What makes a house a home?
Rather than delve into the spiritual and psychological, let’s get practical.
A home encompasses the house, yard, garden (hopefully), furnishings and fittings, and all that makes it comfortable. Of course, your own decorative taste gives your space some measure of uniqueness, as well as “pieces” that complement the décor. Yes, home is where the heart is, as well as the airconditioning and solar systems, the plants in the garden, bookshelves and, for some of us, a home EV charger.
To make sure that your “castle” continues to be more of a comfort than a challenge, the focus this quarter is on the smarter side of homeownership.
And what better way to start than a nostalgic look at Bajan architecture and its influence on modern design? No need for a time machine, you can rely on Professor Sir Henry Fraser’s memory and expertise. Coupled with his perspective, Old versus New is the perfect companion piece for this back-in-time experience. Trace the origins of the now practical household appliances and building standards – jucking boards upgraded to washing machines; dirt floors evolve to ceramic tiles – truly awesome transformations!
There’s a “science” to buying plants, and Dominique Toppin shares the wisdom. Trust us, your next purchase will go beyond what’s pretty, can fit the pot and grow fastest. Whether flower or fruit, vine or vegan, take your botanicals to the next level.
For the DIYers in da house, the art of “shelf staging” should get your attention. The practice actually says it all. A resting place for memories, memorabilia and much more, this feature declutters how to make them practical and appealing. And why not save money by doing your own maintenance? Not on shelves, but the air-conditioner. Cleaning need not be left to the pros if you get a basic understanding of an AC unit and follow the step-bystep instructions given.
Solar energy has become a common convenience – knowledge of the fundamentals, its importance and benefits, is a must for the modern homeowner. So too is keeping abreast of the newest trends in energy-efficient transportation. We have included two features to help readers make informed decisions about these renewable resources.
We also want to assist with your H-game. Hurricane preparedness is just as much a part of home ownership as repairing broken furniture. Lest you think you’re already ready, our timely reminders to secure that roof over your head can serve as a checklist. Bad weather is seasonal but protection from destructive pests is year-round. Puppy-proofing the house is also on the DIY list.
Buckle up. The EV-charged journey to Home Sweet Home begins.

The impressive and sometimes imposing modern structures are testimony to the advances in engineering technology that now dominate our landscape. But no matter how tall or glamorous, their effort to erase the idyllic charm of the chattel house has failed miserably.
Taking sides with the “David” of Barbadian architecture against the ‘Goliath” of new
building techniques is Trevor ‘John’ Hercules, whose house takes pride of place in the quiet community of President Kennedy Drive.
Ralph’s efforts to preserve a disappearing part of our heritage is every bit a story of personal pride as it is about keeping chattels relevant.
On any given day, passers-by can find the retiree painting and beautifying his home.
The brown with white trim is elegantly accented by well-kept surroundings. We at Smart Homes join in that fight through print, but a visit to Tyrol Cot, former home of Bajan hero Sir Grantley Adams, to see some well-preserved replicas of this important piece of Barbados' history definitely packs more of a punch. Reading can be informative, but seeing is believing.

OLD VS NEW
by Nakiah Thomas-Edwards
Advances in technology also impacted the design and functionality of furniture and utensils.
There’s a lot to be said about home furniture and kitchen utensils of old in terms of the length of time they last.
There’s also a lot to be said about the modern or contemporary, both in function and design. (Who remembers a chamber pot {potty or poe} and the kerosene lamp? Thank God for indoor plumbing, the flushing toilet and LED lights!)
Advances in technology also impacted the design and functionality of furniture and utensils, making them much more efficient and convenient. Modern designs of furniture, utensils and appliances are as much about functionality as they are about aesthetics. Our full and fast-paced lifestyle and shrinking living spaces require that the things we use today are simple, quick and easy to use, or serve multiple purposes.
Let’s take a look at some of the old and how they have evolved to their newer editions.
• We’ve moved away from the woodburning stove and cast-iron stove to its
sleeker and more futuristic electric stove, after decades of various iterations of gas stoves. From one burner to multiple burners and an inside oven! Then the oven again revolutionised and became a microwave and a toaster oven. Cooking on an open fire is an age-old practice that still remains despite that evolution.
• Clay or ceramic pots for cooking made room for non-stick cookware with Teflon coating or stainless steel pots and pans
• Graters and food presses have paved the way for electric blenders and juicers. Food processors became the only tool needed in a kitchen at one point, as they performed the functions of a myriad of utensils.
• The washing machine replaced the jucking board, while electric dryers have replaced the sun. Washing machines come with various cycles and settings to accommodate the different types of fabrics being manufactured.
• The wooden rocking chair has given way
to the ergonomic swivel chair with back support. Some even come with a massage function.
• The monkey or icebox has been upgraded to become a refrigerator with a freezer and automatic defrost function. Fridges, as they are now commonly known, come in a range of sizes and freezers (aka deep freeze) are also now separate.
• The modern take on the butter churn and mortar and pestle are the electric blender or spice grinder and food processor.
• The hand-cranked coffee grinder has evolved to an electric coffee grinder (with adjustable settings).
• A hand-held tin can opener also comes in an electric version. The manual can openers are now made with a safety edge.
• The metal iron for pressing gave way to an easy-to-hold steam iron with built-in temperature control. Ironing boards now come with adjustable height.
Inspiration & INNOVATION 7

