Read the following passage carefuly: Despite heavy showers Friday night into yesterday morning, there were seemingly few incidents of flooding. Among the most
affected parishes was St. Andrew. Shortly after the downpour which drenched most of the island, workmen from The Ministry of Transport and Works were busy clearing a gully in Belleplaine. Old tree trunks, branches and other debris too large to pass through the opening under the bridge, had lodged themselves there causing the murky water to rise almost to the height of the road above. At another St. Andrew bridge,
a wall of gabions, serving as a barrier against soil slippage by a gully in Bruce Vale, was no match for the torrents. It had collapsed. After the heavy rains, motorists and pedestrians using the Scotland District were advised to exercise extreme caution

as the possibility of land slippage existed. It was noted that areas such as The Ermie Bourne Highway where culverts were broken causing water to overtop the road, Thompson Bridge where a large boulder damaged the bridge support and White Hill where there had been massive land slippage, were areas of concern. Meanwhile the work of hundreds of Barbadian who had worked to rid South coast beaches of sargassum seaweed was undone when hundreds of pounds of the seaweed were redeposited on these beaches. All this damage was associated with the 13th tropical cyclone for the Atlantic Hurricane season- MARIA. This system which formed in the Atlantic Ocean, passed north of the island on Friday, dumping heavy showers.

The word ‘wow’ in the sentence is being used as an interjection.
An interjection is a word or phrase which expresses an emotion or feeling. Interjections are usually followed by an exclamation mark. However, when a mild emotion is expressed, the interjection is followed by a comma. Wow! What a lovely sunset! (strong emotion) Oh, that is not a problem. Many prepositions may also be used as adverbs and sometimes it becomes somewhat challenging in telling if a particular word is being used as a preposition or an adverb.
A distinction, however, is that a preposition is followed by an object. This object may be a noun or a pronoun.
Example 1: Tamara ran down the road. The word down is a preposition; the road is the object
She looked down. Since there is no object, the word down is doing the work of an adverb.

WORDS AT WORK! So you see, sometimes the same word can do different jobs. Notice that in each case, the word represents a different part of speech.
Look at the word PAST. Example 1:
The truant calmly walked past the school gate.
The word past is showing a relationship between the truant and the school gate, so it is a preposition.
Example 2:
The car sped past.
Example 3:
Past events have set the tone for our friendship.
There is no object for the verb sped, so the word past is being used as an adverb.
Here, the word past describes events. It is an adjective.

In this sentence, past names a particular time. It is being used as a noun.

PROFIT AND LOSS Goods are produced at a certain cost (price). If goods are sold at a higher price than the cost price, then the manufacturer makes a profit or gain. But, if the manufacturer sells goods at lower price than the cost price, then he suffers a loss.
Look carefully at this statement: I bought a bag for $80 and sold it for $95. The Cost Price (the amount I paid for the bag) is lower or less than the Selling Price (the amount of money
for which I sold the bag.) Since I sold my bag for more money than I had paid for it, I say that I made a profit from selling the bag.
If a vendor sells an item or goods for more than he paid for them, then the difference is the profit.
But, if the item or goods are sold at a lower price than the cost price, then he suffers a loss.

INVERSE PROPORTION Did you notice that when unitary method is used, as one amount increases, the other amount increases at the same rate? So that if 1 apple costs 85 cents, then 3 apples would cost three times as much; or if 4 similar packages weigh 12 kg then 1 of those packages would weigh 4 times less. One entity is directly proportional to the other entity. With Inverse Proportion however, the opposite is true - one value decreases at the same rate that the other increases. For example, speed and travel time. Speed and travel time are inversely proportional because the faster the speed, the less
time is taken. As speed goes up, travel time goes down - as speed goes down, travel time goes up.
Mr. Hall is painting a wall. What can he do to have the wall completed in a shorter period of time? (Discuss with your teacher) Did you say he can get another person or other persons to help him? This is an example of inverse proportion. As the number of painters goes up, the painting time comes down; as the number of painters goes down, the painting time goes up.
In inverse proportion, an increase in one quantity results in a decrease in the other. In other words, the more persons
