Kindness and the Big Picture
I
believe in the principal of yin and yang, that all things exist as inseparable and contradictory opposites. Through this believe I’ve seen, and deeply experienced, good things manifest from bad. I began my journey with Natural Awakenings Magazine 19 years ago, when I felt lost and didn’t have a specific direction. At first, lots of thigs felt confusing and unattainable. Healthy trends seem unsurmountable to keep up with and, asking total strangers to trust the goal of this publication was petrifying. But when I attended my NA training and delve into the real message and purpose of this publication, I knew I was home. It took me to another place, one that gave me comfort in my decision. I got lost in delicious recipes, creative projects, and a synergy of information which made life better for everyone. The bigger picture of my true purpose gradually revealed, I needed to be kinder to myself and push any fears and doubts away. Get out of my own way and allow the experience presented to guide me in this, my next chapter in my life. These days, as we feel surrounded by a seemingly divided country, small acts of kindness to yourself and others can have a huge impact on your happiness and purpose in life. Recently, during my transition to a newly purchased home, I had to move in with mom. She couldn’t have been kinder and more welcoming. Helping mom around the house, running errands and our favorite project, working in the garden, gave us both reasons to smile. You see, Dad has Alzheimer’s and some days can be trying. But these shared moments helped us push forward. As you can read, we encounter situations of yin and yang every day. From seemingly chaotic or confusing situations come purpose and peace. Taoist principles explain that everything in the universe is in constant motion. As this continues the energy changes into the other. The concept teaches us that from every dark situation a light will shine, a lesson will be learned, a path will be forged. Where the day ends the night begins, where there is a moon the sun will rise, and when life challenges emerge, the solution is not far behind. This issue is brimming with ways to elevate your life, upgrade your relationships and your Self. My hope is that they make your May and the rest of your year a healthier one. From my heart to yours, I wish all moms a Happy Mother’s Day – with a huge special shout-out to my mom who always taught me to see the bigger picture as well as understanding how a little kindness goes a long way. In this spirit I share her favorite quote: “you can catch more with honey than vinegar.”

The Evensons: Celebrate 40 Years, Peace Through Music
I
n 1979, when Dudley and Dean Evenson first sold their tapes out of the back of their van at craft fairs, they had no idea that 40 years later their sound healing music would be listened to over a billion times on Pandora alone. The year 2019 marks an exciting chapter in the story of their label, Soundings of the Planet. They are releasing *Peace through Music 40th Anniversary Collection, curated from four decades of award-winning tracks popular in the fields of massage, yoga, meditation and relaxation. The Evensons were among the first to combine the sounds of nature with their peaceful music with the intention of bringing awareness to protecting Mother Earth. People had never heard such relaxing music and said they would have to create their own genre. Additionally, the Evensons have a vast collection of videos produced since 1970. They are currently in the process of archiving hundreds-of-hours of video interviews with yogis, gurus, Native American wisdom keepers, healers and new thought leaders. Their book, *Quieting the Monkey Mind: How to Meditate with Music, brings together the wisdom of their life experiences. Their music can be heard on all streaming services worldwide. Vita-Health Introduces Cryosauna
D
avid and Yelena Pakula, husband and wife co-owners of Vita-Health Wellness Center, are always looking for new technologies to help their patients. Their newest addition is a cryosauna. Whole body cryotherapy (WBC) by cryosauna involves the use of liquid nitrogen, introduced into an upright chamber where the patient stands, producing extreme cold temperatures on the skin. The procedure results in a simulated fightor-flight response within a safe, controlled environment. It’s safe because the cold remains on the skin during the three-minute procedure and the body’s core temperature remains constant. In reaction to what the brain perceives to be a cold injury threat, blood rushes to the core to protect the vital organs. After the procedure, supercharged blood returns to the peripheral tissues. There is also a reprogramming effect for various systems as the body seeks to diagnose and remedy the cause of the perceived threat. The health benefits are wide-ranging: faster recovery from workouts and injuries; inflammation and pain reduction; arthritis relief; weight loss and cellulite reduction; improvement in immune and nervous system function, hormonal and mood disorders, chronic metabolic conditions and more.

Japanese researchers interviewed 1,003 Tokyo women over 70 years old about which of 16 types of exercise they did, including dancing, calisthenics, jogging, golf, ball games, hiking, yoga, bicycling and tai chi. In eight years of follow-up, those that danced were 73 percent less likely to be classified as impaired in any of the “activities of daily living” such as walking, cooking, dressing and bathing—a result not produced by the other physical activities. “Dancing requires not only balance, strength and endurance ability, but also cognitive ability: adaptability and concentration to move according to the music and partner; artistry for graceful and fluid motion; and memory for choreography,” writes lead author Yosuke Osuka, of the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology.

Women in menopause that are mindful and nonjudgmental of their thoughts are less irritable, anxious and depressed, reports a Mayo Clinic study recently published in Climacteric, the journal of the International Menopause Society. Researchers gave questionnaires to 1,744 menopausal patients 40 to 65 years old and found that those with higher mindfulness scores struggled less with common menopausal symptoms. Mindfulness didn’t lower hot flash and night sweat symptoms, however.

Mindfulness May Ease Menopausal Symptoms
U.S. Heart Disease on the Rise Forty-eight percent of American adults have some form of cardiovascular disease, reported the American Heart Association (AHA) in its annual update. The increase is partly due to 2017 updated guidelines redefining high blood pressure as greater than 130/80 millimeters of mercury rather than 140/90, which raised the number of Americans with diagnosed
Simply changing a diet to include more fruit and vegetables can boost mental well-being, say British researchers from Leeds and York universities. Examining health data of 40,000 people, they concluded those that eat more produce have a better psychological state, and that eating just one extra portion of fruits and vegetables a day could have a positive effect equivalent to around eight extra days of walking a month for at least 10 minutes at a time. A meta-analysis of 16 studies by the UK’s University of Manchester found the mood-boosting effect was particularly strong for women, and it worked with different types of diets, indicating a particular approach is not necessary. When dietary changes were combined with exercise, even greater improvements resulted.

Exercise Improves Young Brains, Too
Selenium and CoQ10 Provide Lasting Benefits
Walking, cycling, climbing stairs and other aerobic activities may improve brain function not only in older people, but also in younger folk, according to a Columbia University study published in Neurology. The study recruited 132 people between 20 and 67 years old that didn’t exercise and had below-average fitness levels. Half stretched and toned four times a week for six months and half exercised aerobically on a treadmill, stationary bike or elliptical machine. When they were evaluated for their executive function thinking skills—regulating behavior, paying attention and achieving goals—the aerobics group improved twice as much as the stretching group. “The people who exercised were testing as if they were about 10 years younger at age 40 and about 20 years younger at age 60,” says study author Yaakov Stern, Ph.D.
Swedish seniors that took coenzyme Q10 and selenium during a fouryear study were still benefiting 12 years later with a reduced cardiovascular mortality risk of more than 40 percent. In the original study, Linköping University researchers gave 443 independently living seniors over 70 years old either a placebo or 200 milligrams of CoQ10 and 200 milligrams of selenium per day. Those on the supplements showed a reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, improved heart function, less hospitalization, more vitality and a better quality of life. Twelve years later, the researchers examined autopsies and death certificates, and found the supplement-takers had a lower risk of death compared to the placebo group, even if they had diabetes, high blood pressure or ischemic heart disease.

Hatching a Record
Avian Senior Citizen Astounds Again Being at least 68 years old didn’t deter Wisdom, a Laysan Albatross, from recently hatching another chick. The world’s oldest known banded wild bird, which roosts at the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, in Hawaii, has birthed and raised more than 30 chicks in her lifetime. She and her mate-for-life Akeakamai spent about two months incubating the new egg, and now they’ll raise the chick for five to six months before it flies out to sea. It is uncommon for albatross to return, lay and hatch an egg every single year, but the pair has proeach year since 2006, say U.S Fish and Wildlife Service officials. 14

As the Appalachian economy struggles with the loss of three-fifths of its coal mining jobs in the last three decades, a surprising option is emerging for some: beekeeping. The Appalachian Beekeeping Collective offers beekeeping training, including bees and equipment and ongoing mentoring, for displaced coal miners and low-income residents of mining towns; so far, about 35 people are participating. Landowners are donating property for the beehives, which will be maintained without pesticides or antibiotics. Honey from a single hive can bring in about $750 a season, or $15,000 per 20, and additional money can be made selling the beeswax for candles and lip balm. The beekeeping collective is part of Appalachian Headwaters, a nonprofit formed in 2016 with a $7.5 million lawsuit settlement from coal mine operator Alpha Natural Resources for violations of the Clean Water Act. The money has been used to fund environmental restoration projects and to develop sustainable economic opportunities in the coal mining communities of West Virginia.
Nuclear Testing Linked to Radioactive Milk
The hundreds of nuclear bombs detonated on a remote Nevada test site during the Cold War produced radioactive fallout that led indirectly to the deaths of 340,000 to 690,000 Americans, concludes a recent study by economist Keith Meyers, Ph.D., of the University of Southern Denmark. Meyers conducted the research for his doctoral dissertation while attending the University of Arizona. By combining National Cancer Institute data measuring the radioactive element Iodine-131 in local cow milk with county-by-county mortality data, he found heightened death rates in the Midwest and Northeast between 1951 and 1973. The finding suggests that airborne radiation contaminated pastures that, in turn, made milk radioactive and led to the human ingestion of slow-acting, but fatal radioactive isotopes. In comparison, an estimated 200,000 to 350,000 people in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki died directly from the atomic bombs dropped on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively.

Higher federal standards for energy-efficient light bulbs established two years ago are in the process of being rolled back by the U.S. Department of Energy, part of a move toward widespread deregulation by the current administration. Consumers stand to lose about $100 per household per year in electric bill savings if the higher standards are not implemented, say critics. The wasted energy could result in more power plant pollution, which harms the environment and contributes to health problems like asthma. The plan would also stifle innovation, eliminating a powerful regulatory incentive for manufacturers and retailers to invest in high-quality, energy-efficient LED light bulbs.

Human Composting at the End of Life
Washington is poised to become the first state to make it legal to compost human remains. A bill allowing for the process, called natural organic reduction, as well as another called water cremation, has passed the state senate and is making its way to the house for a vote. Human composting involves placing a body in a tubular vessel and covering it with natural materials like wood chips and straw. Over several weeks, microbial activity breaks down the body into about a cubic yard of soil. Recompose, a company that wants to offer the practice as an alternative to traditional methods, worked with Washington State University to test its safety for environmental and human health. Six people donated their bodies for the study. The method alleviates much of the carbon footprint associated with both cremation and traditional casket burial.

