publisher’sletter Women = ALL
“T
his is the time for women to truly rise and show their strengths,” I share with a friend while discussing the current atmosphere surrounding women’s issues. “We’ve always been the quiet warriors and its time we are not only heard but seen.” Women stand together for reforms on issues such as reproductive rights, domestic violence, maternity leave, equal pay, women’s suffrage, sexual harassment, and sexual violence, to name a few. They called it the “woman’s movement” and historically it has been here for a while. We had the first wave around the 19th and early 20th century, when women demanded and won their right to vote, among other things. That was followed by our struggle for everything from domestic violence to work equality during the 60’s and 70s. Last year a crowd of hundreds of thousand filled Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C. during the Women’s March, January 21st. This demonstration however, was not just about women’s rights, but as the silent warriors emerging from the back roe, we shed light on everything that needs national attention. In solidarity women came together to protest for legislation and new policies on human rights, healthcare, immigration reform, reproductive rights, LGBT rights, racial equality, workers rights, religious freedom, protecting our natural environment, etc., and more importantly recognizing and demonstrating that our diversity is our strength as a country. In the aftermath, the lives of women in this country, and all over the world, dramatically began to change through countless movements and organizations. United, forging a stronger and brighter future for generations to come. Every March is Women’s History Month, where America honors the heroines who fought for women’s freedom and gender equality. Natural Awakenings extends that honor by celebrating women and motherhood in May. Their impact in each of us and society as a whole is immeasurable. As a result, this issue is filled with tips and information to support women’s health, strength, love, and sacrifice for their children. I’ve been facing countless health challenges since childhood. Through wisdom, love, patience and strength of character from my own heroine, my Mom, I’ve survived and strived. And although she claims she never needs or wants anything, this mother’s day I’m hoping to let her know that I understand my strength of heart, mind, spirit and body, all because of her. In the words of Helen Reddy’s song, I AM Woman, I thank her because I AM illimitable and can be and do it ALL if I choose. I am woman, hear me roar/ In numbers too big to ignore/And I know too much to go back an’ pretend/ Cause I’ve heard it all before/And I’ve been down there on the floor/No one’s ever gonna keep me down again./Oh yes, I am wise/ But it’s wisdom born of pain/ Yes, I’ve paid the price/But look how much I gained/If I have to/ I can do anything/I am strong (Strong)/I am invincible (Invincible)… I am woman
Happy Mother’s Day!

Summer Boaters Beware! Save the Manatee-FREE Public Awareness Material Available
F
lorida is called the boating capital of the world, and with these hot and sun-filled days upon us, the boating season is in full swing. Save the Manatee Club cautions the boating community to use vigilance to avoid injuring manatees and other marine life, as the busy waterways provide important habitat for many species. Manatees are constantly on the move, foraging and mating, and boaters are urged to be on the look-out for these slow-moving gentle marine mammals. “Save the Manatee Club produces and distributes a variety of free public awareness materials,” explains Janice Nearing, Director of Public Relations. “Yellow “caution” waterproof banners with the message, “Please Slow, Manatees Below,” are available to Florida boater enthusiasts. The banners alert other boaters to the presence of manatees in the area and can be very helpful in protecting manatees from potential harm.” Also available are dock signs for Florida shoreline property owners, boating decals, and waterproof manatee protection tips cards. You can get the free public awareness materials by e-mailing the Club at education@savethemanatee.org or by calling toll free at 1-800-432-JOIN (5646).

The Fullei Fresh Marketplace Now Open
I
n an effort to educate Floridians on all health matters local grower and owner of Fullei Fresh Manny Wong, expanded its facility to include The Fullei Fresh Marketplace. As Miami’s own sprouts and wheatgrass grower for over 40 years, Wong shows Miamians that when it comes to your health, little sprouts have a big impact. Open on the third Saturday of every month, The Fullei Fresh Marketplace is a space where health talks, cooking classes, fitness classes, demonstrations, and more are going to be held. “Healthy living involves both a healthy mindset and lifestyle, in addition to nutrition,” explains Wong. “In an effort to better serve the community, not only is the event free, but they also have a spacious parking lot for free parking. The space is also available to rent when Marketplace is not open.” Fullei Fresh hydroponically grows a variety of sprouts and shoots which are distributed throughout Florida, Georgia and Texas. But while Fullei Fresh sells directly to distributors, The Fullei Fresh Marketplace is a location where customers can buy sprouts directly from the company, “and has the full product line available to them (not just what is in their local store).” Besides healthy food and drinks like wheat grass shots, you’ll find juicers, spout books, t-shirts and bags for purchase. Additionally you’ll discover doTERRA essential oils presented by Girl Prosperity, kid’s activities, raffles and so much more. Call 305-758-3880, ext. 100 (Olivia Wong), visit fulleifresh.com, or email Fullei@fulleifresh.com for more information.

F
uture Now Detox, a detoxification center located in Palm Beach, Florida, offers natural treatments for addiction. As an inpatient medically supervised 24/7 center, their staff specialize in providing holistic, personalized care in helping patients detox from drug and alcohol addiction. As stated on their website: “Too often, rehab centers ask people in recovery to white knuckle their way into sobriety through sheer willpower. But there’s another way. A small number of holistic rehab and detox centers now use nicotine adenine dinucleotide (NAD) infusions to restore addicts to health and sobriety. Sometimes called Brain Restoration (BR), this treatment is remarkably effective and supported by scientific research. NAD is a coenzyme present in every cell of the human body. It plays a key role in metabolic reactions. Without it, the body can’t function optimally. Research has shown that addicts tend to have low levels of NAD, and that the disease of addiction further depletes NAD. This suggests that addicts may use alcohol and drugs to compensate for cellular dysfunction. NAD infusions are delivered intravenously into the bloodstream. While it’s possible to get NAD supplements at some shops, these aren’t as effective and the dosage isn’t tailored to the individual’s needs. With NAD infusions, an addict gets exactly what they need. This restores the brain and cells to health. It can make detox and withdrawal easier and is clinically proven to reduce the risk of relapse.”
G
eneral dentist Dr. Leslie Haller and Tongue Tie South Florida have relocated from Lauderhill to Coral Gables, a more central location from which to better serve all of South Florida. Last month Dr. Haller attended a Laser Symposium in Orlando, learning from all the greats in tongue tie frenectomies and the laser dentistry world. With her new training and relocation to Coral Gables complete, she is now ready to take care of her patients’ one tooth and one frenectomy at a time. Dr. Haller is actively involved in research looking at a possible connection between tongue-ties and SIDS. In May, 2016 a paper written by Dr. Haller and Dr. Brown was published in the Journal of Rare Disorders: Upper-Lip Frenum as Predictive Marker for Risk of Unexpected and Unexplained Asphyxia in Infants. Near the airport, beautiful downtown Coral Gables is easy to reach from Broward without the need to go through downtown Miami: from 1-95 take FL 836 West and exit on 42nd Avenue, then left at Alhambra Circle (348 Alhambra Circle). The office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for all general dentistry and laser dentistry needs. There is on-street parking and limited free parking behind the office.

New Album, Prayers on The Wind, Is Out Now
P
rayers on the Wind is the new album by Soundings of the Planet Dean Evenson and Peter Ali. The lifting notes these two musical masters combine resemble a unique blend of nature, harmony spirit and prayer. Together they blend and overcome all boundaries . Award-winning sound healing pioneer, Dean Evenson, teams up with Native American flute virtuoso, Peter Ali, to create stunning duets harmoniously blending silver flute and wooden flutes of different tribes and cultures. Delicate natural sounds of eagles, song birds, and ocean waves enhance this compelling musical journey flowing through many worlds. In these flute collaborations, Peter Ali would choose one of his flutes and begin playing. Dean Evenson would then match the key and play along. Their improvised compositions became the soundtrack for these beautiful musical dialogs. The mood and feeling of each piece was determined by the nature of the wooden flute as well as the interactive creativity of the musicians themselves. Dean Evenson is one of the true visionaries of the Ambient/New Age musical genre. He is a prolific musician and composer, an entrepreneur, media pioneer and the co-founder of Billboard-charting independent music label, Soundings of the Planet. Peter Ali is an indigenous flute player who grew up in Southern California to a Moroccan father and Mexican mother. Check out the nature music video from Prayers on the Wind for their first single “Beyond Time” at youtu.be/X74UORui0qU. Soundings Of The Planet, PO Box 4472, Bellingham, WA 98227. New guidelines that change the criteria for healthy blood pressure mean that nearly half of U.S. adults are now considered to have high blood pressure. The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association have redefined the condition as being 130/80 instead of 140/90, a change considered by critics as overly beneficial to pharmaceutical companies. This criteria includes 80 percent of people over 65, triples the diagnosis for men under 45 and doubles it for women younger than 45. The revised guidelines encourage adopting lifestyle strategies in early stages of rising blood pressure like exercise, diet, weight loss and smoking cessation. Evidence-based alternative methods noted in a Canadian study include coenzyme Q10, dark chocolate, qigong, slow breathing, Transcendental Meditation and vitamin D. 12

In a survey of 171 midlife American women, more than 80 percent reported using complementary and alternative medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine researchers discovered. The most common choice was herbal teas, followed by women’s vitamins, flaxseed, glucosamine and soy supplements. Only 34 percent of the non-Hispanic white women and 14 percent of the Hispanic women discussed it with their doctors.

Young Women Outdo Male Peers in Oxygen Uptake Young women process oxygen about 30 percent faster and more efficiently than men when they begin exercising, according to a new study from Canada’s University of Waterloo. The ability to extract oxygen from the blood is an important fitness marker, which the researchers tested by having 18 young men and women exercise on treadmills. The women’s superior results indicate they are naturally less prone to muscle fatigue and poor performance. “The findings are contrary to the popular assumption that men’s bodies are more naturally athletic,” observes lead author Thomas Beltrame, Ph.D. Previous research had found that older men and male children tend to have faster oxygen uptake than women.

When an adult looks into the eyes of a baby, a synchronization of brain waves occurs that could indicate an intention to communicate, concludes a Cambridge University study of 36 infants. This coordinating supports the baby’s early learning and communication skills, according to the researchers. The effect, which researchers measured via electroencephalogram (EEG)-wired skullcaps, was strongest with eye-to-eye contact and weaker when the adult’s head was turned away. The more vocalizations—little sounds—the baby made, the greater their brainwaves synchronized with the adult.

Acetaminophen Linked to Delayed Language Skills Girls born to 754 Swedish mothers that used acetaminophen during pregnancy showed less ability in acquiring early language skills at 30 months of age, report Mount Sinai Health System study researchers. If the mothers took acetaminophen more than six times in early pregnancy, their daughters (but not their sons) were nearly six times more likely to have language delays than girls born to mothers that didn’t take the drug. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 65 percent of pregnant women in this country use acetaminophen, which is marketed for pain and fever relief in Tylenol and Excedrin, and included in many over-the-counter formulations such as NyQuil and Robitussin.

Seniors Eating Mediterranean Diet Retain Independence Seniors that ate a Mediterranean diet high in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts and legumes were able to live independently longer, had fewer falls and fractures, and were less frail, according to recent research. In a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society, University College London researchers analyzed the eating habits and health data of 5,789 participants in studies in France, Spain, Italy and China. “People that followed the Mediterranean diet the most were overall less than half as likely to become frail over a nearly four-year period compared with those that followed it the least,” says lead author Katy Walters, Ph.D. The researchers also noted that the plant-based diet may help older people maintain muscle strength, activity, weight and energy levels.

