood have volunteered countless hours and have made numerous generous donations to nonprofit organizations improving the lives of LGBTQ people and their families. Their love, compassion, and dedication to creating a better world for LGBTQ people is truly inspiring. Inspiration is desperately needed in this time. As a diverse and loving LGBTQ community, we are facing new attempts to roll back our hard-won rights from the highest elected offices in the country. That’s why your support is vital to the Task Force and everyone we care about right now. We are grateful that you are our partners in this work. Our honorees, our wonderful Gala Chair, our hard-working committee and volunteers, and all of our generous supporters here this evening represent the guiding lights we need to inspire us all as we take on great challenges. We at the Task Force seek to emulate their leadership as we build power, take action, and create change to achieve freedom and justice for LGBTQ people and their families. Freedom, Beauty, Truth, and Love guide our work tonight and every day. My best,

REA CAREY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Honoring Heroes, Advancing Equality.

CELEBRATING DIVERSITY IS AT THE HEART OF IT ALL Carnival is honored to support the National LGBTQ Task Force and its mission to end discrimination and break down barriers against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning community. We’re proud to work together to build a future where everyone is free to be themselves.

FROM OUR GALA CHAIR Dear Gala Guests, Welcome to the 21st Annual Task Force Gala – Miami! Tonight, we celebrate “Freedom, Beauty, Truth and Love.” These bohemian ideals take on an enhanced meaning for our community, especially in light of these times when so much of what we have worked for is at stake. This is a time when we must stand up for ourselves and for those that are most marginalized and take action. It is also important that we take time to recognize what we have achieved by honoring heroes and advancing equality. This year, we get to honor local and national heroes: • The Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award – Alberto Arias and Wood Kinnard • The National Leadership Award – Gloria Estefan As you’ll read in the pages of this journal, they are all incredibly deserving of their respective awards. Through their work, they have impacted lives beyond measure and we’re so grateful they are allowing us to honor them this evening. Our other call to action this evening is to advance equality by raising funds that support the significant efforts of the National LGBTQ Task Force, as well as several local community organizations. To that end, the Task Force donates a portion of the proceeds from the Gala and the Winter Party Festival to the GLBT Community Projects Fund at The Miami Foundation. An advisory committee then awards grants to Miami-Dade non-profits that serve the LGBT community. Over the years,

more than $2.7 million dollars has been granted to organizations that provide services to youth, promote arts and culture, foster advocacy, build community and deliver social services. Last year alone, the grants funded the important work of more than 30 local organizations! It has been quite a journey to get to this memorable evening, and I’m so grateful to have walked this path with some of the most incredible people. This includes a planning committee of more than 40 people who have been involved in raising funds and producing the event. I’m so proud of the team we have assembled this year, from the many new leaders and voices that have lent their talent to our cause, to the veterans who have continued to make a difference and mentor the new members. We also recruited 100 volunteers to help make this evening successful. Throughout our journey this year, I’ve seen freedom, beauty and truth in all of you, but most of all, I experienced love: Love for the cause, love for each other and love for our South Florida community. Sincerely,

JOSUE SANTIAGO 2017 GALA CHAIR P.S.: Special thanks to Lisa Mercado and Alex Breitman, as well as my fiancé, Matt Dzwonkiewicz. The three of you have been incredible personal pillars of support throughout this year’s planning cycle.

ABOUT EDDY MCINTYRE Sometimes awards are named after people who stand out in the community. The Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award is named for someone who stood out and stood up. The breadth of Eddy’s interests and contributions across this community are legion. It was clear that Eddy understood the society we lived in was ours to create, even as it shaped us. Eddy understood that if he saw something needed, he could help make it happen. Eddy understood that community is a participatory and not a passive experience. And, of course, Eddy never sought any personal credit or acknowledgment. But Eddy had no trouble giving recognition to others. As a founding board member of the Dade Human Rights Foundation, it was Eddy, along with his co-board member Rosemary Wilder, who envisioned an annual dinner to acknowledge and appreciate the service of some of the community’s leaders. Thus was the annual recognition dinner born, and tonight we celebrate its 21st anniversary—21 years of honoring many who have made wonderful contributions to our community. And though each one likely made his or her contributions without thought of recognition or thanks, they nonetheless received both.

10

Honoring Heroes, Advancing Equality.

Eddy received neither recognition nor the award, no matter how well deserved it was. He probably would have been embarrassed to receive this honor while alive, it seeming to him too unseemly to receive an award he had helped to establish. But the fact remains that Eddy well belonged in that select group of honorees. So as we go forward, we want to be sure that each of the future’s honorees understands that he or she is in Eddy’s company. The National LGBTQ Task Force Gala – Miami, and the Gay & Lesbian Community Projects Fund at The Miami Foundation, which is funded by the net proceeds of this event, therefore named the annual Community Service Award as the Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award. And so by saying “Thank You” to others, we keep alive the spirit, the passion, and the empowerment that Eddy so selflessly shared with us all.

