publisher’sletter Living in Acceptance

T

he theme for this month in our February issue of Natural Awakenings is Living Courageously with some great additional, similarly focused subject matter including Self-Love (Inspiration p. 34), Loving Our Body Image (Healthy Kids p. 24), among others. As a woman, I have to be honest, I have had a lifetime of battles with all three of these issues, and on occasion still do so to this day. I grew up with a mother who, though officially undiagnosed, had anorexia, and who was obsessed with weight, body size, etc. and as a result, I’ve had body image issues all my life. I never actually had to worry about ‘getting fat’ when I was younger because I was so active that I was actually called too skinny (though I never felt so). Nonetheless, I tended to focus on it in some form or another, this ‘body image’ issue, often comparing myself to others based on this body part, or that feature, etc. and sometimes feeling like I came up short. It wasn’t the truth, nor the perception others had of me, but it informed both my self-dialog and my behavior. There was a time for instance, when in an effort lose weight, I resorted to all of the ‘tricks’. Of course, none of the methods lasted but a couple of times, thankfully, due in part because I love food too much! Throughout history and the world, women have done some pretty insane (and sometimes dangerous) things to aspire to the ‘beauty’ trends of the times, from wearing plates in their chins to binding their feet to wearing whale-bone corsets, some of which actually caused deformities. The question of what dictates ‘beauty’ and attractiveness has been around as long as humans have been on this planet, with likely a thousand different qualifications, including some bizarre myths, like the one that claims that before it was understood that lack of iodine caused goiters, the bigger goiter you had dictated how beautiful you were perceived. Some cultures have considered very skinny women most attractive, whereas in others women are preferred more voluptuous; some have preferred short, tall, tan, pale, and likely everything in between. My point in all this is that it’s probably just best to BE YOURSELF! And if you don’t know who that is, find positive supportive ways to figure it out. Many of us spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about how things will be ‘when we lose weight’, or ‘when I’m a size x’ and sometimes hiding perfectly normal bodies instead of just accepting ourselves as we are, RIGHT NOW, and embracing, and even celebrating, our uniqueness. My wish to all of the young girls and women out there is to accept themselves, because there are a lot of things better to spend your time on than wishing you we someone else. I know this is a rough time with Social Media and all, but hopefully all of our great content this month will help us all to Live Courageously and help us have a happier outlook, because life is certainly too short for anything else.

Yours in health,

Kids Anxiety Mindfulness!

A

nxiety disorders are the most common mental health issues facing adolescents and can negatively impact student performance, disrupt their thinking, and interfere with their learning. Mindful Kids Miami (MKM) seeks to bring the benefits of mindfulness to children from pre-K through the 12th grade in Miami-Dade County and throughout Florida. “To deal with these learning obstacles while reducing bullying, educators need to be able to manage stress effectively themselves, meet their students’ broad needs, provide them with appropriate support, and most importantly, embody a mindful awareness and kind presence in the classroom”, explains Silvia Rojas, MKM Managing Director. “Mindfully trained teachers confirm that mindfulness concepts in the classroom have led to increased focus among students, an improved learning environment, and fewer behavioral problems including a decrease in bullying.” Since its inception, MKM has provided its two-core mindfulness trainings to more than 600 educators at over 120 schools. The trainings help educators, health providers, and caregivers teach mindfulness skills to children and youth in schools and in other settings. MKM offers free Mindfulness Community classes the third Saturday of each month for adults and Mindfulness Programs throughout the year for adults and children. Mindful Kids Miami is located at 5275 Sunset Drive, 2nd floor #19, in Miami. For more information call 305-270-3262 or visit www.mindfulkidsmaimi.org. February 2018

Overcome the Dry Skin Blues

T

his winter conditions all across Florida have been very dry and cold. Like most of us in Florida we are normally used to the hot humidity that keeps our skin plump and moist most of the year. With not much thought we normally keep our same routine and not switch up products with the seasons. For that our skin ends up drying out, and having to apply endless bottles of lotion, just to keep that moisture in. So why do natural soaps work better and are better for you? “Most soaps of today are mass produced with less expensive products and made of harsh powdered detergents,” explains Susan Jones, founder of Southern Original Artisan Products. “As you know our skin is the largest organ in our body and our first line of defense against the elements. Consequently our skin gets dry and our own natural oils are stripped away when non natural ingredients are present in our everyday products and soaps. With our natural soaps containing natural coconut, olive and raw shea butter, you can preserve moisture and lock in protection the whole day. Plus with the addition of our natural Essential Oils your soul feels calmer and more soothe throughout the day.” For dry skin Jones recommends Bee Knee’s, made with their rich oils and soothing moisturizing rich raw Florida honey. For more products or information call Jones at 904-477-8664, visit S-O-AP-Jax.com, or email orders.soap.jax@gmail.com. Like them on facebook-SouthernOriginalArtisanProducts. See ad, pg 20.

Silver Nitrate, the Next and More Effective Treatment for Tooth Decay A new method of treating tooth decay using silver nitrate may make the pain and expense of traditional treatments obsolete. There’s long been a big push to promote better dental health through fluoridation and telling people to eat less sugary foods. Despite those efforts, tooth decay remains a major public health issue. In fact, it’s the most common chronic childhood disease, and 90 percent of all adults have cavities! As many of us know, traditional treatments can often be painful, but a new pain-free, low-cost dental treatment could help. According to a PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) investigative report, the use of silver nitrate— a liquid antimicrobial medical treatment—has led to some big changes in the way some tooth decay is being treated. Dr. Frank Mendoza, a pediatric dentist on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in Central Oregon, began using silver nitrate in 2013. “In 35 years,” he says, “I have not seen anything that works as well.” Silver has been recorded in history for its medicinal use for millennia. The silver kills bacteria and stops new bacteria from growing. The fluoride re-mineralizes, or hardens, what’s left. That hardened material can then be used to bond or stick to that filling. The treatment is for cavities that haven’t reached the pulp of the tooth. The silver treatment when used before deep decay has helped stop further aggressive decay. In many instances, this keeps patients from having to undergo more invasive dental and surgical procedures.

Colon Cleansing

A Better Form of Preventive Dentistry

The formula called silver diammine fluoride (SDF) was cleared by the Food and Drug Administration last year for reducing sensitivities in teeth, but its so-called off-label use for stopping cavities is now its main use. One of those on the front lines of SDF research is Dr. Jeremy Horst, a pediatric dentist and a post-doc fellow at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He and his colleagues are studying the structural and chemical changes in teeth before and after they have been treated with silver products. “We completed a short-term study,” says Horst, “which blew our minds. It didn’t look like the bacteria changed very much at all. There were just dramatically less of them. So, it decreased the infection dramatically.” UCSF is teaching both pediatric and general dentistry students about SDF, but it’s not universally taught or practiced around the country yet. Later this year, the American Dental Association plans to release a clinical practice guideline on all nonsurgical approaches to cavities, including SDF. Source: Jonathan Richter, DDS, FAGD, Cariodontal.com.

There are several methods of colon cleansing that are popular with alternative medicine practitioners, which include colonic irrigation, herbal colon cleansing products, and enemas. The concept of colon cleansing is based on the idea that undigested food causes a buildup of toxins and mucus in the colon. This leads to a leaky gut, which then allows undigested food particles, toxins and bacteria into the bloodstream, which in turn leads to illness. This is partially true. Eating a high-fat diet that includes a lot of animal food and junk food does contribute to poor gastrointestinal health, damage to the gut microbiome, and leaky gut. Taking prescription drugs, such as antibiotics, contributes to the damage too. A better and much safer option is to adopt a high-fiber, low-fat plantbased diet and to drink enough water every day. This strategy is the way nature intended for the body to be cleaned out on a daily basis. Cleansing is something the body takes care of naturally when one practices good habits. Source: Pamela A. Popper, Ph.D., ND, an internationally recognized expert on nutrition, medicine and health, and the executive director of Wellness Forum Health. 10

Many consumers are not aware that all silver-colored fillings, or dental amalgams, contain mercury. In fact, amalgam fillings are comprised of approximately 50 percent mercury, according to the World Health Organization and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Although banned

Popular Needlework Crafts Go Green

Whether for function, decoration or personal gifting, the skillful hobbies of yarn arts such as knitting, quilting, weaving, stitching, sewing, crocheting and macramé are going strong. The difference these days is that doing it eco-responsibly is enhancing the process. “More people are making and hand-dyeing their own yarn,” says blogger Ann Budd (AnnBuddKnits. com), of Boulder, Colorado, former editor of Interweave Knits magazine and author of Knitting Green. “The results are beautiful with different color combinations, and even striping.” Also, more yarn is Americansourced. “Shearing and dyeing are done here to cut down on the overall carbon footprint,” explains Budd, who conducts workshops for shops

or restricted in many other countries, these fillings are still used in the U.S. Amalgam fillings pose risks to human health, and dental mercury released into the environment can cause long-lasting damage to wildlife. Jack Kall, a Doctor of Dental Medicine and chairperson of the board of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), a global network of dentists, health professionals and scientists that has been researching dental amalgam and other dental products since 1984, explains, “Mercury is continuously emitted from dental amalgam fillings, and it is absorbed and retained in the body, particularly in the brain, kidney, liver, lungs and gastrointestinal tract.”

Unsafe amalgam removal techniques also raise health concerns. Some patients require the removal of amalgam fillings due to physical deterioration, while others have it done for cosmetic purposes (white-colored fillings match the teeth better) or because they prefer to have dental fillings that don’t contain mercury. However, removal of amalgam fillings without proper safety measures can potentially lead to patients, dentists, staff and the environment being exposed to unsafe levels of mercury. Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique recommendations to mitigate dental mercury exposure are available at TheSmartChoice.com.

LOWER BODY MASS

A study of more than 50,000 people in the Czech Republic by the Seventh-Day Adventist Loma Linda University, in California, found that those that made breakfast their largest meal of the day had lower body mass index (BMI) levels. Lunch as the largest daily meal showed the next best results. The researchers concluded that timing and frequency of meals play a role in predicting weight loss or gain. The two factors associated with higher BMI were eating more than three meals a day (snacks were counted as extra meals) and making dinner the day’s largest meal.

Moderate Exercise Guards Against Depression In Exercise and the Prevention of Depression, a study of 33,908 adults in Norway by the University of New South Wales, researchers found that one hour of exercise a week reduced depression in 12 percent of the subjects. The purpose of the study was to address whether exercise protects against new-onset depression and anxiety and if so, the intensity and amount of exercise required. They concluded that regular leisure-time exercise of any intensity provides protection against future depression, but not anxiety. Thus, increasing the population of people exercising may provide public mental health benefits and prevent a substantial number of new cases of depression. 12

Chocolate and Olive Oil Help Heart Health Cardiologist Rossella Di Stefano, with the University of Pisa, in Italy, led a study of 26 people and determined that eating a combination of dark chocolate and olive oil improved cholesterol levels and blood pressure after 28 days. She says, “Fruits and vegetables exert their protective effects through plant polyphenols found in cocoa, olive oil and apples. We found that eating small, daily portions of dark chocolate with added natural polyphenols from extra-virgin olive oil was associated with an improved cardiovascular risk profile. Our study suggests that extra virgin olive oil might be a good food additive to help preserve our ‘repairing cells’.”