Yoga Soothes the Blues Taking a 90-minute hatha yoga class twice a week for eight weeks steadily lowered symptoms of depression in all 20 men and women with mild to moderate forms of clinical depression that participated in a recent University of California, San Francisco, study. Another 18 depressed adults attending an attention control class for the same period of time, afterwards had somewhat lower depression scores overall, but less than half the improvement, plus they showed greater mood fluctuation.

Relinquishing the Reward by Brian Clark
I
t is useful to accentuate the practical, simple and humble side of meditation, for it seems that spiritual discourse is about as full as it needs to be of lofty speech and symbolic obfuscation. The way of meditation is not to indulge in fantastical or conceptual thinking it is in fact not to believe in anything unless it is self-verified by our own experience. To harbor any ideas of what meditation should or should not be, any hopes or expectations of what it should bring, even exerting effort is from a certain perspective at odds with allowing meditation its necessary operational emptiness. Meditation is essentially paradoxical, in that when we surrender the will to meditate—when we surrender the meditator—meditation happens. Meditation is essentially ironic, in that whatever benefits we think meditation will bring, whatever et’s start by saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder! All That Glitters Recycling IQ
Take a Quiz to Help the Planet
As ambitious folks undertake spring cleaning, questions arise about what is and isn’t recyclable, as well as how to do the right thing on an ongoing basis. The world can benefit from our efforts: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that every ton of recycled paper saves the energy equivalent of 322 gallons of gasoline, while a ton of aluminum cans saves 21 barrels of oil. Putting the wrong items into a recycle bin demands extra time and effort at local facilities. We can test our knowledge by taking this short true or false quiz. Please note that local standards may vary, so check for specifics. 1. Both paper and plastic bags are recyclable. 2. All paper in the form of phone books, newspapers, magazines, junk mail, office paper and paperboard, is recyclable. 3. Cardboard pizza boxes can be recycled despite absorption of grease and food residue. 4. Aluminum, steel and tin-plated cans can all go in the recycling bin. 5. Some of these items are recyclable: Styrofoam food containers and cups, used paint cans, sewing needles, non-empty aerosol cans, garden hoses and clothing. 6. Recycling broken glass is the same as intact glass. 7. It’s easy to recycle a broken or outmoded cell phone or laptop computer. 8. It’s vital to recycle office and other paper. Answers: 1. False; generally, only paper bags are recyclable unless a grocer or big-box retailer has its own program for plastic bags. 2. True
Sparkly Microbeads Face Ban
Scientists have called for glitter to be prohibited due to the threat it poses to wildlife. The glistening, decorative, plastic microbead powder may seem harmless, but environmental researchers report it’s a dangerous pollutant, particularly in oceans. Trisia Farrelly, Ph.D., of New Zealand’s Massey University, notes, “Their diminutive size and sparkling appearance make them appealing to animals, which will eat them.” Seven U.S. states now restrict the use and sale of products with microbeads; California was the first in 2015. The British government will ban rinse-off microbeads—plastics of less than one millimeter in length—found in exfoliating scrubs, shower gels, toothpaste and even on greeting cards. Plastics are found in a third of all fish caught in Great Britain, according to a study by Richard Thompson, Ph.D., professor of marine biology at Plymouth University. He says of shower gel with glitter particles, “That stuff is going to escape down the plughole and potentially enter the environment.”
3. False 4. True, if free of harmful chemical residue. 5. False; generally, none are recyclable. Notable exceptions for foam are detailed at FoamFacts.com/recycling; shipping storefronts may accept foam packing peanuts. 6. False; put broken light bulbs and other shattered glass in the trash; bring all fluorescent bulbs to a local building supply store. 7. True; many consumer electronics retailers and manufacturers, states and charities offer options to recycle or donate devices. Visit RecyclingForCharities. com, Call2Recycle.org, Earth911.com or EcyclingCentral.com. 8. True; 30 percent of landfill trash generated annually is paper, outweighed only by plastic and food waste.

Meds in Urban Streams Drive Microbial Resistance
A new study published in the journal Ecosphere confirms that in urban streams, persistent pharmaceutical pollution can cause aquatic microbial communities to become resistant to drugs. Researchers evaluated the presence of pharmaceuticals, including painkillers, stimulants, antihistamines and antibiotics, in four streams in Baltimore, Maryland. Then they measured the microbial response to drug exposure. Selected study sites represented a gradient of development from suburban to urban. Emma Rosi, an aquatic ecologist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies and lead author on the study, explains, “Wastewater treatment facilities are not equipped to remove many pharmaceutical compounds. We were interested in how stream microorganisms, which perform key ecosystem services like removing nutrients and breaking down leaf litter, respond to pharmaceutical pollution. When we expose streams to pharmaceutical pollution, we are unwittingly altering their microbial communities, yet little is known about what this means for ecological function and water quality.”
The emerging technology of three-dimensional (3-D) printing can benefit the world in many ways. Re:Purpose for Good, in Australia, creates robotically 3-D printed prosthetic devices from recycled plastic and e-waste. It’s difficult to customize prosthetics, so more invasive surgery is often needed to make standard sizes fit the patient. Other companies produce 3-D printed prosthetic hands and arms, but Re:Purpose for Good customizes both hands and feet at a much lower cost. The company’s robotics and prosthetics engineer Gerardo Montoya, who had been working on 3-D printing prosthetics for children in Mexico, merged the idea with a desire to do something about the 8 million tons of plastic entering the oceans. Along with plastic waste, they also use e-waste such as discarded smartphones that have all the circuitry and microprocessors needed for advanced features. The company even plans to teach their prosthetic-making process to children as part of their science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) curriculum, so they can learn 3-D printing skills. They’re making it open source so more people can get involved without patent restrictions.

The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit aims not only to protect rhinoceroses in South Africa by patrolling the Balule Nature Reserve, in Greater Kruger National Park, but to also be a role model in their communities. It’s the first majority-female, antipoaching unit in the country. Founded in 2013 by Transfrontier Africa NPC to protect the Olifants West Region of Balule, the Black Mambas were invited within a year to expand into other regions, and now protect all boundaries of the reserve. These 32 young women and two men want their communities to understand that the benefits are greater through rhino conservation rather than poaching, as they address the local social and moral decay that results from poaching. Their concern is also for their children’s sake because the sham economy has corrupted morals and brought narcotics into their communities. To make a donation, visit BlackMambas.org. 16

Obsolete Packaging Grocer Shuns Plastic Trays
The British supermarket chain Iceland is planning to eliminate or drastically reduce plastic packaging for more than 1,000 of its house-label products by the end of 2023, switching to paper-based trays instead. Nigel Broadhurst, joint managing director of Iceland, explains that the typical ready meal was packaged in a particularly bad way. “It is currently in a black plastic tray. That black plastic is the worst possible option in terms of toxins going into the ground and the ability to recycle that product.” He also notes that instead of the usual plastic bag, grocers could put netting around a bunch of apples the same as with oranges. Iceland’s research found that 80 percent of shoppers would endorse a supermarket’s move to go plastic-free.
Love Rocks
Inspiring Messages that Surprise
Artistically decorated rocks featuring inspirational messages are turning up in Mobile, Alabama, and along the Gulf of Mexico shoreline as part of The Kindness Rocks Project (TheKindnessRocksProject. com). Anyone can paint rocks and “plant” them for someone else to discover. Likewise, everyone is invited to hunt for kindness rocks. Those that find a rock are free to take it, plant it somewhere else or leave it for someone else to find. The grassroots movement was created to spread inspiration and motivation for unsuspecting recipients through the random placement of the rocks in public spaces. The goal is to encourage others to find creative ways to reach out and brighten someone else’s day unexpectedly, whether it’s through kindness rocks, love notes or random acts of generosity.

Temporary Protection
Locals Prevail Against Bristol Bay Mine
Alaskan mining critics cheered the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency decision to maintain an existing policy not to permit the Northern Dynasty Minerals’ Pebble copper and gold mine in Bristol Bay. They maintain that the project’s toxic byproducts would threaten fisheries and other natural resources. Alannah Hurley, with United Tribes of Bristol Bay, a group opposing the mine, has said that members of the tribes she represents are willing to lie down in front of bulldozers to protect the waters. She notes, “Ideally, we would like these [protections] finalized, and the battle to protect Bristol Bay from the Pebble Mine and mines like Pebble is far from over. But the fact that these protections remain in place and can be used within the process is a very positive step in the effort to protect the Bristol Bay watershed for generations to come.”

Natural Approaches Resolve Major Illnesses by Linda Sechrist
A
lthough natural health enthusiasts may recognize alternative healing modalities as a preferred approach to treatment, in the face of major health issues, even they tend to join the crowd that’s turning first to conventional medicine. Thus, many gentler modalities described in The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, co-authored by doctors of naturopathy Michael T. Murray and Joseph Pizzorno, remain largely untapped resources. Ignored because they are unsupported by traditional science-based medicine, holistic measures such as acupuncture, energy medicine, essential oils, herbs, detoxification, health-promoting diets, homeopathy, prayer and meditation, supplementation, yoga, massage and naturopathy are sacrificed in favor of often painful medical procedures and prescription drugs which can’t claim to permanently cure anything and can have many harmful side effects.
for minor health issues such as indigestion, headache or insomnia often turns to conventional methods after receiving a serious diagnosis such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer because they are scared,” observes holistic physician Dr. Wendy Warner, medical director of Medicine in Balance, in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. The co-author of Boosting Your Immunity for Dummies suggests that relatively few people turn to natural solutions for both preventive and therapeutic measures because they’re unaware they exist. Integrative oncologists and endocrinologists that are aware of the benefits of natural complementary methods are scarce. Relatively few conventional doctors are educated in functional medicine. “Yet complementary modalities such as acupuncture, massage and some essential oils can support the immune system and help an individual deal with stress experienced from coping with their illness,” says Warner.

