ecently I had the opportunity to enjoy an extraordinary movie, Miracles from Heaven. It recounts the true story of Christy Beam’s 10 year old daughter Anna who had a neardeath experience and was later cured of an incurable rare digestive disorder. The film stars Jennifer Garner, Queen Latifah and many others. Anna, a very energetic child, overflowing with life, fell ill and was subsequently diagnose with the incurable disease of pseudo-obstruction motility disorder, preventing her from eating solid foods and having to use feeding tubes for nutrition. What impacted me about this story was the unexpected message which the title alludes to. What or whom are the Miracles from Heaven? I’ll let you find that out on your own since this is truly a must see and I would hate to spoil it for you, but I’ll share what I believe was my Miracle from Heaven experience. As I’ve previously shared, I had a kidney transplant 24 years ago, this past July. Because of this, I feel a type of kinship with Anna and her mom, having spent many years struggling with my own health while mom did all she could to find me the path to recovery, even moving the family to Miami, in order to be closer to the doctors treating me. Special treatments, medication side effects, and even sleepless nights of unbearable discomfort and pain were all part of our reality back then. But here is the Miracle. Recently during a visit to my nephrologists, my friends and I decided to get some breakfast at the local coffee shop/cafeteria before the appointment. Walking in, we got caught behind a slow moving woman with a cane. We all looked at each other, and as if she felt our energy, she turned around and waved us passed her. Angie, one of my oldest friends and a woman with the biggest heart you could even meet, placed her hand on the shoulder of this stranger and offered her reassurance that we were not in a hurry, that her pace was fine, and that we all would be in her position soon enough. For obvious reasons, this woman, who we’ll call Joan, felt Angie’s sincerity and proceeded to share her predicament with her. Joan explained how she had just moved herself to a senior facility in hopes of not burdening her family. Being her first day there, she felt vulnerable, lost, and a bit sad. Her eyes welled with tears as Angie listened intently to her. Feeling her pain, Angie reassured her and proceeded to help her with her food selection, paying and then sat her down at our table to share breakfast. Joan, turns out, is a very special soul. She is a vibrant, independent woman, who turned out to be incredibly wise. She shared her life story, made us laugh and imparted her secret to a happy life: “every morning I make sure I leave my house with two things,” she said, “a shower and a smile.” Who can go wrong with that?! After many other such insights, Angie walked her outside and waited with her until her ride arrived. We thought we had rescued her, but the fact was she made our day. Today we are still talking about the experience. A few days later Angie received a note from Joan and we decided to share it here. And there’s the Miracle from Heaven of how we truly affect each other. And if we keep your eyes open, we’ll realize that each of our lives is filled with Joan’s. SEE and realize that miracles come in all forms and when least expected.

he kinds of things that happen when you meditate do have effects throughout the body, not just the brain” states John Denninger, who led a five-year study by Harvard Medical School. The study concluded that mind-body techniques can switch on and off some genes related to stress and immunity. Additionally, a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that twelve weeks of yoga led to higher levels of diseasefighting antioxidants compared with running, cycling and other forms of exercise. These studies come as no surprise to those who are already enjoying the benefits of a regular yoga practice. Delayed Kindergarten Reduces Attention Deficit

D

elaying kindergarten enrollment for one year shows significant mental health benefits for children, according to a Stanford University study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research. Reviewing results from a mental health survey completed by more than 35,000 Danish parents, the researchers saw that youngsters held back from kindergarten for as little as one year showed a 73 percent reduction in inattentiveness and hyperactivity for an average child at age 11, compared to children enrolled the year earlier. Measuring inattentiveness and hyperactivity reflect a child’s ability to selfregulate. The generally accepted theory is that young people that are able to stay focused, sit still and pay attention longer tend to do much better in school. “This is some of the most convincing evidence we’ve seen to support what U.S. parents and policymakers have already been doing—choosing to delay entry into kindergarten,” says Stanford Graduate School of Education Professor Thomas S. Dee. In addition to improved mental health, children with later kindergarten enrollment dates also exhibited superior emotional and social skills. The number of U.S. children entering kindergarten at age 6 instead of 5 has progressively increased to about 20 percent, according to the study. Many parents are opting to delay kindergarten enrollment for a year to give their children a leg up in physical and emotional maturity and social skills.

Grape Juice Boosts Memory and Driving Skills

R

esearch from the UK University of Leeds has confirmed that drinking just one glass of grape juice a day increases spatial memory and driving abilities. The researchers attribute the brain boosting benefits to the polyphenols in the grapes. The study followed 25 healthy mothers between the ages of 40 and 50. Each had young children and worked more than 30 hours a week. The mothers drank 12 ounces of Concord grape juice every day for 12 weeks and had their driving skills tested before and after the study period using a computer simulator. Louise Dye, Ph.D., a professor at the University of Leeds and senior author of the study, notes, “This research is very promising, as it suggests that the cognitive benefits associated with Concord grape juice are not exclusive to adults with early memory decline. We saw these benefits even after the grape juice was no longer being consumed, suggesting a longterm effect of dietary flavonoids.” 14

Breastfed Babies Have Fewer Colds and Ear Infections

A

study from the University of Texas has found that increased breastfeeding decreases ear infections among nursing children. The researchers followed 367 babies between 1 and 12 months old from 2008 through 2014. The scientists analyzed family history traits of smoking, ear infections, breastfeeding and formula feeding. Nose and throat mucosal samples were taken throughout the study period to identify infections, and parents informed the researchers whenever the baby experienced an infection. The study was led by Dr. Tasnee Chonmaitree, a pediatrics professor from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. “We clearly showed that frequent upper respiratory infections, carriage of bacteria in the nose and lack of breastfeeding are major risk factors for ear infections,” he states. “Prolonged breastfeeding was associated with significant reductions in both colds and ear infections, a common complication of colds.”


Aromatherapy Soothes Prenatal Sun Exposure Allergies Lowers Asthma Risk

R

esearch from Korea’s Chung-Ang University has found that inhaling aromatherapy infusions comprising a combination of sandalwood, frankincense and ravensara for five minutes twice daily significantly reduces symptoms of allergies after seven days. The researchers tested 54 men and women, half of which were tested using a placebo of almond oil. Total nasal symptom score (TNSS) and rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ) results were both significantly lower in the aromatherapy group. TNSS scores decreased by more than half and RQLQ scores decreased by more than 60 percent. Scores for fatigue and sleep quality also improved in the aromatherapy group. “These findings indicate that inhalation of certain aromatherapy oils help relieve perennial allergic rhinitis symptoms, improve rhinitis-specific quality of life and reduce fatigue in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis,” Chung-Ang University’s Seo Yeon Choi and Kyungsook Park explain in their paper.

esearch has shown that children with mothers that live in sunnier locations during their second trimester are significantly less likely to have asthma than other children. A consortium of researchers from the University of Kansas, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology analyzed data from both hospitals and national surveys to determine sunlight exposure for the mothers. Increased exposure to sunlight increases levels of natural vitamin D. “We’re not looking at sunny places versus non-sunny places,” clarifies David Slusky, a University of Kansas assistant professor of economics. “We looked at the relative differences of the level of sunlight at a particular place at a particular time of year.”

esearch from the University of Groningen, in The Netherlands, has found that young adults between 19 and 22 years old that don’t sleep well may have more chronic pain later in life. The researchers followed 1,750 people for three years. About 50 percent of the participants that had sleep problems at the beginning of the study still had them at the end of the study. Roughly 38 percent of those reported chronic pain after three years. This compares to 14 percent of those that didn’t have sleep problems at the start of the research, but reported chronic pain at its conclusion. Overall, the study found that sleep problems were associated with more musculoskeletal pains, headaches and abdominal pain. The relationship occurred in both men and women, but was stronger among women.

