letter from publisher

I

can recall the first time I was truly conscious of being physically in alignment. At the time I had been an avid “home yoga” practitioner for years but was new to a class setting with teacher intervention. It was a real aha moment when the teacher came around and gently adjusted my position, and I felt—really FELT—the moment my body was aligned. Such a difference that minute change made! It was so remarkable that I still remember it now, decades later. It seems to me that alignment is something that can be truly understood only by feeling such a difference, Nicole Miale like understanding night because we have day. Without the change, we can’t recognize what is “wrong.” Most of us exist in a perpetual state of misalignment, thanks to the rigors and stresses of daily life and the odd positions that our jobs, habits, injuries or family responsibilities may put us in. Chances are we’ve lived our lives in a twisted-up state of being for years, possibly even since we were children (think heavy backpacks have no impact on kids’ alignment?!). Given the habits and patterns ingrained into our bodies over time, we may no longer have clear muscle memory of what we could and really ought to feel like. We may have become accustomed to small restrictions or underlying aches and pains. Without us realizing it, our movements may have become smaller, less effortless and certainly less playful or joyful. But just because we’re used to them doesn’t mean aches, pains or movement limitations need to be there. We have the ability, in any moment, to tune into our bodies with a breath and change our position or posture. Even the act of taking a deep breath or two and consciously releasing tension will change our body in that given moment. Roll your shoulders; yawn deeply and unclench your jaw. Did you feel a difference? I sure did! Obviously deeper, longer-held issues will take more than just a few breaths to release. Fortunately, there is a lot of research and many wonderful techniques available to aid us in the journey back to alignment from wherever we find ourselves. In this month’s articles, we focus on many different therapies known to aid the body in its constant effort to maintain equilibrium and heal what we may have inadvertently done to ourselves. These modalities include many bodywork options, practitioner-assisted release (such as SET and chiropractic care) and sophisticated healing frequency technologies which may be new to many of us but seem pretty promising when it comes to making lasting positive change in the body. What gets me excited is that there is always something new to try! There is always another concept to explore, so how you feel today may have nothing to do with how you feel in a few days, a few weeks, or a couple months. Start where you are, but don’t unpack and stay there unless you feel as physically good as you want. We all deserve to feel great! With love and light,

Family Facetime Dinners in Ridgefield

R

idgefield is celebrating families with the return of Family Facetime dinners. The goal of the Family Facetime project is to make it easier for families to connect by encouraging (and scheduling) technology-free family time. Upcoming dinners will be October 23 at Parma Market and November 20 at Genoa Deli. Families register online for a Wednesday night dinner at a participating restaurant, for the price of $30 for a family of four. Dinners are picked up on the designated night and participating families are asked to spend an evening at home enjoying each other’s company rather than playing with their devices. Details will be emailed to families once they have registered. Participating families will also receive a basket to collect and stow phones and tablets for the duration of the meal. Research consistently shows what parents have known for a long time: sharing a fun family meal is good for all family members. There are many ways for families to stay connected, but regular family dinners can help you build that time into the family routine. For more information, and to register your family, visit RidgefieldParksandRec.org/home/news/family-facetime.

Reiki Master Expands Practice to Angel Wing

R

eiki Master Lisa Labozzo has expanded her practice to The Angel Wing and The Angel Cooperative in Ridgefield. She offers sessions in “Angelic Automatic Writing,” group meditation Lisa Labozzo and Reiki. An energy worker and Reiki Master Practitioner, Labozzo channels intuitive messages for people and animals. In addition to being a well-respected speaker and adjunct practitioner for weekend retreats in Connecticut and New York, she is also an ordained priest in the Order of Melchizedek. Labozzo is passionate about guiding and healing others through her experiences while bringing peace and love into the world. Ten years ago, after a near-fatal car accident, Labozzo experienced a journey to the angelic realm. She spent months in ICU and a rehabilitation center. During those months of healing, she had experiences of crossing over. As a result, she discovered she was blessed with a gift of healing and insight. “My Reiki is not your typical Reiki session,” says Labozzo. “My session reveals intuitive messages, visions, numerology and channeled messages from deceased loved ones. I assemble all that comes through in my session by email the same day.” For more information, call 203-219-7846, email Lprice116@gmail.com, or visit TheAngelCoop.com. an changing the intestinal bacteria be an effective, safe and tolerable way to slow the inflammatory process involved in multiple sclerosis? The Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, the Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Center at Griffin Hospital, and Yale University are teaming up to help address this question as part of a pilot investigational study. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease. Some studies have found that an imbalance of intestinal bacteria can lead to inflammation in the immune system. This study will provide oral capsules with fecal material (“poop”) from healthy donors to people with MS to see whether it leads to changes in their intestinal bacteria, and whether this could slow the inflammatory process involved in MS. The study team, led by neurologist Dr. Joseph Guarnaccia, is recruiting people who are 18 to 40 years old and have been diagnosed with MS. They must be able to visit Griffin Hospital eight times over four months. Those who complete the study will receive $800. The capsules, procedures and tests are free of charge. The State of Connecticut Department of Public Health is funding this study. The study information is as follows: A Pilot Study of Oral FMT (Fecal Microbial Transplant) in Subjects with Multiple Sclerosis, Griffin Hospital IRB # 2018-09, Principal Investigator Joseph Guarnaccia, MD. For more information, and to take part in this study at Griffin Hospital in Derby, call 203-732-1265, ext. 220 for Sue or ext. 300 for Rockiy. See ad, page 16.

Conflicts Heating Up Arctic Reserves Environmental Destruction Tapped as War Crime Over Scientists warn that the Arctic is Twenty-four scientists from around the world published a letter entitled, “Stop Military Conflicts From Trashing Environment,” in the journal Nature, urging the United Nations International Law Commission to create protections for the environment in armed conflicts. It reads, “We call on governments to incorporate explicit safeguards for biodiversity, and to use the commission’s recommendations to finally deliver a Fifth Geneva Convention to uphold environmental protection during such confrontations.” The four existing Geneva Conventions and their three additional protocols are globally recognized treaties that establish standards under international humanitarian law for the treatment of wounded military personnel, shipwrecked sailors, prisoners of war and civilians during armed conflicts. Violating the treaties amounts to a war crime.

heating up much faster than the world average because of rising greenhouse gas emissions. Over the last five years, the region has been warmer than at any time since record keeping began in 1900, which is opening up untapped reserves of oil, gas, uranium, gold, fish and rare earth minerals. At a May meeting of the Arctic Council,U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Russia and China against “aggressive” actions in the region, saying, “This is America’s moment to stand up as an Arctic nation.” Gao Feng, the head of the Chinese delegation to the council, whose mission is to foster cooperation among Arctic countries and protect the fragile environment, says, “It’s [the U.S.] a country that stepped out of the Paris Agreement and then they’re talking about protecting the environment of the Arctic.”

The Makhonjwa Mountains of South Africa harbor some of the planet’s oldest rocks, including meteorites that have been striking the Earth for eons. According to the peer-reviewed journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, researchers using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy have discovered a 3.3 billion-year-old layer of rock that contains two types of insoluble organic matter, both of which suggest extraterrestrial origins, making it the oldest extraterrestrial organic matter ever identified. Many scientists think the basic molecules of life may have originated in outer space.

Askwsar Hilonga, Ph.D., a chemical engineer and public health scientist in Tanzania, grew up dealing with waterborne diseases such as cholera that made him ill. According to the World Health Organization, he has used his scientific expertise and local knowledge to develop a purification system based on nanomaterials. While the filter is still under study, stations have been set up throughout Tanzania, mostly managed by women, to help those that otherwise would not have safe drinking water.

Ayurveda for Modern Life

A

by Jaya Daptardar

yurveda is a science of life. It is the world’s oldest healing science, originating in India more than 5,000 years ago. Also referred to as “Mother of Healing,” it is based on lifestyle management according to the principle of natural healing systems relating to the five elements of nature. Those five elements pair up and create three doshas in Ayurveda called vata (air, space), pitta (fire, water) and kapha (earth, water). Ayurveda places great emphasis on prevention and encourages the maintenance of health through the harmonious balance of body, mind and soul. This is achieved through right thinking, right diet, lifestyle, use of herbs and matching food with the season. Knowledge of Ayurveda enables one to understand how to create this balance of body, mind and self-consciousness according to one’s own individual constitution and how to create a lifestyle that brings about and maintains balance. Many factors, both internal and external, disturb the balance in our bodies, which is reflected in the mind. These include emotional and physical stress, dietary changes, seasonal and weather changes, physical or mental trauma, work and family relationships and financial stress. Once

these factors are identified, we can take appropriate action to balance or minimize their effects. Balance is order and imbalance is disorder. When you understand the nature of your order and disorder, you can re-establish the order on your own. In the last 20 years, there has been an increase in stress, anxiety and chronic illnesses in the workplace; human resource departments are overwhelmed with finding solutions to daily stress, anxiety, anger, sick days, and resignations due to poor work/life balance. As a result, some organizations are bringing in Ayurvedic experts to coach and train their employees in lifestyle management. Many corporate workplaces now offer yoga, meditation and mindfulness training

during a typical workday. Ayurveda retreats are also becoming popular in the workplace. This ancient science teaches team members to understand different personalities and their typical constitutions (vata, pitta, kapha) to help improve working relationships. Ayurvedic doctors use various wellness assessment techniques to evaluate signs and symptoms of imbalances. They ask a lot of questions; take your pulse; observe your tongue, skin, eyes, hair, physical body form and tone of voice to find the correct imbalance of dosha. Only then will they recommend lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, herbs and cleansing measures to rid the body of accumulated toxins to restore balance. Ayurveda recognizes that each of us is unique, and we respond differently to the many aspects of our modern lives, each with our own inherent strengths and weaknesses. Understanding Ayurveda’s teachings on the relationships between cause and effect, both immediate and subtle, filtered through each individual point of view, will allow its ancient secrets to restore balance to our modern world. Jaya Daptardar, BAMS, MHA, has been practicing and teaching Ayurveda in the U.S. for the past 18 years. She is the founder and president of Active Ayurveda and Yoga LLC and The Institute of Ayurveda and Life Style Management and has developed a wellness program to treat mental health and addiction-related issues. To contact her, email JMDaptardar@hotmail.com, visit AyurBeautyAndLifestyle.com or call 203-857-4123.

