publisher’sletter Happy Anniversary to Us!

The inaugural issue of Natural Awakenings Miami/Florida Keys was published December of 2000—this year marks a milestone for our magazine. Today, the magazine has seen remarkable growth and change, to the informative and educational medium we present monthly. Falling outside the bounds of most traditional healthy living magazines, Natural Awakenings is fashioned around each community it publishes in – now over 100 markets, serving a community of over 4.2 million readers. The aims and scope of the magazine are much the same as the time of its founding in 1994 by Sharon Bruckman. Though they have, evolved somewhat Healthy Living—Healthy Planet are still our main focus. These include the latest natural approaches in nutrition, fitness, creative expression and sustainable living locally, nationally and internationally. Unlike our humble beginnings healthy lifestyles are moving up the consumers’ agenda and emerging food and beverage trends pointing to a growing health-conscious global community. “We rejoice that the wellness revolution I saw emerging all those years ago is now in full swing, propelled by the kind of people who read our magazines and website; and “benefiting both our readers and the world,” says Bruckman. “Our job is to keep our finger on the pulse of advancing thought in order to keep everyone apprised of the best healthy-life choices available to them.” Natural Awakenings has never set out to establish publishing traditions or to compete with other publications. Our goals have been to contribute towards overall global health; encouraging local and personal transformation. I believe that social change offers the strongest benefit. If we are to have continued success, we must work together while moving forward with the times. In that spirit this issue marks an important and reinforced goal to keep providing quality, informative and educational information. However, the magazine is not the only one affected. Personally, I’ve undergone a transformation of my own during my tenure. Besides getting older and a bit greyer, I’ve rediscovered myself and made a conscious shift through profound personal experiences, allowing me to see what is spiritually important to me. Synchronicity is what helps us know if we are on the right track or not. It offers an opportunity to test our choices. Joining this movement was the right choice. As I’m often quoted saying “This is not just a magazine, it’s a way of life.” I like to take this opportunity to thank my dedicated and talented team and that of our corporate office for all their hard work and support. To our faithful readers, it’s my pleasure to bring you each edition. Thank you for supporting us and Natural Awakenings on its mission to shape a wiser and healthier future. To our advertising patrons— many of which have been with us from day one — your businesses keep the wheels in motion, and we appreciate the opportunity to serve you by connecting you with a growing audience. Last, but certainly not least, I thank my family without whom, I would not have been able to undertake this incredible journey. Finally, let me share this last thought. Although we find ourselves in a difficult time in human history and there are many problems to overcome, we face a future filled with opportunities, creativity, possibilities and share a desired for peace and cooperation. As the many philosophers and masters that have come before us have said, together in faith, knowing our inner power to create, and an open heart, we can forge such a future.

Post-Hurricane Water Check-up

A

s we all continue to move on from the impact of Hurricane Irma, there is one important step in the aftermath clean up: your water filter. When a hurricane or any flooding has impacted your home, it also has impacted your drinking water. Bacteria and viruses compromise your home’s water. This makes the drinking water unsafe to consume, even after it has been processed through a water filter. All water filters need to be disinfected after a natural disaster like Hurricane Irma, even if you were not under a boil notice for your area. Carbon block filters and reverse osmosis filters (primarily used under kitchen sinks and refrigerators) need to be replaced with new filter cartridges. If you have a whole home multi-media filter, call your local specialist to have it regenerated and disinfected. Well systems need to be checked especially when they have been subject to flooding. Soriano: Artist as Mystic Exhibition

A

n unprecedented exhibit of Cuban exile and painter Rafael Soriano (1920–2015) life’s work will be on view at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU through January 28, 2018. Oral Health Prevents Thyroid Problems by Ali Villalobos

A

re you fatigued, irritable, experiencing unexplained weight gain or perhaps have thyroid issues? Have you considered this might be linked to your oral health? We often do not connect the health of our teeth as a strategy to prevent other systemic diseases. Poor oral health can result in many disorders, ranging from heart diseases, respiratory infection and pancreatic cancer to obesity and thyroid imbalances. In a holistic approach to medicine, doctors such as endocrinologists, acupuncturists, etc., are considering the oral health of their patients and referring them to us at GoNaturalDentistry.com. In my own health journey, I have developed an interest in understanding how everything connects. I have become fascinated with meridian channels and how they work within us— essentially meridian lines are energetic pathways that connect everything in the body. We are made out of molecules and cells that are affected by their surrounding energy; in order to be balanced we have to make sure these energetic pathways in our body are not interrupted or blocked. You may have unresolved dental problems that could be blocking a pathway and negatively affecting your health, including tooth abscesses, cracked or decayed teeth, root canals with sub-acute infections, gingivitis, gum infections, improperly extracted teeth with residual infections in the socket, amalgam fillings with mercury leaking into the body, dental materials that provoke sensitivities, defective dental restorations that irritate the teeth, gums or oral cavity. Dental problems are common but often unrecognized sources of imbalances in our thyroid health. The

thyroid—a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland that sits low on the front of the neck—stores and produces hormones that regulate vital body functions, including breathing, heart rate, central and peripheral nervous systems, body weight, muscle strength, menstrual cycles, body temperature, cholesterol levels and more.

Thyroid problems and hormonal imbalances will negatively affect every aspect of your life. Maybe you have a healthy lifestyle yet still have trouble maintaining a healthy weight. Perhaps you often feel irritable, fatigued, constipated or have irregular bowels, your hair is thinning, you’re missing periods.

In a holistic approach to medicine, doctors such as endocrinologists, acupuncturists, etc., are considering the oral health of their patients and referring them to us at GoNaturalDentistry.com. These symptoms are all connected to your thyroid health. It is important to identify and treat the underlying causes and one of those factors is your oral health. The toxicity in your body should be considered and addressed appropriately. A biological dentist will use dental materials compatible with your immune system by doing a simple blood test. This test will show what materials your immune system rejects because your blood will coagulate when exposed to the materials. Only the materials that are best for each patient will be used. Mercury amalgam fillings are never a good biological solution and the proper protocols and precautions need to be followed to protect your health. If you have any thyroid issues consider which teeth these are and if they are connected to your thyroid glands. See the chart to identify the teeth and those organs to which they connect. You deserve a healthy, balanced body and we are here to help you achieve that! Next month we will talk about the pineal gland. For more information on the meridian chart and holistic dentistry please visit GoNaturalDentistry.com. If you are interested in finding out more about how teeth affect health for yourself or your loved ones, call us at 954-938-4599.

Daily Detox with Bitter Greens and Bitter Herbs by Anna Perelli

E

very day we are exposed to a myriad of toxins that can wreak havoc on us if left unchecked. From pollution, pesticides and household/commercial chemicals to overindulging and being under stress, toxins in all forms can tax our bodies. When our detoxification pathways become less efficient and our liver overburdened, we feel tired, sluggish, irritable and out of balance. Participating in seasonal cleanses provides good quarterly maintenance and gives us the opportunity to hit our reset buttons. Beyond these tune-ups, the best way to support the body’s innate wisdom and ability to keep toxins in check is to incorporate daily habits that encourage consistent, optimal detoxing. This is where bitter herbs and bitter greens come in. These are superstar powerhouses for liver and digestive support, two of the main pathways our bodies use to help clear out toxins. Bitter herbs—such as milk thistle, dandelion, gentian, chamomile, peppermint and Oregon grape—have been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes, particularly to improve digestion, support the liver and counter inflammation. Regular use of bitters can help with food sensitivities, supports healthy skin and encourages proper digestive enzyme production; it helps relieve digestive symptoms such as gas, bloating and occasional heartburn. Incorporating just half a teaspoon of an herbal bitters blend before meals goes a long way in supporting liver and gallbladder health, enabling our bodies to clear out toxins efficiently. Making this a staple of daily mealtime ritual is a fun, easy way to promote daily gentle detoxing. Like bitter herbs, bitter greens such as kale, arugula, nettles, chard and dandelion, pack a powerful punch in the way of detox support. The dark, leafy, vitamin-rich bitter greens are exceptionally beneficial for digestion and promote natural detoxification of the liver, which regulates cholesterol, balances hormones, detoxifies the blood and metabolizes fats. Incorporating fresh bitter greens into smoothies, fresh juices, salads, pesto or tomato sauces, and soups are great ways to get a daily dose of the nutritional magic greens have to offer. Serve them lightly sautéed as a side dish. As a bonus, eating more greens will also help balance taste buds and reduce cravings. Detoxing doesn’t have to be intimidating or daunting. Simple, daily lifestyle choices help us help our bodies work at optimal levels. The basics of drinking plenty of purified water; exercising regularly; eating well most of the time; and choosing organic, chemical-free products whenever possible are important; incorporating bitter herbs and bitter greens into our diets can help us feel our best and become the lean, mean detoxing machines nature intended! Anna Perelli is a certified holistic health counselor and owner of the Centre for Natural Healing, an herbal apothecary. For more information on detox methods or bitter herb remedies, call 203-857-0202, visit CentreHealingCT.com.

igh-cacao dark chocolate contains high levels of flavanol, a compound known for its heart health benefits, but less is known about diluted foods such as milk chocolate candy. Harvard researchers followed 55,502 subjects for 13 years, comparing levels of high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease to lifestyle traits. They found those eating one to three servings of chocolate a month (including milk chocolate) displayed a 10 percent lower risk of irregular heartbeat than those eating an ounce or less a month. Eating one serving per week of chocolate yielded a 17 percent lower risk and two to six servings a week 20 percent, and then leveled off after eating one or more servings per day. “Eating excessive amounts of chocolate is not recommended, because many chocolate products are high in calories from sugar and fat, and could lead to weight gain and other metabolic problems, advises Elizabeth Mostofsky, author of the study.

esearchers from Northwestern University have found that acoustic stimulation using pink noise (random sound with more low frequencies than white noise) increases slow-wave brain activity, thus improving sleep-dependent memory retention. Thirteen mature adults completed two nights of sleep; one with the pink noise and one without, in random order. Specific brainwave activity increased during the periods when the pink noise was being delivered, suggesting that it could help older adults preserve some memory functions.

G

erman researchers studied the correlation between cardiac arrhythmia and alcohol consumption by monitoring 3,000 middle-aged volunteers for 16 days during Oktoberfest. Portable electrocardiographs and breathalyzer machines tested for heart activity and breath alcohol concentration. Arrhythmia showed up in 30 percent of the participants, significantly higher than an estimated 4 percent or less among the general population according to an earlier study. An irregular heartbeat often causes discomfort in the short term and possible heart failure and stroke later.

esearchers from the University of Oxford, in the UK, have found that infants that take more daytime naps tend to develop a larger vocabulary at an earlier age than their peers by examining sleeping patterns of 246 babies between the ages of 7 months and 3 years for 10 days. Parents also completed a language analysis at the start of the study and three and six months later to determine how many words each child understood from a list 416 words typically learned in infancy. Infants that napped more frequently during the day performed better on both understanding and expressing vocabulary than the others.

