The face!
Tips
That’s the first thing they’ll notice when they see you this summer. If you haven’t already, make sure to upgrade your cosmetic bag with the addition of a bold, colourful, tropical palette. Every woman dreads that moment when their makeup starts melting during the summer months. Luckily, there are some simple steps you can take before, during and after you apply your makeup to keep it all perfectly in place. Summer is full of pleasures — but splotchy makeup, running eyeliner, and smudgy lipstick are not among them. Remember — Crop Over is more than good music and party vibes — it also serves as the ideal time to try out prints, colours, and bold looks that will photograph as stunningly as they’ll look up close (even hours after application). Any artist would attest that a flawless canvas is essential to producing beautiful artwork, and makeup artist Danni Woodall is no different. Here are her four Stylewise tips to beat the heat.
Start fresh Makeup melts not just because of heat and sweat, but because of oil. Your skin produces more oil in the summer months, so be sure to grab an oil-preventing cleanser and blot before you apply.
Foundation is key “Foundation colour is not something that women put enough time into, and I understand that it is quite daunting for some first timers when going into a make-up store.” However, Woodall believes that every woman should take the first step in looking for a foundation colour that suits her skin tone best. 6

How to get rid of acne
Tips for healthy skin I’m a statistic – part of the 80% of all 11 to 30 year olds affected by acne. So I decided to reach out to an expert with questions about skin care I’ve been dying to ask since my teenage years. I got in touch with Dr. Lesley Reece. She has six years of experience in aesthetic medicine, is on top of her game, and is young and fabulous! I hope you’ll find our conversation as useful as I did — from what not to eat, to the right products to use, to how to get rid of pesky acne scars.
Q: What’s the biggest myth about skincare? A: “You don’t need to wear sunscreen everyday.” Photographer: Jaryd Niles-Morris MUA: Danni Woodall
Keep essentials on hand Keep a makeup sponge in your bag so that you can smooth away any creases that may develop overtime. A compact powder to touch up is really essential. With the weather being at its most humid, your make-up will inevitably move a little bit. Also keep blotting papers with you for any oil that develops, and be sure to dab, not rub!
Pick what suits you best Woodall advises women to choose a make-up regimen that suits them and their lifestyle. “Never feel like you have to do a certain regimen because at the end of the day, you’re not going to do it.”
Each and every one of us, regardless of our skin complexion, needs to wear sunscreen daily. I cannot stress this enough. We are all at risk of developing skin cancers from harmful UV rays. So whether you are in sunlight for 15 minutes or 5 hours, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. Don’t like how it feels on your face or skin? There are loads of sunscreens on the market for every skin type, so shop around, find one you love and use it! Q: Acne. We all hate it. What can we do to avoid it? A: I recommend five basic tips. beauty
face Cleanse Wash acne-affected areas (face, chest, back, arms) twice daily. More often is unnecessary. Use a cleanser medicated with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.
Moisturize Cleansing strips the skin of oils and the skin’s natural response will be to replace those oils, thereby worsening oily skin. By using a moisturizer specific for your skin type (oily, dry, sensitive) you prevent overproduction of sebum and breakouts.
Remove make-up Make-up generally isn’t a problem, but make sure you use a make-up remover cloth before washing your face, to make sure you have no residue which can clog pores and cause breakouts.
Keep your hands out of your face Enough said.
Relax! Acne breakouts are associated with stress, so chill out :)
Q: Do we really need to see a doctor to have acne treated? A: Some of us do. If you notice that your acne is not improving after 2 to 4 weeks of using over-the-counter remedies and practicing proper skincare, it may be time to see your doctor. Resistant acne may be due to medical conditions such as hormonal imbalances, Cushing’s syndrome and polycystic ovarian syndrome, to name a few. These require specific treatments that can only be administered by a health professional. Q: Hoorah! Pimple’s gone. Now I’m left with all these horrible, annoying acne scars. Help me fix it! A: Some acne scars do improve and fade over time. But for those who prefer not to “wait and see” many options are available, including dermabrasion and laser resurfacing. These stimulate collagen production without damaging the skin’s surface, and must be done by a dermatologist. Less costly options include using skin products containing Kojic Acid, Vitamin C and/or arbutin. These help create a more even skin tone, which helps with those pesky scars.
Q: How important is water for great skin, really? Q: What should every girl be doing as a part of her skin care regimen? A: The skin is the largest organ in the body and just like all the other organs, its cells need water to properly function. Dehydrated skin tends to be dull, dry, and more prone to wrinkling. Also, water flushes toxins from the body, so not drinking enough of it leaves toxic build-up in all organs, including, yup you guessed it, the skin. Drink up! At least 8 glasses of 8 ounces each per day will make a huge difference.
8
A: Without a doubt, drinking water regularly and using sunscreen daily. Staying hydrated will ensure that skin maintains its normal plump turgor, so it looks more radiant. Using sunscreen daily not only protects from sun damage, but it also contributes to more even-toned skin, as well as less dark marks that usually result from irritations such as acne breakouts.

face Q: For great skin, what foods should I eat? A: If your goal is great skin, I recommend including these foods in your diet.
Avocado Vitamins C and E reduce skin inflammation and boosts skin vitality. Avocado oil also stimulates collagen production in the skin.

