2 Happy Father’s Day! – These beautiful words are found in the Book of Sirach, chapter 3: In word and deed honor your father, that all blessings may come to you. (vs. 8) Kindness to a father will not be forgotten; It will serve as a sin offering – it will take lasting root. (vs.14) Today we honor our Fathers. May God bless them with good health, abiding faith, heartfelt compassion, and everlasting life – on this special day and always! Fr. Victor Farewell – As you know, Fr. Victor will be leaving our parish at the end of the month. He is pursuing further studies in Rome starting this summer. Our parish will bid “farewell” to Fr. Victor on Sunday, June 26th. He will be available in the Social Hall after the Masses so that you can offer him your good wishes as he begins this new phase in his ministry. Fr. Victor will be visiting our parish during his semester breaks and as his schedule allows. Words cannot express our heartfelt appreciation to Fr. Victor for his ministry and service to so many at Nativity. Buon viaggio! Buona fortuna! Know that you are always in our hearts and prayers. ~Fr. Tapp
(Vs. 14) Hoy honramos a nuestros padres. ~P. Tapp

In the spirit of the Jubilee “Year of Mercy”… Jubilee as defined within the context of our Church is based upon Holy Scripture: “For six years you may sow your field, and for six years prune your vineyard, gathering their produce, But during the seventh year the land shall have complete reset, a Sabbath for the Lord… (After 7 times of the 7th year of sabbatical), “This fiftieth year, you shall make sacred by proclaiming liberty in the land for all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you when every one of shall return to his own property, everyone to his own family estate (Lev 25: 4, 10). This text us leads us to understand that Jubilee is a “special time of remission of sins and universal pardon”, (Bill Huebsch, The Face of Mercy, Summary in Plain English). Have you discussed what Jubilee means with friends or family? Can you compare this effort by Pope Francis to other celebrations of reconciliation that you have had? Action: Plan for a dinner conversation with others on what “Jubilee” could be for you and for our Church. Discuss how our Church can and should extend mercy. How is the Holy Spirit inspiring you to extend mercy? Is there an area of your life that needs to be ‘liberated’; freed from unnecessary guilt, anger, resentment?

Thursday Evening Scripture Study
Parables of the Kingdom - Part I The Thursday Evening Scripture Study group will begin a study called Parables of the Kingdom - Part 1 on Thursday, June 23, 2016 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. The study group will meet for 11 weekly sessions and includes meeting other people seeking to grow closer to God through enjoyable and thought provoking discussions. Some of the most memorable teachings of Jesus were delivered as parables and are found in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke (the Synoptic Gospels). This study will begin with acquainting the participants with the important characteristics of a parable, and how they use images familiar to the audience and draw on common experiences that nevertheless challenge the audience to see things in a new way. This study begins where the disciples are a privileged audience to Jesus' private explanations of the parables. This study group meets in the Nativity Parish Adult Education Building (west side of the campus). There is a $15.00 fee for materials and video presentations. All adults are welcome to participate in this program. If you are interested in finding a relaxed and fun group that meets to grow in Faith, and to share in the growth of the Church community, consider joining us. If you have any questions please contact William at 813.752.9312 or call the Nativity Parish - Faith Formation Office at 813.689.9101
We’re Looking for Greeters
Nativity Parish is known for its warm hospitality. In order to further build up the spirit of hospitality in our church, we are looking for folks just like you to participate in our Greeter Ministry. Greeters arrive a few minutes early to church. They welcome all who come here to worship. They also help orient those who might be new to our parish community. This is an easy, but powerful ministry. We will have an informational meeting Monday, June 20 at 7:00pm at the Church Office. It is perfect for families to do together. Yet, it is also something that individuals can do as well. If you would like more information about serving in this ministry, please contact: Tim Bergevin 813.748.4146 or Cindy Ehringer 813.681.4608 our parish volunteer coordinator.

Whiteboard in a Bag Here’s a tool your child can use everywhere. Let them make a “whiteboard” by sliding white paper into a gallonsized zipper bag. Drop in washable markers and a small package of wipes. You might give your child words to spell or math problems to solve. Or have them draw and write about what they see out the car window. They can write on the sealed bag, use the wipes to erase, and start again.

Weekly Reflection (courtesy of catholicsteward.com) Zec 12: 10-11; 13: 1; Ps 63: 2-6, 8-9; Gal 3: 26-29; Lk 9: 18-24
Today, John the Baptist might be considered a political discontent. He was unhappy and openly opposed the rulers of the time. He was, of course, a harbinger of Jesus, and did much to anticipate the coming of the Messiah. However, because he was political in nature to a large degree, people expected Jesus to be equally political. That is why many thought Jesus would lead a revolution that would liberate them — that Jesus would become their new political king. We know, of course, that Jesus, too, was a revolutionary, but not the kind people expected. The Lord’s revolution was to be accomplished through love and service. That is a concept that is a challenge for us in a society where politics is so public and sometimes so noisy and angry. Our First Reading is from the Book of Zechariah. Of the prophets in the Old Testament, Zechariah is one of the most specific in term of identifying the time in that he was writing; his writings are clearly stated as having been written between 518-520 B.C., more than 500 years before the birth of Christ. The name “Zechariah” means, “God remembered.” Today’s reading includes two remarkable references and prophecies. Zechariah makes reference to “him whom they have pierced,” a clear and direct reference to Christ, and he also refers to a “fountain to purify from sin.” The connection to Baptism and thus to John the Baptist is quite obvious. It is only through God’s fountain that we can be cleansed. St. Paul continues the image of Baptism in his letter to the Galatians, our Second Reading. Paul says, “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” We tend to think of Baptism as being cleansed of sin, but it goes much deeper than that. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1213) describes Holy Baptism in this way: “It is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door that gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sins and reborn as the children of God; we become members of Christ; we are incorporated into the Church and made sharers of her mission.” There is more than cleansing here. We are also “members of Christ” as well as being “incorporated into the Church and made sharers of her mission.” Is that not what being a disciple of Christ is all about? Is that not a description of what is expected of us as stewards of our gifts, as stewards of the Church? It is in and through Christ that we find our identity. It is finding that identity that allows us to practice stewardship and to be the disciples the Lord wants us to be. We must view the Gospel from Luke in context. This Gospel passage is immediately after Jesus has fed the multitude. As was His custom, the Lord went off to be alone and to pray. His Apostles were with Him, however, and He suddenly poses the question to them, “Who do the crowds say that I

am?” We must keep in mind that they have just witnessed an incredible miracle. Nevertheless, they do share what they have heard from John the Baptist to Elijah (the prophet). Peter is known for not always saying the correct thing, but in this case he is completely accurate: “The Christ of God.” Jesus probably wanted to hear this answer, as He wanted His Apostles to understand Who He was. But He also wanted them to know what He must do, and throughout this part of the Bible He is preparing them for that — for His crucifixion and resurrection. At the same time, the Lord knows the people are not ready for this — that they could not possibly understand it — so He asks the Apostles not to share what they have come to know. Jesus’ closing remarks are important to us. He reminds us we must follow Him, and “take up the cross daily.” Carrying a cross in those days was a sign of death; it was a one-way street. What He is trying to get the Apostles and us to understand is that it is necessary. Just as St. Paul made reference to the fact that we must be “reborn” through Baptism and faith, Jesus is making the same point. We need change; we need conversion. Everything we do needs to put us in a position to emulate Jesus, to be willing to make sacrifices to be disciples.