TAI CHI EASES THE BLUES

Boston researchers found a reduction in depressive symptoms among people that practice tai chi via 50 Chinese-Americans diagnosed with depression. They were divided into three groups. One group participated in tai chi sessions twice a week and were encouraged to practice the movements at home three times a week. Another group attended twice weekly depression education sessions and a third served as the control group. After 12 weeks, the tai chi group reported significant improvements in depression symptoms, which continued after the study was completed, measured at 24 weeks.

report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that 35 percent of U.S. adults don’t get adequate sleep. Dr. W. Chris Winter, of the Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine clinic, recommends we pick a wake-up time that works for every day and stick with it, regardless of bedtime; it pays off by eventually training the brain to fall asleep at the same time every night. Swedish scientists found that sleep loss reduces the presence of hormones that promote feelings of fullness in the stomach and increases the amounts of those that promote hunger, leading to obesity.

Regift or Recycle Smart Phones When replacing holiday purchases of smartphones and other electronic devices, don’t just trash the old ones. Manufacturing electronics consumes many resources and discarded waste can leak harmful chemicals into ecosystems. There are far better ways to redirect and repurpose them. Besides trading in phones for a rebate, another good option is transferring them to an official recycling program that makes sure all components are dealt with properly. Some states offer special provisions. Check the E-Cycling Central website at eiae.org. Major phone makers and carriers offer recycling programs, and some retailers accept select electronic devices. Best of all, give a device a new life by gifting it. RecyclingForCharities.com accepts obsolete personal electronic devices by mail; the donor selects a charity to receive the proceeds. ShelterAlliance.net, CellPhonesForSoldiers.com and Phones4Charity.org are kindred organizations. AmericanCellPhoneDrive.org lets users find nearby charity recycling initiatives via zip code. It provides scholarships for U.S. children that have lost a parent through warfare or terrorism, feeds malnourished children in Asia, builds lowincome housing and donates prepaid calling cards to military personnel. New Tech May Relieve Elder Isolation

Approximately a third of those older than 65 and half of elders at least 85 live alone, as do many people with illnesses and mental disorders. All can suffer from feelings of profound loneliness. Emerging virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies provide avenues to alleviate such isolation, instilling contentment, peace of mind, enrichment, fun, a sense of companionship and contributing to physical and mental health. Instead of passively watching TV, seniors can travel virtually to World Heritage sites, revisit old haunts or even attend family events they would otherwise miss. In terms of benefits attained, VR is predicted to measurably improve seniors’ quality of life. Healthcare applications of AI and telemedicine include reminders to eat, be active or take medications, perhaps assisted by a robotic companion that can share information with practitioners, children, caregivers and emergency personnel. Social applications include helping to form and maintain social connections. It may also serve as a personal concierge by reminding seniors of appointments, playing games with them and initiating dialogue to spark outward engagement.

Chimps, Zebrafish and Birds Communicate Like We Do Chimps, orangutans and bonobo apes are now known to be capable of understanding what others are thinking and recognize human thoughts, an ability once thought to be impossible. A team led by Christopher Krupenye, of Duke University, had apes take part in a visual experiment where they watched videos on a monitor while their gaze was being tracked. They discovered an anticipation of events that went beyond the visual cues presented. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has determined that zebrafish are social animals, similar to humans and other mammals— they form friendships, experience positive emotions and have individual personalities. The group advises people that eat fish or keep them as pets to consider the moral implications. Honey hunters in sub-Saharan Africa have a unique form of communication with honeyguide birds that fly ahead to point out beehives which the hunters raid, leaving wax for the birds to eat. A study in the journal Science reports that they listen for a specific call made by their human collaborators. Dr. Claire Spottiswoode, of the University of Cambridge, in England, and University of Cape Town, in South Africa, observes, “It seems to be a two-way conversation between our own species and a wild animal.” 18

Tree Tally

Digitalizing Data Helps Rainforest Census The Amazon rainforest is thought to harbor a greater diversity of trees than anywhere else on Earth, but the exact number has long been a mystery. In 2013, scientists estimated that the number of species was around 16,000, but no actual count had been done. In a new paper in Scientific Reports, researchers delved into museum collections from around the world to confirm the current number of tree species recorded in the Amazon and assess possibilities of those yet to be discovered. “Since 1900, between 50 and 200 new trees have been discovered in the Amazon every year,” notes Nigel Pitman, a Mellon senior conservation ecologist with the Field Museum. “Our analysis suggests that we won’t finish discovering new tree species there for three more centuries.” The study relied upon the digitization of museum collections data— photographs and digital records—of the specimens housed there and shared worldwide through aggregator sites like IDigBio.org. “It gives scientists a better sense of what’s actually growing in the Amazon Basin, aiding conservation efforts,” says Pitman.

New Options for Independent Co-Housing For 20 years, Maria Brenton, an outspoken proponent of older people living independently, has been campaigning and planning for the opening of a different kind of retirement home run by its residents, supporting each other through old age. She says, “Attitudes to older people in this country are out of date. Most members of the older population don’t wish to have everything done for them.” She attests that institutions and agencies dealing with older people encourage dependency and are patronizing and paternalistic. “Older people internalize it, and they learn to wait for people to do things for them,” advises Brenton. New Ground, in Barnet, North London, is the first UK cohousing development set up just for older women, with 26 women from age 50 to 87. Also in London, The Collective has created something similar with enhanced amenities such as a cinema room and a launderette with a disco ball. Microplastic Mess Threatens World Oceans Scientists from the University of Hull and the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have published research in the journal Science of the Total Environment showing levels of microplastics are five times higher in the Antarctic than previous estimates. Co-author Dr. Claire Waluda, a BAS biologist, says, “We have monitored the presence of large plastic items in Antarctica for more than 30 years. While we know that bigger pieces can be ingested by seabirds or cause entanglements in seals, the effects of microplastics on marine animals in the Southern Ocean are as yet unknown.” The tiny beads of plastic come from cosmetics or are shreddings from larger plastic items like clothing or bottles. According to United Nations sources, they may number as many as 51 trillion particles across the seafloor, throughout the oceans and on beaches worldwide. They are considered a serious threat to marine life in general. More international monitoring of the situation is needed, including a requirement for all polar research stations to provide waste treatment options.

PEACE ON EARTH Conflict Resolutions that Work to Bridge Divides Healing happens when we handle conflict in a healthy and transformative way.

Call to Action

Roughly 30 years ago, notable voices began urging Americans to embrace a sustainable worldview of unity in diversity, recognizing our core oneness as a solution to an increasingly out-of-balance society. Success in this endeavor depends primarily on the “habits of the heart” of our citizens, developed in local milieus of families, neighborhoods, classrooms, congregations, voluntary associations, workplaces and public places where strangers gather.

Activating Answers

While mainstream media often largely focuses on the negative aspects of conflict—discord, divisiveness, intolerance, violence, incivility, injustice, chaos and complex problems—a countermovement is convening constructive conversations. Participants are initiating dialogue and deliberations intended to resolve conflicts and create cohesiveness, collaboration, cooperation and compromise among local factions that disagree on how to deal with everything from health care and social justice to environmental protection and climate science. Educational training materials and books are giving outdated models of conflict resolution a facelift. In The Revolution Where You Live: Stories from a 12,000 Mile Journey Through a New America, Sarah Van Gelder devotes a chapter to a Greens20

boro, North Carolina, battle over a story about a deadly, racially charged incident from the city’s recent past. She quotes James Lamar Gibson, a 20-something AfricanAmerican activist and core organizer for the Counter Stories Project: “We’ve been stuck in an old conversation for a couple of decades. We want to have an army of people with restorative conversation skills, so we can get past the divisiveness and imagine together a different sort of Greensboro,” he says. The project began with facilitator training, and then developed story circles in which residents were able to have the difficult discussions that don’t ordinarily take place among the police, city council, churches and social agencies. Today’s conflict resolution experts are discovering that conflict is an essential and powerful call for applying spiritual principles and exercising spiritual practices.

Provocative Questions

“What if we considered conflict as a secret ally or a guidepost, showing us what really matters to us and how much we care? What if our intense emotions are sources of invincible energy, with the power to build the world we want, together? What does having conflict in a healthy and transformative way look like?” queries Ma’ikwe Ludwig, executive director of Commonomics USA,

an organization which educates and advocates for a world where a commons-based economy creates economic and ecological security for all. “Conflict has the power to bring to the surface what’s really at stake and to unite people toward a common goal,” advises Ludwig. Her thought-provoking questions can help shift perceptions toward the idea that we need to use conflict; maybe even welcome it. Ludwig, author of Together Resilient: Building Community in the Age of Climate Disruption, recently helped present new perspectives on conflict resolution during a webinar for Transition US members interested in creating inclusive and diverse communities through collaboration. The nonprofit inspires, encourages, supports and provides networking and training for grassroots initiatives seeking to build community resilience in the face of such challenges as oil spills, climate change and economic crises. Courtney Breese, managing director for the nonprofit National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation (NCDD) and her colleagues, together with thousands of innovative thinkers, are helping by introducing people to simple dialogue and deliberation structures, processes and resources that invite meaningful and productive conversations leading to constructive civic

engagement. Breese remarks, “We’re open to working with anyone interested in learning processes that can help bridge divides. We also like sharing stories about what is working.”

Toolbox

The group’s downloadable free tools help newcomers: A beginner’s guide for exploring dialogue (ncdd.org/rc/ beginners-guide); a how-to-guide for Conversation Café (CC) hosts (Tinyurl. com/ManualForConversationCafe); and the American Library Association Libraries Transforming Communities: Models for Change Project (ala.org/ ltc-models). “To date, we’ve had at least 800 librarians participate in free NCDD webinars,” Breese notes. CC is a simple tool useful in exploring difficult topics and provides a safe space to process different perspectives. “Initial agreement on basic rules includes suspending judgment while listening and seeking to understand others, refraining from persuading or converting and talking only from personal experience,” explains Breese.