Climate-Challenged Polar Bears Invade Town
About 50 polar bears that usually hunt seals from ice floes have found new cuisine in the garbage dumps in the remote Russian island military town of Belushya Gubam, about 1,200 miles northeast of Moscow. Its 2,000 residents, long accustomed to the occasional bear strolling through, now call it a “mass invasion” as the curious bears peer into windows, stare down barking dogs and dig through trash. Russia’s environmental response agency has sent in a crisis team that is studying how to remove the bears without killing them. The Barents Sea that the bears inhabit is undergoing what a recent study called a “rapid climate shift” from Arctic Ocean temperatures to warmer Atlantic Ocean-like temperatures; the entire western side of the island is now ice-free year round. Digital Receipts Gain Momentum
Compared to newspapers, magazines and junk mail, retail sales receipts may seem inconsequential in their use of trees and their footprint on the environment. Yet, getting and handling that tabulation of a sale is a health hazard that contributes to landfills. Certainly, some receipts are required for tax records and product returns, but the vast majority serve no future purpose; there’s also a better and safer option than paper. Treehugger.com reports the annual waste from receipts in the U.S. totals 686 million pounds, and that skipping receipts would save 12 billion pounds

of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of 1 million cars on the road. The problem is getting worse as many retail outlets include special offers and other promotional information on receipts, making them longer and the corresponding amount of paper used greater. The Ecology Center, an educational nonprofit located in San Juan Capistrano, California, estimates that 93 percent of paper receipts are coated with Bisphenol-A (BPA) or Bisphenol-S (BPS), endocrine disrupters that are used as color developers to help make the receipts more legible. However, the presence of either makes them ineligible for recycling. According to Green America (GreenAmerica.org), BPA that can be “absorbed into our bodies through our hands in mere seconds,” can impact fetal development and “is linked to reproductive impairment, Type 2 diabetes, thyroid conditions and other health concerns.” Employees that regularly handle receipts have 30 percent more BPA or BPS in their bodies. In January, California Assembly member Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) introduced legislation (AB 161) nicknamed “skip the slip”, which would require retailers to offer digital receipts to customers. If it passes, it will be the first such law in the country.

Monarchs Need Species Protections
Being listed as part of the Endangered Species Act would protect monarch butterflies. In the 1980s, about 4.5 million butterflies spent winters along the California coast. This season’s stay is shaping up to consist of only about 30,000. Fully 99 percent of the species listed under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 are still with us today. To urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to give monarch butterflies the proven protection of the Endangered Species Act in June, sign the petition at Tinyurl.com/ProtectTheMonarchs.

Women play vital roles in family and community, much like the foundation of a sound building, and if self-care is not the bedrock, all that is supported by it is likely to be compromised. “I believe we’ve taken the bait, the promise that if we arrange our life circumstances just so, we’ll feel ease and happiness. We’re getting to a place as a collective where we see a bankruptcy in that,” says Miami-based holistic women’s psychiatrist Dr. Kelly Brogan, bestselling author of A Mind of Your Own: The Truth About Depression and How Women Can Heal Their Bodies to Reclaim Their Lives. Body-mind-spirit self-care is the heart of Brogan’s approach, and self-love is the lifeblood. “Self-love is quite elusive for most of us, perhaps because our selfesteem is contingent [upon it], and we only feel good about ourselves under certain circumstances. The daily choice to prioritize caring for oneself can ultimately lead to an experience of self-love and wholeness,” says Brogan, who compares a ritualized system of daily self-care that comes first to putting on the proverbial oxygen mask before attempting to meet the needs of others. “Balancing self-love and caring for others starts with recognizing and accepting that it’s possible for you to effectively do both. Self-love at the soul level is the catalyst for healing on all levels, which in turn drives our level of self-worth,” concurs Teigan Draig, a spiritual life coach and busy home-schooling mom in Spencerville, Ohio. She reminds us that putting our needs above the wants of others is not being selfish, but is an emotional necessity that helps women get out of the loop of self-defeatism and self-sabotage. “The first step to finding your fire is learning to love yourself, all of yourself. Self-care and selflove are a total wellness package.”

Benefits of Self-Nourishment
Many psychologists agree that self-care can help to improve concentration, promote relaxation, fortify relationships and boost productivity. Most women crave more metime, but don’t know how to implement change. “Without a premise of self-care, we react based on stress patterns. We react with more tension, irritability, guilt and obligation. We say, ‘Yes’ when we want to say, ‘No’. However, when we take stock in our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being, we’re less reactive,” observes Hassler, who underscores self-care as an investment for life. “Most women have inner critics and a negative relationship with self. Self-care is essential so we can turn down the volume of the inner critic, stop peoplepleasing and make self-honoring choices.” Balancing motherhood and career or other obligations can leave many women running on empty and resentful. “We would never tell a loved one who desperately needed some TLC to get over it and just keep going. As busy women, when we don’t take the time to care for ourselves, the consequence is our children getting a mom who is preoccupied, anxious and disconnected,” says women’s life coach Veronica Paris, in San Diego. Catering to everyone’s desires and spreading ourselves too thin can backfire. Paris asks, “How do I want my kids to look back on me as a mother? By taking the time to self-care, we’re taking accountability for how we want to show up in our world rather than shapeshifting from one situation to the next. We can teach our children how to do the same.”
Our Emotions As Wellspring
For too many women, another common byproduct of self-neglect can be emotional numbing and feeling “flatlined”. A toxic or addictive relationship to food, alcohol or shopping can be a symptom of a deep need to nourish the self and give a voice to suppressed feelings. “One of our greatest challenges is that we’ve become disconnected from our deep seat of power, which is our capacity to feel,” says Brogan. “We’ve been enculturated to disregard our experience of feeling emotions, and because of this, it’s been reduced to a very narrow bandwidth.” Brogan believes that it is key for women to reestablish a connection to nature’s
Sometimes my daily me-time was only five minutes here or 10 minutes there, but it saved my sanity. ~Teigan Draig rhythms and their own feminine, fluid energy, as well as giving up the need to control. “I think it’s the work of many women to understand that we’re not here to meet the needs of everyone on the planet—and with our loved ones, it disempowers them as much as we’re feeling disempowered. We’re here to meet our own needs and then offer compassion and caring in a way that comes from a more boundaried space.”
SIMPLE SELF-CARE STRATEGIES 4 Schedule me-time on the calendar. 4 Unplug from gadgets. 4 Spend lunch breaks in the park. 4 Rest before hitting the wall of exhaustion. 4 Take 10 minutes to stretch and breathe in the morning. 4 Meditate in the shower; choose a luxurious, natural, body wash. 4 Wear your favorite jewelry. 4 Designate a beautiful tea cup or coffee mug to use on hectic work days. 4 Buy yourself flowers; take yourself out to lunch or a museum. 4 Sprinkle lavender, rose geranium or ylang ylang essential oil on your sheets. 4 Opt for a gentle workout instead of a high-intensity session when tired. 4 Choose a healthy breakfast. 4 Play, be silly and be a kid again. 4 Designate 15 to 20 minutes after the workday to color, doodle or journal. 4 Listen to your favorite music during commuting or cleaning the house. 4 Abandon perfectionism. 4 Connect to a higher power, however you define it, even if it is inner peace.
Hassler affirms that when women are fully present, every aspect of life can be viewed through a clearer lens. “Self-care helps us tap into our super power, which is our intuition, and by doing that, we know what we need and act on that.”
Thrive With Small Changes
Beginning the day with self-care can be as simple as taking the time to meditate and breathe deeply for a minute or two before getting out of bed and opting for a healthier breakfast. Feeding our senses and feasting on what gives us joy can be a way of life. “Self-care does not necessarily have to involve time; it’s a way of being,” says Hassler. “The more time we spend on self-care tells the subconscious mind that we’re worth it.” Draig suggests setting personal boundaries, and part of this means reserving time for ourselves. “When I became a new mother, I was running on fumes. Sometimes my daily me-time was only five minutes here or 10 minutes there, but it saved my sanity. Learn to schedule selfcare time in your calendar as you would anything else,” she says, noting, “My house was not always spotless, but it was a trade I was willing to make so I could take care of myself and be a better mother.” Being innovative can be an ally. “Ten minutes walking the dog or taking the baby out in a stroller can become 10 minutes spent saying positive self-affirmations,” suggests Paris. “That 15-minute drive can be spent deep breathing instead of listening to the news on the radio.” Blooming into our best possible self is returning to our essence. “It’s about taking off the masks, no longer living according to expectations and other people. It’s about radical self-acceptance,” says Hassler. Each decade poses an invitation to grow and commit to self-nourishment. “There will be days where you feel like you can’t get the hang of it, but you’ll arrive, and when you do, no matter what age you are, it can be magical,” Draig says. he 5 million faithful listeners of National Public Radio’s award-winning weekly broadcast Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me! know that 20-year host Peter Sagal infuses wit and wisdom into his views of the news and the world. In his new book, The Incomplete Book of Running, he brings his trademark humor to a memoir that posits running as a mode of survival—and hope, persistence, practice and love as vehicles of redemption. Sagal’s collection of deeply personal lessons encompasses the emotional spectrum of running, body image and the special bonding between fellow runners. His exhilarating guide to life suggests we keep moving forward in all ways. He also reflects upon the 2013 Boston Marathon, where he finished moments before two bombs exploded, and explores how running helped him cope with a devastating divorce, depression and more. Sagal is also a playwright, screenwriter and the host of PBS’ Constitution USA with Peter Sagal when he’s not writing about the recreation he took up in mid-life where he found himself “lost, in a dark place” after a personal crisis. He lives near Chicago with his wife, Mara.
After becoming a serious runner at nearly 40, when did you realize running had evolved www.namiami.com
into something more than a simple mission to get healthy?
I was concerned about my weight, but mainly I was also concerned about getting older. I ran my first marathon in 2005 as an emotional reaction to growing older, and that’s when it all began to change for me. It struck me in a deep way as something I wanted to do better. I’ve rarely experienced the classic “runner’s high”—that endorphin-caused euphoria—although I do believe it exists. Rather, what’s more common is the sense that everything—body, mind—is working in concert, without discomfort, with strength, with ease. To paraphrase a line from Kurt Vonnegut, it’s when “everything is beautiful, and nothing hurts.”
As an advocate of escaping our “digital dystopia” of electronic screens by running outdoors, what’s the benefit you see in unplugging?
I’m a big fan of evolutionary biology. We evolved in very different circumstances than what we are living in now; to be attentive to the world and not with a screen in front of us. The reason we are up on two legs is so that we can look around and think. We’re supposed to ruminate.
ACROSS THE MILES O photo by Kyle Cassidy
ur sport seems mindless only to people who never run long enough for any thought to form other than, ‘When can I stop running?’ But the only way to succeed as a long-distance runner is to do it mindfully, to be aware of the body and the world it is moving through. I think about my motion and my breathing, my muscles and their state of agitation or stress or relaxation. I note my surroundings—the downward slope I would never notice driving this street, the hawk’s nest I would never see for lack of looking up, the figure in a window caught in a solitary moment of their own. I think about the true meaning of distance—about the learning that comes from running a mile in your own shoes. From The Incomplete Book of Running, by Peter Sagal.
I’ve met people who say they don’t run, but they walk, ride bikes, hike in the woods. Those people are getting many of the same benefits as running. We didn’t evolve these extraordinary brains and self-consciousness so we could outsource our thinking. Anybody who has done creative work knows what’s needed to do that is uninterrupted thought.
Of the many anecdotes you cite about bonding with others through running, which one was the most gratifying?
What can non-runners take away from your book?
Probably when I ran with William Greer, who I didn’t even know 24 hours before we ran the 2013 Boston Marathon, and by the end of that day we were friends forever because of all we went through together. [Greer is visually impaired and Sagal was his volunteer guide during the race.] We’re still in touch; we sometimes run together. He wouldn’t have finished if I wasn’t helping him and I wouldn’t have finished if he wasn’t helping me.
Go outside. We weren’t meant to spend so much time in offices. Take the headphones off, move, use your body. Look at little kids in playgrounds—they’re just running around before getting trained into games. We forget that. We spend so much time in our heads reading, watching screens. I’ve met people who say they don’t run, but they walk, ride bikes, hike in the woods. Those people are getting many of the same benefits as running.

