2 Hope for the Future – In the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the maitre’d at a restaurant says: “I weep for the future” when he faces Ferris and his friends. Maybe you’ve said something similar. But how blessed have we been these past few years to encounter and experience the dedication, deep faith, and generous spirit in our young people. I speak specifically of the wonderful ministry offered to us in the persons of Fr. Victor, Kyle Bell, and Alexis Redding. Their witness, their joy, their love for the Lord – often made visible while working long hours and for little pay – is a source of hope for our future. Fr. Victor, Kyle, and Alexis – you give me hope as I look to the future…and the Church you are forming through your minstry. More H.O.P.E. – Nativity Parish participates in a county wide ministry known as HOPE – Hillsborough Organization for Peace and Equality. Our congregation is one of 20 houses of worship in the county who are working to bring systemic change to the citizens who live here. Currently, we are working on an area known as Civil Citation – which will help our young people live full and productive lives as adults. Also, we are working with our County Commissioners to establish an Affordable Housing Trust Fund to help those struggling to find adequate housing throughout the county. If you want more information, check out http://hillshope.com or contact Fr. Tapp. Ministry Day – On Saturday, August 20th, all heads of ministries are asked to attend a leadership workshop. If you cannot attend, please ask someone from your ministry to attend in you place. The meeting will take place from 9 am till noon. Of course, you are welcome to attend the 8 am Mass followed by a continental breakfast. If you have not RSVP’d, please call Cindy Ehringer at the parish office.

Social Hall Kitchen Cleaning

Our Social Hall equipment went through a deep cleaning process a couple of weeks ago, so now it’s time to clean the rest… We are needing volunteers to come and help clean counters, storage cabinets, utensils, etc. Join us on Tuesday, August 2 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. It will be a fun time to help while “catching up” will fellow parishioners. If you would like to volunteer, please call Sherry Stewart at 813.625.3243 or just show up on Tuesday. Thank you for your help!

Retrouvaille

Sometimes things can go very wrong in a marriage. Retrouvaille is a program to help heal and support married couples experiencing difficulties, couples broken, lonely and hurting. It’s also for couples who have separated or divorced and want to try again. Our next program begins August 19-21, 2016. For more information and registration, call 813-906-7705. All calls and names held in strictest confidence. We invite you to visit our website at Retrouvaille.org.

World Youth Day

Please donate blood this Sunday

July 24th, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the Blood Mobile in the church parking lot. All donors will receive a wellness checkup including blood pressure, temperature, iron count and cholesterol screening. All blood types are always needed. If you give half an hour of your time and share your good health, a member of our community or perhaps a member of the church will be assured that blood and blood products will be ready when they are needed to save or prolong lives. On behalf of patients and their families, thank you for your lifesaving support.

Special Collection for School Supplies We will be having a special two week collection for back to school supplies for the students in need in our community. The Food Bank truck will be on campus the weekends of August 7th and 14th for this special collection, and again on August 21st for the regular food collection. Thank you for everything you do to support our Nativity Outreach ministries.

This week, Nativity sent 5 parishioners to Krakow, Poland for the World Youth Day. They started the pilgrimage with visits to different historic churches and religious places in Poland. World Youth Day commences on July 26th (Tuesday) with an Opening Mass with the Archbishop of Krakow, and concludes with an overnight vigil with Pope Francis on July 30th-31st (weekend) at Campus Misericordiae (Camp Mercy). Please keep them in your prayers. The group includes Olga Hriscko, Shawn Hriscko, Bridget Plimley, Josephina Brugalette and Adrian Opinion. They would be in our daily mass intentions and a candle would be lit for each of our pilgrims in the Chapel. They would also keep us posted through social media (#DOSPwyd) and through a daily WYD video blog on our website, nativitycatholicchurch.org.

