Making Every Impression ... A Lasting Impression...

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Friends, It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the National LGBTQ Task Force Gala - Miami, one of the greatest “shows” on Earth. The Task Force is dedicated to creating a world where everyone is free to be their whole selves in every aspect of their lives, and tonight we are happy to present you with a special evening to celebrate being you. And, what you all are is simply amazing! Tonight we are thrilled to present National Leadership Awards to two national media superstars: Robin Roberts and Sam Champion! It’s not happenstance that at this intense political moment for our democracy we are celebrating the press. We care deeply about freedom, truth, and leadership, and we know you do, too. Both Sam and Robin broke ground on the national stage by being out and visible. They have been incredible role models for countless LGBTQ people. We are excited to honor Robin as a media leader because she stands for who we are and what is important in our society: authentic, genuine, courageous, and dedicated to the hard work of journalism. In addition to being one of the country’s most trusted anchors, Sam has the distinction of being the first television network anchor to come out publicly. He is a passionate advocate for the LGBTQ community and has worked to raise awareness of HIV prevention. We are also honored to present the 2018 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award to two longtime leaders and supporters of the South Florida LGBTQ community, Charles Million and Tim Nardi. Charles and Tim are committed to many causes, including serving several years on the Gala committee. Each has served as Gala Co-Chair, and under their leadership,

the event grew tremendously from both a fundraising and a creative perspective. Their efforts have raised significant funds for the Task Force and the local community. They are a generous and incredible couple who completely embody Eddy’s spirit and his namesake award. eraC aeR I would also like to recognize every committee member and volunteer ywho ecroF ksaT QTBGL lanoitaN ,rotceriD evitucexE have worked countless hours over the past year in order to make this event possible. Led by our Gala Chair, Josue Santiago, this diverse and dedicated team, who we refer to as the “dream team,” are shining examples of what it means to give back.

Finally, I want to thank every sponsor, every table captain, every ticket purchaser and auction donor, and everyone else who supported this event. In doing so, you’re not just contributing to the Task Force’s efforts to build power, take action, and create change to achieve freedom and justice for LGBTQ people and their families; you’re also ensuring that we can make a large donation to The Miami Foundation’s LGBTQ Community Fund. We’ve given almost $3 million to date, and thanks to you that number keeps growing and growing.

Rea Carey Executive Director

FROM OUR GALA CHAIR Dear Gala Guests, Welcome to the 22nd Annual Task Force Gala – Miami! Tonight, we celebrate you and the extraordinary individuals that make up our community. We strive to bring you “the greatest show” where we can each roar “this is me” in the proudest and most unapologetic way. This is a time when we must stand up for ourselves and for those that are most marginalized and take action. That is why we also endeavor to share a space where we can uplift one another by celebrating what we’ve accomplished, who we are and what we are capable of. This year, we get to honor local and national heroes: • The Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award - Charles Million & Tim Nardi • The National Leadership Award – Robin Roberts & Sam Champion As you’ll read in the pages of this journal, they are all incredibly deserving of their respective awards. Through their work, they have impacted lives beyond measure and we’re so grateful they are allowing us to honor them this evening. Our other call to action this evening is to advance equality by raising funds that support the significant efforts of the National LGBTQ Task Force, as well as several local community organizations. To that end, the Task Force donates a portion of the proceeds from the Gala and

the Winter Party Festival to the LGBTQ Community Fund at The Miami Foundation. An advisory committee then awards grants to Miami-Dade non-profits that serve the LGBTQ community. Over the years, nearly $3 million dollars has been granted to organizations that provide services to youth, promote arts and culture, foster advocacy, build community and deliver social services. Finally, I’m so grateful to have walked this path with some of the most incredible people. This includes a planning committee of more than 40 individuals who have been involved in raising funds and producing the event. I’m proud of the team we have assembled this year, from the new members who lent their talent to our cause, to the veterans who have continued to make a difference and mentor the new folks. We also recruited 100 volunteers to help make this evening successful. For everyone involved in making tonight what it is, this has been a labor of love for the cause and for this chosen family, and the South Florida community is all the richer for it. Sincerely, Josue Santiago Gala Chair

