Natural Breast Health for Life N
atural breast health and healing are based on two fundamental concepts: the body can heal itself ….and… your health is based on the strength of your immune system. According to leaders in the Natural Health movement like Dr. Oz, Dr. Mercola, Dr. Christiane Northrup and many others, 90% of breast cancers are based on life style and only 5-10% are based on genetics. Keeping the immune system working is the aim of the Natural Health or Integrative Medical Health community. Conventional medical approaches are focused on fixing the problem once it is found. All doctors whether natural or conventional agree that early detection is the key to maintaining or restoring breasts to their naturally healthy state.
The questions are: what are they looking for? What are the earliest indicators that something is compromising your system? And, what do you do about it? The language of the immune system is “metabolic activity,” which reveals itself through “inflammation” and increased “vascularity.” These early indicators, can be seen 8-10 years before mammograms will see a tumor mass. Thermal Imaging, using a noninvasive, radiation-free infrared camera, can show the location and intensity of these indicators, the most reliable signs of a compromised immune-system. With this information a Natural Health practitioner can design a strategy with natural solutions for restoring and fortifying your immune
system to keep your “Breast Friends” healthy. The above questions, and yours, will be answered in a 2 hour workshop: “Avoiding the Business of Breast Cancer.” See ad below.

For all the mothers that raise children, other people’s children, pets, gardens or any other living creature that thrives and flourishes because of your devoted love, please make this coming Mother’s Day a time to recognize and applaud yourself. I’ve always been a working mom, sometimes from home and sometimes not. Recently, I was watching the Dr. Drew show and the topic of “who works harder, the stay-at-home mom or the working mom” came up. This subject, along with “should you be a stay-at-home mom or working mom,” have long been passionately discussed. Who has the right answers? I would say mom knows best. An aware mom innately knows and trusts her own heart and does what is best for her own circumstances. Some women find it unthinkable not to be a full-time mom. For others the thought of not working outside of their home is unbearable. Financial or other survival necessities may leave a mother without a choice. A mother’s life is one of sacrifices and unconditional love and this is the natural ingredient that will nourish our children. Children can feel our love and devotion whether we are working hard at home or at our job. They sense when mothers are fulfilled and happy—and they want what’s best for us too. People will always have differing opinions on the subject of mothering and what is best for our children. Being a mom can be challenging at times. Rather than judging who is right and who is wrong, let’s support the different choices we make as mothers. As I write my letter from publisher, I am further reminded that it would have been my deceased mother’s birthday a few days past. I found myself in an unexpected downpour of emotions when the date appeared on my phone. My mother passed away when I was 13 years old and there was much controversy—even to this day—about who should have raised me. Regardless of all the decisions made, my life evolved and here I am—a happy, healthy woman that I know my mom would be proud of. Housewives, working moms, young, aged, single, divorced, rich or poor— make your best choice and trust it is the right one. Mother knows best. Smiles,
P.S. All moms looking to lose weight and get healthier for life should check out page 14 to learn more about the Be Fit For Life retreat being held on May 20 in Troncones, Mexico.

Mountaintop Meditation Claudia Tremblay
ardiff 101 Main Street invites all to celebrate spring and sustainable gardening practices by attending a free, informative event being held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 5. There will be live music throughout the day as well as delicious treats from local eateries. This year features an all new Kid’s Zone with a seed toss and interactive games. Several local artists will be set up throughout the park with art for sale. Linda Lee, the horticulturalist behind the park, will also be giving informative guided tours of the park. “What was once a vacant lot paralleling the railroad train tracks between Birmingham Drive and Chesterfield Drive has been transformed by beautiful, sustainable landscaping and a trail for all to enjoy,” says Lee. Carpentier Parkway has been featured in San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles, Sunset magazine’s Fresh Dirt blog, and numerous local newspapers. “It serves as a remarkable example of what can be done with a vacant dirt lot to improve and beautify a downtown area,” adds Lee. Spring Fling is also the perfect time to become part of history and sponsor a brick or paver at Carpentier Parkway’s Inspirational Terrace for Cardiff’s Centennial Celebration.
