The GOTHIC FOLLY Architectural Specifications
Â
Our Story The name Redwood Stone is synonymous with the Gothic Folly. We designed and built our first example for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2001, becoming the first garden folly specialists for well over a century. Our follies can now be seen at shows and events worldwide as well as at our permanent London display, The Old Manor House Garden at Capel Manor, and in our very own show garden at the Stoneworks, Wells.
Components When we started designing the very first stone components for our Gothic Folly it was always uppermost in our minds to provide a comprehensive selection from which Folly designers could ‘pick and mix’ to create their own truly individual structure. These components have been designed to translate the classical grandeur of Gothic Architecture into a romantic garden feature. In order to create a trick of the eye we have reduced the scale of the 18th century landscape dreams to a size that will sit comfortably in a 21st century garden, though some of the larger pieces could easily be used in any Grand Design.
Made with our Hands Once each piece has been conceived and designed it is first hand carved in stone replicating the most important effects of ageing creating the look and texture of mediaeval time ravaged limestone. Moulds are taken from the finished original and the pieces hand made in these moulds are then given a unique hand weathered finish before awaiting their final home. This is far from being the end of the process as when a completed folly settles into your garden the textured surface of the stone encourages further weathering and the authenticity of the aged appearance keeps improving.

Weathered Finish
Of course the most vital ingredient of this piece of theatre in the garden is the authentic aged finish of our stone, ‘looking and smelling’ centuries old. To achieve this finish Steve, my good friend and collaborator, and I, spent days and weeks analysing the effects of hundreds of years of weathering on such beautiful examples of mediaeval masonry such as Wells Cathedral and Glastonbury Abbey as well as many other treasures - a study that continues to this day.
Standard Folly Designs Over the years we have dreamt up any number of standard folly designs which may fit with your ideas seamlessly or if not serve as a blueprint or inspiration as to what can be achieved. A selection of the designs are shown on the inside back cover of this leaflet.
Bespoke Folly Designs The world of 3D computer design makes everything so easy to visualise. From a small chat, an idea of dimensions, and a couple of photos of the intended site, we can produce 3D drawings of an initial idea which we can then ping back and forth by email working up your folly design with you until it is just so.
Contents In this leaflet we have used our 3D drawings of the various components to provide clarity and all dimensions, but also images of the real thing to keep reminding you of the lovely aged stone finish that we achieve.

The Standard Priory Door has 7 jambs per side. The Standard Manor House Door has 8 jambs per side. The number of jambs can be varied to achieve different heights, or individual jambs can be cut for complete accuracy.

Windows
Arrow Cross Window REC7026, outside and inside Arrow Loop Windows These ‘loophole’ windows are often found in fortified buildings, for defensive purposes, but also often just for show in buildings of a later period. The narrow opening would have been presented on the outside to limit the chances of attacking forces shooting arrows through to injure defenders, with the chamfered internal side offering a greater angle of fire for those inside.