TOXIC LEGACY
Breast Implant Warriors Unite Rawpixel.com/Shutterstock.com
by Linda Sechrist
T
he U.S. Surgeon General’s warning on cigarettes hasn’t prevented individuals from smoking, nor has the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) list of risks and complications associated with breast implants kept women from undergoing voluntary breast augmentation. Since 1997, the number of saline- and silicone-filled breast implant surgeries has tripled. According to the National Center for Health Research (NCHR), more than 400,000 women and teenagers undergo breast implant surgeries every year, with 75 percent for augmentation of healthy breasts and 25 percent for reconstruction after mastectomies. The marked increase in surgeries implanting these Class III “high risk” medical devices includes many women that undergo procedures to replace old implants that have broken or caused other problems. An estimated 40,000 U.S. women a year have the surgery to remove the implants entirely. These “explants” stem from a variety of issues, from rupture or delayed wound healing to broken implants that have caused breast pain, capsule contracture, spontaneous deflation, breast lesion, infection, wrinkling/ scalloping and necrosis. Another reason for removal is the growing concern about the reported incidence of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a treatable T-cell lymphoma, and breast 22
Miami-Dade/Florida Keys
implant illness (BII) associated with both silicone and saline implants. The FDA first sounded the alarm about the rare lymphoma in 2011, linking it to implants with textured, Velcro-like outer shells. In February, the federal agency issued a letter to healthcare providers seeking to increase awareness “about an association between all breast implants, regardless of filling or texture,” and BIAALCL. On the issue of BII and other problems reported by women with implants, the FDA has remained largely silent, suggesting that “studies would need to be larger and longer than these conducted so far.” However, the number of women with implants reporting health problems has prompted the FDA to demand that two manufacturers of the devices conduct proper long-term health studies. The agency sent out letters in March warning of deficiencies in FDA-required research and the possibility that their products could be taken off the market. The move is considered to be a victory for patient activism. Facebook.com/groups/ HealingBreastImplantIllness has become a sanctuary for more than 68,000 women that report a range of symptoms associated with BII. Nicole Daruda, of Vancouver Island, Canada, says she created the group to support women that visited her website, HealingBreastImplantIllness.com, where she told her personal BII story that began with
www.namiami.com
implant surgery in 2005. “I never anticipated an avalanche of women’s stories about the symptoms that I endured before having my explant surgery in 2015.” After hearing from other women, Daruda felt affirmed in her suspicions that implants had caused her fatigue, brain fog, memory loss, headaches, joint and muscle pain, hair loss, recurring infections, swollen lymph nodes, rashes, irritable bowel syndrome and problems with thyroid and adrenal glands. “I believe that various doctors pigeonholed my symptoms into the category of autoimmune disorders because few general practitioners are aware of BII.” Diana Hoppe, M.D., a board-certified OB/GYN in Encinitas, California, never heard of BII until earlier this year. “Doctors rely on published, evidence-based study results, and while there are none linking connective tissue disorders and breast implants, I suspect that the outcomes of studies conducted by breast implant manufacturers are equally as suspicious as the outcomes of studies done by the manufacturers of cigarettes.” One longtime BII combatant says, “My body mounted an all-out war, in the form of a foreign body immune response.” She learned about BII from Tinyurl.com/ BreastImplantIllness, but is unable to afford the explant surgery that would remove the apparently toxic invaders. NCHR reports that at the time of explant surgery, approximately three out of five women have had implants and their unhealthy symptoms for 10 years or more. After explant surgery, 89 percent of the women report improvement. However, explant surgery is just the first step. Daruda used chelation and the protocols of Gerson Therapy, a natural treatment that activates the body’s ability to heal itself through an organic, plant-based diet, raw juices, coffee enemas and supplements. “It took me four years to recuperate,” she says. “It didn’t take that long to know the lesson I wanted to share with other women: Self-love and self-worth are more important than society’s false concepts of beauty. The essence of who we are is not tied to any body part.” Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings. Connect at ItsAllAboutWe.com.

ne of the best ways to protect and preserve our precious eyesight is to focus on food. In general, the same plant-based, antioxidant-rich diets that defend against heart disease and cancer also contribute to eye health by reducing the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration—the two most common agerelated causes of vision loss. However, two specific nutrients— lutein and zeaxanthin—deserve special attention. These compounds uniquely concentrate in the macula, the centrally located part of the retina responsible for visual acuity, and are most vulnerable to oxidative damage from light exposure. Both are members of the carotenoid family, a large group of powerful antioxidant nutrients found mostly in fruits and vegetables, especially those with dark green, deep yellow, red and orange pigments. According to the National Eye Institute and the American Optometric Association, lutein and zeaxanthin help absorb damaging ultraviolet light from the sun, as well as blue light from computer screens, digital devices and LEDs. “Think of lutein as a sort of sunblock,” says Elizabeth Johnson, research associate

professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition and Science Policy at Tufts University, in Boston. Speaking at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics annual meeting in Washington, D.C., last fall, Johnson described the yellow macular pigments— lutein and zeaxanthin—as “internal sunglasses” that protect the eyes’ photoreceptor cells. “Yellow pigment absorbs blue light,” Johnson explains. The greater our macular pigment density, the more protection we have against light damage, and the better our visual function. As a bonus, macular pigment density also aligns with improved academic performance and cognitive function across our lifespan, reports Naiman Khan, Ph.D., a registered dietitian and director at the Body Composition and Nutritional Neuroscience Lab at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Because lutein is actively transported into breast milk, Johnson suspects the compound is important to infant eye and brain health. Despite solid scientific evidence confirming the benefits of lutein and zeaxanthin, there is no official recommended daily allowance. Johnson explains that Americans typically consume less than two milligrams
When it comes to eating for eye health, here’s some more insightful advice:
1
Eat the “rainbow”. Choose a variety of colorful, organic fruits and vegetables daily; they are rich in eye-protecting carotenoids, flavonoids and vitamin C. Whole grains, nuts and seeds provide vitamin E, and fatty, cold-water fish such as sardines, salmon, tuna and mackerel are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Vegan sources of omega-3s include walnuts, ground flax, hemp and chia seeds, or microalgae supplements.

per day, falling short of levels needed to enhance visual and brain function and slow the progression of age-related eye diseases. Her advice: Eat foods that provide between six to 10 milligrams of lutein and two milligrams of zeaxanthin each day. Dark green leafy vegetables, including kale, spinach and collard greens, provide the highest amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin, especially when cooked. For example, one cup of cooked kale or spinach delivers more than 20 milligrams of lutein and zeaxanthin, whereas one cup of raw spinach contains just under four milligrams. Johnson explains that cooking breaks down plant cell walls, making the carotenoids more bio-available. Plus, because lutein and zeaxanthin are fat-soluble, lower amounts found in avocadoes (0.4 milligrams in one medium fruit) are better absorbed. Further, simply adding an avocado or oil-based dressing to raw, dark leafy green salads will increase intestinal absorption. The same is true for egg yolks (0.2 milligrams per large egg). In a study of 33 older adults, published in The Journal of Nutrition, researchers found that consumption of one egg a day for five weeks significantly increased blood levels of lutein and zeaxanthin without raising cholesterol levels. According to the National Eye Institute and their Age-Related Eye Disease Studies (AREDS), additional nutrients that benefit eye health include vitamins C and E, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Cellular Memory and CranioSacral Therapy
Swedish massage, Thai massage and shiatsu are all ideal treatments for chronic pain, grief and emotional imprints locked within the body’s cellular consciousness. CranioSacral Therapy (CST) offers a gentler alternative. “CranioSacral Therapy can unravel cellular stories and assist in freeing repressed or preverbal emotions from childhood,” says Seattle-based CST therapist Barbara Coon. “Experiences are held in the body. Stress and muscular tension activate the vagus nerve, and CST focuses on calming [it].” The vagus nerve facilitates communication between the brain and the heart, lungs and gut. Coon attests to the modality’s body-centered support for reducing anxiety, depression, panic attacks, memory loss, sleep disturbances and grief. “Some people respond well to deep tissue work, while others do better with the gentleness of CranioSacral Therapy,” says Wheeler. “Like a perfect dance partner, a skilled bodywork practitioner follows the nervous system and helps the client access sources of trauma.”

Healing Frequencies
Clinical aromatherapy and therapeutic sound can also play a vital role in emotional healing, especially when combined with bodywork. Kelli Passeri, a massage therapist and owner of Sound and Stone Massage, in Pittsburg, Kansas, utilizes a subwoofer speaker beneath her massage table so clients can feel the vibrations of the music. “I play music recorded in specific frequencies that align with the body and the chakras or energy centers to help rebalance the energy body,” says Passeri, who also uses rose quartz crystals in her hot stone sessions. She relies on aromatherapy blends that promote opening on both physical and emotional levels. Passeri has observed common pain patterns in her clients that often don’t have a physical cause. “The sacrum tends to hold on to lifelong traumatic emotions from childhood, and the shoulders tend to reflect more current emotional blockages and issues,” she says, adding, “I encourage my clients to open up or cry because it’s a healthy thing to do. There’s no need for embarrassment and is totally okay.” Healing on any level might take time, but allowing the body’s stories to be witnessed without judgement is key. “The good news is that when trauma is worked through, the whole body is much more resilient and has a greater capacity to live life fully,” Wheeler says.