The Angel Cooperative Celebrates “Angelversary”

Inspirational Boutique and Healing Space Launches New Extensions by Nicole Miale

L

aura Freed Ancona and Christy Abate had a strong sense of what they wanted when they opened The Angel Cooperative two years ago in Ridgefield. They weren’t sure how it would play out, but they had a vision for an inspirational and collaborative space where people could explore their interest in spirituality and healing in a safe and fun way while buying beautiful products. The front of the space is a shop filled with beautiful and meaningful pieces such as crystals, books, gift items, spiritual objects, clothes, handbags and more. The back of the space is 20

the shungite room, the only one of its kind in the U.S. and an energetic and spiritual draw for practitioners and visitors of all kinds. “We think of ourselves as conductors of an orchestra,” Ancona explains. “Anyone is welcome to come and play but the space has to feel good and the energy has to be pure. Everyone has to want to create something for the greater good. We always want people to come create more magic with us.” Magical is what the past two years have been for the longtime friends and business partners since the doors opened

at the Angel Cooperative. The partners had a unique offering from the start in the shungite room, which drew many curious practitioners to their space. “People come here because they are curious and seeking,” Abate says. “Sometimes they’re not even sure why they have come. They want a safe place to explore, where they can trust the space and trust the practitioners who are here because they know we have already vetted them.” In the shungite room, the Angel Cooperative has hosted events for beloved local practitioners like Carol Essig of Magenta Way; Jeanne Street of Inspirit Healing Studios; Alison DeNicola and Susan Broudy (among others). But until recently, Abate says, they were limited in the scope of events they could hold by the space available in the 13x13 room. That changed in September with the acquisition and opening of the larger adjacent space, the Angel Wing, in the building that used to be Yoga Shala. The partners are excited to now be able to offer their practitioners not only more floor space for workshops and classes, but also a soundproof recording studio, which has created new opportunities for all. “The recording studio, which we’re calling Angel Air, will let us record and archive everything that we’re doing,” Abate explains. “Our practitioners are amazing, but until now their exposure was somewhat limited because it was all live and the shungite room was small. Now we’re going to be able to have larger classes and programs, and record them so they can be made available online as well.” Angel Air will debut a new podcast series this month, which will include an Angel Rapid Fire Round so listeners can get to know the various practitioners in a fun way. Street is already recording her popular Angels Don’t Lie broadcasts from the shungite room. A new YouTube channel launched over the summer and is just the start of the online offerings that are planned, Abate says. The space in the Angel Wing has been freshly painted and energetically

prepared for the new activities that are planned. There is one large studio for classes, workshops or trainings, one private treatment room and the Angel Air recording studio. Space is available for rent by the hour, day or month, depending on practitioner need and room availability. Yoga is offered daily in the space, including the ashtanga yoga that Yoga Shala was previously known for. During the Angelversary this month, the Angel Cooperative and Angel Wing will have various events and activities going on each day; check the website or Facebook page for a complete updated schedule. One of these ongoing activities is the building of the Community Garden outside Angel Wing, where herbalist Kelly Pietro will oversee the planting of a variety of medicinal plants and wild flowers. “There is a heartbeat here that has taken on a life of its own,” Ancona says. “It has woven itself into a really fun bohemian tapestry.” Abate agrees and says, “We’re very grateful and blessed by everything that’s happened so far. Opening Angel Wing opens up a whole new audience to what we do and helps us provide space for a whole new group of practitioners. We’re so excited to see what will happen next!” For more information, call 203-431-2959 or visit TheAngelCoop.com. See ad, page 31.

ANIMAL ASANAS Goats on the Yoga Mat

Sonsedska Yuliia/Shutterstock.com

W

by Yvette Hammett

hen 50 to 60 strangers gather in a barn for their first goat yoga experience, it’s a bit awkward and there’s not much interaction—until the goats come in. “It is an immediate icebreaker, and the place suddenly fills with giggles and laughs,” says Sharon Boustani, whose family runs Gilbertsville Farmhouse, in South New Berlin, New York. There is just something about miniature goats walking around on people’s backs while they do yoga that immediately de-stresses people and makes them downright happy, she adds. It may be fun, but it’s also a form of serious therapy that’s taken off across the nation and around the globe in recent years. Yoga by itself is proven to help with stress and pain relief, better breathing, flexibility and cardiovascular health. Add goats to the mix and the benefits are compounded by the well-documented benefits of human and animal interaction. A number of studies, like one published in June by the American Educational Research Association, have shown that spending time with animals can lower blood pressure and decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Other studies from the fields of psychology, animal welfare, counseling and anthropology note that these interactions offer additional positive health impacts and can reduce loneliness, boost moods and increase feelings of social support. So combining adorable goats with a physically and spiritually beneficial yoga regimen just made sense to Lainey Morse, of Corvallis, Oregon, widely regarded as the mother of goat yoga. In 2015, Morse was diagnosed with a disease and was going through a divorce. “I would go out to my barn or out in the field and just be around my goats,” she says. “I wondered why they didn’t use goats for therapy like they do with horses.”

Goats, she says, have a sense of calm. “When you are around them, you take on that energy, and it’s hard to be stressed out and have anxiety. But they are also really funny animals. They make you laugh.” She started with goat happy hour at her farm, inviting friends she knew were going through issues of their own. “Everybody left happy,” she recalls. When she discussed it with a yogi friend, goat yoga was born. Morse now has 13 partnerships around the country where others teach the classes and she handles the business end. “For me, it’s still about nature and getting out in nature.” Morse says she’s not quite sure why it took off like lightning, but she guesses it’s just because many people love the interaction. April Gould and Sarah Williams run their Arizona Goat Yoga classes at the Welcome Home Ranch, in Gilbert, Arizona. It is now a major tourist destination for the state. “Three to four times a week, we walk about 150 people out into one of the pastures,” Gould says. A lot of visitors from out of state return every time they’re in the area, she adds. And many Arizona residents come once, and then bring back friends and family. “People say it’s the best day of their life. It’s something you kind of have to experience to know why it’s so popular,” says Gould. Those that are more experienced can make it as difficult as they want. “And some people just want to play with the goats.” For Bisk Education, an eLearning company based in Tampa, bringing goat yoga to its campus was a way to inspire and destress employees. “There is a way to integrate wellness into your corporate programs that makes you a differentiator,” says Chief People Officer Misty Brown. “When it comes to a perk, I want to make sure those investments are memorable. It gives Bisk the reputation as more of a progressive culture.” Boustani calls it an escape experience. “That’s primarily what it is. Yoga in general is kind of geared toward letting go of your everyday worries and trying to come to some peaceful or therapeutic state.” Introducing something so lighthearted to something that many people take so seriously, like yoga, is interesting to watch, Boustani says. “It is nice to see that even dedicated yogis are so open to it.” Yvette C. Age-Defying Bodywork How to Turn Back the Clock by Marlaina Donato

I

t has been said that stress kills, and it often can be a slow and premature process, leading to common but avoidable symptoms of decline: impaired memory, loss of mobility, fatigue and decreased libido. Good nutrition, getting enough sleep and staying active contribute to vitality; however, fortifying the nervous system is critical to combating age-accelerating stress hormones like cortisol. The key to keeping body and mind young may lie in the therapeutic modalities of bodywork, an umbrella term for up to 350 methods that include massage, energy work and meridian-based therapies like acupuncture, shiatsu and reflexology, which can improve quality of life and promote cellular integrity. Once considered a luxury confined to spas and private home sessions, bodywork is moving into the medical mainstream with reputable hospitals like the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in New York City, which offers reiki sessions and instruction for patients and caregivers. According to a survey by the American Hospital Association, reiki and its close cousin Therapeutic Touch comprise one of three top complementary therapies in American hospitals, along with massage therapy and music. 24

The Arthritis Foundation recommends massage for all types of arthritis and pain syndromes like fibromyalgia, as it can reduce discomfort and stress.

The Chemistry of Premature Aging Busy lives without enough downtime can set up the body to be in a chronic state of “fight-or-flight”, which compromises cardiovascular health, nutrient absorption, waste elimination and immunity. Thanks to groundbreaking researchers like Nobel laureate Elizabeth Blackburn, it is now understood that prolonged daily stress weakens DNA structures by shortening chromosome-protecting telomeres, a major component in premature cell death and the trigger of genetic, predisposed markers for disease. Studies by Dr. Owen Wolkowitz, of the University of California, San Francisco, demonstrate the link between shortened telomeres and insufficient response to free radicals, resulting in chronic inflammation, now believed to be the catalyst of most degenerative diseases. Psychological stress, according to research published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by

“Reflexology, a modality that is separate from massage therapy, reduces the tension, stress and pain that we hold in our feet and in the rest of our body, which can promote longevity and better quality of life,” she says. Certified craniosacral therapist Margaret Connolly, of Narberth, Pennsylvania, agrees that mental or emotional strain plays a key role in the aging process. “During stress, the body is primed to resist or escape a threat, and in that situation, it’s not going to prioritize restorative activities,” she says. Craniosacral therapy (CST) focuses on the cerebrospinal fluid and the meninges surrounding the brain, spinal cord and related connective tissue, and helps the body drop out of excessive fight-or-flight mode.

