publisher’sletter June is For Our Guys
M
y father passed away over 10 years ago, but I’m blessed to have a stepdad that has been like a father to me for as long as I can remember. In his retirement he’s taken up growing fruit trees, bananas and papayas so far, and is trying his hand at others. I can actually say to anyone, I enjoy the “fruit of his labor,” and literally mean it. But in all seriousness, I truly believe this new leisure pursuit has given him a new sense of purpose after the inevitable new chapter of leaving work. Like most men, every one of us looks forward to retirement. However, without our health we can’t hope to enjoy it as much as my stepdad has with his fruit trees. In this, our yearly June issue, which focuses on men’s health, we’ve gathered many local and national experts to help our guys stay or become healthier, so when they reach the age of retirement they can enjoy their favorite hobby or pastime. After all, retirements represent a new period in their lives, a period of change that should be faced with their ‘best “health” forward.’ Clearly in our minds we understand that saving for retirement is the best approached to this lifelong expected chapter. But without health there’s truly no hope for this new period to be successful and pain free, literally. Accordingly, understanding that the lifestyle choices you make now will determine the type of life or retirement you’ll enjoy must also be a priority. From nutrition to whether you are sedentary or not, all aspects of living must be consider as you forge the kind of future you want to enjoy. Men, young and old, fit or not, have discovered the benefits of yoga. Now even bodybuilders (fitbody pg. 28) are realizing the benefits when combining the “grace, elegance and body awareness” of yoga with their bodybuilding workouts. And if you find that you don’t have enough energy to tackle daily living, Warren Kramer, an international recognized macrobiotic counselor explains why eating more vegetables is the answer (pg. 40). But let’s not forget our dads. Whether you are home, deployed or an expecting father, we have something for you as well. From helping you improve relationships with your children (pg. 36), understanding what happens when you are deployed and returning home (pg. 37), to supporting you through becoming a father (pg. 21), we have many helpful tips for you within this month’s edition. The point is that we are always listening to your needs, and we have worked hard to bring you the latest information and research that will keep you in track and Happy (pg. 22). These and other informative and educational pieces in this issue will guide you to a healthier tomorrow, even if growing fruit is not your thing. Happy Fathers Day to all our dads! Present and future!

newsbriefs Holistic Chamber of Commerce Celebrates Men’s Health Month
M
en’s Health Month is celebrated in June across the country with health fairs, screenings, media appearances, and other health education and outreach activities. Supported by a Congressional health education program, this dedicated month gives health care providers, public policy makers and other interested parties the opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury. In honor of this national men’s health education program, the Greater Miami Holistic Chamber of Commerce will host “The Men’s Panel for Men’s Health Month” on June 29, 2016. The discussion will center around holistic and alternative medicine practices that can help in early detection as well as preventative care for the mind, body and spirit. The all-male panel will consist of a range of experts including Hamad Shirazi with Southern Holistic Alchemy, Alexander Rivas from Body and Brain Yoga and Dr. Jared Rose with Chiropractic & Holistic Healing Center. Support for Military Fathers
S
oldiers and their families spend months thinking about returning home and reuniting. About that first hug or kiss. Then reality hits. Because while deployed they must be on constant alert for danger, reintegration can be a daunting experience. Helping current or former military fathers reintegrate into civilian and family life is the National Fatherhood Initiative® (NFI). Their mission is “to transform local organizations and communities by equipping them to intentionally and proactively engage fathers in their families and children’s lives.” As stated on their website, they are the “leading provider of father-specific resources for each of the nation’s military branches.” And it goes on to say, that they “ help military leaders and family support personnel build the protective factors that create the resilience in military families that is vital to life in the military, including successful deployment and reintegration. Your approach to working with military dads can include easy-to-distribute resources for use during home visits to resources for more intensive, group-based parenting and fathering training.” NFI help manage anger, depression, stress, child abuse or domestic violence and encourage faith supported home visitations through programs like Community Services, Family Advocacy, New Parent Support, Youth and Child Development and Services, Outreach and Family Advocacy, Life skill programs and so many more. The goal is that our soldiers and their families understand they are no longer alone. For more specific information and resources visit www.fatherhood.org/fatherhood-program-military 10

Natural Childbirth
N
atural Childbirth gained popularity the early 60’s after Marjorie Karmel wrote about her experiences in her 1959 book Thank You, Dr. Lamaze. It is considered by many women as an empowering experience. Instead of medical interventions the mother chooses midwifery and a variety of non-invasive methods, such as hydrotherapy, massage, relaxation therapy, hypnosis, breathing exercises, acupressure and others to ease pain and support the birth process. Holistic South Pregnancy & Birth Center (HSPBC), set in a beautiful space, offers an out of hospital natural birth using water for labor support and birth. “Under the direction of a Board Certified OB/GYN HSPBC, we are the first and only birth center located directly across the street from a hospital,” Debra Geymayr, Doula & Directress of Prenatal Plus Yoga, Inc. “We offer complete holistic midwifery care with prenatal, labor and birth support together with postpartum care including women’s wellness. Our exclusive “Gravity Birth™” is also an option with no unnecessary intervention, lots of patience, compassion and love! Additionally, we provide extensive resources including massage, acupuncture, chiropractic care, and breastfeeding support right from the start.” To register for prenatal yoga, lactation and parenting workshops, or to book a private session to learn how to mentally and physically prepare for childbirth, call 305-238-7873. Insurance is accepted. HSPBC is located at 9275 S.W. 152 Street, 1st Floor, in Miami. www.hspbirthcenter.com. See ad, page 62.

o one knows for sure how many kinds of staghorn corals there are, but scientists estimate there may be nearly 400 species. Unfortunately due to climate change, human activities and disease, 33 percent of coral species are already listed as threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. According to the IUCN, Staghorn corals, the collective name for some 160 species representing approximately one-fifth of earth’s extant reef-building corals, are critical to the processes of reef-building and provision of habitat for the remarkable array of associated reef life globally. As well as being the most biodiverse ecosystems in the marine realm, coral reefs provide protein, livelihoods and services to tens of millions of people worldwide. But you can make a difference. On June 3rd and 4th, the Second Annual Coral Plantapalooza, hosted by The Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF), honors World Oceans Day. CRF staff, interns, volunteers, and board members will work to plant more than 1,600 reef-building Staghorn Corals on reefs along the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Any recreational diver who is open water certified and ready to learn about CRF is welcomed. Dive groups are to range between Islamorada and Key Largo. An introductory workshop is to be held Friday June 3rd in the afternoon, and dives are on Saturday, June 4th.
Free to participate, but donations to Coral Restoration Foundation are encouraged and welcomed. Visit www.coralrestoration.org, call 305-453-7030 or email ashley@ coralrestoration.org for complete details. Coral Restoration Foundation is a non-profit ocean conservation organization working to restore coral reefs, etc.

E-Cigarettes Produce Free Radicals
E
lectronic cigarette use, or vaping, is on the rise as many consider it a healthier alternative to smoking. However, in a study published in the American Chemical Society journal Chemical Research in Toxicology, researchers from the Penn State University College of Medicine report that e-cigarettes produce considerable levels of reactive free radicals created by the hightemperature heating coils that warm up the nicotine solution. Dr. John Richie, a professor at Penn State and senior author of the research, says, “The identification of these radicals in the aerosols means that we can’t just say e-cigarettes are safe because they don’t contain tobacco. They are potentially harmful.” The researchers found that levels of free radicals in e-cigarettes are between 100 to 1,000 times less than the levels produced by tobacco cigarettes, still making them a better choice than traditional cigarettes although they still carry risk. Richie explains, “The levels of radicals that we’re seeing are more than what you might get from a heavily air-polluted area, but less than what you might find in cigarette smoke.” Previous research has found that e-cigarette smoke also contains aldehydes that can potentially cause cellular and tissue damage.
esearch from the University of Texas Medical School and Health Science Center has found that a medicinal mushroom extract may be able to eradicate human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted disease. Presented last fall at the 11th International Conference of the Society for Integrative Oncology, in Houston, the clinical study treated 10 women that tested positive for HPV with the mushroom mycelia extract called active hexose correlated compound (AHCC). The patients were given three grams of the AHCC once a day for six months or longer. Eight of them tested negative for HPV after the period, including three that were confirmed HPV-eradicated after stopping the AHCC treatment. The two other patients continued receiving the extract. A phase II clinical trial led by Dr. Judith Smith, a professor at the UT Medical School, will be conducted.
Awe and Wonder Prime Physical Health
T
wo related studies from the University of California, Berkeley, suggest that the act of admiring the beauty of nature with awe and wonder can decrease inflammation in the body. More than 200 adults reported their experiences of emotions on a particular day, including amusement, awe, compassion, joy, contentment and pride. Samples of the subjects’ gum and cheek tissues were analyzed for cytokines, and the researchers found those that cited emotions of awe, wonder and amazement had the lowest levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6). UC Berkeley professor and co-author of the research Dacher Keltner, Ph.D., says, “That awe, wonder and beauty promote healthier levels of cytokines suggests that the things we do to experience these emotions—a walk in nature, losing oneself in music, beholding art—have a direct influence upon health and life expectancy.”

New Healthy Building Standard The WELL Building Standard, administered by the International WELL Building Institute, is the world’s first development criterion to focus exclusively on human health and wellness. It marries best practices in design and construction with evidence-based medical and scientific research, harnessing the built environment as a vehicle to support human health and well-being. Pioneered by the Delos company and the culmination of seven years of research in partnership with leading scientists, doctors, architects and wellness thought leaders, WELL is grounded in a body of medical research that explores the connection between the buildings where people spend more than 90 percent of their time and the health and wellness impacts on occupants. It sets performance requirements in seven categories: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and state of mind. WELL-certified spaces can help foster improvements in the nutrition, fitness, moods, sleep patterns and performance of occupants. WELL is independently certified by Green Business Certification Inc., which administers the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program and associated professional credentialing program. More U.S. Cities Leaving the Grid Nassau, New York, a town of 5,000 outside Albany, plans to ramp up a combination of rooftop- and ground-mounted solar, wind turbine and landfill methane-capture technologies to generate 100 percent of its power from renewable sources by 2020. “If all goes as planned, within the next four years, all six of the town buildings will be disconnected from the grid,” says Nassau Supervisor Dave Fleming. The New York Department of Public Services wants this trend to grow through its Reforming Energy Vision (REV) initiative. Governor Andrew Cuomo’s administration is actively working to help municipalities, especially core towns and schools, move toward getting a significant portion of their power from renewable resources. Smaller, cleaner, power systems are less costly and cleaner alternatives to the traditional larger electrical stations. San Diego, California, recently committed to securing 100 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2035. It’s the largest American city to do so. Already, at least 13 U.S. cities, including San Francisco; Burlington, Vermont; and Aspen, Colorado, have committed to 100 percent clean energy. Las Vegas is among other major cities aiming to follow suit. Hawaii has pledged the same by 2045, the most ambitious standard set by a U.S. state to date. Source: EcoWatch.com 16

Bye-Bye Dye
Mars and Others Abandoning Artificial Colors Mars Inc., the maker of many candies, chewing gum flavors and other food products, is phasing out artificial food dyes over the next five years. The decision came as a response to growing customer demand, says CEO Grant F. Reid. Nestlé, General Mills, Kraft and Kellogg’s have also started eliminating artificial dyes from their products due to calls for more natural ingredients. Common shades of red 40 and yellow 5 are presently ubiquitous, as per capita production of artificial coloring approved for use in food has increased more than five-fold since the 1950s. According to a study of supermarket labels by the Center for Science in Public Interest, an estimated 90 percent of child-oriented candies, fruit snacks, drink mixes and powders contain artificial colors, and many parents are concerned about their potential impact on developing brains. Several studies have scrutinized dyes’ possible link to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other effects on children’s behavior. When a study by a group of British scientists suggested a link between the consumption of certain food dyes and hyperactivity in kids, Europe and the UK began requiring food with artificial dyes to carry warning labels. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration continues to maintain that no causal relationship exists between color additives and hyperactivity in children, and doesn’t require warning labels.