Legumes Facilitate Weight Loss

review of 21 clinical trials has found that just one daily serving of legumes can facilitate an average drop of threequarters of a pound over a six-week period. Published in the journal Obesity, the research analyzed results from studies that tested a total of 940 men and women eating about three-quarters of a cup of beans, lentils, chickpeas and other legumes each day. The subjects reported feeling nearly one-third fuller on average after eating about 5.6 ounces of these foods with their meals, compared with a control group’s diet. These beneficial legumes may also reduce body fat percentages. According to senior study author and physician John Sievenpiper, Ph.D., of St. Michael’s Hospital’s Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Center and the University of Toronto, “Ninety percent of weight-loss diets fail, resulting in weight regain, which may be due in part to hunger and food cravings. Knowing which foods make people feel fuller longer may help them lose weight and keep it off.”

To assess the quality of vegan leather shoes, she advises, “Shoppers can feel the material and look at the grain to see if it’s faux; with faux, the grain will show a repeating pattern. Also, look for labels noting materials either inside or on the bottom of shoes.” Olsen notes that an online search for vegan fashion will yield everything from adult couture to baby clothes. Scrambling Species Climate Change Favors Some Birds over Others Decades of data show that climate change is manipulating the way avian species move across continents. For instance, the orchard oriole is losing prime habitat in the South, but gaining more up north. Thousands of species worldwide face the same dilemma. Specific birds need a particular habitat, such as open spaces or groves of trees, and some of their traditionally preferred spots are becoming unlivable. England’s Durham University ecologist Phillip Stephens, along with researchers from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the U.S. Geological Survey, have compiled nearly half a century’s worth of occurrence data from thousands of citizen scientists. Birders submitted their observations to the Pan-European Common Birds Monitoring Scheme and the North American Breeding Bird Survey for 145 terrestrial bird species native to Europe and 380 species native to the United States. “We used that information to generate a prior expectation for whether the species would’ve been advantaged or disadvantaged by climate change,” says Stephens. The predictions were compared with actual bird abundance data from 1980 through 2010, and the populations that were expected to lose suitable habitat declined, while those expected to find their habitats improve increased. Hope for a New Generation Despite being less confident than their elders, a new study by PsychTests.com, in Montreal, reveals that Millennials (those born between 1980 and 2000) are an ambitious and tenacious generation that continues to prove potential critics wrong. Labeled by some as self-entitled, arrogant and immature from being coddled by hovering parents, the company’s research says that Millennials are not afraid to push themselves to achieve lofty goals, work hard or take on difficult challenges. Collecting data from 1,035 people that took their Ambition Test, the researchers looked at the differences between Millennials, Generation X (born between 1960 and 1980) and Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1960) in terms of their levels of aspiration, persistence and sense of self-efficacy. The study reveals that while Millennials lagged a little behind the other two generations on some factors related to ambition, the potential of these young adults should not be underestimated. “One can argue that Millennials’ hopeful and determined nature is a case of idealism,” explains Ilona Jerabek, Ph.D., president of PsychTests. “Some have just started out in the workforce, so they’re eager to prove themselves, which could also mean that at some point they’ll be blindsided by the reality of what it’s like to be out there in the real world.” 18

Now, scientists are studying the effects of reading on the brain with MRIs, polls, surveys and experiments. The results indicate that readers of fiction are more empathetic toward others. By engaging with a story, they are temporarily placing themselves in a character’s shoes, thus fostering empathy in real life, and literary reading amplifies this effect. According to a Stanford University study, reading a challenging book also helps us become smarter, as well as more empathetic. Low-Cost Jewelry May Harbor Cadmium In recent years, the European Commission has banned cadmium in all jewelry sold in Europe, but those shopping for low-cost jewelry in North America from popular fashion chains may be wearing products made with cadmium, a heavy metal that can be particularly toxic for kids. There are no known risks for people that wear contaminated jewelry, but swallowing or chewing on a piece containing high concentrations of the toxic metal could allow it to seep into the body. James Van Loon, director of risk management at Health Canada’s consumer product safety branch, says that children’s bodies more readily absorb the toxic metal, and because they are more likely to put things in their mouths, jewelry that is marketed to those under 15 should contain virtually no cadmium. Dr. Gérald Zagury, who performed tests and has published several studies on heavy metals in jewelry, says one sample contained the highest amount of cadmium ever reported in Canada for such a product. “It’s pretty close to pure cadmium,” he says. According to Health Canada, cadmium is cheap and melts at a lower point than more commonly used zinc, lowering energy costs for product makers. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, cadmium is a known carcinogen that can also lead to kidney failure, bone loss and other complications in those that are chronically exposed over time.

Circuses Cease Exotic Animal Acts The Ringling Brothers Circus made good on a promise to retire their last contingent of performing elephants to the Center for Elephant Conservation, in Polk City, Florida, with the last such show streamed worldwide in May. While Ringling will retain the services of tigers, lions, leopards, horses, camels, dogs and kangaroos, the Mexican Congress has voted to prohibit exotic animals under big tops across their country. That means no more tigers jumping through hoops, elephants used as props or monkeys dressed in tiny outfits. Sikkim Now a Wholly Organic State Sikkim, the northeastern Indian state located between Bhutan and Nepal, has rid its agricultural land of pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified crops and other artificial inputs on around 75,000 hectares, or about 300 square miles, of agricultural land, making it its country’s first organic state. Instead, farmers use natural alternatives such as green manure and compost. Twelve years ago, the Pawan Chamling-led government decided to make Sikkim an organic farming state through a declaration in the legislative assembly. After the entry of chemical inputs for farmland was restricted and their sale banned, farmers had no option but to go organic.

Scientists warn that if left unchecked, algae blooms could harm pets that play in the lake, fish or other wildlife. Dense blooms in 2013 killed more than 120 manatees. People are also advised to avoid swimming in water with algae blooms, as it can be harmful if ingested. nergy and vibration are the essence of everything. It is easy to see and feel the effects of energy, both positive and negative. For example, a popular video was recently shared across social media showing a man laughing really hard on a crowded subway car. At first, others regarded him with suspicion but soon his positive energy infected them all and the entire subway car was consumed with joy and laughter. In fact the energetic effect was so contagious that people watching the video across social media also were filled with joy and laughter. Unfortunately, the same contagious effect is true of negative energy trapped in our homes, offices and public spaces. These energies not only affect our environment, they affect our bodies, our emotions, and our minds. Here are just a few types of energy disturbances: Negative vortexes—these are usually located in the room or area least used. This energy is draining and depleting and may cause health issues. Cats spend time in this area, because they are trying to protect their family from the negative energy. Geopathic stress—this relates to the earth’s energy and its effect on human health. One symptom caused by this type of negative energy is interrupted sleep. It can also have a detrimental effect on plants and trees.