Pain, Serotonin and Substance P Bodywork and its ability to impact the chemistry of stress has far-reaching effects on most bodily systems. Studies in 2016 from the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine have shown that massage therapy helps to regulate hormones, boost immunity, improve attentiveness and ease the symptoms of depression. Licensed Massage Therapist Michele Duncan King, of Sea Spell Massage, in Cannon Beach, Oregon, knows

Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, changes how the body regulates inflammatory response. “Stress and inflammation cause pain and disease,” says Certified Reflexologist and holistic practitioner Martha Garland, of CreativeSpirit Healing Arts, in Baltimore. “All of this that we carry in our bodies will make us feel much older than our years.” Through application of pressure on specific reflex zones on the feet, hands and ears, reflexologists like Garland can help promote the natural flow of bodily functions.

firsthand how her work can assist in counteracting the energy-sapping effects of stress. “When the digestive system doesn’t go into the ‘rest-and-digest’ state via activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, it can affect muscles, joints, organs and hormones. This, along with elevated cortisol, can certainly make us function less optimally, making us feel older and less vibrant.” Traditional massage modalities such as Swedish, deep tissue, Thai and Lomi Lomi help reduce blood pressure, boost immunity by augmenting natural killer cells, decrease symptoms of depression and support the cardiovascular system. It can also assist lymphatic movement, which can prevent cold hands and feet and achiness. Massage also raises serotonin and dopamine levels, neurotransmitters that play vital roles in memory, mood regulation and immunity. Most significantly, higher serotonin levels are linked to lower levels of substance P, a neuropeptide that is central in pain perception. It soars during times of stress, anxiety and insufficient sleep, and has also been linked to tumor growth and inflammatory conditions.

Multidimensional Well-Being Bodywork can assist the physical body, but it can also be a restorative balm for the emotions and psyche. “As human beings, touch is so important. Massage modalities invite safe, healing touch,” says Anita Bondi, licensed massage therapist and a founder of the Wellspring Holistic Center, in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. “A good therapist will also educate a client about other benefits of a more holistic lifestyle. I believe any time we give ourselves permission to listen to the body’s wisdom and follow its lead, we reduce stress and increase well-being.” While women are more apt to include bodywork sessions in their health care, men can be hesitant. Connolly encourages both women and men to experience CST and other modalities. “Sometimes men are a bit nervous about being touched, whether the practitioner is male or female. Even when open to hands-on therapy,

some men believe extremely deep pressure is needed in order to be effective.” Not so, says Connolly, who cites the experience of Mark Bertolini, CEO of the Aetna health insurance company, who credits CST with saving his life when he was contemplating suicide and suffering severe neuropathic pain from a skiing accident.

Menopause and Cognitive Function CST can also have an impact on women’s hormonal changes. “Very slight movement of tissues near the pituitary gland can exert a subtle pumping motion on the master gland in a way that will facilitate its ability to produce and release hormones,” explains Connolly. The therapy is sometimes used in conjunction with acupuncture, which also impacts hormones and works on the brain. A 2018 study by Chinese researchers published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine shows neuronal improvement through acupuncture in both cognitively impaired patients and healthy individuals.

Tools for Life Most practitioners believe that deriving benefits from bodywork requires consistency, which can support longevity in unexpected ways. Garland says, “What really makes a difference in reducing chronic stress is consistent stress reduction. One session occasionally will feel good and reduce tension temporarily, but will not make a major difference in reducing stress in the long term.” King agrees: “A massage once a month is my recommendation for ideal overall maintenance, and more frequent sessions for specific conditions or goals.” Research and results confirm that well-being is not a luxury, but a necessity, and puts to rest the idea that bodywork is a guilty pleasure. “The more we do to help ourselves, the better our lives will be as we age,” says Bondi. Marlaina Donato is certified in massage and bodywork, and is the author of several books. Connect at AutumnEmbersMusic.com.

By the following fall, Whelehan's daughter’s brain function had rallied, allowing her to take the ACT and apply to college. Before flying off to her freshman year in Hawaii last month, she traveled solo throughout Southeast Asia—a scenario that seemed impossible less than six months earlier. Her AmpCoil was stowed safely in her suitcase. “I didn’t know about frequency healing before, but I will continue coiling because I feel better, and my kids feel better,” says Whelehan, co-creator of Open Sky Yoga Barn in Redding, which has offered yoga, dance and spiritual counseling for years, and more recently began offering AmpCoil sessions.

What Is Frequency Healing?

GOOD VIBES, GREAT LIFE Frequency Healing Technology Amps Up Wellness by Patricia Staino

“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” ~Nikola Tesla

C

athy Whelehan, her son and her daughter all suffered with symptoms of Lyme disease for years. They sought help from conventional medical providers and medication, and worked with a naturopath to supplement with dietary changes and herbs. For Whelehan's daughter, the Lyme disease attacked her brain—so badly that often she couldn’t get out of bed, and sometimes couldn’t remember her own name. Eventually, Whelehan flew with her to a clinic in Switzerland that specialized in stem cell and other invasive treatments. But the most dramatic changes occurred when they returned from Switzerland on Christmas Eve and found the gift of an AmpCoil waiting under the decorated tree. 26

All matter vibrates at a certain frequency. Many energetic healing modalities are based on the concept that when those frequencies are out-of-tune, our bodies respond by exhibiting symptoms of injury, disease or negative emotion. Frequency healing entrains cells to match the frequency emitted by an instrument or device, putting the body back in harmony. The ancient, old-school methods for doing this include drum circles, Tibetan singing bowls, crystal bowls, gongs and many other sound- and vibration-making instruments. More modern takes on this methodology, however, are based on the “new-fangled” research of Nikola Tesla, Royal Rife and Georges Lakhovsky, early 20th-century scientists who experimented with frequencies to observe how they affected the human body. In today’s high-tech world, many healers have rediscovered their findings, incorporating them into devices that bring a tech-centric approach to sound and vibrational healing. “Rife showed a long time ago that you can vibrate frequencies that will destroy a bacteria or virus,” says Dr. Adam Breiner, a naturopathic doctor at the Breiner Whole-Body Health Center in Fairfield. Breiner uses a variety of frequency healing therapies in his practice, including BEMER, BioCharger and Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy. “We’ve found it helpful with Lyme patients, with people who are fatigued, those who have injuries they want to recover from. We’ve had instances of people with arthritis immediately being able to move their hands more easily, as they stand in front of the BioCharger.” Breiner says frequency healing technologies have a profound effect across the body and the more a person uses them, the more “charged up” their cells will be, as the treatments have a cumulative effect. “Obviously, our cells recharge on their own and you don’t need [these technologies] for that, but at the same time, the sicker you are, the more toxins you have in your environment, the more you burn the candle at both ends, the weaker your cells become,” he says. “Cells that have a lower electric potential tend to be unhealthy cells and that’s when we see symptoms of disease in our bodies.”

AmpCoil The AmpCoil, the wellness tool which yielded such powerful results for the Whelehans, utilizes sound transmission technology to listen to the messages from your body through voice stress analysis. Its BetterGuide App then uses extensive mathematical algorithms to play back your chosen frequency tunes through a PEMF process and a modified Tesla coil. The manufacturers stress that the technology is meant to help uncover and address the causative influences that detract from overall well-being. “Each time you come into it and the more entrained you get, the more in balance your whole bioterrain becomes,” says Whelehan. “It can take several months, depending on how sick you’ve been, but I’ve seen miracles happen all the time.” The device looks like a giant donut and its frequencies reach a four-foot radius, so it is most often placed on the lower belly during a session, although it can be placed on specific body parts depending on the issue being addressed. The process is best known for easing symptoms of chronic illness, including Lyme disease and psoriasis, but the PEMF process has been approved by the FDA to help with fractured bones, depression and anxiety. “I had a college student come in this summer with Bartonella Lyme, the full gamut, even intermittent blindness,” says Whelehan. “She had about five symptoms and in 10 sessions, she was down to zero. It’s rare, but she was down to no symptoms. For some people it can be quick. For people who have been sick a long time, it takes a bit longer.”

BEMER Also based on PEMF, BEMER (Bio-Electric Magnetic Energy Regulation) therapy targets the body’s circulatory system. The device is a mat that can be used to treat the whole body or wrapped around specific body parts for spot treatments. BEMER uses patented frequency protocols to optimize the body’s blood flow by boosting the microcirculation of capillaries, the smallest blood vessels in the body. The technology is used in more than 4,000 medical clinics, hospitals and universities in Europe and has become more common in the U.S. over the past few years. BEMER also was chosen as a cooperative partner for NASA.

“By integrating BEMER technology into human space flight and assisting in the development of next-generation spacesuits, BEMER will promote healthy circulation both on Earth and in space,” says Tracey Scalzi, a licensed BEMER distributor based in Stamford. BEMER therapy is recommended to be used daily for optimum results, but many people feel a difference after just one session, according to Scalzi. She notes that some of the results of BEMER therapy are improved blood flow, nutrition and oxygen supply, cellular waste disposal, improved physical fitness, strength, energy, endurance, sleep management, concentration and relaxation, among others. BEMER therapy aims to improve circulation, nourishing cells, tissues and organs by boosting their oxygen supply and more efficiently removing metabolic waste. Scalzi experienced the benefits first-hand when she fell during a snowstorm and ripped all the ligaments in her leg: “I used the mat twice a day, along with 20+ spot treatments by wrapping the BEMER pad around my leg. The inflammation came to a head in three days and I was black and blue, then three days later I was completely healed and walking like a champ!” BEMER is easy to use, as individuals just lie or sit on the mat for eight minutes, twice a day. The manufacturer even makes veterinary kits for use on pets and horses, to alleviate many conditions similar to those it addresses in humans. Scalzi, who has seen the technology help clients with fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, ADHD, joint discomforts, open wounds and overall detox, has made it her mission to get the word out about BEMER and is particularly interested in its potential for healthcare and assisted living facilities. “I really want to help some of these people,” she said. “If I had the mat when my grandmother was alive, I’m sure she would have lived at least a few more years.” 28

BioCharger Looking like a cross between a disco ball and a blender, the BioCharger is a software-based, mobile- and cloud-compatible, high-voltage, multi-frequency resonant transformer (actually a modified Tesla coil) that transmits pulsed waves of electromagnetic, electrodynamic and photonic energy. In short, it’s a precise, radiant energy field that delivers energy wirelessly to restore balance in the body. The device uses hybrid subtle energy to improve health, wellness and athletic performance by restoring strength, stamina, coordination and mental clarity in a 15-minute, non-invasive session. “When a cell is sick, or not performing well, we know its electrical charge is diminished,” says Breiner. “The BioCharger sends charge through the air to help energize cells and renew their electrical potential. It’s not specifically treating a disease, but rather supplies needed energy to the cells.” The technology targets the subtle energy field found around all living organisms, similar to the energy field recorded using thermal imaging technology. The BioCharger NG produces a customizable sweep of digitally pulsed electromagnetic fields that bathes the body in a field of bio-compatible frequencies, generating bio-photon light via plasma gas spectrum tubes. The body has the inherent ability to selectively absorb the needed frequencies through each cell of the skin, nerves, muscle connective tissues and organs. The patient simply stands in front of the BioCharger for 15 minutes and often feels changes almost immediately. Breiner has observed healing in patients suffering from Lyme disease, other viruses and bacteria, inflammation and autoimmune issues. Additionally, athletes use the device to help muscles and tissues recover faster and some patients use it as an ongoing boost for their cells to maintain energy levels and overall wellness. “When you combine it with some

of the other therapies that we do, such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, altitude contrast training or an IV nutrient drip, it’s just tremendous. When all the cells are working better, they are more receptive to other modalities,” he says.