More Retailers Ban Bee-Toxic Products Amidst the growing pollinator crisis and due to public pressure, Aldi Süd, the German supermarket chain with stores in the U.S., has become the first major European retailer to ban pesticides toxic to bees, including the neonicotinoids imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiamethoxam, from fruits and vegetables produced for their stores. Starting in January, Aldi produce suppliers have had to ensure their cultivation practices exclude eight pesticides identified as toxic to bees. Other retailers in the U.S. and Europe are also beginning to shun bee-toxic pesticides. Home Depot will no longer use the class of pesticides known as neonics on 80 percent of its flowering plants; completing the phase-out in 2018. Lowe’s is ending the sale of products containing neonicotinoid pesticides within 48 months. Smaller retailers are also working on removing neonics and other toxic pesticides from their shelves. The science has become increasingly clear that pesticides, working individually or synergistically, play a critical role in the ongoing decline of honeybees and other pollinators. Bees in the U.S. and Europe have seen unprecedented losses over the last decade, and bee-toxic pesticides like neonicotinoids have consistently been implicated as a major contributing factor. globalbriefs Unsafe Playfields
Artificial Surfaces Pose Risks As of January, there have been 200 nationwide cases of cancers in young athletes that played on synthetic turf— many of them lymphoma, which is uncommon in the age group. In 2013, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency withdrew earlier safety assurances and called for new, more comprehensive studies. A majority of professional and college athletes strongly prefer natural turf because those playing on synthetic turf suffer about 50 percent more knee and ankle injuries. Other playfields use “crumb rubber” infill made of ground-up used tires formerly considered hazardous waste. Thus, sports players may be exposed to dozens of chemical compounds, most of which have never been tested for health impact; some of those tested are believed to cause cancer, birth defects, developmental and reproductive disorders and infertility. Many Americans work 50 hours a week or more because they think they’ll get more done and reap the benefits later. However, according to a metastudy published in The Lancet, people that clock a 55-hour week have a 33 percent greater risk of stroke and 13 percent higher risk of developing coronary heart disease than those that maintain a 35- to 40-hour work week. Data from 25 studies that monitored the health of 600,000 people from the U.S., Europe and Australia for up to 8.5 years were analyzed. Paul Kelley, of Oxford University’s Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute, notes that even a traditional nine-to-five workday is at odds with peoples’ internal body clocks, contributing to sleep deprivation. Now Sweden is moving toward a standard six-hour workday, with some businesses having already implemented the change. Linus Feldt, CEO of Stockholm app developer Filimundus, reports that the shift has maintained productivity while decreasing staff conflicts, because people are happier and better rested. Several Toyota service centers in Gothenburg that switched to a six-hour day 13 years ago also report happier staff, a lower turnover rate and increased ease in enticing new hires. A Swedish retirement home has embarked on a yearlong experiment to compare the costs and benefits of a shorter working day. Source: ScienceAlert.com

Safely Keep Winged Visitors Away from Outdoor Events Warding off summertime mosquitoes and flies to maintain outdoor fun is especially important given the new disease potential of the mosquito-borne Zika and West Nile viruses. Here are some naturally protective measures. Remove stale, standing water outside the home—including swimming pool covers, clogged rain gutters and buckets—and turn over clay pots and plastic containers, as they all can be prime mosquito-breeding spots, suggests the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Alternatively, a toxin-free backyard pond or water garden can be stocked with mosquito fish like gambusia that feed on and consume large quantities of insect larvae. Avoid applying potent perfumes, soaps and lotions prior to an outdoor event, because such scents attract insects. It always helps to wear light, long-sleeve shirts and pants to protect more skin. Grow plants with odors mosquitoes don’t like. EarthEasy.com suggests citronella, horsemint (aka bee balm), marigolds, ageratum (floss flowers) and catnip. WellnessMama.com also likes lavender, thyme, lemongrass, anything in the mint family and even basil; rub fresh or dried leaves on the skin or apply lavender flowers or oil, especially on hot spots (neck, underarms or behind ears). Use a non-toxic, plastic-free insect-repelling band for kids. Avoid conventional insect repellents, as many contain diethyltoluamide (DEET), one of the top five contaminants of U.S. waterways. Chemicals rinse off into shower and bath drains during later wash-ups.

Fathers Go Through Pregnancy Too by Holly Zwerling, LMFT, LCSW
P
regnancy is an emotional, stressful journey that is also experienced by men but affects them differently than women. Preparing to become a father requires a different way of looking at yourself; your life is now responsible for another life. The value you place on being healthy will also affect the health of your newborn. Whether you are a birth father, a step father, an adoptive father, or a foster father, when you consider your health needs you are valuing the life of a child and the importance of your role in his or her life. Unlike an expectant mother, obstetricians do not monitor the health of an expectant father, so often proper health habits and health problems are not addressed. Consider how fathers deal with stress, for example. Do they talk about it, work it out, suppress it, react to it angrily, become passive-aggressive towards family members or abusive, turn to addictive behavior, stay out late or avoid meaningful contact with family members? Extreme stresses can affect physical health and have a bearing on sleep, concentration and decision-making. This was highlighted in the movie, “American Sniper,” when the obstetrician examining a mother and observed that the expectant father seemed stressed, then suggested he schedule a medical evaluation as she was concerned about his health. As it was, he was experiencing tremendous stress being deployed to Iraq five times. Young men traditionally don’t seek out preventive care in preparation of becoming fathers and yet, from a child’s perspective, he or she would want the opportunity to be raised by healthy parents who will contribute to his or hers healthy arrival and upbringing. Therefore, health practitioners should ideally address expecting fathers’ family history, addictions, mental status, including depression and relationship health, as well as providing them information about birth and childcare. As reported by the September 2011 issue of the Harvard Mental Health Letter, 10% of fathers have post-partum depression, which needs to be recognized and addressed in order to keep fathers involved responsibly with their children. Paternal health and education is needed to assure that children have parents prepared in all ways for their arrival. Health practitioners should work together to emphasize the value of fathers and recognize pregnancy is not a one-person show. A “We’re Pregnant” status which is inclusive of fathers’ health and well-being will lead to an increase in responsible involvement in children’s lives. Thus more children and fathers will reap the benefits of celebrating many Fathers Days together. Fathers, as are mothers, are strong role models for their children, encouraging them to be healthy and live healthy life.

HAPPY ALL DAY Simple Daily Practices for a Happier Life by Judith Fertig
T
hroughout the past decade, success researchers and positive psychologists have sketched out in broad strokes the big picture of our elemental yearning for happiness. According to Martin Seligman, Ph.D., and his colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, inner happiness derives from four basic elements: positive emotion, relationships, meaning in life and accomplishment. What we want to know now is how to instill happiness into daily practices. In her latest book, Better Than Before: Mastering The Habits Of Our Everyday Lives, happiness expert Gretchen Rubin fleshes out the needed details. She maintains that the shift into a happier way of being can be as simple as changing our habits, which she terms the invisible architecture of daily life. Rubin found, “We repeat about 40 percent of our behavior almost daily, so our habits shape our existence and our future. If we change our habits, we change our lives.” We can start small in sometimes surprising ways that encourage personal, family, workplace and community well-being.
Simplify—Exercise—Meditate Israeli-born Tal Ben-Shahar, Ph.D., a former Harvard lecturer and author
22

of the bestselling Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment, had 854 students enroll in one of his pioneering classes on happiness in 2006, the highest enrollment for any class at the time. “Students explored ways to apply these ideas to their life experiences and communities,” he says. Today, he lectures and consults worldwide on the science of happiness, or “optimal being and functioning”. Ben-Shahar suggests we cultivate three personal habits. The first one is to simplify, saying, “We need to turn off our phones, email and other distractions at home, so we can fully be with the people we care about and that care about us. Time affluence— time to enjoy and appreciate—is a predictor of happiness.” The second is to exercise. “We were not meant to be sedentary,” he says. The third is to meditate. “Meditating helps us to develop extreme resilience to negative emotion.” Ken A.Verni, Psy.D., a clinical psychologist in Highland Park, New Jersey, endorses the importance of a mindfulness habit. In his new book, Happiness the Mindful Way: A Practical Guide, Verni outlines easy, step-bystep actions to form a new happiness habit that concurrently reduces stress and increases enlightenment. He starts

with what he calls “compassionate attention”; being fully awake or present in our lives without judging what we’re thinking. When we view our thoughts as events in the mind, he says, conscious self-observation introduces a space between our perceptions and responses, allowing us to view our thoughts as separate from the person we really are. Complementary methods may include breathing techniques or body awareness that help shift us away from anxious, “What if?” speculations into the ever-present now. With just a few minutes of mindfulness a day—the first thing in the morning or at night before retiring—according to Verni, “We can shift our relationship to ourselves and our life experiences in a way that allows for greater spaciousness, acceptance and compassion, and in doing so, can dramatically improve the quality of our lives.”
Daily Joy at Home Another way to improve the quality of our life is to reverse one habit. Shonda Rhimes, creator of TV dramas that include Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, admits that she’s a driven, Type-A person in her new book, Year of Yes. A busy career in Los Angeles, three children and little leisure left her feeling unhappy, so instead of reciting her habitual, “No” to anything extraneous—like parties, eating chocolate chip cookies or spending a lazy afternoon chatting with an old friend—she decided to change that habit to, “Yes.” One of Rhimes’ most profound revelations occurred after she responded positively when her children asked her to play. She observes that kids don’t want that much from us and playtime rarely involves more than 15 minutes; when we give them access and attention, it makes everyone feel good. Rubin agrees that it’s the little things that can contribute to family happiness. As a New York City mother of two, she decided that she’d be happier if she knew she was creating family memories. She started regularly preparing “special occasion” family breakfasts, a relatively easy meal to customize. She says, “Studies show that family traditions support children’s