cine practitioner, speaks from experience regarding clients that consult him for lifethreatening diagnoses. “When I see them, they’re desperate and have exhausted all conventional methods. I’m their lastditch effort,” remarks Wergin. The most frequent reason he hears is, “My family, friends and doctor told me not to waste my money on charlatans.” “People find it challenging to put faith in natural methods and are nervous about going against a doctor’s advice until they feel or see positive results; even these may not provide sufficient motivation to continue with alternative treatments,” he says. “I believe this is the result of the influence of pharmaceutical ads promising results, the medical community’s belief in proof solely through clinical trials, websites like Quackwatch.com and well-meaning friends insisting that the conventional route is the only way to go. It’s sad to see the gravity of these influences pulling clients back into solely believing in the Western model of medicine,” says Wergin. Ann Lee, a doctor of naturopathy, acupuncturist and founder of the Health for Life Clinic, Inc., in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, notes, “This mindset continues to get reinforced by insurance companies that do not cover alternatives. Paying out of pocket for medical expenses also influences a patient’s choices.” Kelly Noonan-Gores and Adam Schomer, director and producer, respectively, of the documentary film HEAL, suggest that unconscious conditioning plays the biggest role in an individual’s choices. “We are deeply conditioned to view medical specialists and prestigious medical institutions as the ones with all the answers. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t,” says Noonan-Gores, who intends to have her film awaken viewers to the possibilities of alternative paths of healing. As just one other example noted in the film, thousands have used the Emotional
Freedom Technique (EFT), tapping on their body to help release the trauma and stress often associated with illness.
Resistance to Change
“The conventional medical community wants to maintain the model in which they have heavily invested centuries of time, energy and money. Patients that investigate integrative and complementary medicine may resist hearing that in order to get well, they might need to change their worldview and lifestyle, take a leave of absence from their job, develop a spiritual practice, exercise or maybe even leave a toxic relationship,” says Schomer. “Conventional medicine says take this pill and keep living your life the same way,” says Schomer. “We are not demonizing doctors, pharmaceuticals or the medical system. We simply believe that individuals are more empowered to heal when they take control of their health.” Eva Lee, a resident of Los Angeles featured in the documentary, suffers from a rare and unpredictable form of blistering skin inflammation. “I’ve tested negative for faulty genes and all sorts of rare viruses and bacteria, which helped point me towards holistic methods. So far, following the directives of Dr. Mark Emerson, a chiropractor specializing in nutrition, in Maui, Hawaii, who I met while filming, has helped my body become healthier and deal with inflammation levels that rapidly reduced as soon as I detoxed and eliminated meat and dairy from my diet,” says Lee. Still, it’s hard for her to accept that her condition could be due to the type of stress and suppressed emotions that Anthony William explores in his book Medical Medium: Secrets Behind Chronic and Mystery Illness and How to Finally Heal. “Before, I wasn’t familiar with EFT, which I continue to use and benefit from. However, despite
everything I’ve learned, I can’t give up on all Western medicine, put my faith in alternatives and let my intuition and faith guide me to healing. It’s easier to be skeptical than to have faith,” Lee says.
Quiet Role Models
Sheila Tucker, a resident of Navarre, Florida, has been a registered nurse for 20 years, practicing in hospital settings such as critical care, emergency and administration. “I know and understand doctors, surgeries and pharmaceutical treatments and hospitals,” says Tucker, who recalls that throughout her life she was taught to believe in a system that suddenly stopped working for her. “In 2014, I was dying from a rare autoimmune condition, requiring fulltime care, and planning my funeral. Doctors had tried everything, yet my health continued to decline. When I saw a friend’s Facebook posts about her use of essential oils, I was curious, but reluctant to reach out, and didn’t want anyone to know that I called her for advice,” recalls Tucker. “Shortly after my friend arrived with her oils, my husband came home with our daughter, who had strep throat and a fever. She made us promise to use selected oils through the night and prayed with us.” Tucker attributes the miracle of her daughter’s turnaround the next morning to shifting her paradigm and opening her up to believing in the healing power of essential oils. Thanks to her friend and role model, Tucker learned how to use therapeuticgrade oils, supplements and a healthy diet to cleanse her body of the heavy toxic load accumulated from several years of expensive drug treatments. Today, she is a healthy and enthusiastic advocate, and her personal results opened the eyes of her physician to the point where she also shifted her own philosophy of healing. Tucker now offers educational classes in her office and online through her website FloridaOilsRN.com that reaches hundreds of individuals worldwide. She
advises, “Reach out to people that you see are having positive results with a different healing system than yours. Ask them to show, help and teach you. I’ve seen many people restored to health by using methods that science is only beginning to understand.”
It’s a Marathon
“Outside of any dominant paradigm, it’s easier to cast suspicion than to make curious inquiry and, over time, working within a dominant worldview creates polarity, the antithesis of ‘wholism’. An inclusive approach integrates all medical and complementary approaches, as well as interaction with the natural world,” says Patrick Hanaway, a family physician and founder of Family to Family Medicine, in Asheville, North Carolina. Hanaway, the former director of medical education for the Institute for Functional Medicine and the first medical director at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, explains, “Doctors have a rigorous job filled with responsibility. Change is difficult and investigating vastly different ways of practicing medicine requires a degree of curiosity and openness. I am heartened by thought leaders and heads of top medical schools who are presently opening up to functional medicine, natural medicine and complementary approaches.” “The paradigm shift we are ushering in has been 50 years in the making,” assesses Hanaway. “Some medical professionals are immersed in a polar view of right and wrong, offering personal attacks and disparaging comments to maintain control of the dialogue. This is not appreciated by patients who look to the doctor as a teacher—the Latin docere means to teach. “The movement to change medicine and the cultural paradigm of healing is a marathon, not a sprint, and those of us involved are prepared to stay the course.” Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings. New Standard of Care
PERSONALIZED HEALTH CARE
Functional Medicine Leads the Way by Linda Sechrist
Historical Overview During the last 25 years, a less drug-based grassroots model for dealing with chronic illnesses in the U.S. has emerged. First labeled holistic, the movement gained momentum as alternative approaches morphed into being considered complementary to conventional medicine, war-
ranting studies by the National Institutes of Health. Responding to public interest, an integrative model of care that focuses on the whole person has taken root in medical institutions such as the Cleveland Clinic, in Ohio. The latest evolution to a systemsoriented, patient-focused clinical model

One of the best-prepared, traditionally trained medical professionals in explaining this approach is Jeffrey S. Bland, Ph.D., recognized as the father of functional medicine, and author of The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer and Happier Life. He co-founded, with his wife, Susan, the Institute for Functional Medicine, in Washington, which provides a system geared to understanding the complexity of chronic illness and design individualized programs for more effective healing. “Medical science didn’t have the advanced technology 25 years ago to perform the research that now helps us better understand the complexity of chronic illness, as well as our present ecological view of the body. Today we’re examining how all the networks of our biology intersect in a dynamic process that creates health when in balance or disease when out of balance,” attests Bland, whose career has focused on searching for a unifying principle behind all healing that can be used to discern the best possible therapy for specific individuals. Incorporating what he learned from Linus Pauling, Ph.D., two-time Nobel Prize laureate, and Lee Hood, M.D., Ph.D., as well as systems biology and practicing lifestyle medicine, Bland founded the nonprofit Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute (PLMInstitute.org) in 2012. Seeking to transform the entire medical approach to chronic illness, the Seattle-based organization is a virtual and onsite hub for health professionals, researchers, educators and the public to share ideas and converse about how personalized functional medicine can be delivered to everyone as an improved standard of care.
Role of Genetics The National Human Genome Research Institute, in Bethesda, Maryland, maintains
that an evolved approach to medicine starts with using an individual’s genetic profile to determine the best path to preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases. By 2003, scientists had delivered the first essentially complete sequence and map of all the genes in the human body. Three decades ago, the medical fraternity had few reliable explanations for the origins of chronic health issues. Today, accepted factors include predispositions for a specific disease related to an individual’s genome, along with contemporary epigenetic influences such as nutrition, environment and lifestyle. None of these elements, however, necessarily define our destiny. “This genomic personalized medicine approach is creating friends among all healing arts practitioners because it facilitates our using information to design a less-toxic environment, lifestyle, diet and treatment to meet an individual’s specific needs and particular circumstances that led to a disease,” says Bland. “Diseases are only names assigned to a collection of symptoms,” says Bland. “They don’t indicate how the individual became afflicted. If 10 patients with Type 2 diabetes each had epigenetic variations that triggered getting the condition, it would be unwise to treat them all the same; it’s far better to treat those factors that specifically led to the disease.” Addressing the concern that genetic test results might be used to deny someone health insurance, Bland notes, “This is a significant misunderstanding about genetic testing. Our genes don’t tell us how we are going to die. They tell us how we should live. Understanding how our genes can help us live to 100 is a model of enlightenment. Those that practice this systems biology approach are counting on functional personalized medicine becoming the updated standard of care.” Physicians often offer genetic testing services. At-home DNA testing can be done using a saliva collection kit mailed to a laboratory, offering both ancestry and health information that must be interpreted by an informed professional. MENOPAUSE Exercising Reduces Symptoms
T
by Marlaina Donato
ransitioning through menopause and the years of perimenopausal hormone fluctuation leading up to the finale can be physically and emotionally challenging for many women. Consistently following a healthy diet and positive lifestyle are important, and health researchers, doctors and midlife women can attest to the multidimensional benefits of exercise. Perks may include reduction of menopausal discomfort, better brain function, stronger bones and reversal of estrogen dominance syndrome that can set the stage for fibroids, cystic breasts, cancer, migraines and weight gain.
Get Moving
Studies of 3,500 women in South and Central America have shown that a more active life reduces hot flashes and night sweats. The results, published in Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society, reveal that sedentary individuals often experience increased intensity of related symptoms like insomnia and irritability. Aerobic exercise such as regular walking, hiking, swimming or biking might also help the brain produce neurochemicals that are compromised when estrogen levels drop. Sue Markovitch, author and owner of Clear Rock Fitness, in Columbus, Ohio, recommends aerobic exercise. “I believe our bodies were made to move. One of the amazing gifts of fitness is it’s truly never too late. When we incorporate daily movement in our lives, all the other systems in the body will work more according to plan. Simply taking a daily walk helps balance brain chemistry,” says Markovitch, who specializes in improving fitness levels for women over 40. “Walking is fitness magic, whether it’s 22

on a treadmill, outside or in the pool. Get your heart rate into an aerobic zone, preferably for 30 to 45 minutes. I’ve heard testimony after testimony of improved sleep, less back or joint pain and better mood.” She also suggests adding a few weekly sessions of resistance training to daily walks. Most health professionals agree that balance is the key. Jeanne D. Andrus, a menopause expert and author of I Just Want to Be ME Again, in Covington, Louisiana, recommends cardio, resistance training and exercise that increases flexibility and core strength. “For a beginner, this may include two to four days of walking, one to three days of strength training and one to three days of yoga or Pilates, with the goal being three and a half hours of activity per week.” Of course, all of these need to be at appropriate levels for the woman’s condition and goals,” advises Andrus. According to studies led by Helen Jones, Ph.D., from the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, UK, three, 30-to-45-minute aerobic sessions a week reduced hot flashes and yielded the most significant results.
Go Easy
While some conventional approaches suggest vigorous exercise, many holistic professionals caution against extremes. “It’s important to individualize, and in my ongoing research it’s clear that the high-intensity strength and sculpting approach so often promoted and perceived as necessary to maintain shape, weight and health is a myth,” says Dr. Eden Fromberg, an obstetrician, gynecologist and founder of Holistic Gynecology New York, in Manhattan.
• Gynecology/ First Time Program • Bio - Identical Hormones • Vaginal Laser Therapy • Sexual Health/ PRP O- Shot® • Menopause • Natural Thyroid Program • IV Nutrient Infusion Therapy • Natural PRP Facial Rejuvenation/Hair Loss Treatments
Instead, Fromberg recommends an integrated approach to exercise that supports connective tissue and joints. While some forms of exercise including yoga are perceived as gentler than others, she warns against an all-or-nothing strategy, noting, “Intense, deep stretching and joint-straining may cause injury more easily during hormonal transition.” Andrus concurs, “If high cortisol levels are involved and accompanied by insomnia, stress placed on the body by rigorous exercise will increase these levels and actually lower available energy.” She also advises adopting a non-aggressive approach for osteoporosis. “Weight-bearing exercise is a must, but if bone loss is already present, start much more gradually to ensure that bones are protected.”
Lighten Up
Exercise can be more enjoyable than doing chores. Recreational activities such as dancing, biking or hopping on the swings at the playground are fun ways to do something good for both body and spirit. Menopause can be a time for personal expansion and an invitation for self-care that might have been neglected or postponed. Fromberg believes we can all revitalize our resources at any stage of life, and the years surrounding menopause call for us to tune into ourselves even more. “What seems like a disruption is an opportunity to listen deeply and reimagine and reorganize one’s life on physical, emotional and spiritual levels.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, author and multimedia artist. hile not essential to every dish or meal, condiments provide extra flavoring, final flourishes and added enjoyment to any dish. Such meal accompaniments range from vinegars to spreads and sauces, finishing spice mixtures and natural salts. America’s previous king of condiments was ketchup. Today, according to a 2017 poll from TheDailyMeal.com, it stands behind mayonnaise and mustard with soy and hot sauce rounding out the top five (generic product ranking at Tinyurl.com/Top20Condiments). We often take familiar condiments for granted, yet a look at their ingredients can be startling. Many prominently include processed corn syrup and other sugars, sodium, gluten, monosodium glutamate (MSG), artificial flavors and unpronounceable preservatives, according to Dana Angelo White, a registered dietitian in Fairfield, Connecticut. Homemade versions of condiments provide a happy alternative. They not
only taste great, but can be good for us. “Certain condiments add more to your meals than flavor—some actually improve your health,” says White. The potassium in homemade mustard is good for the digestive system through stimulating the flow of saliva, suggests a study in the Indian Journal of Medical Research. Homemade ketchup made with small cooked tomatoes is rich in lycopene, a nutrient that protects heart health, according to research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. White’s fresh-made “THE Green Sauce,” full of vitamin-rich avocado and cilantro, is replete with antioxidants (Tinyurl.com/TheGreenSauceRecipe).
Better Basics Ketchup
Heather McClees, a plant-based nutritionist in South Carolina who blogs at One Green Planet, once loved commercial ketchup; then she read the labels. “Most ketchup is made of tomato concentrates, sugars, including high-fructose corn syrup, cane