FSM Frequency-specific microcurrent (FSM) was developed by Dr. Carolyn McMakin in 1995, based on frequencies developed by an osteopath in Canada who was using a machine built in the 1920s. The frequencies used in FSM are electromagnetic pulses run on two channels at the same time. The frequency addressing the condition is put on channel A and the frequency addressing the particular body tissue runs on channel B. There are frequencies that address more than 200 conditions including inflammation, scar tissue, mineral deposits, toxicity, congestion, trauma and many more. “It sounds a little out there,” says Lisa Singley, ND, a naturopathic physician at Natural Health and Wellness in Stratford, who uses FSM to enhance other modalities she offers. “When I first tried it, I had a shoulder injury and my shoulder was like concrete; it was hard as a rock. And 45 minutes later, not only were my shoulder muscles completely relaxed— like I had had a massage—but my whole body was relaxed. I remember thinking, I haven’t been this relaxed in five years.” Singley says that’s the most common reaction from her clients—that they immediately feel calmer and more relaxed. Like all the devices mentioned here, what a patient actually “feels” during a session varies from individual to individual. Some have no physical sensations, whereas others feel a bit of tingling or heat, which indicates the frequencies have identified an area of blockage.

“Some people feel more than others, but the feeling is very subtle,” says Singley. “Because it’s microcurrent, it’s below the pain threshold of your nervous system, so many times people think nothing’s happening; then, after a while, they’ll feel heavy and relaxed. And if you have the correct frequency, shortly after starting, they’ll say the pain feels better.”

The More the Merrier Frequency healing technologies often work best in concert with other therapies. Scalzi says she uses the BEMER mat in combination with all her other services, including body contouring, Reiki and massage, because it often deepens the effects of the other modalities: “I combine just about everything I do with BEMER therapy because the increased circulation helps clients open up and relax, and I can go in and really work their muscles.” Breiner also notes that, in addition to complementing other therapies, these technologies also work well as a general “tuneup,” to maintain energy and keep bodies in balance. “Anything we’re doing—nutrients,

herbs—the body is going to be more accepting of it if the cells have their charge.” Perhaps most importantly, these practitioners all noted that frequency healing technologies are meant to be one tool in an overall wellness routine—they are not substitutes for smart decisions about diet, activity levels and self-care. “You do have to do other things…you have to be very mindful of what you’re eating, and make sure you’re hydrated,” says Whelehan. “It’s not like you just put the Coil on and everything’s going to be okay. But it helps you start paying more attention to what’s going on in your body, because you become more sensitized. “At the end of the day, these devices are the medicine of the future because they allow people to take their well-being into their own hands and be empowered.” Patricia Staino is a freelance writer and editor living in North Carolina, who is also the managing editor of Natural Awakenings’ Fairfield County/Housatonic Valley and Greater Hartford editions.

hat are we to make of such a declaration as above, especially coming from a spiritual giant who saw angels and spoke of “seeing the world in a grain of sand...and eternity in an hour.” It seems strange that someone with such a deep and mature spirituality would bring our attention back to the physical body as a means of connecting with our soul. Many of us grew up hearing religious stories, somewhat suited for children, about God in heaven, doing good, being bad, being pure. Then, getting older and looking for something more real, we may have become interested in another religion, chakras, guides and so on. A list of spiritual priorities for a modern non-religious American would likely suggest that we align with our values, our subtle bodies, our higher self, our heart or charitable work. Aligning with our bodies would probably not be on that list, but is

Fairfield County/Housatonic Valley Edition

this realistic? Is it possible in this moment to choose what we will align with, without first aligning with our bodies and moving in the direction of a more embodied, unified presence, and away from the influence of the disparate conditioned impulses of the head, emotions and instincts? While most of us start aligning with our bodies by a “top-down” process of placing our attention on our bodies functioning, often in dance, music, sports, yoga or meditation, we may glimpse living in a deeper level of ourselves. This is often an exhilarating opening of the door to consciousness, which might be defined, perhaps inadequately, as attention without content, or awareness of awareness. It may include a surprising sense of how and who we were as children long ago. For some, drugs are a part of this opening, though that can sometimes come with its own complications and confusion.

This is a significant deepening of our relationship with our body. We move from feeling our bodies functioning to being embodied. It is much more profound than good muscle memory. The journey from these first experiences of grace, to longer periods of embodiment, to living a fully embodied life, is usually long. It helps enormously to have a “physical” practice to return to, such as music, martial arts, bodywork, dance, somatic meditation, yoga or active, heartfelt service to others. But these practices don’t necessarily lead to an embodied life. They can lead to highly skillful action, where the effort and a refined attention is on the action being taken. Whereas in an embodied state, there is no effort in the action, only a soft gesture of one’s inner attention towards remaining embodied. The good news is that the journey to fuller embodiment is becoming much quicker, thanks in large part to the work of Stephen Porges, the author of The Polyvagal Theory, and Peter Levine, the creator of Somatic Experiencing, a gentle somatic therapy for healing trauma, and author of In an Unspoken Voice and Waking the Tiger. Many therapies are being influenced by their work, becoming more effective by promoting the sense of safety that comes with the ventral vagus nerve, part of the parasympathetic nervous system. This allows the social engagement system to come “on line,” allowing for deeper connection to one’s own experience and to other people. Once you identify and experience what an improved vagal tone feels like and its relationship to healing, it gets harder to not see its influence in yourself and others. It opens up a natural generosity and compassion towards the self that is soon directed towards others. WHOLE BODY VIBRATION

D

A Conversation with Dr. Anthony Piana

r. Anthony Piana was an athlete most of his life, but when he turned 40, he was diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension. After six months of medication, he decided to trade in the meds for a lifestyle of wellness. Today, Piana travels the world educating people on wellness and thermography, as well as his “7 Steps to Wellness Program” that helps patients with a variety of disorders including ALS, MS, diabetes, shingles, cancer, back pain, headaches and more. He recently spoke to Natural Awakenings about the benefits he’s seen in his patients who undergo whole body vibration therapy.

Q: What is whole body vibration? Typically, a patient stands on a vibe plate that sends vibrations through the entire body. Results include moving stagnant lymphatic fluid, improving circulation and re-training proprioception and postural neural connections. It can also improve strength in the muscles of posture and whole-body musculature. 32

Q: How do you use it in your practice? I’ve performed this therapy in my office for the past 12 years. It’s interesting to witness the effect on lymphatic system heat via infrared thermographic imaging. Areas of circulation, in both the circulatory and lymphatic systems, can become blocked through injury, weight gain, aberrant biomechanics and other factors. It may be difficult to restore proper circulation and lymphatic flow after restriction has occurred. Full body vibration therapy can be used to open lymphatic channels to move stagnant fluid through the system. I recommend five to 10 minutes daily with comparative thermal studies after six months.

Q: What happens during a typical session? What can a patient expect to feel and experience? The patient remains on the vibe plate for up to 10 minutes, according to their tolerance. At first the vibration may seem

Fairfield County/Housatonic Valley Edition

eNaturalAwakenings.com

overwhelming, but it is easily accommodated over time. People with vision trouble may feel intense vibration in their eyes. This usually diminishes as sessions continue. Full body vibration is more about full-body wellness than healing a disease; however, most disease symptoms could be improved by the increased circulation and lymphatic flow. I have seen it result in vision improvement, postural correction, improved respiration, clearer thinking and most of all improved confidence of mobility in the elderly.

Q: How does it enhance other healing modalities in your practice? I have always combined whole body vibration with other treatments. I first started using vibrational therapy to make permanent postural changes in my chiropractic patients to help them maintain the effects of their adjustments longer. Over the years of using this modality, I noticed people’s chronic sinus infections improving, as well as many other conditions.

Q: Who is a good candidate for this therapy? I believe everybody should use vibrational therapy. I personally have compared whole body vibration with trampoline use, and I have seen a big advantage in outcomes with the vibration systems. There are many home units available on the internet for an affordable price, so visiting a practitioner may not be necessary. However, I recommend getting a full-body thermal image prior to the first treatment, to identify areas of stagnation and to use as a baseline to compare with future studies, preferably after at least six months of therapy. Dr. Anthony Piana is based in Connecticut and maintains a consultation practice at DrPiana.com.