How does one heal the negative energies that are causing disturbances in their world? Through the use of dowsing. How Therapeutic Yoga Can Lead to Mental Wellness by Ghada Osman

I

have a client, let’s call him John, who was telling me about the anxiety that he had been experiencing lately. “Where do you feel that anxiety?” I asked. John was perplexed. “What do you mean?” “How do you know you’re anxious? What is it in your body that feels different?”“Oh,” John replied. “I don’t feel it in my body. I feel it in my mind. I have all these racing thoughts.” “Are you sure?” I persisted. As John nodded, I invited him to close his eyes and scan his body. How did his legs feel, his belly, his chest? “Wow,” John responded, surprised. “Now I get what you’re asking. My legs feel kinda heavy. I have butterflies in my stomach. My chest feels tight, like it’s hard to breathe, ” he shared. I explained to John that we first feel emotions in our body, and then our mind assigns justifications for them. Our physical sensations are primary; our thoughts are secondary. That explains why sometimes it’s after we notice that we feel down, is when we begin to try to figure out why that might be happening. John’s initial response to my question is fairly typical. Most of us are trained to value our thoughts over our physical sensations. When our bodies scream out in pain, our first recourse is to remove that sensation via the use of prescription painkillers, or alcohol and other drugs. This is not to suggest that painkillers don’t have their place, but intense emotions and pain are also messages that our bodies 22

are sending us. Nowhere is the ignoring of physical sensations more pronounced than in the treatment of mental and emotional health. It is estimated that 18% of Americans have an anxiety disorder, and 6.7% a depression disorder (National Institute of Mental Health). When it comes to treatment, the norm is to pave the path to mental well-being through talk therapy, focusing on secondary thoughts instead of – rather than in addition to – primary physical sensations. Even when we talk about “the mind-body connection,” we are acting as if the mind is not part of the body. Focusing on thoughts can certainly help us gain insight into a suitable course of action. Yet we also know that insight doesn’t necessarily bring about change. Have you or someone close to you know that you needed to lose weight for your health, but been unable to find the motivation to do it? Similarly, we can know that we have symptoms of anxiety, or depression, or PTSD, but moving through them typically doesn’t come from just deciding to do so. Deeper involvement – usually directly with the body – is necessary, and yoga is one way of bringing that about. Scholarly research on the role of yoga in mental health has increased significantly over the past few years. One Duke University 2013 study (published in Frontiers in Affective Disorders and Psychosomatic Research) found evidence that yoga provides benefits for depression, anxiety, schizophrenia (when used alongside medication), ADHD, and sleep problems. A 2012 study from Boston University Medical Center and its partners (published in Medical Hypotheses) suggested that yoga does that through increasing the activity of the neurotransmitter GABA. A client with mild symptoms of anxiety or depression may find relief after attending some general yoga classes. But sessions with an instructor who has been trained specifically in therapeutic yoga for mental health issues are by far the best option, as yoga practices do not fall into a “one size fits all” model. What relieves depression in one person may bring about anxiety in another, and a trained instructor can help a student to design an optimal, individualized plan. At the Joey Travolta Film School and summer camp, in Lafayette, California, kids work together to make a movie; they start with a script, create sets, operate the camera, act and direct. At the Hunter School, in Romney, New Hampshire, kids dealing with attention challenges can nurture mindbody awareness, energetic mindfulness and sensory integration. It all helps them get to know themselves and relate better to others. Outdoor skills can help teens develop healthy risk-taking behaviors, as well as teach resilience, perseverance and self-reliance. SheJumps (SheJumps. org), in Salt Lake City, offers young women 6 to 18 years old an opportunity to master outdoor living skills, boost confidence and encourage leadership via collaborating with strong female role models. Fun activities include mountain biking, skiing and trailblazing.

Leadership

Over time, experiential learning can help youths develop leadership skills. Lander, Wyoming’s National Outdoor Leadership School, a gap-year program for high school graduates taking a year off before college, offers courses lasting two weeks, several months or even a full year. Activities include sea kayaking, Alaskan mountain and glacier climbing and wilderness medicine. Teens already on track and wanting to develop additional leadership skills can tap into motivational speaker and self-help author Tony Robbins’ annual Unleash the Power Within youth leadership program event. Groups of youths 14 to 17 years old collectively participate to create individual

breakthroughs, move beyond fears and limiting beliefs, accomplish goals and realize true desires. Application requirements include a good academic record, at least 20 hours of community service and a guidance counselor’s recommendation. Robbins maintains, “Grow and give is what life is all about.”

Service to Others

A way for youngsters 5 to 19 years old to become empowered is by joining a 4-H group in urban, suburban or rural areas. If we envision a farm kid raising a calf to show at the state fair, that’s still one facet of today’s 4-H, but far from the entire scope. Founded in 1902, 4-H is a global nonprofit dedicated to learning by doing; specialties now range from computer science and graphic design to leadership, healthy living and the performing arts. Positive mentoring by adults and developing community spirit ground 4-H clubs, camps and programs. Research by Tufts University’s Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development and America’s landgrant colleges and universities shows that people with a 4-H background are more likely to give back to their communities than others (see Tinyurl. com/YouthDevelopmentStudy). For Grammy-winner Jennifer Nettles, of Nashville, 4-H meant learning to perform at an early age, even flying to Chicago to do it. “I don’t know that I would be where I am today without 4-H,” she says. “Mentors there help you. They helped me with the skills of performing and learning about being on stage; they also taught me the importance of giving back.”

Sustainable Sustenance

Growing food for themselves and others can be a great adventure for teens, while fostering resourcefulness, perseverance and ecological awareness. Seventeenyear-old Katie Stagliano launched Katie’s Krops, in Summerville, South Carolina, several years ago based on her desire to fight hunger by growing food for people that need it. Today, the enterprise offers grants for youth in any area to start and maintain a local garden, provided they give away the produce to the hungry.

The initiative has grown to more than 50 gardens around the U.S. Both Mobile Urban Growers, in Mobile, Alabama, and Closer to Earth, in Oklahoma City, empower youth through exercising organic gardening skills, environmental and food justice advocacy and personal mentorship. Empowering experiences for teens don’t have to cost a lot or involve travel. “Dream big, but start small. Look around your own backyard, in your community,” says Borba. “Teens can learn to pay it forward in all kinds of ways. They can get together with their peers and take on a doable project to help others. They may even need to start by learning to self-regulate and manage stress by getting away from their phones and instead being outside getting exercise.” Casual family activities can provide opportunities for conversations about what teens want in life or what they’re worried about, and that opens the door for adults to step up to help mentor and empower their children. “Boys are more likely to talk while they’re doing something, like shooting baskets with you in the driveway,” observes Borba. “Girls are more likely to talk if it’s one-on-one.” Positive parents actively listen and then clarify what they heard from their teens, says Herman-Saccio. This information helps point the way forward, to more interactive dialogue, brainstorming, problem-solving, helpful experiences and eventually, youth empowerment. ven mainstream media have picked up on the many physical and mental benefits of walking, including weight loss, reduced stress, increased energy and better sleep, and that’s only the beginning. These additional compelling effects may well catalyze us to consistently step out for a daily walk, understanding that cumulative steps count, too. For more inspiration, check out this month’s race walking at the Summer Olympics. Walking helps heart health and diabetes. According to the U.S. Surgeon General’s Call to Action on Walking program launched last fall, the risk of heart disease and diabetes can be significantly reduced via an average of 22 minutes a day of brisk walking. “Physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, certain cancers, osteoporosis, cognitive decline and even depression,” says Dr. JoAnn Manson, chief of the division of preventive medicine at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “Can you imagine if there was a pill that could simultaneously have all those benefits? Everyone would be clamoring for it.” Walking reduces anxiety and clears thinking. The results of a national survey of nearly 3,000 women between the ages of 42 and 52 published in the

journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that those that walked as part of a regular physical activity showed fewer signs of depression compared with inactive women. The more physical activity a woman logged, the less likely she was to exhibit such symptoms, suggesting that moderateto-intense levels of exercise may help protect against mental illness. The survey further revealed that 85 percent believe walking helps reduce any present anxiety and feelings of depression, while two-thirds reported that walking stimulates their thinking. Walking facilitates doctor-patient communication. Columbus, Ohio-based Walk with a Doc (WalkWithADoc.org) helps organize free walking events each month via 230 chapters nationwide. They’re led by physicians and other healthcare authorities. “It’s a casual forum in which to communicate and also learn about the health benefits of walking,” says Executive Director Rachael Habash, who’s aiming for 350 chapters by year’s end. When doctors emphasize the benefits of exercise, patients tend to listen. Walking boosts life performance. “Until the late 1960s, 90 percent of America’s children that lived up to a mile away walked to school. Today, that figure is 30 percent,” says Sheila