his Mother’s Day, I want to tell you about a different way to think about your mother and about yourself—a way that is deeply true and liberating, no matter what is going on with your mother. On a soul level, we’re old friends with our mothers. And they signed up for assisting us on our souls’ journeys big time—by being willing to take on the role of our mother. And no matter how well they did or didn’t do that job, we have a job, too: to realize that though we might not have had the mother we wanted, we all got the mother our souls needed. What’s more, every single one of us can connect right now with the mother energy that made all of our bodies in the first place—the Earth herself. It has been said that when you lavish your attention on the Earth—on a flower, or a stream or any aspect of nature—that energy loves you right back. In the book series The Ringing Cedars, Anastasia refers to the land you live on and love as, “Love dissolved in

space.” You can feel this when you travel to parks and gardens, farms and yards that have been loved by those who live there. This mothering energy is available to each of us from the Earth and from Mother Nature—no matter what has happened with your biological mother. So here is my prescription for a glorious Mother’s Day. Call your mother—in spirit, if she is no longer in a body—or if speaking with her directly is too painful. Here’s a special prayer: “With my Spirit, I send Divine Love to my mother’s Spirit.” That’s it. Just say this prayer. With your whole heart. And let go of the outcome. Happy Mother’s Day. Gardening for Kids The Fun of Growing Their Own
I
by Ronica A. O’Hara
t’s May, and the temperature is rising, as is the sap and green shoots. It’s the perfect time to involve kids in growing their own garden that will get them outdoors, teach them planning and perseverance, and develop their motor, literacy and scientific skills. A South Korean study found that gardening provides both high- and moderateintensity exercise for kids. It builds good eating habits, too: A British study of 46 9- and 10-year-olds found that they ate 26 percent more vegetables and fruit after growing a school garden, and a University of Florida study of 1,351 college students showed them more likely to eat veggies if they had gardened as children. For the most gratifying results, give kids a sense of ownership. “Let them make the decisions and be in charge of the care of the garden as much as developmentally possible,” advises Sarah Pounders, senior education specialist at KidsGardening.org, in Burlington, Vermont.
www.namiami.com
Getting Started
Order some seed catalogues, look online—or better yet, take a child to the local garden nursery. Let them decide what to grow. Their choices are as diverse as their interests. Veggies, flowers and plants that draw butterflies each have their own appeal. Some, like sunflowers, radishes and lettuce, are fast-growing, offering quick gratification. Or, they can choose a theme. “If your child likes Italian food, plant tomatoes and basil. If they enjoy Mexican food, then peppers and cilantro. For flowers—zinnias and cosmos—let them make flower arrangements from early summer into the fall,” suggests Susan Brandt, of Bristow, Virginia, co-founder of the gardening site BloomingSecrets.com. Visiting a plant nursery offers the perfect opportunity to put kids on the path to healthy living. Point out and discuss the differences between organic and nonorganic seeds and between chemical fertilizers containing Roundup—labeled “Keep Out
Kues/Shutterstock.com
of Reach of Children”—and organic fertilizers containing fish, seaweed and other natural nutrients.
Choose the Spot
A three-foot-by-three-foot plot is an ideal size for a child’s garden, as long as it gets lots of sunshine. If living in an urban area, go with pots of soil in a sunny window.
Get the Right Tools
For young kids with short attention spans, small plastic spades, rakes and hoes might work. But older kids need hardier tools. Get them properly fitted garden gloves, plus sunhats and sunscreen.
Plant the Seeds
Help them read and interpret the seed package directions, if necessary, and use a ruler to measure proper spacing. “I always try to have a mix of plants that start from seed and from transplants, so that kids can have both immediate and delayed gratification,” says Pounders.
Water, Weed and Mulch
Show them how to use the watering can or hose properly, usually watering only when the soil is dry to a depth of one inch. They can mix their own non-toxic pesticide out of vinegar and salt, and spread such organic mulches as straw, newspaper, grass clippings and leaves to discourage weeds.
Get Scientific
“They can look at the soil to see all the living creatures in it, which is especially fun
through a microscope,” says Dixie Sandborn, an extension specialist at Michigan State University. “They can learn about vermiculture by making a worm bin and feeding the worms their table scraps.” With a ruler, they can measure the growth of various plants and create a chart comparing rates. By taking photos or drawing pictures on a daily or weekly basis, they can compile an album, along with their commentary on weather patterns.
Have Fun
“Let them add personal touches like stepping stones, signs and other decorations that let them express their personality in their garden space,” says Pounders. Help them build a scarecrow, bird feeder, toad house, bird bath, sundial or a tent. Make a teepee or small enclosure and cover it with flowers, vines or climbing beans.
Harvest the Crop
After picking ripe vegetables, kids can find recipes and prepare snacks or a dish; arrange plucked flowers in vases and take photos; do craft activities with seeds, plants and flowers, like making potpourri or framing dried flowers; or throw a garden-themed party with favors that include herbs or seed packets. “You could have a ‘pa-jam-a’ party. Kids could wear their pajamas, pick berries, and make jam to take home,” suggests Sandborn. Ronica A. O’Hara is a Denver-based freelance health writer. Connect at OHaraRonica@gmail.com.

Essential Oils and Pets by Liz Morales
E
ssential oils have many benefits for your pets. They can help with calming emotions, soothing tired muscles and easing digestion to name just a few. As part of a wellness health program, they can actually help your pets live the best quality of life possible. Essential oils work with pets through the sense of smell, where the sensory olfactory cells are located. The olfactory system of animals has approximately 200 million olfactory receptors, compared with that of the human being that has approximately 45 to 50 million olfactory receptors. It is important to know that there are three ways to use essential oils: aromatically, topically and internally. Only essential oils certified as supplements can be used internally. Many Essential oils on the market may boast “100 percent pure” on the label, but they could contain substances that actually are quite toxic to animals and should be avoided. Before using any product with your pet and to secure the highest quality products, be sure your essential oils are third party tested and CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. The best way to start with your pet is with a small amount of a diffused or diluted essential oil. Then observe your pet’s behavior. As with any new thing, begin slowly and watch their reaction. The use of aromatherapy is considered an alternative therapy, which means that it does not replace the visit to the veterinarian. If you need to know more about essential oils and pets, don’t hesitate to do your research and learn more about it. Liz Morales, Aromatherapy, www.yogartmiamibyliz.com, 786-296-2636. May 2019

CBD FOR PETS What We Need to Know by Kajsa Nickels
W
ith the explosion of cannabidiol (CBD) products on the human medical scene, many pet owners are looking into this hemp plant derivative as a natural means of medicating their fourlegged family members. A study conducted by the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, in Ithaca, New York, found that CBD can be effective in treating some of the same ailments in pets as it does in humans. “I’ve used CBD on dogs and cats suffering from arthritis, anxiety and seizures,” says Angie Krause, DVM, a veterinarian with Boulder Holistic Vet, in Colorado. “I’ve even used CBD to treat cats with chronic respiratory infections.” Unlike CBD from marijuana, which in most cases is a Schedule I narcotic that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration considers highly subject to abuse, CBD from industrial hemp contains less than 0.3 percent of the psychoactive component THC. It is legal under federal law and can be sold nationwide, subject to state regulations. However, choosing the right CBD product is complicated by the number of confusing options. “There are so many products on the shelves with different concentrations and formulations,” says Krause, who considers the extraction method used during production to be one of the most important factors. She favors CO2 (carbon dioxide) extraction over solvent extraction methods: “CO2 leaves no residue behind that could harm the bodies of small animals such as dogs and cats.” 34