•
The larder is no longer a stand-alone piece of furniture to store food. This first iteration of a kitchen cupboard eventually became incorporated into the entire design to create a clean minimalist-looking kitchen decor.
It doesn’t take a deep study to see that these modern counterparts of old kitchen furniture, utensils and appliances often offer increased efficiency, convenience, and safety compared to their older counterparts. There are other reasons why modern or contemporary home items will always be trending – their design, functionality and contribution to greening the environment. Modern furniture and appliances embrace minimalism and simplicity, featuring
clean lines, sleek surfaces, and geometric shapes. Today’s designs prioritise functionality and practicality over the ornamental details found in the craftsmanship of wooden items. Materials like glass, steel, and plastic are mainly used, reflecting a contemporary and streamlined aesthetic.
While charming and often durable, older furniture and appliances lack the advanced features and technologies found in their modern counterparts. Modern furniture and appliances often boast enhanced functionality and efficiency. Today’s appliances are energy-efficient and offer conveniences such as digital controls or smart capabilities. They are designed with advanced technology and innovation,
like programmable settings, energysaving modes, and connectivity options for remote control or monitoring. Depending on their age and materials, older furniture and appliances may have a higher environmental impact due to factors such as energy inefficiency, use of non-renewable resources, or lack of eco-friendly manufacturing processes. With growing awareness of sustainability and environmental responsibility, modern furniture and appliances increasingly prioritise ecofriendly materials, energy efficiency, and recyclability. Manufacturers may incorporate sustainable practices into their production processes, contributing to a more environmentally conscious approach to interior decor.

MAKING THE MOST OF EVERY INCH
Home design often urges us to envision optimal use of grand spaces and splurge on lavish accessories for multiple bedrooms. However, for the average person, reality eventually sets in and you have to get to work fitting your two-bedroom, one-bathroom house on a budget. Decorating small spaces presents unique challenges and opportunities. Maximising every square inch is vital for new homeowners, without sacrificing style or functionality. Strategic furniture choices, clever storage solutions, and innovative design ideas can transform small spaces into stylish and functional sanctuaries.
Choosing flooring is the first consideration. Hardwood flooring offers timeless elegance and can visually expand the space, especially with long planks installed parallel to the longest wall. Laminate flooring provides a budget-friendly alternative with a durable, scratch-resistant surface mimicking natural wood. Vinyl flooring, available in various designs, offers versatility and easy maintenance. Space-enhancing tiles like large-format porcelain or light-coloured ceramic tiles can visually enlarge the room while providing durability.
Creating a functional kitchen and dining area in a small space requires creativity. Multi-functional furniture like extendable dining tables or kitchen islands with built-in seating maximises space utilisation. Compact appliances like slimline refrigerators save floor space without compromising functionality. Clever storage solutions such as vertical shelving and pull-out pantry units keep clutter at bay.
Space-saving fixtures like pedestal sinks or wall-mounted toilets and vanities create openness in a small bathroom. Vertical space can be utilised with shelves or cabinets above the toilet or beside the vanity. Mirrored cabinets add storage and visually enlarge the room.
Arranging furniture in a small bedroom requires careful consideration. Choosing a focal point like the bed and positioning it against the longest wall creates openness. Spacesaving furniture options like platform beds with built-in storage or wall-mounted bedside tables free up floor space.
In a small living room, appropriately sized furniture and multi-functional pieces like sofa beds or ottomans with hidden storage create a functional space. Seating arranged around a central focal point encourages conversation while nesting tables or stackable stools save floor space.
Decorating and furnishing small spaces requires creativity and strategic planning. From flooring options to furniture layouts, embracing multi-functional furniture and clever storage solutions can transform even the tiniest spaces into stylish sanctuaries on a reasonable budget.

• Additional Features: Wi-Fi connectivity for remote monitoring and control, smart charging capabilities to optimise energy usage, and warranty coverage for peace of mind should also be taken into consideration. By weighing these factors against your specific needs and budget, you can confidently select the charging equipment that best suits your lifestyle.
The installation process for a home EV charging station typically involves several key steps. Begin by obtaining any necessary permits from local authorities to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations. Next, enlist the expertise of a licensed electrician to assess your home’s electrical system and install the charging station safely and efficiently. Professional installation is the best course of action to ensure proper wiring, grounding, and compliance with local regulations, guaranteeing the safety of both your home and EV. By entrusting the installation to qualified professionals, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing that your charging station is installed correctly and ready to power your EV reliably.
Retrofitting your home for EV charging entails several costs, including equipment purchase and installation fees. However, incentives and rebates may offset some expenses. Longterm savings from reduced fuel and maintenance costs can further enhance the return on investment. By carefully considering these factors, homeowners can make informed decisions about integrating EV charging into their homes.
Home EV charging offers numerous benefits, from environmental sustainability to financial savings. Proper planning and professional installation are essential for maximising these advantages. Explore the options and take proactive steps towards making your homes EV-ready and contributing to a cleaner and more efficient future.