One new network member, J. Scott Wagner, author of The Liberal’s Guide to Conservatives, speaks about the importance of using neutral language in dialogue. “I learned from him how words can be emotional triggers and signal one-sided perspectives, leaving some group members feeling angry or excluded because they feel the speaker won’t be open to hearing their perspective,” says Breese. After three tours of the U.S. and hundreds of interviews with conservative individuals, Wagner, founder of the nonprofit Reach the Right, was inspired to use his knowledge of five arenas—neurology/cognitive psychology, personality, bias, social conformity and morality—to help progressives understand conservatives that are not only their political leaders, but also their relatives, partners, friends and managers. He offers a simple explanation for anyone drenched in inaccurate biases. “We inherit unconscious genetic personality characteristics that lead us to develop our ideology, with which we construct our world and align with others that are in agreement. Differences in our personality characteristics are the culprits that create conflict.”

Community Needs Erase Enmity

Drawing on 25 years of experience of enabling sworn enemies to create peace in places such as South Africa, Northern Ireland and Colombia, Adam Kahane, author of Collaborating with the Enemy: How to Work with People You Don’t Agree with or Like or Trust, shares insights into the “enemyfying syndrome” that instigates conflict. This habit of thinking and acting as if people we are dealing with are our enemies and the cause of our problems is all around us and dominates the media. “The enemies are always the others, ‘those people’. Enemyfying, which feels exciting and satisfying— even righteous and heroic—usually obscures, rather than clarifies, the reality of the challenges we face. It amplifies conflicts, narrows the space for problem solving and creativity, and distracts us with unrealizable dreams of decisive victory from the real work we need to do,” observes Kahane.

Kahane sees the challenge of conflict becoming more acute. “People today are generally more free, individualistic and diverse, with stronger voices and less deference. Volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity are growing.” Yet, contrary to the common view, it is possible for people that hold contradictory positions to find ways to collaborate. That’s what he and 40 others representing military officers, guerrillas and paramilitaries; activists and politicians; businesspeople and trade unionists; landowners and farmers; and academics, journalists and young people, accomplished in the Destino Colombia project. They organized to contribute to ending their country’s 52-year civil war.

Jonathan Bender, founder of The Performance of Your Life, a public speaking and personal development business, has been on a lifelong quest of fostering personal growth and societal transformation. His therapeutic classes and workshops demonstrate how to connect, honor and deeply resonate with others, even if they have different worldviews, and how to listen and hear in the same way we want to be heard. Acknowledging the adrenalin rush that’s a common response to fear of conflict, Bender says, “When we learn to be mindful and speak from our entire body, rather than just from our head, we notice that the voice resonates and originates from a much bigger place. This teaches us to cultivate greater awareness of our emotions and how we express them. “Begin by acknowledging an emotion, and then reduce its intensity through slow, deep breaths, paying attention to the correlating physical sensation. Shifting our focus back to the heart allows us to recognize parts of ourselves in the stories of others and come to understand that our personal history is

the filter through which we ‘enemyfy’,” says Bender, who speaks and presents publicly, educating audiences and clients about the universally challenging performances of everyday life. According to Robert Atkinson, Ph.D., author of The Story of Our Time: From Duality to Interconnectedness to Oneness, today’s rugged individualism amid conflicts comprises a crisis of consciousness. “No longer can we settle only on seeing things in opposition to one another; we need to shift our consciousness to be able to see the parts coming together in a new whole. Accepting the oneness of humanity as a biological fact, a social necessity and a spiritual reality will lead us further along our journey toward lasting world peace.” His observation fits with what Joanna Macy, author and scholar of Buddhism and deep ecology, believes is the call of our time: “As planetary citizens, we are being called to wake up together.” Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings who blogs at LindaSechrist.com.

Motivated to Act

bookreview “I can’t stand your smoking! You are driving me crazy. You need to quit or I’m leaving!” Instead, using the 4 components of NVC, our compassionate communication might go like this:

An example of observation

without evaluation, judgement or criticism: “When I see you smoking”

An example of feelings:

The Language of Compassion A

powerful tool for peacefully resolving differences at personal, professional, and political levels, Dr. Marshall Rosenberg’s book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Compassion guides us to reframe how we express ourselves and hear others. Instead of “habitual, automatic reactions,” he writes, “our words become conscious responses based firmly on an awareness of what we are perceiving, feeling, and wanting. We are led to express ourselves with honesty and clarity, while simultaneously paying others a respectful and empathic attention.” While most of us will never have the opportunity to guide warring factions abroad, most certainly we can use the insights from Rosenberg to create a more peaceful and loving home environment. NVC aims to change our patterns of blaming, judging and criticizing others to focus instead on what is being observed, felt and needed. When we spotlight our own perceptions, we mitigate resistance, defensiveness and violence. Using the four components of NVC, we learn to see clearly our own behavior, rather than point the finger at someone else. They are: 1. Observation: the concrete actions you observe that affects your well-being; 2. Feelings: how you are feeling in relation to the observation; 3. Needs: accepting responsibility for what needs, values and desires creating your feelings; 4. Requests: concrete actions you request in order to enrich your life. One conditioned response to a situation might go like this:

“I feel scared that I could lose you too soon from a smokingrelated disease” Non-feeling words generally mean we are interpreting others such as: abandoned, ignored, attacked, betrayed, intimidated. Those are still pointing at what you think others are doing to you. This is not a feeling.

An example of needs:

“because I want to grow old with you and continue sharing this wonderful life.” Notice instead of pointing out what’s wrong with them, you talk about your needs. “The more directly we can connect our feelings to our needs, the easier it is for others to respond compassionately,” writes Rosenberg.

An example of a specific request:

“Would you be willing to look for different ways that might help you stop smoking?” It’s important that your request doesn’t sound like a demand, or that blame or punishment will follow if they don’t comply; your request is for a willing participant to eventually fulfill everyone’s needs. There are many more gems to be discovered in Rosenberg’s book including examples and exercises for compassionate communication, how to express anger, the cost of unexpressed feelings, and resolving internal conflicts, to name a few. While the work is not necessarily easy because it is a consciousness shift from the conditioned ways we express ourselves, it is worth the effort to allow compassion to blossom, enriching your life and those around you. The New Face of Sports Medicine by Marlaina Donato

oaches and athletes nationwide are attributing quicker recovery time, less inflammation and better focus to a whole body approach to health care. A nutrient-dense diet tailored to individual needs is at the heart of overall fitness. Like Venus Williams and Tom Brady, tennis and football superstars who prefer raw vegan and organic whole foods, respectively, many of today’s outstanding athletes choose to eat clean and incorporate mind-body practices.

Paralympic snowboard cross racer gold medalist, world champion and International Ski Federation para Nordic World Cup gold medalist Evan Strong, of Nevada City, California, was raised on an organic farm in Hawaii and continues to adopt many holistic practices. “I have a superfood smoothie every day. Liquid food helps me feel lighter and I have more usable energy for training,” says Strong. His regimen also includes organic produce, sprouted grains, occasional raw 24

goat milk products, homeopathic formulas and wildcrafted medicinal herbs. Strong credits achieving his personal best to a healthy lifestyle and recovery from an automobile accident that led to amputation of his lower left leg as a teen. “After the accident, my family and I opened a raw vegetarian restaurant. We produced as many cultured foods as possible—sauerkraut, kombucha and kefir. Improving my gut health gave me the biggest strides in healing. Yoga and meditation also contributed. It all saved me.” Six-time Ironman triathlete, U.S. Senior Olympic gold medalist and marathoner Ruth Heidrich, Ph.D., of Honolulu, attributes surviving stage IV breast cancer primarily to her low-fat vegan diet. Already an avid runner and nutritionally conscious, Heidrich was shocked to hear the diagnosis. “I was 47 years old when I was told the results of the biopsy. I thought I was going to die because of the symptoms I was experiencing,” recalls the 82-year-old, who not only beat multiple

Maintaining good habits while traveling can be challenging. Strong adds healthy salts to structure his drinking water and brings along superfoods such as green vegetable powders to use when he can’t access organic produce. To optimize his air quality while away from home, Strong uses a personalized air purifier that creates ozone. sweet that also supplies protein and fiber. To stay hydrated, I drink herbal teas, especially mint,” says Coughlin, who also incorporates a tart green smoothie every morning with kale, parsley, collards, celery, citrus and frozen pineapple. At home, “I like to be informed about where my meat comes from and how the conditions are for the animal. If I roast a chicken, I will use every part, including the bones, to make a stock,” she says. High Expectations

Even under the best of circumstances, professional athletes encounter difficulties, but when faced with enormous obstacles, the best can get even better. “I’ve faced injuries and illness during pivotal times in my life and career, but I always approached it with the intention to be proactive, rather than being reactive,” advises Coughlin. For Strong, confronting tragedy with the right attitude offers possibility. “Thirteen years ago, I was hit by a car and lost my leg, but now I see that moment as a blessing instead of a curse. It was a hardship that tested my limits, but in the end, it propelled me to achieving dreams I didn’t even know I had.” Nearly four decades after her grim diagnosis, Heidrich embodies hope for all of us when she says, “It is never too late to adopt a better way.”

Sing While We Work Nothing makes meal preparation tasks go faster than crooning along to our favorite carols. Express Feelings in a Healthy Way Family gatherings can sometimes test our boundaries and patience. Avoid repressing feelings by finding a way to speak a personal truth in the moment, in a calm and healthy fashion. It’s better than returning home stewing about what we wish we could or should have said.

12 Happy Holiday Tips 9

How to Really Enjoy the Season by Dianne Bischoff James

F

eelings of comfort and joy can seem elusive when the holiday to-do list looms or runs amok. The season can seem more like an endless burden than a parade of cheerful events and glad tidings. Amidst celebratory chaos, these simple rules will help restore inner peace and create greater happiness.

1

Eschew Perfection Guests are much more interested in filling their stomachs with great food than judging the scuff marks and wall dings. The perfection of the season is found in the special moments when families and friends sit down together.

2

Pay Attention to the Smiles The approaching holidays encourage more shared smiles, kind words and thoughtful gestures. While out and about, look for the grins and well wishes. Hold the door open for others and offer a friendly greeting to store clerks. We’ll find ourselves smiling even more, because thoughtfulness is contagious.

3

Do Nothing for 15 Minutes It’s amazing how refreshed we feel when we take a few minutes to sit in a comfortable chair and simply expe26

rience a moment of stillness. Inner quiet allows the mind to relax and reinvest energy in the body, so we can return to holiday activities with renewed zest.

Assign Roles to Household Helpers The holiday load is lighter when everyone pitches in. Assign specific roles to household members with clear responsibilities, from taking out the garbage to setting the table and washing up.

