WITH EVERY COMPANY there’s a driving force behind the works they do and the direction they take. In the case of Massy Properties, the man is Shane Sandiford chief executive officer. “Our official rebranding came in August 2014. But it was actually held quiet for about ten months before then. Officially, we had everybody that supplied us with the signage, sign confidentiality agreements to say ‘you are aware of this happening but please don’t tell anyone’. It’s quite interesting because we didn’t think it would work, but it did pretty well,” said Shane. “Massy Properties had taken over BS&T in 2008 and a lot of folks didn’t even realise a lot of the companies they had that Massy Properties had taken over. “It was only in 2014 when we rebranded everything to Massy did everyone realise – well look, there’s Massy Properties formerly S. P. Musson, there’s Massy Distribution, Massy Trading, Massy Shipping Services etc.” “The branding was just one side of it,” Sandiford continued. “It was really to leverage our bulk purchase power as well as a Massy Group. For example, you would have shipping lines dealing with five and six different Massy companies not realising they’re all essentially one company.” The names of the Massy Properties companies like Massy Properties DigiScreen and Massy Properties DesignConcepts, according to Sandiford, arose out of their desire to newly brand them and relaunch their services. Massy Realty has been in existence for 15 years and Massy Properties ProClean has been around since about 2008. Shane also said that the design services, now Massy Properties DesignConcepts, had been a part of the fold since the get-go. “We aren’t launching something new,” said Sandiford. “We’re relaunching services with a new name to get better exposure. For the future, now we’re really going to be focusing on our services. “Historically, we’ve been a property management company. We have 36 properties in the island of Barbados. But we want to branch off into our services and become more diversified. “A lot of our properties are heritage properties so the service element really needs to be promoted more. That’s what this is all about.”

OVER THE YEARS, many companies have been a large part of the Barbadian scenery and most were unaware of their background connections. Today, of course, the name Massy Properties is everywhere throughout the island and is a symbol of quality in whatever capacity it operates. The Massy Group has always been staunch in its values of integrity and ethical business practices, care for its customers and employees, its commitment to grow and deliver superior value for its shareholders and, being a responsible citizen, protecting and giving back to the environment and communities in which it operates. Back in 2014, an astonishing rebranding effort washed like a colourful wave across Barbados with properties converting to the new look and overarching name of Massy Properties. Named after its founder Samuel Paynter Musson, S. P. Musson started out as a wholesale and retail company and was one of the original six companies which formed the Barbados Shipping & Trading Co. Ltd (BS&T) in 1921. BS&T was initially a wholesale commission merchant and an importer as well as an exporter of sugar and molasses. S. P. Musson Son & Co. Ltd. merged with Dacosta & Co. Ltd in 1965 and S. P. Musson the company ceased to exist except in the “books”. However, the history of the Massy name goes back much further. In 1932, Neal Engineering, led by Harry Neal, and Massy Limited, led by Charles Massy, merged to create Neal & Massy Engineering Company Limited. In 1981, a study was done by an American company and it was suggested that BS&T start a property management company because it owned too many derelict buildings. BS&T then transferred properties from other BS&T companies to form such a company. Thus S. P. Musson was re-established with a new
role within the group. By 2008, Neal & Massy acquired the Barbados Shipping & Trading Company Limited which has positioned the Group as one of the largest Caribbean corporations in the region. Today, Massy Properties boasts a staff complement of 43 and are a small company when compared to many of their sister companies under the Massy name. According to Ian Donovan, marketing manager for Massy Properties, “Our company is run by our managing director Shane Sandiford who works closely with his management team to ensure we provide the best possible service to our over 200 rental customers. “To achieve this, we have two customer service reps, Sharon Bynoe and Keesha Garner who work with our building supervisors – Patrick Watson, Sharlene Maynard, and Alvin Kellman – to ensure all challenges faced by our clients are rectified as quickly as possible,” he added. “We also take health and safety very seriously here, not just with our staff, but also with our customers and contractors as well. That’s where Natalee Harrigan, the lady with the long title comes in. Natalee is our health safety security environment (HSSE) officer and she makes sure everything we do is done to the highest safety standards,” he said. Today, Massy Properties is held aloft by some of the best in the business. Their accounts department is managed by Pauline Sydney-Taitt. The Massy DesignConcepts is managed by Steven Simpson. Building and Rental is managed by Ermine Blenman assisted by Letoya Bowen and Massy Realty is managed by Shane Sandiford and assisted by Letoya Bowen.