ABOUT EDDY MCINTYRE Sometimes awards are named after people who stand out in the community. The Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award is named for someone who stood out and stood up. The breadth of Eddy’s interests and contributions across this community are legion. It was clear that Eddy understood the society we lived in was ours to create, even as it shaped us. Eddy understood that if he saw something needed, he could help make it happen. Eddy understood that community is a participatory and not a passive experience. And, of course, Eddy never sought any personal credit or acknowledgment. But Eddy had no trouble giving recognition to others. As a founding board member of the Dade Human Rights Foundation, it was Eddy, along with his co-board member Rosemary Wilder, who envisioned an annual dinner to acknowledge and appreciate the service of some of the community’s leaders. Thus was the annual recognition dinner born, and tonight we celebrate its 22nd anniversary—22 years of honoring many who have made wonderful contributions to our community. And though each one likely made his or her contributions without thought of recognition or thanks, they nonetheless received both.

Eddy received neither recognition nor the award, no matter how well deserved it was. He probably would have been embarrassed to receive this honor while alive, it seeming to him too unseemly to receive an award he had helped to establish. But the fact remains that Eddy well belonged in that select group of honorees. So as we go forward, we want to be sure that each of the future’s honorees understands that he or she is in Eddy’s company. The National LGBTQ Task Force Gala – Miami, and the Gay & Lesbian Community Projects Fund at The Miami Foundation, which is funded by the net proceeds of this event, therefore named the annual Community Service Award as the Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award. And so by saying “Thank You” to others, we keep alive the spirit, the passion, and the empowerment that Eddy so selflessly shared with us all.

Adapted by Jerry Chasen from his remarks announcing the naming of the Award.

CHARLES MILLION & TIM NARDI 2018 EDDY MCINTYRE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD The National LGBTQ Task Force is proud to honor longtime South Florida activists and leaders Charles Million and Tim Nardi with the 2018 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award. Charles and Tim are longtime supporters of the South Florida community and are committed, both separately and together, to many causes. Charles served as Chair of the Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council for the last four years, is Vice Chair of the Miami Shores Community Alliance, and is a board member of Miami New Drama. Tim serves on the boards of the Greater Miami & the Beaches Hotel Association, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau Finance Committee, the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Miami Beach Visitors and Convention Authority, and the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce Hospitality Committee. Charles and Tim were recipients of the Aqua

Foundation for Women’s “Ally Award.” They both spent several years serving on the Gala committee and have each served two-year terms as Gala Co-Chairs. Under their leadership, the Gala grew tremendously from both a fundraising and a creative perspective. Their efforts have raised significant funds for the Task Force and the local South Florida LGBTQ community. Charles and Tim share their Miami Shores home with their two dogs, Miranda and Webster. They are a generous and incredible couple and completely embody the spirit of the Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award.

ROBIN ROBERTS 2018 NATIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD The National LGBTQ Task Force is proud to present a 2018 National Leadership Award to news anchor, producer, author, and LGBTQ activist Robin Roberts. Robin is a Peabody award-winning anchor best known as the co-anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America. Under her leadership, the ABC broadcast has won five Emmy Awards for Outstanding Morning Program and the 2017 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Daytime TV Hosting Team. Robin has been honored with the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism and was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame as well as the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame. In 2007, Robin was diagnosed with breast cancer, and five years later, she was diagnosed with MDS. She underwent a bone marrow transplant: her sister Sally-Ann was a perfect match. Her story triggered an outpouring of support from across the nation. She joined forces with “Be the Match”

to inform the public about the need for more donors. Since her diagnosis, the bone marrow registry has seen a tremendous increase. Robin was voted the “Most Trusted Person on Television” by a Reader’s Digest poll in 2013. In December 2013, she publicly acknowledged her longtime partner, Amber Laign. “By coming out as a lesbian while a national news personality, Robin Roberts has been a role model for countless LGBTQ people,” said Rea Carey, executive director of the National LGBTQ Task Force. “We are excited to honor her as a lesbian woman and media leader. Roberts stands for who we are and what is important in our society: authentic, genuine, courageous and dedicated to the hard work of journalism.”