SOLAR SIMPLIFIED
by Dominique Toppin
Over the last few years, there has been an upswing in talk and action surrounding solar power.
As the leading contender in the quest for sustainable power sources, solar energy is abundant, reliable and ecofriendly. As such, there is no doubt that with more informed discussion and action, more people would take a look into transitioning. Solar power presents what many renewable energy advocates consider a promising solution to our energy needs while mitigating environmental impacts. However, for many, the idea of transitioning to solar power can seem daunting, due to discussions
surrounding it being heavily laden with technical jargon and complex systems. Don’t panic! The Smart Homes team will aim to demystify solar power, breaking down its key components and benefits in a simplified manner.
The first step to truly gaining an understanding is by breaking down definitions. At its core, solar power refers to the conversion of sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells, typically mounted on solar panels. These cells contain semiconductor materials, such as silicon, which absorb sunlight and release electrons to ultimately generate an electrical current. This process is known as photovoltaic
effect and forms the basis of solar power generation.
See below some of the key components of solar power:
Solar Panels – These are the most recognisable components of a solar power system. They consist of interconnected PV cells enclosed in a protective frame. They come in various sizes and types, with monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels being the most common.
Inverter – Solar panels produce direct current (DC) electricity, which needs to be converted into alternating current (AC) electricity for use in homes and businesses.

Another main pro of solar power is the significant reduction seen in electricity bills
Basically, inverters perform this crucial task, ensuring compatibility with existing electrical systems.
Mounting Structure – Solar panels require sturdy mounting structures to secure them in place, usually on rooftops or ground-mounted arrays. Proper installation ensures optimal sunlight exposure and system efficiency.
Battery Storage – While battery storages are considered optional and not necessary, they are used to store excess solar energy for use during low sunlight periods or for high energy demands. This provides backup power and increases self-sufficiency.
Outside of the key components, one must also be aware of the significant benefits that having a solar power
system can provide. Unlike finite fossil fuels, sunlight is abundant and inexhaustible. This makes it the leading choice for sustainable long-term use.
Another main pro of solar power is the significant reduction seen in electricity bills and even reimbursements through power companies. With generating electricity through solar power, the result is significantly lowering or in some cases eliminating the reliance on grid-supplied power and substantial savings.
While the installation process can seem daunting, once completed, solar panels require minimal maintenance, with occasional cleaning and inspection. This translates to a hasslefree operation with the reassurance of
cost savings.
One of the most important benefits that solar power is known to have is its sustainability. Since it produces no greenhouse gas emissions or air pollutants during operation, it can help us all combat climate change and ultimately improve our air quality.
There is no doubt that solar power holds immense potential as a clean, sustainable and readily accessible power source for homes, businesses and communities worldwide. Therefore, by understanding the fundamentals, its importance and benefits, individuals are better able to make informed decisions to embrace this renewable resource and contribute to a greener, more sustainable nation and future.

BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES
by Nick Nunes
Living in Barbados, an exquisite gem of an island in the Caribbean, offers many advantages, but it also comes with the annual threat of hurricanes during the Atlantic hurricane season, which typically runs from June 1 to November 30. To ensure the safety and security of your home and family, it’s essential to be well-prepared and proactive in mitigating the potential risks. Here are some essential tips for preparing your home:
1. Develop a Comprehensive Emergency Plan
Before hurricane season begins, it’s crucial to develop a comprehensive emergency plan for your household. This plan should
outline evacuation routes, designated shelters, emergency contacts, and procedures for securing your home and belongings. Involve all members of your household in the planning process and ensure everyone understands their roles and responsibilities.
2. Secure Your Property
Start by inspecting your home and property for any vulnerabilities or areas that may need reinforcement. Here are some steps you can take to secure your property:
Trim Trees and Shrubs: Trim branches and foliage to reduce the risk of falling debris during high winds. Remove any dead or weak trees that pose a threat to your home or
surrounding structures.
Secure Outdoor Furniture and Objects: Store or secure outdoor furniture, grills, and other objects that could become projectiles in strong winds. Anchor lightweight items or bring them indoors.
Install Storm Shutters or Plywood: Install storm shutters or plywood over windows and doors to protect them from flying debris and wind damage. THE HISTORY OF BARBADIAN ARCHITECTURE AND ITS INFLUENCE ON MODERN DESIGN T
by Professor Emeritus Sir Henry Fraser
he history of Barbadian architecture is rich and interesting. Its evolution has been extensively documented (Fraser and Hughes, Fraser, Fraser and Kiss, Fraser and Pena), but little has been written about the recent trends of the last 50 to 75 years. In the first decade or two after the Anglo-African settlement in 1627, all homes, churches and other buildings would have been built of wood. But the extensive and easily quarried limestone provided valuable construction material, and the building of stone houses and churches, built of rough-hewn or rubble stone with lime mortar, soon became standard practice. By the 1830s, following the devastating hurricane of 1831, the urgent need for rebuilding led to the development of block coral stone, which accelerated restoration and produced stronger buildings.
With the profits from sugar, a great deal of major building went on in the 18th century - at the height of the fashion for so-called Georgian architecture (named for the King Georges of England). Buildings were symmetrical, with central entrances and balanced arrangement of windows and parapet roofs, and larger houses had large sash windows, but there was little intricate decoration. Commercial buildings such as factories and warehouses shared some of these features and churches in the 18th century were essentially plain and Georgian in design. The arcaded buildings of the Garrison (circa 1800) made Roman arches popular in many larger buildings.
Inspiration & INNOVATION 27
Design features were to some extent inspired by the Georgian style of larger houses
At the other end of the social scale, the enslaved population lived predominantly in simple huts of timber plastered with mud and roofs thatched with branches of the Barbados thatch palm or cane trash, until the period after the 1780 hurricane, which killed thousands and destroyed the vast majority of houses. The result was the introduction of stone huts – chiefly of two rooms – built with rubble stone and thatched. These would have been essentially indestructible except for the loss of the thatched roof. A replica of these can be seen in the Tyrol Cot Heritage Village. A major change in house style came about with emancipation when the new social order gave the formerly enslaved population a degree of freedom of movement for a better
job. As a result, wooden houses constructed with imported pine were developed, and these were built in sections so they could be taken apart easily, relocated by oxcart and rebuilt on the same day. These chattel houses began as two-room structures but evolved many ingenious features. They were enlarged by adding new units to the rare as a family grew. They had relatively large windows and doors, with jalousie shutters for ventilation when closed, and while earlier houses had hipped roofs these changed to gable roofs with 45-degree angles, excellent for deflecting and surviving hurricane winds.
Design features were to some extent inspired by the Georgian style of larger houses – symmetrical plans with a
harmonious, symmetrical arrangement of windows and doors. When Panama money began to flow into Barbados in the early 20th century, major improvements were made, with larger houses, elegant Palladian-style front entrance porches or open verandas, and fretwork decoration.
While larger stone houses influenced chattel house design, the latter in turn influenced suburban design for the modest and middle-class “villa”. Carpenters built what they were familiar with! These villas were larger than chattel houses, built in the old suburbs of Spooners Hill, Bank Hall, Belleville and Hastings, often of wood on a raised stone foundation or stone or a mixture of wood and stone. Their symmetrical
28 May 2024
appearance, with multiple sections and gable roofs, were essentially chattel houses “writ large” – so one can see a continuity of plans and appearance across the spectrum of small working class, middle class and planter class homes. Conservative Barbadians continued for almost a hundred years to build very similar houses to those of previous generations.
However, individual builders and developers clearly influenced house design. A popular style emerged in the late 1930s that persisted for some 20 years at least …that of a stone house with a corner veranda with stone pillars, and a standard floor plan. It was allegedly developed by Dr Terry Hawkins, a builder and developer, and was widely copied for several decades.
The modern era of the last 50 years has seen major departures from tradition. The American ranch style was introduced in the 1950s and 60s, largely due to the major creative influence of architect the late Tony Hoad, whose variations on the American
ranch style were widely copied. Increasingly village housing has been transformed from clusters of chattel houses with replacement by modest concrete bungalows of essentially ranch style – low-lying with flat or gently sloping roofs. Some, inspired by traditional arches and traditional window hoods, retain those well-known details.
But with the many internationally trained architects today many different styles have emerged across the country. Many prosperous owners have commissioned elegant coral stone houses of traditional designs, influenced by the Georgian/Palladian features of the past. There are even some virtual replicas of 19th-century plantation houses and splendid modern versions of chattel houses. Others have gone for the very modern, occasional Spanish style or even brutalist design. The result is a plethora of international-looking houses mixed with the traditional.
Church architecture, while a story of its own, is perhaps simpler. Virtually all early
churches were destroyed by hurricanes, and post-1780 rebuilding was undertaken in Georgian style, with some affectionately retained Gothic detail. Following the influence of the first Anglican bishop, Bishop Coleridge, the Neo-Gothic style was introduced in every single new church building, with the addition of Gothic chancels to Georgian churches. I have called this the Barbadian Gothic Renaissance, and it has been perpetuated throughout the 20th century with Gothic details such as pointed arched windows and doors.
One of the great advantages of our traditional architecture was the physical comfort of those spaces, including verandas and natural ventilation. Too much modern design is more suitable for cold climates and demands huge expenditure on high cost and climate-unfriendly air conditioning, with all of the negative consequences. Perhaps there is increasing awareness of these issues which is promoting greater use of energy conservation and aesthetically more pleasing traditional designs.