Within three days, it was like I had a new dog. She no longer destroys things, she is calm, she is more engaged with her environment. ~Cindy Hesse Stephen Cital, a veterinary technician in San Jose, California, co-founded the Facebook group Veterinary Cannabis Academy. He agrees that the purity of the extraction method is significant. He also notes that price is not necessarily an indicator of quality. “A 30-cc bottle of CBD could cost $70 at a concentration of 700 milligrams [7 mg per cc]. However, it’s possible to find the same volume at the same price at a concentration of 1,000 milligrams [10 mg per cc].” Some products don’t contain CBD at all, only hemp extract, Cital explains. “For people who don’t understand the labeling, this can be very misleading.” CBD is one of 104 cannabinoids found in both industrial hemp and marijuana plants. Full-spectrum hemp extracts contain the entire profile of cannabinoids, including trace amounts of THC. Broad-spectrum hemp extracts contain everything but the THC. Cital says
www.namiami.com
it’s always best to start with full- or broadspectrum products for the “entourage effect”, in which the cannabinoids work in concert. Isolates of additional cannabinoids can be added as needed, he says. When choosing a product to purchase for a pet, he recommends going with companies that are able to present the consumer with a certificate of analysis by a third party. “The certificate will show the complete profile of the CBD product, including cannabinoid, terpene, residual solvent, pesticide, bacteria, mycotoxin, fungicidal and elemental profiles,” he says. Cital notes that the elemental profile is especially important. “Hemp is very good at absorbing what is in its environment, including heavy metals such as lead.” Krause favors CBD products with minimal ingredients that “should be as simple as possible,” she says. “No xylitol, no artificial colors or sweeteners.” Cindy Hesse, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, also believes that CBD for pets should be as pure as possible. Her Cocker Spaniel, Reina, is both blind and deaf. Because of her handicaps, Reina experienced extreme anxiety to the point of destroying her metal crate, furniture and door frames. Reina’s vet put her on the antidepressant and antianxiety drugs Prozac and trazadone, but these only helped for a short period. After attending a CBD conference in Florida, her veterinarian decided to see if the compound might help the dog—his first patient to use CBD. The results, Hesse says, were amazing. “Within three days, it was like I had a new dog. She no longer destroys things, she is calm, she is more engaged with her environment. I recommend CBD oil to everyone I know who has a pet with health issues.” When deciding whether to give CBD to a pet, Krause and Cital recommend working with a veterinarian to ensure the proper dosage. “People can certainly work with CBD on their own with their pets,” says Krause, “but it’s important to get the dosing and concentration right to make it worthwhile.” Kajsa Nickels is a freelance writer and a music composer. Alternative Protocol for Treating Lyme Disease How Dr. Kristen Reihman M.D. found healing by Sheila Julson
A
fter experiencing bouts of Lyme disease during her residency, Dr. Reihman found holistic methods of healing and recovery, which she shares with patients today through her holistic practice in Allentown and her e-book. Dr. Reihman earned a bachelor’s degree in American Studies, with a minor in communications and film, in 1992 from Yale University. After graduation, she went to China to teach English. She enjoyed Chinese food and culture and learned about modalities such as herbal medicine and acupuncture. After one year in China, she contracted appendicitis and was transported to Hong Kong for an emergency appendectomy. “Being a foreigner in the middle of a health crisis was pretty shocking and eye opening,” she relates. “It made me realize how important it is to have a healing team that literally understands your language and your perspective.” When she returned to the United States, Reihman was at a crossroad and didn’t know what to do with her life. Through encouragement from her boyfriend during a crosscountry drive, she decided to go to medical school. She took pre-med classes and was accepted at Stanford School of Medicine, where
she graduated in 2004. She moved to Pennsylvania to do a residency in family medicine at Lehigh Valley Hospital. During that time, a tick bit her. Although she had no obvious symptoms of Lyme disease, as a precaution, she put herself on doxycycline and seemed to have no further problems. While still in residency, and after having her fourth child, Dr. Reihman became extremely fatigued. She contributed it to the fact that she was in her early 40s and had nursed her infant for an entire year, along with stress from starting a new job. She eventually realized that the Lyme disease contracted previously was recurring. She calls that second bout her Near Death experience; she spent 3 months in bed, lost 30 pounds and was unable to participate in her family life in any meaningful way. Through one of her patients also suffering from Lyme disease, Dr. Reihman learned about a whole realm of research and treatment options not taught in medical school. “I had a false belief that once you treat Lyme, it’s gone,” she says, “but I began to learn more about it on my patient’s behalf, and that turned out to change the trajectory of my entire professional life.” One of those options was chlorine dioxide, or CD, a man-made gas. Dr. Reihman says CD can either be ingested orally or
used topically as a way to oxidize and reduce the body’s pathogen load. Kerri Rivera, from whom Reihman learned about the effects of CD, has promoted is as a tool to reduce pathogens such as yeast, parasites, and heavy metals. Dr. Reihman says that CD eased her Herx reactions, or die-offs that can occur when treating Lyme. She notes that use of CD for healing purposes has been a bone of contention in mainstream and even integrative wellness arenas. “But as with any healing modality, any time you actively take apart pathogens, you creates inflammation which can temporarily make you feel worse. With good detoxification and drainage practices, you can avoid Herxing, or at least avoid the worst of it.” Dr. Reihman believes Lyme and other autoimmune issues respond best to integrative protocols including naturopathy, herbal medicine, oxidative therapies and nutritional practices. “I address not just issues that undermine recovery in the physical body, such as food allergies or leaky gut, but I also look at limiting beliefs and emotional blocks to healing. I like to think of our cells as little minions taking orders directly from our thoughts and feelings,” she says. As Dr. Reihman slowly got better, she decided that she wanted to be in an environment that promoted true healing and nurturing. In 2012, she left her job at the hospital and opened her own practice out of her living room. She instantly had a full patient roster comprised of people with chronic and acute Lyme, who wanted to learn about the tools she had used to recover herself, holistically. She shares her healing experiences in an informative new e-book, Life After Lyme: Revive Your Inner Rock Star and Achieve a Full Recovery, available at lifeafterlyme.net. The book covers every aspect of the complex disease. “It’s a comprehensive, D.I.Y recovery manual, and I also like to think it is like a supportive cheerleader on your healing team,” something she strives to be for every patient. Qi
The Force behind Blood Flow and Higher Intelligence
Interview with Qigong Practitioner Jeff Primack (Part 1 of 2) Conducted by Publisher Damon Damato
DD: Can you bring a Universal meaning to describe what is Qi?
DD: Is there significance to practicing Qigong in large groups?
JP: Qi is the electric life presence that beats the human heart and charges the air we breathe. Gong, like Gong Fu, is a repeated action to activate higher energy. Qigong generates a powerful magnetic field in the hands and this energy “dilates arteries”, healing what it touches. The effects of Qi are profound for increasing circulation and improving endocrine imbalances. Science will discover Qi is related to static electricity and can be harnessed with hand postures.
DD: Qi Revolution is coming to Kissimmee, Florida, for the National Event, June 22 to 24. What is your higher vision for sharing this kind of healing with a thousand people? JP: I believe when more human beings develop “Qi awareness”, human evolution will go higher. We hold our National Event once a year and transform a convention center into sacred space. 36
Miami-Dade/Florida Keys
Our intention is to experience the authentic healing and stress-dissolving practices of Qigong in a strong group energy field. Sound, light and Qi graphics are used to improve learning so everyone can feel what is going on without any previous experience. It’s rare that onethousand people all simultaneously inhale at the same second while holding the same healing prayer. Many people that attend heal old injuries and nearly everyone is strengthened by the energy. Our vision for this event is to uplift the group energy to the highest level to benefit all who attend.
www.namiami.com
JP: From 1980 to 1999, the Chinese people gathered for Qigong events inside arenas and stadiums with tens-ofthousands of people. Dr. Yan Xin led this first wave of Qi awareness with integrity, but other fake masters misused Qigong to protest the government and Qigong was banned in large group settings. Chinese people had discovered the secret of “group energy” and it went beyond the roar of a rock concert or the cheers in a football game. Qigong was a weekly outing in China for two decades and people viewed it as an opportunity to be strengthened and healed while enjoying fellowship with friends. Qi sensations and internal benefits reach into the scientific minds of truth-seeking men and women. Where two or more practice Qigong sincerely, there exists a larger living field of energy and I believe it’s stronger when more people practice.
DD: The breath work at the Qi Revolution is transformative. Since every
person is connected to it, do you believe the answers to healing and overcoming negative emotions are found here? JP: Breathing is the most powerful skill humans can learn to attune with the spirit of life. Genesis 2:7 reveals: “God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” After teaching Qigong breathing to groups large and small, I would say there is a connection. People report euphoric vibrational experiences when they do our Breath Empowerment, even if they don’t believe Qi exists. Breathwork is the best Gong Fu; repeated deep breaths will break the veil of darkness and bad thoughts, eventually flooding the body with light energy.
DD: Can one become more peaceful and increase awareness from the breath? JP: A renowned surgeon, Perrin Clark, MD, from Daytona Beach, Florida, recently attended our national event. He told us he was super-stressed from telling five patients (on average days) they had some type of cancer. Dr. Clark’s job was to give bad news to patients and this caused him to hold his breath a lot! He now reports his stress has gone down dramatically since attending Qi Revolution and learning Qigong. As a result, he attended our trainings and was certified in both our Qigong and Food Healing programs.
DD: There are a number of healing routines within the Qi Revolution experience. Do you need to be fit to participate? Can one receive healing attributes if they are out of shape, ill or have other physical impairments? JP: People with injuries often experience pain relief doing Qigong in the first morning practices.
DD: You perform a Global Healing Circle that is legendary. How does it connect participants using the 9-Breath Method with an expanded process? We are okay with people practicing where their body is at and provide modified postures for those who need special assistance. People of all ages can benefit from Qigong’s challenge.
DD: I’ve seen a shift over the past few years where your focus has really zeroed in on food healing, especially in regards to food science. Why do you feel this is so important in today’s world and how does it relate to one’s personal Qi? JP: Food is key to excellent health, especially natural foods made before the inventions of man. Kiwi, for example, helped to “reverse asthma” in hundreds of students I’ve counseled. Moreover, the prestigious medical journal, Thorax, indicates, children who eat Kiwi three to five times a week versus those who don’t eat any have a much lower incidence of asthma.* My theories have science to back them. Proof is really in whether or not God’s kiwi really helps people breathe. Evidence shows kiwi should be suggested by allergists and breathing therapists to help children with this disease. Food affects our Qi by becoming our blood and the cells which carry oxygen to our brain. I teach that eating red foods (high in carotenoids) is the best way to stop the oxidative processes responsible for heart disease and brain degeneration. We make smoothies and serve sweet red pepper paste to all attendees so they can taste for themselves how delicious natural foods can be prepared.
JP: The living electricity felt in the hands of the healing circle is unlike anything else we teach. After everyone is proficient in using the 9-Breath Method, our signature breathing technique, we hold hands while doing it many times. The feeling is like an electric current going through everyone’s legs, arms and hands. It feels so very good! Delicious, I might say. We focus our mind to God and ask for healing of people we love and send light to noble groups and nations worldwide.
DD: You have vowed from the beginning to keep the cost of Qi Revolution in reach for all people and have even gone as far as to offer this healing for veterans free of charge. You offer CE hours for massage therapists, nurses and counselors for an incredible value. Share with me the importance of putting people over profit. JP: Qigong is not only for rich or materially successful people. Qi Revolution is made affordable at $199/all three days, to open the qi door for more people. Massage therapists love the training and earn 24 CE hours. U.S. veterans attend free and each year hundreds have attended and many have become our best Qigong instructors. Mental and Emotional Healing through Yoga by Ghada Osman ase file: During my first psychotherapy session with Sarah she described experiencing symptoms of depression for over a decade. She had visited three other therapists beforehand, each asking her to describe her experience. But all Sarah could say was, “there’s nothing to talk about. I just feel blah.” Sarah left each visit feeling hopeless. So, I asked her, what in your body tells you that you’re experiencing depression? “Like I said,” she replied listlessly, “I just feel blah. I don’t feel anything.” I invited Sarah to pay attention to her body, asking her how her torso, arms and legs felt? She paused, and then began to cry while sharing, “there’s like a big rock in my chest. My arms and legs feel heavy.” Now, reach the crown of your head up towards the ceiling, I guided. She did, transforming her previously slumped torso into a

straighter spine. Roll your shoulders up and back, breathe in, and press your feet onto the floor, I continued. Breathe out and relax your shoulders. Then asked her to do this twice more. Something shifted in Sarah’s face. “That feels different,” she noted, with the first hint of animation in her voice, “It’s like the rock in my chest is a little smaller.” As far back as the 1880s, William James, the Father of American Psychology, argued that emotion is the interpretation the mind gives to physical sensation. For example, we feel an elevated heartbeat, and in a split second, our mind calls that fear. In his book Descartes’ Error (2005) neuroscientist Antonio Damasio notes how we use physical cues such as changes in skin color, body posture, and facial expression as information about a person’s emotions. But, like Sarah, most of us have not been trained to notice our physical sensa-
www.namiami.com
tions. Instead, we pay attention only to our thoughts and our stories, replaying them in our minds and often exacerbating our challenging emotions. But while this can bring insight, insight does not necessarily result in change. How many of us know someone who realizes that changing a behavior would lead to greater health and well-being, but has a hard time doing it? Along similar lines, telling someone to calm down when anxious or angry rarely has the desired effect, and often that suggestion increases the person’s irritation. Deeper involvement with the body is usually necessary to shift emotion. That can be through movement, as we saw in the example with Sarah above, or through breath. For example, extending the exhale stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system associated with resting and digesting, and leading to greater calm. Yoga is a practice that combines body and breath for change. If you are less familiar with yoga, you might think of it as an activity that emphasizes physical flexibility. But in fact, yoga is not about the outward form at all. According to the central classical texts of yoga, the Yoga Sutras, yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind. Yoga helps to build physical strength, flexibility and balance. But it also helps to build psychological and emotional strength, flexibility, and balance. And just like any approach to healing, pursuing yoga for mental wellness should be carried out under the auspices of a specialist: in this case a psychotherapist or yoga professional who has been trained in working with yoga for mental health specifically, in order to create a customized, well-informed plan for emotional healing. Ghada Osman, Ph.D., LMFT, C-IAYT, E-RYT 500, is a psychotherapist, certified yoga therapist, yoga teacher, and author of Mental and Emotional Healing through Yoga: A Guiding Framework for Therapists and their Clients (Routledge, 2018). Options in Anti-Aging
A
ge management is one of the fastestgrowing trends in medicine in the U.S and Cenegenics was one of the most, if not, the most popular anti-aging clinic in the United States that focuses on nutrition and hormone optimization therapy. They were the godfather clinic who started paving the way for the hormone replacement therapy world and made this whole industry what it is today. Unfortunately, it was mostly for high end or celebrity type of clientele because of the cost and distance restriction they had at the time. Today, age management or aka “antiaging” treatments are more popular than ever before as an increasing number of baby boomers look for alternative solutions to help them regain or retain their health and vitality. Anti-aging science like hormone replacement therapy isn’t just for older adults. Young men and women as old as 30 years of age (or older) could potentially start a preventative approach towards their health, so they can continue looking and feeling as great as possible for as long as possible. Note, all of this could be determined after a comprehensive analysis of the patient’s blood and current physical status. Cenegenics and what Medical Health Institute can offer you. Cenegenics were known for their age management program which contained four components to it: telomere testing, heart disease prevention, a personalized
hormonal plan, and supplements. (Note: this is not necessarily the exact order on which they may go about their 4-step process). First, a Cenegenics telomere test is done which measures your biological age from your chronological age and which tells the physician a patient’s real age and how fast or rate your cells are aging. Second, they address if there is a stroke and heart disease risk to see if you are a good candidate for therapy. Third, they set you up with a personalized program to address any concerns with supplements and exercise plan. Fourth, a tailored hormonal therapy program is made for you. The Medical Health Institute offers every single step Cenegenics does and more, but with the free will of picking different packages. Some patients are more serious or dedicated to their health than others, so for some, the telomere test or supplements might not be as crucial as for another. So we provide different options to the patient depending on their goals and financial means. The point is that we help as many people as we can, with the same quality of service but without compromising our integrity. As a Cenegenics patient, you may be advised to purchase very expensive private supplement and hormone formulations that may cost between $500 to $1000 per month. Cenegenics hormone replacement therapies can add thousands of dollars to your monthly costs and on top of all of this, a monthly medical fee that may be up to $800. At the Medical Health Institute, our treatments are at the same level and quality of purity but without private labeling which makes it substantially more affordable to the patient. All these minor details (private labeling) that take away from the patient’s checkbook, we made sure to take them out and be as transparent as possible with the patient, so they can go home knowing they got a great deal on any of our hormone, supplement, or aesthetic treatments.
While Cenegenics is a recognizable brand, it isn’t the only option. Wellness clinics and doctors like the ones at the Medical Health Institute, now focus on advanced age management protocols to help patients optimize their quality of life and prevent age-related disease like Diabetes and heart disease. If you’re feeling tired or not at your best and happened to be interested in revitalizing your health with testosterone and/or human growth hormone programs, it’s essential to get hormonally checked and screened first. If needed, an excellent anti-aging plan is customized to your needs, general health, risk factors, and hormone levels. Depending on your situation, a treatment plan may include a nutrition plan, an exercise recommendation, stress management videos, targeted nutritional supplementation, and a personalized hormone replacement optimization therapy. Good bio-identical hormonal therapies are based on calculated science, rather than on high or hard to see fees. The alternative to Cenegenics is the Medical Health Institute. If you would like to get on a life-changing treatment and want the same quality of service, then give us a call and book an appointment with us. We are determined to heal and help everyone who is committed to improving and optimizing their life. Two locations in Dade County: South Miami at 8585 Sunset Drive, and North Miami at 13499 Biscayne Blvd., Ste. 106/C. You are invited to call and speak directly with one of the doctors about what you are experiencing and see how they can help. 786-264-1141. See ad, page 29.