Jenny Odell on the Importance of Doing Nothing by Julie Peterson

enny Odell, a visual artist and writer based in Oakland, California, is known for her creative use of second-hand imagery from Google Maps, YouTube, Craigslist and other online sources. Her work has been exhibited locally and internationally, and was featured in Time LightBox, WIRED, The Economist and The Atlantic. Odell, who has been teaching internet art and digital design at Stanford University since 2013, says she is compelled by the ways in which attention (or lack thereof) leads to consequential shifts in perception. Her new book, How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy, proposes that we use our attention to rebel against the seductive pull of 24/7 availability and manipulation by algorithms. She tells us that redirecting our attention toward nature allows us to gradually remake our lives and forego the mentality that tells us that we must have a constant return on investment. True productivity, in the end, may very well be connected to our role in the environment and our understanding of happiness, and to make those connections, we must put our attention to doing nothing.

What is the “attention economy” and why do you believe it’s important to resist it?

The attention economy includes anything designed to capture and direct human attention. The entire history of advertising has been about exploiting attention. But the attention economy takes on new dimensions with something like social media, whose notifications, pop-ups and design are aimed at keeping someone on a platform…[contributing] to a general feeling that one needs to be always on… participating… available. Someone who participates deeply in the attention economy is liable to be kept in a loop of anxiety, fear and shallow reaction. Ironically, this feeling drives them back toward the attention economy, creating an unhealthy spiral of attention that could be more meaningfully directed elsewhere.

What inspired you to rethink conventional wisdom about productivity, progress and the mentality that we must have a constant return on our investment—including how we spend our time and where we direct our attention?

Right after the election, in late 2016, a warehouse fire in Oakland claimed the lives of many artists. I became aware of how difficult it was becoming to step away and process anything, not to mention mourn. I found that it was only by stepping away that I was able to ask questions about what it was I really wanted and how I could act meaningfully. Both social media and the cult of productivity are seductive, and when we’re caught up in them, we don’t question them. Understanding anything requires perspective and standing outside of it; productivity is no different. Temporarily ascending to a broader, removed view, you might find that you’re struggling in all the wrong ways, or in the wrong direction.

How is “doing nothing” different from meditation? It certainly shares some of the same goals. But whereas certain forms of meditation emphasize physical stillness, “doing nothing” for me includes things like wandering and observing.

What is the relationship between our well-being and being unproductive for a part of each day?

When we’re caught up in the idea of productivity, we’re often not thinking about our own well-being. And yet, the “unproductive” part of one’s day is likely the one in which you remember to take care of yourself or even listen to the needs of your mind and body at all.

How do we go about challenging the forces that are disconnecting us from nature and each other?

I think the first step is simply a movement of attention. Addictive as social media may be, it is not difficult for me to move my attention from that to what is happening in physical space. Sometimes this leads to meeting other people; I’ve had great conversations with strangers when we were both peering up at the same tree, looking at the same bird.

What do you hope people will take away from the message of your book?

I hope it creates a space in which someone might begin to look at the ways they currently direct their attention and how they might want to change that. I also hope it helps people find each other. Rediscovering one’s bio-region or local history is a great way to meet others who might not exist within your social media bubble. Julie Peterson writes from rural Wisconsin. balance their hips and body so they don’t cause further injury by compensating. Structural Energetic Therapy can help these tendencies toward imbalance. It has helped many people in acute and chronic pain rehabilitate back into balance. It helps them take control of their bodies so the pain doesn’t control them.

What is it?

A Body in Balance Remains So Structural Energetic Therapy Repairs Core Distortions

I

by Melisa C. Kimball

t’s all about balance! If a vehicle’s tires are out of balance, they don’t wear evenly on both sides and the car can’t reach optimal performance. Same thing with the human body: If one side of the body is out of balance, then other parts compensate for the imbalance. Ninety percent of the conditions we suffer from today are from core distortions, including scoliosis, plantar fasciitis, low back pain and knee pain. A core distortion is when the top of the left hip rotates forward more than 15 degrees, and the top of the right hip rotates backward. As we go through life, each one of us experiences events that cause physical, mental or emotional stressors. These stressors affect the body in fascinating ways. They can cause a structural collapse in the body as well as an emotional collapse or a physical collapse. Stressors are felt in the body as pain, pulling or feeling “off ” or out of balance, which can be difficult to describe and put into words. A lot of athletic people experience injuries caused by an out-of-balance pelvis. They usually believe they just “need to get stronger” to get past the injury. In fact, what they need is to 34

Structural Energetic Therapy (SET) was developed by Don McCann in 1978. He combined kinesiology and muscle testing, postural analysis, cranial structural techniques, directed myofascial unwinding, emotional energy release, acupressure, scar tissue and adhesion release, deep tissue therapy and other therapeutic bodywork techniques. These all integrate into SET. SET therapists first attend massage school to become licensed massage therapists, then undergo a one-year SET training with extensive hands-on supervision and a certifying process. Most SET therapists have years of practice in the massage field before moving on to SET training. What sets Structural Energetic Therapy apart from other modalities? • The integration of cranial/structural releases, which initiate the unwinding of the structure of the core distortion into long-lasting balance to provide structural support (this differs from craniosacral) • Specialized myofascial soft tissue protocols that release myofascial holding patterns, scar tissue and adhesions that maintain distortions and cause pain and dysfunction • Energetic healing techniques that release energetic and emotional blockages that create pain, distortions and dysfunction Cranial/structural differs from craniosacral because the main focus of cranial/structural is restoring structural balance throughout the body. This is accomplished by releasing the soft tissue restrictions within the cranium that maintain the imbalanced distortion of the cranial motion. The release results in an expanded and balanced cranial motion. Craniosacral therapy typically does not release the soft tissue restrictions, so there may not be long-term structural change. The ultimate goal of SET is to be able to resume normal activities pain-free. As your structure integrates into balance and support and away from habitual dysfunction, you will start to use your body more fully in your normal day-to-day activities. Anyone who wants to feel better from head to toe, and who wants to experience the peace, love and joy that are possible with maximum rehabilitation from pain and limitations, can benefit from Structural Energetic Therapy. Melisa C. Kimball is a structural energetic therapist with offices in Brookfield and Westport. For more information about SET, contact her at 203-733-2258 or Melisa@YourStructuralBalance.com.

Universal Laws of Alignment

It’s Your Choice Whether to Survive or Thrive by Berta Provosti

O

ften in yoga class, when students repeatedly find it difficult to hold a pose, the teacher may suggest that if they are having a difficult time finding balance in the asana, perhaps they ought to reflect on the imbalances in their own lives. How can we find a universal sense of balance and align our chakras and stars so we can finally be one with the universal laws that guide us? The Universe tells us its own story as to how it was created and from what it is built upon. It shares with us that everything is energy, including us. All of our thoughts, words, feelings and actions are energy. Within energy there is a natural order and a Universal structure. Energy moves in a circular fashion so what goes around, comes around. Each type of energy has its unique patterns, cycles and rhythm. To assist with the construct of the Universe, there are Universal Laws, which are the principles and structure that facilitate order, co-creation and manifestation. Universal Laws are immutable. They are the means by which we continue to exist and can thrive, rather than merely survive. As we learn how to honor, respect and integrate the principles of the Universal Laws, we can truly claim and create prosperity and abundance within all aspects of our lives. Although it may seem daunting to conceive of, the answer is simple and magical:

• Do what is in front of you. • Be kind to yourself and to others in mind and in action. • Be present and participate. Listen to the Universe as it speaks to you throughout your entire day. It speaks to you through your body and every inspiration in every moment of every day. It will guide and support you in aligning yourself with balance and peace. The Universal Laws are a road map for how to harmonize, integrate and align all aspects of your life with your Higher (Divine) Self and Highest Order. It is essential that you understand how to do this within your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies of consciousness so you can thrive and manifest what you truly desire. The Universal Laws are there for us to utilize. They are not only the framework to create from within as well as chart our roadmap to manifestation; they are also our gifts from the Universe. Be willing to receive them and consciously choose to use them; it’s your choice whether you want to just survive or abundantly thrive. The Phenomenal Lightness of Being by Celeste Mattingly

S

ix thousand years ago, the Vedic religion named Tachyon particles mondajava—"the stuff the gods are made of ". Tachyons are subatomic particles that travel faster than the speed of light. In our Einsteinian worldview

(the standard model of particle physics) Tachyon particles are hypothetical because, according to Einstein, nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. As Tachyon technologies are quite popular in science fiction writing, one might falsely

conclude that anything traveling faster than the speed of light is fantasy. However, in a quantum physics worldview, Tachyon particles not only exist and travel faster than the speed of light, but they infuse physical matter with Spiritual Light, also known as energy, light and information. They are subtle energy and considered by some to be the very source of the frequencies of the chi or prana—the life force existing around us at all times. Tachyon particles are not frequencies; rather they act as the bridge between all frequencies and their source, which is located at the zero-point energy field, or the ground of all being. A Tachyon chamber is a uniquely designated area or room, designed to emit Tachyon energy at very high levels. An individual participant is surrounded by the energy of highly concentrated Tachyon particles, temporarily suspending all negative influences, such as electromagnetic fields (EMFs), air pollution, pesticides, GMOs, chronic stress and negative emotions. Physicists identify this as a zero-point energy field. Tachyon-Living products are everyday household products and spiritual healing tools that have had their sub-atomic nuclei permanently altered by being infused with Tachyon particles.