HOME HACKS HAVEN
Work smart, not hard. This is valuable advice in today’s “constantly going” world, and finding ways to simplify chores can significantly lower the difficulty setting in your life. That’s where home hacks come in. These clever and practical tips and tricks can transform any living space, making everyday tasks easier and more efficient. From maximising storage in the bedroom to streamlining meal prep in the kitchen, home hacks offer endless
possibilities for improving the functionality and comfort of your home. In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of implementing simple hacks in various rooms of the house, helping you create a more organised, enjoyable, and stress-free living environment.
Bedroom Hacks
Consider using a shoe organiser on the back of the bedroom door to create additional storage space for small items. This versatile solution is perfect for stashing away socks, accessories, or even cleaning supplies,
keeping them easily accessible yet out of sight. By using the often-unused space behind the door, you can maximise storage in even the smallest of bedrooms. Make good use of bedside organisation by placing a bedside caddy. This convenient accessory allows you to keep essential items such as books, glasses, and electronics within arm’s reach without cluttering the nightstand. With multiple pockets and compartments, a bedside caddy offers a tidy solution for storing nighttime essentials, promoting a clutter-free and peaceful sleep environment.
30 May 2024
Additionally, it’s easily removable and portable, making it ideal for use in any bedroom layout.
Living room Hacks
Simplify organisation by attaching adhesive hooks to the inside of cabinet doors. This clever hack provides a convenient spot to hang keys, remote controls, or small tools, keeping them organised and easily accessible. The space behind cabinet doors can be used to efficiently store frequently used items while reducing clutter on tabletops and surfaces.
After a few years in your home, you will inevitably want to adjust the layout eventually. Make rearranging furniture a breeze by placing furniture sliders under heavy items. These sliders allow you to effortlessly move sofas, coffee tables, and other bulky furniture without straining your back or scratching your floors. Whether you’re cleaning or redesigning your living room layout, furniture sliders make the process smooth and stress-free. Simply place them under the legs or corners of your furniture and glide them across the floor with ease.
Bathroom Hacks
Vertical storage space under the sink can be utilised by using a tension rod. Hang spray bottles, cleaning supplies, or even hand towels on the rod to keep the under-sink area organised. This simple yet effective hack optimises storage in small bathrooms, making it easy to access frequently used items while keeping the space tidy.
Streamline your morning routine by enhancing your shower with a magnetic strip. Attach the strip to the inside of your bathroom cabinet door or wall to securely hold metal grooming tools such as tweezers, nail clippers, or bobby pins. This clever solution ensures that small items are easily accessible yet orderly helping to keep your bathroom counter clear and your grooming essentials within reach.
Kitchen Hacks
Declutter your refrigerator by placing a lazy Susan inside. This rotating platform allows you to access items stored in the back without the need to rummage through shelves. Simply spin the lazy Susan to easily reach condiments, beverages, or leftovers, making use of all the space in your fridge and reducing food wastage in your home.
Repurpose an old drawer organiser into a DIY spice rack. Place the shallow organiser inside a kitchen cabinet or pantry shelf and arrange spice jars or containers within the compartments. This creative hack creates a customised spice storage solution that keeps your favourite seasonings organised and easily accessible. Not only does it maximise space, but it also brings an arranged and stylish look to your kitchen, making meal prep more efficient and enjoyable.
Outdoor Hacks
Elevate your outdoor gatherings with a DIY beverage holder. Repurpose a wooden pallet by attaching hooks for hanging cups or mugs. This simple yet effective hack keeps drinks within reach and off the ground, preventing spills and freeing up space on tables or countertops during patio parties or barbecues. Plus, it adds a rustic touch to your outdoor decor.
Create a cosy ambience on your patio without drilling holes or using nails by using outdoor adhesive hooks. Hang string lights or lanterns along the patio railing to add soft, atmospheric lighting to your outdoor space. This quick and easy hack instantly transforms your patio into a charming and inviting area for relaxing or entertaining, whether it’s a quiet evening alone or a lively gathering with friends and family.

PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR A NEW PUPPY: A Comprehensive Guide
by Nick Nunes
Bringing a new puppy into your home is an exciting and joyful experience, but it also requires careful planning and preparation to ensure a smooth transition for both you and your furry friend. From creating a safe environment to stocking up on essentials, here’s a comprehensive guide to preparing your house for a new puppy.
1. Puppy-Proofing Your Home
Before your new puppy arrives, it’s essential to puppy-proof your home to prevent accidents and keep your furry friend safe. Here are some steps to take: Remove Hazards: Identify and eliminate potential hazards such as electrical cords, toxic
plants, small objects that could be swallowed, and household chemicals. Keep medications, cleaning supplies, and other dangerous substances out of reach.
Secure Trash Bins: Use bins with lids or place them in cabinets to prevent your puppy from rummaging through the trash and ingesting harmful items.
Block Off Restricted Areas: Use baby gates or barriers to block off areas of your home that are off-limits to your puppy, such as stairs, balconies, or rooms with valuable or delicate items.
Cover Electrical Outlets: Install outlet covers to prevent your puppy from chewing on electrical cords or sticking their nose into outlets.
Hide Cables and Wires: Bundle and secure
cables and wires to prevent your puppy from chewing on them and risking electrocution or injury.
Remove Choking Hazards: Pick up small items like coins, buttons, and rubber bands that could pose a choking hazard if swallowed.
2. Setting Up a Comfortable Space
Create a designated space in your home where your puppy can rest, eat, and play comfortably. Here’s what you’ll need: Dog Bed or Crate: Provide a soft, comfortable bed or crate where your puppy can sleep and relax. Make sure it’s large enough for your puppy to stretch out comfortably but cozy enough to feel secure.
Food and Water Bowls: Choose sturdy, non-toxic bowls that are easy to clean and
34 May 2024
won’t tip over easily. Place them in a quiet area away from high-traffic places.
Toys and Chewables: Provide a variety of toys and chewables to keep your puppy entertained and mentally stimulated. Opt for toys made of durable materials that are safe for chewing.
Potty Training Supplies: If you’re planning to potty train your puppy indoors, invest in pee pads, puppy pads, or a designated indoor potty area.
3. Stocking Up on Essentials
Gather all the necessary supplies to ensure you’re fully equipped to care for your new puppy. Here’s a checklist of essentials:
Premium Puppy Food: Choose a highquality puppy food that meets your puppy’s nutritional needs. Consult your veterinarian for recommendations based on your puppy’s age, breed, and dietary requirements.
Collar and Leash: Purchase a lightweight, adjustable collar and a sturdy leash for walking and training sessions. Make sure the collar is fitted properly and doesn’t cause discomfort or restrict your puppy’s movement.
Identification Tags: Get personalised identification tags with your puppy’s name, your contact information, and proof of rabies vaccination. Attach them securely to your puppy’s collar in case they wander off or get lost.
Grooming Supplies: Invest in grooming supplies such as a soft brush or comb, puppy-friendly shampoo, nail clippers, and a toothbrush and toothpaste formulated for dogs. Establish a regular grooming routine to keep your puppy clean and healthy.
Health care Essentials: Stock up on essential health care items such as
flea and tick preventatives, deworming medications, first-aid supplies, and a pet thermometer. Schedule a wellness check-up with your veterinarian to ensure your puppy is up to date on vaccinations and parasite control.
4. Establishing House Rules and Training
Consistency is key when it comes to training your new puppy and establishing house rules. Here are some tips for successful training:
Establish a Routine: Set a consistent schedule for feeding, potty breaks, playtime, and training sessions. Puppies thrive on routine and predictability, so stick to a schedule as much as possible.
Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward good behaviour with praise, treats, or toys to reinforce positive habits and encourage learning. Avoid punishment-based training methods, as they can lead to fear and anxiety.
Socialisation: Introduce your puppy to new people, animals, and environments gradually to help them develop confidence and social skills. Enrol in puppy socialisation classes or arrange playdates with other vaccinated dogs to facilitate positive interactions. Basic Commands: Teach your puppy basic commands such as sit, stay, come, and down using positive reinforcement techniques. Be patient and consistent. Practise training exercises in short, frequent sessions to keep your puppy engaged and focused.
5. Safety and Emergency Preparedness
Prepare for emergencies and unexpected situations to ensure the safety and well-being of your puppy. Here’s what you can do:
Create an Emergency Kit: Assemble an emergency kit containing essential supplies such as first-aid items, medications, copies of medical records, food, water, and comfort items for your puppy.
Pet-Proofing Your Yard: Inspect your yard for potential hazards such as gaps in fences, toxic plants, sharp objects, and escape routes. Secure gates and boundaries to prevent your puppy from wandering off or getting into trouble.
Emergency Contact Information: Keep a list of emergency contact numbers, including your veterinarian’s office, an emergency veterinary clinic, and animal poison control hotline, in case of accidents or emergencies.
Microchipping: Consider microchipping your puppy as a reliable form of permanent identification. Register your contact information with the microchip provider and keep it updated in case your puppy goes missing. By taking the time to prepare your home and family for the arrival of a new puppy, you can ensure a smooth transition and set the stage for a lifetime of love, companionship, and unforgettable memories. This guide should help any new pet owner feel more confident and prepared for the exciting journey of welcoming a furry friend into their home!

HOW TO STAGE A SHELF
Shelves are more than just functional storage units; instead, they are more of an opportunity to showcase a unique personality, and when done properly can work wonders in elevating the overall aesthetic of your workspace or home. Whether it is a bookshelf,
floating shelf or built-in unit, staging your shelves can turn them into focal points that draw the eye and reflect your style.
But does it need to be an expensive task? Fortunately, no. With a few DIY staging techniques, you can transform any shelf into a curated display that is both stylish and functional. So, let us start.
Before diving into staging, it is important to start with a clean slate. Take a moment to remove everything from the shelf and give it a good clean. Make sure to remove dust and debris, and wipe down the surfaces to ensure a fresh canvas for design and décor. This first step also allows you to assess the size and shape, giving you a more accurate idea of how to plan the staging accordingly.
When it comes to creating visual interest and appeal, layering items on the shelf adds a measure of depth and dimension to the overall display. Start by placing larger items towards the back as anchors, such as books or artwork. Smaller items can then be layered in front to create a visually appealing arrangement. Feel free to experiment with different sizes, heights and textures to create your best dynamic display.
A well-styled shelf usually incorporates a mix of objects, from decorative accents to plants. Never be afraid to experiment with different materials such as wood, metal, glass or ceramic as these items add a fresh level of visual interest. Of course, it is your shelf, so make sure to choose items that you think would reflect your personality but still complement the overall style of the room.
Plants as an addition to your shelf is a great way to breathe life into the display. From small succulents to trailing vines or potted small plants, a sense of colour and a touch of nature can often soften the display and bring a touch of nature indoors.
A common widely known term in decorating is ‘less is more’. So, when selecting items for the shelf, consider scale and proportion. Avoid overcrowding the shelf with too many small objects or overwhelming it with oversized pieces. Make sure to aim for a balanced mix of sizes to create more of a visual harmony.
Feel free to place an added measure of personal touch. Whether it is a souvenir, a cherished photo or a family heirloom, these types of items usually add character and warmth to the overall display.
Once you have staged your shelf, make sure to take a step back and look at the overall composition. Take time to make edits by removing any item that feels out of place or cluttered. This step is a major factor in achieving a cohesive and visually appealing display.
That’s it! By following these DIY staging tips, you can be well on your way to transforming any basic shelf into a stylish focal point that not only reflects your personality but greatly enhances your overall home aesthetic.