sugar, agave nectar, coconut nectar/syrup, brown rice syrup, cane juice and cane crystals, vinegar, “spices” that is likely code for MSG, water and refined salt. All of this makes ketchup addicting,” she says. “While you could pay for pricey organic ketchup and condiments that come without added sugars, you can save money by spending five minutes in the kitchen to make your own.” Find a recipe at Tinyurl.com/HealthyKetchupRecipe.
Mustard
Serious Eats food writer Joshua Bousel uses only six ingredients to make a deliciously easy Grainy Mustard: yellow and brown mustard seeds, dry white wine, white wine vinegar, kosher salt and an optional pinch of brown sugar. Learn how at Tinyurl.com/ WholeGrainDijonRecipe.
Mayonnaise and Ranch Dressing
Eschewing eggs, J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, of San Mateo, California, uses aquafaba, the starchy liquid in a can of chickpeas, for a plant-based twist on emulsified mayonnaise. Find it at Tinyurl.com/AquafabaMayoRecipe. In her Mebane, North Carolina, kitchen, Kim Campbell, author of The PlantPure Kitchen, makes a plant-based ranch dressing with tofu for body and nutritional yeast, herbs and lemon juice to achieve the characteristic flavor. More Exotic Condiments Pomegranate Molasses
Sweet and tart pomegranate molasses can be used like vinegar in salad dressings, as a marinade ingredient or as syrup over pancakes and waffles. Angela Buchanan, aka Angela Cooks, a professor at the University of Colorado, in Boulder, who blogs at SeasonalAnd Savory.com, follows the Whole30 program, which bars sugar. Because she also likes Middle-Eastern food, Buchanan experimented and created her recipe for Pomegranate Molasses without added sugar (Tinyurl.com/PomegranateMolassesRecipe).
Superfood Popcorn Seasoning
Green popcorn is fun. With a spirulina powder, garlic powder, sea salt and cayenne pepper spice mix, even a movie snack can be healthy. “Spirulina is one of the most potent of all superfoods. Available in a powder form, it’s a blue-green algae that provides protein, B vitamins and iron. It’s used as a natural energizer, digestive aid and detoxifier,” says Tara Milhern, a holistic health coach in New York City. She also likes it sprinkled on baked potatoes or vegetables as a finishing flavor. See Tinyurl.com/HealthyPopcornSeasoning. Without preservatives, homemade healthy condiments don’t last as long as commercial versions. McClees advises, “I store mine in a glass mason jar for one week in the fridge. I choose a half-pint-size jar, since the less empty space there is at the top of the jar, the longer it keeps.” Judith Fertig writes cookbooks plus foodie fiction from Overland Park, KS (JudithFertig.com).

“Ranch dressing can be dairy-free and made with tofu, making it plant-based and oil-free,” says Kim Campbell. Yields: about 2 cups 2 lb tofu, about 2 (14-oz) packages 1½ Tbsp fresh parsley, chopped ¾ cup onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic 3 Tbsp distilled white vinegar 2 Tbsp agave syrup 1 Tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp nutritional yeast 1 tsp dry mustard ¼ tsp paprika ½ tsp celery seeds 1 Tbsp dried chives ¾ cup filtered water

Yields: 1 cup 32 oz unsweetened organic pomegranate juice Fill a saucepan with the juice and bring it to a low boil. Reduce the heat so the liquid will stay at a low boil, and let the juice cook down to a scant cup of thick, syrupy liquid. This takes about an hour; note that it will thicken more once it is cooled.
Transfer the pomegranate molasses to a glass jar to store in the refrigerator where it will keep well for a few months.

Eco-Upgrades for America’s Landmarks Monuments and Parks Adopt Sustainable Practices by Avery Mack
M
ore U.S. landmarks are now highlighting eco-friendly practices, demonstrating that history can be preserved while incorporating sustainability.
Space Needle, Seattle Built in 1962, the Space Needle is undergoing a $100 million makeover. The observation deck will soon feature improved views through glass instead of cage-like barriers. Restaurant patrons will enjoy a first-of-its-kind rotating glass floor. Other eco-updates and upgrades include improved accessibility, internal systems, materials, elevators, paint, and seismic protection along its legs. Because the flame at the needle’s top consumed enough gas to heat 125 homes, it was replaced in 2000 with a flagpole mast, a beacon for aviators. When the rehab is completed in June, the structure will qualify for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification. 28

Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Alcatraz Island, California A pioneer in hybrid ferries, Alcatraz Cruises combines solar, wind and diesel power to transport visitors. Captured rain freshens park gardens and salt water flushes toilets. In 2013, solar energy produced what would have otherwise necessitated 31,900 gallons of fossil fuel and 325 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
Iolani Palace, Honolulu Updated lighting units with a life expectancy of 25 years enhance the Iolani Palace facade and provide a 77 percent energy savings, partly through an “instant on” feature instead of power-up lights.
Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona New buildings are LEED certified and

Using both passive and active solar energy, ground-source heat pumps, vegetated roofs and sustainable building materials, Walking Mountains is the first science center in Colorado to achieve LEED Platinum Certification, exceeding requirements. Collectively, three of its buildings use half the energy of an average school building. Straw bale construction in some building walls provides sounddeadening insulation suited to a dry climate.
Gateway Arch National Park, St. Louis St. Louis’ CityArchRiver initiative raised a mile-long waterfront by 30 inches to reduce flood days by 67 percent without causing flooding downstream. “Spent grain donated by the neighboring AnheuserBusch Brewery fertilizes our 4,200 trees,” says Eric Moraczewski, executive director of the Gateway Arch National Park Foundation. In another innovation, “To aerate the soil without damaging historic relics, radishes were planted throughout the park, allowing rainwater to seep deeper,” he explains. “As radishes decay, nutrients are added to the soil.”
Liberty Bell, Philadelphia, and Ground Zero Museum, New York City “The area housing the Liberty Bell is limited. We installed our ActivePure technology that reduces 99 percent of surface microorganisms and 90 percent of airborne microorganisms,” says Kevin Hickey, president of Aerus, LLC, in Dallas. “It keeps germs from spreading in crowd-
ed situations.” ActivePure is also in place at the Ground Zero Museum. “The nature of the artifacts often caused itchy eyes and coughs,” Hickey recalls. “We donated freestanding units and saw improved air quality the next day.”
Empire State Building, New York City The iconic historic structure is the tallest LEED-certified building in the U.S. It’s also the most photographed building in the world, according to Cornell University researchers in Ithaca, New York. All 6,514 windows were refurbished to be four times more energy efficient than before, reusing 96 percent of the original glass and frames.
Statue of Liberty, New York City Cooking oils are repurposed as bio-diesel fuel here, annually diverting an average of 10 tons of waste from landfills. More than 6,000 pounds of coffee grounds from serving visitors and staff are composted. Lady Liberty has been 100 percent carbon neutral for 12 years.
South Carolina Aquarium, Charleston Since 2001, the Aquarium has recycled everything from cardboard and paper to wine corks and ink cartridges. Charleston Harbor water fills the saltwater fish tanks, and landscaping using less-thirsty native plants reduces freshwater use. While enjoying visits to America’s landmarks, it’s gratifying to realize so many are adopting eco-friendly measures. Connect with the freelance writer via AveryMack@mindspring.com.

Three Questions to Ponder Before Sleeping by Krista O’Reilly Davi-Digui
A
sking ourself three purposeful questions before retiring each night can help us rest content knowing that although we may not have lived our day perfectly, we did live it well.
1
What are three things I am grateful for?
It’s possible to live with eyes and heart wide open to the amazing beauty of each day, to receive it as a gift, rather than a guarantee. By looking, we can find gifts even amid uncertainty, struggle, pain or loss. In those times when we find ourselves fighting for gratitude, know that the grace found in thankfulness for even tiny blessings sustains us and builds resilience to walk through the storm and emerge intact. Reading One Thousand Gifts, by Ann Voskamp, or A Simple Act of Gratitude, by John Kralik, may help inspire us to get started. With practice, expressing gratitude will come easily, like breathing or laughing with children.
2
What are two things I did well today?
Speaking words of life about ourselves, noticing what we do well and where we shine, may meet internal resistance. It seems second nature, especially for women, to see our own struggles or shortcomings, but not our beauty or all the ways we show up to serve others and use our strengths.
Deepening the roots of self-awareness and self-compassion that permit us to accept that we are good enough enables us to step out in calm confidence.
3
What is one thing I would do differently?
Some nights we may find that given the chance, we wouldn’t have done one thing differently that day. More often we can identify something: a word spoken in impatience, spending too much time on the phone, being distracted from what’s important to us, procrastinating out of fear, or even forgetting to properly nourish ourselves. Instead of criticizing, the goal is to notice how we could better live fully aligned to our bigger goals and established values. Moment by moment, we can choose a growth mindset. We can learn to be as gentle with ourselves, as compassionate and forgiving, as we are with our children or spouse. We become aware that we get to choose who and how we want to be and that tomorrow is a new gift, a brand-new opportunity to more fully be our best self. Asking and answering these three purposeful questions may take five to 20 minutes. If we’re tempted to rush through it, remember that the resulting clarity and peace is worth the time invested. children are often mirrors of the surrounding moods and attitudes, so our example is paramount. “Children absorb our feelings and emotions,” says Melanie Hogin, a social worker who counsels foster families in greater Nashville.“‘Transference’ is its textbook term. Yet as she and her husband, Dean, raised their three children decades ago, timeless guiding principles emerged. “We were like other parents—learning and growing along with our children,” says Evenson, a certified professional life coach, musician and co-founder of the instrumental recording label Soundings of