Antidepressants in Pregnancy Linked to Autism A study by the University of Bristol, England, of 254,610 young people from Stockholm showed that children born to mothers taking antidepressants during pregnancy had more than a 4 percent risk of autism, compared to less than a 3 percent risk in children born to mothers with psychiatric conditions not on antidepressants. Depression is common in women of childbearing age, with 3 to 8 percent of pregnant European women prescribed antidepressants. But with 95 percent of them bearing children without autism, the risks and benefits must be carefully weighed, say researchers.

Mindfulness Reduces Alcohol Cravings In a randomized, double-blind experiment published in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, University College London researchers found that among 68 heavy drinkers, just 11 minutes of recorded mindfulness training reduced drinking. Subjects were closely matched with an active control group that was taught relaxation techniques. Seven days later, the mindfulness group on average drank 9.3 fewer units of alcohol, roughly equal to three pints of beer, while the relaxation group showed no drop in alcohol consumption.

THIRD-PERSON SELF-TALK AIDS IN EMOTIONAL CONTROL As reported in Scientific Reports, two studies of 37 and 52 people at Michigan State University have discovered that talking to ourselves in the third person using statements like, “Why is John upset?” instead of, “Why am I upset?” can help improve our ability to control our emotions. Everyone occasionally engages in internal monologue, an inner voice that guides our moment-to-moment reflections. Now, scientists believe that the language used in the process influences actions differently. The premise is that third-person selftalk leads us to think about ourselves similarly to how we think about others, which provides the psychological distance needed to facilitate self-control.

Renewable Payoff Germany Undergoes an Energy Renaissance

Last May, Germany’s renewable energy mix of solar, wind, hydropower and biomass generated so much power for a few hours that customers actually got paid for using electricity. The country’s renewable power sources generate 88 percent of total electricity demand, and growing wind power assets alone are expected to make the phenomenon a regular occurrence. When this happens, commercial producers either close power stations to reduce the electricity supply or pay consumers to take it off the grid.

As we went to press, the fate of 90,000 wild horses and burros depended on Congressional action, as the U.S. Senate and House were hammering out differences in the delayed 2018 spending bill. The Senate version vowed to fund “humane and viable options” to the animal euthanasia allowed in the House bill. Last October, the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board recommended that the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) achieve its on-range population goal of 26,715 wild horses and burros while also phasing out the use of long-term holding facilities within three years. Killing tens of thousands of healthy animals would “be a betrayal of millions of taxpayers that want wild horses protected as intended in the 1971 Wild FreeRoaming Horses and Burros Act,” says Neda DeMayo, president of Return to Freedom Wild Horse Conservation. BLM has been tasked by Congress with the responsibility of protecting wild horses and other wildlife. The agency has balked at using affordable fertility control, despite ample evidence that it’s a more than 90 percent safe and effective means of population control, critics charge. Instead, it spends 65 percent of its annual budget in capturing, removing and warehousing animals.

Auto Revolution

China, the world’s largest car market, is planning to stop production and sales of traditional energy vehicles in favor of electric vehicles (EV), and the decision has sped up competitive development by U.S. automakers. General Motors is promising to launch at least 20 new electric vehicles in the next six years. “General Motors believes the future is all-electric,” says Mark Reuss, the company’s head of product development. The falling cost of lithium-ion batteries also brings a tipping point into view, observers say. By 2025 it’s possible that electric drivetrains will have no cost disadvantage compared with internal combustion engines. Technology is fast resetting the outlook for what cars can do, how consumers use them and how much an EV will cost. Tesla, Ford and Japanese and European companies are also responding to what’s being called both “the age of electricity”, and “the age of personalized transportation”. 14

Monsanto Still Gaming the System

Sealife Sanctuary Greenpeace Lobbies to Create Huge Antarctic Preserve

The South Pole is Earth’s last uninhabited outpost, and Greenpeace seeks to establish an Antarctic sanctuary of almost threequarters of a million square miles in the Weddell Sea adjacent to the vast continent that would protect whales, penguins and other wildlife. The nonprofit has called for governments to show greater vision and ambition. Frida Bengtsson, head of the Greenpeace Antarctic campaign, states, “Over the next 12 months, we have an opportunity to make history: to create an Antarctic Ocean sanctuary which would be the largest protected area on Earth.” She notes that it would also ensure healthier oceans that soak up carbon dioxide to moderate climate change. The proposal, submitted by the European Union and promoted by the German government, will be considered in October by the governmental bodies responsible for managing the Antarctic marine environment. It follows the successful adoption of the Ross Sea sanctuary in 2016.

Monsanto, the company that makes the controversial weed killer Roundup, is setting farmer against farmer and state against state with its newest product, dicamba. Amid claims and counterclaims over effectiveness and safety of crops and humans, the debate is shedding new light on how new agricultural products are introduced, tested and regulated. One major difference with dicamba is the gaseous vaporization it uses to treat crops, causing the poison to spread onto neighboring plants via wind. Brad Williams, a Missouri farmer, says that leaves on trees were “so deformed you couldn’t even really identify the differences between them.” The manufacturer claims that proper usage protocols are not being followed. Some farmers agree, while others report crop damage and human health issues. One pivotal point of debate is which federal and state agencies have jurisdiction and the power to set enforceable guidelines. At stake are millions of acres that have already been sprayed, along with the future of non-GMO farms inadvertently contaminated by the dicamba sprayed on genetically modified crops that need the poison to survive.

Britain May Charge Deposit to Reduce Bottle Litter

Britain only recycled 57 percent of the plastic bottles that were sold there in 2016, and is considering charging a deposit fee to reduce litter. Scotland is also introducing a deposit return policy for cans and bottles. Denmark recycles 90 percent and South Australia 80 percent by using deposits as an incentive. UK Environment Secretary Michael Gove says that almost 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the world’s oceans each year, with up to 80 percent washing out to sea from land. Gove is consulting with the industry to determine the advantages and disadvantages of different types of reward and return systems for plastic, metal and glass drinks containers. Britain’s decision to charge a deposit for each plastic bag in 2015 has slashed usage.

ADVERSITY How to Strengthen Your Resilience Muscle by April Thompson

At one time or another, an estimated 70 percent of people experience a life-altering traumatic event, and most grow stronger from surviving it, according to decades of research by leading institutions like Harvard and Yale universities and the University of Pennsylvania. We can prepare now for life’s inevitable hurdles and setbacks by developing the skills and tools of resilience.

I

t’s an incredibly hopeful message: We can go through the most terrible things imaginable and still get through to a better place,” says David B. Feldman, associate professor of counseling psychology at California’s Santa Clara University and co-author with Lee Daniel Kravetz of Supersurvivors: The Surprising Link Between Suffering and Success. Such researchers have found that, like elastic stretched beyond its normal limits, people often don’t just bounce back to their old form, but stretch and expand in new ways. The pair conducted in-depth case studies of survivors of extreme traumatic experiences that went on to do bold things. Just one case in point: After losing a leg in a car accident, college basketball player Casey Pieretti reinvented himself as a successful Hollywood stuntman. According to many studies, 60 to 80 percent of people grow in some way from personal trauma, known as “post-traumatic growth”, according to Feldman. “It can be as simple as appreciating each day more. It can mean deepening relationships. It may result in a renewed sense of spirituality. Or, it might take one’s life in a dramatically different direction,” he says. Ila Eckhoff, a financial executive in New York City, has experienced more than her share of challenges: developing cerebral palsy as a toddler, enduring

We have greater appreciation for the things that we had to struggle to achieve.” Choosing self-directedness instead of self-pity in the face of challenges differentiates those that thrive from those that merely survive, observes Catherine Morisset, a life coach from Ottawa, Canada, who specializes in resilience. “It’s taking responsibility for life and managing the way you want to live it. We all have choices, even in the face of difficulty,” she says.

ence,” reflects Huffman. Forgiveness—whether for others or ourself—is another key to help us move forward, reports Feldman. “Often, people can get stuck in blame, but resentment keeps people shackled to the past. If and when a person is ready to forgive, widespread research indicates that it can lead to better health outcomes.”

Strengthening Our Resilience Muscle

Experts point out that there isn’t any one

perfect formula or single must-have trait for building resilience, and none we can’t develop. Learning a skill like mindfulness is an easy place to start. “Resilient people don’t try to avoid stress, but learn how to manage and master it,” says Southwick. “Mindfulness meditation requires practice, but through it, you can learn to regulate emotions and relax the nervous system.” Eckhoff practices mindfulness several times a day with a one-minute gratitude meditation. “I have five things I am most grateful for. I close my eyes, take a deep breath and say them. It brings me focus, reduces stress and reminds me of how lucky I am,” she says. Morisset suggests making incremental changes to strengthen our resilience muscles. “Success builds success and failure builds failure, so do something you know you can accomplish and build on that,” she counsels. Writing can also be a good coping tool, according to Hensch. “Just write about your emotions. It’s amazing how much you can learn about yourself and how calming it can be.” Good times are the best times to begin “resilience training” notes Hensch.

“I sought out a therapist once I had turned the corner after my divorce and was dating someone and my business was taking off. It was precisely because I knew something else would likely happen, and I wanted to be better prepared for it,” he recalls. Applying positive self-talk when something blindsides us helps, as does not expecting to handle things perfectly. “There’s nothing wrong with just staying afloat when you’re in the middle of trauma or adversity. One key to happiness in life is just managing expectations. It’s okay to be anxious, sad and worried at times—in fact, it’s healthy,” says Hensch. Hardships are just that: hard. However, with time and experience, resilient individuals come to trust their ability to get through them, large and small. “Resiliency is not about how you bounce back from a single traumatic event; it’s how you respond every day to the challenges that life presents,” Eckhoff has learned. “Repetitive use of this ‘muscle’ builds strength and enables you to do more and sometimes, the impossible.” Connect with April Thompson, in Washington, D.C., at AprilWrites.com.

re you suffering from a burning or pain during urination, blood in urine, loss of bladder control, or do you wake up frequently to urinate? Do you suffer from pain or are you having miscarriages? Have you considered this might be linked to your oral health? We see it every day. Make 2018 your best year. The four front upper and lower teeth are connected to your ovaries, prostate and urinary tract. If any of these eight teeth are infected they will block the meridian path to those organs and glands. If you have mercury amalgam fillings, root canals, periodontal disease, or inflammation, your meridians may be blocked. Yes, you read that correctly, your teeth are connected to your prostate, ovaries and urinary tract. A recent study from Case Western Reserve University states, “If we treat the gum disease, it can improve the symptoms of prostatitis and the quality of life for those who have the disease.” A re you t i re d of going to your primary care physician, urologist, OB-GYN, endocrinologist, oncologist or your holistic practitioner? You have done acupuncture, herbs, teas, diets and chelation therapy. You have even stood on your head and sun gazed at dusk and dawn to no avail. Today is your lucky day. The common symptoms that we have

seen in men include: prostate cancer, impotence, frequent urination that sometimes interferes with work schedules or sleep patterns, and higher or abnormal levels of PSA as high as 33 (normal is .04).