I know that I enjoy a holiday more when I know exactly what we’re going to do and when we’re going to do it.” Home for Matthieu Ricard, a biochemist turned Buddhist monk, could be a Nepalese monastery or a seat at scientific conferences around the world. As the author of Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life’s Most Important Skill, he defines happiness as a deep sense of flourishing that arises from an exceptionally healthy mind. “It’s not a mere pleasurable feeling, a fleeting emotion or a mood, but an optimal state of being,” he says. In order to nurture it, Ricard recommends taking some time each day for quiet reflection, noting, “The contemplative approach consists of rising above the whirlpool of our
thoughts for a moment and looking calmly within, as if at an interior landscape, to find the embodiment of our deepest aspirations.” By cultivating attention and mindfulness, the cares of everyday life become less burdensome. Such a spiritual practice of just sitting quietly for 10 minutes a day, observing the thoughts that randomly cross our minds, and then gently shooing them away, can be enormously beneficial, he says, as it helps us put things in perspective and aim for continuous calm.
recommends we start by doing deep breathing—four seconds breathing in, hold for seven seconds, eight seconds breathing out—repeated four times. Next, we ask ourselves how we feel in the moment and identify the emotion, and then ask what thoughts we can think to feel better. The last step of the exercise is to frame a positive outlook in an affirmation, such as, “I am so grateful that I know I am doing the best I can and everything will work out. Everything is fine.” Ziemer adds, “Remember that happiness comes from love and takes you to a place of peace and calm. It is such emotions that beget success in relationships, health, supply, and clear purpose. Plus, it benefits everyone around you.”
Flipping the Switch
Happiness Habits at Work
Changing thought habits to focus on the good things in life is an approach that works for clients of Mary Lynn Ziemer, a life coach in Estero, Florida. Ziemer suggests we “flip the switch” from negative thinking and make a habit of starting our day being positive and grateful for 10 minutes. She

incredible advantage in our lives,” says Achor. “When the human brain is positive, our intelligence rises and we stop diverting resources to think about anxiety.” The Harvard Business Review published his research results: “Creativity triples and productive energy rises by 31 percent. Sales rise by 37 percent and the likelihood of promotion rises by 40 percent.” Achor’s method is helping people rewrite the way they think by first looking for positives at work. Workers write down three highly specific, positive things about their workday for 21 consecutive days. Rather than just, “I love my job,” acknowledge, “I love my job because I get to help people every day.” Or, “I love my morning tea because it gets me going.” Achor reports that at the end of the period, “Their brain starts to retain a pattern of scanning the world not for the negative, but for the positive first.” Taking a work break for two minutes of mindfulness is also effective. “We did this at Google,” he says. “We had employees take their hands off their keyboards for two minutes a day to go from multitasking to simply focusing on their breathing.

HAPPIER IN JUST MINUTES n Journaling for two minutes about one positive experience we’ve had over the past 24 hours allows our brain to relive it. n Exercising, including 15 minutes of cardiovascular action a day, teaches our brain that our behavior matters and improves our mood. n Meditating for even a few minutes at a time relieves an overloaded brain and allows it to focus on one thing at a time. n Writing one quick email in the morning praising or thanking someone we work with or just to make them happy will make us feel a sense of social support, a great predictor of happiness. appy people don’t find happiness like you’d find a penny on the ground; they make it happen, with action. Cultivating happiness habits can make a marked difference in your life. 4 Be deliberately optimistic. Optimism is imperative to emotional wellness. 4 Prioritize mindfully. Consistently align choices, intentions and actions with the top priorities of love, happiness and health. 4 Keep uplifting resources on hand. A few surefire mood-lifters may include a green smoothie, mani-pedi and solo dance party to at least one get-your-feetmoving song by a favorite artist. 4 Put yourself first. It’s the best way to bring your A game to everyone else. 4 Be a prolific seeker. Seek beauty, joy, adventure, pleasure, growth and
powerful meaning in all areas of life. Let life move you to possibility, opportunity and gratitude. 4 Don’t make things personal. Absolutely nothing others say or do is about you, ever. 4 Examine the worst that can happen. Many of the limitations you’re placing on yourself aren’t real—they’re illusions.
4 Practice loving-kindness. Making this a habit changes the vibration of your life and the lives of those around you. Plus it feels great. 4 Be aware of your energy. Tune in to surrounding energy, as well as the energy you’re emitting and notice what needs to be adjusted or abandoned. 4 Be wary of media consumption. Limit messages in everything from email and news to books and music that take you away from the calm, open space within that revels in joy and wonder. Conversations count, too. Hair Growth Support
Essential Oils are excellent for cleansing, nourishing and strengthening the hair follicles and hair shaft. There are several oils recommended for hair regrowth. Cedarwood is one of the most popular and successful to help support male hair growth. - Cedarwood: Helps regenerate follicles - Rosemary: Useful for clogged pores - Lavender: Antiseptic, improves growth - Clary Sage: Stimulates the scalp Application: Apply 2-3 drops of desired oil in your palms, then rub hands over and around your scalp twice a day. Alternate between the different oils for best results.
Male Hormone Support
As men age their DHEA and testosterone levels decline. Levels of dihydrotesteroone (DHT) increase, contributing to prostate enlargement and hair loss. Essential oils can help support such levels. https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gif
Recommended Essential Oils: Rosemary, Sage, Fennel and Frankincense. Application and Usage: Apply 2-3 drops of Essential Oil in your hands and rub together, cup your hands over your nose and inhale throughout the day. Apply 2-3 drops to the bottoms of your feet before bedtime. Diffuse into the air for 1/2 hour every 4-6 hours daily. Therapeutic grade Essential Oils are great for the health and wellness of the entire family. TRESS STRESS
Natural Ways to Prevent Hair Loss by Jody McCutcheon
A
ncient Egyptians sought to stem hair loss and stimulate hair growth with a cocktail of iron oxide, red lead, onions, alabaster, animal fats and honey. Today, we’re still deploying creative approaches. Men’s hair loss, specifically, is a billion-dollar industry, touting solutions ranging from chemically laced topical treatments and drugs to transplants and wigs. Yet hairloss science is imperfect; it’s riddled with misinformation that allows companies to sell products of varying efficacy. The average head holds about 120,000 to 150,000 strands of hair, and it’s normal for both men and women to lose 50 to 100 strands daily. We lose hair for several reasons. Chiefly, aging weakens hair and makes it more brittle; it also decreases hormone production, slowing hair growth. According to a study published in the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine, anything that interrupts the normal hair cycle can trigger diffuse hair loss. Triggers include physiologic trauma and emotional stresses, nutritional deficiencies, endocrine imbalances and illness, as well as genetics, including pattern baldness. Even air and water pollutants and sunlight’s phototoxic aging effects
www.namiami.com
may facilitate alopecia (sudden hair loss). While it’s impossible to completely stop natural hair loss catalyzed by aging and genes, the rate can be controlled and abnormal loss may be reversed while stimulating growth. Dietary Changes. The typical North American fat-, protein- and salt-rich diet fosters an acidic environment in the body which can lead to premature hair loss. Iron-rich foods like lean red meats and dark green veggies contribute to ferritin levels sufficient to increase the hair’s growth cycle. Iron also delivers oxygen to hair follicles, further inciting growth. In a review of related research, the journal Clinical and Experimental Dermatology reports that double-blind data confirmed the findings of a study in women with increased hair shedding in which a significant proportion responded to llysine and iron therapy. Because hair is made mostly of protein, and protein deficiency is thought to cause hair loss, it would seem that consuming more protein would stimulate growth, although moderation is the key. Too much protein may result in baldness, according to Dr.
Michael Eades, who owns ProteinPower. com. The American Heart Association recommends against high-protein diets because most Americans already eat more protein than they need. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, shellfish, nuts and seeds and their oils can facilitate the production and action of hormones and oily lubricants that effect a healthy scalp and follicles and bouncy, shiny hair. A-complex and B-complex vitamins also are said to promote vibrant, shiny hair; B12 to neutralize premature hair loss; vitamin C and zinc to help strengthen hair; biotin to avoid hair loss and premature graying; vitamin D to facilitate healthy follicular growth; and vitamin E to maintain a healthy, moisturized scalp. Eating whole foods like organic eggs, lentils, spinach, red meat, pumpkin seeds and salmon is ideal, including plenty of fruits and vegetables for vitamins and

minerals. Most vegetable skins are also rich in silica, which helps strengthen hair. Drink More Tea. Green tea, saw palmetto (or its extract) and stinging nettle tea contain ingredients that inhibit the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a compound that’s been linked to thinning hair and pattern baldness, according to Medical News Today. These products are used in battling some forms of alopecia and concentrated ingredients of these teas are available in pill form. Detox. Eliminating alcohol, tobacco and coffee can help. Excessive booze and caffeine lead to dehydration, which makes hair dry and brittle, and also dramatically depletes the body’s iron and zinc levels. Cigarette smoke contains toxins that accelerate hair loss, as well as premature graying. Chill Out. Stress is a widely known factor in hair loss, specifically of a condition called telogen effluvium (Principles of Dermatology, by James Marks and Jeffrey Miller). Meditation and exercise can relieve stress and create a better hormonal balance, thereby helping
to prevent alopecia. Massage of body and scalp also may be beneficial. Adding oils such as almond or coconut infuses the scalp with essential vitamins and minerals. A study by the Journal of Dermatology shows that applying onion juice can lead to hair growth. Treat hair gently, air-drying rather than rubbing it with a towel. Don’t Fake It. Using extensions and weaves or wearing tight wigs or hairpieces daily may damage hair follicles by stressing their anchor to the scalp, accelerating hair loss. Also, hair straighteners, tight pony tails, blow dryers and heated rollers may damage or break off follicles. Consider natural hair dyes. Eschew Shampoo. Most commercial shampoos contain sodium laurel sulphate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulphate because it’s inexpensive, lathers well and typically thickens hair via salt. SLS also corrodes follicles and impairs their ability to grow hair. Consider switching to organic shampoos and conditioners. Jody McCutcheon is a freelance editor in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Nutrition – reaching for more fruits and veggies and preparing whole grains can decline your stress level. When you eat better you feel better. Meditate – meditation causes the mind and body to relax giving you a sense of peace and tranquility which in turns lowers your stress level. Visualization can be practiced anywhere and at any time. Just let your imagination wonder to that place of peace and quiet. Laughing – there’s a reason why they say that laughter is the best medicine. A sense of humor can do wonders to lower stress while it causes positive physical changes in your body. Hang out with your friends, watch a funny movie or show, or play with your kids. Bad Habits – change those nasty habits like smoking, drinking too much alcohol or caffeine, and even overeating. Need we say more! natural awakenings

Buff and Balanced Bodybuilders Turn to Yoga by Aimee Hughes

e don’t typically envision iron-pumping bodybuilders also flowing and breathing through yoga postures, yet many are combining these complementary disciplines to realize huge benefits.
Competitive Edge
Nicolina Sandstedt, a yoga teacher trainer and anatomy expert with the Yandara Yoga Institute, in Baja, Mexico, observes, “The body awareness and alignment focus that the practice of yoga asanas [positions] offers helps bodybuilders find correct posture. Yoga also teaches elegance in transitions that improve competitive posing.” Peter Nielsen, a bodybuilder, yoga practitioner and world-class fitness guru in Detroit, observes, “Most bodybuilders haven’t fine-tuned their presentation. They often grimace and look uncomfortable, with their veins popping out.” He points out, “Yoga helps teach bodybuilders how to slow down, breathe into each posture and ultimately win posing competitions because of the grace, elegance and body awareness that yoga provides.”

core, giving you overall body strength in specific targeted muscle groups. It also increases flexibility, stability and mobility, allowing greater range of motion. Most importantly, it will keep you from being sidelined with injuries.” “Stretching a muscle can make it more aesthetically pleasing,” remarks Sandstedt. “In yoga, we often hold postures for a relatively long period of time, in a more isometric endurance workout, than the short, repetitive movements performed in bodybuilding. Bodybuilding develops fast-twitch muscle fibers for power and speed, while yoga develops slow-twitch muscle fibers for endurance. Both are important for tissues to stay healthy while building muscle mass.” Nielsen notes, “Bodybuilding makes me feel stronger; I look better and have loads of endurance. Yoga makes me feel more centered; it softens me so I can hear and surrender to what my body is telling me rather than me just telling it what to do.” Such listening is essential to preventing injuries that periodically plague bodybuilders. Slowing down into yoga’s present moment awareness teaches bodybuilders how to perform from a place of presence rather than on autopilot, which is when most injuries occur. “Yoga works all the muscles, even the smaller, intrinsic muscles often neglected in bodybuilding,” Sandstedt
says. “In addition to facilitating healthy posture, these small muscles help support balanced joint alignment.” She explains that the explosive, repetitive movements used to build muscle mass in bodybuilding make the muscles less elastic, which also inhibits range of motion. Less elastic muscles may be more prone to injury, as daily activities require both strength and mobility.”
Beginning Yogis
For bodybuilders that want to give yoga a shot, Nielsen advises trying a structured, 30day yoga challenge. He sees how after the first month with his clients, the positive effects become apparent and most bodybuilders don’t want to go back to life before yoga. Sandstedt offers, “I advise newcomers to incorporate a light yoga routine into
the beginning and end of each bodybuilding training session. Ending training sessions with a few yoga postures will help balance the body, bringing a sense of calm and equanimity to the workout experience.” “In my fitness career, I’ve found that yoga perfectly complements any strength training program as a form of stretching, flexibility and de-stressing,” says Nielsen. “Yoga focuses me, and helps me to isolate whatever muscle I choose. It helps me reach my fullest potential and simply makes me a better version of myself.”