Radiating gentleness and tranquility, the watercolors of artist Claudia Tremblay are rendered in a subtle palette of soft hues and often reflect her fascination with women and children around the world. Tremblay left her home in Quebec, Canada, to work with a nongovernmental organization in Guatemala, where she planted medicinal gardens alongside the native women that had fled their country during its civil war and were returning home to start new communities. With no formal training in art, Tremblay was inspired to portray the strength and spirituality of these hardworking women of the Maya highlands. “I had studied horticulture, and was sent to make gardens with these beautiful women in a hostile land,” she recalls. “In my free time, I tried day after day to capture the magic and melancholic depth of the Mayan people and their land.” After 13 years, Tremblay returned to Montreal, where she continues to create “artwork for the soul.” Her recent series of richly shaded yoga watercolors compellingly evokes a focused, sacred energy. “Love and sensibility are always what I wish to transmit through my paintings,” advises Tremblay. “Let’s all dream a little more!”
n Saturday, June 9 from noon to 4 p.m., Dexter’s Deli presents “Talk to the Animals,” a panel presentation and pet communication event. During the free panel discussion from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., local animal communicators Paula Brown, Jerri Carroll, Sue Goodrich, Lisa Larson and Gina Palmer will tell their favorite stories and discuss how they do their work. Attendees will also learn how to become more in tune with their own animals and learn to communicate with them. The fun continues from 2 to 4 p.m. with quick, 10 minute one-on-one sessions with these well-respected practitioners offered for only $30. Participants may bring their well-behaved pet, though a printed photograph is preferred. A limited number of openings will be available so advance reservations are recommended. Proceeds will benefit SPOT (Saving Pets One at a Time), based in Oceanside, California. SPOT is an all-volunteer 501c3 non-profit advocating for homeless dogs and cats in the North County area who are at risk of euthanasia. Dexter’s Deli is the leading natural pet food market in San Diego County, bringing fresh-food diets and holistic care information to area pet owners since 1996. Sponsorship Program for Women with Cancer
A
Women’s Wellness Center and Naturally To Your Door are teaming up and seeking sponsors to help low income women diagnosed with cancer supplement their treatments with a healthy diet. “Healing Boxes to Her Door” was created as a way to get fresh local organic fruits and vegetables directly to those in need. “This is an incredible opportunity for sponsors to have a direct impact on the health and lifestyle of someone suffering from cancer,” says Vic Curro, owner of Naturally To Your Door. Sponsors will have the option to donate box subscriptions for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months’ worth of produce delivered to the home of a low-income individual suffering from cancer or to the family. The entire donation is tax deductible plus 20 percent of the total cost will be donated from Naturally To Your Door to A Women’s Wellness Center. “Food is the fuel that keeps us healthy,” says Erendira Abel of A Woman’s Wellness Center. “If we can provide low income women with foods rich in protective factors we are contributing to their healing, recovery, their well-being and their life.” A Woman’s Wellness Center is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that provides affordable holistic health services to naturally ease the symptoms of cancer treatment and the symptoms of other degenerative illnesses. Put Your Best Face Forward Safely The Environmental Working Group (EWG) estimates that the average woman uses at least 12 personal care products—including soaps, shampoos, cosmetics and lotions—every day, many of which contain potentially toxic ingredients. The David Suzuki Foundation states, “U.S. researchers report that one in eight of the 82,000 ingredients used in personal care products are carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins or hormone disruptors.” Stacy Malkan, of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, advises, “Beware of bogus claims like ‘certified hypoallergenic’, meaningless marketing terms like ‘clean and simple’, and companies that do not list the product ingredients on their website.” One of the most troublesome additives is paraben, a chemical preservative found in numerous products that mimics estrogen and may disrupt normal hormone function. Others include diethanolamine (DEA) and triethanolamine (TEA), hormone disrupters that can form cancer-causing nitrates and are common ingredients of shampoos, shaving creams and body washes. Various artificial fragrances are among the top five allergens around the world, and can also contain neurotoxins. Triclosan and triclocarban, antimicrobial pesticides used in liquid and solid soaps, are toxic to the aquatic environment and disrupt thyroid function and reproductive hormones. Sodium lauryl and laureth sulfate—detergents common in facial cleansers, shampoos and shower gels—may be contaminated with carcinogens and neurotoxins and can irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory tract.