Teeth Meridian Chart Connection To Body Both men and women with amalgam (silver) fillings have yeast infections causing bloating of the stomach, gas, irritable bowel syndrome, tongue thrush, dry mouth and bad breath. Women also can get vaginal candida yeast infections,

redness irritation and pain, making it difficult to have sexual intercourse. Other symptoms include multiple miscarriages, difficulties conceiving, or ovarian cancer. Tired of doctors only treating the

symptoms, patients often come to us to get to the root cause of their health issues. The first step should be removal of the infection in the meridians, healing gum infections (periodontitis), removing root canal teeth, and safely removing mercury amalgam (silver) fillings. It is imp ortant to identify and treat the underlying causes and one of those factors is your oral health. The toxicity in your body should be considered and addressed appropriately. We have 20 years of experience helping patients achieve optimal health. It is so rewarding to put closure to a cycle of madness. As a biological dental office, we will use dental materials compatible with your immune system by doing a simple blood test, giving you the health and quality of dental care that you deserve. In an ideal world you would have your doctor send you to an experienced biological dentist to remove the root cause of the problems that you are having in your body. A cutting edge doctor would know that mercury, root canals and infections need to be removed first before you begin to detox or do chelation therapy. If done before, this can affect other organs, sometimes causing irreversible damage to kidneys, liver, pancreas, and more. “Meditation is for people of all spiritual backgrounds. As a tool to develop awareness, it can enhance what you already believe and practice,” assures Diana Lang, the Los Angeles author of Opening to Meditation: A Gentle, Guided Approach and a spiritual counselor who has taught meditation for 37 years. For Jackie Trottmann, a Christian author from St. Louis, Missouri, there is no contradiction between a meditation practice and her faith; rather, they complement one another. For her, “Prayer is like talking to God, whereas meditation is listening to God. Before I came to meditation, I had been doing all the talking.”

www.namiami.com

She came to meditation during a trying period working in sales and marketing. “When a friend gave me a meditation CD, I popped it in after a stressful conference call and felt instantly calmed. Ten years later, meditation has gone beyond quieting the mind; it’s sunk into my heart and spirit,” says Trottmann, who went on to publish her own CDs at GuidedChristianMeditation.com. “I came to meditation tired of habitual suffering and stress, and wanting to be happier,” says Bill Scheinman, a coach in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), which he refers to as “mindfulness practice without the Buddhist jargon.” The Oakland, California, instructor has taught mindfulness in settings ranging from corporations to prisons, drawing from a range of meditative disciplines and 23 years of intensive practice.

Begin Modestly “Millions are seeking more mindfulness through meditation, but don’t know how to go about it,” says Sean Fargo, a Berkeley, California, meditation instructor and for-

mer Buddhist monk. “The key is to take baby steps, like going to the gym for the first time. Start by practicing a few minutes a day; just pay attention to something such as the sensations of breathing, without judgment.” “Having taught meditation to tens of thousands of people, I would say the most common issue is that beginning meditators don’t think they’re doing it right. It’s important not to judge yourself or have loaded expectations about the experience,” notes Lang. She suggests starting wherever we are right now, adding, “Whatever book, class or teacher you first stumble upon is a clue.” But that doesn’t call for rigidly adhering to a particular type of meditation forever.

Assess Benefits “Shop around and try different things, but at some point, you will begin to discover what works for you,” advises Scheinman. In trying to decide which meditation practice is right for us, “Go with what feels juicy,” says Fargo, who founded MindfulnessExercises.com, offering 1,500 free mindfulness meditations, worksheets and talks. “You’re more likely to do what feels alive and enlivening.” The act of meditating can be uncomfortable, but the challenges are part of its power. Scheinman remarks. “If you establish a daily practice, eventually, you will become more clear-headed, kinder and happier. That’s how you know your practice is working—not how you feel during meditation itself.” Consistency is key. It’s not effective to only meditate when you feel good, he says.

Overview of Options

Mindfulness practices go by many names, from vipassana to MBSR, and can be done sitting or walking, but all are focused on cultivating moment-to-moment awareness. “Mindfulness is about being aware: deliberately paying attention to body sensations, thoughts and emotions. Focused attention is on the body, heart and mind,” explains Scheinman. Guided visualization differs from most forms of meditation in that the meditator is intentionally creating a mental image, typically one of a peaceful, beautiful place. Typically, the goal of a guided visualization is deep relaxation and stress reduction. Mantra meditations involve continuous repetition of a word, phrase or sound, drawing spiritual power from the sound’s vibration, as well as its meaning. Many mantras are uttered in a tradition’s native language, such as shanti, meaning peace in Sanskrit. Teachers like Lang prefer to use mantras in English that meditators can more easily grasp, such as, “Love is the way.” Breathing meditation. Meditation experts say our everpresent breath is a sound foundation for a meditation practice, as well as an easy place to start. “Tapping into the power of our breath is vital; it cleanses our system,” says Trottmann. The Heart of the Matter

by Durjaya Thomas Pliske

M

y teacher, Sri Chinmoy, felt that meditation is an indispensable ingredient for shaping a peaceful, integrated, harmonious, happy and progressive existence, both at the individual level and globally. Meditation is often described and advertised as a means of reducing the stress or finding inner peace, which is really the same thing. My students often use this reason to begin a practice. However, meditation is much more than that. Although these are as good reason as any, the need to meditate is a shared desire which rises out of our daily experiences. At some point, we as seekers of truth and spiritual satisfaction, realize that our physical, vital-emotional and even our elevated intellectual awareness cannot, on its own merits, take us where we need to go. We also realize that the world and the life we need cannot come about through fulfilling countless desires like fame, power, wealth, or through politics and treaties. Our activities can be successful only if the heart-consciousness is fully open, anchored within and radiating its love and strength in every aspect of our lives and that of the world around us. Since the spiritual heart is the fastest and most effective portal to experience/assimilate the transformative energies that humanity needs, and because these powers and capacities are intrinsic to every one of us, Sri Chinmoy called his journey the Path of the Heart as opposed to a path of the mind. To realize, embody and eventually manifest the Highest within us, —which is to be the conscious agents and instruments of spiritual evolutionary growth— we need to take the next step in human development: OPEN OUR HEARTS. This step takes place in the vastness of the spiritual and wellspring of all our inner capacities. Opening our hearts wide is the most essential of Chinmoy instructions on meditation. Once accomplished, other capabilities emerge according to our karma, our individual soul’s needs, and the manner in which we are guided to offer dedicated service to others. To make the transition from mind-centeredness to heartcenteredness is the greatest challenge Chinmoy placed before his students. He is not asking us to abandon the mind, but to open the heart and receive the guidance and light from within. As he explains it, spirituality is part of the evolutionary process. BioContinued on page 22 February 2018

Continued from page 22. logical science tells us that life began with simple structures and progressed to more complex forms that developed consciousness. In spiritually, life began with physical forms which were then invested with vital dynamic energy. Yoga Therapy, What to Expect A Conversation with Melinda Atkins

M

elinda Atkins is the founding director of AUM Home Shala, an accredited yoga therapy school located in Coconut Grove, Florida. She was a member of the first graduating class of the only university-based yoga therapy program in the nation, at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California, and subsequently created AUM’s yoga teacher training and Clinical Yoga Therapy curriculum. The school’s yoga therapy program is one of a handful around the nation that are accredited by the International Association of Yoga Therapists, and Melinda was one of the first yoga therapists in Florida to be certified by the International Association of Yoga Therapists, documenting 2,100 hours of yoga therapy experience. Natural Awakenings asked Atkins how yoga therapy works, who can benefit, and what to expect at a yoga therapy appointment or class.

What is yoga therapy? Yoga therapy adapts traditional yogic techniques and integrates them with Western medical knowledge to create a holistic approach to individualized health care. It involves a customized, specific protocol of yoga asanas (postures), breathing, relaxation, and meditation, designed to improve an individual’s physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It can assist individuals faced with health challenges to manage their condition, reduce symptoms, restore balance, and increase vitality. The movement, breath work, and meditation techniques used in yoga therapy protocols offer wide-ranging benefits for every system of the body—cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, nervous, respiratory and reproductive. I think of yoga therapy as an “old, new waveâ€? approach to health maintenance—the ancient healing techniques

of yoga are now making a comeback as complements to both alternative and allopathic medical approaches. As an evidence-based modality, yoga therapy is becoming more and more accepted and utilized in mainstream settings, such as clinics, hospitals, nursing homes and physical therapy practices. No matter what treatment or medications a client is using, yoga can be safely implemented as a complementary therapy in conjunction with Western medical approaches. In fact, yoga therapy has been shown to be particularly effective in treating many chronic conditions that persist despite conventional medical treatment.

therapists-in-training hands-on experience in the field, accredited schools offer a clinical component that often includes supervised work with clients dealing with conditions as diverse as spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s, heart disease, fibromyalgia, depression, and cancer.

If I am recovering from an injury, how soon can I see a yoga therapist? As soon as your physical therapist, occupational therapist, physician, and other health care providers approve it. Yoga therapy can be as gentle, slow, and gradual as needed.

Who can benefit from yoga therapy? Yoga therapy can be beneficial for those dealing with chronic pain or rehabilitating from an illness or surgery; cancer survivors; people with multiple sclerosis and other neurological issues; and those with cardiovascular and anatomical issues, as well as offering relief for common complaints such as insomnia, stress and indigestion.

What does a yoga therapist do in a session? A yoga therapist focuses on the physical, psychological, and spiritual levels of the individual and prescribes specific protocols for persistent or acute health challenges. Initially, a yoga therapist conducts an in-depth intake procedure that focuses on lifestyle, physical health, and other feedback, and then creates a specific protocol for a client, choosing among yoga techniques to craft a personalized plan for better health. Follow-up sessions track progress and adjust protocol as needed. A session is typically 90 minutes in length. As well as working one-on-one with clients, yoga therapists often work closely with other healthcare providers and are trained to take SOAP* notes and otherwise communicate in the language of Western medicine.

How do I find a qualified yoga therapist? How does training for yoga therapists differ from yoga teacher training? Graduates of accredited yoga therapy programs have more than 800 hours of training, including a minimum of 150 hours of experience working directly with clients. For certified yoga teachers, adding yoga therapy to their repertoire requires certification through a program that is accredited by the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT), the leading accreditation organization in the field, which has developed rigorous standards for yoga therapy certification. To give

Yoga therapy is a specialized field that requires specific, advanced training. When seeking a yoga therapist, look for graduates of a yoga therapy training program accredited by IAYT. A yoga school or studio may be able to offer recommendations, as well as the IAYT website at IAYT.org. Banishing Body-Image Blues

How Teens Can Learn to Love Their Looks

M

any young women don’t feel comfortable in their own skin. A 21st-century global study sponsored by Unilever’s Dove brand found that 90 percent of girls from 15 to 17 years old wanted to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance, especially their body weight. University of Minnesota research following adolescents for 10 years showed that about half of the female participants had dieted in the previous year, twice the number of males. Tracy Anderson, a mother of two and fitness expert, has spent the last 18 years working with women seeking balance in their bodies. In her recent book, Total Teen: Tracy Anderson’s Guide to Health, Happiness, and Ruling Your World, she observes, “Teens are depleted from comparing themselves to the shapes of others and from scolding themselves: ‘I should be thinner, I should be able to fit in those pants, I should be in better shape.’ But looking good on the outside must start with feeling good on the inside.”