Fast Whole-Food
MUNCHIES Tasty Homemade Alternatives to Junk Food by Judith Fertig
P
lanning ahead is an effective key to healthy eating and weight management. Having healthy snacks available, both savory and naturally sweet, helps us to conquer cravings and avoid a sugar rush—or slump. Between-meal nutritious and delicious snacks can be easy to make. Plus, unlike commercial foods, we know their ingredients. Here, Natural Awakenings has tapped two plant-based whole foods experts and cookbook authors for their best snack recipes and tips. “Healthy happens when we’re prepared,” says Elise Museles, of Washington, D.C., the mother of two sons who writes at KaleAndChocolate. com/blog and recently released Whole Food Energy: 200 All Natural Recipes to Help You Prepare, Refuel, and Recover. “Nutritious is delicious; healthy doesn’t have to be bland and boring.” she says. Nor does it take hours to make.
“I pick one day a week to do meal prep,” she explains. “After a visit to our Sunday farmers’ market, I work in the kitchen for a few hours so I’m ready to go on Monday and for the rest of the week.” Whenever hunger threatens to derail her from a whole-foods, nutrientdense diet, Museles is equipped with options like protein balls and carrot hummus. She’s also learned that having naturally sweet foods at hand helps divert cravings, realizing, “You just want a sweet thing more if you think you can’t have it. Plus, I think better when my blood sugar is stable.” Museles combines naturally sweet dried fruits such as goji berries and tropical coconut to make a handy snack mix. “Like blending smoothies, this basic trail mix can have many variations,” she says. She also suggests maintaining a well-stocked freezer. Museles freezes berries in season to pop in the blender for smoothies; pitted and peeled

avocados to thaw and mash over gluten-free toast; and frozen banana slices to layer over nut butter. Canadian Ella Leché, a mother of two daughters best known for her website PureElla.com/blog, is the new author of Cut the Sugar, You’re Sweet Enough cookbook. She came to a plant-based lifestyle in 2008 after a whole foods diet helped her overcome a chronic illness. Her blog documents her journey to wellness—one healthy change at a time. Leché, a graphic designer and photographer in Mississauga, near Toronto, started an elimination diet four months after the birth of her first child, when she noticed puzzling symptoms. “I started to make small changes and slowly but surely, I began to recover,” she says. Today her diet is 90 percent vegan and gluten-free. “I had a sweet tooth, but I didn’t have the balance thing figured out,” Leché admits. Foregoing sugar was hard emotionally, even though her body had difficulties with sugar, which seemed correlated to frequent headaches and mood slumps. Slowly, she started emphasizing naturally sweet, pure foods like dates and fruits and found other ways to ease cravings. “Starting the day with a savory, healthy breakfast can cut sugar from your diet because the sweet taste on our tongue essentially sets the brain into craving sugar,” she says. Leché enjoys involving her children in making snacks like healthy turnip or kale chips. When she gets a hankering for something sweet, she chooses her special cranberry and chocolate protein balls, sweetened with dried fruit and bolstered with almonds and walnuts. They take minutes to make and keep in the refrigerator for a week or in the freezer for up to three months. Having easy-to-prepare, whole food snacks on hand keeps families happily snacking on quick bites and on track with healthy eating. “It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle,” says Museles. “If you like recipes that are good for you, it’s a sustainable lifestyle.” Judith Fertig is the author of the awardwinning Back in the Swing Cookbook and blogs at AlfrescoFoodAndLifestyle. blogspot.com from Overland Park, KS.

relationships are possible in the second half of life, including the greatest sex?
Childrearing responsibilities often decrease in our 40s and 50s, affording more time and resources to invest in the quality of the relationship. Psychological and spiritual maturity also comes into play—the more deeply we know ourselves, the more able we are to communicate meaningfully with our partner. Probably the biggest factor is that
What would you say is the biggest challenge for midlife couples in a longterm relationship? It’s vital to get out of the rut of recycling conflicts and predictable routines in order to liberate a new creativity. Creativity doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. It might be a matter of giving a new way to communicate a whirl or taking a walk together instead of watching TV.
Ultimately, relationships only thrive when both people make an ongoing commitment to investing time and energy to explore their own creative nature. One may elect to learn to play a musical instrument, while the other might take up gardening. The only requirement is that we take on new activities that have the capacity to surprise us.
What tips do you have for those that are single during the second half of their life? Enjoy your singularity! Singlehood affords great opportunities. You can choose whether or not you wish to invest time and energy manifesting a mate. No law requires that everyone has to have an intimate relationship, but if you’d like to, go about the process consciously. First, work on learning to love yourself, because it’s wise not to depend on anyone else to do it for us. Second, figure out what we call your Three Absolute Yesses and Nos, the three most important qualities you want in a mate, and equally important, the three most important things you don’t want in a mate. It’s a good way to avoid mistakes.
Why do you call blame “the crack cocaine of relationships”? When you blame another person for something, you fire up adrenaline both in yourself and the other person. Adrenaline is manufactured by our bodies and is highly addictive. Blame also typically produces a defensive reaction, causing a harmful cycle of two-way criticism and defensiveness that can go on for years. One couple we counseled had been having essentially the same argument since their honeymoon 29 years earlier—so addicted to the adrenalized “cocaine” of blame that it had become a permanent feature of their relationship. The answer is for each person to take healthy responsibility for issues in the relationship and together seek ways to both break unhealthy habits and replace them with mutually satisfying ways of relating. Hot Days Are Hard on Pets How to Prevent, Detect and Treat Heatstroke by Shawn Messonnier
A
s outdoor temperatures heat up, pets may suffer from the effects of increased ambient temperatures. While problems such as squamous cell carcinoma and moist dermatitis (skin hot spots) increase along with temperatures and amount of sun exposure, the most serious heat-related health issue is heatstroke. Holistic vets recommend some simple, commonsense steps that will help and also possibly save a pet’s life. Heat stroke in both people and pets develops when core body temperature rises and stays above a certain level. In dogs and cats, the tipping point tends to be a body temperature higher than 106 degrees Fahrenheit. This can happen more quickly in overheated dogs and cats because they don’t have the ability to sweat in order to cool off like people do; this is due to a lack of eccrine sweat glands over most of their body surface. Panting can reduce body temperature, but is inefficient and easily overwhelmed if their temperature rises quickly and a pet can’t remove 34

itself from the surrounding warm environment. Dogs such as pugs and bulldogs that have a short, broad skull are especially at risk due to genetically impaired breathing structures; they can easily overheat even in mildly warm weather. Ferrets and rabbits are especially prone to heatstroke because they typically dwell in cooler temperatures. As a result, these small mammals do best when housed indoors rather than outside; outdoor time should be limited and supervised. Heatstroke in pets is usually easy to detect for a pet with a history of being in a hot environment from which it cannot escape to cool itself in shade or water or take a refreshing drink. Excess panting, dark red gums and a “hot feel” to the ears and hairless skin of the abdomen are clues. First-aid involves quickly cooling the animal and notifying the veterinarian that a pet suffering from heatstroke is on the way. Wetting it will begin the process. Applying either ice packs or ice cubes in a plastic bag
www.namiami.com
wrapped in a towel to avoid freezing the skin also helps. Recommended spots for the packs are on the back of the neck, armpits and groin, as these areas have large arteries and veins close to the surface. If possible, don’t spend much time on these actions, because getting the pet to the doctor quickly is the overriding goal. Administering homeopathic drops of arnica and hypericum via the mouth from a natural home first-aid kit while en route to the vet may assist healing. Treatment at the veterinary hospital involves continued cooling, including intravenous fluids and cool water enemas. Cooling the pet must be done quickly in order to restore enzyme systems to normal functioning. Hospitalization will likely be required to evaluate the patient for potential serious complications, including cardiac arrest, shock, septicemia, bloody diarrhea, and disseminated intravascular coagulation to ensure against a usually fatal disorder involving the pet’s blood-clotting mechanisms. With prompt assistance, most pets with heatstroke will recover, but treatment can be extensive and expensive. The most important aspect is initiating it early to prevent permanent organ and brain damage. Prevention is ideal and preferred over the need for treatment. Guard against leaving furred pets outdoors for extended periods of time during hot weather. Pets that must be outside need protection from the heat and sun in shaded areas with access to plenty of fresh cool water; provide several water bowls. Opinion is divided about whether longer-haired pets seem more comfortable and have fewer weatherrelated problems if their hair is cut short, but don’t cut it down to the skin, as that removes their protective coat and predisposes them to sunburn. A good rule of thumb is that if it’s too hot for the pet’s person, it’s too hot for the pet. Practice forward thinking and willingness to let go of the past. People with high EI are too busy thinking of future possibilities to dwell upon things that didn’t work out in the past. They apply lessons learned from past missteps in taking future actions. They never see failure as permanent or a personal reflection of themselves. Look for ways to make life more fun, happy and interesting. At work, at home and with friends, high EI people know what makes them happy and look for opportunities to expand the enjoyment. They receive pleasure and satisfaction from seeing others happy and fulfilled, and do whatever they can to brighten someone else’s day. Expend energy wisely. High EI folks don’t hold onto anger over how others have treated them, but use the incident to create awareness of how to not let it happen again. While they move on and forgive, they don’t forget, and are unlikely to be taken advantage of again in the same set of circumstances.
Emotional Smarts
Always learn and grow. High EI people are lifelong learners, constantly growing and evolving. Being critical thinkers, they are open to changing their minds if someone presents a better idea. They trust themselves and their own judgment to make the best decision for themselves.

he role of emotional intelligence (EI) in helping to facilitate success and happiness in individual lives has become well accepted. People with high EI tend to share seven habits.
Focus on the positive. While not ignoring bad news, EI people have made a conscious decision to not spend much time and energy focusing on problems. Rather, they look at what’s positive in a situation and seek solutions. They focus on what can be done and what’s within their control. Associate only with positive people. High EI people regard complainers and negative people as energy drains. They tend to avoid them to maintain their own vitality. Instead, they spend time with those that look on the bright side of life. They tend to smile and laugh and attract other positive people. Their warmth, openness and caring attitude leads others to regard them as more trustworthy. Set boundaries and assert a position. Although their friendly, open nature may make them appear as pushovers to some, people with high EI are able to set boundaries and assert themselves when necessary; they demonstrate politeness and consideration, yet stay firm. High EI people guard their time and commitments and know when they need to say no. They don’t make needless enemies. Their response to potentially volatile situations is measured, not inflated, and managed appropriately. They think before speaking, allowing themselves time to calm down if their emotions start to feel overwhelming.