Be Consistent. Evenson maintains, “Mom and Dad or the primary parental figures should try to establish a unified, mutually supportive program.” “Consistency is one of the cornerstones of effective parenting,” says Dana Cooley-Keith, with 20 years of experience working with families in crisis in Northwest Georgia. “Even if it’s hard, it’s particularly important for divorced parents to be consistent and on the same page. Otherwise, it creates stress for the entire family, adding more confusion to a child’s life when the noncustodial parent allows something the custodial parent doesn’t.” Be positive, honest, flexible, reasonable and understanding. “It
is key to explain things to children and to listen to them,” says Evenson’s daughter, Cristen Olsen, of Seattle, who raised her daughter using her family’s guiding principles, and now uses them as a nanny. “It helps them learn how to process situations and find their own resolutions to difficult problems.” Olsen says she becomes a mediator
when the siblings she cares for don’t agree. “We solve the problem together by hearing all sides, talking through the issues and reaching for understanding. Many times, the kids come up with their own solutions.”
Provide meaningful boundaries and restrictions. Kids typically push
to find their limits. “Establish limits and boundaries when children are young,” says Cooley-Keith. “They will be more accepting of rules if you establish them earlier, rather than later. Most often, boundaries provide security for kids.”
Accept their point of view. Evenson always encouraged her children to voice their opinions. “This is a great point,” says Hogin. “For children to learn to have opinions and speak out, we must value what they say. We don’t have to agree with everything they say, but should listen and encourage them to find their voice and use their words.” Trust children. “Believe in them,” affirms
Evenson. “Be on their side. Let them feel your support and love.”
ances love for our own children with love for all children and respect for all life.
Don’t nag. “We all want children to develop their own sense of responsibility,” Olsen says. “I find making strong eye contact reinforces my words, so I don’t have to nag or repeat myself often.”
Be patient with yourself. “No one is perfect,” Evenson remarks. “Just do your best. Guide, console and discipline while keeping a sense of humor.”
Be available, rather than putting kids on the spot in public. “If you

correct or redirect a child in front of others, they will probably be focused on being embarrassed and fail to understand the lesson or reasoning a parent is trying to project,” says Hogin. “Taking a step back and working out an issue one-on-one is usually more appropriate and effective.”
Maintain good habits. Evenson emphasizes the character strength that comes from observing and practicing good habits and healthy lifestyles that avoids gossip and incorporates creative exploration of life. This includes “Doing everything in love,” she notes. Such all-encompassing love bal-

the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America measured the purring sound of domestic cat purrs, they discovered these resonate at 25 and 50 Hertz (Hz), the two low frequencies that best promote bone growth and fracture healing. Purrs also have a strong harmonic near 100 Hz, a level some orthopedic doctors and physical therapists use for ultrasound therapy. A child under a year old living with a cat is only half as likely to develop allergies to pets, ragweed, grass and dust mites, much as inoculations guard against disease and boost immune systems. The study, published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy, followed children from infancy to age 18. French researchers discovered autistic children age 5 and older that had a cat were more willing to share, offer comfort to others and show empathy. Sharing cat responsibilities tightened family bonds.
Cats like routine, especially for meals, making them good pets for Alzheimer’s patients that may lose track of time. Many people like the added warmth of a nearby sleeping cat at night. Fifteen minutes of exercise, followed by a snack, will put kitty on the owner’s sleep schedule.
Cats are Low-Maintenance Overall, cats are self-sufficient animals, requiring only love, food and a spotless litter box. Self-cleaning, most cats don’t require regular trips to the groomer for haircuts and a bath. Scratching posts keep nails short. A snack, playtime or welcoming puddle of sunshine persuades kitty that it’s naptime. “In rescue, we say dogs are toddlers and cats are teenagers. Cats live without constant
oversight,” says jme Thomas, co-founder of Motley Zoo Animal Rescue, in Redmond, Washington. “They’re good pets for busy people. Adopt two at the same time so they bond and aren’t lonely.”
Cats are Eco-Friendly A New Zealand study reports that cats have a lower carbon footprint than dogs, comparing dogs to a Hummer and cats to a Volkswagen Golf. Dogs eat more beef, incurring red meat’s huge footprint. “Because cats eat less than most dogs overall, it saves money, too,” says Gilbreath. Everyone needs someone to care for and love. With about 77 million cats living in U.S. households and more in shelters or rescues, there’s plenty of people- and planetfriendly love to be found. or more than four decades, Donna Eden has been teaching people to direct their energies for health and happiness, developing a system that has come to be known as “Eden Energy Medicine” (EEM). EEM is a simple practice that works with energy as a vital, living, moving force at the foundation of well-being. Since childhood, Donna has been able to clairvoyantly “see” the flow of energy in the body and has helped hundreds of thousands of people live more vitally by activating this natural healing ability, restoring energies that have become weak, disturbed, or out of balance. EEM addresses physical illness, emotional and mental disorders, and promotes high-level wellness, peak performance, and joyful living. Some 1,400 practitioners are certified in EEM, teaching classes and providing healing services around the world, many in mainstream health settings. Donna’s 2008 book, Energy Medicine, is the classic in its field, available in 19 languages and the textbook in hundreds of healing classes.

DE: I had a series of health challenges as a child, including contracting tuberculous when I was three and multiple sclerosis in my teens. The MS grew worse until my organs were breaking down. I had a heart attack when I was 27 and was told by my late 20s by several doctors that there was nothing more they could do to keep the illness from progressing, so I needed to get my affairs in order. But I had two daughters by then and I was determined not to leave them. I had the good fortune of being able to figure out how to work with the energies in my body to turn my M.S. around. It took a few years of experimentation and dogged determination, but in the process, I learned a great tell about how

to work with the body as an energy system. I then became impassioned to bring what I had learned to others suffering with difficult health challenges. That is how my work began.
NA: What is the difference between EEM and other energy healing modalities like reiki?
DE:While it had never occurred to me to use it in a healing context until my own do-or-die health crisis, I have always had the ability to see the energies that surround and move through the body. My mother had that ability, and it seemed quite normal and natural to me. It was only after I was working with other people in a healing context that I began to study other healing systems and I learned that the energies that move up and down the body were called “meridians” by ancient Chinese physicians. The circles of energies that spiral over various parts of the body were called “chakras” in age-old Vedic texts. The energies that surround the body are referred to in various systems, including in Christian

NA: What do you see as the future of energy medicine and natural healing?
DE: I see energy medicine and conventional medicine working hand-in-hand one day, as equal partners.

DE: I had the great honor of having Christiane Northrup, M.D. write the foreword to my second book, Energy Medicine for Women. In that foreword, I think she summed up the answer to that question as well as I’ve ever seen it. She said “In the medicine of the future, as I envision it, working with the patient’s energy field will be the first intervention. Surgery will be a last resort. Drugs will be a last resort. They will still have their place, but shifting the energy patterns that caused the disease will be the first line of treatment. And before that, teaching people how to keep their energies in healthy patterns will be as much a part of physical hygiene as flossing or exercise.”

writings, as the “aura.” I realized that I was working primarily with nine major energy systems and each had been recognized by one healing or spiritual system or another. Working with an understanding of each of these systems gives a health care practitioner a great advantage in facilitating the healing process, and that is what we teach our practitioners. Another feature of my approach is that I had to figure out a way that people who can’t “see” energy can still work with it effectively. For this, I borrowed muscle-based energy testing from Applied Kinesiology and Touch for Health, and this has become central in how our practitioners assess the body’s energy systems and determine where to work. I think these are the primary distinctions of my approach.

s humans, we are still able to find ways to escape harmful noise pollution, such as a sonic boom or fire drill. We can find refuge in a quiet room, joyous music or parts of nature. Unlike our eyes, our ears cannot completely shut out sound but we can often move away from it. Whales, dolphins, shrimp, turtles and zooplankton cannot escape sonic harm from seismic air blasting, oil drilling and more. This was made possible with Executive Order 13797, signed last year by President Trump in order to expand offshore drilling and exploration in U.S. waters. Two months after the order was given, a number of Congress members wrote to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke in strong opposition to offshore oil and gas drilling off the Atlantic coast stating. “Opening the Atlantic to seismic testing 36

and drilling jeopardizes our coastal businesses, fishing communities, tourism and or national security,” they stated. “It harms our coastal economies in the near term, and opens the door to even greater risks from offshore oil and gas production down the road. Therefore, we ask you not to issue any permits for airgun surveys for subsea oil and gas deposits in the Atlantic Ocean.” The seismic airguns move across large areas of ocean, sending constant loud blasts signals every 10-20 seconds. These surveys cause disturbance of vital activities of millions living in the Atlantic Ocean, killing and disorienting marine mammals that depend on sound to function. These mammals use echolocation to defend, navigate, breed and raise young. The elevated alarm responses also cause stress hormones and chemicals to build up in the fish we eat. Marine animals rely on a sonic world to find their way in the dark with song. A deaf whale is a dead whale. Many are found on the shoreline bleeding from their ears because they rise to the surface too suddenly in order to escape deafening man-made sounds. Even those harmed may die slowly. If the manmade assault on ocean-dwellers continues, we could lose hundreds of thousand of whales and dolphins as well as critically endangered species like right whales. A deceased sperm whale that washed ashore: Boca Raton beach, Florida, January 10, 2014. If we listen to music or ocean recordings with a hydrophone, we can decipher a shrimp’s crackle, a lobster vocalizing like a cabasa, an orca’s high cry and a dolphin’s whistle. Few humans get to experience the symphony below the water line. Hearing in the water world is far more difficult today. We have lost some of