You might think that would be a very easy thing to do, but it wasn’t. “We first had numerous brainstorming sessions to pick the names and then we sought guidance from Massy Properties (both in Barbados and Trinidad),” Donovan said. “As a result we are proud to welcome, Massy Properties ProClean, our A/C duct cleaning service, Massy Properties DigiScreen our digital screen advertising, and Massy Properties DesignConcepts our interior design and architectural department which not only provides services for corporate Barbados, but also for individuals wanting house plans created.” According to Donovan, “We have always had very imaginative out-the-
box thinking managing directors, but our current managing director, Shane Sandiford, doesn’t acknowledge the box at all. We are encouraged to think big and as a result we are able to delve into several non-traditional areas. We either try to come up with something new or we look to improve an existing service.” The new look comes with more than a few new names and logos, but with a new home base and face of Massy Properties as well. “We felt it was time that Massy Properties had an office that showcased and represented the creativity, imagination, and professionalism you can expect from us. “We have senior designer Steven Simpson and designer Adrian Taylor of Massy Properties DesignConcepts to thank for the awesome design of our new offices.” said Donovan. Massy Properties is well known for their renovation of properties, especially old warehouses. They have received high acclaim for preserving the flavour of the traditional architecture of old Bridgetown. Some of these buildings are Bridge House located in Cavans Lane, James Fort Building and Musson Building in Hincks Street, and of course, Thomas Daniel Building which is now their new home.

Given the training investment the company makes in its employees, I have been able to capitalise on those opportunities and at present, I am one of the building supervisors. I supervise the day-to-day maintenance of a number of Massy Properties, including our buildings at Cavans Lane, and Coles building. This includes the supervision of all caretaking staff, namely Roger Williams and Norma Sealy. In addition, I also oversee all major repairs and refurbishing of these properties, which entails meeting potential contractors, customers, and clients. I have completed a number of training programmes while with the company, including customer service, Strategic Leadership and I am currently studying Facilities Management at the UWI Open Campus. Overall, I can say that I enjoy my job at Massy Properties because we function as one team with one goal.

With over ten years’ experience in architecture, property management, project management, interior design, construction, and a Master’s Degree in Building and Construction Management, it only felt natural to move on to a job such as this with a great team spirit and for an organisation whose core values comprise honesty, integrity, and care – values that I live by daily. Simpson admitted, “To say that most of our projects were trouble-free would be untrue, but there are some projects that had issues that hampered the project in a dramatic way. “An example of this was when we managed a project and had to order several pieces of equipment from overseas, only to find out that the voltage for the equipment was different from what we had specified. This had great implications for the project because it meant we had to upgrade the entire power supply for the space, which in turn increased the cost and potentially delayed the project. “When clients consult with us, they should have an idea of what they want from the design, giving us as much information as they can, highlighting the necessary requirements for the project and telling us their likes and dislikes, so, we can focus on the design elements that will hopefully meet their goals,” Simpson said. He went on to say, “We are contemporary and modern in our outlook, with a heavy reliance on what the client wants the design to look like, which is always important to the company.”

I’ve worked at Massy Properties for over 25 years and I am now the senior designer at Massy Properties DesignConcepts. It has been a very fulfilling time working for this company, starting at the company back in the 1990s when it was then S.P. Musson Son & Co. Ltd. I’ve been able to work in an environment that has allowed me to explore and enhance my design skills.

Is a chartered designer, trained in England at the Berkshire College of Art and Design. He has worked at Massy Properties since 1997. His responsibilities include renovations and new construction for the Barbadian Massy Properties subsidiaries; land development and commercial rental development. He has even designed roads and residential developments. Fenty, as a designer, has designed well over 100 exhibitions, residences, commercial and manufacturing buildings. As part of the Massy Properties team, DesignConcepts designs mostly for themselves and their group companies. They designed, built, and own the iconic Massy Dome in 1999, headquarters for Massy Properties Barbados and have made renovations to their many heritage buildings. Other notable projects include the Massy United Insurance second floor addition and renovations to the entire building; with Steven Simpson, senior design, the Dome Mall; and Brandons West for DaCosta Mannings.

MASSY PROPERTIES DIGISCREEN was created because their managing director, Shane Sandiford, saw the potential of the growing digital advertising industry. IAN DONOVAN’S name constantly comes up as he’s the marketing manager for Massy Properties and is behind promotions of such import as the Dome Mall, Kensington Mall, and so much more. Since the rebranding efforts of Massy Properties began in 2014, the omnipresent appearance of the Massy name is owed to the marketing of their brand. But more than just marketing, Donovan has worked with Massy for most of his life in many arenas. “I joined the company shortly after graduating college with my Associates of Arts degree in interior design,” said Donovan. “At that time, I was the resident designer’s assistant.