DAD MATTERS

merican fatherhood has evolved considerably in the last 50 years. While dads used to be kept out of the delivery room, today, more than 90 percent of new fathers are present for their children’s birth, reflected in MenCare Advocacy’s State of the Worlds’ Fathers. However, being there early on does not necessarily define the scope of future involvement. Overcoming obstacles that might keep men from being the “high-five” dads they and their family need them to be is key. Involved fathers benefit children. Most research on child development has focused on how mothers influence their children, but in recent decades, society has “discovered” fathers. In many studies, pioneering Psychologist Ross Parke, Ph.D., professor emeritus of University of California, Riverside, and others have conclusively shown that children of more-involved dads are better at solving puzzles, score higher on cognitive skills tests, do better in school, are more likely to go to college, are more empathetic, manage their emotions better, have fewer behavior problems, are less likely to suffer from depression or mental illness and are less likely to break laws or become teen parents. Fathering tip: Never miss an opportunity to change a diaper, play with the kids, read stories together or
www.namiami.com
simply ask them about their day. Equal workplace policies matter. The U.S. is the only economically advanced country that has no nationally mandated paid maternity leave policy and is absent a national paternity leave policy, paid or unpaid. When men don’t get time off to learn basic parenting skills, it’s harder for them to stay engaged later. In 1977, 41 percent of women and 35 percent of men in dual-earner couples reported work-family life conflicts. Today, the figures are 47 percent and 60 percent, respectively, according to the Families and Work Institute’s ongoing National Study of the Changing Workforce. Parenting tip: Advocate for national, paid parenting leave policies for men and women starting with local employers. It benefits both families and companies. Studies by Stanford University, the Families and Work Institute, Gallup, Inc. and others have found that companies with familyfriendly benefits enjoy more loyal employees, better morale, lower turnover, fewer arbitrary sick days, higher levels of customer service and higher shareholder returns—all of which contribute to their bottom line. Both genders can be naturally nurturing. Certainly, women are biologically adapted for giving birth and breastfeeding, but Parke found that caring new dads typically cuddle,
coo, giggle, rock and feed their babies just as much as new mothers. One hurdle men face is that they usually have to return to work sooner, and their natural nurturing skills can get rusty, while moms’ get sharper. Opportunity and practice are the biggest predictors of meaningful connections with children. Fathering tip: Don’t assume that a partner knows more. Whatever a mother knows, she learned by making mistakes, and that’s the best way for fathers to learn, too. Be open to complementary expertise. A dad with a mate that praises and supports him will be far more confident and engaged with his child than one with a partner that criticizes him. Parenting tip: No one likes to feel incompetent, so when offering dad advice, do it in a nonthreatening way that supports and compliments his improving skills over time. It may mean adjusting personal standards a bit. Dad should take pride in practicing his unique rapport with offspring. Instead of letting mom pluck a crying or smelly baby from his arms, he can try, “Honey, I’ve got this.” End-running the legal system after divorce. For some 30 years, the default decision in divorce cases has been to award the mother primary physical custody, with limited visitation for the father. More states are now moving toward a presumption of 50-50 physical custody, but it’s not the norm. Therefore, many divorced dads may feel disconnected from their children and suppressed in their parenting role moving forward. Fathering tip: Never give up. Children need their dad in their life and vice-versa. It’s critical to stay in touch. In person is best; phone, email and Skype are decent fallbacks. Make time together feel meaningful as well as normal, instead of falling into a “Disneyland dad” syndrome of trying to make every moment a party. Practice harmonious communications with the ex. The biggest known predictor of children’s future mental and emotional health is how well their parents get along. Separated parents don’t have to be friends, but they do need to acknowledge both parents’ importance to the children and treat each other respectfully. DEAR DEPLOYED DAD by Armin Brott
F
or parents serving in the military, some of the biggest barriers to involvement are inevitable and often repeated deployments. Dads returning home often struggle to reestablish both their family role— which changed while they were away—and their relationships with children they haven’t seen for months and who may not even recognize them. Here are practical tips to counter any estrangement. Talk to your children before you leave and tell them, in age-appropriate terms, what’s happening and why. Record yourself reading a child’s favorite book and ask mom to play it every night. Their hearing your voice while you’re gone will make it easier for them to get used to having you home again. During deployment, communicate with home as much as possible by phone, Skype and email, taking into account time zone differences and military security. Don’t underestimate the power of snail mail. Little things—a dried leaf from a tree near the barracks, a film canister full of sand—let a child know Dad is thinking of them and
provides tangible signs that he’s in a real place somewhere. Upon returning home, take it easy and don’t expect to be able to simply pick up where you were when you left. Everyone in the family has changed, and likely become stronger via the experience. Some things may never return to the pre-deployment normal, but the new normal can be just as good—or better. In addition to the option of couch surfing (Tinyurl.com/CouchsurfingAdventure), more people are making the most of house rentals, swapping and sitting, plus various home stays via AirBnB (Airbnb. com). All expand options for affordable journeys tailored to their needs. AirBnB accommodations range from private studios to family-sized homey spaces, encompassing tiny houses, treehouses, geodesic domes, yurts, container cars, caves, lighthouses, working ranches, castles and luxury carriage houses. With 2 million listings for 34,000 cities in 190 countries, 600 million people have found their ideal getaway through the San Francisco-based company since it launched in 2008. Hosts find providing rentals a way to monetize unused space, meet new people and showcase their area. Beth Everett, an Oregon author, offers an AirBnB detached backyard studio space. “We moved from New Jersey to Portland two years ago, and the extra income lets me stay home to write,” she says. House swapping is another option for soaking in local color. Preparation is key and includes a notebook’s worth of helpful details shared in advance, as well as onsite. Most exchanges involve a series of Skype sessions for questions and answers. Leasa Sanders McIntosh, an executive recruiter, swapped her Denver home for a month in Kona, Hawaii. “We traded cars and joked that we even traded cats. We swapped three times before they moved to the mainland.” This summer, she’ll swap to be at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Burke combines housesitting with AirBnB by renting her apartment when she travels. “A couple of years ago, I paid $1,800 for a two-week trip to Thailand and charged $125 a night for my apartment, making my trip to Thailand free,” she relates. Burke lives near the Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach and Hollywood, all prime destinations. With 50,000 listings in 150 countries, Homestay.com tweaks the AirBnB experience in that hosts are more involved in their guests’ local adventures. Cuba currently tops desired destinations for U.S. travelers, with most rentals in the capital, Havana, the nearby artistic enclave of Trinidad or rural Vinales. Many hosts arrange airport transfers, tours, visits to attractions, bicycle rentals, restaurant reservations and transportation to other Cuban locales. Hosts usually speak several languages, including English, and may even teach guests to play Cuban-style dominoes. Eco-friendly homestays are available, too, ranging from a private Nicaraguan island independently powered by solar panels and a Spanish farmhouse off the grid to an organic farm in Thailand or eco-lodge in South Africa. An Austin,Texas, listing notes, “Everything is reclaimed, recycled or repurposed. We have an infused honey business. We’re laid-back and practice good karma and a healthy, drama-free lifestyle.” Homestay’s average nightly rental is $46. While some guests are students, the majority are 35 and older, vacationing on substantial salaries; they simply prefer the local color. Vacations needn’t be expensive, but they should be memorable. The biggest challenge may be deciding where to go first.

Fatigue means that the blood quality is acidic and we are having a hard time maintaining an alkaline condition. The extremes in the modern diet are the main contributing factor to this.
Fatigued? No Energy? Veggies for Vitality and a Dynamic Life by Warren Kramer
T
he number one health complaint in the world today is fatigue, simply not having the energy to do what one wants to do. From a holistic perspective, the cause is most often from an imbalance in diet, eating habits and lifestyle. When people are tired, they continue to make food and lifestyle choices that perpetuate the problem. Fatigue means that the blood quality is acidic and we are having a hard time maintaining an alkaline condition. The extremes in the modern diet are the main contributing factor to this. On one end you have poor quality, refined, salt, baked flour products, eggs, cheese, meat and animal protein in general. On the other end of the spectrum you have alcohol, chemicals, preservatives, sugar, soft dairy, tropical fruits and nightshade vegetables, to name a handful. These extremes quickly imbalance our blood and affect us physically, mentally and emotionally. Essentially we are swinging from one end to the other, leading to fatigue. As we get more fatigued we lose minerals as our body starts to excrete calcium 40