10

Leave Some Tasks for Later It’s unrealistic to think the house has to be in perfect order after festive gatherings. After guests leave, put the leftovers in the fridge and watch a movie. Cleanup will feel easier and faster after a good night’s rest.

4

11

5

12

Give Each Person a Special Gift Think of something thoughtful that both the giver and receiver enjoy doing together and write a promissory note for the shared experience, such as a free backrub, a day spent downtown, a personal manicure or a movie the other person wants to see.

Take Advantage of Extended Shopping Hours To avoid crowds and lines, schedule a late-night power-shopping trip. This is the easiest way to manage a department store visit with sanity, have easy access to the shelves and get immediate service.

6

Take a Holiday Binge Day Designate a day with no limits and no self-judgment. For anyone that mentally monitors their calories or sweets, claim a binge day out loud with permission for total holiday munching freedom. The next day, we can reinstate discipline.

www.namiami.com

Express Gratitude at the Table Loving feelings can never be expressed enough, so use the holiday as an opportunity to tell others how important they are to you. Create a heartfelt moment at the table by sharing at least one thing that you’re truly grateful for, and ask everyone else to do the same. Go Outside for Fun in Nature Hiking in a nearby forest preserve, skating, sledding or building a snow fort with the kids not only burns energy, but is emotionally exhilarating for the whole family. Pick an outdoor activity, don appropriate togs, and share in the laughter and serenity of a sparkling winter day. J INSPIRED LIVING A Five Ways to Make the New Year Sparkle

N

by Kelly Martinsen

Just Do It – The Nike slogan has never been more appropriate. We all have something we’ve thought about doing or trying. Whether traveling to a new location, trying a different sport, joining a new-to-us group or club, or making more friends, don’t put it off— just do it. Defeat allodoxaphobia – It’s the fear of others’ negative opinions. Everyone suffers from this to some extent, and it can hinder us from living our best life. Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt remarked, “You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do.” Volunteer – A common excuse for not volunteering is, “I don’t have the time.” Next year, make the time. When

researchers at the London School of Economics examined the relationship between volunteering and happiness in a large group of American adults, they found that the more people volunteered, the happier they were.

F E B

Journal – People often journal as a way to reflect upon their lives. This can be helpfully revealing, but rather than looking back, look forward, using a journal as a blueprint to manifest the most inspired year yet. Write out plans and dreams with the steps needed to achieve them. Gratitude – This is the big one. One way to be and stay inspired is by starting off each day in a state of gratitude. Every morning before getting out of bed, think of at least three things to be grateful for. By doing this, we recognize the blessings we have and greet the day in a positive frame of mind. It’s a perfect way to end each day, too. When someone routinely inquires, “How are you?” answer, “I am grateful.” Our time on Earth is not infinite. With only so many days promised, let’s vow to live them inspired.

nspiration may strike anywhere, at any time. The trick is nurturing the process to appear on demand when we need it most. Often, an inspiration is sparked when we perceive someone being selfless, courageous, physically extraordinary or deliciously creative. However, we don’t need to wait for outside stimulus when we can discover internal stirrings by invoking any of these self-inspiring tips.

inter citrus fruits that arrive in a gift basket or show up on sale at the grocer present a welcome bright spot on winter’s darker days. Valencia and blood oranges, limes and Meyer lemons are delicious in their own right, and deserve their place on the breakfast table. Yet there are many other intriguing ways to enjoy them in vinaigrettes, salads, main dishes, baked goods and desserts. Winter citrus is full of health benefits, just when we need them most: during the busy holiday season. To start, they help bolster our immune system, guarding against colds or helping us recover faster. Their high vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, content is water soluble. According to a comprehensive study by the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, a daily intake of 400 milligrams of vitamin C can halve the incidence of colds in adults and cut their duration by 14 percent.

The flavonoid hesperidin in citrus helps boost “good” HDL cholesterol and lowers “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, report researchers in the Journal of Nutrition. In a new study in Nutritional Neuroscience, hesperidin in citrus also was found to ameliorate brain deterioration found in Alzheimer’s patients. Other studies further show that the grapefruit diet wasn’t wrong; eating half a fresh grapefruit before each meal can help us lose weight. In a study conducted at the Scripps Clinic, in La Jolla, California, and published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, researchers put overweight volunteers on an exercise plan for 12 weeks and asked them to eat either half a fresh grapefruit or drink apple juice and pop a placebo pill before each meal. The grapefruit group dropped an average of three-and-a-half pounds, compared to only one-half pound for the apple group.

Limonoids, an antioxidant found in most citrus, may help guard against stomach, lung, breast and skin cancer, according to the U.S. Agricultural Research Service. Animal and human cell studies found that limonoids—especially those in fresh oranges—harbor potential as anticancer compounds. Another study in Nutritional Neuroscience showed that the volatile compound limonene, found in the rind of a lemon, can enhance memory. As nights grow colder and longer, winter citrus “adds a little sunshine to every meal,” says Jamie Schler, author of the recently released cookbook Orange Appeal: Savory & Sweet. Schler grew up in Florida, surrounded by citrus groves between the Atlantic Coast and Indian River. “Winters meant Dad’s workbench in the garage groaning under the weight of brown paper grocery bags filled to bursting with navels, tangerines, grapefruits, Valencias and tangelos,” writes Schler. “I fondly recall trips in the old green station wagon to the groves on chilly weekend mornings where we could pick them ourselves.” Today, Schler and her husband own and operate the boutique Hotel Diderot, in Chinon, France, where life’s a feast—especially during citrus season. Baby Vegetables and Microgreens with Charry Lime Vinaigrette

Yields: 4 servings Charry Lime Vinaigrette: Zest of 2 limes Juice from the grilled limes 1 Tbsp seasoned rice wine vinegar 1 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp sorghum or maple syrup ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper Vegetables: 4 oz baby radishes 4 oz baby carrots, with some of the green top 4 oz baby leeks, trimmed 4 oz baby yellow pattypan squash 2 oz microgreens Prepare a medium-hot fire in the grill. Brush the radishes, carrots and leeks with olive oil and place in a grilling basket or on a perforated grill rack. Grill for 4 to 5 minutes, turning often, until the vegetables have just started to brown at the edges. Zest the limes and set the zest aside. Halve the limes and grill, cut sides down, for 1 to 2 minutes or until they have good grill marks; adds a smoky, caramelized flavor. For the Charry Lime Vinaigrette, squeeze the juice of the grilled lime halves into a bowl. Whisk in the reserved lime zest, rice wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, sorghum and olive oil together until well blended. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Arrange the vegetables on salad plates and garnish with microgreens. Spoon the vinaigrette over all and serve.

Gluten-Free Turkey Meatballs Yields: 23 small meatballs 2 cups cooked short brown rice 1 medium onion, small chop (about 1 cup) 4-5 garlic cloves, minced 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp ground oregano 1 tsp ground thyme 1 tsp ground basil 2 tsp sea salt ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper 2 medium carrots, peeled and grated 1 large egg and 1 large egg white ¼ cup Italian Parmesan cheese, grated 1/2 cup Italian flat-leaf parsley, small chop 1 lb hormone-free ground turkey breast (can do a combo of half white meat and half dark) Preheat oven to 350° F. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper. Sauté the onion in 1 Tbsp olive oil until soft and golden. Make a well in middle and add 1 Tbsp oil and add garlic in center. Wait 1 minute until getting crisp. Then stir to blend. Add the spices, salt and pepper. Then stir, and cook 1 minute more. In a large bowl, whisk the egg and egg white. Add the carrots, cheese, rice, parsley and blend very well to combine. Add the turkey and blend well. Don’t overmix. Using a very full tablespoon or small scooper, drop balls on parchment paper. Then roll each with your hand to get a uniformed meatball. I keep a small bowl of water next to the baking sheet and dip my fingers in it before rolling (you can dip in oil). Bake 15 minutes. Then carefully turn for 10 minutes, or until a bit crispy. Then cool. Directions for making brown rice: 1 cup rice to 2 cups water. Bring rice to a rolling boil, then lower. Simmer for 40 minutes. 1 cup will yield more than you need in this recipe, so save the rest for soup, veggie burgers, morning eggs, or even in your tossed salad.

Note: To “veganize” your recipe, use a vegan-style grated cheese. For the eggs, whisk together 1 Tbsp flaxseed meal with 3 Tbsp warm water. Place in fridge for 1 minute to thicken. Then use in this above recipe instead of the eggs. This works great in other recipes too!

Not all Vegan or Plant-Based Diets Are Equally Healthy by Hena Patel, M.D., and Kim Allan Williams Sr., M.D.

M

ove over low-fat diets. More and more experts are recommending plant-based diets to reduce the risk of heart disease and other chronic conditions such as diabetes and cancer. But are all plant-based diets equally beneficial? And must they be all-or-none eating strategies, or is there a role for a semi-vegetarian or “flexitarian” approach? The term plant-based diet often conjures up images of vegetarian or vegan fare. But it really means a diet that emphasizes foods from plants—vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, seeds, and the like—not one that necessarily excludes non-plant foods. The results of studies on the health effects of plant-based diets have varied widely, largely due to how these diets were defined. Some focused on vegetarian or vegan eating habits, while others included some foods from animals. Notably, these studies tended to treat all plant foods equally, even though eating certain foods from plants, such as refined grains and sugar-sweetened beverages, is associated with a higher risk of developing diabetes or having a heart attack or stroke, while eating whole grains and produce are associated with lower risks. That’s why we were so interested to see the results of a recently published study performed by researchers at the