Visual underwater environments are shared by renowned photographers, Chuck Davis and Brain Skerry and oceanographers like Sylvia Earle but few are known for presenting the auditory world living below the water line. David Gallo, a leading American oceanographer, bears witness to the dramatic topography of the deep ocean. He shares “Oceans do not transmit light as well as they are efficient at transmitting sounds. We have arrived, making all sorts of noise without regard for the blue world. We use sonar to map the sea floor, identify submarines and navigate shipwrecks. Global trade by sea involves more than 50,000 ships in the commercial fleet with each making its own painful noise in the home of majestic whales and abundant life,” Humpback whales, for example, communicate through a large song repertoire that mirrors the structure of classical music
with repetitive phrases and patterns that change every year. To hear this inspires reverence. Patrick Hof, MD, a research professor of neuroscience, vice chair of the department of neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, has written about spindle cells found in whales as well as humans, which are involved in sensitive judgments and emotional cues. Whales evolved spindle cells completely independent of humans some 30 million years ago. These cells are much larger then those found in humans and whales have more of them than us. Some qualities we assume make us human, whales experienced long before us. How can we dishonor and kill them? Ocean advocacy work can involve aiding lone cetaceans, (lost whales and dolphins) as, disoriented by noise pollution, they become separated from their pod. Unable to hear their way home, they stay near humans and unfamiliar dangers. A lost baby beluga whale in Cook Inlet Alaska was found alone recently, suggesting that noise from boats may have separated it from its mother. This happens all over the world. Once dependent on humans, they rarely return home. Horse Wisdom for Life The Wisdom of Returning to Grazing
By Carrie Brady
T
ake a moment to jot down at least five things that bring you joy. Once you have done so, ask yourself if you had trouble with this request or made it more complicated. Did you wish you knew what the goal was so you’d know the “right” answer? Did you second guess or cross out your answers? Did you put something on the list because you thought you “should”? Do you wonder what someone else might think of your list? If you answered yes to any of these, you are thinking like a human, not a horse. Humans tend to live in our heads, not our bodies. We overanalyze and judge ourselves, and each other. For a horse, this wouldn’t be a hard question. Horses know precisely what brings them pleasure and given the freedom to do so, they will choose delight in every moment. They live 38
Miami-Dade/Florida Keys
in the present, fully in their senses; they do not judge. Joy is their default state. Fortunately, if we pay attention, they can teach humans how to live this way. Humans tend to focus on the past and future; horses stay grounded happily in the present. They are prepared to respond to any situation if necessary, but usually remain resting in the moment, eating and enjoying the sensory delights available to them. This difference between horses and humans is clear to anyone who has seen horses respond to an unexpected loud noise, such as a heavy tree limb falling near their pasture. Horses will jerk their heads up and locate the source of the noise, then watch the branch for a moment to see if it poses any threat, and, upon realizing it does not, go right back to eating their breakfast. A human standing nearby would likely spend the next several minutes looking up, worrying what else might fall, and thinking about the terrible things that
www.namiami.com
could have happened if the branch had hit the horses, fence, or truck. Many humans have adopted fightor-flight as their perpetual way of being. You rush from one thing to another, think about other things while you are doing something else. You may ignore your body until it breaks, and then try to numb the pain rather than addressing the cause. You can deprive yourself of healthy food and live dehydrated despite an abundance of water. Or you sit more than you move, and move in ways you don’t particularly enjoy while following a “no pain, no gain” motto. You work while you dream of time off, and yet you may fill your time off with more work while you dream of vacation. So you are not truly here or anywhere. You’ve scattered your attention. In general, humans give very little thought to intentions for a life they want to live. Horses are all about attention and intention. As prey animals, it is a matter
Horses choose delight every day. And no matter what is going on in the external environment, humans also have the ability to return to grazing for at least part of every day. Slow down out of flight-or-flight into the more peaceful state of rest and digest. Give the body and mind the opportunity to recharge, gain new perspectives and simply enjoy life. of survival for them to understand the intention of the other living things with whom they interact. Horses read not only visual body language, but they also pick up the respiration and heart rate of any living creature nearby. They know when a person is acting one way but feeling another; this incongruence makes them uncomfortable. When you are with them, all they ask of you is your authentic presence in the here
and now. The list you made at the beginning of this article will help you gain some insight into your attention and to set an intention. Consider these questions: How many items on your list are part of your daily life? What is the balance of sensory joys (joys that relate to sight, smell, sound, taste, touch or movement) versus non-sensory joys? The latter could include crossing items off your to-do list, which may give a sense of satisfaction that isn’t rooted in your physical senses. How many items involve a sense of connection to other living things, nature and spirituality? How many are independent joys? Horses choose delight every day. And no matter what is going on in the external environment, humans also have the ability to return to grazing for at least part of every day. Slow down out of flight-orflight into the more peaceful state of rest
and digest. Give the body and mind the opportunity to recharge, gain new perspectives and simply enjoy life. Returning to grazing helps you bring the best of you to any situation; it is an especially important practice when life is challenging. Feeding yourself a daily diet of delight is a choice. It doesn’t mean the stressors don’t exist, but rather that you can put them down for a few minutes. Now create a longer list of things that bring you joy. Pay attention to the mix of items, including sensory, non-sensory, connection and independent joys. Consider what delights each of your six senses—the usual five plus movement—which is very important to horses and humans. Horses are in tune with their bodies; they know what makes them feel good physically. Consider what brings you a sense of connection and support, and also what you can do alone. Horses naturally live in herds, support each other and work together for the benefit of the herd. However,

they know how to independently selfsoothe and have strong individual preferences. Determine how you can incorporate each item into your daily life, even if it is just for a few minutes. If a beach vacation is one of the things that brings you joy, for example, you can add it into your daily life by hanging pictures or running your fingers through sand. Sprouts, Shoots and Why Women Should Eat Them by Elysia Steigert
H
igh in phytoestrogens, or plant estrogen, sprouts are a natural ally for women’s health. They work their magic by slowing cell growth and reducing inflammation. As a result, plant estrogens offer relief from menopause, and lower women’s risk for heart disease and breast cancer. On a smaller scale, sprouts are jam packed with nutrition, yet are tiny and require no preparation. They come in a variety of types which makes them easy to incorporate into any meal. Busy women or moms who are looking to stay healthy have sprouts to help do so, as sprouts can go in salads, sandwiches, wraps, and more. Eating one cup of broccoli sprouts per day makes it harder for the body to absorb fat, in turn helping with weight loss. In the 21st century, women are looking for quick and easy ways to make their life simpler. Sprouts are key to the modern women’s plan of action for a healthy lifestyle. Kale, spinach, broccoli, garlic, avocados, blueberries- these are all superfoods that every person should keep at the top of their grocery list. But there’s something missing-a category that is underestimated and overlooked. What could completely revamp your health? Sprouts and shoots! Sprouts are simply vegetables in their first few days of growth. The most common types of sprouts are alfalfa and clover, frequently used in sandwiches and salads. Also popular are broccoli sprouts, garlic sprouts, and daikon sprouts. Sprouts are high in vitamins A, B, and C. They are a good source of fiber, protein, and have enzymes that aid in digestion. Like berries, sprouts are high in antioxidants that prevent DNA destruction. This means they help slow the aging process! So instead of an expensive night cream, a consistent addition of sprouts in your diet will help prevent skin damage. Hopefully devoted sprout eaters will stay looking as young as their little sprouts! Broccoli is well known as an anti-carcinogenic vegetable, but did you know that broccoli sprouts are about 50 times more anti-carcinogenic than fully grown broccoli? These babies pack a punch! People fighting or preventing cancers are regularly advised to eat broccoli sprouts for this reason. However, broccoli sprouts aren’t the only hero. Studies on canavanine, an amino acid analog in alfalfa, have shown benefits for pancreatic, colon and leukemia cancers. Sprouts also contain saponins. Saponins lower ones levels of bad cholesterol and bad fat, but don’t affect the healthy HDL fats. Plant estrogen in sprouts also makes for strong bones. In a similar family as sprouts, there are shoots. Shoots include types such as snow pea, sunflower, and wheatgrass. Shoots are a more developed stage of the plant, where it is no longer a sprout, but is not nearly a full grown plant yet. At this stage, the shoot is crunchy and easy to eat. Shoots are used as a garnish by chefs, and are easy to eat on the go as a snack. Wheatgrass is probably the most famous of the shoots, and with good reason. A two ounce serving of wheatgrass has as many nutrients as almost three pounds of the best vegetables! Vitamins A, B, and C are potent in wheatgrass, with there being more vitamin C in wheatgrass than an orange. Capable of giving your body a natural cleanse, a daily serving of this juiced vegetable acts as a natural detoxifier. It also builds red blood cells and enzymes that fight tumors. universal life force is gathered before being formed into every living thing on earth. Mt. Shasta is like a geyser, spouting a huge uprush of prana into global circulation before it is embodied in various forms, just like kundalini energy surges upward in your own energy system. In the human energetic field, this first chakra, or the root chakra, is responsible for your sense of safety and security on this earthly journey. Balancing the root chakra creates the solid foundation for opening the other six chakras.
The Sacral Chakra
Mother Earth’s Energy Centers Locating and Connecting to the Earth Chakras
by Robin Clare
O
ur seven major human energy chakras begin at the base of the spine and end at the crown of our head. They are connected by a current of life force energy (known as kundalini or prana) that flows between and through each one. Given that planet Earth is a living, breathing organism like us, it should make sense that she would have her own set of energy chakras. And yet, few people seem to know about these interesting locations and the purpose of the earth chakras. The seven major earth chakras are connected through ley lines that create an energy field around the entire planet. The ley lines carry wisdom from Mother Earth to her inhabitants. Imagine how your life might expand if you were to consciously align your seven major human energy chakras with the earth’s seven major chakras. By examining a flat map of the world, you will see two major ley lines 42
Miami-Dade/Florida Keys
intersecting to form an infinity symbol and connecting at the earth’s major chakra sites. One major ley line is feminine and is called the Rainbow Serpent. The second major ley line is masculine, and is called the Plumed, or Quetzalcoatl, Serpent. In this article we’ll explore the earth chakras to gain deeper appreciation of how to integrate the earth chakra energy with human chakra energy. This is important because the intention for both earth and human energy chakras is the same—to keep all life grounded and healthy.
The Root Chakra
e first chakra of Mother Earth is Mt. Th Shasta, a mountain in Northern California. It is here that the Rainbow Serpent enters the chakra process and activates the earth and your root chakra. Mt. Shasta is the primal chakra of the world’s energy system. At Mt. Shasta, the
www.namiami.com
e second chakra of the earth is located Th on three points of a triangle located in two South American countries. It is centered on the Island of the Sun in Lake Titicaca, high in the Andes Mountains. Here, positive life forms and evolutionary advancements are “birthed” that will take us into the future. The other corners of the second earth chakra triangle are Cuzco and Machu Picchu, in Peru. Lake Titicaca contains two sacred islands, the Island of the Sun (masculine) and the Island of the Moon (feminine), all represented for you to work on your inner balance of your own divine masculine and feminine. This is where the Rainbow Serpent (female) and Quetzalcoatl Serpent (male) meet to balance and unify their masculine and feminine energies. The sacral chakra in the body is represented by a still crystal-clear pool that holds the sacred feminine and sacred masculine in balance. To have the sacral represented by Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world, with stories of a hidden city at its base, is an interesting correlation.
The Solar Chakra
The third chakra of the earth is in Australia’s Northern Territory at Uluru, or Ayers Rock, the name used to describe the huge red monolith. Its sister rock formation, Kata Tjuta has many large red stones rather than just one. Here, the solar plexus of the globe functions to keep up Earth’s vitality and that of all the species on the planet. The Rainbow Serpent comes up from beneath the earth to emerge at Uluru, which then “sings” a special song that moves on to
Kata Tjuta. In Dreamtime legends of the Aborigines, it is said that this umbilical cord of the planet will one day unite heaven and earth. The Solar Plexus is all about family, passion and creativity, and the ancient culture of the Aborigine has an abundance of this. Through their art, dance and stories, we can heal and enrich our solar plexus and that of the world family. As in the human energetic field, the third or solar plexus chakra is representative of the emotional energies critical to enjoyment of life.
The Heart Chakra
The heart chakra is located at the green and pleasant land, as described in William Blake’s “New Jerusalem”, or Glastonbury. It holds the divine green of the heart chakra, so healing and abundant. The Rainbow Serpent sweeps through the sacred sites there, such as the Tor at Glastonbury and the Avebury Stone Circle. Glastonbury is known as the center of the Holy Grail, while Shaftesbury holds the Sacred Spear of Purpose. When these two massive earth energies merge, the Rainbow Serpent will carry the Holy Grail frequency around the world. In this unique time, we can also open our hearts and help to heal the earth. Glastonbury Tor’s connection to the heart is also with the seven holy springs that pump out the crystal-clear waters. By purifying Mother Earth’s fluids, we are balancing the masculine and feminine. By connecting to our own corresponding heart chakra, we find our internal balance and connect to abundant resources for our lives.
earth, we can create a new world unity for all religions and cultures. By connecting to the earth’s throat chakra, you will able to project your affirmations of love out to the world and to your inner world through vibrating sounds in your throat.
The Third Eye Chakra
The third eye of the earth is related to the shifting of consciousness. The third eye chakra moves 1/12th around the globe approximately every 2,230 years, with the procession of the equinox. These days, the sixth chakra is in Western Europe, conjunct with the heart chakra. This Aeon Activation Center will next be in Brazil. In the same way that your third eye enables higher dimension energies to interact with you, so does this chakra of the earth. For our purposes, we are following the higher dimensional energies to the extraordinary energies of Scotland. The Celtic regions are known for their support in honoring the teachings of the highest forms of consciousness on the planet. Your third eye connects you to all forms of higher consciousness, from angels to spirit guides to ascended Beings. By aligning with the earth’s third eye, you will shift your consciousness to greater connection to non-physical support Beings for your unique life on planet Earth. Through this greater connection, you may serve Mother Earth in a far more expansive manner.
The Crown Chakra
The crown chakra is in Mt. Kailash (Tibet), and is where the Rainbow Serpent and Plume Serpent are released into the world and the stars. Mt. Kailash, the “roof of the world”, is the most sacred of the Himalayan Mountains and represents the crown of creation. Ancient mystic teachings reveal that there is a Lost Chord of Creation. In terms of the earth chakras, Mt. Kailash sounds the note of praise of the sacred, Glastonbury sounds the note of love, and Uluru and Kata Tjuta sing of thanks-giving. When these three notes are combined into one force, the world will harmonize into the future. By connecting your crown chakra to the energies of Mt. Kailash, you will experience the sacredness of your life’s journey. The way of the Tibetan Monk is very silent and still, as is the sense in your crown chakra. You will realize the very personal nature of your spiritual journey and the reflection will complete the experience so perfectly, that your mind, body, spirit and soul will rejoice. Robin Clare is the co-founder of EarthChakra.tours, with Tor Webster. The Throat Chakra
e fifth chakra of the earth is shared Th between the Great Pyramids of Egypt and Mt. Olives in Israel. It beckons us to listen to and respect the Earth and communicate our truth. This is the only chakra that is not found along a ley line, but it is in the exact center of Earth’s land mass. Between the ancient cultures of Egypt and Israel, we will find a balance within the throat chakra that will help heal the difficulties that define the turmoil in the Middle East. The results were such a revelation that there was no choice but to share her knowledge with a wider audience, especially in Miami, which lagged in wellness initiatives. “But I knew my business couldn’t be done in the old way. It had to be modern, beautiful and of the highest standards regarding every facet to captivate a new customer base that wouldn’t have gone to the hippie health food stores of previous generations,” she said. Indeed, her vision resonated with the 21st-century wellness movement. Holistic healing begins upon entering the Sacred Space Miami’s tranquil setting, an oasis in an emerging, urban neighborhood. Dascal commissioned prominent local architect Rene Gonzalez for its chic design coupled with nature’s grounding effect through a landscaped courtyard of tropical fruit trees and palms. The venue hosts multiple events including indepth retreats and the annual Mindfulness Festival copresented by Modern ÖM. Beyond wellness, it inspires celebrations of all kinds like weddings and corporate meetings. “One of our new projects is developing retreats at Paradise Farms, an organic property I recently purchased in nearby Homestead to expand our services,” said Dascal, who’s in the midst of fully renovating the beloved agritourism destination for farm-totable dinners and accommodations in charming bungalows. “It truly lives up to its name with organic and biodynamic certification and a sacred geometry design to grow high vibrancy produce like edible flowers, baby greens and oyster mushrooms.” She’s always looking for innovative approaches to help clients achieve their goals and find the balance that has changed her life. Dascal believes the next wellness chapter incorporates technology and plans to feature these amenities such as chromotherapy, or colored light therapy, and air and water filter systems into a new state-of-the-art studio. When construction is completed soon, it will be one of the city’s finest facilities to practice yoga, meditate and more. “People are also really enjoying our new guest chef series,” she said, of inviting local chefs like James Beard Award Winner Michelle Bernstein and Niven Patel of Ghee Indian Kitchen to cook alongside Horacio Rivadero and Veronica Manolizi, executive chef and pastry chef, respectively, for onsite Plant Miami restaurant and lounge. “I describe my concept as ‘vibrant organic living,’ because it’s not just about eating at the restaurant, going to Paradise Farms or buying something at Flow. It’s the whole story.” Written by Rebecca Kleinman, freelance writer. Connect at beckwrite@gmail.com.