to neutralize the acid. Mentally we feel more pessimistic about life in general, we lose our hopefulness and start to complain more. Simply put, we are not as happy. Our sleep is often thrown off and we consume sugar and coffee even more to keep our energy up. The result is the increase of aches and pains as our blood quickly declines. THE SOLUTION TO THIS DOWNWARD SPIRAL IS VEGETABLES. When I was growing up my vegetable of choice was ketchup! I was practically drinking it out of the bottle and I covered all of my food with the sugared tomato paste. I was truly addicted to sugar and had no taste for vegetables. In my early 20’s when I was introduced to macrobiotics and vegan food, I did not like vegetables as I had no taste for them. Slowly but surely over time, as my health changed by eating plant-based foods, my taste and love for vegetables grew. Vegetables can be classified in three main categories: round, root and leafy. All are beneficial for us both nutritionally and energetically. Round support the spleen, pancreas and stomach while roots nourish our intestines. Leafy vegetables nourish our liver and the upper part of the body. Vegetables
www.namiami.com
have a powerful energy about them that will both ground us in life and give an upward lift to our energy. We need a nice balance of these categories. VEGETABLES HELP TO ALKALIZE OUR BLOOD AND NEUTRALIZE ACIDITY. They are key to help satisfy sweet cravings, especially eating squash, sweet potato, cabbage and parsnips. Leafy greens like kale, collards, watercress, salad mixes and others all nourish the liver and give us that lightness. Onions, turnips and beets are helpful to strengthen the pancreas. Lightly cooked vegetables that have some crunch help to release pressure in our body and mind. Preparing vegetables in different ways supports us in living a dynamic life. Styles of cooking include steamed, blanched, quick sauté, pressed, baked, pickled, raw and grated. Each style brings out a different aspect of nutrition and contributes to our overall vitality. They also give us improved flexibility in our body and mind. So for great energy, clarity and a life full of adventure, eat those wonderful vegetables! Warren Kramer is an internationally recognized macrobiotic counselor, lecturer and cooking teacher with over 29 years of experience. He has guided thousands of people back to health over the years. A faculty member of the Kushi Institute (he assisted Michio Kushi for over 10 years in Boston) and the Strengthening Health Institute, Kramer teaches in 10 cities throughout the U.S. and Canada. Holistic Midwifery Care by Debra Geymayr
H
olistic midwifery care means letting nature takes its course with the least amount of intervention and stress. Pregnancy and birth are viewed as a woman’s passage into motherhood, an extremely empowering event for mother, child and family. Midwifery care is proven to reduce medical interventions during pregnancy, labor and birth. A midwife spends more time with expecting moms during prenatal appointments when compared to an OB/GYN visit. Midwifery care is using the time together to build a relationship, educate mothers about pregnancy and prepare for natural childbirth, eradicating fears associated with the most normal, beautiful and powerful experience in a woman’s life. Midwives are practitioners in their own right. A registered nurse midwife possesses a nursing graduate degree, has passed the NCLEX examination for registered nurses and the American Midwifery Certification Board exam. In addition, they hold an active registered nurse license and keep updated and informed on medical knowledge in their field. A midwife today helps an expecting mom in all the ways a doctor does, except for major surgical procedures. Pauline Theobalds, is a Registered Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) at Holistic South Pregnancy & Birth Center (HSPBC), the first and only birth center in South Florida located directly across the street from a hospital. She explains the difference in care, “I spend time with my patients. Women want to come see us and are glad to hear what we have to say. It’s a whole different environment.” Dr. Ronald Sancetta, Medical Director at HSPBC, explains,
“I have practiced obstetrics for 30 years. As a resident, our caesarian section rate was about 7%. Today C-section rates run 50-60%, so because of this, patients who want a natural experience are not happy. A birth center like HSPBC is really needed in the community, many people will be well served. It was important to find space for a center in close proximity to a hospital. In the event we need to transfer, I have a very low caesarian rate, and I would still hope to get mothers the vaginal birth they are trying to achieve.” Transfer time, if necessary, is safe for mother and baby. In case of an emergency, the transfer time to Jackson South Community Hospital is less than a (3) minute walk and quicker than in most instances from a hospital delivery room to the surgical/operation room. Roughly one of every three babies are delivered through C-section each year, according to a Consumer Reports study published in April 2016. In Miami, the number doubles with 40 of every 100 deliveries in 2004. In contrast, a midwife keeps a safe, calm environment, women have the freedom to move around, use their natural instincts, eat and drink during the birthing process. Waterbirth and Gravity Birth TM options help baby’s ultimately come down and out. “Everything slows down during labor, attitudes have to slow down, even movements,” explains midwife Theobalds. “You don’t want anything agitating in the room. Using calming aromas and music. The room needs to be calm. Sometimes you go into a hospital delivery room and it’s like a football game. Women have to labor baby down. This takes time, baby needs patience to work on the pathway down. I feel if you force the baby down the birth path they don’t like it and get distressed. You have to have patience.” Holistic South Pregnancy & Birth Center was founded by Debra Geymayr, Directress of Prenatal Plus Yoga, Inc., in Coral Gables with 15+ years experience and Dr. Ronald Sancetta, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., practicing OB/GYN care for 30 years. HSPBC provides a nurturing environment that includes childbirth education, parenting classes, doula care, prenatal and postpartum yoga and fitness, massage, acupuncture, nutritional support and more. Women’s wellness is provided through all stages of a women’s life from teens to adults. (The word “dandelion” is from Old French and means “lion’s tooth.”) Each spring, after moving to the suburbs, Ed Sr. put great effort into his lawn, planting grass seed, trees, including Japanese maple and dogwood, and evergreen shrubs. A well-manicured lawn was a status symbol in those days. Like millions of other post war suburban dwellers, Ed Sr. probably saw dandelions as unwanted intruders that interfered with the aesthetics of his lawn. Our first dandelion campaign was decidedly low-tech. Ed Sr. had bought a tool, a metal rod, the length of a screwdriver, with a two- pronged fork at the end. In alternating shifts, we would kneel in front of the dandelions and thrust the prong down into the soil. Upon pushing down on the other end, the plant was forced up and out from its firm place in the soil. It required muscular strength to overcome the dandelion’s tenacious hold on the earth. Once dislodged, the entire plant, including root and soil, leaves and stems, and bright yellow flowers was unceremoniously tossed into a plastic trash bag. The following year, we escalated our campaign. Not satisfied with a labor intensive approach, Ed Sr. opted for a

more convenient chemical solution. He procured from the local hardware store a long plastic tube filled with liquid herbicide. At the lower end of the tube was a nozzle, something like a needle, that allowed the toxic brew to spray into the earth. At the upper end was handle, like the handle of a garden hose that applied enough pressure to force the spray into the ground. Tasked with such a questionable mission, Jeffrey and I begrudgingly interrupted guitar practice and took our positions outside on the lawn. We proceeded from dandelion to dandelion, inserting and spraying as instructed. We had an intuitive sense that something was wrong. The dandelions, which were compact, natural, and beautiful, didn’t stand a chance. Once zapped with herbicide, they shriveled into nonexistence. No need to pull them up. Simply spray and go away. I started macrobiotics at the beginning of the 1970s and grew to appreciate the value of dandelion, burdock, kuzu, sea vegetables, and other wild plants used as food and as medicine. I apologize to the dandelions we sacrificed in the 1960s. Due to the influence of macrobiotics, over the decades, Ed. Sr. became more accepting of a natural way. He began to see the importance of macrobiotics for the future of the world, and supported our macrobiotic activities, including books and lecture tours, until his passing in 2014 at age ninety.
Recipe: Sauteed Dandelion Greens (fresh greens also pictured) Over the years, I learned to prepare and enjoy dandelion greens. They are especially good in the spring. One fine spring morning, a number of years ago, I pulled dandelions from our property in the Berkshires. After a thorough cleaning, I sautéed them in olive oil with a little garlic and shoyu (organic soy sauce) as seasoning. They were nourishing and delicious. Dandelion greens have incredibly concentrated flavor and energy. From time to time I buy organic dandelion greens at the natural supermarket and
prepare and enjoy them in the same way. Dandelion Roots. For centuries, dandelion roots and greens have been considered a spring tonic. Dandelions are chock full of vitamins including vitamins A, C, E, K, niacin, and riboflavin as well as the minerals calcium, potassium, iron, and manganese. They are a rich source of beta-carotene. The golden flower contains lecithin that helps detoxify the liver. The milky white liquid that comes out from the stem was traditionally used to ease the pain of bee stings and sores. The roots are used to make tea that strengthens the liver and gall bladder. Dandelion tea can be used as a general detox tea. The benefits of dandelion are too numerous to mention here. Suffice it to say that in overlooking such a natural treasure, modern society obviously has blinders on. FAST FORWARD TO THE PRESENT. The dandelion has become a symbol of organic resistance to society’s war on nature. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Monsanto’s ad campaign for Roundup (glyphosate) herbicide. Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide on the planet. Genetically modified crops such as soybeans, cotton, and corn were invented to increase sales of this product, which is being increasingly linked to a variety of health and environmental concerns. In the famous Monsanto dandelion commercial, sometimes referred to as Sharp Shooter, a lone dandelion sprouts up through the crack in a cement driveway in suburbia. The homeowner appears holding a large jug of Roundup. The jug has the new “sharp shooting wand” attached to it by a small hose. The homeowner appears irate at the “weed” growing in his driveway. As he declares that the “only good weed is a weed that’s dead,” he points the wand at the dandelion, and “points and shoots,” spraying the toxic herbicide into the plant. Bam! The dandelion shrivels and dies. All the while cowboy style electric guitar plays in the background. Paradoxically, just as evidence is coming in linking Monsanto’s glyphosate as a possible cause of cancer, evidence is mounting that reveals the anti-cancer properties of dandelion. Studies on dandelion root extract are currently underway at the Windsor Cancer Centre in Windsor, Ontario. In the study, thirty patients with lymphoma and leukemia are incorporating a special dandelion root extract as part of their cancer treatment. (visit: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ calgary/calgary-anti-cancer-tea-1.3370691 for information about the dandelion study.) I propose that people around the world who oppose Monsanto adopt the dandelion as their official symbol. In fact, I propose naming this movement Dandelion Resistance. Readers who wish to obtain benefit from dandelion can prepare dandelion greens on a regular basis. Organic dandelion greens are available at most natural food groceries. Also, organic dandelion root tea is available in tea bag form. Bring a cup of water to a boil and steep one tea bag (covered) for about ten minutes. Drink the tea hot on a daily basis. The Venerable Dandelion! Its place in our health care! by Margaret Lyles

rowing up in the countryside of Maryland, Dandelions were a great part of my childhood. As children, while we thought they were beautiful in full bloom, and most country parents didn’t mind them in the yard, there were those fastidious ones along the way who treated them as malicious enemies of a well manicured yard. As kids, we loved it when they completed their life expectancy and became little round poofs where the lovely flower had been, and we could pick it and “blow it in the wind.” Now at age 85, and having mastered breast cancer 24 years ago through the Japanese “Macrobiotic Way,” I am “extremely pleased” to find this article by Ed Esko about the value of the venerable Dandelion. Ed was one of my teachers at Kushi Institute [KI] 23 years ago when I attended, “The Way to Health” at the KI in Massachusetts, July of 1993. There, I learned how to conquer my cancer. I met Michio Kushi, founder, recently deceased, after many years of teaching “The Macrobiotic Way”… and many other fine teachers, who studied with Micho who are still alive and teaching Macrobiotics, which means “Living the Great Life!” Ed Esko is one such teacher, and his wife Wendy Esko is a wonderful cooking teacher, who puts her love into the dishes…making them taste superb! Lino Stanchich was my counselor and is still teaching along with his wife Jane Quincannon Stanchich, likewise wonderful cooking teachers, who put their good graces into their recipes and cooking. Both are certified nutritionists, along with being certified Macrobiotic teachers. But NOW….I hope you will have time to read about this lovely little yellow flower and maybe quite surprisingly, learn how God made it to help our health….read on… There is a recipe for cooking the dandelion greens which are very tasty and so chocked full of goodness for us…. It’s a quick, interesting read. For a new summer’s delight… Enjoy ! Love to all, Happy Dandelion picking! Marge Lyles natural awakenings

Developing a Holistic, Natural Plan for Pain and Inflammation presented by Dox Supplements
C
oncern about the risks and side effects of traditional treatments for pain and inflammation has been increasing among consumers. Recent attention to the explosive number of Americans addicted to opiates and heroin in the United States today has named prescription opiates as a key driver of the problem. Many of those who are affected by chronic issues such as joint pain, autoimmune disorders, arthritis, injuries, and other ailments are seeking treatment alternatives as a result. It includes a large number of medical practitioners and physicians, as well. However, pain and inflammation has the potential to be managed and relieved using other means, including a range of natural options. The key is in creating a holistic plan unique to your own body, lifestyle and needs. Here are a few things to consider when exploring natural alternatives, as well as some helpful tips for making a pain or inflammation management plan with your doctor: 1. It’s A Lifestyle - And A Good One: Regular pain and inflammation occurs consistently for those who are affected by issues like injuries, autoimmune disorders or joint problems. Treating the problem can require the same consistent attention and care. Your approach and mindset should be part of an overall, complete life effort. Small changes can make a big difference. It can be as slight as changing your mattress and pillows, diet, or getting regular movement. 2. Learn About Your Options: The increasing consumer demand for pain and inflammation alternatives means there are more options and choices than ever before. What works for some may not work for others, and there is a great deal of information and facts to consider as you 44