The EWG also suggests avoiding antiaging creams with lactic, glycolic, AHA and BHA acids; hair dyes that contain ammonia, peroxide, p-phenylenediamine or diaminobenzene, and all dark, permanent hair dyes; nail polish and removers with formaldehyde; and skin lighteners containing hydroquinine. Forego sunscreen sprays and beware of oxybenzone; instead, use products containing at least 7 percent zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Children’s products are not immune, either. Steer clear of play makeup, including lipstick, nail polish and perfume; diaper cream that contains boric acid or sodium borate; baby wipes with Bronopol; and fluoridated toothpaste for youngsters under 2. The EWG’s Skin Deep database (ewg.org/skindeep) provides easy-to-navigate safety ratings for many personal care products and ingredients. Their Quick Tips for Safer Cosmetics wallet guide informs shoppers how to read personal care product labels and make smart choices. Health Focus on Successful Dental Implants
by Dr. Janette Gray
M
by Carey O’Rielly, DDS
G
etting an implant is like having your missing tooth back. Implants are made from titanium, a high noble metal with an excellent track record. Because its electrical field is very similar to the body’s, titanium has low immune reactivity and has been used successfully in joint replacements for many years. People often think zirconium might be preferable; however zirconium is also a metal and has been shown to be less dependable over time. Generally there are four reasons people experience problems with implants:
1 2
Implants are technique sensitive and must always be done meticulously to avoid complications.
Implant design and placement make a difference in how well implants heal as well as how easy they are to clean. A significant factor is whether implant placement is at bone level or extends above the bone. Any gap near the bone may promote an increase in bacteria and thus inflammation, leading to eventual bone loss.
3
Galvanism is a stress reaction between dissimilar metals. Galvanic issues involving dental metals should also be evaluated and addressed before implant placement. This involves a simple procedure done with an FDA-approved device.
4
Implants should be considered no different than real teeth and thus subject to the same dangers, including gum disease. Extensive evaluation should be done to reduce and hopefully eliminate high risk bacteria before implant treatment begins. Dr. O’Rielly is a holistic dentist in Encinitas, CA. A USC graduate, he specializes in safe amalgam removal and comprehensive dental health care. He is giving back to his community by offering a discount on implant procedures through 2012. enopause will affect all women at some time in their lives. By definition it is simply a time in a woman’s life when she has gone twelve months without a period. Peri-menopause, on the contrary, can last a decade or longer, often starting in our early to mid-forties through our early fifties. Many women suffer from some of “The Seven Dwarfs of Menopause.” They are Sweaty, Grumpy, Sleepy, Weepy, Dopy, Itchy and Mopy. All of these symptoms and others are normal symptoms of menopause and are completely treatable with bio-identical hormone therapy. Other hormones that affect weight gain, fatigue and sleep are also evaluated and treated as part of a full evaluation for menopause. The main hormones that are included are thyroid hormones, adrenal hormones and vitamin D. It is critical for a woman’s health and wellbeing that all hormones—including the sex hormones estradiol, progesterone and testosterone—get finally tuned like a great sounding orchestra. Dr. Janette Gray is co-founder of The Center for Health and Wellbeing located at 3636 5th Ave., Ste. 300 in San Diego. The Center has over a decade of experience in bio-identical hormone therapies. Cheese is Better than Butter
D
espite traditional cautions against eating animal fats to keep cholesterol in check, Danish researchers have found that eating hard cheese is better for the arteries than consuming the equivalent number of calories in butter. According to their study, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, when hard cheese accounted for 13 percent of participants’ daily calories, their LDL (bad cholesterol) did not increase. When the same individuals switched to consuming more butter, their LDL levels rose. The researchers were unsure what caused the results, but noted that cheese contains a lot of calcium, which can increase the amount of fat excreted by the digestive tract.