Modern life as lived today can create feelings of disconnection and isolation. Reconnecting with nature helps us rediscover our truer, wilder selves; it also helps us give back to the natural world we are a part of. “What really feeds and nourishes the human soul is our connection to each other and to the more-than-human natural world,” says Pegnataro. Once we’ve reconnected with the earth and all living beings on a physical and energetic level, we can then begin to practice more sustainable living from that place of connection. Some local experts provided some wisdom on how to both reconnect with nature and practice more sustainable living.
Give Gratitude to the Natural World
Nature’s Matrix Strengthening Connections to All Living Things
By Brooke Adams Law
M
any humans begin to feel more alive as the longer days and warmer air of spring invigorate us. This “waking up” we often experience during this time of year is a metaphor for the journey of “waking up” in a larger sense. At some level, we remember that humanity is in fact just one part of the rhythm of nature, connected to the earth and to all living things. Humans, animals, plants and minerals are all intricately interconnected, though modern life has separated many of us from that reality. “We’ve largely lost connection with the sacredness and beauty of life. We’re no longer participants in the flow of life; we’re consumers of it,” says Justin Pegnataro, executive director of Two Coyotes Wilderness School in Conneticut. The stress of work and modern demands—such as paying the mortgage, raising children in a competitive world and the distractions available via technology—can make it difficult to connect with nature in the deep way that our ancestors once did. We live in a crucial time for life on this planet; it cannot continue as it currently stands. “Humans today, particularly in North America, are living a totally unsustainable lifestyle, but we’re insulated from [the repercussions of] it,” says Pegnataro. Freshwater is being consumed at a faster rate than it can be renewed. The U.S. comprises 4.4 percent of the world’s population, yet is currently responsible for 18 percent of the world’s total primary energy consumption. Climate change is causing melting glaciers, rising sea levels, weather extremes, ocean acidification and heavier rainfall, all of which can have catastrophic consequences for life everywhere. The call to action is clear: humans must live differently if we are to continue to live on the planet. But how do we begin? The first step may be to reconnect with nature. About 80 percent of Americans live in urban or suburban areas today, yet humans as a species have spent about 95 percent of their time on the planet as hunter-gatherers living in close connection with the earth. 46

We take so much in our life for granted, especially the natural wonders that surround us. “We look at the sun and we take it for granted,” says Jessica Hunter, a shamanic practitioner in Bridgeport,Ct. “Yet it provides warmth for the planet, light and the ability for life to flourish so we have food and shelter.” Creating a ritual that conveys our gratitude to the natural world can re-ground us in a space of thankfulness. It can be as simple as looking up to the sun and thinking words of gratitude and appreciation, or it may be a more complex process. “Come from a place where you can make a ritual that’s personalized to you,” Hunter recommends. “What is truly coming from your heart? Touch into your feelings. The best way to connect with nature is from your own spirit.” Deana Paqua, a teacher of spiritual and holistic health teaches a concept from the traditional teachings of the Andes, called “Ayni”, which means sacred reciprocity. “In our contemporary culture, we ‘take’ on a grand scale from the Earth and do not give back as a regular conscious practice,” says Paqua. She suggests leaving an offering whenever we take something from the earth. “Offerings can be something as simple as a flower, a small crystal, a piece of hair or seeds. Whether you take a stone during a walk, a shell from the beach, fresh produce from the garden or some flower clippings, say a few words or a short prayer of gratitude, and leave your offering in the spot of your choosing.”
Mindfully Reconnect with Nature Each week, spend unplugged, quiet time in nature. “We’re not separate from nature; we’re a part of it,” reminds Hunter. It is easy
to forget that since our lifestyles create artificial separation from nature. Even when we do leave our house or office, we’re often driving, on the phone, listening to music or simply wrapped up in our own thoughts; we don’t notice the world around us. Hunter recommends simply focusing our energy on the outside world when we want to reconnect with nature. “Sit near a body of water, and smell it, taste it and spend time appreciating it. Take a moment to feel the sun on your face. Even if you live in an urban area, nature is intermingled everywhere. Take the time to appreciate the bird that sits outside your window.” Pegnataro suggests similarly simple actions, including going out into nature and having a cup of tea or running outside barefoot in the morning grass. “It just might be the doorway to begin a different kind of conversation,” he says.
Set Up Bird Feeders Even during winter when we often spend more time inside, bird feeders can bring nature to us. “Feeders aren’t necessarily for the birds,” says Patrick Comins, executive director of the Connecticut Audubon Society. “The feeders are actually for your enjoyment— they’re for you to see the birds and connect with them.” Comins suggests keeping a list of the birds seen at the feeders and involving every member of the family. Every year is different; a feeder may attract a certain species one year that won’t return for 20 years. “That’s the great thing about nature,” he says. “You can step out your door and find something new every single day.” Seeing birds up close can help us to better appreciate them, which may prompt us to take additional actions to protect them and their habitat.
Plant an Organic Garden Whether in raised beds in a suburban backyard or in pots on the

If we add composting food waste to our practices, we can use that compost to feed our garden, seeing the cycle of life even more clearly.
Practice Sustainable Living Once we’re more firmly rooted in our connection to the earth and all living things, we can move from that place of connection and begin to take action to protect the environment. “When I hear people say, ‘Just throw that away,’ I always say, there is no ‘away’,” says Daphne Dixon, executive director and cofounder of Norwalk-based Live Green. “The water we’re drinking today is the water that the dinosaurs drank. There’s no new water and there’s no ‘away’.” She recommends a practice called “materials management”, or recognizing that everything is material. “I always try to have an awareness of an ideal life cycle for everything.” Once Dixon finishes using something, she considers the best next phase for that material, whether it’s recycling, donating or reusing it for a different purpose. Consciously working to decrease the trash we throw “away” is a crucial practice for creating a more sustainable lifestyle.
Conserve Electricity In North America, we continue to use nonrenewable resources at an unsustainable pace. Simply conserving electricity can go a long way. Companies like HE Energy Solutions complete home energy audits. Their technicians analyze the current use of energy in the home and then replace light bulbs with LEDs, plug holes in baseboards to preserve heat, switch shower heads to low-flow, and add weather strips to doors and more. These measures will lower our footprint while also saving us money on utilities.