SAM CHAMPION 2018 NATIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD The National LGBTQ Task Force is proud to present a 2018 National Leadership Award to news editor, anchor and LGBTQ activist Sam Champion. Sam is a five-time Emmy and Peabody award-winning anchor best known for his stint on ABC’s Good Morning America. As an anchor of both GMA and The Weather Channel’s America’s Morning Headquarters, Sam has been a familiar face to people all across the country. He has traveled around the globe to cover weather-related matters and report on key issues. From wildfires, to hurricanes, and blizzards, Sam is always on the frontline. He also advocates for the environment by emphasizing the importance of halting climate change and conserving our great planet. In addition to reporting weather-related issues, Sam has interviewed countless public figures and newsmakers to deliver the most reliable news to his loyal viewers. The courage that Sam has demonstrated in his successful and remarkable career makes him more than worthy of this award. In 2012, Sam became the first co-anchor of a network morning show to come out publically. Over

the years Sam has been a passionate advocate for the LGBTQ community. He has raised awareness of HIV prevention, supported GLAAD, advocated for marriage equality, and was a recipient of the Human Rights Campaign’s Visibility Award. As one of the country’s most trusted anchors, Sam helped families in homes across the country open their eyes and ears. He once stated “I think what people watch in their homes, what they’re comfortable with in their homes, leads the way for acceptance in this country.” Sam has, without a doubt, helped change hearts and minds. Sam married his husband, artist Rubem Robierb, on December 21, 2012, in New York. The couple currently splits their time between New York and Miami, where they first met on New Year’s Eve 2011.

JAI RODRIGUEZ

EMCEE

The Task Force Gala – Miami is thrilled to welcome Emmy Award-winning actor and musician Jai Rodriguez as our emcee for the evening. Jai is best known as the ‘Culture Vulture’ on the Bravo network’s reality television program Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. He began his career at age 18 when he was cast in the role of Angel in the critically acclaimed Broadway musical RENT. He continued his Broadway career, appearing in shows including The Producers and Spinning Into Butter. He also created and performed the title role of Zanna in the Off-Broadway sensation, Zanna, Don’t!. A dynamic vocalist, Jai has had the honor of sharing the stage singing duets with musical legends like Gladys Knight, Patti Labelle, Brian McKnight, and Michelle Williams. Jai was featured in Lady Gaga’s video, “Telephone,” featuring Beyoncé. Jai has made appearances on hit shows such as Nip/Tuck, How I Met Your Mother, Grey’s Anatomy, and Kingdom. Recent standout TV credits include roles on Grace and Frankie, The Magicians, Wisdom of the Crowd and most recently on The Resident on FOX. Jai will rejoin the cast of the Netflix hit series EASTSIDERS for their fourth season, which starts production this fall. Throughout his life he has been an advocate for LGBTQ rights. He has supported organizations like AIDS WALK, R. E. A. F. and Life Group LA. Most recently he teamed up with Positively Fearless to educate the Latinx community about HIV and encourage gay and bisexual men to be fearless in taking charge of their health. You can listen to Jai every day as he hosts Inside OUT, the morning show on OUT/NOW radio, a brand-new station dedicated to the LGBTQ community. These are just a few of the many highlights of his diverse career thus far.

CARLA BORDONADA SINGER Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Carla Bordonada began performing professionally with local corporate bands on the island, while also working in musical theatre productions as a singer/actress and behind the scenes, as a lyricist and vocal coach. She later moved to South Florida where she began performing as a piano bar entertainer, primarily in gay piano bars in Miami and Wilton Manors, alongside her musical partner in crime, Rick Leonard. She had her first cabaret show Canciones de Broadway, directed by David Sexton, at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center in 2013 and during which she met and had the pleasure of singing a duet with the National LGBTQ Task Force’s own Josué Santiago. Carla has also performed in a few South Florida musical theatre shows, including Slow Burn Theatre’s production of the musical Chess. Always supportive of fellow musicians in the LGBTQ community, Miss Bordonada has also performed several times with the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble. She now lives in New York City, where she has her one-woman weekly show at a—you guessed it— gay bay in the Upper East Side! Among her future projects, Carla will be playing one of the three Divas in Slow Burn Theatre’s production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, which is set to open in June, 2019 at Broward Center of Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.