32

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

www.namiami.com

Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Led by Ambika Satija, the team catalogued the diets of nearly 210,000 nurses and other health professionals based on their answers to food frequency questionnaires every two years for an average of 23 years. From these data, the researchers defined three versions of a plant-based diet: an overall plant-based diet that emphasizes the consumption of all plant foods and reduced the intake of animal foods; a healthful plant-based diet that emphasizes the intake of healthy whole grains, fruits and vegetables; and an unhealthful plant-based diet that emphasizes the intake of less-healthy plant foods, such as refined grains. In addition to detailing their food choices, the study participants also recorded other lifestyle choices, health behaviors, and their medical histories. Over the course of the study, 8,631 participants developed coronary heart disease, which the researchers defined as a nonfatal heart attack or dying of heart disease. Those that followed an overall plant-based diet were slightly less likely (an 8 percent reduction) to have developed coronary heart disease than those that didn’t. But here’s where things get interesting. Those that followed a healthful plant-based diet had a substantial 25 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease, while those that followed an unhealthful plant-based diet had a substantial 32

percent increased risk. This study is certainly not the last word on the subject. As an observational study, it can’t prove cause and effect like a randomized trial can. And the diet data came from self-reports, which aren’t always accurate at measuring an individual’s diet. However, these diet assessments were validated against multiple-week diet records and biomarkers. Overall, this work adds to the substantial evidence that a predominately plant-based diet reduces the risk of developing heart disease. It has two important take-home messages. One is that a plant-based diet is good for long-term health. The other is that not all plant-based diets are equally healthy. The kind that deserves to be highlighted in dietary recommendations is rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and unsaturated fats, and contains minimal animal protein, refined carbohydrates, and harmful saturated and trans fats. In practice, this translates into eating mostly vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and soy products in their natural forms; sufficient “good fats,” such as those in fish or flaxseeds, nuts, and other seeds; very few simple and refined carbohydrates; and little or no red meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy. It also means choosing quality over quantity. For anyone following a traditional American diet, heavy on the meat, it’s easier to make a change by starting with small dietary tweaks instead of embracing a precipitous shift to a vegetarian or vegan diet. Try the elimination game: Cut out red meat from your diet, then, after a couple weeks, eliminate other types of meat; and then do the same with dairy foods and eggs. Or try the Meatless Monday approach—don’t eat meat on Monday—then gradually add more meatless days each week. No matter what approach you take to cutting out foods, try to add one or more new plant-based recipes to your cooking repertoire every week. What you stand to gain is so much more than what you would give up. Hena Patel, M.D., is a cardiology fellow and Kim Allan Williams Sr., M.D., is chief of the division of cardiology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Williams will be speaking at The Real Truth About Health Conference, which will be held Feb. 2-11, 2018, at the Long Island Hilton, in Melville (RealTruthTalks. com).

How do children benefit from conscious or awakened parenting?

AWAKE PARENTING Raising Connected, Confident Kids by Judith Fertig

O

ne of the greatest challenges parents face is connecting with their children in deep and meaningful ways. The aim of awakened families is to raise strong and emotionally resilient children. Parenting expert and clinical psychologist Shefali Tsabary, Ph.D., author of The Conscious Parent: Transforming Ourselves, Empowering Our Children and The Awakened Family: A Revolution in Parenting, offers mindful approaches to benefit the family—and the community. Via her practice in New York City, appearances on Oprah and online courses, Tsabary provides awareness, skills and strategies to revolutionize families. She posts videos and blogs at DrShefali.com.

How do parents know if they’re on the right track? To be awakened or conscious means to realize that we carry emotional baggage and conditioning from childhood that affects our relationship with our children. Our old ways of thinking and 34

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

being from our own childhood shape the manner in which we react and interact today. Awakened parents are constantly evolving into their truest and most authentic selves. When parents undertake a daily practice of mindfulness and awareness, they begin to extricate themselves from blind reactivity to see how every problem with their children is a call to their own awakening. Parents will know they are on the right track because they will connect more with their children, empowering them to think and live autonomously—separate from a parent’s fantasies and expectations.

How can each family member connect with their true self? Parents need to understand that the path to creating a connected relationship with their children is to first create one with themselves. Realizing this, they consider their own inner growth a high priority. Children need to learn who they are and what they really enjoy. Parents

www.namiami.com

Conscious parenting mandates that we place the task of connecting with our children front and center, especially before correcting them. Admonishing and punishing them becomes secondary to the main imperative of conscious connection. It’s crucial we realize we aren’t raising a “mini-me”, but a spirit throbbing with its own signature. Thus, it’s vital to separate in our mind who we are from who each child is. Children aren’t ours to possess or own in any way. When we know this in the depths of our soul, we tailor their raising to their needs, rather than molding them to fit our needs. Children raised in this way grow up to be fearless and infinitely resilient, knowing that their purpose in life is to live in their most authentic and true way. Conflicts decrease and conscious, connected communication increases.

What can parents do when they fall back into old patterns, shaming children or doing other things that create distance?

When this happens, parents need to sit with themselves and look deeply within, asking: “What is it about me that feels the need to deride, scorn and shame my children?” In such introspection, they might discover triggers from old wounds that have nothing to do with a child’s behavior. When they can see the internal link, they can begin to make the transformations they need. As a parent, I have learned that my role is to step aside, stay in infinite possibility, heal my own wounds, fill my own bucket and let my child fly.

How can closer, awakened families co-create a better world via the ripple effect?

When children grow up feeling con-

se it up, wear it out, make do or do without,” was the motto of past generations. Today, it’s recycle, repurpose and reinvent. Nostalgia is making a comeback. It’s tempting to revert to successful old-fashioned ways; it’s even better to update the how-to of natural eco-living.

Preserve Food “There are tradeoffs between convenience and environmental impact,” says Kathleen Hanover, executive creative director at Imagine That Creative Marketing Services, in Dayton, Ohio. “I’d love to freeze all of our family’s produce, but after two power outages, I can veggies, too. Steam canners for jams, jellies, tomatoes and high-acid foods use three inches of water and 10 minutes of energy.” Shel Horowitz, a consultant for Green and Profitable and co-author of Guerrilla Marketing to Heal the World, joined a food co-op in the 1970s. Today, it has 9,000 members. “I dehydrate 36

veggies for soup, pasta, stir-fry dishes or as tomato or zucchini chips,” he says. “Onions, shallots, garlic, leeks, celery, kale, hot peppers, tomatillos and fruit were successful; eggplant, cucumbers and rhubarb were not.”

Use It All The Traditional Line menu devised by executive chef Mark Russell, of Great Performances, a sustainability-oriented high-end catering and food service company in New York City, remarks, “Food trends have changed,” noting preserving, freezing, pickling and canning remain sound. He salutes thrifty Depression-era practices. “My grandparents picked dandelion greens to fry in bacon fat,” he says. “A salad with olive oil and fresh tomato is healthier.” Fermented grape leaves can be rolled up into dolmas filled with local grains and feta cheese instead of meat. He also blanches and freezes cauliflower leaves, warmed in butter to serve; he’s then used the whole vegetable.

Containers ease gardening, especially for tomatoes. Hanover repurposes plastic cat litter buckets. “They’re sturdy and hold up in cold weather,” she says. “Alpaca poop fertilizer supplied by a neighbor doesn’t smell and plants thrive.” Ocala, Florida, reiki master and teacher Debi Goldben employs nature’s bounty at home. “Downspouts collect rainwater for the garden, and it’s much better than chemically treated city water,” she says. Some municipalities, including in Colorado, regulate rainwater collection, mandating the size and number of barrels per property “for outdoor use only”.

Sew Up Repairs Anca Gooje, owner of Chid Kala, a natural ingredient lotion maker in Scarborough, Maine, uses colorful patches to repair tears and update the look of her two children’s clothing. She also recompressed their sofa’s inner springs to their original shape by encasing them in fabric. “It was timeconsuming, but only cost a few dollars for fabric,” she relates. “Updating avoided creating more landfill. For a fresh look, I made a new cover.”

Multipurpose a Cook Pot “My mother believed pressure cookers would explode, so I bought an Instant Pot and changed the way I cook,” says Sue Ann Jaffarian, a Los Angeles paralegal and mystery writer. “I have a demanding day job and writing deadlines. I toss in healthy ingredients and have a simple homemade meal, often vegan, in a minute. Soup, stew, risotto, pasta, chili, pudding, brown rice and oatmeal work well. It doesn’t heat up the kitchen, either.”

The Instant Pot works like a crock pot, pressure cooker, steamer, sauté pan, warming pot, rice cooker and yogurt maker, replacing seven appliances.

Employ Onsite Power “My Hadley, Massachusetts, farmhouse, built in 1743, might be the oldest solar home in the country,” muses Horowitz. “Our farmer neighbors have a methane digester to turn cow poop and restaurant waste into electricity and heat. We’ll hook up to it to replace heating oil.”

PETS ¤ MUSIC Each Species Grooves to Its Own Beat by Sandra Murphy

ust as dogs’ and cats’ noses are more efficient than ours, they also have better hearing, reacting to a broader and higher range of frequencies and vibrations. “We sense our world from where our ears are. Our plane is generally five to six feet high; animals closer to the ground hear things differently,” says Janet Marlow, founder and CEO of Pet Acoustics, in Washington Depot, Connecticut. The internationally renowned musician, composer and sound behaviorist has invented species-specific music based on her 30 years of research. Humans hear up to 23,000 Hertz (Hz), which differs substantially from that of many other creatures (lsu.edu/deafness/ HearingRange.html). A Hertz is a standard unit of frequency set at one cycle per second.

He could tell by the way animals walked that they were keeping time to some kind of music. Maybe it was the song in their own hearts that they walked to. ~Laura Adams Armer

Horses Hear Up to 33,500 Hz Marlow found that horses prefer rhythmic pieces matching their natural movements. “When a Tennessee walking horse breeder played music during a birth, the foal and mother recovered faster than usual.” After that, “The horses ran to the barn upon hearing the same music.” Sally Morgan, a physical therapist and advanced certified Tellington TTouch practitioner in Northampton, Massachusetts, who has enjoyed freestyle performance riding, says, “I liked to play our songs in the barn. Five CD players can keep horses relaxed most 38

of the day. They don’t like countrywestern music; it’s often sad and in the wrong cadence. Classical music like Bach is calming. When I played Pachelbel’s Canon in D on my flute, my Morgan gelding, Ten Penny Moonshine, listened for hours.”

Rabbits Hear Up to 42,000 Hz “Rescued rabbits like long tones, common in music accompanying yoga or reiki,” Morgan relates. “Long tones hold a chord with layers of notes on top.”

Dogs Hear Up to 45,000 Hz “People hear in stereo, animals in mono,” says Marlow. It’s why dogs tilt their heads left to right—to allow more sound waves into their ears—collecting information from various angles. Sound frequency and intensity keeps an animal alive in nature; they learn to flee in another direction, not analyze. Separation anxiety is often due to a sound the dog doesn’t recognize, Marlow explains. Sound triggers behavior, whether good or bad, as dogs relax or are stressed. Music releases tension from their being ever-vigilant as seen in their posture. To understand what a dog hears, sit or crawl on the floor. Electronic speakers are usually positioned at heights conducive for our ears, not theirs. “For the holidays, my dogs and horses like We Three Kings, The Holly and the Ivy and especially Greensleeves for their baroque roots and repeating patterns,” notes Morgan.

Cats Hear Up to 64,000 Hz Marlow credits her cat, Osborn, with inspiring her interest in music for animals. When Osborn was injured, she visited the veterinary hospital and sang to him to keep him calm. Her home state’s Litchfield Veterinary Hospital became her initial testing ground for species-specific music. “We use Pet Acoustics music boxes in the cat ward, recovery rooms and exam rooms,” says Heather Florkowski, a certified technician at

FOSTER: Are you willing to provide a temporary home to one of our dogs?