HOW TO CHOOSE PLANTS
Some of the things which stand out in Barbados are stunning beaches, a vibrant culture and the natural beauty of lush landscapes. For locals, there is no denying the allure of creating a garden paradise in what is considered the heart of the Caribbean. However, with such a unique climate and environment, it can be difficult to decide what will be the perfect plants to fit into your garden.
Fear not, though, for this is a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the world of tropical gardening and turn your outdoor
space into a lush retreat.
First of all, we must all understand the climate conditions. Since we enjoy a tropical climate with warm temperatures, occasional rainfall, and surrounding coasts, which are exposed to salt spray, it would be in the best interest to choose plants that are wellsuited to the climate and soil conditions. For example, plants such as bougainvillaea, heliconia and frangipani are known to thrive better in our environment as they require minimal maintenance once established. These options not only add beauty to the garden but also support local native wildlife by providing food and habitat.
Another key consideration to make when choosing the perfect plants for your garden is whether they are drought-tolerant species. This is because, while Barbados receives ample rainfall, there are dry spells and extreme heat. As such, gardeners could opt for choices which require minimal irrigation like succulents such as aloe vera. These are usually considered perfect choices as they are low maintenance and, as they store water in their leaves and stems, they are better able to survive in our climate throughout dry spells. Planting zones in your garden is another significant way to ensure its appeal is unique. With shade-loving plants such as palm trees
40 May 2024
and sun-loving species like hibiscus, you can strategically place plants according to their light and moisture requirements and ultimately, create a visually appealing landscape that is both functional and beautiful.
Another unique factor in Bajan gardens is the presence of tropical fruits and herbs that not only provide fresh produce but also add texture, colour and fragrance to the space. From mangoes, ackees, dunks, papaya and banana trees, to herbs such as lemongrass, basil and thyme, you can create a beautiful yet sustainable garden.
No doubt choosing the perfect plants to fit your space and personal aesthetic can seem daunting; however, it does not have to be. With proper gardening practices and the incorporation of composting and rainwater harvesting, you can work in harmony with nature to create the garden of your dreams.
Above all, you should feel free to experiment and have fun while choosing the perfect plants for your garden. Take time to visit local nurseries and botanical gardens to discover new plant species and gather further ideas on what would be sustainable to plant in your space.
Creating the perfect garden with the perfect plants is what most call a labour of love. It requires patience, planning and a basic understanding of the environmental factors which could affect the growth and development of some plants. By choosing options which are beautiful yet can survive, your journey to transforming your outdoor space into a lush paradise is attainable.

HOW TO CLEAN AN AC UNIT
Summer months are soon approaching, and while they are considered the fun months of the year, the blazing heat of our island makes it difficult to get comfortable. Because of the warm nature of our climate, AC units have become a common commodity among many householders, with many investing to ensure that they beat the heat.
While AC units are easy to turn off and on, many find that cleaning the device is much more difficult than expected. If you have a unit and prefer to do the cleaning on your own, then this article is for you.
Take in the below tips on how to clean an AC unit:
• Step one is turning off the power before you start cleaning. You can make sure it is completely powered off by switching off the circuit breaker or unplugging the unit.
• Remove and clean the front cover. You can fill a spray bottle with slightly soapy water, then spray the front cover and use the cloth
to wipe it clean. Set the front cover aside to dry.
• Take time to first remove larger pieces of debris such as leaves or twigs. You can use a brush or vacuum cleaner to ensure that anything missed is cleared.
• The next step in the process is cleaning the air filter. Feel free to remove the air filter from the unit to either wash it with mild detergent water or simply vacuum it. However, if you choose to wash it, ensure that it is completely dry before reinserting it.
• Using a fin comb or soft brush, carefully clean the fins on the exterior of the unit. Make sure to be gentle as accidently bending them can result in obstructed air flow. If any fins become bent, use a fin comb or butter knife to carefully straighten them.
• If the evaporator coil is accessible, gently clean it with a soft brush and coil cleaner solution. It is critical to be gentle and careful to avoid damaging the coil or surrounding components.
• Inspect the drain line for any clogs or blockages. If any, use a vacuum to suction out any debris or a pipe cleaner to clear the blockage.
• If you are an amateur, inspecting components such as the insulation on refrigerant lines might be difficult. However, if you are adept, take the opportunity to replace any damaged or deteriorated insulation to ensure proper cooling efficiency.
• Once everything is clean and dry, reassemble the unit in the manual-directed order. Turn the power back on and test the unit to ensure that everything is running smoothly.
A clean AC unit is a healthy AC unit. And with the warmer temperatures quickly approaching, it is good to know you can retreat to the welcoming cool of an airconditioned indoors. With these above tips, you can ensure that you will be cool and comfortable while inhaling the freshest air from your clean AC unit.