Check your local listings for participating teachers and studios, and if you’d like to contribute your services, contact Veterans Yoga Project.

Monitor Thoughts Anderson believes we feel most happy and fulfilled and accomplish the most when our minds are calm, clear and alert.

“If young women learn to connect with their mind, identify when their thoughts are anxious or stressed, and practice conscious breathing and meditating to regain a calm, centered state, they’ll be able to rebalance themselves for the rest of their lives,” she says. “By keeping a thought journal for a while and noticing when their thoughts have negative undertones, they can retrain their attitude.” Live a complaint-free day once each week. Every time a negative thought pops up, expel it and focus on a positive aspect of the idea or experience. Also invest a few moments each day feeling thankful for successful aspects of life. “After a while, these exercises become habitual,” says Anderson. “Happy, high-achieving people fill their minds with positive, uplifting thoughts, affirmations and sincere gratitude. It’s widely proven to work.”

Eat Well

“Most teens can eat junk food all day long and still wake up the next morning ready to take on the world,” Lopolo/Shutterstock.com

Veterans Yoga Project programs are designed and developed to achieve our mission to support recovery and resilience among veterans, active duty military, their families, and our communities.

Anderson says. But such an unhealthy routine “shapes eating patterns for the rest of their lives, eventually catching up with them.” She strongly believes every young woman should routinely ask herself, “Is this real food?” “A potato is a real food, or whole food, but instant mashed potatoes are processed. A fresh ear of corn is a whole food; corn chips are processed. If you want to feel strong and healthy and look great, eat whole foods,” says Anderson. Also, note how the body responds to eating specific foods. Here again, a journal can help. “Jot down how a food made you feel after 15 minutes, an hour and two hours. Are you alert or sluggish? What signals are your stomach and brain sending? It’s useful information to make better ongoing food choices,” Anderson advises. She also advocates drinking plenty of water and eating organic foods when possible, and warns teens against skipping meals or snacks when their developing bodies feel the need for fuel.

Move More

For some teens, exercise movements don’t feel comfortable or natural, which hinders them from doing healthful exercise. “I’ve found that if a young woman practices exercises for a while privately, she’ll become more comfortable and confident over time,” says Anderson. “It’s like learning

a foreign language, musical instrument or any skill. You master the basics first and build on them. With practice, you start feeling more at ease.” In her book, Anderson offers many step-by-step, illustrated workout moves designed to daily tone arms, legs and abs, and increase strength and flexibility. Many incorporate fun dance components that work well with music. “Regular exercise releases endorphins—the hormones that make us feel happier and better about ourselves,” she says. “For young women navigating the emotional ups and downs associated with menstrual cycles and puberty, exercise can be a lifesaver.” Whether it’s yoga, walking, martial arts, dancing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, climbing, skiing, gymnastics or tennis, teens need to find “some kind of movement and activity to become part of their everyday life.” A University of Wisconsin metaanalysis of 77 studies examining women’s body images suggests body dissatisfaction is a risk factor for eating disorders and a significant predictor of low self-esteem, depression and obesity. Helping young women build, strengthen or regain their positive body image and self-esteem works to empower a new generation and enables them to enjoy happier, healthier lives.

omesteading is a broad field. “Along with planting produce, we encourage people to compost, change how they use water, learn about biochar—a long-term soil amendment that returns carbon to the earth—and employ creative economics, including bartering and food-sharing systems,” says K. Ruby Blume, of Grants Pass, Oregon, who founded the Institute of Urban Homesteading, in Oakland, California, a decade ago (iuhOakland.com). She’s also co-author of Urban Homesteading: Heirloom Skills for Sustainable Living. Blume was recently engaged to invite speakers and coordinate presentation content for the three-day online Gardening and Homesteading Skills Summit hosted by The Shift Network. Last October, 20 leading farmers, master gardeners, homesteaders and other experts shared innovative, environmentally friendly advice for providing food and adopting eco-friendly practices. Blume, who grows fruit and vegetables and raises chickens, sheep and bees on 22 acres, plans to launch her Fantastic Farm Store this month, and will offer spring classes at her institute, as well as at the Rogue River Community Center, in

southern Oregon. “Everyone should grow their favorite vegetable from seed; think about the animal if eating meat; and take a nature field study class. These all connect us to nature and our world,” advises Blume.

Food as Medicine David Crow, teacher, author of In Search of the Medicine Buddha and founder of Floracopeia Aromatic Treasures (Floracopeia.com), is a leader in research and development of growing herbs for medicine, working from Grass Valley, California. He extols the importance of gardens of all types—backyards, schools, neighborhoods and public spaces. “They can strengthen communities, beautify life and reduce crime,” he says. In his home state, he helped launch The Learning Garden, at Venice High School, in 2001. “It’s an eye-opener for youngsters, and they take pride in ownership.” People without a garden plot can place a pot inside or on a balcony or find a community garden. “Medicinal plants don’t have to be a luxury of the wealthy. You can spend a fraction of the $30 for a drug prescription in growing most of them, and then trade for others with neighbors,” says Crow.

He particularly values oregano, thyme, rosemary, lavender and basil. To increase yields, home gardeners may consider daily drip irrigation—a system of tubes positioned just above the soil, with tiny holes spaced at regular intervals. It can conveniently work on a timer with an automatic shutoff during rain. Other benefits include water conservation and better soil structure by avoiding puddles from manual watering. “Drip irrigation can be especially helpful during dry spells, which can run two to four weeks in many climates,” says Robert Kourik (RobertKourik.com), landscape consultant, horticultural researcher and author of Drip Irrigation for Every Landscape and Climate, and last year’s Understanding Roots. “It can be effective for virtually any fruit or vegetable, except water crops like rice and cranberries.”

Green Living Carol Venolia, author, speaker and architect in Santa Rosa, California, (ComeHome ToNature.com) has designed homes of straw, earth and sustainably sourced and reclaimed wood throughout the West. She consults on greening schools, healing centers, camps and eco-villages, and stresses the benefits of sunlight as in her new e-book, Get Back to Nature Without Leaving Home. She says, “Sunlight’s many wavelengths, shifting directions and intensities render biological effects that keep us

functioning well. Watch how it enters your home; changes occur daily and seasonally.” It’s easy to move furniture to align with sunshine. In warmer climates, attach plant trellises or fabric awnings outside windows to filter or direct reflected light. “Add a potted plant to a window and a picture of a natural scene on a wall. Take the time to get out into woodlands,” advises Venolia. She commends Marc Rosenbaum, of South Mountain Company, in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, as a green building leader who “brings a soulful approach, as well as engineering, data and technology efficiencies, to a project.” Along with green building goals like zero net energy, Rosenbaum strives to create homes that are healthy, comfortable, resource-efficient, durable and adaptable by the people that inhabit them. Along with being part of the slow food movement and do-it-yourself trends, Blume believes, “Homesteading gives people the feeling they are making a positive difference by making sustainable changes in their lifestyle and home.”

Do-Good Dogs Do Almost Anything

Service Animals Train to Help People in Need

S

by Sandra Murphy

ervice dogs help an aging population live full lives in spite of limitations, no matter the size, age or breed of dog. Plus, hundreds of thousands of canines make living with disabilities both possible and more pleasant.

The Rules “Service dogs don’t eat on duty, and should be on the floor, not put in a handbag or shopping cart,” advises Maggie Sims, project manager for the Rocky Mountain Americans with Disabilities Act Center, in Colorado Springs. “If the dog disrupts business, the person can be asked to remove the animal and then return. Emotionalsupport dogs are not provided for by the disabilities act, because the dog does not perform a specific task. “We get calls from people concerned about fake service dogs when owners try to bring them into places where pets generally aren’t allowed. Usually, they’re the ones that behave badly,” Sims says. Service animals are not required to wear a special vest or have documentation.

www.namiami.com

Educating the Public A motorcycle accident left Matthew Smith dependent on using a wheelchair or crutches. An administrator at Comcast Cable, in Baltimore, Maryland, Smith relies on his pit bull, Jericho, to fetch dropped items, open doors and help him maintain balance. “Gravity is my specialty,” he jokes. “If I fall, he braces me so I can get up. Moving about stresses my shoulders, so Jericho pulls the wheelchair on days when I’m in pain.” Although working service dogs should not be petted or approached, Smith tells Jericho, “Go say ‘Hi,’” if someone asks to approach him. “Pit bulls have an undeserved bad reputation, so I’ll take a minute to let people meet him to change that perception. When Jericho is the subject of conversation, it also takes the spotlight off of me,” he says. Jericho was trained by Apryl Lea, a certified assistance dog trainer for the Animal Farm Foundation’s Assistance Dog Program, in Kingston, New York. She explains, “The pit bulls I train are from shelters, and must be good with people and other

animals and be comfortable in social settings that match the person’s lifestyle.”

Overcoming Obstacles

When someone brings a dog into a place of business, we can legally ask only two short questions: “Is this animal needed for a disability?” and “What tasks has the animal been trained to do in relation to the disability?”

“When a counter is too high, a service dog can pass money to the cashier. Dogs will pull a rope to open a heavy door. In the event of seizures or fainting, our dogs react based on location; at home, they find another family member, but in public, will stay with their person,” Lea says. The muscles of a patient with Parkinson’s disease may freeze while walking. Dogs brace against a resulting fall or touch the person to help unfreeze the muscles. Tethered to an autistic child, the dog provides distraction from repetitive behaviors like flapping hands or crying, while keeping the child in a safe area. Some dogs are trained to track the child, as well, in case of escape. Likewise, dogs can give Alzheimer’s disease patients a bit of freedom without getting lost.

Sounding Alerts Hearing dogs alert their hearing-impaired person to the sound of a doorbell or ringing phone. In the car, they’ll nudge the driver with a paw if they hear a siren. Riley the Chihuahua’s job is caring for Jennifer Wise, an aromatherapist and owner of Enchanted Essence, in Toledo, Ohio. Wise has a neurological disease that affects her legs and makes

her prone to falls. “Riley’s trained to bark for help if I am unable to get up,” she explains. “If barking fails, he’ll grab someone’s pant leg or shoelaces and pull in my direction. He’s small, but determined.” Michelle Renard, a stay-at-home mom in Woodstock, Georgia, relies on Mossy, a goldendoodle trained by Canine Assistants, in nearby Alpharetta, to detect high- and lowblood sugar levels. “She’s never wrong,” says Renard.

