Read the following passage carefully.

COMPREHENSION

Most people know of the parrot that is kept as a pet at home. It is a companion to many and is taught to mimic people and even respond to a greeting. Guyana forests can boast of a large variety of this bird, one being the macaw. The macaw is a fairly large bird which appears much bigger than it really is because of its long tail feathers. These are most outstanding birds because of their colourful, brilliant plumage. The most common is the blue and yellow variety, the yellow is by far the prettiest and those that are entirely blue are quite rare. These birds have strong beaks suited for cracking nuts. The parakeet, although the smallest, is the noisiest and the liveliest. They make their homes in hollow trees. Instead of

perching as most birds do, they cling to the bark of the tree with their beaks and claws when sleeping. The destructive ones, the green parakeets are a nuisance to the farmer as they raid his garden.

The following questions are about the passage which you have just read. Write complete sentences in answer to these questions. Pay attention to your spelling and grammar.

1. What makes the macaw appear to be larger than it really is? ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ 2. The coconut palm stands out as the most precious species of the palm family. It is found widely in tropical regions and

its seeds are carried by the ocean currents around the world. Its original habitat is unknown but it is cultivated in the southern shores of Florida as well as the Caribbean. Since prehistoric times, historians claim that the palm has been present in the Malayan islands and tropical Asia. Natives have become very familiar with this magnificent tree.

In appearance, the long fibrous trunk looks very elegant and several branches adorn the top of the tree. The small flowers hang from the crown of trees in long spikes. The coconuts grow in bunches and each fruit may be thirty centimetres long and slightly narrower in width. Some coconuts are ready for drinking even though they may look small. Other species grow very big before they are mature for drinking.

The outer skin of the coconut is always smooth, but its colour may vary depending

on the type. It is normal to see mature fruits in green, orange and yellow colours. Inside the fruit only one seed is found. Here the white jelly can be found as a food. If it is left to get hard, it forms copra and the oil extracted can be used in the manufacture of candles, margarine and soap.

The coconut palm has a variety of other uses essential to man. The leaves of the

coconut palms serve important functions. They may be used for thatched roofs. The leaves may also serve is in the making of brooms and hats. The dry shells too can be used in the manufacture of jewellery and ornaments, especially important in the tourist trade of the tropical islands. NATION WORKBOOK

New York

a New York bank

Notice that the proper adjective always begins with a capital letter Underline the proper adjective in each sentence. Then circle the noun it modifies. The first one is done for you.

pupils must follow. Did you notice how the words the Principal and the pupils were repeated? Didn’t it sound strange? Let us rewrite it like this.

This morning the Principal spoke to the students. She told them that she was very happy to see them after the long

time away from the school compound. They told her that they had missed her too. She wished them a successful term and reminded them of the guidelines they must follow.

Notice how the words she, her, they and them are used in place of the nouns after their initial use. The words that were used in place of the nouns are called PRONOUNS. A pronoun is a word to replace a noun. It therefore refers to the name of an animal, person place or thing. Notice that pronouns are used instead of a noun when a speaker does not wish to repeat the noun Underline the pronouns in these sentences. 1. They have not been to the cinema since last year. 2. Are the pencils hers? 3. That is the boy who won the first prize. 4.

Who told you to include him in our plans?

Choosing A Suitable Pronoun When choosing the pronoun to complete the sentence, always ask For example:

(She, Her) went for a walk.

Is a subject needed? Is an object needed?

In this sentence, a subject is needed.

(She, Her) went for a walk. Sometimes it is useful to divide the sentence into two parts when trying to decide the correct pronoun to use. For example:

Give the sweets to him and (they, them). Give the sweets to him. Give the sweets to them.

The answer is

Give the sweets to him and (them, them).

Underline the correct pronoun in each sentence. 1. Please give (I, me) the pencil.

2. I have never seen (he, him) before.

3. (We, us) have cleaned the shoes.

4. Open the door for (they, them).

5. Mara gave the fish to (her, she).

6. (He, him) is my best friend.

7. (I, Me) do not eat fried chicken.

8. (Them, They) are preparing for sports.

9. I have told (she, her) never to hit (he, him) again.

10. Ask (her, she) to close the door.

11. After Ann and (they, them) leave, we will eat.

12. The teacher asked (we, us) to clean the classroom.

SENTENCES

Using Sentences When writing, always try to vary the type of sentence used. Look at these three types of sentences: The simple sentence is made up of an independent clause, so it contains a subject and a verb. It does NOT contain either a dependent clause or another simple sentence. Examples of simple sentences – NATION WORKBOOK

13

THURSDAY, MAY 20, 2021.

a) The dog barked. b) The large tan dog with a wide black collar barked loudly at the full moon last night. The simple sentence may have a compound subject: The dog and the cat howled. It may have a compound verb: The dog howled and barked. It may have a compound subject and a compound verb: The dog and the cat howled and yowled, respectively. The compound sentence consists of two or more simple sentences joined by

(i) a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so): For example: The dog barked, and the cat yowled. (2) a semicolon: For example: The dog barked; the cat yowled. (3) A compound sentence consists of two or more simple sentences joined by a comma, but ONLY when the simple sentences are being treated as items in a series: For example: The dog barked, the cat yowled and the rabbit chewed. Join these pairs of sentences to form a compound sentence. 1. Mr Jones built the house. He didn’t paint it. _______________________________________________________________________ 2. You wait here. I’ll get the package for you. _____________________________________________________________________ 3. The girls could not find the hairstyling kit. _______________________________________________________________________ A third type of sentence is The complex sentence. This consists of a combination of an independent clause and a dependent NATION WORKBOOK

14

THURSDAY, MAY 20, 2021.

clause. The independent clause is joined by one or more dependent clauses. A complex sentence always has a subordinating conjunction such as because, before, after, although, or when, or a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which. The dog that was in the street howled loudly. (This is an example with a relative clause as the dependent clause)

A student who is hungry would never pass up a hamburger.

(This example has a subordinating conjunction creating the dependent clause.) Note the various positions the dependent clause may be placed: The dog howled although he was well fed. Because the dog howled so loudly, the student couldn't complete his assignment. The dog, although he was well fed, howled loudly. Identify the following sentences as simple, compound or complex. 1.

I enjoyed the apple pie that you bought for me. _______________