Experts warn that less walking by youngsters can create sedentary habits and lead to shortened life spans. Daily walks to school boost cognitive performance in students, according to Mary Pat King, the National Parent Teacher Association director of programs and projects. Dr. Richard Jackson, a pediatrician, professor and chair of Environmental Health Sciences at the School of Public Health at University of California, Los Angeles,. and former environmental health director at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, reports that walking improves children’s learning ability, concentration, moods and creativity. Even lifelong walkers are moved to walk more by using a pedometer to track their steps and distance traveled, says Dr. Lauren Elson, a physical medicine and rehabilitation instructor at Harvard Medical School, who is also the medical editor of the recent Harvard Special Health Report Walking for Health (Health.Harvard.edu/walk). A meta-review of 26 studies found that using the device raised physical activity levels by nearly 27 percent, adding about 2,500 steps per day. Most stores that sell exercise equipment offer inexpensive pedometers, while smartphone users can download an app such as Moves, Breeze or Pedometer++. Apple’s iOS includes the free app Health. Walking leads to meaningful exchanges. Social connections and honest conversations between two people can be aided by walking outside instead of sitting inside. Clay Cockrell, a licensed clinical social worker in New York City, began walking with clients 12 years ago. He notes that casual venues like parks have been especially helpful for men. “They sometimes have a more difficult time making eye contact in sessions. Outside, they are looking where they are going, looking

at nature, other people—the pressure is less. My own health has improved, as well,” he says. He shares ideas with the public and other therapists at WalkAndTalk.com to maximize the benefits. He sees moving the body forward along a path as a metaphor for moving forward in life. s much as 40 percent of food produced in the U.S. is wasted, even as one in six Americans goes hungry. Instead of feeding people better, we are feeding the city dump. Of all types of trash, food consumes the most space in our municipal landfills, followed by plastic and paper. Rotting food then releases harmful methane, a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide. While food waste is a big problem, social entrepreneurs see a big opportunity. Around the country, they are working to reduce, recover and rethink discarded food valued at more than $160 billion a year. In the process, they are not only cutting food costs, but also creating jobs and fighting climate change. University of Maryland College Park alumna Cam Pascual co-founded the nonprofit Food Recovery Network (FRN) after watching hundreds of pounds of food hit the trash in her campus dining hall every night. Pascual and her colleagues mobilized a volunteer network to shuttle leftovers from the university to soup kitchens, donating 200 meals a night to feed the hungry. In the last five years, FRN has recovered more than 1 million pounds of food from 184 campuses in 42 states, proving that ingenuity and philanthropy can together fight the food waste travesty. “There are two major barriers to recovering leftover food; one is awareness, like helping businesses to understand the laws that protect them from liability,” says Pascual, the organization’s current director of innovation and operations. “The other is the labor involved. Universities are the perfect ecosystem for food recovery because college students have flexible schedules and are community service-minded, offering a ready supply of

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture recently set a goal of slashing food waste in half by 2030, with several supporting bills approaching the floor in Congress. The EPA food recovery hierarchy calls for reducing food waste first and foremost, with recovering food to feed people or animals as a fallback and utilizing landfills only as a last resort. “It’s one thing to set goals, but to realize those reductions in food waste, we have to change our behavior,” says Jonathan Bloom, author of American Wasteland: How America Throws Away Nearly Half of Its Food (and What We Can Do About It). Farms and households are the two largest generators of food waste, according to Bloom, whose blog at WastedFood.com offers dozens of beneficial tips for keeping food out of the trash bin. Fighting food waste starts before we go to the grocery. Bloom recommends consumers organize cupboards to know what’s already in stock, plan meals and stick to the shopping list. Post-purchase, easy tips include serving smaller portions, freezing leftovers and sharing surplus with friends and neighbors. Bloom’s website fans contribute more ideas like mixing veggie scraps into pet food or making them into soup stock. The same inner awareness and skill set that give birth to the creative process can be applied to all aspects of life. Only through creative acts can we rise above unworkable paradigms, group thinking and earlier conditioning to create new and more fluid stories that grow from revised thoughts, beliefs, choices and attitudes that mature from the inside out. Deep, compassionate understanding of how we arrived at this point allows us to shed restrictions. It begins with facing the whys and wherefores of our most intimate consciousness.

How do male and female energies play into this? Everyone possesses both masculine and feminine energies; neither is better or less valuable than the other. Doing and acting characterize masculine energy, which makes things. It builds, structures, orders and files. Being characterizes the feminine, womb-like

energy, pregnant with possibilities and subsequent manifested outcomes. The capacities to imagine, feel and receive also are feminine. In the dance with the masculine, the harmony of these feminine qualities is the primal desire for and the impulse of creativity itself. When the masculine and feminine energies are balanced and intimately joined, they express the ability to act, create, manifest, build and bring order. When we learn how to balance them, we become more creative and effective, individually and collectively. We are better at meeting challenges and responding to opportunities.

How does chauvinism block creativity? Chauvinism, an elevation of masculine over feminine energy, would separate us from our feelings. It does violence to femininity and castrates legitimate masculinity. The mildest trace of such subordination diminishes and reduces primal creative energies to second place, so that nothing new can arrive. Civilization suffers from this systemic disorder to the degree that we believe our needs won’t be met unless we are controlling or relying disproportionately on action principles. A culture that elevates doing over being is ignorant of how to pop the clutch and shift into neutral, and so keeps driving down the same road without hope of changing direction. When spirituality was more alive inside religious traditions, we honored the sanctity of the Sabbath and the importance of putting aside doing in order to be intimate with the mystery of life. It’s what breathes new life into our thoughts and feelings, arousing body, mind and spirit to new heights. Every creator understands that all creativity is a gift of the feminine energy and a gift of the gods. Integrative masculine energies are always constellated around such a gift. Allowing ourselves to become intimate with a greater state of being rather than doing, we open ourselves to receiving a new relationship with life. Japanese healthcare providers prescribe shinrin-yoku, meaning, “walking in forests to promote health” or “forest bathing”. Its intent is to use sight, sound and smell to connect with nature through stressreducing, meditative walks. Based on a program created by the Morikami Japanese Gardens, in Delray Beach, Florida, Washington state’s Bloedel Reserve, on Bainbridge Island, conducts Strolls for Well-Being. Participants sign up for a free, 10-week session of 12 self-guided walks and three group meetings. Tea Wellness classes and tastings of fair trade heirloom varieties are a big draw at Light of Day Organics, in Traverse City, Michigan. They’re taught by founder and horticulturist Angela Macke, a registered nurse. It’s the only dual-certified organic and Demeter Biodynamic commercial grower of tea plants in North America. The Boiron Medicinal Garden at the Rodale Institute, in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, emphasizes the importance of plants in homeopathy. Maggie Saska, plant production specialist with the research farm, explains, “Walking tours with educational signage in the garden let visitors know which species to look for when planting their own organic healing garden. Plants from a store may not be organically grown or of the correct species,” although a nursery may afford more options. Christophe Merville, D.Pharm., Boiron USA director of education and pharmacy development, attests that many familiar plants can offer benefits beyond beauty, such as reducing stress, promoting healing or easing congestion. He cautions, “People think plants are naturally safe, but they can be dangerous. St. John’s wort extract, for example, can relieve mild depression, but interacts with prescription medicines. It also reacts to light, so users may experience rashes from sun exposure. “Lemon balm can be made into an antioxidant tea. It can be grown in a garden, on a balcony or indoors, and combines well with chamomile or lavender. We like it for helping to relieve anxiety or to improve mental performance.” Merville suggests steeping German chamomile tea for relaxing sleep. He says breathing in the steam helps a stuffy nose. When used as a compress, it can relieve pain and itch from rashes. “Don’t drink too much or make it too concentrated,” he warns, because of its blood-