Infusing products with Tachyon particles is an operator-impartial, highly concentrated intention—a streaming process that requires special steps and preparation. In the chamber, an individual sits in a zero-gravity chair or lies on a massage table, surrounded with Tachyon-Living products, under the Tachyon-Living copper-pyramid-andcrystal generator. They are enveloped in sacred-geometry and tachyonized material, and listen to specially prepared music with a noise-canceling Bose headset. They wear an eye mask with Tachyon disks sewn into it, and the tachyonized chakra disks are strategically placed on their body; they hold a three-metal alloy Tachyon-Living power rod in each hand throughout the session. Sessions are timed with the specially prepared musical tracks to be 30, 45, 60 or even 90 minutes long. It is generally recommended to have at least five or six 30-minute sessions, then clients can continue utilizing the energy for healing with products available for purchase. Clients have reported experiencing everything from simple deep relaxation to an enhanced sense of well-being, from an increase in connectedness to Source to an out-ofbody experience. Most notably, one client reported normal blood work the day after her first session. She was crying with gratitude when she called her practitioner because she had been battling early stages of a rare blood cancer—and after her session the signs of it were gone. In general, most everyone experiences vibrations and pulsing from the disks and the rods during their sessions. By the fifth session, clients report improved quality of life, including more energy; decreased overall pain; and an increase in gratitude, connectedness, self-confidence, mental acuity, balance, grounding, sense of direction, creativity, follow-through with self-care and perseverance in career and life goals. Kirlian time-lapse photography has proven that exposure to Tachyon energy reduces entropy. There are YouTube videos depicting the decay of fruits and vegetables as substantially reduced. Thus far, scientists and serious Tachyon enthusiasts have only been able to document this benefit because of the quantum (observation-dependent) nature of this technology. However, many practitioners post the following disclaimer: “Tachyon chamber technology and tachyonized products have not been evaluated by the FDA; this service is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.” Proponents of Tachyon technologies view their energy as an accelerated healing opportunity, as well as a way to assist the evolution of our species to homo-luminous beings. Celeste Mattingly hosts monthly Tachyon Field Days for those who are interested in experiencing a Tachyon chamber. For more information, visit CelestialEmpowerment.com. Healing and Helping Orthopedic Injuries by Ariana Rawls Fine

D

id you know we can utilize complementary techniques, tools and resources to help orthopedic injuries heal, whether they require surgery or not? There are ways to strengthen the body with bodywork, nutrition and muscular strengthening or manipulation to proactively avoid injury. “First and foremost, it is important to keep our joints moving as soon as we are physically able,” says Michelle Quigley, who practices advanced orthopedic massage and biodynamic craniosacral work in her Weston-based practice. “When we become ‘stuck,’ it becomes a pattern of tension. By bringing a client’s body back into balance and teaching them techniques to maintain that balance, I can help them stay away from recurring injuries.” In orthopedic massage work, there is a constant assessment while working on a client as Quigley releases the tight muscles and encourages the long muscles to go back to their normal lengths. For example, a lot of back pain can be caused by continuously sitting, sleeping in the fetal position or otherwise not working this set of muscles. The gluteal muscles 38

weaken because they are being used less. The lower back muscles then are overworked when the gluteal muscles aren’t activated and firing efficiently. Another example deals with scar tissue after an injury or surgery. The fascia gets increasingly thicker the more it doesn’t move. Since scar tissue lies down along the line of motion, we need to keep moving the joint, otherwise the scar tissue is haphazardly laid out with an immobilized joint, Quigley says. If someone comes in with an old strain or injury, massage can still help by working the muscle and then treating the microtear with multidirectional friction, contracting the muscle and lengthening to help scar tissue lay down in the correct line. Patients can also learn to strengthen and stretch at home to bolster the effects of the release gained from the massage treatment. “So many symptoms of nerve-related diagnoses are caused by nerves that can’t glide or slide freely due to muscle or joint compression or restriction. Massage techniques, combined with gentle cupping, can free up the tissue surrounding the

nerve—like unblocking a garden hose,” explains Quigley. From an orthopedic perspective, there may be little or no meniscal damage evident on an MRI for a knee injury, for example. However, the joint above and below affect the functionality of how everything is working together, says Dr. Perry Perretz, a Georgetown-based osteopath. He uses osteopathy, acupuncture, prolotherapy and neurotherapy in his Advanced Pain Solution practice. The pain could be caused by muscles recruited by the nervous system to work harder because of microtears. One of the treatment options Perretz uses for this issue is prolotherapy, a simple injection of sugar, which creates a distress signal to the body. When we simulate that trauma with the injection, the body reacts with inflammation, which is critical to the healing experience. Perretz points out that prolotherapy usually is best for those who are past the acute injury stage. The protocol is to locate the weak spots and inject them with sugar to trigger healing properties; it is a short visit with a couple of weeks in between visits to let the body heal. “The osteopathic philosophy is about the body knowing how to heal itself; our job is to find what it needs,” says Perretz. “If the bone underneath is already scarred, the blood can’t efficiently get to the cartilage. Sometimes a surgery goes well at the level of the prosthesis but not so well at the suture area or the surrounding areas. A patient may not be healing well. Or maybe the general anesthesia worked well but the local may have worn off sooner, instigating a local trauma. Using neurotherapy, we can re-anesthetize the scar tissue to help reduce or eliminate leftover chronic pain. In essence, we shut off the signal that the hurt tissue is sending by resetting it.” The business of healing is complex, says Dr. William G. Cimino, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle reconstruction at Beach Road Orthopaedic Specialists and

Physical Rehabilitation Centerin Fairfield. He stresses how powerful an effect simple changes in basic behaviors can have on our health; if our bodies are physiologically better, we will heal better from orthopedic traumas. "We need to look at how we manage our time to create space for diet, exercise and family. A mindset of healing influences our ability to heal as well," he explains. Cimino encourages good nutrition, including a multivitamin and close to 2,000 mg of vitamin C, which helps with collagen production and repairs, every day for healing orthopedic injuries. Many physicians recommend 2,000 IUs of vitamin D for general orthopedic health; the vitamin also helps with calcium absorption. “One of the biggest impediments to orthopedic healing and maintenance is smoking. Among other issues, smoking inhibits vitamin C absorption. This can lead to a five-fold increase in complications from surgery, and wound healing is a big concern for smokers,” says Cimino. “[Smoking] has been shown to adversely affect bone mineral density, lumbar disk disease, the rate of hip fractures and the dynamics of bone and wound healing,” said researchers Scott E. Porter, MD, and Edward N. Hanley, Jr, MD, in a 2001 study published in The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Since the process of healing begins with inflammation, anti-inflammatory medications, such as prednisone and methotrexate, can suppress the healing process and the immune system’s ability to fight illness, says Cimino. Diabetes and even genetics can also determine how efficient the healing process will be. Dietary changes, such as eliminating gluten, may be suggested for those who experience inflammation, feelings of malaise or pain from certain foods. “We need to remember that the physiological process of healing takes time. Those realistic expectations, a more positive general frame of mind, contentment with our social situation and other factors can help support our healing,” says Cimino.

Osteopathic Medicine for Health and Longevity

M

by David Johnston

ost people desire to live a long life, especially if the quality of that life is healthy and vital. With our modern advancements in science and technology, particularly in the fields of osteopathy, nutrition, functional medicine and anti-aging medicine, we now know several things that can help a person avoid diseases of aging and have a better chance at maintaining their longevity. Osteopathic medicine was discovered in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still, who was a frontier physician who realized how ineffective and dangerous medicine and surgery were in his day. By spending time in nature and studying anatomy in extreme detail, he realized how the body’s structure and function were related. Osteopathy treats the whole patient and addresses the underlying causes of pain and disease. The first osteopathic school was opened in 1892 in Kirkville, Missouri. Today there are 38 schools across the U.S., and more than 100,000 osteopathic physicians in practice, with many in rural and 40

underserved areas. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) complete four years of medical school and additional residency training, like their MD colleagues. They are licensed to practice medicine and surgery in all 50 states. In addition, DOs receive extensive training in osteopathic and anatomical structural diagnosis and treatment. Some osteopaths practice a gentle hands-on treatment called OMT (Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment). This helps to align bones and soft tissues and allows nerve, arterial and lymphatic circulation to restore vitality and healing. Osteopathic concepts are quite holistic in nature and emphasize the following principles: • The human being is a dynamic unit of function • The body possesses self-regulatory mechanisms, which are self-healing in nature • Structure and function are interrelated at all levels •Rational treatment is based on these principles

Fairfield County/Housatonic Valley Edition

eNaturalAwakenings.com

Cranial osteopathy is a more advanced healing technique that involves gentle palpation and movement of the bones of the skull, the brain, the dural and fascial membranes, the sacrum and the fluctuation and balance of the cerebrospinal fluid. This enables sutures between skull bones to be released and cranial nerves like the vagus, our major parasympathetic nerve—and in charge of the body’s relaxation response—to become more balanced. Typically, an initial osteopathic visit may last 60 to 90 minutes and involves a detailed medical and structural history from birth to the present of injuries and lifestyle factors like diet, exercise, emotional stressors, supplements, therapeutic stretching and relaxation breathing techniques. Then, gentle head-to-toe, handson osteopathic treatment is performed to diagnose and treat imbalances in joint alignment, tissue texture changes and tenderness. The goal is to alleviate inflammation and tissue congestion, which is the cause of the pain. By releasing fascial tension along nerves and lymphatic vessels and opening up venous and arterial circulation, proper oxygen and nutrients are restored to the tissues, while waste products are removed. This rapidly speeds up healing, reducing pain, improving mobility and restoring normal function and well-being. Also, the very relaxing, cranial-sacral part of the treatment helps to balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic “fight-or-flight” nervous system, allowing old injuries, shock and trauma to be treated out of the anatomy very quickly. Osteopathy can be described as “peeling the layers of the onion,” and it may take up to five or six visits for a patient to feel more significant relief for a pain condition that may have been present for more than 10 years. A classic example is an old injury, perhaps from childhood, like slipping and hitting the back of the head. There may have been a concussion and whiplash that healed in a few weeks. Then, maybe 10 years later, severe headaches and back pain suddenly surface.