explore products and solutions. For example, the quality and potency of ingredients in herbal supplements play a very key role in their effectiveness. We learned this while creating the herbal supplement InflaDox. It was worth putting the extra effort into ensuring we included the very best ingredients and maximized potency. As you explore your pain and inflammation treatment options, the same kind of extra effort to learn can really help. 3. Consider Both Traditional And Cutting Edge: There are dozens of new advancements in pain and inflammation treatment and management. It’s very exciting! But, just the same, many natural remedies for pain and inflammation are among the most common treatments prescribed and have been for decades. Hot and cold therapy, chiropractic, and physical therapy are holistic and just a few examples. Look at all of the options you have, and stay on top of new advancements. With online search, it’s easier than ever to stay updated. 4. Food Can Help - Or Hurt: The role of diet in managing and treating pain and inflammation in the body is one of the most exciting new frontiers for both physicians and patients. Herbal supplements like InflaDox are just one part – everything else you eat can also have a positive or negative effect on your body’s pain and inflammation. Processed foods can aggravate the issue, while whole food items like garlic or stinging nettle have shown promise to help. Work with your doctor to identify any food items to avoid. Often relatively easy dietary changes can make significant difference. Last, it’s important to understand that just as with pharmaceutical medications, consumers need to learn about and understand the natural remedies they’re considering. You may need to try different options as many need to do with traditional care. Take a proactive approach to your care and options. Do the homework, and work with your physician to understand your options, identify any risks and ultimately make the right choices for you. From there, you can take on your treatment and management plan with the confidence that you’re utilizing the best approach and products for you, your lifestyle, and most of all, your body. Coolsculpting The Non-Invasive Alternative to Liposuction for Fat Loss
by Leyda E. Bowes, M.D.
F
or years now, there’s been a great demand for an alternative to liposuction, since considering an invasive option such as conventional liposuction had risks associated with surgery. And even with healthy diet and frequent exercising, there were some areas where fat accumulated that seemed almost impossible to get rid of. But still everyone wanted to reduce bulges of fat and look better. Who would have known 8 years ago that we would soon be able to freeze the fat and that it would “magically” go away? It took the brains of scientists like Doctors Dieter Manstein and Rox Anderson who turned an observation on kids’ cheeks developing dimples due to sucking popsicles, into a non-invasive, safe, effective and permanent fat-removal procedure called “CoolSculpting”. This novel procedure uses a technology called
Cryolipolysis, developed at Harvard Medical School by these two world renowned scientists. CoolSculpting causes fat cells to become crystalized under cold exposure which permanently damages them and leads to their natural death. The fat is then gradually and safely eliminated via the lymphatic system and excreted through the gastrointestinal tract. CoolSculpting allows men and women to feel their best. Conveniently, it takes between 35 to 60 minutes per treatment, and people can go back to regular activities immediately, without having to worry about downtime or scars. The FDA has cleared the CoolSculpting procedure for permanent fat reduction on the abdomen, flanks, thighs, back and underneath the buttocks. Almost every area of stubborn excess fat in the body can be treated with CoolSculpting. Most recently, a smaller size applicator has been developed and cleared by the FDA for the treatment of submental fat, also known as Double Chin. The Coolmini™ applicator is the answer for many people wanting to define the chin and jawline area. Since its FDA clearance in 2009, many clinical studies have been performed confirming the efficacy and safety of CoolSculpting. To date, over 3 million treatments have been performed worldwide. CoolSculpting has become the #1 non-invasive fat removal procedure, delivering consistent and reproducible results. Leyda E. chronic cough, digestive problems and some skin conditions including eczema or varicose veins. It boosts the skin health by toning the skin, reduce herpes, cellulite or acne by promoting the blood flow. In Traditional Chinese Medicine cupping also regulates the flow of energy, blood and lymphatic fluid throughout the body. This automatically helps to improve the immune function and it is why it is associated with benefiting the treatment of lung pathologies, especially chronic coughs, allergies, infections and asthma.
The Many Benefits of Chinese Cupping by Eva Paglialonga
H
ave you ever seen someone with fresh circular skin marks? Although at first these might be hard to look at, there are important reasons why, for thousands of years, Chinese medicine has used this particular therapy. And why its benefits may often outweigh modern medicine techniques. It is called cupping therapy, and has been used extensively to treat a range of health problems and symptoms. By the name, one might have guessed the instrument used in this technique. Originally, and of various shapes, the cups were made of natural horn. But as the technique has spread, other materials such as bamboo, ceramic, glass or plastic are used. But still, much of the cupping methods used today are exactly the same as they were in ancient times. There different types of cupping; dry cupping, fire cupping, bleeding cupping, wet and moving cupping, selected based on the individual needs. Cupping can be used as a stand alone or in conjunction with other alternative practices like acupuncture, massage, or as an adjunct to “Western Medicine” treatments. Originally from China this method was spread to other countries like Japan, 46

Europe and Brazil where today it is still being used as a home remedy, mainly to reduce pain. However, the benefits of cupping go beyond the treatment of pain. The purpose is to promote circulation. Cupping helps to relieve pain by releasing deep tissue in the body, relax tense muscles, and ease stiffness. It also removes heat and pulls out toxins that linger in the body’s tissues. Because of these benefits, cupping has grown to be a strong clinical tool, targeting not only pain, but helping with respiratory problems like asthma, common cold,

PROCEDURE. Suction is created on the skin. The cups contract while on the patient’s skin, which causes suctioning, so the skin is then pulled into the cup, stretching out skin tissue and improving blood flow, which facilitates healing. Most of the time it also promotes relaxation by sedating the central nervous system while under the treatment. Some skin cupping marks may occur as a result of cupping therapy, however they are not painful and will fade away after a couple of days. The full benefits of this therapy are usually achieved between 5 and 10 visits. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) What Is it? by Thomas B. Wachtmann, DC
G
astroesophageal refers to the stomach and esophagus. Reflux means to flow back or return. Therefore, gastroesophageal reflux is the return of the stomach’s contents back up into the esophagus. In normal digestion, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) opens to allow food to pass into the stomach and closes to prevent food and acidic stomach juices from flowing back into the esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when the LES is weak or relaxes inappropriately, allowing the stomach’s contents to flow up into the esophagus. The natural question that often isn’t asked is, “Why exactly does this occur?” Since the word, “disease” has been inappropriately assigned to this condition, it is often assumed that nothing can be done to help except expensive and invasive drugs and surgery. Nothing could be further from the truth, however. The cause of this so called “disease” is actually hidden in the second paragraph of this article. Read it again
and then try to think backward to understand the answer. The reason the LES becomes weak or relaxes inappropriately, causing the symptoms of GERD, is due to abnormal digestion. In other words, gastroesophageal reflux is merely a symptom of some other underlying dysfunction in the body causing incomplete or dysfunctional digestion. Since this is the case, the key to stopping the gastroesophageal reflux is to dig deeper into why it is occurring in the first place. This can be trickier than it sounds, because there are quite a few dysfunctions, infections, deficiencies and predisposing factors that can ultimately lead to the symptoms of GERD. Sometimes there is more than one underlying problem going on at once. Sometimes there is a cascade of problems in which one causes the next. This is where it is vital to continue thinking backward to get to the root problem. One big thing to remember about
abnormal digestion is that it can cause a whole host of other problems besides GERD. Some of these include gastritis and ulcers due to the constant irritation of the tissues of the digestive tract, undigested fecal material leaking directly into the blood stream due to leaky gut syndrome (not a cause, but another symptom), incomplete nutrient absorption leading to other issues, autoimmune conditions, food sensitivities, allergies, etc. Once the cause of abnormal digestion is found, not only will the symptoms of GERD and other digestive complaints go away, overall health will improve due to more efficient digestion and absorption of vital nutrients from food. This in turn may help improve other disorders or diseases that can arise from various nutritional deficiencies. It’s virtually impossible to have good health without good digestion. If something abnormal is present, or if something vital is missing for proper digestion, the body will be at a deficit and other problems will likely ensue at some point. Merely attempting to supplement a deficient nutrient or eat a certain food will do little to help if the body’s ability to break it down and absorb it is compromised. What I attempt my best to do is find the underlying issues that precipitate the symptoms people feel, and fix them. The body will then have the ability to repair itself and become healthier from the inside out. This not only decreases the reliance on symptom reducing substances, but helps allow one to become healthier and live life at an overall higher level. The bottom line is, the healthier you are, the fewer problems you will have. Good digestion is fundamental to this. GERD is a symptom, not a disease. Find the underlying causes, fix them, and the symptoms simply go away. Dr. Thomas B. Wachtmann offers an individualized functional medicine approach using unique diagnostics, and customized clinical nutrition treatments for a wide variety of conditions. Discovering and treating the true cause of a problem is his specialty. Call 610-8413395 or visit DrWachtmann.com for more information.

A Hidden Gem A
new multi-purpose facility is welcoming its Miami neighbors to a not so new idea. Located in the heart of the Wynwood Art District, The Sacred Space Miami is helping our community acclimate to the benefits of a more balance and healthy lifestyle. Nurturing the mind, body and spirit, they host a synergistic menu of workshops, classes, and special events, while offering state of the art facilities for corporate retreats, weddings and so much more. One can truly feel the tranquil yet purposeful energy from the moment you enter the facility.
CC. Karla Dascal and I are co-founders of The Sacred Space Miami. For many years, Karla had an event space for social and corporate celebrations that she was letting some of the conscious community use for informal workshops and gatherings, including what is now our signature movement practice, Prayerdanse. She then met Chef Matthew Kenney, and invited him to partner on a plant-based restaurant at the space. Matthew came with his culinary academy, an incredible addition to the property and overall vision. I had been living in New York and Los Angeles as an actress, teaching yoga and working with a holistic nutrition company on the side, to stay involved in projects that I enjoyed and believed in. Once I moved to Miami, I thought about leaving acting to dedicate myself to wellness work. Funny enough, three different people ended up referring me to Karla. When we met we quickly realized that we both shared this passion and wanted to bring something new and exciting in wellness to Miami; I joined the team right away while the project was still in construction phase, heading up all wellness programming and overseeing all components of the conscious campus. With our different ideas and backgrounds in wellness coming together, The Sacred Space Miami was finally born.
Natural Awakenings visited The Sacred Space Miami and sat down with co-founder Chira Cassel for an exclusive chat about their vision and purpose.

do is to plant for the bees. If you must have grass—which is no benefit to our pollinators—don’t use herbicides. Let those dandelions grow! Start some Milkweed, or let the clover intermingle through the yard. Those are foods for bees and pollinators. Dead Nettle and Hen Bit are some of nature’s first foods in the spring for pollinators. Maybe take a corner of your back yard and create a pollinator-friendly area with native plants. They can look quite beautiful if designed correctly. Or for a less structured look, don’t mow and let an area go wild. Simply throw native plant seeds out and let them do what they will. The pollinators will thank you by being around to pollinate the veggies in your garden and fruit on your trees.
Be Good to the Bees by Gladys Hutson
M
any concerned with the decline in our Honey Bee population may know that President Obama has created a task force entitled “Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators.” It was implemented in June of 2014. The First National Conference on Protecting Pollinators in the Ornamental Landscapes was held in October and was well-attended. Almost every state college in the U.S. was represented at the conference, which included those from the UK and Canada as well. The president’s task force approved grant money allowing field trials to be conducted regarding the status of our pollinators. A day and a half of reports presented by professors and undergrad students about these field trials showed overwhelming evidence that there has been a decline of all pollinators due to three factors: lack of habitat, pests and pesticides. For those who may not know, pollinators refer to Honey Bees as well as Native Pollinators (Bumble Bees, Orchard Mason Bees, Leaf Cutter Bees, etc.) There was no media present at this conference and none of this made headlines news. The silver lining was learning that studies and trials are now being undertaken by people unrelated to the companies that produce the pesticides in question. Below are summaries of the three issues stated. Lack of Habitat: Urban sprawl is at an all-time high. Subdivisions are popping up all over, on land that was previously farmed or wooded. Most new subdivisions enforce Home Owners Association (HOA) rules and ordinances in their sale contracts. HOA ordinances often include clauses forcing the homeowner to have what could be called a “cookie cutter” yard: grass, no weeds, and all the same button-shaped bushes and shrubs. This is what is referred to as “mono culture.” Many of the Japanese or Chinese cultivated varieties of bushes and plants have no food value for our pollinators. So what can a home owner in a subdivision such as this do for our pollinators? This is a difficult question because these HOAs have a lot of power. However, approaching your HOA to see if by-laws can be revised to include the addition of some native plants that are beneficial to our pollinators is a step in the right direction. For those not regulated by an HOA, the best thing to 50

