FEATURE

Perched high on a hill above the coastal charm of Port Campbell, Port Farm first appears as a humble farm shed nestled in the landscape. Slowly the façade gives way to a stunning retreat where the drama of the rugged Southern Ocean meets serene farmland views with endless horizons.
Inviting you to step inside, switch off, and experience the Great Ocean Road from a whole new perspective, Port Farm is designed to withstand the elements yet embrace the soul, a thoughtfully crafted hideaway that combines rustic charm with luxurious comfort.
The interiors exude warmth, with every detail carefully chosen to help you reconnect with nature and with loved ones, and to slow down and savour the simple pleasures. Indulge in the finest local produce, unwind in the outdoor bathtub, or gather with friends around the glowing embers of the firepit to create a getaway that is a gentle escape from the rush of everyday life.
We spoke with Georgie Selman, who together with husband Richard and children Jimmy, Rosie and Angus have created Port Farm as a haven for all to share.
NT: Please tell us about your family, and why you fell in love with the Port Campbell region?
GS: As a family our day-to-day lives are consumed with the demands of our mixed cropping and livestock farm 50 minutes inland from the iconic Twelve Apostles coastline. When our kids were younger, we’d often spend a weekend afternoon down at Port Campbell, eating fish and chips on the foreshore and playing on the beach. The kids would always come home soaking wet rain, hail or shine, and the bay, which is the only protected beach to swim in in the area, soon became our favourite place to spend time together away from the farm. Something Richard had also done with his parents and grandparents when he was a boy.
NT: We would love to know about the journey that led to developing Port Farm?
and sea that stretches out before you. It’s very special and we couldn’t help but feel it would be an incredible opportunity for us to be able to share this unique part of the world with others, giving them a chance to see the Great Ocean Road differently.
NT: Do you have a background in hospitality or design, and what was your vision for the renovation?
GS: My background is in agriculture and strategic communications, but after undertaking Sarah Andrew’s The Hosting Masterclass, my appreciation for design and how it can connect people with place became more acute. Thoughts about what we wanted Port Farm to look and feel like swirled around in my head for years, but when it came down to it, we were guided by our memories of the places we’ve lived and the environment, not just in terms of colour but also the materials we used inside and outside the house because the weather conditions here on top of the hill can be brutal – it is the Shipwreck Coast after all.

GS: It was on one of these trips (2019) that we noticed a For Sale sign on a 170-acre farm two kilometres outside of Port Campbell on Kirrae Whurrung Country. It would make more sense for us to escape to the city, but when you reach the top of hill at Port Farm where the house is and look out over the Southern Ocean, your thoughts slow down. You feel an instant connection to the landscape
NT: The interior design highlights the beautiful surrounds, and brings the outside in, with a colour palette that reflects nature.
GS: Absolutely, the 12 Apostles coastline is iconic and the colour scheme we used was inspired by the Port Campbell National Park and the farmland that unfolds like a patchwork blanket around the house.
NT: What was the experience like of bringing your vision to life?
GS: The design of the house was one thing, but what I really wanted to achieve is for friends and family to walk in the door and instantly feel welcome. That the time they have here is precious; long chats by the fire, windswept hair and meals shared around the dining table.
L>R: Angus, Rosie, Georgie, Bunni (dog), Richard and Jimmy
We’re used to old houses with character, and we knew Amy Spargo of Maine House Interiors would give us a push towards something more interesting than what was practically required for farm accommodation or often associated with off-grid houses. We absolutely trusted her and it’s wonderful staying here – the finishes are tough, but they’re interesting, comfortable and help connect the home to the landscape that stretches out beyond the windows.
NT: The materiality used throughout is so textural, and the colours quite saturated. Were you heavily involved in the selection process?
GS: Yes, although I trusted Amy’s design instinct on some of the things I couldn’t visualise during the concept stage. I am so glad I did, because while we didn’t want the interiors to detract from the view which is constantly changing, we did want it to be a home that was interesting and true to its unique location. With Amy’s help we selected finishes and furniture that spoke to the landscape, and while I was initially unsure about green tiled bathrooms, I now smile every time I wander through the national park and see the very same shades of green lining the clifftops.
NT: Are there particular design elements in Port Farm that are your favourites?
GS: I love how every bedroom equally shares in the view and when you’re tucked away in the house or in the bath out on the deck, you can appreciate the brutality and the full force of nature. Just being here gives you a different perspective on the world.

NT: What do you love most about what you have created?
GS: It’s the feeling you get when you arrive here. Time really does slow down and it’s easy to find yourself lost in the view watching birds or the weather move across the horizon.
NT: What can guests expect from a stay at Port Farm?
GS: There’s something about this coastline that makes you feel deeply insignificant. That’s a great thing, especially as it becomes harder to disconnect ourselves from this fast-paced world we live in. It’s our hope our guests will have the time to embrace this at Port Farm and leave with not only incredible memories, but also feeling better and more connected to the world than before they arrived. We also hope they love the small touches we’ve included to make their extra special…little surprises made locally that we take huge joy in sharing!