Spotlight on Nutrilys Del Mar and the Company’s Founder, Thierry Lerond by Erin Lehn Floresca
T How beautiful it is to excel, and the goodness of giving from your heart. ~Robert Mondavi

here are businesses that are passionate about their products— and then there is Nutrilys Del Mar —a company that adds a whole new dimension to the word passion. The company, which specializes in marine-based supplements, is fantastically fanatical about several aspects of their products: quality, bioavailability and sustainability. Nutrilys Del Mar may be relatively new in the U.S., but has been highly regarded in France and other parts of Europe for over two decades. In fact, Nutrilys’s founder,Thierry Lerond, is considered a pioneer in marine-based supplements. So much so, that he was invited as a guest speaker at the NATO Operations Medical Conference last October in Bethesda, Maryland to discuss why fish oil was such an important element in the diet of soldiers. “The military has a high suicide rate from those returning from Iraq,” says Lerond. “And study after study indicates that fish oil supplements help combat stress and depression while boosting one’s immunity.” But not just any fish oil. Quality matters to Lerond and it shows. All of Nutrilys Del Mar’s products are backed by more than 25 years of research and many clinical trials. Plus, Lerond personally guarantees his products because he goes directly to the source. “I travel all over the world seeking out the highest quality product,” says Lerond who prefers direct contact www.na-sd.com
“Your body doesn’t know what to do with the synthetics. If you are going to supplement, do it right with superfoods that your body can actually use.” with the fishermen, marine biologists, and others who provide him with the source ingredients for his supplements. “We deal with the ‘caviar’ of marine products,” shares Lerond. “For instance, all salmon has health benefits, but sockeye salmon is like the Rolls Royce, so that is what we use. Even though it might be more expensive, it’s all worth it when it comes to our customer’s health.”
Along with quality, bioavailability also matters to Lerond. “Your body must be able to absorb and utilize the supplements, otherwise what is the point?” says Lerond who notes that around 60 percent of the vitamin and mineral supplements on the market today are synthetic, which means they are counterproductive to one’s health. “Your body doesn’t know what to do with the synthetics. If you are going to supplement, do it right with superfoods that your body can actually use.” Another huge factor for Nutrilys Del Mar is sustainability. The company is strongly committed to being an ecofriendly organization. “We deal with nature, which is very fragile so we have to protect it,” explains Lerond. “We want to harvest the sea, while at the same time protect it.” While the company could have fared well anywhere in the U.S., Nutrilys Del Mar chose San Diego as their home base for a variety of reasons: proximity to the ocean, the mild climate, and being near a population of Americans that choose a healthy lifestyle. Plus, San Diego is home to a large military base. “The military takes health very seriously, and we are able to support them with our products.” In fact, the military holds a special place in the heart of the organization, because that is where the Nutrilys story began. In 1986, Lerond, a trained rehabilitation specialist serving in the French Airborne Special Forces, began researching methods to help his patients heal quicker and prevent future injuries. As a health practitioner, Lerond employed multiple alternative techniques on the hundreds of soldiers that came to him for treatment. According to Lerond, “I was proud to serve my country applying my skills and expertise to help the soldiers to heal more efficiently from their injuries and pain so that they were able to return to their delicate missions strong and in good.” After years of research, Lerond became an expert in nutria-prevention with a special focus on the benefits of marine-based products. “Not being content with just lab research, I began to travel the globe to study my passion at the source,” he says. The company features several programs that are targeted to very specific groups. For instance, Nutrilys Del Mar supports, sponsors and