t age 6, climate change activist Xiuhtezcatl Martinez gave his first speech to a packed crowd in his hometown of Boulder, Colorado. Raised in the Aztec tradition, he was taught that as indigenous people, they are descendants of the land and inherit a duty to protect it. “I felt such sadness that my generation inherited this crisis to clean up. That night, I saw that those emotions could be channeled into action and my voice could make a difference,” says Martinez, founder and youth director of the nonprofit Earth Guardians. Ten years later, his impassioned message has sparked a global movement. More than 2,000 “youth crews” from Bhutan to Brazil are fighting climate change and improving their communities in other ways. These activists aren’t yet old enough to vote, but are still making their voices heard by global policymakers. On their behalf, Martinez delivered a plea to representatives from 192 countries at the United Nations General Assembly meeting on climate change last year, asking for stronger measures to protect both the planet and its people. He particularly pointed to the ever-increasing “climate refugees” that have lost their homes to rising oceans and other havoc caused by Earth’s warming trend. Although Martinez serves on President Obama’s youth council, he

and 20 other young plaintiffs filed a landmark lawsuit earlier this year against the federal government for failing to protect its citizens from climate change. The plaintiffs are seeking a court order requiring America’s president to establish a national plan to decrease atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide to “safe” levels by 2100. At home, Martinez is working with Boulder County community and environmental organizations to locally eliminate pesticides from parks, charge for plastic bags at retail, regulate coal ash emissions and ban fracking. HANDLE WILD THINGS WITH CARE How to Help Injured Animals

hen encountering a bird or animal that appears to be abandoned, take only minimal steps to help. “People mean well but a lot of rescues we see, didn’t need help,” says Lacy Campbell, wildlife care center operations manager for the Audubon Society of Portland, Oregon. Make sure the animal is away from traffic or predators, and then call a local wildlife rehabilitator before taking further action, especially if the animal is injured.

Baby squirrels can fall out of the nest. “Leave him at the base of the tree,” says Jennifer Keats Curtis, author of the children’s book Squirrel Rescue. “Mom will rebuild the nest before coming to get her baby. If it’s cold, put it in a box with a towel. Once squirrels have been treated as a pet, they can’t be released.” Tiny, not-yet-feathered nestlings should be returned home; it’s a myth that human scent poses a problem. If the nest is out of reach or can’t be

located, make one with a box and soft cloth. Put it in the tree, so the parents can resume feeding. Leave the area so as not to frighten them. “After young robins, scrub jays, crows and owls leave the nest, they typically spend up to a week on the ground before they can fly,” says Campbell. “At night, the parents will escort the fully feathered fledglings to safety beneath a bush.” In parks, ducks and geese may nest away from the water. Mama will lead her babies to the pond, even across busy streets. If it’s safe, stop the car to halt traffic, act as their crossing guard, and then resume driving. A box turtle operates on innate GPS. “It lives in an area the size of a football field,” explains Curtis. “It will go onward, no matter how many times people try to redirect it. If injured by a car or lawn mower, the shell can be mended by a rehab center.” Bunnies eat at dusk and dawn. Inbetween, the nest may look abandoned. “Wild baby rabbits are difficult to keep alive if injured,” says Curtis. “At sundown, see if mom returns; if not, they need a wildlife rehab expert.” A lone, young raccoon is either old enough to climb a tree by itself or the mother will carry it. If we feed a raccoon, it will become a beggar. Opossums are dramatic actors. When cornered, they hiss and fall over and play dead in a coma-like state for up to four hours. Check back later. For unexpected meetings, stay calm. “Make sure there’s an escape route for the animal,” says Place. “With foxes or coyotes, throw sticks or small rocks, but don’t hit the animal. Make yourself look large and yell.” With snakes, sidestep away slowly for more than six feet before walking in the other direction. Bears require a different response. “Speak in a low voice so the bear realizes you are not prey. Never climb a tree,” says Place. “Bears know the terrain, can run faster than a horse and can climb trees, too. Sidestep away, remaining carefully upright, calm and unthreatening. If the bear moves toward you, keep talking until he moves away. Running kicks in its prey drive.” Yellowstone Park regulations require visitors to stay 25 yards away from most wildlife and 100 yards away from bears and wolves. T

he door we choose to enter on the path towards happiness is a very individual experience, yet there’s one key to open that door. If you took a survey on what makes people happy, you’ll receive a variety of responses such as; health, family, marital status, career success, a new car and the most popular answer, which is being 10 pounds lighter. What if happiness stemmed from only one source? All of the answers listed above are based on external sources which are ultimately outside of our control. For example, we can influence our health by making better food choices, getting enough rest and controlling stress yet we have all heard of “healthy” people suddenly getting an illness or dying. While our success can be based on the quality and quantity of effort we expend, that won’t guarantee monetary remuneration. My point is that the right sized body, right house or right car won’t guarantee a sense of balance and well-being, especially because despite our best efforts, things are outside of our control. The source of happiness comes from within. What we feel and what we think dictates the quality of our life and the degree to which we can enjoy it. The answer is inside each of us because we are the interpreters of our lives. The only thing that we truly have control over are the thoughts and feelings we have over the episodes in our lives. In Victor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning, the author survives the intolerable conditions at Auschwitz by keeping his mind focused while controlling how he felt and how he responded to the circumstances during his time in the concentration camp. Controlling our thoughts and feelings seems like an easy task. It takes practice and determination to be the master of your thoughts which is probably why there are over 480,000 self-help books sold on Amazon, most of which focus on the path to finding happiness. Managing the monkey mind is not

easy, especially when an undesirable event such as losing one’s job or getting a divorce triggers that little rascal on a branch hopping rampage. When the monkey mind is driving the bus we can’t believe everything that we think. There are many paths that lead to happiness, but over the years, I’ve learned that gratitude is the first step in controlling our responses to life’s events. The key to happiness and balance is gratitude! By focusing on gratitude, we create a space for peace within ourselves. This practice creates an opening that allows more goodness to flow. The best way to begin a gratitude practice is to find 5 things to be grateful for each day. Take quiet time out to reflect. It’s ideal to do this exercise before going to sleep. Being grateful for simple things such as having a roof over your head, food on the table and shoes to wear will bring on an immense sense of satisfaction. Through repetition, you will acquire the ability to be grateful for life’s events that are less than desirable and find some good in them. Try this for 30 days and watch how the quality of your thoughts and feelings improve. There are some useful gratitude practices found in Rhonda Byrne’s The Magic. “W