Not All Who Wander Are Lost Y our body is a temple. How many times have we all heard this phrase? Nonetheless, let’s push the notion aside and be real for a moment. Consumed are people’s lives by the mundane daily motions of routine and old habits. For women, their lives become a hectic schedule entwining work, children, marriage, household duties, and self-maintenance (if there’s a moment to spare). Within such tight constraints, when can one practice self-love? What happens when women finally reach a breaking point and decide that enough is enough?
The Sacred Moments of Nirvana Gone are the days where women deny their sexuality. Such a seemingly taboo subject once omitted from society has since developed into a positive topic culminated by podcasts, television, and music. Alas, the topic now allows women the pleasure they so desire. Yet, for those who still feel lost or yearning for more, where can they turn? Yoni Wanderland Curated to help women get in touch with their sexuality, deepen their essence of sexual connection and experience their true desires, Nathalia Gilek created Yoni Wanderland. Bearing in mind that being healthy goes beyond what we eat and what we put on our skin, this groundbreaking concept truly shines the light on our Yoni (or our most sacred space). “People focus more on the physical, but when you start being appreciative of 40

the good things that you have, you learn to appreciate being a woman in a whole new light. Working with crystals brings that confidence and provides the power of loving oneself.” - Nathalia Gilek, Founder of Yoni Wanderland. From the use of pleasure wands and Yoni eggs, women are finally tapping into a cosmic feeling of truly owning and gaining control of their sexual prowess—and this is just the beginning. Imagine floating in a sea of pleasure, full of a euphoric mind, body, and spirit. Sounds heavenly, right? Yoni Wanderland proves that it’s more than possible for women to feel this way as often as they please. Starting with merely an egg or wand, women now have the full reigns to self- pleasure. Love Yourself First Love isn’t just a feeling; it’s so much more than that! We’re all in the pursuit of happiness, but practicing self-care, healing, and maintaining positive emotions of oneself is always vital. Finally, women are reclaiming their feminine power and enhancing their sexual energy. Take Yoni eggs for example. Yoni (womb or the female genitals in Sanskrit), is also about finding and uniting women with their bodies. These eggs date back to ancient China, where only the royal family was permitted to use them. Now available to the general public, more and more individuals are taking advantage of this golden opportunity to please themselves. Origi-

Are They Safe? It’s okay to ask because it’s on everyone’s mind: will the Yoni egg get stuck? Handcarved from pure, 100% GIA certified crystals shaped and polished to a silky, smooth texture, the eggs are a safe and natural choice to use—both internally and externally. They even come in three different sizes; the larger eggs are for beginners or women who have recently given vaginal birth while the smaller ones are for more well-experienced individuals. And they’re beneficial for women of all ages. Furthermore, Yoni Wanderland’s intimate gems are free of dyes, phthalates, chemical-laden plastics, and jelly rubbers. Cheers to An Awakened Sexuality Women everywhere can now heal themselves by experiencing the aphrodisiac force within crystals, whether through Yoni eggs, a pleasure wand, or beyond. Better yet, they can heal themselves using their sexual power within and experience the power of pure, self-satisfied bliss. A Briefing on IV Vitamin (Nutritional) Therapy
by Emmanuela Wolloch, MD, FACOG

ntravenous, or IV Nutrient Therapy is a method of feeding vitamins, minerals and other natural substances directly into a person’s bloodstream. Bypassing the digestive system is the main advantage of IV nutrition. When substances are given orally, they must be processed through the stomach and intestines. Many substances may be rendered inactive in the digestive tract or may not be well absorbed due to poor intestinal functions. By directly administering nutrients to the body via the intravenous route, higher than normal blood levels can be achieved. These increased levels can provide an immediate therapeutic response by correcting deficiencies. Scientific research has demonstrated that a variety of conditions can benefit from the use of IV nutrition. A few of the conditions that may be helped using these techniques are fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, chronic fatigue, insomnia, the common cold, leaky gut syndrome, depression, anxiety, symptoms of menopause and colds and flus. While benefits include
One of the most important minerals in your body, as it’s used by nearly every cell and organ, especially your heart, muscles and kidneys. A study published in the Journal of Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism confirms magnesium chloride’s positive effects on insulin sensitivity.
B Vitamins.
Water Soluble; there are eight well known B-vitamins that play a role in the body. They support metabolism and contribute to the body’s ability to produce energy. They also have individual functions as well.
Amino Acids. improved skin quality, improved hydrations, increased energy, regulations of the immune system, and shortened recovery times for athletes.
Who can benefit?
Everyone! Today, most people are under chronic stress, lacking in sleep and proper nutrition. Many feel run down, tired and could be in pain. Some are not performing at the gym or in other sports activities as they had been or would like to. Nutritional IV therapy is a great way to address any deficiencies one may have in vitamins or minerals to reach optimal nutrient levels and hydration.
What is in it?
Some of the main ingredients that could be prescribed are:
Vitamin C.
Vitamin C or L – ascorbate is an essential nutrient that is required for a wide range of metabolic reactions in all animals and plants. It is made internally by almost all
Amino acids are organic compounds that combine to form proteins. Amino acids and proteins are the building blocks of life. They are vital in promoting wound repair and encouraging healthy tissue in muscles, bones, skin and hair. IV Nutrient therapy is a way to get vitamins, amino acids, minerals and other nutrients into the bloodstream quickly without needing the digestive system. Using an IV to administer nutrients allows the maximum concentration to reach tissues for absorption that need it the most. All treatments should be specifically evaluated, and a protocol developed for each individual and prescribed by a Medical Doctor. Nest Evolution When Parents Come Home by Ariana Rawls Fine
F
amily dynamics evolve over time and living arrangements often do as well. It is common that family decisions are made for parents or a parent to move into an adult child’s home. There are physical, emotional, design and energetic aspects to be considered to make this transition as successful as possible. “These are discussions that should take place well ahead of time to better plan, better deal with the changes emotionally and not under duress. By doing so, decisions and plans are well-executed rather than temporary fixes that make the space visibly and emotionally harder to navigate,” says Colin Healy (ColinHealyDesign.com), a Stratford-based home designer and certified aging in place specialist. 42
Miami-Dade/Florida Keys
Planning ahead includes how the family will accommodate the elder parent and their visitors as time goes on. Although a parent may be fully independent now, visiting friends may have mobility challenges. Making design changes before reaching the point of immediate need also enables the family to ensure they are getting quality and matching hardware, flooring and structure changes such as grab bars.
Regulations and Zoning
Many towns will have regulations for size to have a family member live in the house with a separate kitchen unit, Healy explains. An accessory dwelling unit (ADU), also known as an “in-law” apartment is allowable for separate generations living in
www.namiami.com
a house as long as they are related. Healy warns that setting it up this way and then using the space as a rented apartment can get a homeowner into trouble. He says in Connecticut the zoning favors larger parcels of property rather than encouraging apartments in single dwelling areas. Currently towns generally discourage detached dwelling units such as tiny houses. One of Healy’s first questions to clients is whether they want the new space to be an independent unit with a kitchen or an addition with an accessible bathroom, bedroom and laundry on the first floor. Another design and zoning detail to be figured out is if another access point is needed to accommodate a ramp. This can be another front or back door, or a porch. Healy warns that some towns, such as Fairfield, do not allow two doors on the front of a house. In that town a design would need to include additional access points from a garage, breezeway, or a side or back door.
Accessibility
This is a key area for in-depth discussion
Homes are not required to follow ADA guidelines for accessibility, but they are the guidelines that actually work and design. How will the person move from and to living areas, bathrooms, kitchen and laundry areas? Although there may not be an immediate accessibility issue, it is critical to plan for the future. For instance, at the time of moving in the parent may still be able to handle five steps to get inside, but there needs to be a plan for when a ramp is needed. Do now what is difficult later to redo by preparing for the different phases, Healy says. Other examples are a larger doorway for a wheelchair, the space to put in a ramp, and an accessible shower and toilet. “Homes are not required to follow ADA guidelines for accessibility, but they are the guidelines that actually work,” Healy explains. One guideline regarding toilet placement is key in building an adaptable space for a parent. By placing the toilet next to a shower with a flat floor, the person gains over two feet of uninterrupted wall space to transfer from a wheelchair to the toilet. Select a wall-hung sink from the beginning of the design that allows space for the wheelchair to fit under.
Visitability and Visibility
It is likely that aging loved ones may have friends with mobility needs. Accommodating their potential needs enables the parent to have a more extensive social circle. This may mean ensuring that thresholds between rooms are level to avoid floor level changes and tripping hazards. From a décor perspective, rugs can be obstacles for wheelchairs and may trip those unsteady on their feet. Healy says making design and structure changes in a hurry can devalue a house, which is more reason to plan proactively. For instance, if a ramp is needed, better planning could mean using a garage entrance, which would be more easily removable later. “With accessibility to the unit planned before, it makes things
Intention and Harmony Applying Feng Shui to a New Space
J
udie Ricciardi of Put It Together (PutItTogetherLLC.com) recommends intentionally setting up the harmony and balance in the evolving home as part of the design process. An interior designer and feng shui practitioner, when planning she uses the Compass School’s form of the bagua, the lo shu magic square. She recommends drawing a three-by-three-part square as can be seen in the image on this page. The most important place to start is at #1, which is usually the front door. “This is where all the abundance or means of supporting yourself comes in,” Ricciardi says. “It should be a grounded place to start with a dark door color of door. When you open the door, you should face another dark color as well as water feature like a picture of water or a water fountain to invite money and abundance into your life.” When considering adding an addition to an existing home, the #2 area is one of the more beneficial areas in which to do so because this enhances the area of relationships. The #4 area is also preferred as it focuses on wealth. This part of the square can be helped with blues, purples and greens. As design decisions are being made, if a kitchen area is being added, the #5 area of health is optimal. Avoid placing a bathroom in a #2 or #4 corner as it implies that wealth and relationships area “going down the drain.” In regards to bed placement for the parent, the head of the bed should ideally not be lined up with the bedroom door. They should be able to see the door but not have their feet pointing toward it. Other ways to enhance the space is to put something red in the #9 fame space, pictures of family on the wall or on a bureau in the #3 ancestor area, and a den, library or even a bookshelf in the #8 knowledge space. In addition, pictures of family in the #7 children space and warm yellow color in the #5 health area can help.