coaches the Los Angeles Police Department’s Underwater Dive Unit. (LAPD UDU). “It’s a very targeted niche,” says Lerond. “These guys are counter-terrorism experts—they’re stressed out and they need all the immune support they can get.” The support they get is the Military Formula product line which has been proven to combat overall fatigue, strengthen resistance and endurance, boost the immune system, enhance wound healing, help the body recover faster from training, increase resistance to cold environments, and optimize mental health and concentration. Nutrilys Del Mar is also a proud sponsor of Surf Team USA, led by coach Sean Mattison, ISA World Gold Medal Coach (Team USA) former professional surfer, United States surfing champion and founder of Surfcoach USA. Surf Team USA uses the Nutrisurf® line of products specifically aimed at surfers and other water sport athletes. However, one doesn’t have to be in the military or a surfing champion to benefit from Nutrilys Del Mar products. The company features multiple supplement lines that address specific health concerns like sexual health and fertility, fatigue, heart and brain health, healthy pregnancy, osteoporosis prevention, and joint health. There is something for everyone and one thing is for sure—quality is never an issue when purchasing products from Nutrilys Del Mar. Lerond has made it his life’s work to guarantee that! A New Demography for American Motherhood The state of motherhood in the United States has shifted strikingly in the past two decades, according to a Pew Research Center survey. Compared with mothers of newborns in 1990, today’s mothers are older, better educated and less likely to be either white or married. The ideal number of children for a family is still two, as it has been since the 1970s. Pew projects that 82 percent of U.S. population growth through 2050 will be from immigrants that arrived after 2005 and their descendants. A study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology warns that microscopic plastic debris from washing clothes made of synthetic materials like polyester, acrylic and nylon is accumulating in the marine environment and could be entering the food chain. Concentrations were greatest near coastal urban areas. Up to 1,900 tiny fibers per garment were released with each wash during the study. Earlier research has shown that plastic particles smaller than one millimeter comprise 80 percent of environmental plastic and are being eaten by animals and getting into the food chain. Mark Browne, Ph.D., an ecologist based at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a member of the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, advises, “Once the plastics had been eaten, they transferred from the animals’ stomachs to their circulation system and actually accumulated in their cells.” The team took samples from 18 beaches around the globe, including sites in Australia, Britain, India, Japan, Oman, the Philippines, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa and the United States. They found no sample that did not contain pieces of the microplastic. Source: BBC

Great Days for Clean Air
Faith Begets Civic Activism
For nearly 100 years, discharges from two of Edison International’s coal plants have polluted the air over the city of Chicago, exposing area families to dangerous levels of chemicals while adding to the Earth’s greenhouse gases. But the people fought back and won, because the city has quit using coal. For more than 10 years, Chicago residents have been demanding their right to clean air and a safe climate. Now, the Fisk coal plant, in Pilsen, and the Crawford operation, in Little Village, will shut down in 2012 and 2014, respectively. Clean air activists in Ohio and Pennsylvania recently claimed similar victories. Utility provider GenOn will close seven coal plants in the two states, including one in Portland, Pennsylvania, which has been deemed responsible for more than 500 asthma attacks and 54 heart attacks. “These victories are not only for the people of Chicago, Ohio and Pennsylvania, but for local activists all over the country that are working to shut down dirty coal plants in their communities,” says Kelly Mitchell, of Greenpeace, in celebrating the announcement.
The Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project affirms that religiously active people are more likely to engage in civic activities than others. The authors say their findings counter the view that religiously active people are less engaged with the secular world. The report found that 40 percent of Americans engage in some form of religious activity such as going to a church, synagogue or mosque, and feel better about their place in the larger civic community. They tend to be more trusting of others and more optimistic about their impact on their community and are more active in groups. Religious teachings have a component of helping others at their core, points out Eugene Fisher, a professor of Catholic-Jewish studies at Saint Leo University, in Florida. “Civic participation would be a natural result of that push to help your fellow man,” he says. The study similarly reveals a high level of digital participation by religiously engaged folks. Media expert Paul Levinson, author of New New Media, says, “The Internet is an amplifier of all that each of us are in our humanity.”