KELLY NOONAN-GORES ON HOW WE SHAPE OUR HEALTH wildlife,” says Comins. He recommends creating a nectar garden for butterflies, native bees and other pollinators. Utilizing native plants will benefit more species of birds and insects than non-native ones. Keeping the lawn as chemical-free as possible encourages birds and wildlife. Likewise, creating some structure in the lawn—plants and flowers that help birds transition from the grass up to the tallest trees—can be beneficial. “Moving from low plants like violets to knee-highs like coneflowers to plants that are waist-high provide cover and foraging areas for birds,” Comins says.
Connect with Local Organizations Getting involved with local organizations can help us become more active and engaged in our communities. Many local environmental and conservationist groups are banding together to contribute to hands-on projects and advocacy campaigns that can help our actions go much farther than each group might alone. “In the end, life is going to continue on this planet,” Pegnataro says. “How can humanity responsibly be part of this community of life? How can we ensure the health and wellbeing of future generations of human beings and other beings, too?” This is the work we are being called to do at this moment in time. How will we answer? fter Los Angeles native Kelly Noonan-Gores spent 20 years in front of the camera as an actress, she turned her talents to producing award-winning films like Tooken, Beneath and Take a Seat. She considers her latest, the documentary HEAL (HealDocumentary.com), to be her ultimate achievement. “I included as many inspiring stories of healing change as possible to expand viewers’ beliefs in what’s possible, to alter the narrative around mystery illnesses being incurable or cancer equaling death,” says Noonan-Gores. When she was prescribed Prilosec for acid reflux at age 28, Noonan-Gores decided she was too young and otherwise healthy to become dependent on it. By taking an integrative nutrition course, she realized the possibilities of alternative healing methods, catalyzing an ongoing exploration into optimizing life and health through the powers of mind, body and spirit. “We are not the passive victims of faulty genes; our lifestyle choices, thoughts, and beliefs shape our health,” says Noonan-Gores, a longtime practitioner of yoga and meditation. HEAL features uplifting interviews with the scientists, visionaries and healers that inspired her, including Deepak Chopra, Bruce Lipton, Marianne Williamson and patients diagnosed with diverse ailments that sought different healing modalities to take their health into their own hands.
www.namiami.com
What are some common elements in the stories of patients featured in HEAL? One common thread revolves around our subconscious programming. From the time we’re born, we are downloading “programs” or belief systems from society, parents, teachers and whoever and whatever else is in our environment. Many have learned through their own healing journeys of negative belief systems running their lives; each one had to become aware of these beliefs in order to change. Another is that when events are too painful, we consciously suppress or unconsciously repress them, and that trauma stays in our cells and might manifest in disease. To move that stuck energy, we must heal that emotional trauma to allow physical ailments to transform. A third theme is understanding how stress affects our lives and immune systems, and doing things to manage or mitigate it through tools like meditation or breath work. Some of the patients worked with spiritual psychologists using Emotional Freedom Techniques to release past stress held in their body, shifting beliefs to a trusting, non-victim place. Dietary shifts also made a difference. In acute healing, we realize the effect of different foods which can reduce or exacerbate inflammation.
Which messages in how the body and mind collaborate to promote healing are audiences keying in on? Visualization is a powerful and widespread tool in healing; we can use imagination to reframe and tell a different story. Research has shown that visualizations can affect brain chemistry and lessen side effects. The mind is conditioned to go to the worst-case scenario; we can instead retrain it to focus on the best-case scenario, and what we want to happen, increasing the likelihood it will occur.
What role do faith and belief systems play in the healing journey? It all comes down to what we believe. If you believe in and expect an effect, like what we see with a placebo, the brain will create and release natural chemicals that might be prompted by a targeted drug. Believing you are a victim of genes and circumstance induces stress, whereas having faith in a loving universe produces greater ease.
How do emotions influence health and healing? Gregg Braden and Joe Dispenza, interviewed in HEAL, discuss how rage,
jealousy, trauma and fear put the body in a stress response and create inflammation and other detrimental effects. But love, kindness, joy, gratitude and compassion release healing hormones and neurochemicals like oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine. It’s empowering to know that when negative emotions arise, you can become aware of and release them, then pivot to focus on gratitude or do something that cultivates joy. It’s a moment-bymoment choice.

The more conscious we become, the more we treat ourselves, others and our Earth with compassion. As more people awaken and demand a different response, the paradigm will shift. Health care will have to change as we apply the power in our hearts and minds. Our bodies are a microcosm of the universe; the planet can heal itself and thrive as we remove the toxins and become fully aware of what we are putting in the air, water and soil. ou just go just got a message from your Gynecologist office that you have HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) and precancerous cells (CIN). They want you to come in for further testing and possible surgery. Although hearing news like that is shocking, HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) with 80% of adults affected. It can come and go, but some strains can lead to cervical cancer in women, and cancer of the throat and other body parts of both genders. Customarily, if any abnormal cells are discovered during a routine pelvic exam (PAP), most gynecologists are extremely aggressive, urging more invasive testing, LEEP (Loop electrosurgical excision procedure) or surgery to remove the cells. A huge problem with this approach is that the surgery does not eradicate the root causes of HPV infection 50

and CIN, and so the infection and CIN can often re-occur. However, a little known holistic alternative is a naturopathic treatment called called Escharotic Therapy. Over the course of six-weeks, abnormal or precancerous cells are gently sloughed off using natural botanical and mineral substances applied to the cervix by a trained practitioner. Regeneration of healthy tissue is promoted through a regime of special supplements that boost immunity and the healing process, and that can help to eliminate HPV. These include mega doses of Beta Carotene, Folic acid AHCC and more. Additionally, avoidance of environmental toxins, infections and tobacco; and adherence to a vegetable-based diet of organic foods will help in the healing process. Strengthening the natural immune response is central to Escharotic Therapy. Together with stress management through

WHAT IS A DOULA DOULAING — The act of educating, loving, respecting, listening, embracing, advocating for, and assisting a woman prenatally, during labor, childbirth and after.
P
arents have been expressing a desire to work with professional doulas, like Debra Geymeyer of Holistic South Pregnancy & Birth Center in Miami, who provide labor support together with midwives and ob-gyns throughout pregnancy, labor and birth. Doula care has risen in the past 5 years, due to a surge in cesarean surgeries, as more women and their partners are educating themselves and taking a closer look at birth choices. More births with midwives and in birth centers—water births—are taking place as statistics show over 90% of low risk healthy pregnant women do not need to birth in a hospital. As describe in her Geymayr’s website: Doula is a “Greek” word meaning “mothering the mother”. Providing mothers and fathers to-be continual support throughout labor, birth and early postpartum. A wonderful way of achieving a more relaxed, natural birth using special comfort measures while supporting Mom 100% during each phase of labor. Assisting with the preparation and implementation of birth plans. Answering questions, offering educated information of risks and benefits to medications and supporting the choices of each client. Reassuring and helping couples to labor longer at home, avoiding potential medical interventions if requested by suggesting position changes, using breathing/relaxation techniques, music and massage. Working together with Dad so he can relax and enjoy this “Celebration
of Life” without tension, frustration and fear, knowing mother and baby are calm, supported, focused and able to follow the “natural instincts” of her body. Letting go of the tension-fear-pain syndrome while relaxing & meditating during contractions, tapping into a deeper consciousness, saving energy needed to breathe while birthing your baby. No matter what turn your birth path takes, your Doula is there to assist. Doula care offers the natural laboring mothers an invaluable resource of comfort and support during labor and delivery. It is important to note that any certified doula should not provide any clinical care, interfere with staff, or give any medical advice to a client. A Doula works together with nurses, care providers and midwives to bring the very best care and support, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Using various techniques the mother is made to feel comforted, relaxed, and focused in early-active labor, throughout active labor and during delivery without getting in the way of midwives or doctors who will ultimately deliver the baby and address any and all necessary medical procedures involved with delivery. Debra Geymayr, E-RYT HBCE, CD(DONA), CLD, CPD, CHBE, IMP, PES, is a Certified Labor, Birth and Postpartum Doula, Directress of Prenatal Plus Yoga and HSPBC, Childbirth Educator with the HypnoBirthing ® Institute, Baby Massage Teacher; Placenta Encapsulation Specialist. Someday My Prince Will Come Holly Kallie
E
xpressing her world on paper and canvas has been the basis of Holly Kallie’s life for as long as she can remember. “Crayons and paints were an important part of my world as a very small child,” she recalls, “and the desire to paint or draw the people around me, using the lakes and beaches that I love as a setting, continues to be a driving force in my life.” Kallie developed this close affinity with water early in life during summers spent at her parents’ tiny cottage on a lake. Today, living in her own small lakeside retreat, the Wisconsin artist’s fascination is captured anew by the mercurial colors, reflections and mystery below the surface of the ever-changing waters. “For me, water carries the same essence or spirit of the women and children that I paint: flowing, changing, playful and elusive,” she advises. Achieving a soulful realism through the use of multiple layers of paint and glazes, Kallie continually refines her self-taught technique. “With my art, I seek to bring a sense of joy, love, peace and connection with our natural surroundings,” she says. “I hope my paintings take the viewer there.” View the artist’s portfolio at HollyKallie.com. …the majority of the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect us against abnormal cell production, is located in the intestinal tract so ideal intestinal tract function is of critical importance in the prevention of cancer.
Cancer Prevention: Yes You Can by Dr. Conrad G. Maulfair, Jr.
C
ancer begins at the cellular level. There is typically a genetic mutation or alteration in genes, which, if it is allowed to persist, will create an abnormal cell, then multiple abnormal cells and then a cancer. Under normal circumstances, this happens to all of us every day, but the immune system is able to identify this abnormal cell and destroy it before it becomes a conglomerate of cells, i.e., a tumor. The key then to preventing cancer is preventing an abnormal cell becoming multiple abnormal cells. An important question to ask then would be: “What contributes to the cell genetic material becoming mutant, or to mutate?” Another obvious important question to ask would be: “What can be done to enhance the destroying of the mutant cells, the abnormal cells?” Intravenous vitamin C to the rescue! Over the years, numerous scientific studies and articles have highlighted the ability of vitamin C to be active against cancer. At Maulfair Medical Center, we have been using infusions of vitamin C for decades with sometimes dramatic results. How does this relate to prevention? The beginning of cancer is an abnormal “genetically mutant” cell. If it is allowed to reproduce, it eventually creates cancer. If
intravenous vitamin C is helpful in treating cancer which has millions of cancer cells, would it not be potentially helpful in handling a few abnormal cells before they become tumors? In other words, utilizing an infusion of vitamin C periodically would seem to be an important part of a cancer prevention protocol. We could kill off a few cancerous cells before they become many. It is important to note that the amount of vitamin C necessary to achieve this is much greater than is obtainable through oral vitamin C, so the infusion route is necessary. Certainly taking some vitamin C orally in addition is okay and helpful, but it is not adequate enough to be effective for killing cancer cells. Now let’s go a step further. Another important question to ask would be: “What things can contribute to causing the genetic mutations occurring in the first place?” This research and observations have also been done over the decades identifying hundreds—if not thousands—of various toxic chemicals and toxic metal exposures that contribute to these genetic perturbations that result in cancer cell production. Additionally, the majority of the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect us against abnormal cell production, is
located in the intestinal tract so ideal intestinal tract function is of critical importance in the prevention of cancer. Diagnostics to identify the presence of toxic substances, i.e., various classes of chemicals, insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, etc., and toxic metals can be identified and, most importantly, therapeutic modalities to decrease those exposures are also available. If you have a family history of cancer or are concerned about cancer for various reasons, something can be done about it! The age-old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is valid when it comes to cancer. In addition to the above, having an ongoing input of good quality nutrients is essential to maintain an ongoing cellular energy level. There is a class of compounds called nitrilosides—found in hundreds of edible plants worldwide—that have shown to be helpful in cancer prevention. These compounds can be in lima beans, apple seeds, bitter almonds, nuts, millet, maize, sorghum and apricot, plum and peach pits. Combine the avoidance of toxins and the ingestion of organic, clean food and food items high in cancer fighting compounds and you will be well on your way to a life free from cancer. Why stop there? Seek the advice of physicians who are familiar with all of the above and you can be well on your way toward preventing cancer and at the same time improving the quality of life for your future. Dr. Conrad Maulfair has been improving the health of his patients for more than 40 years utilizing noninvasive medical modalities. SLEEP GREAT EVERY NIGHT “I’ve been using Sleep Apnea Relief for the past three months and now my pulminologist wants to pass it on to his patients who wear CPAP.” - Florence, NY, NY

“For 42 years we searched for something to take care of Restless Leg Syndrome. Not only does this product work but it works instantly! It’s Terrific. I recommend it to anyone who has this problem.” - Robert- Nebraska
Now you can end Sleep Apnea , Restless Legs and Leg Cramps and get a good Night’s sleep – night after night. Hi, I’m Steve Frank and I suffered from sleep apnea for years, so I know exactly what you’re going through. I even tried the CPAP machine but I could not sleep with anything strapped to my face. It was a serious problem and I was determined to find an answer. As an herbalist, I diligently pursued a group of herbs that would correct this problem and thank goodness, my persistence paid off! My patent-pending formulation has helped thousands and I use it every night. Now you can try it too! My Mom asked me what to do about persistent leg cramps. She had tried all the suggested supplements but still had problems. I put together a group of herbs to relax nerves, reduce tension and increase circulation. It worked great for her! Later, I found that it works for Restless Legs as well. Now you can use it too.
You owe it to yourself & your spouse to try these great products!