Vitamin C-rich foods Oranges, berries, tomatoes and Bajan cherries fight the free radicals that damage cells.
Salmon This fish contains acids which help combat acne inflammation. A similar effect is also seen with other cold water fish.
Too Much Alcohol Too much (more than 2 units per day if you’re female and more than 4 units per day if you’re male) dehydrates skin causing lines and wrinkles. Alcohol also causes flares in persons with rosacea.
Q: Which foods should I avoid?
Dairy Some persons experience more acne breakouts with consistent dairy use. Consider switching to soy milk, and as an alternative source of calcium and Vitamin D use green leafy vegetables.
A: For healthy skin, stay away from any foods packed with salt. These foods cause water retention which leaves puffiness, especially around the eye. This is not a good look.
Q: Any other tips for fabulous skin?

HAIR AFFAIR Hair: Car-ron Grazette MUA: Brandi Estwick Photographer: Jaryd Niles-Morris
Summer is hair
(cue laughter), and it’s a great time to experiment with some of the season’s hottest styles. Be ready to party, lime, entertain or make those trips to the beach with just a few Stylewise pointers. You can achieve and maintain fabulous hair, whether your choice is natural, coloured, weaved, braided, sister locks, cornrows, texturized, relaxed, body waved, short, medium or long - the universal golden rule is to hydrate, moisturize and nourish your hair. Introduce a valid maintenance program of regular shampooing and conditioning specifically designed to suit your hair needs. Visit a professional hair stylist for all chemical applications and frequent trims. Colour always adds a pop to the ordinary, so go for that sassy, fresh new look you have been considering since last summer, or jazz up your tired bob with layers or sharp angles. A great cut will last all summer and fall back into shape with ease and elegance.
Effortless high chignon Never have bad hair days again. A contemporary twist to the boring ponytail – the high chignon. First, prepare your hair by misting a flexible-hold hair spray on a flat brush and gliding it through your hair. To reach the bottom layers, spray the brush again, flip your head over, and brush the underside. Gather your hair into a ponytail at the very top of your head in the centre and spray the ends for control with a light holding spray. Twist the ponytail around the base, tuck the ends under, and slide in pins to hold. Finish with a light sheen. 12
Box braids How long can we go? As long as your imagination will allow. From pixie length to hip length, box braids are stunning when styled in a high chignon that is positioned slightly off centre on the crown. The braids fall with an air of modern sophistication, charm and a whole lot of fun. JULY 2014

What’s trending in beach wear It’s all about mix n’ matching this summer. Whether you’re soaking in some sun at the beach or feeling adventurous for a pool party or cruise, you are sure to turn heads by mixing textures and colours to create a unique look. Refresh last year’s bikini and mix the old with the new! If you’re not comfortable putting together different patterns, choose similar prints or go for complete contrasts, like a sequined bikini top and pastel bottom, as seen in the J. Angelique Regatta collection. Ladies, don’t forget to complement the look with a bold statement piece! 16
Cruise Style Whether the party is on land and sea! Here lies an opportune time to take your beach chic to the next level by tossing on a kimono, the ultimate transition piece. Kimonos are versatile – they can take you from a day at the beach, to casual dinners. Pair them with shorts, a mini boho skirt, or simply throw over a swimsuit. These convenient, yet fashionable pieces are available in a kaleidoscope of prints, fabrics and lengths, so have some fun with your wardrobe this summer.

There are tons of waterproof cases on the market such as OtterBox, that will survive a drop into the waves. Choose one of these to be sure your device is safe. If you want to save money, try a double-zippered plastic pouch like a Ziploc bag instead. Place your phone inside and zip until the opening is reduced to the size of the width of your pinky finger. Use this hole to squeeze all the air through before fully zipping the bag. You’ll still be able to use your phone through the plastic and it will be protected from any accidental spills or wet hands.
OtterBox keeps your device safe. KEEP IT CLEAN & SAND-FREE Our advice to you is to find a waterproof case that will keep the dirt and grime off your phone. Protective device cases—waterproof or otherwise—have plenty of crevasses where sand can sneak in and cause stuck buttons, scratched screens, and clogged headphone jacks. Rather than letting your phone chill at the bottom of your sandfilled beach bag, store it in its own plastic mesh pouch so you can shake the sand out of its surroundings. Travel with a plastic cuticle pusher to scoop any lingering grains out of harm’s way.
KEEP IT COOL All devices heat up a bit when in use, but leaving your phone in the sun for too long leads to overheating, which can kill your battery. Turn off all idle apps and only use your phone in the shade. Make sure you allow your devices to air out. That means don’t stack your smartphone on your friends’ phones. It’s important to give your devices some breathing room – inside and especially outside. Leaving them stacked in the sun is only going to conduct some serious heat and cause your battery to burn out. If you can’t stay out of the heat, keep a handheld, batterypowered fan from with you to cool down your phone in emergencies. In a pinch, don’t hesitate to pop it in your cooler for a few seconds if you need to. JULY 2014