More Sex, Better Brain by Diana Hoppe
I
t is now estimated there are more than 36 million people in the U.S. over the age of 65 and that many of them will be impacted by cognitive decline and brain atrophy associated with normal aging. Strong evidence indicates that memory and cognitive skills start declining as early as age 50. Studies on aging showed the prevalence of dementia ranges from 5 to 10 percent and that of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) ranges from 12 to 18 percent. This decline in cognitive tasks has a critical impact on the quality of life. Physical exercise has many health benefits including decreased mortality, improved cardiovascular function, and decreased risk of heart attack. New studies have found that with increased physical activity there is sharper cognitive function, less depression, and a higher quality of life. This effect has been shown in older individuals as well as in individuals who complain of memory difficulty. To maintain a high quality of life and protect brain health, more physical exercise is recommended—and wouldn’t having more sex be a fun way to do this? How does having more sex help the brain? With any form of exercise—and let’s face it, sex is a form of exercise—
blood flow increases. The increased circulation of blood transports oxygenenriched blood to the hypothalamus, the center of the brain for memory and learning. A recent review of over 11 studies of aerobic exercise programs for healthy older persons found consistent improvements in thought processing and attention, as well as memory, language and visual-spatial skills. One study done followed over 5,900 women (more than 65 years old) for 6 to 8 years with baseline selfreport exercise measures. Women with a greater physical activity level (miles walked per week) at baseline experienced markedly less cognitive decline compared to those with less exercise. So start making more time for physical intimacy—it will help your heart and your brain! The Hormone Balancing Act Natural Strategies for Feeling Better by Kathleen Barnes
H
ormones rule our lives; it’s a simple fact of biochemistry. In their role as the body’s chemical messengers, hormones affect every human biological system. Without them, nothing works correctly. Women’s hormonal systems are as complex as men’s, although vastly different. They govern reproduction, plus every aspect of health—including metabolizing food, proper immune function, physical and emotional responses to stress and the aging of cells.
Teens and Early 20s
Puberty and the early reproductive years should be the physical peak of a young woman’s life; when she is
physically active and full of energy and youthful health. It’s also the time when breasts develop, hips widen, pubic hair appears, menstruation begins, and she becomes capable of pregnancy. The good news is that several studies by the National Cancer Institute and the University of California, Los Angeles, have shown that regular exercise undertaken at this age results in lower estrogen levels throughout a woman’s life, greatly reducing her risk of breast cancer and other hormonal cancers. Yet, C.W. Randolph, Jr., a leading bioidentical hormone physician and co-author of From Hormone Hell to Hormone Well, reports that the ideal hormonal balance is rou-
Major Female Hormones d Estrogen is produced by the ovaries, adrenal glands and in several other parts of the female body. It is responsible for physical maturation, including development of breasts, regulation of the menstrual cycle and preparing the uterus to receive a fertilized embryo. d Progesterone prepares the uterus for pregnancy, maintains pregnancy and balances estrogen during cyclical fluctuations. 24

d Luteinizing hormone governs the ovaries’ production of estrogen and progesterone. d Follicle-stimulating hormone works in synergy with the luteinizing hormone to control the menstrual cycle and ovarian egg production. d Testosterone is present in women, although in far lower levels than in men. It serves as a component of healthy sexual desire and in maintenance of healthy bones and muscles. www.na-sd.com
tinely upset today. Culprits are obesity among young American women and the everyday presence of toxic estrogenic chemicals in today’s dairy products and meat, personal care products, plastics, food containers, pesticides and herbicides, as well as car exhaust. “These compounds often have chemical structure similar to estrogen and can act like estrogen when introduced into the body,” Randolph explains. “Over time, these substances can increase estrogen in the body, potentially causing problems.” Categorized as xenoestrogens, these hormone disruptors can cause rapid growth in breast tissue and have been blamed for the appearance of breast tissue and even milk production in girls as young as 18 months and the early onset of puberty, particularly among African-American girls. They are also suspected in the rising incidence of breast cancer in younger women today.
Reproductive Years
Women in their reproductive years often experience extreme stress in struggling to balance family, work, relationships and a need for personal growth, along with economic challenges. Women’s health expert Dr. Christiane Northrup, author of The

isn’t between 80 and 90 in the morning, you need to look at your diet and lifestyle. Getting this under control will create hormonal balance in the vast majority of women. It’s so simple.”