Pests: The bees are really under siege from a pest called the Varroa Mite. It is a mite that attaches to the bee and kills them. They are horrible pests and are responsible for many losses in the Honey Bee apiaries. The average person can’t do much about this pest. However, much research is being done to breed mite-resistant bees. A recent study shows a positive result when mushroom fungi is fed to the bees. Most colleges have research programs studying this pest. N.C. State has a very active program. Those interested in increasing our Honey Bee populations can support these programs with a financial contribution. Pesticides: Everyone can do something in this category! Try to increase your tolerance for a bug or two in your garden. Their life cycles are pretty short. In Mother Nature, there is a balance. There are good bugs and bad bugs. When people kill the bad bugs they reduce the food source for the good bugs, so they go elsewhere. Sometimes a spray of water can dislodge an insect such as an aphid. If we must use a chemical, choose a less toxic one and always spray either early morning or late evening when pollinators are not out foraging, and please never use Sevin Dust! There is probably a group of Master Gardeners in your county. Before you spray, ask a Master Gardener an alternative way to deal with the pest(s) that you are encountering. You can find Master Gardeners through your County Extension Service. By all working together and learning the best practices to manage pests, we will in turn be helping to save our pollinators. Education is the key! Gladys Hutson is a Beekeeper and Master Gardener, as well as the Piedmont Regional Director of the N.C. General Precautions to Consider From the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue – Venom Response Bureau
S
ummer is here. And bees are part of our environment. It is important that you take certain precautions when outdoors to protect yourself, your family, your home and property from bees. They will choose a nesting site in many places where people may disturb them. Nesting cavities may include: buckets, cans, empty boxes, old tires, BBQ grills, or any container ranging in volume from as little as 2 to 10 gallons or more. Bees may also choose to nest within rarely used vehicles, lumber piles, holes and cavities in fences, trees and the ground, in sheds, garages, and other outbuildings, between walls or in the open, low decks or crawl spaces under buildings. But the most important precaution to remember is to call a professional if you find bees anywhere on your property-DO NOT attempt to remove them yourself.
Here are some simple guidelines to follow: • • • • • • • • •
Have a bee safety plan in place for your family. Teach children to be cautious and respectful of all bees. Watch for bees when outdoors. Listen for buzzing and look for bees entering or leaving the same area, this could indicate a nest or swarm of bees. Carefully enter sheds and outbuildings where bees may nest. Examine work areas prior to using noisy power equipment such as lawn mowers, weed cutters, and chain saws. Check animal areas for bees before tying up or penning pets and livestock. If you know you to are allergic to bee stings ask your doctor about a sting kit Never disturb a swarm or colony of bees- contact a pest control company or your local cooperative extension agent. In Miami Dade: 305-248-3311, web: http://miamidade.Ifas.ufl.edu/
What to do if you find bees on your property • Stay away from all honey bee swarms and colonies. • If you happen to encounter bees retreat from the area as quickly and quietly as possible. • While running away protect your face and eyes as much as possible. • Take shelter in an enclosed area such as a car, house or building. • Call a local bee keeper, pest control company or cooperative extension agent. In miami dade : • 305-248-3311. • Do not try to hide in water or thick brush. • Do not stand still and swat at bees; rapid movements will further agitate the bees.
What to do if you are stung The lethal dose of bee venom is highly variable, ranging from 1 to 1000’s of stings. A toxic dose is estimated around 5 to 10 stings per pound of body weight. People with weakened immune systems, children, and small adults are at greater risk. About 1,000 stings will place a healthy 150lb adult at risk of death. An average size colony, which is on the defensive, easily can produce this number of stings! Any number of stings can be dangerous. SEEK MEDICAL CARE IF YOU ARE STUNG BY MANY BEES. Get a sting kit from your doctor if you are allergic to bee venom, a single sting can be fatal if you have a severe reaction! • Get away from the bees as quickly as possible, seek shelter in an enclosed area • Pull or scrape stingers from the skin as soon as possible. Most venom is released in the first minute. • Wash stung areas with soap and water like any other wound to prevent Infection. • Apply ice to relieve pain and swelling. • Seek medical attention if breathing is difficult, if stung many times, or if you are allergic to bee stings. resource: www.miamidade.gov natural awakenings

The Man Boob Epidemic Hormonal Shifts and Toxicity Cause New Concerns for Men
By Kurt Waples
I
t is no secret that the United States is the heaviest nation on Earth. Of the developed nations, we are among the sickest and consume the most processed, ultra-processed, genetically modified, non-organic, toxin-laden foods. Yet, despite our poor health habits, we are still surprised by the rate of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and overall lack of health and our morbidity rates. We consume almost 50 percent of the world’s prescription drugs; these drugs are designed to prevent symptoms of disease, not necessarily to promote and maximize health. One issue arising from this cultural pattern is a new epidemic of “man boobs”. Yes, you read that correctly. Man-boobs are characterized as excess pectoral fat—or fat around the pectoral region—and a circumstance that is extremely damaging, both to the ego and the body’s biochemistry. It is an indicator that a man’s body is converting testosterone into estrogen, thus creating the internal hormone profile of a woman. When a man has excessive fat tissue 52

in the pectoral area, he now officially has more similarities than he would like to the hormone profile of a woman. You must have a high estrogen and low testosterone circumstance in the body to grow breasts. A man needs testosterone to function and live. Low ‘T’ levels is an epidemic and simply giving men prescription testosterone has not helped the problem. The numbers all indicate this problem is only growing. Focused Detoxification is Key This is not solely an obesity issue; pectoral fat does not discriminate between larger and skinnier men. However, it does have a link to toxicity in the body— specifically, heavy metal toxicity. One major problem with this specific type of toxicity—which leads to man boobs—is that a healthy lifestyle will not entirely be corrective. Eating an organic, Paleostyle diet with minimal grains and high fruits and vegetable content is a must. And, if coupled with a weight training, interval-type workout plan, the signs of man boobs can lessen slightly.
www.namiami.com
However, dietary and lifestyle modifications will not completely correct the excess pectoral fat issue as we cannot work out toxins. Those must be forced out with a focused detoxification plan. In the case of heavy metals, toxicity must be pulled out through either chelation therapy or with a heavy metal-focused detoxification plan which seeks to increase the number and effectiveness of metallothione. Metallothione is a zinc-dependent molecule associated with the body’s own internal heavy metal detoxification process. By supporting metallothione production and heavy metal detoxification, pectoral fat disappears. Testosterone numbers, focus and drive, sexual function and overall manliness all improve alongside one another. If more than 3-6 millimeters of fat is present when we pinch our pectoral area, then we have too much pectoral fat. Men need and thrive on a atmosphere with high testosterone and low estrogen so the focus ought to be on creating the right environment in the body for the hormones to balance. Kurt Waples, DC, is founder and clinical director of Bluestone Health Group, a detoxification-focused natural medicine clinic located in Stamford, CT. Protect Your Thyroid with Detoxified Iodine Give Your Body the Natural Boost it Needs
The Hidden Deficiency Having the proper amount of iodine in our system at all times is critical to overall health, yet the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that iodine deficiency is increasing drastically in light of an increasingly anemic national diet of unpronounceable additives and secret, unlabeled ingredients. This deficit now affects nearly three-quarters of the population.
Causes of Iodine Deficiency
Radiation
Almost everyone is routinely exposed to iodine-depleting radiation
Low-Sodium Diets
Overuse of zero-nutrient salt substitutes in foods leads to iodine depletion
Iodized Table Salt
Iodized salt may slowly lose its iodine content by exposure to air
Bromine
A toxic chemical found in baked goods overrides iodine's ability to aid thyroid
Iodine-Depleted Soil Poor farming techniques have led to declined levels of iodine in soil
A Growing Epidemic Symptoms range from extreme fatigue and weight gain to depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, fibrocystic breasts and skin and hair problems. This lack of essential iodine can also cause infertility, joint pain, heart disease and stroke. Low iodine levels also have been associated with breast and thyroid cancers; and in children, intellectual disability, deafness, attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and impaired growth, according to studies by Boston University and the French National Academy of Medicine.
What to Do The easy solution is taking the right kind of iodine in the right dosage to rebalance thyroid function and restore health to the whole body.

the silence. The noisy environment in which we live is filled with outer distractions and meditation can seem virtually impossible. Perhaps because society is so noisy, the thought of being silent is only perceived as being more difficult. That perception can be very real especially when you are stressed and seeking an answer to a seemingly difficult situation. Attempts at meditation can be described as mind over matter. The seriousness of dedication to a practice can be either a catalyst or sometimes a hindrance to success. Hypnosis can be a great alternative to meditation. Hypnosis can help you achieve the meditative state of peace. It works deep in the subconscious mind and hypnotists are professionally trained to get you to the trance level quickly, even instantly in some cases. The trance state is important because it is a vital component of bypassing the conscious thinking mind that accelerates the manifestation of intended desires or goals. Trance level is the space where peace surpasses understanding. It is a state of emptiness and openness. When the conscious and subconscious minds agree on an intended desire and the physical body is relaxed, there is a greater degree of success in manifestation. In this state of relaxation you are able to access the root or cause of where a situation or circumstance first began. In this state of relaxation you are able to visualize your goals as happening. Hypnosis can help you achieve this state.
Hypnosis An Alternative for Reaching Silence by Karen Saunders
S
ilence….a powerful tool we each are born with, can change how we feel, mold who we want to be and give us entirely new fresh perspective on life. There are alternatives to achieving for many, silence comes in the form of meditation, a dedicated time of turning off the days’ activities and going within oneself for the positive benefits it provides.
A metaphysical visionary with a passion for the healing arts, Karen Saunders is in private practice. She is a hypnosis instructor with the National Guild of Hypnotists, a transformational life coach, meditation mentor, speaker and workshop facilitator. Trained by Dr. Brian Weiss in past life regression she is the author of What Happens When Affirmations Don’t Work?, currently on amazon.com. Meditation can be sometimes be daunting. Sounds nice but many ask who has the time? Although there are currently over 1.2 million references related to meditation techniques listed on Google in the worldwide web, meditation is still described by many people as mysterious, often daunting, hard to achieve and nearly impossible to practice. People find it hard to commit. With so much debate and hesitancy surrounding the practice of meditation, and many people who, regardless of how many times they attempt it, just can’t seem to sit in silence, many give up, describing the process of meditation as simply too difficult. It is interesting that something designed to bring about calmness can actually create stress. One major complaint is that, the more one attempts to quite the mind, the more profound and dominate the incessant chatter becomes. It can seem as if there is an internal battle going on within to resist natural awakenings