At the point you decide to bring a new person into the home, you need to create the space by choosing what items they want to bring with them.
that will be eyesores less visible, which, in turn, increases curb appeal for everyone in the living space,” Healy says. Another option is using the zero-entry concept by using hard and soft landscaping as a way to bring people from the yard level to the main grade of the house. Examples include a winding path to a doorway or a natural ramp made with pavers.
Emotional Aspect of Designing
There is a tendency to focus on the logic and logistics of evolving space, but both the parent and the adult son or daughter (as well as the other live-in family members) need to have mental and emotional flexibility to adapt to the new life, says Betsy Cameron, an interior designer and owner of Westport-based Seva Interiors (SevaInteriors.com). There is a shift of roles as the offspring tries to parent so dynamics necessarily must shift. Cameron combines elements of design psychology and personal growth in her work with clients, touching on the emotional hurdles 44

of someone who is the provider and then becomes the dependent. They need to relinquish their old role but be able to take care of themselves for as long as possible in the new space. “At the point you decide to bring a new person into the home, you need to create the space by choosing what items they want to bring with them,” explains Cameron. There can be emotional attachment to furniture and guilt around letting it go to get something in place that serves them better now. “When we look at the possibility of the space and change, we can look optimistically at the use of space. We can turn the change into a proactive adventure rather than a traumatic emergency,” Cameron suggests. Try to give them space that fits them rather than incorporating them into the design of the home, Cameron says. Be sensitive to the familiarity and connection they have to their personal belongings and spaces. It is important for them to
www.namiami.com
feel comfort and comfortable in their own space. How can the space be set up so they can function independently for as long as possible? There is also a ripple effect in the family, similar to a new baby coming home, Cameron explains. It is necessary to recognize and respect that everyone has a different rhythm or pace. Designing a space where family members can converge but also move back to their own spaces is key. That could mean placing living quarters away from the kitchen hub where family congregates and away from the smells of cooking. Find ways to acoustically dampen noise, such a subtle sound machine/wave noises, upholstered furniture or curtain. Another suggestion Cameron makes is to not have activities set up right outside their space, such as a homework area next to their door. From a design standpoint, there are many indoor/outdoor performance fabrics that help with spills so that the parent can actively live in the space. Consider the type of materials too, such as softer pieces to grab on to that are also sturdy and steady; maybe it would be best to use an ottoman rather than coffee table in case of a fall. Remember that clear access flow is needed so keep spaces simply furnished, Cameron recommends. “Change sparks opportunity to release, reflect and realign with who you are and how you want to live,” Cameron says. “We resist that this is where we are and that our life is changing. Natural Strategies for Staying Sharp How a Healthy Brain Avoids Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer’s by Nicole Klughers
F
rom students to seniors, having a sharp mind is greatly valuable. Thoughts, experiences and senses drive our mental state in a process called cognition. Our cognition involves memory and learning— allowing for the successful completion of everyday tasks, making decisions and understanding information. Having minor memory shortfalls that do not significantly impact daily functioning is termed mild cognitive impairment (MCI). According to the Alzheimer’s 46
Miami-Dade/Florida Keys
Association, it is estimated that up to 20 percent of people over 65 years of age have MCI, and people with MCI are much more likely to develop dementia. Dementia involves serious deviations in memory, personality changes or compromised reasoning which interfere with the ability of an individual to live independently. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, and every 65 seconds an American is diagnosed with this disease. In a study published in The Lancet in 2017, “Dementia Prevention, Intervention
www.namiami.com
and Care”, it was estimated that two out of every three cases of dementia could be prevented through natural health strategies. A natural approach to improve life-long cognitive function involves reducing risk factors and optimizing health through natural medicines and lifestyle adjustments. There are various aspects of our health and wellness which influence the ability to attain and maintain a sharp mind.
Physical Activity
Individuals with high body mass index (BMI) are more likely to develop dementia
than those with normal weight, according to a 2018 Alzheimer’s & Dementia study of 1.3 million individuals. Confirmed by abundant evidence, physical activity improves cognition in people of all ages, increases memory in older adults and results in anti-aging changes to the brain structure. Cardiorespiratory activity includes any movement that increases breathing and heart rate, such as speed walking, jogging, running, martial arts, swimming, rowing, boxing, skiing, snowboarding, dancing or biking. Engaging in two hours of moderate cardiorespiratory activity per week can help to protect memory and cognition.
Sleep
Sleep is essential for healthy cognitive function. Extensive research published in Sleep journal in 2017 reveals that individuals with trouble sleeping have almost double the risk of cognitive impairment, and estimates that 15 percent of AD may be a result of sleep problems. Identifying and addressing the cause of sleep disturbances is preferable to sleep medications,
since the majority of prescription and overthe-counter sleep medicines are associated with increased incidence of dementia. Between seven and eight hours of nightly sleep has shown to reduce risk of chronic diseases like dementia. Practicing good sleep hygiene is crucial in fulfilling these recommendations. Good sleep hygiene includes having a regular bed time, avoiding eating meals or viewing any screens at least two hours prior to sleep and sleeping in a completely dark room. For occasional sleeplessness, there are a number of natural remedies which also support healthy mental status. Glycine is a compound with plenty of anti-aging benefits and roles in brain and immune function. Glycine is made in the body, yet intake may also come from food sources or a supplement. Three grams of glycine amino acid supplementation prior to bedtime has been shown to increase sleep quality, as well as memory and daytime alertness. Studies found honey to have brainprotective and memory supporting properties. One teaspoon of raw honey, before
bedtime, can also aid in the production of sleep-assisting hormones such as serotonin and melatonin, and minimize nighttime wake-ups. Melatonin is not only essential for restful sleep, but also has strong protective properties for brain cells. Melatonin supplementation has been found to be especially helpful in those with mild cognitive impairment or AD.
Nutrition
Nutrition is required for everyday bodily functions and research also demonstrates that nutrition is useful in both the treatment and long-term prevention of disease. Although fresh vegetables and fruits are essential to maintain cognitive health, so are healthful dietary fats. Sixty percent of the human brain consists of fat. The type of dietary fat determines the influence on cognitive and overall health. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats have shown to have the greatest benefit on cognition. sources include nuts (almond, cashew, hazelnut, pecan, pistachio, walnut), seeds (chia, flax, hemp, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower), olive oil, some fish (anchovies, herring, trout, salmon, sardines) and avocado. According to studies in The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease, a diet high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats has been found to enhance learning, slow cognitive decline and reduce the risk of AD.
Herbal Medicine
Similar to nutrition, herbs have many therapeutic applications. Herbal medicine can be consumed in the form of teas, pills, liquid extracts or used in cooking. There are a large number of herbal medicines that have been studied for their positive effects on cognitive function. As with all herbal medicines or dietary supplements, consult with your practitioner for safe usage and individualized dosing recommendations. Withania somnifera (ashwagandha) is widely known for its stress-relieving properties, yet research in Journal of Dietary Supplements finds ashwagandha also aids memory in those with MCI, increases attention and enhances the ability to process information. Many studies have shown that Curcuma longa (turmeric) plays a role in the prevention and treatment of AD by enhancing cognition through various cell-protecting, inflammation-reducing and toxin-eliminating properties. In addition, Bacopa monierri and Ginkgo biloba have been studied for memory boosting benefits. Research reveals Cannabis sativa (hemp) to have extensive brain regenerative properties, contributed to its medicinal parts, including cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabinoids.
Cholesterol & Hormonal Balance
About 25 percent of the body’s cholesterol is found in the brain. Cholesterol is made in the liver and required to build every human cell and hormone. Hormones are chemical messengers which influence our ability to think clearly and remember information. Having blood cholesterol levels that are too low can result in a measurable loss in cognitive functioning. When reviewing data from the Framingham Heart Study, individuals with the lowest levels of cholesterol had the poorest memory and concentration. 48
Miami-Dade/Florida Keys
www.namiami.com
Declines in hormones such as estrogen and testosterone are associated with cognitive decline, whereas elevations in the stress hormone called cortisol are associated with poorer cognitive function. Also known as the “anti-aging” hormone, lower amounts of a hormone called pregnenolone is associated with AD. A hormone called DHEA-S, the “youth hormone”, supports various functions in the brain, including brain cell protection and regeneration. A study in The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology found that low DHEA-S has been seen in those with cognitive impairment. It may be helpful to have hormonal assessment through blood or salivary tests. If cholesterol is elevated, more detailed blood tests are available to determine the particular type of cholesterol, as this relates to disease risk. There are many natural strategies which serve to re-establish both cholesterol and hormonal balance to improve mental functions and prevent cognitive decline.
Environmental Toxins
The exposure to environmental toxins is inevitable. Aluminum, cadmium, lead and mercury are some of the most common toxic metals associated with cognitive decline. Long-term exposure to moderate air pollution was found to damage brain structures and impair cognitive function, in a 2012 study in Archives of Internal Medicine. Utilizing a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration and water purification system can help to reduce exposure to some environmental toxins. Other ways to reduce exposure to environmental toxins include: minimizing dietary intake of high mercury-containing fish (tuna, swordfish, tilefish, mackerel, bluefish, shark), avoiding tobacco use and using glass or stainless-steel cookware instead of aluminum. Testing of toxic metals can be done with urine or hair samples, and a variety of natural therapies exist to support improved elimination of toxins from the body.
Take Action
Just like our body, our mind requires proper care for longevity. There are many aspects of health which influence cognition, some of which were briefly reviewed in this article. Physicians can assist in identifying risk factors for cognitive decline such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, depression, anxiety, hypothyroidism or chronic stress. Naturopathic physicians implement natural therapies and encourage beneficial lifestyle habits, which show promising results in prevention and treatment of cognitive decline. The Details Name: Stinging Nettles (Urtica dioica) Parts Used: the whole plant, downy with tiny hairs that sting Where Found: Nettles are found in most temperate regions and seem to follow man’s migrations. Nettles can indicate a soil rich in nitrogen.