Perimenopause
The next hormonal shift overlaps with a woman’s reproductive years. Symptoms of perimenopause, or the start of menopause and the end of childbearing years, typically show up between the early and late 30s. These range from hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia to weight gain, fuzzy thinking and redistribution of hair on the body. Again, the presence of xenoestrogens and stress contribute. Women of other cultures rarely experience the intensity of perimenopausal symptoms that Western women report. So does that make perimenopause a lifestyle disease, as well? Emphatically yes, says Holly Lucille, a doctor of naturopathy, registered nurse and past president of the California Naturopathic Doctors Association. “Diet and lifestyle are absolutely essential to a healthy hormonal system,” which she explains in her book, Creating and Maintaining Balance: A Women’s Guide to Safe, Natural, Hormone Health. “The biochemistry of the body is based on vitamins and minerals. If we compromise food and lifestyle choices, we are not getting the nutrients necessary to have a healthy endocrine system.” Weight gain is a particular concern during perimenopause. In their book, From Belly Fat to Belly Flat, Dr. Randolph and Genie James, cofounders of the Natural Hormone Institute, advocate a specific eating plan to override belly fat and related accumulating effects of excess estrogen. “In perimenopause, progesterone production usually declines rapidly, more than 120 times faster than estrogen or testosterone production. That’s what aggravates the symptoms,” Randolph notes. “Because women in perimenopause are usually still menstruating, they think their hormones are okay.” “The more body fat you have, the more estrogen tips the hormonal 26

5. Stress management, as well imbalance,” says Lucille. “Those fat cells hold on to toxins and place more burden on the liver, making it unable to effectively metabolize those extra estrogens,” which are stored in body fat and brought into the body as xenoestrogens. “At the end of the day, estrogen is a messenger, and its message is to tell cells to grow and proliferate. That’s what we don’t want.” When estrogen becomes dominant, several things happen, including a more rapid release of insulin from the pancreas, which triggers sugar cravings. “It’s not a willpower problem,” Randolph assures. “Too much estrogen causes you to pack on the pounds in the belly area, and belly fat produces more estrogen. It’s a vicious cycle.” Lucille considers perimenopause the opposite of puberty and counsels, “While we are dealing with these changes, bringing some hormones on board for a short time can be a valuable tool.” However, she cautions, replacing anything isn’t the issue. “You have to look at the big picture,” she avers. “Putting hormones into a toxic body is like putting gas into a dirty gas tank. We have to restore function first.” Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) has been a boon for millions. Results of the Women’s Health Initiative, a national study of women’s health between 1991 and 2002, involving more than 160,000 postmenopausal women ages 50 to 79, sparked more widespread use early in the 21st cenwww.na-sd.com
tury, when research began to show the dire consequences of synthetic hormone replacement. The Million Woman Study of British women also found that taking synthetic hormones at menopause doubled the risk of breast cancer for women. Northrup calls bioidenticals “nature’s ideal design,” due to the prescription of individually tailored doses, custom-made by compounding pharmacies.

Randolph, Jr., and Genie James
Menopause
If a woman has had no menstrual periods for 12 months, she is considered to be in menopause. However, Lucille asserts, “Menopause is not a disease.” Northrup touts menopause as the most creative and precious time of a woman’s life; it is often a time of spiritual awakening and self-fulfillment. “When the female brain passes menopause, the brain changes,” advises Northrup. “In a sense, we move from alternating current to direct current; I believe that this is the way the brain encodes wisdom.” “Yet there are women in their 60s that are still having hot flashes. What should they do?” queries Northrup. Natural alternatives exist that are safe and effective. “Many herbs have been used for millennia that have estrogenlike properties, but do not have estrogen’s side effects.” Northrup says. “There is huge confusion about this: Plant hormones have different structures than mammalian hormones and cannot act as growth hormones. If you have too much estrogen, these plant
hormones can actually protect against excess stimulation.” Her favorite is pueraria mirifica, which has helped relieve perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms in 80 percent of her patients within days. (Because the method of harvesting and processing supports effectiveness, Northrup likes Solgar brand PhytoGen.) She also uses maca, from Peru, for its phytoestrogens, vitex, black cohosh and omega-3 fatty acids such as those found in salmon for ongoing hot flashes. “Some women go through these years and truly take their place as women of wisdom and power. They don’t need any additional hormone support; they have enough life energy coming,” comments Northrup. “Others may need to take some kind of hormone support their entire lives. Either way, no one should suffer.” Kathleen Barnes is a natural health advocate, author and publisher. User’s Guide to Natural Hormone Replacement is among her many books. Visit KathleenBarnes.com.