Comfort and Joy Linda Blick, president and co-founder of Tails of Hope Foundation, in Orange County, New York, observes, “A veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder may not show outward symptoms, but have anxiety. Dogs are trained to turn on the lights, lick their person’s face or apply reassuring pressure by lying across their person’s chest to bring them out of night tremors. “One of our veterans was so uncomfortable in public, it was difficult for him to even speak to the veterinarian about his dog’s torn knee ligament,” Blick explains. “For the sake of the dog, he managed to discuss care, a big step for him.” As Sims states, “True service dogs literally give people with disabilities their lives back.” Connect with freelance writer Sandra Murphy at StLouisFreelanceWriter@mindspring.com.

repetition and visual reinforcement. We have patients do simple exercises with the ball hundreds of times so these pathways start to form,” explains Bob Schrupp, a physical therapist and founder of Therapy Network, in Winona, Minnesota. One goal for physical and occupational therapists is to help clients perform rehabilitation exercises that also motivate them to continue exercising. While the ball is an excellent tool in clinical settings, Schrupp cautions, “After a stroke, or if you’re older or in poor health, it’s always best to check with your doctor or physical therapist to determine if stability ball exercises are appropriate.”

heir playful appearance as a beach ball look-alike makes exercise balls welcome props in home workouts, gyms and yoga studios. “They’re a fun training tool for every age, from children to maturing Baby Boomers,” says Dennis Fuchs, CEO of TheraGear, in Sumas, Washington. “Exercise balls are affordable and offer many benefits, from enhanced mobility to reduced risk of injury and increased athletic performance.” Originally developed by Italian plastic manufacturer Aquilino Cosani in 1963 as a toy called the Gymnastik and then used by British and Swiss physical therapists to help orthopedic patients, the ball has since come a long way to serve fitness needs. Also known as Swiss, stability, balance, physio- and Pilates balls, this colorful piece of equipment can range in size from 14 to 34 inches to be appropriate for a user’s height (Tinyurl.com/RightSizeExerciseBall).

Core Strength Without Strain Stability balls are recommended by fitness trainers and chiropractors for their ability to build core strength and increase flexibility of pelvic muscles without putting unnecessary strain on the back. “The core is a series of muscles used in almost all functional movement; tailored exercises focus both on abdominal and back strength and pelvic and hip stability,” explains Linnea Pond, an exercise instructor at the Pocono Family YMCA, in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Using an exercise ball also promotes full body conditioning. “Swiss ball training connects the brain with stabilizer muscles, improving gross motor skills and upper body strength, as well,” Fuchs elaborates. “These versatile training balls help equip an individual to handle the functional demands of sports and everyday life.”

Recovery from Injury and Illness Exercise balls are used in occupational therapy for stroke patients and others recovering from injury. “A stroke deadens part of the brain, and to regain movement in an affected arm or leg, an unaffected part of the brain must take over the lost function. The goal of the therapist is to establish new neural pathways through 30

Pregnant Women and Senior Fitness Balance balls, when used properly, can offer a safe way for pregnant women, children and seniors to stay fit. Exercising with a ball can help older individuals increase flexibility, especially in the hips, with cardiac strengthening as a bonus. Pregnant women can safely increase and maintain abdominal strength as the baby grows, and in doing so, care for muscles that will help them through labor. “Pregnancy can throw a woman off balance, and a growing baby puts pressure on internal organs. Pressing the back on a stability ball against a wall offers support for squats. Sitting on a ball helps maintain good posture and pelvic mobility, and reduces low back pain,” explains Pond. Incorporating the ball into yoga or Pilates routines prompts different muscles into action because it calls on the body’s learned ability to sense and respond to movement, termed proprioception. Pond says, “Proprioception is challenged just from sitting on the ball; there are immediate physical adjustments made to maintain posture and stability. In yoga, the ball is another tool to increase flexibility and balance.”

School and Workplace Exercise balls are increasingly replacing traditional chairs in classrooms and offices, and teachers are reporting better grades and attention span as a result, while workers appreciate better-toned muscles and enhanced balance. Maintaining good posture by sitting on the ball also increases blood circulation throughout the body, including the brain. Regarding the equipment’s eyecatching appearance, Schrupp sees a helpful bonus: “The ball is a big, colorful reminder to perform your exercises.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, author and multimedia artist. Cocoa powder. Cacao’s flavanols lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of stroke and act as antioxidants to prevent inflammation. Dr. JoAnn E. Manson, a physician, doctor of public health and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School affiliate Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, confirms, “Between 400 and 900 milligrams (mg) a day of cocoa flavanols may favorably affect several mechanisms and pathways related to cardiovascular disease prevention.” Not all chocolate is created equal. Manson recommends chocolate with cocoa or cacao as the first ingredient, not sugar. She 32

and her colleagues are currently conducting the Cocoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study, a large-scale, randomized study of 18,000 U.S. men and women testing the benefits of ingesting 600 mg per day of cocoa flavanols.

2

Raspberries.

Just one-half cup of berries a day can provide plenty of phytonutrients and antioxidants for decreasing inflammation and preventing heart disease, says Wendy Bazilian, a doctor of public health and registered dietitian in San Diego, and author of The SuperFoodsRx Diet: Lose Weight with the Power of SuperNutrients. “Whirl them into a breakfast smoothie, add them to a green salad or combine them with dark chocolate for a tasty, heart-healthy dessert,” she advises.

3

Salmon.

Full of omega-3 fatty acids, wild-caught salmon (about two six-ounce weekly servings) helps reduce systemic inflammation and risk of developing atherosclerosis, hypertension and stroke, according to Dr. Josh Axe, of Nashville, Tennessee. Beyond prevention, omega-3s in oily fish are also

nesium—about 764 mg per cup— roasted pumpkin seeds, or pepitas, top the list of heart-healthy nuts and seeds. Magnesium is an important electrolyte that helps the heart fire on all cylinders and not skip a beat. Improvements in lipid profiles can occur with a daily intake of 365 mg, or about a half-cup, of pepitas. Enjoy roasted pumpkin seeds as a snack or scatter them in a salad, bowl of chili or soup for a delicious crunch.

5

Avocados. Fresh avocados supply

magnesium, plus they’re a good source of potassium, another electrolyte the heart needs for optimum functioning. “You probably know bananas and citrus fruits are top sources of potassium, but I like avocados because they also supply healthy fats,” says Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra, a boardcertified cardiologist with the HeartMD Institute, in Manchester, Connecticut.

6

Almonds. Sinatra recommends

a handful of almonds a day to raise HDL, a form of “good” cholesterol he likens to a “lipid garbage truck” that picks up oxidized “bad” LDL in the bloodstream and carries it to the liver for processing.

7

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil. Cold-pressed

extra-virgin olive oil with a high phenol content can help lower blood pressure

8

Beet Juice.

A 2015 study in the journal Hypertension found that two daily eight-ounce glasses of beet juice can help reduce high blood pressure. Beets contain a natural dietary nitrate found in previous studies to lower high blood pressure. Enjoy beet juice in smoothies, as a tart drink known as a “shrub” (beet juice with raspberry vinegar) or in soups like borscht.

Garlic. Allicin, the sulfur compound that gives garlic its distinctive aroma, helps keep blood thin and flowing optimally, says Sinatra. The freshest chopped garlic offers the best benefits, according to a study from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

10

Pomegranate. Drinking about one cup of pomegranate juice a day for three months can improve blood flow to the heart, reports a study in the American Journal of Cardiology. The ultimate reason of all to keep our hearts in good working order was voiced by Helen Keller: “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. Beautyheart radishes, also known as watermelon radishes, are particularly wonderful, as their flavor is soft and slightly sweet, and they provide an amazing magenta color to this salad. Pair this salad with a favorite winter sandwich or soup and enjoy!”

Mark Rosenfeld’s Secrets for Successful Love Matches by Alison James

A

ustralian author, speaker and dating coach Mark Rosenfeld knows firsthand the challenges of navigating romantic relationships. After struggling with shyness, he took on a confidence-boosting job as an exotic dancer in 2011, working with men at both ends of the assertiveness spectrum. In this milieu, he gained a better understanding of men’s thoughts and actions related to women. Through his career as a dancer while in his own satisfying relationship, Rosenfeld also personally communicated with about 50,000 women, many of which opened up about their own trials and tribulations with dating. A resident of Brisbane, Rosenfeld launched the website MakeHimYours.com. au in 2014, sharing what he’s learned in order to help women stop experiencing frustrations in dating and start attracting healthy, happy relationships. He’s also participated in the conversation at The Good Men Project on what enlightened masculinity means in the 21st century.

What are the greatest misconceptions women have about men?

Why do both genders need to nurture their feminine energy?

Both genders face significant, yet different, challenges, and so believe the other gender has it easier. Men want to feel cared for and heard. Many are terrified to approach a woman; they fear rejection or not being a good enough provider. Often, when a woman perceives that a man needs space, it’s his fears and insecurities that are keeping him from deeper intimacy.

What mistakes do women make in the courtship phase? Women often get ahead of themselves in the dating stage, instead of taking enough time to let things unfold. I tell women 36

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

to slow down and date multiple men to counter that tendency. It’s also good to “widen the funnel” and date different types of men, especially if you seem to attract the so-called “wrong” type. Keep deep emotions and commitments out of the courtship phase, while you discover who someone is and if they are right for you.

As a man, I can spend too much time on my masculine energy and be too logical and focused on end results. I can lose a sense of self, presence and connection with the present moment. Meditation is one entry point; I find practicing a martial art is grounding, as is spending quality time with a woman. If an individual spends too much time in either energy, imbalance occurs; everyone has to find their own equilibrium.

What are good ways to practice self-care while seeking and sustaining a relationship? Find activities in your day that make you feel nurtured, happy and good about your-

www.namiami.com

self. Take care of your health, home and friendships. Exercise some independence. Make your life fulfilling, so that men want to be part of your exciting days.

How can we best navigate the world of online dating and other means of meeting potential mates? It starts with your mindset. If you think you will be on a dating site for three weeks and find a mate, don’t bother. Be prepared to engage for a minimum of six to 12 months. Consider bad dates as reasons to laugh. Think of it as “online introducing”. It’s up to you to quickly get past the chat stage to real communication and real dates. Online potential mates don’t have a “vibe” for you like they do in person. I suggest talking with prospects on the phone and keeping first dates short. Keep an open mind to recognize prospects you might otherwise overlook. Online dating is a supplement, not a substitute, for meeting compatible men or women in real life. You should be tapping networks of friends, family and colleagues to make connections, as well as being open to meeting potential mates at public events.

Which signs indicate that a dating prospect wants to pursue a genuine relationship? Emotional momentum, combined with consistency, is an important sign. Anyone can put in effort for a little while; but do they periodically disappear? No one wants someone they feel a connection with to physically or emotionally wander away, or risk the object of their affection thinking they aren’t interested. Make sure they are reciprocating the effort you put in. Prioritizing is another sign; a person will find a way to see someone they care about. A key third sign is integration. They will want to respectfully integrate you into their world more and more, introducing you to friends, family and work colleagues. Look for this overall pattern to continue over time. It’s vital to let people prove themselves with their actions. Alison James is a freelance writer in Washington, D.C.