Aquarium Fish Hear Up to 3,000 Hz “Fish are frantic animals that must always anticipate their next meal,” says Sam Williamson, a former marine biologist in Edinburgh, Scotland. “When I started playing classical music at feeding time, I noticed my three betas became calmer. A piece by Benjamin Britten, started two minutes before feeding, led to them expect food only when the music played.”

DONATE: All funds donated to RRPAD go directly to providing food, shelter and medical treatment to our animals.

Domesticated Birds Hear Up to 8,500 Hz

VOLUNTEER: Volunteers make an enormous contribution to the success of our project, and we always welcome dedicated volunteers.

In the wild, birds are part of a flock. At home, they’re often solitary. “Birds are the most musical and communicative of all animals,” remarks Marlow. “Without companionship, birds can get neurotic and pull their feathers out. Provide a sense of the outdoors by including nature sounds in played music.” “Animals need us to be aware of their hearing,” Marlow advises. “Holistic pet people have addressed improved diet and medical procedures. Understanding how music supports their well-being also enables us to better care for them.” Connect with Sandra Murphy at StLouisFreelanceWriter@mindspring.com.

the facility. “In our experience, stress inhibits the healing process. Like people, animals are anxious when ill and visiting the doctor’s office. Music helps ease their stress. At home, when I move the music box to another room, my dog follows it.” “During a TTouch session, cats are completely relaxed when I play New Age music for them,” says Morgan. “Pick music that fits the cat’s personality. You can tell what they like from their body language; it’s not always what you’d expect.”

dead skin cells without disturbing the skin’s protective barrier. There are safe and effective machine treatments that reduce the signs of aging and correct imperfections. Of course, expectations need to be realistic with natural procedures, since results appear gradually as the skin becomes healthier and more resilient. Regular maintenance with facials, face massage and non-invasive machines will reward you. Many of my clients stopped using fillers or Botox because they noticed a positive change on their face as skin became firmer, wrinkles were smoother and skin tones looked more even.

eauty throughout history has been an intense focus for so many. In ancient Greece, for example, history shows that body oils were very important to the Egyptians. Women used olive oil after pregnancy to eliminate stretch marks, men also benefited from extensive skin care treatments to protect them against the harsh environment. By the early 1900’s cosmetic companies began developing cosmetic lines for women all over the world. But caution is advised, as some products and therapies may be harmful, either to the skin or systemically. Today, consumers have shown a preference for skin products with organic and natural ingredients. We asked Zsuzsanna Robbins, Esthetician and Owner of Miami Natural Skincare, to share some of her insights and experiences in helping us understand what is out there and what is best.

dangerous procedures. What do you advice? A. As someone who personally struggled with acne for many years, I know how crucial it is to choose the right treatment for any skin concern as early as possible to prevent future skin damage. Being a holistic esthetician, I avoid Botox and fillers. My passion is researching and offering non-invasive, non-toxic procedures that benefit the skin. I use and recommend only the highest quality organic or natural, non-toxic skin care lines. I do not believe in microdermabrasion, lasers and deep chemical peels. Too many have come to me with skin damage done by lasers and harsh chemical peels. I have a more holistic approach to beauty.

Q. To what do you attribute your success and that of your client’s skin care? A. I followed my passion and made it my career. I achieve great results by combining innovative machine treatments with pharmaceutical grade serums and organic products (some were featured at the 2017 Oscars). I truly believe that the skin needs to be treated gently. By using high quality skincare (and hair) products, I ensure no toxins will enter our bodies through the skin, which is our largest organ. Can We Treat Alzheimer’s With Alternative Medicine? Ibogaine seems promising for treating the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. by Mona Sabbah

J

ust last month was National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness and Caregiver Month. In fact, President Ronald Reagan designated November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Month back in 1983. At the time, less than 2 million Americans had the disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association (NA). Today, the disease, mostly known for memory loss, claims about 5.4 million victims. Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, yet there are a lot of myths surrounding this neurodegenerative disease and that’s probably because it simply isn’t fully understood by the medical community. For example, contrary to popular belief, Alzheimer’s isn’t a normal part of aging. The NA reports that about 200,000 Americans under the age of 65 years old (mostly between 40 and 50 years old) have younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease, that’s about 5% of the Alzheimer’s-affected population.

Essentially, ibogaine allows your body to reboot, and heal itself from the inside out. It affects brain receptors, resetting dopamine and serotonin levels in order to send better signals for better functioning. Ultimately it has positive effects on an aging brain. You’ve seen the marches in support of those affected with Alzheimer’s, you’ve heard about the various chapters nationwide, read about city proclamations declaring November as the month to raise awareness, but what exactly is Alzheimer’s Disease? Simply put, it’s a form of dementia (accounting for about 60% to 80% of all dementia) that causes problems with memory loss, thinking and behavior. It’s a progressive disease, worsening as time goes by, interfering with daily life. People with Alzheimer’s may not remember their address, have trouble carrying a conversation, have a hard time with paying attention or focusing, and the likes. Visual perception as well as reasoning and judgment may also be impaired. Since Alzheimer’s is progressive, relatively smaller problems may occur first. For example, before people forget where they live, they may start forgetting they’ve booked a doctor’s appointment.

Ibogaine Shows promise

Unfortunately, there’s no cure for Alzheimer’s. There are only treatments for the neurodegenerative diseases symptoms. According to NA, those affected can live an average of about eight years after the symptoms are noticeable to others. For some surviving Alzheimer’s takes its toll sooner, while others have another 20 years after being diagnosed. But why does Alzheimer’s have to be a death sentence? According to Executive Program Director at the Ibogaine Clinic, David Dardashti, ibogaine can treat the disease. Just an hour outside Cancun International Airport, Mexico, David Dardashti has administered ibogaine treatments to people with Alzheimer’s. The natural substance is derived from the Tabernanthe iboga tree in West Africa and wellknown worldwide for its healing properties. At the Ibogaine Clinic, it’s purified to 99.5%, pharmaceutical-grade ibogaine hydrochloride for safe and best result. Just a few years ago, David Dardashti treated Dr. Menashe, a surgeon and cardiologist, for his early onset Alzheimer’s. The 80-year old was administered a specific ibogaine protocol for memory loss, which includes unique dosage and intervals. Dr. Menashe was so impressed with the results, he’s even agreed

to two video testimonials about ibogaine and how it helped him regain 75% of his memory loss. A quick search online supports these results. A naturopathic doctor, Dr. Grodski, boasts about ibogaine’s neuroprotective properties that promote the survival of dopaminergic and motor neurons as well as an increase in levels of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). Essentially, ibogaine allows your body to reboot, and heal itself from the inside out. It affects brain receptors, resetting dopamine and serotonin levels in order to send better signals for better functioning. Ultimately it has positive effects on an aging brain. Dr. Grodski even refers to studies where direct infusions of GDNF resulted in a 61% improvement in performing daily life activities for people with Parkinson’s, another neurodegenerative disorder. Ibogaine falls in the alternative medicine category, but research is being done to find out how the natural substance can be leveraged to treat many other diseases. Brazil, New Zealand and Mexico have reported studies on ibogaine. For more information about ibogaine, please contact David Dardashti by visiting ibogaineclinic.com or call 1-888-741-3121. The Road to Fossil Fuel Dependence by McKay Jenkins The U.S. interstate highway system was designed to keep America safe in case of invasion, but it had dramatic consequences for the way we live today.

A

friend of mine recently said that he found it easier to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of capitalism. I thought about this idea a great deal as I was doing research for my book Food Fight: GMOs and the Future of the American Diet. The deeper I looked, the more it became clear that many of the serious environmental problems the world currently faces—climate change, soil depletion, chemical pollution, species loss—are intractable not because of a failure of human intelligence but because of a failure of human imagination. Or perhaps, more precisely, a failure of memory. Remember: Our current precipitous ecological decline only began accelerating about 75 years ago, a change driven by World War II. As much as the war tore holes in the heart of Europe and Asia, it also, in its aftermath, hit the rest of the world like a meteor. In the years after the war, the United States decided that the best way to defend itself against future invasion was to build a monumental interstate highway system. This network of wide, highly engineered superhighways—modeled after the German Autobahn and named for President Dwight Eisenhower—would allow the free deployment of armored vehicles from Maine to Florida, from Washington to San Diego, and everywhere in between. 44

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

www.namiami.com

So far so good. The U.S. has not recently been invaded by land. But in a dramatic example of unintended consequences, the interstate highway system, designed to keep the U.S. safe, has been a root cause of dramatic global political and environmental instability. The interstates—all 47,000 miles of them—have not just been used for troop transport, of course. As larger and larger roadways were constructed, they not only connected major cities but led to an endless series of concentric ring roads around cities. This allowed more and more Americans to move out into the seemingly infinite number of housing developments built in the suburbs. Again, so far so good. This was the American Dream: the big house in the suburbs; the two-car garage; the home full of flat-screen televisions; the whole bit. And the cost? Most obviously, all these roads, and all these cars, made the U.S. a country of commuters, utterly dependent on fossil fuels to drive their vehicles, and to heat and cool their big houses. But fossil fuels were also turned into everything from cosmetics and wall-to-wall carpeting to baby pajamas and plastic water bottles—all the innumerable consumer products we now can’t imagine giving up. It has become a cliché to remark that Americans make up less than 5 percent of the world’s population yet consume 25 percent of the world’s energy. This is where that number was born. The myriad problems associated with our dependence on fossil fuels (warfare in oil-producing countries; climate change; rising sea levels, ocean acidification, species loss) can all, in large measure, be traced to the explosion of growth that sprouted along the American interstate highway system. There’s more. All those suburban roadways and housing developments also gave rise to a colossal shift in land use known as the Great American Lawn. There are now some 63,000 square miles of turf grass in the U.S., and lawn care has become something of a national obsession. So far so good. But lawns require the cutting of forests, the removal of native plants, and for many people extensive use of lawn chemicals. So the question remains: Is it possible to imagine, or to remember, a time when we didn’t need all of this? All of these lawn chemicals and plastic bottles and monoculture food crops that do little more than make corn chips and fast food burgers? Philip Stein is a Leader in Wearable Sleep Technology by Linda Sechrist