THE ART OF THRIFTING
For years, thrifting has been a refreshing alternative to budgeters and mass-produced goods. While it was once seen as a niche activity, thrifting has now become a mainstream trend which is celebrated for its sustainability, affordability and the thrill of uncovering unique pieces. However, mastering the art of thrifting goes beyond simply browsing through racks of clothing and shelves; it is more about honing the techniques, having a keen eye for quality and knowing the right questions to ask.
The growing phenomenon of thrifting is not just about snagging a bargain, but more of a lifestyle choice embraced by people of all walks of life. From budget and eco-conscious individuals to vintage aficionados, thrifting usually offers something for everyone. With the thrill of finding one-of-a-kind items, there is no doubt that the satisfaction which comes from giving pre-loved items a new lease on life contributes greatly to thrifting’s growing popularity.
However, before diving headfirst into the first thrifting sale, as a beginner, you must
have a plan. So, make sure to first determine what you are looking for. Whether it is vintage clothing, household items or collectibles, having a specific focus will help to narrow down the search and avoid overspending simply because the costs are cheap. When thrifting, it is also important to inspect the items carefully. Since most items are previously used, it is critical to take that extra time to examine for quality and condition. Make sure to check for any signs of wear, damage or defects. For clothing, look for stains, missing buttons and holes. For furniture
44 May 2024
and household items, inspect properly for structural integrity and functionality.
The first question to ask should be
‘what is the history of the item?’
No person wants to make purchases and get home to realise they have spent money on an item which is not viable. So be patient. Many thrifters claim that the thrill of the hunt is a major part of the experience, so do not be too quick to make impulsive buys.
I know earlier in this article I mentioned having a plan. And while that is very important for those who are beginning to thrift, staying open-minded can also lead to unique finds. Do not be afraid to explore, as many of the best unexpected treasures are discovered when least expected.
According to serial thrifters, this activity is not just about acquiring material possessions but more about embracing a new lifestyle that values sustainability, individuality and
creativity. By choosing to thrift, you are not only reducing your environmental footprint by giving pre-loved items a new life but also supporting local communities and small businesses.
Before you start this new journey, you may ask, what are some of the best questions to ask before thrifting? The below highlights some key tips:
•The first question to ask should be ‘what is the history of the item?’ Understanding the age and provenance can provide valuable insights into its authenticity and value. You can also query where it was bought originally and the initial price.
•When dealing with items such as luxury brands, antiques and collectibles, a key question to ask is if it is genuine. Feel free to query authenticity by asking for
receipts or documentation which may have accompanied the item originally.
•Before purchasing, also ask about the condition of the item. If you are not viewing it in person, make sure to ask about any repairs or restoration work that may have been done, as this can affect its value.
Unleash your inner treasure hunter by taking up thrifting. This welcomed alternative offers a chance to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the past and the ability to discover the unexpected. With a range of options to choose which includes vintage fashion, home décor and furniture and rare collectibles, mastering the art of thrifting is both a skill and an adventure. Remember though, it is important to have a plan, ask the right questions and be patient. Who knows what treasures you might uncover?

foundation for the layers to come.
Layering the Bed
Begin the transformation by layering your bed with care. Start with a fitted sheet, ensuring it hugs the corners snugly for a tailored look. Add a flat sheet, tucking it neatly at the foot of the bed before folding it over the top, creating a crisp edge. Now, drape your duvet or comforter over the sheet, ensuring it’s evenly spread from edge to edge, inviting you to sink into its plush embrace.
Arranging Pillows
Pillows are the crowning jewels of your bed; arrange them with thoughtfulness and precision. Start by placing the largest pillows at the back, creating a supportive foundation for your slumber. Then, layer on sleeping pillows, followed by decorative and accent pillows for a touch of visual intrigue. Mix textures, patterns, and sizes to create a symphony of comfort and style.
Adding Finishing Touches
Elevate your bed from ordinary to extraordinary with the perfect finishing touches. Fold a throw blanket at the foot of the bed, adding texture and warmth while inviting you to snuggle up on colder nights. Then, strategically place a few decorative pillows or cushions to complement the bedding, adding a pop of colour or pattern that ties the ensemble together in perfect harmony.
To preserve the pristine look of your meticulously made bed, incorporate regular maintenance into your routine. Smooth out wrinkles and creases daily to uphold its polished appearance. Additionally, wash bedding regularly to keep it fresh and inviting. Opt for high-quality, easy-care fabrics that resist wrinkles and maintain their lustre wash after wash, simplifying the upkeep process while ensuring your bed remains a sanctuary of comfort and luxury.