FENG SHUI for 2018 Year of the Earth Dog

C

lassical Feng Shui reveals that Earth undergoes energy shifts every February, bringing prosperous energy to certain sectors of your home or office and negative afflictions to others. Correspondingly, we must make changes to our living space in order to harness the positive and avoid the negative! Feng Shui studies energy (known as Qi or Chi) flow and its affects. Qi must first be attracted and collected outside your home, then utilized within your home in the sector where each of the 9 types of Qi (“9 Stars”) resides. Prosperous Star (Star 8), is found in the Southeast in 2018. Use a compass to locate Southeast sector and activate Wealth and Good Fortune with water or yang elements such as a fan, TV, fountain, clock or anything in constant motion. Move furniture and use this sector as your main living area or TV room. If your main door is in the Southeast expect a prosperous year. Happiness Star (Star 9) radiates from your home’s center in 2018. Ensure that

the center of your home is clear of clutter and has open space to let Qi settle harmoniously. Heavenly Luck Star (Star 6) is in the Southwest. Excellent career opportunities, good health, and help from others all result from activating Star 6. Activities including reading, conversations with family, or office work in this area will activate this Star. If your main door is in Star 6, activation occurs every time you enter the house. Victory Star (Star 1) is in Northwest sector. Work or study in this sector will provide opportunities for wealth accumulation and improvements to academic pursuits. Star 1 helps with anything related to literature or the written word. Romance and Scholastic Luck Star (Star 4) falls in the South. Star 4 is conductive for anything associated with academic and intellectual pursuits and short romance. People working in creative and artistic fields greatly benefit from it. If your main door is located here, travelling could have positive outcomes this year and relationships will flourish. Like Yin & Yang every year’s positive comes with destructive energy sectors. AVOID major activities, renovations, groundbreaking, or sleeping in them to prevent financial loss, illness, accidents, and arguments. Deadly Yellow Star (Star 5) is in the North. It is the worst afflicted area in 2018 because the ‘Three Killings’ falls in the same sector as the 5 Deadly Yellow! Everyone must completely avoid any activities in the North area. If your Main door is in the North of your home, use a side door to enter the house.

The Grand Duke, considered King of the Year is in Northwest 1 sector (compass reading from home’s center between 292.6 and 307.5 degrees) The Grand Duke should be praised, respected, and undisturbed. Be mindful to put your back against Grand Duke rather than face him to harness his protective energy. Sickness Star (Star 2) resides in the West. Health problems and medical conditions can appear or worsen. Expectant mothers MUST avoid this sector to prevent pregnancy issues. Introduce metal objects (brass, cooper, iron or bronze) to the area to mitigate negative effects. Quarrelsome Star (Star 7) falls in the East. Activating this Star can cause scandals, violence, theft, assault, deception and backstabbing. Anyone in the public eye (celebrities, artists, journalists, PR, and politicians) should avoid this sector at all costs. Avoid sleeping in Star 7 as you will constantly deal with marital problems and arguments. Jade Star (Star 3) resides in the Northeast. Star 3 triggers aggressiveness, stubbornness and competitiveness amongst the home’s occupants as well as legal troubles. Use fire elements (red lamps, candles, or oil lamps) to mitigate effects.

Detox your mental clutter Carve out some alone-time during which you don’t do ANYTHING. This is one of the most effective breaks you can get. Learn and enjoy doing NOTHING at all.

Detox your surroundings

Detox your Body and Mind 5 Ayurvedic Steps by Nadja-Timea Scherrer

A

yurveda is an ancient natural healing system from India that looks at the body, mind, heart and soul as a unit. It takes a holistic approach to every aspect of our life. So if you detox your body, you automatically detox your mind, heart and soul. Ayurveda not only encompass the digestion of food but the digestion of everything else entering the system such as thoughts, emotions, the energy of things, places, and people. Consequently, Ayurvedic detox goes far beyond fasting or changing your diet. Take a period of two weeks during which you commit to detoxifying your life. Prior to this period, start spending more time alone in nature, reconnecting with the elements and being present in the moment, consciously breathing in the essential oils of trees, the cold ocean breeze or enjoying the feeling of freedom in nature. Following are steps to take to support your detox.

Detox your diet For a period of 2 weeks stop drinking alcohol, smoking, and eating fast food. Only eat warm, natural and fresh home-cooked 38

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

meals, reduce your refined sugar and caffeine intake and only drink either room temperature or hot beverages.

Detox your breath The breath is the gateway that connects the body, emotions and the mind, so you can use it to detox all of them. Alternate nostril breathing is an efficient way to detoxify the system.

Detox your body Choose four yoga twist poses (asanas) you like and hold each of them for 7 deep breaths, counting on 4 on the inhale and 6 on the exhale. This wrings out the toxins in your body and declutters your mind. Get yourself a tongue scraper and scrape your tongue every morning right after getting up before you drink water. This will help you get rid of the bacteria that accumulates on your tongue during the night and will also stimulate the digestive process that already started on your tongue. Take a detoxifying Epsom salt bath; add 6 drops of natural essential lavender oil for complete relaxation. If you add some powdered coconut milk it will not only smell yummy but also add a creamy lusciousness.

www.namiami.com

Create space by decluttering and deep cleaning your entire home from refrigerator to wardrobe and make space for things you want in your life. Stay away from people that bring you pain as much as you can and don’t feel bad about it. Then consciously bring in things you want like colors, scents, music, lighting that you right now feel attracted to. Also, think about what fills you with joy; reading, spending time with someone special, creating art, whatever it is bring it into your surroundings by making space on your table for a sewing machine, putting up a picture of your dead grandfather, playing an instrument, etc. You don’t have to think about the end result if creating makes you happy. All you need to do is create because this is healing by itself. It doesn’t need to go anywhere. Feng Shui is a lifestyle system that will help you elevate the energy in your home or office and support you in manifesting the intentions you have, personally and professionally. It means wind and water, and is an ancient science that has been used for centuries by royal families to increase their wealth and maintain good standing. It has been proven to help shift energy and solve re-occurring problems with simple changes to the space.

How does Feng Shui affect our environment?

Everything is energy and the energetic signature of your environment sends out messages that will open you up or block you from what you truly desire. Looking at your environment with fresh eyes is a good way to tune into the changes it is asking for. Having the correct Feng Shui in your environment will be the catalyst to attracting your intentions and opportunities that align with your vision, values, and goals much easier and quicker. It is truly an act of Self- Love to decide to change your space as you personally grow and change so it reflects who you have evolved into.

www.namiami.com

Having a professional consultation is valuable when you desire to manifest specific intentions. There are a just a handful of trained consultants and designers that use this powerful modality to create thriving environments for their clients. Many people try to implement simple things they read about without much success in seeing their intentions realized.

Do you have any quick tips to share with our readers?

Here are a few of my best Feng Shui Tips to start making changes in your space immediately: • Position your desk, sofa, and bed facing the door or entrance to the room. • Clear unnecessary clutter or release items that no longer inspire you or get utilized. • Bring the outside in with plants, flowers, and natural elements- this will bring the energy of life in a stagnant space. • Sit in a room that doesn’t feel right and ask intuitively what is missingyou will hear it, then change it. • Create a personal power space someplace that you go to each day and reflect, dream, write, and connect to the next steps to take that day. • Hang a set of wind chimes outside your door or on your balcony to call in your intentions after making an intention. A Doctor Shares the 3 Things He Learned From his Near Death Experience that Saved his Marriage

Is Your Relationship On The Brink Of Dying?

A

s the head of anesthesiology at a leading heart hospital in California, I used to put people to sleep to heal their hearts. It took a life-changing Near Death Experience (NDE) and the near death of my marriage to awaken me to the truth of a truly healthy heart. Before my NDE, I was addicted to status and materialism. I was obsessed by the stock market, having the biggest house in town, and acquiring flashy, expensive cars. And I was a classic patriarch—as the head of my household, I expected unquestioning obedience and deference from my three children and from my wife. My NDE changed all that. I learned that consciousness exists outside of our body, and that life, therefore, exists after 42

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

death. I also saw firsthand that there is one, all-pervading, supreme love and intelligence that is the source of the entire universe. Therefore, we are all connected to each other because we are all made of the one and same energy that manifests as differentiated matter. This realization helped me see past the addictions I held in my life. As a result of this clarity about the nature of reality, my priorities changed. I left my highly successful career as a heart-anesthesiologist and sold my mansion and expensive cars in order to pursue consciousness-based healing. And yet, just as I embarked upon this mission to spread consciousness-based healing to others suffering from addiction, life gave me the opportunity to practice this healing on

www.namiami.com

myself in the realm of love and heartbreak. You see, as I prepared to embark upon my newly discovered path, my wife told me she didn’t love me anymore. I felt the same kind of shock you would feel if I told you gravity was not real. Everything I knew to be true—the very foundation of my world—was destroyed. How could this be true? How could she do this to me? I was completely heartbroken. I went through two years of acute pain. I experienced symptoms of PTSD including flashbacks, waves of panic, chest pain, and a decline in functioning. I felt utterly victimized and tormented by things that were beyond my control. And yet, also during this time, I came to recognize my own role in the demise of my marriage. This breach

of love did not come from a vacuum. When I was honest with myself and set aside my own ego, I could see my power in creating the current reality. And so I was able to turn back to the truths my NDE had taught me and ask: “How can this be applied to healing my heartbreak?” Thus began my journey from heartbreak to healing to thriving again in love. It was through a spiritual practice of forgiveness, loving-kindness, ego-surrender, and consciousness-based healing that I am now experiencing a love that is better than I ever had before (and with my wife, I’m happy to say)! Looking back now, I see that I was not only meant to share the NDE-revealed truths with others, but was destined to apply them first to my own life to experience the healing process firsthand. The trauma of the “near death” of my marriage prompted me to apply the consciousness-based healing lessons I had learned in my NDE to heal my heart, my wife’s heart, and our marriage. If your heart is broken but you don’t want to give up on your relationship just yet, tackle these heart-healing practices I have compiled from the lessons bestowed on me in my NDE- to Forgive, Love, and Heal. You may very well be able to heal your relationship, and if not, you will be well on your way to healing your heart.

Forgive •

Give up hope for a different past. What’s done is done. Let it go. I don’t condone some of the things my wife did to betray me, but if I keep rehashing them in my mind, I only become angry, which does me no good. I cannot change the past. By focusing on the present I am happy, because we have each committed to mending our marriage and the relationship we have built now is so good. Moreover, I have recognized my part in driving my wife to do the things she did, so I cannot blame her entirely, either. To move forward, I had to forgive myself for my faults and change them.

It was through a spiritual practice of forgiveness, loving-kindness, ego-surrender, and consciousness-based healing that I am now experiencing a love that is better than I ever had before (and with my wife, I’m happy to say)! diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but a papaya may be even better. Before my NDE, I never helped with any of the household chores. That was a woman’s job. Now I shop regularly and even help my wife cook. After a recent trip to the market, I realized I had forgotten to pick up papayas. Knowing that papayas are my wife’s favorite, I went back to the store to get them. That simple gesture meant more to my wife than any gift I had ever given her. •

Be fully present when talking with your significant other. Put down your phone. Turn off the TV. Close your computer. Give him/her your undi-

vided attention. We now have an understanding in our home. After 6:00, when my wife comes home from work the “office is closed.” I don’t answer calls or get on the computer for the rest of the evening. It is “our” time. •

Mudita. Before my NDE, my marriage was what I call ‘vertical.’ I was the head of the family, and everyone, including my wife, was below me. Although my wife had a successful career of her own as a family dentist, I expected her to shop, cook, take care of the children, and cater to my needs and wants. If we were going to do something together, we almost always did what I wanted- my choice of restaurant, movie, vacation spot, etc. My wife was unhappy and lonely, but I never knew it (or cared to know it) because she never felt safe enough to tell me that. Now I am much more sensitive to her desires, and follow her lead more often than not. Making her happy is now my happiness (and I have grown an appreciation for so many things that I might not have experienced otherwise). The Sanskrit word “Mudita” describes feeling joy in another person’s happiness. If you can be truly happy for another person, your heart will be full. Continued on page 44.