Weekly Reflection

JULY 24TH, 2016 (courtesy of catholicsteward.com)

Gn 18: 20-23; Ps 138: 1-3. 6-8; Col 2: 12-14; Lk 11: 1-13

There is no question that prayer is at the heart of this week’s readings. We understand that prayer is foundational to our faith and the practice of it. Jesus, though the Son of God and One with the Father and the Holy Spirit, is referenced as praying consistently. How many times do passages in Holy Scripture open with a statement like that in today’s Gospel from St. Luke: “Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples’.” Prayer is what we consider to be one of the Four Pillars of Stewardship (along with hospitality, formation, and service). We may find it puzzling that Jesus prayed so often. First and foremost, He was setting an example for His followers and for us. Jesus’ human nature (He calls Himself often the Son of Man to remind all that He was human as well as God.) certainly sought solace and comfort from His Father God. In our First Reading from the Book of Genesis it is pointed out that Abraham came nearer to the Lord. One of the best ways for us to be with and to be near God is through prayer. Abraham understood that. As is the case in this reading about Sodom and Gomorrah, prayer is a two way street. We pray to God, but we must learn to listen to Him in return. Abraham’s prayer is answered in effect when the Lord replies that if He were to find even a small number of holy prayerful people in the cities He would not destroy them. Prayer indicates that we know Who God is. Prayer, however, is not passive, but it encourages us to be active. The famous quote from St. Augustine indicates the active nature of prayer. He said, “Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you.” St. Paul was aware that the Colossians were hearing many opinions as to what it meant to be a Christian and a follower of Christ. His letter to the Colossians, from where our Second Reading is drawn, addresses those issues. Paul emphasizes our oneness with the Lord and how we must strive for that. That is achieved in large part through prayer. It is through prayer that we come to the full realization of what the Lord has done for us. As Paul writes, “You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God.” Think of how often Jesus’ apostles and followers witnessed Him praying. There was most likely something about watching Him pray that made them want to learn to pray in the same way, a magnetism that was unique. Thus the appeal, “Lord, teach us to pray.” We need Jesus to teach us to pray as well. It is a fascinating aspect of prayer that even a young child can pray, but also the holiest people we may know or experience are still working at mastering prayer.

Pray for Each Other

Pray for the sick, suffering, and shut-ins to welcome the strength of God’s love, especially: Jeanne A. Woodke, Katalin Lazzara, Aida Luz Betancourt, Courtney Daniels, Leonora Maggio, Irma Barrett, Ed Nagel, Michael Fultz, Jo Ann Shey, Gary Curreri, Katie Welch, Hailey Hepfinger, Charles F. Barrett, Sharon Prunn, Pamela Johannssen, Leo & Diane Brubaker, Howard Wiebeld, Andree Avcalade, Tina Kulisz-Nelson, Deborah Kulisz-McClain, Cheyenne Downs, Rob Lavazza, Paula Francis Cotto, Sandra J. Joe LaPerna In your hands O Lord, we commend the souls of our recently departed. May their souls and the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. James Murphy, Pamela Johannssen

At no point in Scripture did the Lord say specifically “This is how you preach,” although He provided many examples of that. In Today’s Gospel, however, He says, in effect, “This is how you pray.” The key to that statement is that talking to others is important, but talking to God is the ultimate. Today’s Gospel includes what we call the Lord’s Prayer, the Our Father, a prayer that we may say more often as individuals and as a community than any other. The beauty of the Our Father is its simplicity and its succinctness. Prayer does not have to be complex or lengthy, but it does need to be direct and heartfelt. The Our Father is a powerful prayer put in simple terms. It is through prayer that we truly experience God. It is through prayer that we develop our close relationship with God. St. Charles Borromeo said, “We must pray before, during, and after everything we do. The prophet says, ‘I will pray, and then I will understand.’ This is the way we can easily overcome the countless difficulties we face day after day, which, after all, are part of our work. In prayer we find strength to bring Christ to birth in ourselves and in others.

Pastoral Care

Lighthouse Media Available

In one of his most focused talks to date, Stephen Ray discusses salvation, the authentic biblical understanding of being "born again", and how we are saved by faith, but not "faith alone". With great humor and doctrinal depth, he goes all the way back to Abraham to show that we are saved by faith and obedience to all that Christ demands of us.