All the tests, MRIs and evaluations are inconclusive. The energetic imprint from the shock of the injury is still structurally stuck in the solar plexus, diaphragm and the sacral bone. The dural membranes in the head and tailbone area can hold onto those kinetic forces, blocking the normal flow of circulation in the body. Osteopaths can detect these subtle imbalances and treat them so the body can finally heal. Conditions treated with osteopathy include muscle and back pain, sports injuries, whiplash and neck pain, asthma, sinus disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome, migraines, menstrual pain, concussions, birth trauma, breastfeeding issues, colic and reflux in newborns. There are various therapies and healthy habits that work in conjunction with osteopathic treatment to aid in good health and vitality: Eat a Mediterranean diet: Focus on plant-based foods, nuts and seeds, and drink coffee or tea. Exercise: Regular physical activity can extend your lifespan. Exercising more than 150 minutes per week is best, but even small amounts help. Get enough sleep: About seven to eight hours a night is best; too little sleep may also promote inflammation and increase your

risk of diabetes, heart disease and obesity. These are all linked to a shortened lifespan. Limit your alcohol intake: Heavy alcohol consumption is linked to liver, heart and pancreatic disease, as well as an overall increased risk of early death. However, moderate consumption is associated with a reduced likelihood of several diseases, as well as a 17 to 18 percent decrease in your risk of premature death. Wine is considered particularly beneficial due to its high content of polyphenol antioxidants. Calorie restriction: The link between calorie intake and longevity currently generates a lot of interest. Animal studies suggest that a 10 to 50 percent reduction in normal calorie intake may increase maximum lifespan. What’s more, calorie restriction may help reduce excess body weight and belly fat, both of which are associated with shorter lifespans. Detoxification programs with high-quality supplements and herbs: These are part of a personalized approach to maintaining health. By helping to rid the body of harmful toxins and heavy metals, our overall inflammation and risk of disease decreases. Additionally, by balancing the gut and diagnosing food allergies, our immune system is balanced.

IV (intravenous) nutrition and hydration: Doctor-formulated, custom IV infusions like vitamin C, glutathione, and various amino acids, minerals and B vitamins allow 100 percent absorption of nutrients, boost the immune system, battle fatigue and stress, support anti-aging, improve sleep and overall health, aid muscle recovery, decrease inflammation and treat symptoms of chronic and acute illness. Quite often, we use a combination of all of these therapies when helping someone improve their health. Since health and lifestyle choices vary from one person to the next, treatment approaches need to be tailored uniquely to each patient. David Johnston, DO, is a board-certified osteopathic physician in neuromusculoskeletal medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine, and a Diplomate with the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. He holds additional certifications in cranial osteopathy and practices at The Osteopathic Wellness Center, in Ridgefield (203-438-9915) and at the Breiner Whole Body Health Center in Fairfield (203-371-0300). Spinal Solutions Chiropractic Care Yields Unexpected Results by Marlaina Donato

C

hiropractors are often perceived as back pain specialists, but optimal chiropractic care treats the whole person from the inside-out, starting with the nervous system. This means practitioners can address many conditions that transcend typical expectations. The human spinal column sports 31 pairs of nerves, some corresponding directly to digestive, reproductive and respiratory organs, which might explain why regular spinal adjustments and other chiropractic techniques can be helpful for seemingly unrelated conditions like asthma, chronic headaches, hormonal

imbalances and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. A scientific review of 179 published papers focusing on various non-musculoskeletal conditions shows benefits of fullbody chiropractic treatment for asthma, infantile colic and cervical vertigo. Results are also promising for middle ear infections in children and pneumonia in seniors. Clinical evidence suggests the nervous system is a cohesive factor in achieving overall wellness. “In chiropractic and holistic philosophy, the body is considered a self-healing organism,” explains chiropractic physician and applied kinesiolo-

gist Marc Terebelo, of the Chiropractic Wellness Center, in Southfield, Michigan. “The nervous system controls the body, so issues in the toes or fingers may be caused by spinal issues in the neck and low back. Likewise, bladder and menstrual cycle problems can be caused by injury to the low back or pelvic regions.” William J. Lauretti, a New York Chiropractic College professor in Seneca Falls, concurs with the benefits of holistic treatment. “Chiropractors view the body as an integrated unit, and problems in one area might affect a seemingly unrelated area,” he says. “Most chiropractors have a wide variety of treatment approaches to offer, including advice on nutrition, lifestyle, stress management and exercise.”

Chiropractic and Digestion

It’s worth noting that the nerves that innervate important digestive anatomy— from the salivary glands to the stomach down through the intestinal tract—branch off the spinal cord at various levels of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. “This means that chiropractic adjustments given to [the] neck, mid-back, lower back and sacrum are important to optimal digestive function,” says chiropractor Sean Cailteux, of Exodus Health, in Shawnee, Kansas. In his practice, Lauretti has observed better digestion as a positive side effect to regular adjustments. “I’ve had a few patients over the years who reported improvement in digestive problems after chiropractic treatment of the mid- and low back. In some of those cases, the improvement was serendipitous, because the patient didn’t discuss their digestive symptoms initially, only after they noticed the improvement.”

Chronic tension headaches and migraines can become the norm for too many individuals, but chiropractic care—including spinal adjustments, nutrition advice and addressing emotional causes such as stress and anxiety—can be key in reducing pain and getting to the root of the problem. “Technically, only headaches with a list of very particular characteristics can be properly diagnosed as migraines,” Lauretti explains. “The cause of many cases of chronic, long-term headaches is often from poor function of the muscles and joints in the neck.” These types of headaches often respond well to treatment focused on restoring normal function to the neck, he says. TMJ disorders can cause painful and sometimes debilitating symptoms, including facial and tooth pain and locking of the jaw. Chiropractic treatments often provide reliable relief. “The TMJ is a very important joint in the body, with thousands of neuroreceptors. TMJ involvements can cause headaches, particularly around the ear or side of the head, vertigo, tinnitus and other hearing issues,” says Terebelo. Cailteux notes that aside from experiencing jaw pain and headaches, someone suffering from TMJ disorder may have difficulty chewing, and may experience an audible clicking of the jaw with movement. “Chiropractic adjustments can be particularly helpful, especially when delivered to the TM joint and the neck. Gentle, soft-tissue manipulation of the muscles and tendons of the jaw, specifically the masseter, temporalis and pterygoid muscles, is also a highly effective treatment.” For a true holistic approach and lasting success, Lauretti offers this advice: “Look for a doctor who is willing to work as part of your healthcare team and who’s willing to refer you for specialty care when appropriate.”

Slow Food Takes Root Global Movement on Fast Track by April Thompson

T

he global Slow Food movement is fast gaining momentum, uniting more than 100,000 people in 150 countries with a shared passion for delicious food and a moral conviction about the people and places that sustain it. It satisfies foodies’ hunger for a deeper appreciation and understanding of their meals’ origins, from farm to fork. “The key principles of Slow Food are good, clean and fair,” says Laura Luciano, a board member for Slow Food USA and Slow Food Governor for New York State. “It’s the opposite of fast food, where you are in and out with no idea where your food comes from or the stories behind it.” Fair, says Luciano, means fair to farmers, and paying a fair wage to workers picking and growing food. “Fair also incorporates principles of equity, inclusion and justice. Good means good for the climate, the Earth and us as individuals. Clean means not using GMOs and pesticides in the food,” she explains. Slow Food has its roots in Italy, where food and wine journalist Carlo Petrini took up the cause in 1986 to halt the homogenous fast food chains encroaching on the

country’s rich, diverse food culture. Slow Food USA has taken off since its founding in 2000 with 150 chapters boasting 6,000 members nationwide. Many convene annually at Slow Food Nations, a food festival for all in Denver, to swap stories, share strategies, celebrate victories and of course, break bread together. The backbone of the movement is its local chapters. “Food has a regional identity, connected to history, culture and family,” says Luciano, whose blog Out East Foodie shares the stories of her Long Island edibles. For Bob Quinn, an organic wheat farmer in Big Sandy, Montana, and the founder of the heirloom grain company Kamut International, the Slow Food movement has been a kind of welcome homecoming and acknowledgment of his company’s efforts to protect workers and nourish consumers. “To me, Slow Food is a return to the roots of agriculture and the soul of organic, because it focuses on the food— the end purpose of agriculture—rather than profits and yields that are the focus of the industrial food system,” says Quinn,

We talk about joy and justice. There is the joy in food and the justice and stories behind it. Slow Food tries to marry both of those worlds. ~Laura Luciano author of Grain by Grain: A Quest to Revive Ancient Wheat, Rural Jobs, and Healthy Food. “Slow food offers an appreciation for farmers’ efforts to improve the soil and the nutrition, flavor and aroma of the foods we grow.” The Slow Food movement also connects producers like Quinn with chefs like Steven Satterfield, author of Root to Leaf: A Southern Chef Cooks Through the Seasons and board vice president of Slow Food’s Atlanta chapter. “As a chef, Slow Food to me means honoring your ingredients and going out of your way to get the freshest, most sustainable, seasonal ingredients,” says Satterfield, who came to Slow Food early in his career as a young line cook interested in the provenance of food and protecting its cultural heritage. At Miller Union, Satterfield’s award-winning Atlanta restaurant, all dishes are made from scratch, mainly from farms in the region, to support seasonal eating and local growing. Satterfield’s dishes also feature traditional Southern varieties from Slow Food’s Ark of Taste, a catalog of more than 200 culturally significant foods in danger of extinction. One Miller Union favorite is a hummus made from sea island red pea and benne seeds, an ancient variety of sesame originally brought by slaves from Africa to the South Carolina coast and cultivated in hidden gardens as a staple food. Beyond engaging diners, chefs and producers, Slow Food also campaigns for big-picture policy changes, like farm-toschool programs to introduce fresh produce and get kids excited about healthy eating, says Luciano. “Eating is a political act. The choices we make speak volumes about what we stand for,” says Luciano. “We talk about joy and justice. There is the joy in food and the justice and stories behind it. Slow Food tries to marry both of those worlds.”

n October 4 from 5:30 to 8:30pm, PAWS Animal Welfare Society will celebrate all its volunteers and adoptive pet parents in Norwalk. The Celebration of Happy Tails promises to be an evening of food, drink and prizes, with an opportunity for attendees to share stories, photos and videos of all the pets who have changed their lives for the better. The evening includes appetizers and drinks, a raffle and an auction of tickets to see Jersey Boys on Broadway. Tickets are $75 each, and there also is an opportunity to sponsor a PAWS staff member to attend by purchasing a ticket for them. PAWS is a no-kill animal shelter dedicated to the rescue and adoption of our community’s homeless and abused dogs and cats. The organization rescues and re-homes approximately 100 dogs and 500 cats annually. Many of the dogs faced euthanasia at local pounds and most of the cats are strays and abandoned cats that roam the streets. A portion of the pets that come to PAWS have been relinquished by their owners who are no longer able to care for them. For more information visit PAWSCT.org. elicit an allergic response. They’re present in the dander of all mammals, including horses, rabbits, cows and mice. “Allergies are caused when the immune system cannot discern the difference between a safe protein, such as egg, and a dangerous protein, such as mold, and it starts attacking the wrong ones,” says Barbara Meconis, a registered nurse and owner of Holistic Care Approach, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In the home, these proteins can easily become airborne and cling to surfaces and clothing. They can be carried by people to petfree schools and hospitals, making the proteins difficult to avoid, so for those that deal with symptoms that range from watering eyes to difficulty breathing, allergies can flare up in unlikely places.