NETTLES Good for the Garden and Good for Us
by Judith Dreyer
W
hen the cold and chill of winter begins to soften and the sun’s rays strengthen, we start to notice the first buds on trees, and some flowers poke up like the beginnings of a soft symphony. One of the first plants to arrive on sturdy stems is the nettle, commonly known as stinging nettle. Bright green parts poke up at the beginning of spring, offering nourishment both for us and our soils. Nutritious and hardy, this perennial offers us nutrients, fiber, food, cordage and is a ready and willing partner in the soil ecosystem. Their reputation to “sting” makes many wary of this plant, yet they are a powerhouse of nutrients. In biodynamic farming, nettle is a major player in composting. Biodynamic farming, founded by Rudolph Steiner, encourages its farmers to use nettles in a preparation called BD504, which, he says, “plays a huge role in resolving soils with an imbalance of iron, magnesium and sulfur.” 50
Miami-Dade/Florida Keys
According to Steiner, “Excess iron can cause many problems and often presents itself in the form of very tight soil with hardpan or crust. This tightness locks in the iron and other trace minerals, which in turn exacerbates the problem. BD504 preparation loosens the soil texture, allowing the nutrients to release, disperse and be absorbed by plants.” Nettles contain formic acid, phosphorus and a trace of iron. The square and downy stems are covered with tiny, sharp spikes that release an acrid fluid when touched, much like a bee sting. Interestingly, the juice of the crushed nettle leaves can be rubbed on the sting for relief. The sting reminds us to quiet down and approach them with respect. Each of these spikes or spines is composed of small cells that contain this fluid. Once dried or cooked, the sting is neutralized, and it makes for a nutritious potherb (an herb that can be added to a pot of soup or stew) or tea.
www.namiami.com
Young Shoots: Nettles are best gathered in the early spring when they are less than one foot tall. Later in the season, they get gritty and accumulate crystals called crystoliths that make them unpalatable to eat. The young shoots are gathered to harvest, wash, cook and eat that day, or to make a pot of tea with the fresh herb, then dry the rest for later use, to include tea making. Stems: Nettles have been valued for their fiber. Some herb schools include separating out the fibers within the stems that are cut in late summer and dried. Cordage can be woven for later use. Historically, this fiber was also used in clothing, sailcloth and sacking material. Want to add nettles to your garden? Select a fairly sunny spot, perhaps outside your garden. These plants are quite hardy and, as a perennial, they will keep coming back and spread. They grow to about 3 or 4 feet tall and can create a border. Seeds are available if you can’t find a neighboring gardener willing to share. There are many seed sources online, including Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company, offered at Comstock Ferre & Co, in Wethersfield. Whether you’re a biodynamic farmer or backyard gardener, nettles offer so much. Handled with respect and care, this one plant contributes to the soil ecosystem, adding nutrients as well as strengthening our biology. Nettle helps us make the metabolic changes from winter to spring. Water Birth,
Nettle Recipes
Nettles are good for the health of our bodies and our gardens. Here’s how to make a “tea” for your plants, which delivers minerals for healthy soil, and a tea for you, plus ideas for using the herb dried in other dishes. For the Garden: Compost Tea As the stems get taller, cut and place in a 5-gallon bucket, about 2/3 full. Fill bucket about 3/4 full of water. Let sit but stir frequently for about 3 weeks. At the end of three weeks, add about 1 Tbsp to 1/4 cup molasses or organic brown sugar, and let it ferment a bit. This fermenting tea smells, but don’t let that deter or fool you. This garden tea is packed with minerals so needed in soil building. When done, dilute the tea 1:10, 1-part tea to 10 parts water. Give each plant a cupful. You can also dilute the tea 1:20, 1-part tea to 20 parts water, and use as a foliar spray, which can help deter bugs and even fungi, such as powdery mildew. At the end of the season, cut plants back to the ground and add to the compost pile.
For the Body: Nettles as a Potherb and/or Tea Gather tender aerial parts in spring. Wearing gloves to avoid stinging, wash and chop nettles. Place about one handful in a pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and simmer for a couple of minutes. Strain out the nettles and drink the tea water. You can then add those greens to rice, veggies and pasta dishes. Don’t forget to dry some of these tender pieces to make tea later on, but also to add the dried and cut plant material like you would add dried oregano to soups and stews in fall and winter.
Water Immersion and Hydrotherapy by Maggie Wardlaw
W
e all know how amazing getting into the tub or whirlpool feels when you are sore or achy. If I could count the hours spent near women laboring in the tub it would be a large beautiful number. I never thought that after twenty years of practice a statistic like that would be interesting, but I am reflecting and thinking how useful it would be on paper. My first water birth was at Special Beginnings Birth a Women’s Center in Arnold, MD in 1997. The Mom was young, strong, beautiful and brave. She powered through labor with her young loving husband supporting her. They were so certain and strong together and I knew this baby was going home in amazing hands. I think back to that birth often because I still see it as clearly as if was yesterday. I’ve attended to many women in labor but always feel that the women in water are so calm, strong and relaxed at the same time. It’s beautiful to behold but it isn’t for everyone. Waterbirths is reserved for low risk, healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies. Personally, I spent hours in the tub with each of my three labors and it was calming and relieving, and with my partner and Certified Nurse Midwives everything that I needed. I could have birthed in the water but my inner instinct told me to get out of the tub and move each time before the baby came so flexibility is key to accept in labor. Birth outside of the water was what suited me at that moment and the Certified Nurse Midwife supported me. When researched hydrotherapy is equally as effective as intravenous pain medication but without side effects. Michel Odent began the water birth movement in a state hospital near Paris in 1977. Since then Odent, known as the father of the water birth, has created a wealth of knowledge and research about water birth, water immersion and hydrotherapy in labor. “If we want to find safe alternatives to obstetrics, we must rediscover midwifery. To rediscover midwifery is the same as giving back childbirth to women. And imagine the future if surgical teams were at the service of the midwives and the women instead of controlling them.”-Michel Odent. I’m personally and professionally forever thankful. I have enjoyed the hum of the whirlpool and pouring warm water over beautiful gravid abdomens. Many providers do not get to experience this in their career. Maggie Wardlaw is a Certified Nurse Midwife in Coral Gables and has delivered thousands of babies over the last 20 years. Demystifying Addiction
How to Mitigate Common Risk Factors by Nadia Noori
A
ddiction is so common in our society that most people have battled it themselves, or have someone close to them who has struggled with it. While addictions to drugs—both prescription and illicit—and alcohol are most commonly talked about, addiction can stretch to anything, including food, exercise, sex, sugar and even technology. Many different things can lead to addictive tendencies that usually appear benign; however, over time, they begin negatively impacting the lives of many around that person. Here are some common denominators that require attention and evaluation if we want to address recovery, or if we think we might be susceptible to addiction and want to help guard against it.
Nutrient Deficiencies
Our bodies know when something is missing; they tell us in ways that are both subtle and not. We just have to be better about listening. For instance, when blood sugar drops, we may find ourselves craving something sweet. Vitamin and/or mineral deficiencies mean our bodies are no longer in a state of balance; we begin to experience cravings. The nutrients we may be lacking—from vitamins A to zinc, fatty acids, protein and more—are necessary for the production of important hormones, neurotransmitter functioning and, ultimately, feeling and living well. Addiction leads us into a vicious cycle where it may have initially resulted from nutrient deficiencies, but then our ability is hindered to nourish the body in the way that it needs in order to exit the cycle. It is important to complete lab work that tests for nutritional deficiencies and work with a healthcare provider to develop a health plan to get back into balance. 52

Past Traumas
At some point in our lives, a curious friend or a skilled massage therapist probably asked us where we might hold tension in our bodies. Another good question to ask is where we feel we are storing our past traumas. The reality is that our experiences and emotions are key factors when it comes to our tendencies, mindsets and behaviors. Unacknowledged and untreated trauma plays a huge role in addiction. The “self-medicating” term is used for those who deal with difficult emotions or states of being by drinking heavily, overeating, or engaging in patterns of risky behavior to numb pain or fill a void. In the absence of healthy coping mechanisms and trauma processing, many people fall prey to addiction. It’s important to not only recognize the traumas, but to work through them so that they don’t sneakily control us.
Head Injuries
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) sufferers are at a higher risk for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. These injuries can disrupt the way the brain normally processes information, weighs risk/benefit, manages inhibitions and makes decisions. If a head injury occurs, get checked out immediately, and follow up with a healthcare provider for further tests and monitoring. Past head traumas can leave residual impacts, so it is crucial to keep up with regular checkups. It is also important to let the healthcare provider know of any changes in behaviors, cravings, tendencies and mental processes. And if a head injury is part of
the landscape of the addiction, then it must be taken into account as part of the roadmap for recovery.
Chronic Pain
Chronic pain is another circumstance that can lead to addiction, especially if opioid painkillers have been prescribed or alcohol is being used to make the pain more bearable. Being in a constant state of pain or discomfort can take a toll on a person. And many of the drugs in question are themselves highly addictive. It can be easy to seek relief in substances or even behaviors that take the pain away in the moment, but then harm us more in the long term. For those that suffer from chronic pain, it will be useful to work with a healthcare provider to develop strategies and find non-drug therapies and practices to help best manage it. This might include physical therapy, acupuncture, craniosacral and bodywork therapies, meditation, and other alternatives. There is no reason why we can’t use these therapies in the beginning under the guidance of a healthcare provider while simultaneously digging deeper into the root cause of discomfort.

Family History
Addiction, like other illnesses, can have a strong genetic component. While there’s nothing we can do about our genetic makeup, we can certainly be aware of risk factors and work to mitigate them. It may mean avoiding the substance or behavior we worry could trigger an addiction. Maybe it’s opening up to those close to us and ensuring they know which warning signs to watch for, and how to respond if they see them. When it comes to recovery, it’s important to be aware of not just the genetic, but the social aspects of family history. Were there unhealthy messages we grew up with around drugs, alcohol, food or other things that can be abused and lead to addiction? Do we know our triggers and where they originate? These can be tough, painful questions, but ultimately being aware of where we are and where we’ve been can help us better plan a path forward.