F

rom computers, cell phones, smart TVs, DVR players and programmable appliances to a seemingly endless list of other electronic gadgets, we are in constant contact with unnatural electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) generated by technology. In today’s 24/7 society, invisible EMFs are inescapable; they permeate our working and living spaces. What we may not know is how they negatively impact our body’s natural sleep-wake cycle: suppressing melatonin, the hormone that controls the natural circadian rhythm, disturbing slumber and even affecting weight gain, according to University of Tel Aviv research. On the brighter side, some new technological products promise to restore balance to the body, including deeper and more restful sleep. From the Philip Stein sleep bracelet, sleep number beds and portable sleep trackers to sleep-related

apps, devices and applications, user-friendly innovations are addressing America’s sleep deprivation problem. “Philip Stein lifestyle accessories such as the sleep bracelet are designed to contribute to a better quality of life. The unique technology inside each one channels beneficial natural frequencies in the environment into your body,” says Will Stein, co-founder and president of the Philip Stein Group. “The result is to help the individual feel centered, balanced, grounded and more easily able to maintain a sense of well-being.” The company defines optimal well-being as a state of harmony achieved through physical, emotional, mental and spiritual alignment. Although natural-frequency technology was developed earlier by a group of engineers and scientists exploring various frequencies’ influence on water, the initial discovery has been attributed to ancient sages in India that intuited them. For example, 7.83 Hz, the frequency of “om”, happens to be Mother Earth’s natural heartbeat rhythm, now known as the Schumann Resonance. Aligned with the brain’s alpha and theta states, this technology of resonating frequencies has been carefully tuned and tested by Philip Stein researchers, technicians and sleep experts. Today, it is at the core of all Philip Stein products. Philip Stein’s tuning technology picks up and channels the beneficial natural frequencies that have always surrounded human beings. “We believe that all organisms have evolved or grown accustomed to these natural frequencies, and our systems are tuned to operate best with them, rather than with the increasing number of manmade frequencies we experience in the modern world,” explains Stein. Regardless of age, gender or race, my clients are people who realize that waiting for the body to break down, then expecting a doctor or a pill to fix them is not a viable option. Most of my clients are prepared to take responsibility for their own health while seeking my assistance to shed light on their blind spots.

As D.C for the cast of Hamilton, what do you find Broadway actors need most? The performers I work with take their health very seriously and are in excellent physical shape. It’s my job to help them stay that way. I do so by ensuring that their spine, extremities and muscles are in alignment. This is how we prevent injury and optimize flexibility, symmetry of movement, and balance.

What do you think is the hardest part about being on Broadway? Keeping a balance between work, rest and “life happens” is a challenge for everybody. For Broadway performers, keeping a balance is imperative because, like professional athletes, they rely on their bodies to deliver night after night.

It must be exciting to work with the cast of such a hit show. How many times have you seen Hamilton?

Broadway Show Hamilton

Indeed, it is inspiring to help people who bring beauty and joy into the world. Before I began my collaboration with Hamilton, I was required to see the show in order to comprehend the physical movements of the performers. To date, I have only seen the entire show once, but I observe rehearsals on a regular basis. I am planning on seeing the show again soon for pleasure rather than with a clinical eye.

Lynne McTaggart on the

POWER OF GROUP INTENTION by April Thompson

T

hirty years ago, speaker, author and journalist Lynne McTaggart recovered from an illness using alternative approaches to health. Since then, she’s been exploring the frontiers of healing through consciousness and alternative medicine. In the 1990s, McTaggart, who lives in London, started a newsletter called What Doctors Don’t Tell You, now an international magazine and popular platform at wddty.com that cites thousands of resources showing what works and doesn’t work in conventional and alternative medicine and how to beat chronic conditions naturally. McTaggart’s seven books include The Intention Experiment, The Field, The Bond and most recently, The Power of Eight. Her latest work examines the transformative power of small groups of people sending thoughts together for a common goal.

stress disorder. To date, 26 of those 30 experiments resulted in positive, measurable, mainly scientifically significant effects. We’ve seen the pH of water change by a full pH number and seen seeds grow twice as much as control seeds. We also conducted three peace intention experiments with interesting results: After our eight-day intention for Sri Lanka during its civil war, violence levels fell; the government had won several decisive battles that week; and within a few months that 25-year war was over. We can’t say with certainty that we had a hand in this, but our other peace experiments showed similar results. If it happens a few more times, that becomes compelling.

Can you summarize the results of your experiments of healing through collective intentions?

Was it intention, the power of the group or altruism? I think it’s a little of all of these. We’ve found that larger groups do not have a larger effect, which brought about the “power of eight” concept. I’ve discovered all that’s needed is a group, whether it’s eight or 8,000. In a group, we seem to lose our sense of individuality and separation from the world. We experience an overwhelming sense of oneness with the other intenders, which may be why our influence then becomes more powerful.

We’ve done hundreds of experiments using small and large groups; 30 were tightly controlled scientific studies conducted in conjunction with researchers at institutions such as the University of Arizona, University of California and Penn State University. The experiments have involved all kinds of intentions, ranging from the relatively simple to the impossibly complex. The large-scale intention experiments involved upwards of 25,000 participants remotely logging onto a website to view photos of the targets, sometimes 8,000 miles away, and sending them a well-defined intention, like changing the pH balance of water or healing a war veteran of post-traumatic 48

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

What conditions were the most conducive to manifesting positive results?

How did the act of sending positive intentions affect the senders? I was most surprised by the rebound effects reported by participants, whom I started surveying after the Sri Lankan peace experiment. Thousands of ex-

traordinary comments related not only how participants felt during the activity, but also afterwards; they were experiencing major shifts in their relationships, health, careers and well-being. All they had done was sit individually in front of their computer holding an intention, yet they experienced the altered and mystical states of consciousness described by psychologist Abraham Maslow as “peak experiences”. Life University, a large chiropractic university in Atlanta, worked with us to study the brainwaves of participants in six “power of eight” groups and found that senders had decreased activity in their frontal and parietal lobes, which govern the sense of self. It was like the boundaries between participants were dissolving into a state of oneness. To me, this partly explained the sense of oneness, compassion and love they

Why does “groupthink” have such a powerful, multiplicative effect? I think a huge part of it has to do with the power of getting off of yourself and setting an intention for someone else. Another is the connection created in a group. When we engage together in an activity like praying or setting altruistic intentions, we create a powerful virtual circle that proves healing to both the receivers and senders. news is that crowding can be corrected in a very short time with Invisalign and acceleration, sometimes in a matter of weeks.

Q. My dentist says I should do a crown and fillings but I don’t have any pain. Should I do it? A. Pain does not equal problem. Some of the worst infections that require teeth to be extracted have zero pain. Some very minor issues which are very annoying and sensitive sometimes require very minor work. Those who wait on issues almost always end up with bigger problems.

Q. Food gets trapped in my teeth when I eat meat or salad. Why?

Dental Wisdom Common Questions We Ask Our Dentist

I

t is understood that not everyone enjoys a dental visit. Dental anxiety and phobia are common indicators. Understanding your symptoms and the required procedures alleviates, if not dispels those pesky anxieties. Dr. Abraham Jaskiel DMD, PA from Brickell Avenue Cosmetic, Holistic, & General Dentistry recognizes the challenges and has created the following list of commonly asked questions to help you feel more at ease when establishing a long-term partnership with your dentist.

Q. Overeating, especially during the holidays, can cause acid reflux or GERD. Does this affect our teeth? A. Yes. People with acid reflux tend to show a tremendous amount of erosion on and around their teeth. This erosion could be very damaging and create a need, if bad enough, to restore teeth with crown veneers and/or fillings. Signs include pitting or cupping on your teeth, more translucent teeth, cavities around the gum line, and noticeable sensitivity. It can also make your teeth brittle and more fracture prone, and create a more acidic 50

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

environment in your mouth where bacteria can thrive more easily leading to tooth decay. But some symptoms can be silent, which means you may have unknowingly had acid reflux for a long time. Remedies for acid reflux include watching what you eat, and if erosion is the problem, there are gels and pastes that can slow down the progression.

Q. My teeth seem to be crowding, my friend says it’s probably my wisdom teeth pushing. Is that true? A. This is a very controversial question, and what sounds logical may not be fully true. The short answer is that based on my experience, crowding does not come from wisdom tooth pushing. I’ve seen people with no wisdom teeth who experience crowding later in life. My wife included who had her wisdoms pulled, then got crowding in her 30’s. Crowding can be very annoying, not look good, and gather more food and bacteria. Even lower crowding can push upper teeth to crowd. Crowding can be caused by clenching and grinding which can shift teeth, or several other reasons including sometimes wisdom teeth, depending on the angulations. The good

www.namiami.com

A. You may have space in between your teeth small enough to trap food. Space can be caused by open contact, fractures or cavities. However it’s natural to have a little snap between your teeth when you floss. This shows there is contact between them. Ask your dentist to evaluate your teeth to see if a problem exists. Ignoring the problem can lead to periodontal gum and bone issues or bigger cavities.

Q. Why am I sensitive after having a cleaning, scaling and root planing? A. Bacteria can act as a barrier that covers our teeth and prevents sensitivity. When bacteria is removed and filled in, sensitivity can arise. This is also a reason why sometimes people have pain after fillings are done. But that same bacteria, if not removed, can and will cause decay gum and bone issues. So these procedures are important to your overall dental health.

Q. At what age should I schedule my child’s first visit to the dentist, and how do I introduce them to dentistry? A. American Dental Association recommends that children be seen starting at age two. You should definitely brush your child’s teeth as soon as they have any teeth to brush using none fluoride toothpaste until they’re able to spit out on their own. Introducing your child to dental visits in a positive way is key. You don’t want to use any negative

words to describe the experience. Explain it as a positive adventure, explaining it as this is going to be so much fun, I love my dentist, I get to watch TV, I get a prize after brushing my teeth and counting them, you get the picture.

therapyspotlight

Q. I have trust issues. How can I be more confident with the recommended treatment? A. Ask your dentist to explain in great detail his diagnosis and why the treatment is necessary. I understand how clients feel because I’ve felt the same way. I put myself in the patient’s shoes and ask what I would like to hear that would make me more comfortable. In my office, we’ve adopted the policy of explaining before, during and after each procedure, reliving concerns as we go along. At the end of the day, you just have to be comfortable with the training, expertise and experience of the dentist you’ve chosen.