Meditate. If you are angry or in despair, find a meditation that works for you- a simple breath meditation, perhaps-and discipline yourself to meditate (or recite a prayer, if that resonates with you) on a regular basis to help find a calm removed from the emotional overwhelm you are feeling. When you elevate your level of consciousness in meditation or prayer, the pain of the trauma lessens so that you can begin to heal. Give selflessly. The Sanskrit word “Seva” describes a kind of love in action. When you help someone without any regard for your own needs, you in fact help raise the collective whole. And since you are a part of

that whole because everything is connected, you are uplifted as well. Give love- to anyone, even a pet- and you will receive love.

“The Consciousness Based Healing I learned on the other side transformed my life and gave me new purpose—to help the heartbroken heal and return to love again.” Dr Rajiv Partidr Rajiv Parti is a worldrenowned heart anesthesiologist and was chief of anesthesiology at Bakersfield Heart Hospital for more than a decade before having a life-changing near-death experience. Trained in western medicine, Dr. Parti is also a student of eastern medicine, which has led him to formulate an integrative approach to a truly healthy heart. He is a certified co-active coach

Seed Librarians at the Front Lines How seed libraries are fighting against agricultural giants to increase genetic diversity in our crops and build a more resilient food supply. by Mark Schapiro

B

reak open a seed and you unravel a genetic story. Inside every seed is a narrative told by chromosomes, a tale that reveals how the plant absorbs nutrients and responds to threats from pests and weeds and to changes in climate and weather. Inside every seed library—and there are more than 400 of them now—is another tale. Here are seeds that have been locally cultivated, saved and passed along from farmer to farmer. They are repositories of genetic information that have been quietly spreading across America during the last decade. They tell the story of how, at a time of unprecedented climatic stress on our food supply, people are fighting to expand their range of crop choices to respond to changing climate conditions. As one company after another is purchased by the giants that now dominate the seed trade—most notably MonsantoBayer, DuPont-Pioneer and Syngenta, which together have purchased hundreds

of locally based seed companies over the past 20 years—the libraries are defying efforts to homogenize the seeds. The United States Department of Agriculture points to climate change as a significantly disruptive force on America’s capacity to grow food, and recommends a more diverse array of crops as a major step toward developing greater resiliency. At the same time, numerous studies (including a major 30-year side-by-side comparison of the yields from organic versus conventional agriculture) suggest that farm fields with greater diversity are just as productive as the mono-cropped farms that rely on heavy applications of agricultural chemicals, and they come with far less collateral damage to the environment and public health. As the industry consolidates, seed libraries are emerging like a parallel universe, offering local varieties for farmers and gardeners to test out, replant and evaluate for other local users. Many are hosted by public lending libraries—adding a new sort of story to the many already on the shelves. The seeds are often housed in small packets

inside old-fashioned card catalogs rescued from storage bins when libraries went digital. These small-scale seed sanctuaries are at the forefront of efforts to sustain and nourish a diverse seed supply. The libraries operate according to basic farmer principles, almost nostalgic by now: Those who test the seeds out in their fields are expected to return the following season with a sampling of the results and notes on their performance that might be helpful to the next user. While there are abundant studies about the importance of diversity to a thriving agriculture, there are few about the relatively recent role of seed libraries. One of those, in the Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences by Nurcan Helicke, an assistant professor of environmental studies and sciences at Skidmore College, suggests that the libraries and other forms of open seed-sharing enhance farmers’ knowledge of seeds’ performance in local conditions and provide a hedge against the loss of precious genetic information to a homogenizing industry. “Seed libraries and seed exchanges may be the most important thing we’re doing for agriculture in the 21st century,” says Bill McDorman, director of the Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance, which has been working with farmers and gardeners in the mountain states to find and breed the grains and vegetables that have practically disappeared under the pressure of largescale commodity farms. In the enormous picture of U.S. agriculture, these are all relatively small initiatives. But they are the kernel of an effort to stimulate and sustain the wide genetic spectrum that is critical to a resilient food system. “Hopefully we’ll have preserved enough diversity,” says Rebecca Newburn, in Richmond, California, “to save us when the [current] system no longer works.” Mark Schapiro is an investigative journalist specializing in the intersection between science, politics and power. His most recent book is Seeds of Resistance: The Struggle for Our Food. Y Nahko and Medicine for the People, an American world music collective, recently released their newest collaboration Nahko: My Name is Bear in which lead singer, Nahko, reminisces on his personal journey of discovering his connection to the Creator while traveling and exploring Alaska and Hawaii in his early 20’s. Medicine for People’s music is known for its of activism, with lyrics honoring the Earth, Native American traditions and indigenous tribes with motivational lyrics aimed to inspire listeners to “take a deeper role in protecting and preserving the planet, people and the spirit in all creation.” This new album highlights Nahko’s entering into adulthood, which is when he reconnected with his birthmother on the reservation where he was born and then given up for adoption. The discovery of his roots and the struggles of Native Americans in modern times have propelled him into the activist musician he is today. Songs on Nahko: My Name is Bear are softer than previous albums with acoustic piano melodies. Lyrics encourage “going with the flow” such as in “Creation’s Daughter” and “Alice.” During the hustle and bustle of the season, music with melodies and lyrics that encourage connection to faith, peace and calmness can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system for relaxation, balance and restoration.

Y Canadian musician Ken Dunn, recently released his seventh album, Wondrous Beauty, which shares heartening lyrics with a traditionally rooted folk music-style including fiery fiddle acoustics by Tyler Beckett whose sounds are reminiscent of John Hartford, Hot Tuna and Jefferson Airplane. The album has reached the top 50 internationally and top 10 in Canada on the Folk DJ Charts. The Journal of Roots Music reviewed it as “mature-sounding standard rural and spirited old songs” that even win over audiences that may not resonate with folk-style music. Positive messages are captured within each song with lyrics such as “I’ve been waiting for these eyes to see all the wondrous beauty” and “take it gently; take it slow.” The song “Still I Believe” promotes holding on to faith during the changes that maturing adulthood brings.

Be Alert to Anaphylaxis Symptoms by Lisa Sullivan, M.D.

Food Allergies a Growing Problem by Lisa Sullivan, M.D.

F

ood allergies have become a growing public health and safety issue, with reactions to peanuts and tree nuts doubling in the past decade. True food allergies affect 15 million Americans, including 6 million children, with one in six at significant risk of anaphylaxis. Even though 25 percent of Americans report what they perceive as a food allergy, the problem only affects 3 percent of adults and 8 percent of children. Many times, they are experiencing an intolerance, not a true allergy. To distinguish intolerance from allergy, it helps to know that food intolerance is an adverse reaction that has no immune system involvement and is not life-threatening. Some examples include gastrointestinal upset (milk/lactose), nervous system hyperactivity (coffee/caffeine), vascular headache or congestion (wine/sulfites) and skin irritation (orange/citrus). A true food allergy is an immune system overreaction to a specific protein found in food. It can have both immediate and delayed effects, and can vary in severity from person to person. Manifestations of food allergy can include anaphylaxis (hives, flushing, vomiting, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, dizziness and death), atopic dermatitis (eczema rashes), gastrointestinal allergy (vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, oral itching/swelling, esophagitis) and asthma. Food allergy usually begins in infancy or early childhood as the result of both nature (heredity) and nurture (environment). Our immune system is trained from day one to distinguish harmless proteins (self, foods and environment) from harmful proteins (bacteria, viruses, parasites and toxins). In the case of food, a healthy gut is supposed to label a food as harmless the first time it passes through. The food is then ignored in the future. If the gut cell malfunctions, or if a food sneaks by the labeling process (leaks through an unhealthy gut, skin lesion/ rash or unhealthy respiratory tract), other parts of the immune system may misinterpret it as harmful, and then remember the

Anaphylaxis is a systemic, full body, allergic immune response that can be life-threatening. Most people associate the word “anaphylaxis” with hives or trouble swallowing. This is only partially correct. Anaphylaxis can affect all body systems in various combinations and thus may fail to produce a tell-tale hive or swallowing clue. It is better to think of anaphylaxis as a rapid, downhill spiral of symptoms that can involve any body part or organ, generally within minutes to an hour after its trigger (e.g. food). For example, if a food allergic friend ingests something and then suddenly becomes ill with vomiting, diarrhea and dizziness, one should suspect anaphylaxis and not food poisoning or the stomach flu. The same would be true if an individual started having problems with their asthma shortly after eating. Therefore, if a food allergic individual experiences any symptom other than mild discomfort within the first hour of ingesting a suspect food, administer epinephrine and call 911. food to be recognized and acted upon in the future. Food mislabeling by the immune system also seems to have a predilection for certain foods—only eight types of food account for 90 percent of all food allergies (milk, eggs, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish). Some researchers think these foods may resemble pathogens, and once they sneak by, are forever labeled as such. Others speculate that the immune system is confused by our artificially processed food supply. Still others blame our packaged food and fast-food choices, which are cross-contaminated with large amounts of potential allergens and routinely fed to infants and young children. More recently, some are looking at the body’s vitamin D level, which is compromised in modern culture, but necessary for proper immune function. To help prevent allergic sensitization to food, there are some practical measures that parents of babies can take. Consider breastfeeding for the first three months or more with an emphasis on hind-milk to help promote gut balance and immunity (see La Leche League at llli.org). Learn about the eight most common food allergens and plan to introduce them (in consultation with

a doctor) one at a time on a healthy day. Wash hands after handling or eating highallergen foods and before interacting with a baby. Avoid fast food and choose foods with simple ingredients, without warnings of cross-contamination. Seek medical advice sooner than later for chronic gastrointestinal problems, skin problems and respiratory problems, as they can increase the likelihood of food allergy. Develop a good skincare regimen that includes regular bathing, followed by a hypoallergenic skin cream barrier and consider vitamin D supplementation under the supervision of a physician. Once a food allergy manifests, strict avoidance of the food and prompt recognition and treatment of allergic symptoms are the only options. If started early enough (infancy to early childhood), a medically advised elimination diet can help the immune system “forget” it is allergic, allowing reintroduction of milk, egg, soy and wheat 95 percent of the time. Early detection and elimination diets have also shown success with peanuts 20 percent or more of the time. Newer studies report methods for medically monitored food desensitization by wearing an allergen patch or receiving a vaccine. Although encouraging, these methods need to be proven safe and effective before recommending general use. If a food allergy is suspected, it is best to have it detected early and managed by a boardcertified allergist. Lisa Sullivan, M.D., specializes in pediatric and adult allergy, asthma and immunology. s I began to love myself, I found that anguish and emotional suffering are only warning signs that I was living against my own truth. Today, I know, this is AUTHENTICITY. As I began to love myself, I understood how much it can offend somebody as I try to force my desires on this person, even though I knew the time was not right and the person was not ready for it, and even though this person was me. Today I call it RESPECT. As I began to love myself, I stopped craving for a different life, and I could see that everything that surrounded me was inviting me to grow. Today I call it MATURITY. As I began to love myself, I understood that at any circumstance, I am in the right place at the right time, and everything happens at the exactly right moment. So I could be calm. Today I call it SELF-CONFIDENCE. As I began to love myself, I quit stealing my own time, and I stopped designing huge projects for the future. Today, I only do what brings me joy and happiness, things I love to do and that make my heart cheer, and I do them in my own way and in my own rhythm.