hy does my child keep getting ear infections?” is perhaps one of the most common questions a pediatric health care provider hears at the beginning of cold and flu season. Middle ear infections – known as otitis media (OM) – are the number-one reason parents bring their children to the doctor and unfortunately, over the last decade, the number of children with earaches has risen sharply. Approximately $8 billion is spent annually on conventional medical treatments for OM including antibiotics, antihistamines and surgical insertion of ear tubes. However, several studies have shown that for most children, drugs and surgery are not only ineffective, but these costly measures may actually predispose children to recurrences of OM. A study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that children who took Amoxicillin for chronic ear infections were two to six times more likely to have a recurrence of their ear infection than those who received a sugar pill. ear or eustachian tube swells; it causes the opening of the eustachian tube to become obstructed, thus preventing the middle ear from draining properly. As inflammation continues the production of fluid increases and exerts pressure on the pain-sensitive structures of the middle ear. The obstruction that occurs may be due to physical or mechanical means. Swollen tonsils or adenoids – which may be caused or aggravated by allergies – are one of the most commonly encountered mechanical types of blockages. Biomechanical obstruction such as abnormal structure or function of the skull, the jaw, and especially the bones of the neck, can contribute to and often cause the development of ear infections. These biomechanical problems often develop due to positioning problems in-utero, due to birth trauma, or following a prolonged or difficult labor and delivery; this may, in turn, result in swelling, muscle spasm, decreased circulation and/or motion, and even misalignment of the spinal bones in the neck relative to one another (called a subluxation). These effects can go undetected for months or years unless your child has a chiropractic check-up. In fact, Gottfried Gutmann, MD, one of Europe’s most prominent researchers in the field of physical medicine, has found that one of the most common consequences of upper neck subluxations is an increased susceptibility to ear, nose and throat infections. These findings are so significant to the overall health of infants and

children that Guttman recommends that examination of the upper part of the neck be mandatory after every difficult birth. In regard to recurrent infections, he states that “the success of adjustment overshadows every other type of treatment, especially the pharmaceutical approach.” After sleepless nights and the pain of recurring ear infections, you may still be trying to get your child off the antibiotic merry-go-round. The following are helpful hints for dealing with ear infections: • Have your child checked for spinal subluxations by a board certified pediatric chiropractor. If subluxations are present, a gentle adjustment – often with only a fingertip – can be performed to correct this condition. • Children suffering from chronic ear infections often have allergies such as dairy, wheat, eggs, chocolate, citrus, corn, soy, peanuts/nuts, shellfish, sugar and yeast. New, non-invasive diagnostic and treatment methods such as the BioSET Allergy Elimination Technique are effective in permanently eliminating allergies without medication or injections. • Breastfeed if at all possible. • Avoid exposing your child to smoke. • Warmed mullein-garlic oil drops in the ear can help ease pain and inflammation. It is also important to increase water consumption. • Vitamin supplementation can be helpful in improving immune function; discuss supplements with your health care provider. • A child who has been on antibiotics has experienced a change in the normal bacterial level of the intestine. It is critical to introduce a probiotic such as Lactobacillus acidophilus or bifidus supplements to restore the normal environment. These approaches are currently being used successfully to care for children suffering from otitis media. It must be remembered that all children are individuals; what works for one child may not work for another. Parents should work together with their child’s pediatric chiropractic physician, pediatrician and other natural health care providers so their collaborative efforts will bring about the most effective and least invasive solution for this common pediatric health problem. PANDAS/PANS What’s the Story? Childen, Parents and Practitioners Rising to the Challenge

ou kiss your child goodnight and she smiles at you before cuddling into her pillow. As she’s been doing for quite some time, she sleeps though the night. But in the morning, a completely different child emerges—one you’ve never before seen or hugged or held. Her personality has been replaced with rage, tics, intrusive thoughts, impulsivity, defiance and separation anxiety. “If your child has an acute onset of tics, OCD, anxiety, aggression, regression or any acute onset of somatic symptoms like sleep problems, urinary changes, infantile behavior or handwriting changes, think about PANDAS/PANS,” explains Nancy O’Hara, MD. PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder associated with streptococcus) is the consequence of an untreated strep infection; it is likened to rheumatic fever of the brain. PANS (pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome) is the result of an assortment of infections including, but not limited to, strep, flu, Coxsackie, Lyme disease and pneumonia. Although the word “pediatric” is in both names, it is surmised that the disease is not merely a childhood one as there have been cases of adult onset. The encephalitictype illness is brought on by an infection, resulting in antibodies that barrage the basal ganglia. Although PANDAS/ PANS is not Tourette’s or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), it can include symptoms of both. Years ago, the acute onset of PANS would have landed children in psychiatric hospitals. Even now, many children with PANS are misdiagnosed as having depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, ODD, urinary tract issues or Tourette’s syndrome. They are placed on psychiatric medications that can 44

obscure and even exacerbate symptoms while the underlying infection remains untreated. A greater number of doctors now know that PANDAS/PANS exist since 2013, when the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology published a consensus statement on PANS diagnostic guidelines. However, too few pediatricians know how to treat it effectively and many insist, without scientific evidence, that PANS is over-diagnosed. “Most of the time, I think it is the parent(s) who figured it out. By the time they do, their child has most likely had multiple psychiatric diagnoses and multiple failed trials of psychiatric meds. If a parent has a feeling in his or her gut that something isn’t right, they are usually correct. More education is needed for pediatricians, who could be instrumental in recognizing this quickly. If they do, parents can avoid years of stress, heartache and frustration, and kids will avoid being misdiagnosed and can go on doing what kids do. The longer you wait for a proper diagnosis, the more this disorder takes away from a normal life - however you define ‘normal’,” says Melissa Machon Giampietro, a parent of a child with PANS. PANS/PANDAS continues to be a clinical diagnosis. Doctors examine blood titers for antibodies to different infections, including strep. An Igenex Western Blot can help determine if Lyme disease is present while other tests can detect additional tick-borne diseases. Dr. Madeline Cunningham has come up with The Cunningham Panel by Moleculara Labs (MoleculeraLabs.com); this test measures antibodies as well as enzymes that regulate neurotransmitters affected by PANS/PANDAS.

Treatment

Treatments include antibiotics (sometimes given long term), steroids (if Lyme is not the underlying infection), plasma infusions (high-dose IVIG) and, very occasionally, plasmapheresis. It can also help to have tonsils removed. “The scariest thing with my son’s PANDAS was his personality change. One IVIG, one tonsillectomy and two years of antibiotics brought my son back,” writes Gunilla Gerland of Sweden. In addition, holistic methods such as homeopathy are being used to treat the PANS symptoms. If Lyme disease is found, treatments are more complicated and there are often accompanying co-infections that can result in additional symptoms. Each child reacts differently to treatments, necessitating a trial and error approach to be taken. “The problem remains; even if we do get a ‘diagnosis’, there still isn’t any real ‘cure’,” says Josette Stone, a parent of a child with PANS. “Each child responds so differently to so many different treatments. It could take years before you find the right treatment for your child.” Once the autoimmune system is damaged, any germs can trigger a PANS flare. “PANS, like most autoimmune diseases, doesn’t play fair; it’s a trickster,” explains Gabriella True, president of the New England PANS/PANDAS Association. “If your child hasn’t been diagnosed with PANS but has already been diagnosed with one or more of the diagnostic criteria and suddenly gets worse and develops a new symptom that falls under the criteria, then keep pushing for more answers because the answer might be PANS. It also tricks you into thinking your child’s triggers will always be the same but one


day your kid is having another flare but there are no signs of the usual suspects. So you have to figure out what the new trigger is and how to treat it.” It can be challenging to locate specialists who treat PANS and PANDAS. Many parents have discovered social media groups to be a source of information and have learned of knowledgeable providers through these closed support groups. Not all providers take insurance. In addition to working with a medical practitioner or holistic healer, parents sometimes engage cognitive behavior therapists once the infection is under control. They also utilize other types of therapies, from occupational therapy to biofeedback, depending upon the lingering symptoms. Oftentimes, parents need to educate different providers about PANS. It is also important to note that cognitive behavior therapy will not help much when the child’s brain is inflamed; the infections need to be brought under control first. The lack of information can be life-threatening. Some children see immediate improvement once given the correct treatment. But if a child continues to have flare-ups, it can be difficult to eradicate the PANS/PANDAS. “For 22 months, my daughter was nearly homebound and having daily panic attacks,” says Amy Infanti. “One 30-day course of the correct antibiotic brought her back 90 percent to baseline. The cure was as dramatic as the onset. We are still holding our breath 15 months later, but feel very blessed to have found the appropriate treatment after struggling so long.”