Adapted by Jerry Chasen from his remarks announcing the naming of the Award.

ALBERTO ARIAS & WOOD KINNARD

2017 EDDY MCINTYRE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

The National LGBTQ Task Force is proud to present the 2017 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award to longtime South Florida activists and philanthropists Alberto Arias and Wood Kinnard. Married in California in 2008 in the brief window when same-sex couples could wed, they individually and together have given untold time and treasure to benefit LGBTQ organizations and causes in South Florida and beyond for more than three decades.

on HRC’s Board of Governors for three years and provided pro bono services to Legal Aid of Palm Beach in the Ryan White HIV division. These two amazing men are also generous patrons of the arts and supporters of a broad range of social-service and social-justice organizations beyond the LGBTQ community. Fathers to Wood’s two children from a prior marriage and grandfathers to two young children, Alberto and Wood live in West Palm Beach with dozens of beautiful, exotic birds in Alberto’s prize aviary.

In addition to the Task Force, organizations that have benefited from their largesse include SAVE, the OUTshine Film Festival (for which Wood served as board chair in 2013), Health Crisis Network (for which Alberto served as an employee, volunteer, and board member), Pridelines, Gay8 Festival, and Voices of Pride: The Gay Men’s Chorus of the Palm Beaches, among many others. GLORIA ESTEFAN NATIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD

The National LGBTQ Task Force is proud to present the 2017 National Leadership Award to Grammy award-winning singer, actress, songwriter, author, philanthropist and humanitarian Gloria Estefan. Born in Cuba, Gloria and her family were forced to flee the island following Fidel Castro’s 1959 coup. In 1975, living in Miami, she joined a local wedding band headed by keyboardist Emilio Estefan, and Miami Sound Machine was born. The group’s unique fusion of pop, disco, and salsa earned them a devoted local following. In 1985, their hit “Conga” took the world by storm, and since then Estefan has sold over 100 million records worldwide. Gloria’s many accolades include seven Grammy Awards, an Oscar nomination for the song “Music of My Heart,” a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, an American Music Award for Lifetime Achievement, an induction into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame, an Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and a National Artistic Achievement Award from the US Congress. In 2015 President Obama presented Gloria & Emilio Estefan with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Later this year Gloria will be honored by the Kennedy Center.

Most recently Gloria and Emilio directed their talents to creating and producing ON YOUR FEET!, a musical based on their incredible lives. Since opening, the production has received rave critical reviews and nominations for Tony Awards, Outer Critics Circle Awards and Drama League Awards. After a successful two-year run on Broadway, ON YOUR FEET! is now on its national tour. Throughout her career Gloria has championed a host of issues and demonstrated strong compassion for those who have suffered from discrimination, economic disparity, natural disasters and more. Gloria’s vocal support of marriage equality, her partnership with the It Gets Better campaign, and her recent film, A Change of Heart, has helped raise awareness for the LGBTQ community on a tremendous scale. She established the Gloria Estefan Foundation to support charitable programs for disadvantaged children and empower young people through education and opportunity. The Foundation also supports spinal cord research through the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.

ANDRÉA BURNS HOST

The Task Force Gala – Miami is thrilled to welcome actress and singer Andréa Burns as our emcee for the evening. She recently received an Outer Critics Circle Award for her portrayal of Gloria Fajardo in Broadway’s On Your Feet! She is a winner of a Drama Desk Award for her creation of the role of Daniela, the saucy hairdresser in the Tony Award-winning musical In The Heights. Andréa began her career touring the opera houses of Europe as Maria in West Side Story when she was 18 years old. Since then she has gone on to appear on Broadway in shows including Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, The Full Monty and The Ritz. She starred opposite Nathan Lane on Broadway in the Lincoln Center production of The Nance. Andréa was

also selected by Stephen Sondheim to create the role of Celeste in his musical Saturday Night in its New York premiere. Andréa’s debut solo album, A Deeper Shade Of Red, was described by Playbill as “superb on all counts”. A favorite at 54 Below Broadway Supper Club, Andréa performs her one-woman show, which has been hailed by the New York Times as “ uproarious, ebullient and playful”, all of over the world. Her television credits include Marvel Comics’ Jessica Jones, Blue Bloods, Law & Order: SVU, Rescue Me, The Electric Company (2009 TV series), and Wonder Pets. These are just a few of the many highlights of her amazing career thus far.

ABOUT THE TASK FORCE

The National LGBTQ Task Force advances full freedom, justice and equality for LGBTQ people. We’re building a future where everyone is free to be themselves in every aspect of their lives. Today, despite all the progress we’ve made to end discrimination, millions of LGBTQ people face barriers in every aspect of their lives: in housing, employment, healthcare, retirement, and basic human rights. These barriers must go. That’s why the Task Force is training and mobilizing millions of activists across our nation to deliver a world where you can be you.