Q. My doctor told me I can’t undergo surgery before getting cleared by my dentist. Why? A. Our teeth and gums may have bacteria or infections we don’t know about. Even something like bleeding gums is a sign of infection and could compromise the final outcome of a surgery or lead to serious complications afterwards. Surgeons and other physicians know that bacteria can get into the bloodstream and travel throughout our body. I have patients who haven’t been good candidates for surgery because of lingering infections. If you are in need of surgery make sure you see your dentist first. Basics of CranioSacral Therapy

F

or those who haven’t heard of CranioSacral Therapy (CST), it’s a gentle, light touch, fully clothed whole body routine. A CST therapist works with the body’s craniosacral system which produces and houses cerebral spinal fluid. This fluid supports and nourishes the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). The techniques commonly used were developed by osteopathic physician, Dr. John E. Upledger (1932-2012). The focus during treatment is on improving the structure of the body—in particular the central nervous system—so the body as a whole can work at its highest level. When the body’s connective tissue (fascia) is out of balance in any way, the entire body in some manner is affected. Auto accidents, operations, poor diet, compounded daily stress, acute emotional trauma can all affect this delicately balanced fabric resulting in headaches, chronic neck and back pain, PTSD, stress and chronic fatigue, among other ailments. It was through this therapy that TJ Mallet, LMT, CST, VMP, of Total Balance 4 U, was able to alleviate her own chronic pain. To that end, she is passionate in assisting others with alleviating their pain and restoring them to vitality and vibrant health. Location: 2800 E. Commercial Blvd., Ste. 211, Fort Lauderdale. Celebrating the Holidays The Healthy Way by Marilyn DeMartini

T

he holidays offer us time and reason to gather with family and friends to celebrate all the goodness in our lives. We take pretty pictures of decorations, smiling faces, hugs and laughter—all while gathered around a bountiful spread of holiday food and toasting each other’s good health with holiday spirits. And that’s where the danger begins. GLUCOSE: Our bodies endure an approximate two-hour jolt from high glucose and insulin after a normal meal—but that rapid increase is even greater with holiday portions and menus. Glucose-spiking foods like mashed potatoes, bread stuffing, rolls, corn and multiple desserts and cookies make traditional holiday meals a rollercoaster nightmare for our bloodstream.

The pancreas secretes insulin while the liver stores it. Insulin is an important hormone that regulates metabolism and helps our cells to absorb glucose to create energy or store fat. The liver releases insulin to maintain the delicate balance of glucose in our blood, enabling us to utilize the proteins, fats and carbohydrates we eat. However, when we ingest the amounts of addictive simple sugars that have infiltrated our modern diets, that delicate balance is drastically disrupted and we experience increased levels of glucose and insulin. This insulin imbalance can be particularly troublesome as we get older. Aging cells become insulin resistant or insulin sensitive so they are unable to absorb the insulin and utilize glucose; blood sugar levels then elevate along with blood pressure and start a downward spiral of age-related diseases like atherosclerosis, hypertension, lipid abnormalities, chronic inflammation, Type 2 Diabetes, obesity and cancer. TWO MAJOR TYPES OF DIABETES Type 1 Diabetes can occur at any age but is most commonly diagnosed from infancy to late 30s. People diagnosed as such find their pancreas produces little to no insulin and the body’s immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. They must inject insulin several times per day or infuse insulin through a pump as well as manage their diet and exercise habits. Type 2 Diabetes has recently become more common in children and in adults over 40. Their bodies still produce insulin but cannot balance insulin and glucose levels, causing metabolic issues that may show no symptoms. However, the imbalance and high levels of insulin and glucose lead to many disorders and even death. Diabetes is reported by the American Diabetes Association as the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. and they also report that 51 percent of Americans over 65 are pre-diabetic and many have been undiagnosed. The disease costs

hundreds of billions of dollars in diagnosis and treatment and for the most part, Type 2 Diabetes can be avoided through diet and exercise. That sobering statement should be a wake-up call to sugar addicts and a warning to those who are aging and not noticing their changes in diet and lack of exercise. Your body can get all the glycogen it needs from healthy foods and we should guard against products that are loaded with sucrose, high fructose sugar and even chemically laden sugar substitutes. A look at your food labels may surprise you! Sugars also offer the perfect fuel for rapidly producing cancer cells and the proliferation of that disease certainly mirrors our increase in sugar consumption over the years. While many factors can influence a tendency toward cancer, sugar consumption is one that can be controlled. RECOMMENDATIONS from The Alternative Medicine Center The most dangerous time for your body is right after a meal when insulin and glucose rapidly surge and the inflammation caused can affect vision, brain function, kidney function and stiffening of the heart muscle and arteries, creating a greater chance of suffering a stroke, heart attack or heart failure—not the way you want to imagine your post-holiday dinner. While portion control and alternative menu selections are ways of addressing a better “home for the holidays” experience, you may also want to consider taking a brisk walk after dinner, passing on dessert—or maybe just having a sliver of pie. Other tips: © A high quality multivitamin/mineral supplement, preferably 100 percent carbon-bond organic, will contain easily absorbable trace minerals and B vitamins that are critical for healthy blood sugar balance. This supplement also has a host of other bioavailable nutrients that benefit the body in many important ways, including digesting, metabolizing and eliminating the foods you will consume. © Extra chromium (about 200 mcg)

may be required to activate the mechanism that allows the transport of glucose into the cell where it can be metabolized for energy while also lowering circulating blood sugar to stable levels. © Squeezing an organic lemon on as many foods as you can and drinking it fresh squeezed in spring or purified water will help to improve insulin signaling, boost liver function and stabilize blood sugar.

© Your stomach doesn’t have teeth, so chew each bite of food 25 to 50 times and digestion will be much less stressful on your gastrointestinal tract. Source: The Alternative Medicine Center, 640 E. the aroma of flowers, moss or salt; the texture of grass, leaves or sand under your feet. All these sensations are there every time you visit these places. It only takes a moment to notice them, to realize that they are there to make them PRESENT. Relax your body, breathe gently until you feel comfortable (important), open your eyes to look at the clouds or close them to create the space where you would like to be in that moment. Do not think, do not remember, do not interrupt, just let your being flow. Nature reminds us every day that we are not alone in this world. There are a multitude of beings that share with us this beautiful planet. It is enough to sit for a moment in nature and to observe, to feel, to listen and to perceive with all the senses the life that surrounds us.

Meditation: A Journey To Your Inner World by Victoria Danelczyk

W

e have all heard about the benefits of meditation. Some people practice it and others pass it by doubting the benefits of such simple practice. It is so simple that perhaps for this reason the favor of doubt is attributed to it— sometimes without experiencing it. Meditation is not only the action of sitting in an empty place and disconnecting with the outside (which is ideal), but more so the goal is to achieve a state of peace and harmony with ourselves and our environment, recover control and continue our daily lives in the healthiest way possible—regardless of external events. Many people have heard of the benefits of meditation and very much want to experience them. Submerging for a few minutes in a state of interior silence, disconnecting from the outer world, not only improves our mental state and reduces anxiety and stress but also helps reduce the risk of psychosomatic diseases, prevent insomnia, relax the muscles and relieve us of accumulated tensions, giving us emotional tranquility. Above all, meditation affords us selfconsciousness about our own body and allows us to develop concentration. By meditating, we become relaxed and our body is so closely intertwined with what we are doing, that we can connect with our feelings, with our instincts—a state often lost in becoming so-called “adults”. Meditation assists us in restoring this natural state. When you want to find your essence, when you want to know the answers, when you want to escape, look for a quiet, cool, clean place where you can relax for a couple of minutes—five, maybe twenty or the whole afternoon. If you have the opportunity to sit down for a moment by the river, on the beach, in a forest or anywhere that allows you to be in contact with nature, you may be able to connect with yourself. In other words, look for the NOW. By being present you can perceive with your five senses the sensations around you: the sound of the wind, the sea or the water of a river; 54

The simple fact of noticing how your body feels—without judging it, without engaging in a story and only feeling— this is already a meditation. Listen to it and let it guide you, connect with the Universe so that it will work in your favor. It is you who have all your answers—when you reach that peace where the outside does not exist in you—it is at that moment where your “I Am” is powerful, genuine. If you are a beginner, a suggestion is to meditate with sound such as Tibetan singing bowls. Sound meditation helps to reduce stress, creating a deep sensation of inner peace, balance and harmony while the cells of your body receive a gentle inner massage. Gong meditation clears you on the inside emotionally; a gong bath is a unique and highly personal experience. The gong speaks to each one of us individually, meeting us wherever we are on our life journey. To cleanse, the subconscious—the listener—only has to let go and let the sound of the gong do the work as it bathes the body, mind and soul. The experience is effortless and the results profound. Simply meditate on the sound or vibration. Meditating and calming the mind are the secret for health and longevity. Meditation is like giving a hug to ourselves, getting in touch with that awesome reality in us. While meditating we feel a deep sense of intimacy with God, a love that is inexplicable. ~ Paramahansa Yogananda Victoria Danelczyk is a licensed massage therapist, reiki master, kundalini yoga teacher and co-owner of Healing Harmony Wellness Center, located at 9690 W. Start the New in a Positive Note

T

o commemorate the 125th anniversary of the birth of Paramahansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi and founder of Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF), we are featuring the following excerpts from one of Yogananda’s talks on how to start the New Year on a positive note. The excerpts are from his talk “Make New Determinations: Be What You Want to Be,” which he gave on December 31, 1934 at the international headquarters of SRF. More to come in our January issue. Y Make new determinations as to what you are going to do and what you are going to be in this next year. Set a program for yourself; carry it through, and you will find how much happier you will be. Failure to keep to your schedule of improvement means you have paralyzed your will. You have no greater friend and no greater enemy than yourself. If you befriend yourself, you will find accomplishment. There is no law of God preventing you from being what you want to be and accomplishing what you want to accomplish.

Sleigh Riding in Stockbridge Bonnie White For 30 years, Bonnie White lived and worked on her family’s horse farm in Canaan, New York, savoring rural life. When the barn closed in 2002, she resumed a passion put aside for more than 20 years: painting. White began attending area craft shows and fell in love with folk art. Her life on the farm and familiarity with the surrounding mountains, valleys, historic homes and villages have sparked unlimited ideas. Today, White’s colorful portrayals of Americana continue to evoke heartwarming memories of small-town life and simple pleasures. She accompanies each work with loving details about the characters that populate her villages and the community events that tie them together. “I’m lucky enough to live a few minutes from this picture-book town in Massachusetts,” she writes of Sleigh Riding in Stockbridge. “It’s especially fun to visit during Christmas time. The original painting can be seen there in the window of Williams and Sons General Store, on Main Street.” In 2007, White was invited to design an ornament for the Blue Room Christmas Tree at the White House. She and her husband still reside on the family farm with their sons, dog and cats. View the artist’s portfolio at Bonnie WhiteFolkArt.com.