Traditional Medical Response

PET PEEVE Natural Remedies for

Allergies to Furry Friends by Julie Peterson

J

essica Martinez, a medical assistant and part-time dog groomer in Rockford, Illinois, was growing her family—a husband, two daughters and a young beloved husky. When their third daughter was born with health problems and an allergy to dogs, Martinez was determined to manage the situation. She cleaned fervently—vacuuming, wiping down hard surfaces, and bathing and brushing the dog every day. Everyone had to wash their hands frequently. In addition, the room where other dogs were groomed had to be thoroughly cleaned after each session. It all eventually became too exhausting, and the husky was rehomed. But there may have been other options available to the family, say practitioners that treat patients with pet allergies. “I personally would rather not recommend that a patient not be around animals, because there are so many health benefits that animals can bring,” says Rosia Parrish, a naturopathic doctor at Boulder Natural Health, in Colorado, and a spokesperson for the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.

Allergen Alert

Some families opt for one of the so-called hypoallergenic breeds of dogs or cats. However, experts at the American Lung Association and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology advise that all warm-blooded animals shed dander: flecks of skin containing proteins that can cause allergies. Additional allergens exist in proteins from saliva, urine and feces. Because proteins, not fur, are to blame, even short-haired or hairless dogs and cats can

“Allergies are one the most complex, unresearched topics,” says Meconis. Because of the general lack of knowledge in the field of immunology, people with allergies may have difficulty finding relief, especially when multiple or severe allergies are present. Pet owners aren’t given many choices. “In the last five years, there is a working theory regarding being desensitized with incremental exposures, but there is no proof,” says Meconis. “Elimination has always been the answer from mainstream allopathic medicine, so if you are allergic to pets, they say, ‘don’t have a pet.’” Parrish suggests that making lifestyle changes may enable some people to keep a furry friend in their lives. Effectively preventing allergic reactions requires limiting exposure to the offending animal proteins. This can mean vacuuming often, using HEPA-grade air filters, removing carpeting, leaving coats and shoes at the door and washing sheets, mattress covers—and the pet—on a regular basis.

Alternative Treatments

At Holistic Care Approach, Meconis is trained in Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Therapy (NAET), a combination of allopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic, kinesiology and nutrition. Treatments are typically effective in as little as one session per allergy. “We reprogram the immune system so that it no longer ‘sees’ that particular allergen as an invader,” Meconis says. “By removing disharmony at the intercellular level, the body stops being so reactive.” Founded in 1983 by Devi Nambudripad, a California chiropractor and acupuncturist, today there are more than 12,000 NAET practitioners and they can be found at naet.com/practitioner-locator. Parrish recommends natural treatments for affected people such as steam showers and baths with thyme, eucalyptus and menthol to help clear passageways, along with anti-inflammatory supplements like boswellia, quercetin, nettle leaf, fish oil and magnesium. “Unless an allergy is severe, I think that living around cats, dogs and other furry animals is a really good thing and brings so much love and sloppy kisses into our lives,” she says. However, for a serious allergic reaction such as asthma, a pet lizard may be in order. Julie Peterson has contributed to Natural Awakenings for more than a decade. Wisdom from the “Wild” by Carrie Brady

I

n common conversation, the word “wild” is often used to describe something that is out of control, uncivilized or lacking reason, but these interpretations are misleading. "Wild" also has many positive connotations, including being in tune with nature, fully present, confident and resilient. All animals, even domesticated ones, retain some “wild” characteristics that provide great wisdom for humans.

Wildly in Tune Wild animals are in tune with nature. As the seasons change, they adjust their routines, such as by storing food for the winter, building shelter or moving to a more hospitable location. Squirrels store nuts, bears find dens for hibernation and monarch butterflies migrate hundreds or thousands of miles every year. Animals’ bodies also adapt to their seasonal climates. Horses, for example,

develop thicker coats in winter and shed them in summer to remain comfortable in changing temperatures. Animals also know how to respond to severe weather. During the recent hurricane, the wild horses in North Carolina did just fine; they know how to band together as a herd and stand with their backs to the wind to ride out the storm. Wild animals are also in tune with their bodies, unlike humans who tend to spend more time in our heads. Wild animals will naturally exercise through stretching, rolling, running and playing; they sleep when they are tired and eat when they are hungry. They know how to keep themselves well. They even choose their food wisely, generally avoiding poisonous berries and plants. As the seasons change, go a little wild. Note what your body is asking for in each season, including different types of foods and environmental adjustments. Watch your pets and note the adjustments they are making; watch the wild animals outside your window to get some ideas for how to nurture yourself and remain balanced in each season.

Wild Confidence Wild animals possess a natural self-confidence borne out of living on their own without human intervention. As the saying goes, “a bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because her trust is not on the branch but on her own wings.” Wild animals generally do not expend their energy worrying about what could happen unless actually faced with an imminent threat. They are fully present and mindful and respond to what is, rather than all the things that could be. Animals, wild and domestic, do what they want in each moment and are willing to ask for what they need if they aren’t able to get it on their own. Watch your dog or cat a few minutes past their usual mealtime. If you haven’t fed them, they will probably try to direct your attention to the food or food bowl. They are asking for what they need. If you don’t give it to them, they will find another way to satisfy their needs, including jumping on the counter to sample your food. Animals prioritize self-care, in part as a matter of survival. Humans can learn to be wild in this way too, trusting in their own strength and asking for what they need.

Wild animals also can teach humans about working together and having healthier relationships. Wild dolphins work together to drive smaller fish into shallow water so they can catch them more easily and wolves often hunt in packs to take down large prey. Predators aren’t the only ones who work together; prey animals can be sophisticated collaborators. Horses organize themselves in herds where they utilize each individual horse’s strengths: Some horses take on the role of sentinel and watch out for predators, some raise the foals, some lead the herd to water. Each member of the herd has an important job. Roles and relationships change over time and animals don’t

eNaturalAwakenings.com

seem bothered by these changes. Humans fret over empty nests, but birds don’t. When fledglings are too big for the nest and ready to fly, the parents encourage them and then take off themselves. Many other animals follow the same pattern;

Wild animals also can teach humans about working together and having healthier relationships. they nurse and train the youngsters, who then head out on their own. Humans going through relationship changes could lower their stress levels by accepting the change as natural rather than expending energy resisting it.

Wild Trust When a wild horse decides a situation is uncomfortable or unsafe, the horse moves to a safer situation, whether that is back

to the herd or away from the perceived threat. Humans often override these same impulses, because they don’t want to offend someone or because they talk themselves out of being “irrationally” afraid, often to their detriment. All creatures have intuitive or instinctive senses. Animals live by these senses, but humans are often conditioned to ignore them because they are not “logical” or explainable. Humans who learn to trust their instincts and live with their wild senses wide open, can discover a whole new world of wonder. Carrie Brady is the creator of Possibilities Farm in Wilton, where she partners with horses in innovative non-riding programs for personal growth, professional development and wellness. Brady recently visited wild horse herds and she, along with several traveling companions, will be sharing their experiences at a fundraiser for the Nokota® Horse Conservancy on November 6. The Art of the Nap Unplugging From Life Without Apology

C

by Marlaina Donato

hildren, four-legged family members, Thanksgiving overeaters and the occasional squirrel on a branch have mastered an art that eludes most of us, and they engage in it without a shred of guilt. Defying our cultural habit of constantly being on the go and embracing the respite can be an active meditation, an invitation to cultivate uncommon stillness. Answering the siren’s call of a nap might very well be one of the most beneficial acts of self-care we can give ourselves. Both body and psyche crave chill-out times for good reasons. Using study subjects ranging from NASA pilots to emergency room staff, curling up for a 20- to 30-minute siesta has been clinically proven to lower blood pressure, boost immunity, improve motor skills and enhance job performance and creativity. Power naps—the short-but-sweet kind—give us the opportunity to nourish the most neglected part of life, the inner life. Rest-fueled “me-time” can be a daily ritual punctuated with both practical and aesthetic inspiration. Choosing a spot drenched in inviting natural light or close-curtained tranquility and reserving a favored pillow, chair or luxurious coverlet can usher in blissful time-out. Adding the presence of aromatherapeutic essential oils like lavender, Roman chamomile or tangerine or a vase of simple fresh flowers can signal the ever-diligent sympathetic nervous system to cut back on overtime. Dropping down into unhurriedness like an anchor into port can prompt deeper and longer breaths and offer us the shameless chance to invest in quality daydreaming. Playing recorded sounds from nature—ocean waves, soft rain or gentle wind in the trees—can set the stage for a satisfying nap. Inviting the resident cat or pooch for a sleep-spell can also effect release of beneficial endorphins. Scheduling a nap into the day like any other appointment not only ensures follow-through, but presents a succulent slice of something to look forward to. Putting the computer on sleep mode and turning off the phone signals the brain that it’s time to recharge. Social media interaction and phone chats can wait. The pursuit of well-being does not need explanation, apology or, most of all, guilt. Pleasant dreams. Marlaina Donato is the author of several books. She is also a composer of healing and inspiring music. Connect with her at AutumnEmbersMusic.com. 62
