Redwood Stone is a second generation family business which has specialised in stone garden ornament for more than 35 years. Based in the small Cathedral City of Wells in the West of England, the company’s craftsmen draw on the local stone masonry traditions and skills to produce a cast stone which is almost identical to cut natural stone in every way but one – cost.

The Gothic Design is softer and more sympathetic in an English country garden than classical grandeur and our rustic finish, which conveys instant maturity, combines readily with timber, brick and informal plant material.
RECLAMATION STONE
We use the same authentic old stone finish of Pages 30 – 39 the Gothic Folly components to produce a collection of ornaments that could, and often do, turn up in Reclamation yards convincing enough to appear centuries old.
CLASSICAL STONEWORK
This finely produced cast natural stone has Pages 40 – 49 the sharpness of detail and the eye pleasing lines of the most prestigious examples of stone ornament over the ages. These pieces continue to improve with age and are the antiques of the future.
THE WEATHERED COLLECTION
The ever-increasing demand for aged Pages 50 – 53 examples of our classical stonework led us to develop a method of producing instantly aged pieces. These ornaments have the weather beaten texture and the appearance of natural patina normally the preserve of pieces destined for the auction houses.

introduction
the
gothic
Gardens need a focal point, a feature, a story. In recent years the pergola, the summerhouse and the rose arch have all played their part in fulfilling this role. Perhaps now it is the time for something new, to take a leaf from the garden design book of yesteryear: a temple, a pavilion, a folly!

introduction
The myriad of follies that sprung up in the great English gardens of the 18th century included many in the melancholy mediaeval or Gothic mood fostered by the romantic movement. Although the rich men who built them did not need to give reasons, there are few follies without at least one story to justify their existence, rationalisations sometimes arrived at by the local community for its own satisfaction - is this a latter day ‘mini-me’?
The Potting Shed
The Garden Façade
The folly is an eccentric structure taking on many forms, set either in a prominent position or in a secret area of the garden, that need serve no specific function except to impress, amaze or delight. Is this romantic scene purely for visual effect or does it screen the more functional compost heap, disguise a storage shed or simply serve as a divider - a feature?
Follies often take the form of ruins, probably inspired by the eighteenth century landscape painters…few of their pictures are without a ruin to stand as a melancholy reminder of the triumph of Time. These Gothic style castle ruins seem to satisfy a nostalgic yearning for the romance and chivalry of the past, while certainly providing an ‘eye-catcher’ or focal point.

It’s a little tricky to show this new feature on the printed page, but we use the latest 3D computer technology to bring design ideas to life – yours or ours. If the muse inspires you send us a scribble on the back of an envelope along with your number or email and we’ll work up the design together.
Framing a view
We are so grateful for the help we receive from our illustrious friends who have decorated our follies with beautiful planting; Hillier Nurseries, Robert Mattock Roses and John Wheatley.

natural stone The unique feature of Redwood Stone classical ornaments is that they contain natural Cotswold or Portland Stone thus avoiding the false colours created by the use of pigments or dyes. The crushed natural stone is used to produce a reconstructed stone with a fine honeycomb texture that is hand-finished to ensure an appearance as close as possible to that of cut natural stone.