Today I call it SIMPLICITY. As I began to love myself, I freed myself of anything that is no good for my health—food, people, things, situations and everything that drew me down and away from myself. At first I called this attitude a healthy egoism. Today I know it is LOVE OF ONESELF. As I began to love myself, I quit trying to always be right, and ever since, I was wrong less of the time. Today I discovered that is MODESTY. As I began to love myself, I refused to go on living in the past and worrying about the future. Now, I only live for the moment, where everything is happening. Today I live each day, day by day, and I call it FULFILLMENT. As I began to love myself, I recognized that my mind can disturb me and it can make me sick. But as I connected it to my heart, my mind became a valuable ally. Today I call this connection WISDOM OF THE HEART. easonal affective disorder (SAD) was formally recognized by clinicians in the 1980s as a form of depression most commonly noticed in the winter. Research shows SAD to affect 4 to 6 percent of the general population with up to 75 percent of these individuals noted to be women. Experts relate SAD to a lack of sunlight alone, so with the onset of the winter months, days become shorter and people are exposed to less sunlight. With days becoming longer in early spring, symptoms of SAD subside. For instance, SAD occurs seven times more often in cloudy states like Washington as oppose to sunny Florida. Symptoms of SAD may include grumpiness, sadness, irritability, increased appetite, weight gain, feelings of tiredness and lack of concentration. Even though we do not know the exact cause of SAD, studies have shown depressive symptoms to be related to issues within our circadian rhythm, melatonin levels and hypothalamus. The circadian rhythm, or body clock, is known to be disrupted by lack of sunlight and may result in depression. The hormone melatonin affects sleep and mood. It is thought that the hypothalamus needs sunlight in order to stimulate the aspect of the brain which controls sleep, mood and appetite, as well as the produc-

tion of serotonin. Those with SAD often have lower levels of serotonin. In 1999, researchers confirmed a direct link between exposure to sunlight and the production of vitamin D. In 2014, a research team, led by Alan Stewart, of the College of Education at the University of Georgia, published their findings in the journal Medical Hypotheses, which correlated taking a supplement of Vitamin D to decreased symptoms of SAD. Vitamin D production occurs when the ultraviolet rays in sunlight strike the skin. Some foods, such as the flesh of fatty fish (salmon, tuna and mackerel) and fish liver oils contain a fair amount of vitamin D. In the U.S., fortified foods such as milk provide a good source of dietary vitamin D. Vitamin D has been shown to be required for a variety of healthy body functions, and lately has been a topic of interest in the treatment of SAD. A blood test is used to determine the level of vitamin D in the body. Vitamin D supplementation in the form of D3 has been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of SAD. Depending on a person’s lab values and symptoms, doses can range from 1,000 to 10,000 international units (IUs). Supplements are readily available and inexpensive. If an individual exhibits feelings of being down, irritable, moody or has trouble sleeping, they may have SAD. Their healthcare provider can check the vitamin D level and prescribe the recommended supplementation as needed. Dr. Leta M. Vaughan, DNP, CNM, is a nurse practitioner with WomancarePC,. By proving that serious chronic illnesses can be reversed by optimizing the things that interact with our bodies on a daily basis, we have the opportunity to profoundly impact the future of our children and of life on this planet.

A—Why Call to Action We Must Document Hope by Beth Lambert, Josie Nelson and Martha Herbert, Ph.D., M.D.

C

urrently, a majority of our children are chronically ill, an exponential increase over previous generations. This epidemic of childhood illness is taking place as we head into an unprecedented crisis of planetary health. Our relationship to the environment has a direct and immediate impact on our health, yet modern health care seems to all but ignore this inconvenient truth. Our children, our “canaries in the coalmine,” are telling us that something must be done, today. We can stop the escalating epidemics of chronic childhood illness and redefine the human relationship with the planet by clearly and scientifically demonstrating that human health is directly correlated with the condition of our surroundings. By proving that serious chronic illnesses can be reversed by optimizing the things that interact with our bodies on a daily basis, we have the opportunity to profoundly impact the future of our children and of life on this planet. Reversing these conditions in children through the proper application of tools and knowledge

already available to us is the goal of the Documenting Hope Project—and the method through which we will inspire millions of people to restore their own health and the health of our planet.

Why we won’t accept the “new normal” of chronically ill children

Many families have refused to believe that the symptom suppression offered by their doctors is all that can be done to help their children. They have gathered into communities to share healing approaches, and many have fully reversed their children’s conditions. Every member of the Documenting Hope Team and Advisory Boards has been profoundly moved by witnessing these transformations from serious sickness back into health. While many doctors might dismiss these recoveries by saying the child “never had the disease in the first place,” we have seen many cases of recovery where these sicknesses were well documented and rigorously diagnosed.

Not A Sentence of Illness

The idea that childhood illnesses, like autism, asthma, attention deficit hyperac-

tivity disorder, and autoimmune diseases, are life sentences has actually never been proven or rigorously tested. It is just a belief system held in conventional medical circles and perpetuated in the media. This perception, exacerbated by a prevailing belief in genetic determinism (the discredited belief that disease is due mainly to genetics), has allowed medicine to slide into complacency, where large numbers of sick children are just accepted as the “new normal.” This prevents us from giving our children the kind of care that can restore their health and full functioning. Few have questioned the veracity of this belief system. Until now. Our approach operates in the spirit of systems biology by appreciating that our bodies and brains are self-organizing systems fully capable of upgrading themselves toward full healing when environmental obstacles are removed, and these systems have what they need—and have been lacking—to operate optimally.

The Program

In essence, the Documenting Hope Recovery Program is a 21st century study of systems biology as a new paradigm for understanding and enabling recovery from chronic illness. This is true “translational science” that links research directly with effective patient care and addresses a massive public health crisis. Beth Lambert is an author, educator and former healthcare consultant. She has monitored and documented the escalating rates of childhood chronic conditions for nearly a decade. She is the founder and executive director of Epidemic Answers, a nonprofit dedicated to reestablishing vibrant health in our children, and the creator and executive producer of The Documenting Hope Project. She will be speaking at The Real Truth About Health Conference, Feb. 2-11 at the Long Island Hilton, in Melville (RealTruthTalks.com). February 2018

Anxiety

—It May Not Be in Your Head at All

W

e have been taught many lessthan-accurate things about our body and the way things work in general. Many of these ideas result in feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, often creating a situation where either suffering or reliance on never-ending usage of medication is necessary. Many complain of the side effects, which can at best be numbing and can actually make our mood much worse. In practice, I find more than 90 percent of mood imbalances, including anxiety, arise from functional issues below our noggins.

Neurotransmitters

It would certainly seem to make sense that our thoughts are created in our mind, but that might not be as straightforward as it appears. Mood and well-being involve a very complex orchestration of many of our body’s intricate systems. Take neurotransmitters, for example. Different neurotransmitters and their levels have 52

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

been shown to have significant impact on what mood state we are in. In fact, most mood-stabilizing medications are toying with the imbalances of these neurotransmitters, most notably serotonin. But where do our neurotransmitters come from? Most are not made in our nerves or brain. The majority are produced by the digestive tract, particularly in the small intestines.

In Our Gut

Perhaps it is gut dysfunction and not nervous disorders that has to do with how we feel. The obvious symptoms of gut disorders are heartburn, reflux, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), indigestion, bloating, gas, loose or hard stools, in/ frequency or urgency. Bloating is particularly important because it is often overlooked. Sometimes a chronic cough, sinus congestion, lump in the throat or post nasal drip are signs of digestive problems. At times, anxiety itself is the only outward sign of a gut issue.

www.namiami.com

Inflammation

Also contained in our gut is the far majority of our immune system. Immunity has a huge impact on our mood and especially anxiety. What is that connection many ask? There are a few different mechanisms. First, immune response involves inflammation. Inflammation can be obvious, such as a back, neck or joint pain, or subtle, such as background chronic inflammation from an unknown source. Obviously, it’s pretty difficult to feel happy when we are hurting, but imagine that a subtle discomfort and mild swelling were pervasive throughout our body (this is chronic or systemic inflammation, and it is very common). How would we feel? Uneasy, aggravated and anxious.

Cortisol

Our immune response is closely related to another response from a different system. When we have inflammation, our body increases the hormone cortisol to

There are many real organic reasons for us to have anxiety, which is completely reversible and not all in our head. It just takes a little work to find out what is out of balance and how to create an appropriate comprehensive strategy to take control of our health. help control and reverse it. Cortisol is related to the medication cortisone or prednisone. Many feel very uncomfortable and have mood imbalances when on these medications. That feeling can be had and compounded with long-term high cortisol levels. Cortisol is also commonly known as a stress hormone because it increases with stress; this just adds to our discomfort.

Nutrient Deficiencies

Another common and subtle reason for anxiety is chronic nutrient deficiencies. Very common to us all but even more so for women is magnesium deficiency. Magnesium is required by our nerves, muscles and many of the body’s processes. It tends to have a calming effect. Obvious signs of magnesium deficiency are muscle pain or twitching, constipation, headaches and difficulty sleeping. Magnesium deficiency is very prevalent, as it is primarily found in green vegetables. Some might say, “I eat plenty of vegetables.” But the question is, “Do you actually digest them?” The most common symptom of poor vegetable digestion is bloating or loose stools.

made in our body by the sun. And while some sunlight is required, more than 90 percent of the U.S. population is deficient in vitamin D. Many of those people work in the sun for a living or reside in sun-soaked states, like Florida, California and Texas. A vitamin by its original definition is a substance required for life that is not made either partially or entirely within the body. Vitamin D is entirely made in the body with just the tiniest pinch of sunlight. Vitamin D is not a vitamin, it is a hormone. There, I said it. And that’s why it has so many powerful effects and functions. Medical deficiency of vitamin D is often considered below 30. The normal range is often expressed as 30 to 100! That’s a huge range. Do you think if your level is 31, you will feel the same as if it were 70plus? Most functional medicine practitioners believe a minimum vitamin D level is 50, with optimal ranges exceeding 70. There are many real organic reasons for us to have anxiety, which is completely reversible and not all in our head. It just takes a little work to find out what is out of balance and how to create an appropriate comprehensive strategy to take control of our health. Source: Dr. David Pollack, of Pollack Wellness Institute, PollackWellness.com.

B Vitamins

Another common deficiency is any of the B vitamins. Vitamin B1, B6, B9 and B12 are the most associated with mood imbalances. B12 in particular is pervasively deficient for a few important and sinister reasons. First, vegetarians and vegans in general have B12 deficiency, as it is not very present in their food. Those over 55 years old, tend to have difficulty absorbing B12 due to changes in their digestive tracts and something called pernicious anemia, a common auto-immune issue that prevents people from absorbing B12. Besides making us feel anxious, B12 deficiency causes wide-ranging issues, including low energy and a type of anemia. The last and “sinister” reason for B12 and even B9 deficiency is a common genetic disorder affecting 40 to 60 percent of the U.S. population. The gene involved is called MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase). The problem is it affects a process called methylation. Most affected by the methylation issue is B12 and B9. This gene can be tested for in blood work and requires supplementation of methylated B vitamins.

Vitamin D Deficiency