Education

Many parents have reported that their child seems “normal” all day, only to fall apart when they get home. This is indicative of the control that these children are exerting, rather than a loss of control. Children will use energy to appear normal in public, holding back tics, rages and separation anxiety but, when fatigued, will release their pent-up symptoms in a safe place. PANS/PANDAS does not disappear when the child enters the classroom. If the infections are left untreated, these symptoms will emerge at school. In addition, children with PANS can experience any or all of the following issues that affect academics: handwriting decline, math decline (including forgetting previously learned math facts), attention problems, OCD, sensory issues, tics and memory issues. A child who is working diligently to control tics, urinary incontinence and other symptoms will have a difficult time attending to lessons. It is strongly suggested that parents acquire a 504 Plan through the school so that all teachers are alerted to the fact that this student is ill. A 504 Plan or an IEP can help to level “the playing field” for the child who is struggling with obstacles that other students do not have. Additionally, under a 504 Plan, the school can be instructed to alert parents if there is a strep outbreak or other germs in the classroom, or if new symptoms emerge in school. It is crucial for educators to understand that symptoms are not behavioral but are indicative of a medical illness the child is fighting. The last thing a child with PANS Continued on page 46

Emily Klein, an educator and parent in Rhode Island, argues in favor of instructing school nurses. “Having a school nurse and special education director who are knowledgeable about PANDAS plus teachers who are willing to learn about it has been a tremendous asset to maintaining my son in an inclusive learning environment with special education supports. We are seeing school nurse associations hold conferences to educate themselves on PANDAS and PANS. I hope that sweeps the country. Our school nurse even trained a student teacher who would be in my son’s class. I never would have thought to ask her to do so, and I was most grateful when she let me know,” she says.

Community Understanding

Although PANS/PANDAS is a considered a medical disease, it is an illness that affects the brain, resulting in symptoms that appear psychiatric. Often, extended families, doctors, schools and other groups have no comprehension of the issues that the child and his family face on a daily basis. For this reason, it is extremely helpful to find a support group, whether it is online or in person. It is important for children to also know that they are not alone, that PANS has stricken many intelligent, creative kids who want nothing more than to be normal again. It is also suggested to educate other members of the extended family. Children with PANS frequently lose friendships as well as drop out of activities and sports. New sensory issues can make it overwhelming for the child to simply go to the supermarket. While the parents’ world flips over, so does that of the child. The entire family, healthy siblings included, needs support.

Some children, such as Amy Infanti’s daughter, and Sammy in Beth Maloney’s book, Saving Sammy: The Boy Who Caught OCD, do recover completely. Other children show degrees of recovery, succumbing to symptoms when exposed to germs. Ongoing medical treatment continues to be integral. Research into the immunoneurological system is currently being conducted in different areas of the country. Dr. Susan Swedo, chief of pediatrics and developmental neuroscience at the National Institute of Mental Health and the researcher who identified PANDAS in the 1990s, continues to study the disorder. PANDAS/PANS conferences are occasionally held throughout the United States as well as in Italy. “No one can deny that our children’s health changes right before our eyes. Regardless of the controversies surrounding the infections that may cause PANS/ PANDAS, now is the time to be doing all we can do to treat these kids,” says Wendy Nawara, president of PANDAS/PANS Advocacy and Support. “There is definitely hope for those who are recognized, diagnosed and treated expeditiously.” Lisa Wolk-Kilion is a wife and a mother of two kids. Including children in the farming lifestyle fosters caring for other living things, personal grow and environmental stewardship. The Children’s Program will be used to inspire students of all ages to become food advocates and environmental stewards of their community. Family farms and workers will always be need. These individuals care for the land and understand the value of being the providers of healthy produce that is necessary to feed our future local communities. SAFFFE (Save American Family Farms from Extinction) is a grassroots initiative for people who are passionate about the future of local family farms,” explains Teena Borek of Teena’s Pride CSA. “On our farm we had a monthly open house where we educated local families about the importance of fresh produce for their health. There I saw the need for some type of farm program where we could reach more children, especially inner city school children, who may not have an opportunity to visit a farm on their own. So KIDS 2 FARM 2 TABLE was born. The goal is to build a miniature version of our local farms so we could receive bus loads of school children weekly. This farm program will inspire young people (and children of all ages) to discover good nutrition through thoughtful, direct experiences with seasonal fruits and vegetables, on the farm and in the kitchen.” Lack of fresh food, while eating more processed food, has put children’s health at risk. The Center for Disease

Control (CDC) estimates one out of three children born in the 2000s will develop Type 2 diabetes. Shockingly, this may be first generation to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. “KIDS 2 FARM 2 TABLE, a program designed to include an experiential education model (i.e. doing, reflecting, and applying) will allow our youth to explore the farming experience in their community, whether in an urban or rural setting,” Borek continues. “The farm team will involve participants in gardening and tasting experiences that build knowledge and understanding through a process of inquiry and reflection. It will help them understand the different growing knowledge needed for tropical versus northern production of fresh fruits and vegetables. It will inspire children to discover good nutrition through thoughtful, direct experiences with seasonal fruits and vegetables, on the farm and in the kitchen. The instruction will follow the “rainbow on your plate” philosophy that promotes a diet incorporating a diverse set of colorful whole foods. This approach will help children understand what food is, how it is grown using different farming techniques and, perhaps most important, that they themselves can choose to grow, make and eat good food for their own bodies.” The smaller farm property will include examples of row-crop vegetable production using water conservation and sustainable processes; hydroponic greenhouse demonstrations of growing tomatoes, herbs, kale, greens and other vegetables using natural predators and recycled closed water system; hydroponically grown wheat grass and sprouted edible seeds using no pesticides and organic methods; and many varieties of fruit trees showing local tropical fruit. “With the help of volunteer chefs and fresh food advocates, this program can be part of a growing movement to transform the way nutrition is taught and ensure that our students learn to eat a balanced diet. bookofthemonth WHAT IT MEANS TO “DIE” AND TO “WAKE UP” Dr. Rajiv Parti, MD, and the Lessons of his Near-Death Experience by Paul Perry I have written a dozen books on near-death experiences (NDEs), four of which are New York Times bestsellers. The subject of NDEs is one I’m devoted to, and as a result I am constantly in contact with NDE researchers as well as those who have had the experience. NDEs are extraordinary. The idea of leaving one’s body at the point of death, traveling to a heavenly realm and seeing beloved relatives who have passed is truly a hero’s journey. It is these stories that may eventually answer mankind’s greatest question: What happens when we die? Which brings us to Dr. Rajiv Parti, former chief of anesthesiology at Bakersfield Heart Hospital. His is most likely the best NDE I have ever heard, not just for the experience itself, but for the transformation it led to. In 2008 Rajiv Parti, MD, was Chief of Anesthesiology at Bakersfield Heart Hospital in California. He derived his identity and happiness from the incredible wealth and prestige his job gave him. He lived in a mansion, had several luxury cars, and was able to purchase most any material goods he wanted. For some reason this made him feel invincible. In August of that year - everything changed. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer. A routine surgery eradicated the cancer, but led to complications that left him incontinent and in excruciating pain. He was prescribed pain meds that he soon became addicted to, and within time was diagnosed with depression, too. On December 14, 2010, he went to UCLA Medical Center for the surgical placement of an artificial urinary sphincter. In the days after this surgery he began running a fever of 104-105. Heavy antibiotics were prescribed, but he was not getting better. On Christmas Eve 2010, Dr. Parti underwent emergency surgery to drain the pelvic region of infection and remove the artificial sphincter. It was here, dying and heavily anesthetized, that he “woke up.” Although deeply asleep from anesthesia, he was very aware that his consciousness had separated from his body. From a vantage point near the ceiling he could see the surgeon cut him and then all of the operating room personnel react as the odor of the pus from his infected abdomen seeped throughout the room. He saw a nurse apply eucalyptus-scented water to everyone’s surgical masks. 48