KIMBERLY LOCKE

SINGER

The Task Force Gala – Miami is thrilled to welcome singer Kimberley Locke as entertainment this evening. When Kimberley isn’t helping other artists to make their dreams come true, she’s creating and performing her own music. Auditioning for the 2003 series of TV talent show American Idol was a life-changing decision for Kimberley. She successfully passed the audition and became a firm fan favorite, eventually placing as second runner up and setting her on a new career path in the music industry. Kimberley signed to Curb Records immediately after her American Idol journey, where she became a very successful recording artist and released three full-length albums with the label. Among her many achievements she’s had eight Top 20 Adult Contemporary hits and four #1 Dance hits across various Billboard charts. Her #1 club hit, a remake of the Freda Payne classic “Band of Gold,” was included on Billboard’s “Top 50 Dance Songs of the Decade” list. She’s also made history as being the only recording artist to score a #1 Christmas song on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart three years in a row. In 2009, Kimberley parted ways with Curb Records and became the first artist to sign a deal with Randy Jackson’s record label, Dream Merchant 21 Entertainment. Two years later, she announced she was launching her own artist consulting company, I AM Entertainment, LLC. She released her first independent EP album, Four for the Floor through I AM Entertainment in July 2011, followed by a cover of “Silver Bells” four months later, and “Finally Free” the following year. Most recently she was seen at the 2016 finale of American Idol, which was watched by around 13 million viewers. At the finale she sang her hugely successful 2004 single “8th World Wonder,” along with additional solo and group performances with other American Idol favorites.

AJ REDDY DJ

DJ/Producer AJ Reddy started his DJ career on the sunny beaches of Anjuna in Goa, India with the 145 beat Trance Music as his mainstay. It’s not until he moved to NYC that he got introduced to this strange but uplifting music called House Music at a rhythmic 128 beats. He immediately fell in love with and started mastering various genres of House. He played in many clubs in Queens, Long Island, Manhattan and Fire Island. Before he could play his new-found cutting edge House music in the Temples where he discovered it — namely Roxy, Twilo, Sound Factory, Tunnel etc — all closed down. AJ Reddy made the decision to move to Miami because the House music scene there is still at its prime. The move also made his music distinctly international with extensive influences of Brazilian, Colombian, Cuban, and Caribbean Rhythms and also put him on the Circuit map. Ever since his Miami debut he is one of the most sought after DJs in South Florida playing at least 2 gigs a week in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale Metro area at some Bar, Mega Club or a Pool Party if he is not traveling to other cities. AJ Reddy is not only a staple at many major clubs but also the Official DJ/Headliner of many Pride Events, Festivals and Circuit Parties. His fans swear by his style of melodious yet high energy Circuit House, Vocal House, Deep House, Tribal House, and Top40 Remixes and his always packed dance floors are a testament to that. Now it’s your turn to dance to his addictive beats. You can enjoy his Original Releases, Remixes and Podcasts at soundcloud.com/djajreddy and contact him at djajreddy@gmail.com

SUPPORTING THE LGTBQ COMMUNITY SINCE ALWAYS.

The National LGBTQ Task Force advances full freedom, justice and equality for LGBTQ people. We’re building a future where everyone is free to be themselves in every aspect of their lives. Today, despite all the progress we’ve made to end discrimination, millions of LGBTQ people face barriers in every aspect of their lives: in housing, employment, healthcare, retirement, and basic human rights. These barriers must go. That’s why the Task Force is training and mobilizing millions of activists across our nation to deliver a world where you can be you.
