COMPREHENSION In this section you are required to answer questions by choosing one of four choices given. Only ONE of the answers is correct. Reading ALL the choices more than once will help in identifying the correct one. Begin by eliminating answers that do not make sense. Sometimes two of them may seem correct. In a case like this, go back to the passage and examine the information given. Your answer should be based on the information in the passage. After this, choose your answer. ALWAYS remember to follow the instructions of the question. Read the following passage carefully: It is extremely interesting to note that several doctors, sports planners and fitness enthusiasts are promoting healthy eating habits. Eating fruits and vegetables provide several health benefits. They are rich in fibre and provide nutrients vital for the maintenance of good health.

People who eat more fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy diet are likely to have a reduced risk of some

chronic diseases such as strokes and other cardiovascular diseases. It may also reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes and protect the body against certain cancers such as mouth, stomach and colorectal cancer.

Fruits and vegetables rich in potassium as part of an overall healthy diet may reduce the risk of developing kidney

stones and may help to decrease bone loss.

The following questions are about the passage which you have just read. Circle the CAPITAL LETTER beside the word or phrase which gives the best answer to the question. 1. According to the passage which statement is CORRECT? A. Fruits and vegetables are not always good for us. B. Eating fruits and vegetables provide several health benefits. C. Only doctors promote healthy eating habits. D. None of the above. 2. What do you think are cardiovascular diseases? NATION WORKBOOK

3. verbs agree with their subjects. 4. punctuation used is correct. 5. grammar used is correct

6. the question asked has been answered..

Remember that many of the questions asked test knowledge of vocabulary. Read the following passage carefully. Have you ever seen a bird sitting comfortably on a cow’s back? The bird seems most welcome. However, if another creature goes around the cow it will be chased away immediately.

Animals such as the cow, bison and rhinoceros have ticks and other insects that bite their backs and make them itch.

Instinctively, they welcome the birds who visit to feed on these insects thus making them feel so much relieved and better.

In the animal kingdom there are other instances where animals use the help of other animals to get rid of pests.

Scientists call this mutualism. The relationship between the crocodile and the water dikkop bird is an example of this

mutualism. The crocodile will attempt to eat most birds that come near to it. However, the water dikkops can walk among the crocodiles and even lay their eggs in the same place with the crocodile without being hurt by the crocodiles because these birds eat the insects that bother them.

It is evident that animals recognise that they need each other to survive, peacefully. Humans too must recognise that

we need each other to have a happy world. You have read the passage. Now read again and again and again Have you underlined key words or challenging words? Do it now.

Now read for the last time focusing on meaning. Try reading all the questions. Now start to write. Check each answer carefully.

The following questions are about the passage which you have just read. Write complete sentences in answer to these questions. Pay attention to your spelling and grammar.

THREE DIMENIONAL OBJECTS Remember that a two-dimensional (2D) shape has only two dimensions that we can measure, which are length and breadth. A 2D shape is a shape on a flat surface. A three-dimensional (3D) shape is like any object in the real world, such as a shoe box, a can of beans or a book. 3D objects are also called solids, because they stand up and have thickness. Here are some examples of 3D shapes:

Today’s lesson focuses on the properties of two types namely cubes and cuboids.

THE SURFACE AREA OF A CUBE OR CUBOID Another way to look at the surface area of a cube or cuboid is to consider their net. The net is a 2-dimensional figure that NATION WORKBOOK

This is the net of a cuboid

Finding the Surface Area of a Cube

Surface area is the amount of space covering the outside of a three-dimensional shape. A cube has 6 equal faces. The area of each face is found by squaring the length of the side. To find the total surface area, multiply the area of one face by the number of faces. Or written another way: Surface Area of cube = Side x Side x 6

Remember, area is always written as square measure. Example 1:

What is the surface area of the cube below?

Example 2: Find the length of the edge of a cube if its area is 150cm2.

Finding the surface area of a cuboid

A cuboid has 6 rectangular faces. To find the total surface area of a cuboid, add the areas of all 6 faces. We can also

label the length (l), width (w), and height (h) of the cuboid and use the formula, Surface Area =2(l x w)+2(l x h)+ 2(h x w), to find the surface area.

VOLUME In mathematics, volume is the amount of space inside a three-dimensional object, or its capacity In other words, it is the number of cubes required to fill the shape or object completely, like blocks. Volume is measured in cubes.

The following shapes are made up of 1cm blocks. By counting, find the volume of each shape:

A simple formula can be used to find the volume of a shape. However, the formula for volume varies by shape.

For a cube, the Volume = Side x Side x Side. Since each side of a square is the same, it can simply be the length of one side cubed (that is, multiplied by itself 3 times).

For example: Calculate the volume of a cube of side 5m.

STATISTICS Graphs

Graphs are drawings that show mathematical information with lines, shapes, and colors. Graphs are also known as charts. People use graphs to compare amounts of things or other numbers. Graphs are useful because they can be easier to understand than numbers and words alone. There are many different kinds of graphs. In this lesson we look at two types (i) The bar or column graph (ii) the line graph A bar graph shows amounts as bars of different sizes and, sometimes, of different colors. The longer the bar represent the larger the numbers. A line graph uses dots connected by lines to show how amounts change over time.