He even heard the anesthesiologist tell a joke so dirty that he blushed when he later told it to the anesthesiologist in the recovery room. Dr. Parti then left the operating room and began to drift toward familiar voices in India, where he could hear his mother and sister talking about dinner preparations, deciding on rice, vegetables, yogurt and legumes. He could see they were bundled up to protect from the foggy, frigid air that night. A small electric heater glowed, helping to take the chill out of the room. Dr. Parti became euphoric. People are never far away, he thought. He had the sense of his presence spreading around the world, a feeling of oneness with the world and everyone in it. Then fear overcame him when his awareness drifted to a place where a great, wild, fire was raging. He could see lightning in dark clouds and smell the odor of burning meat. He realized that an unseen force was pulling him into Hell, leaving him “in the midst of souls who were screaming and suffering.” What is my Karma, he wondered. What did I do in my life or past life to deserve this punishment? In the middle of this horror, Dr. Parti began to have the strong awareness that the life he was living was very materialistic: His life was always about him. So much so, in fact, that when he met new people Dr. Parti asked himself, “What can I get from this person?” The truth dawned on him there in Hell: the life he was living on earth was without love. He was not practicing compassion or forgiveness towards himself or others. He also had an unsavory tendency to be harsh towards people he perceived to be lower than him in status. He felt deeply sorry for his lack of kindness, wishing he could have done certain things in his life differently. As soon as he had that realization, Hell faded away. Transcendence and transformation are what interest me most in near-death experiences. In my research, I rarely meet a person who hasn’t been transformed by their NDE. These people become kinder, gentler versions of the person they were before their NDE. Sometimes this change is so complete, they are no longer recognizable. That was the case with Dr. Parti. His brush with death opened an entirely new world to him – an otherworld if you will – that replaced the materialistic world he had so carefully constructed. ue to advances in veterinary care, many pets are living longer with an overall better quality of life and now even handicapped pets are beginning to reap the benefits of such advances. The word handicapped indicates a condition that restricts the ability of a pet to function physically. Handicaps can include mobility issues such as blindness, neurological or spinal disorders, or loss of limb. In addition, it may involve temporary circumstances, such as surgeries, illness and injuries. Being handicapped does not preclude the necessity of exercise for these pets. “Regular exercise is imperative for handicapped or injured pets. Dogs with chronic arthritis or ligament injuries will benefit from routine exercise. The movement maintains proper muscle tone, as well as strengthening the tissue surrounding the problem areas. Without appropriate physical conditioning, these pets may see a significant decrease in quality of life due to increased pain and discomfort.” ~ Andrew Pickerstein, DVM As pet parents, it is necessary to recognize our own expectations and not let our biases unknowingly negatively impact our animals’ quality of life. All pets should get exercise, especially those with disabilities or movement restrictions. Exercise improves strength, reduces stress that causes behavior challenges and provides healing energy.

“Handicapped dogs are so resilient, they usually figure out how to work around their impediment and live a full and active life. Yet providing proper exercise and food portions to keep their weight in check is so critical, and even more so for handicapped pets than normal pets,” says Steve Pelletier, founder of SlimDoggy.com and a former pet parent to a blind rescue dog. “A fat dog has a harder time getting around and their lives are generally harder than a fit and trim pet. Why would an owner of a handicapped dog add another unnecessary level of difficulty to their dog’s life?” The most important consideration in exercising a handicapped pet is choosing the right type of exercise for the situation. Seek guidance from a professional to develop a therapeutic program that is designed to work with a pet’s limitations. They can demonstrate how to do the right exercises and help provide equipment recommendations to fit the pet’s needs. Any exercise is good, whether it is walking, hiking, swimming, playing, running or even using exercise equipment. There are companies that make treadmills, agility equipment, exercise vests for therapeutic resistance training, and gym gear for strength, endurance and balance for pets. Let’s not forget mental exercise. Mental exercise includes hiding treats around the home or buying toys where the pet has to figure out how to get the treat out. Before beginning a new exercise program with handicapped pets, it is best to discuss it with a veterinarian first because there may be circumstances than require special attention. These can include breathing issues that short-nosed dogs may have during exercise or inflamed arthritic joints, as well as heart and respiratory issues, which may limit the duration of exercise. In general, resistance exercises are great for developing strength and can be performed at various degrees of difficulty. For dogs with hearing or sight challenges, cardiovascular exercise can still be performed but different cues and equipment can be used. Flexibility exercises are great for handicapped pets that have limited range of motion and can be performed daily to increase blood flow and circulation, says Krista Wickens, president of FitPAWS/FitBALL/Ball Dynamics (FitPAWSUSA.com). natural awakenings

Herbal Medicine - Treating People, Not Diseases by David Winston, RH (AHG)

F

rom the 1930s through the 1970s the United States experienced what I call the “Herbal Dark Ages”. This is a time when the use of herbal medicine virtually vanished from mainstream American culture and the wisdom of our ancestors was nearly lost. Only in a small number of rural and ethnic communities was this knowledge maintained and applied. In the late 1960s and early 1970s a revival of interest in natural foods, organic gardening and alternative healthcare helped usher in a renewed enthusiasm for herbal medicine. This has grown exponentially over the past 40 years and the herb/nutritional supplements industry has boomed. In some ways this is good, I no longer get calls asking “What is this herb ek-in-ec-ee-a?” (referring to echincaea). But in other ways we still have a long way to go. While certain medicinal plants have become popular – St. John’s wort, turmeric, saw palmetto, black cohosh, and maca, among others - herbal medicine has not. Most Americans believe that herbal medicine means taking St. John’s wort instead of Prozac. This is not herbal medicine; it is the allopathic use of herbs. The idea that an herb is good for a disease is patently untrue. How many of us have been told that black cohosh is “the menopause herb,” or that saw 50

palmetto is “the prostate herb,” or that St John’s wort is “the depression herb.” While this is great for marketing purposes, it is not accurate and in many cases will lead people to conclude that herbs don’t work. The fact is that great herbalists do not treat disease; we treat people. More than 2000 years ago Hippocrates is believed to have said “it is more important to know the person who has the disease, than to know the disease the person has.” He was correct. The focus of herbal treatment is to use herbs, diet, lifestyle changes, exercise, and other means to enhance our body’s innate ability to heal itself. There are no herbal antibiotics, but there are herbs that enhance our immune function and can inhibit viral or bacterial replication and virulence. It is not either/or; it should be both/and, answered by asking “which practices can be most helpful for me or my family at this time and for this issue?” Where Western medical practice is strong, herbal medicine tends to be much less effective and, conversely, where herbal practice is most effective is where orthodox medicine tends to have little to offer. If you have Lyme disease or bacterial meningitis you need antibiotics. If you need surgery or asthma medication, that is