Trained by Elina Fedotova, CEO of Elina Organics and founder of the Association of Holistic Skin Care Practitioners, Handel cautions that techniques intended to move skincare products beyond the outermost dermal layer—such as microcurrent, cold laser, ultrasound and LED—should be 100 percent natural and organic. “Read labels to find the USDA Organic seal and avoid subjecting skin to synthetic chemicals and ingredients that contain petroleum derivatives from crude oil; artificial fragrances, which frequently contain toxic chemicals; and synthetic preservatives such as parabens,” she advises. Common repercussions include:
www.na-sd.com
Whiplash-like injuries. Being jerked around on a leash is one cause of injuries similar to whiplash. Extension leashes add to the problem, because they encourage dogs to pull and to run faster before they reach the end of the line. Ear and eye issues. When dogs pull on their leash, the collar restricts the blood and lymphatic fluid flow to and from the head. Clients are often perplexed when troubling ear and eye issues disappear after they switch from a dog collar to a proper harness. Excessive paw licking and foreleg lameness. Leash pulling can impinge on the nerves in the front legs, which may lead to an abnormal sensation in the feet and cause dogs to lick them.
These dogs are sometimes misdiagnosed as having allergic reactions. Hypothyroidism (low thyroid gland hormone). High rates of thyroid troubles in breeds that frequently pull on the leash, such as Labrador retrievers and German shepherds, make sense when one understands that the collar pushes on the throat in the area of the thyroid gland and may traumatize it. Thyroid trauma can cause low energy, weight gain, skin problems, hair loss and an increased likelihood of ear infections and organ failure. The best alternative to a collar is a harness, with the spot for a leash attachment at the front of the chest. This design distributes the pressure of tugs and jerks throughout the dog’s entire body and keeps the neck and throat free of pressure. Harnesses that have the leash attached on the back are not recommended, because pulling still restricts the front portion of the neck, thereby pressing on veins, arteries, nerves and energy channels. Make sure to properly fit a dog’s harness and carefully follow the maker’s instructions. Ensure that the harness is not pressing or rubbing anywhere and that it is washed regularly. Employ the harness only when leashwalking and take it off when a dog is off-leash. Adequately train the animal so that he can be off the leash as much as possible. A special note: If a dog is considered a puller, have his neck examined by a vet or animal chiropractor experienced in neck assessment. Consider getting his thyroid hormone levels checked and the neck and back ex-
amined for any sign of injury. Keep in mind that many veterinarians are not trained to evaluate spinal alignment, so do some homework to find the right practitioner. After switching your own family to a gentle leash, pass on what you know to others. Whenever you see a dog pulling and choking on the collar, gather the courage to talk to the owner. Everyone will be glad you did. Is it Hormones or something else? by Dr. carolle Jean-murat
A
re you plagued with anger, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, fatigue, hot flashes, night sweats, irregular bleeding, irritability, memory problems, sexual problems, difficulty in sleeping, breast pain, cold intolerance, cravings, heart burn, bloating, or vaginal dryness, etc.? Are you having difficulties in your personal relationships, career or business and not living your life purpose? Have you tried Western, allopathic or other alternative modalities and are still suffering? Were you told that these symptoms were due to PMS, perimenopause, menopause, or that you were experiencing a hormonal imbalance?
What is really happening in a woman’s life? Can all her symptoms be due to PMS, hormone imbalance, perimenopause or menopause? Is it really her hormones? Mary-Ann, a 48-year-old nurse practitioner, was diagnosed with a hormone imbalance because of fatigue, difficulty sleeping, and a low sex drive. She tried many al-
ternative therapies, including natural progesterone cream, to no avail. However, her symptoms of overwhelming fatigue started when she moved to a new town and a new hospital job where she felt that the interests of her patients were not being met. She felt frustrated and inadequate. By the time she came to see me, it was difficult for her to get out of bed in the morning. She was very concerned since all the blood tests by her healthcare provider were normal. Joan, 53 years old, had been working as an office manager for more than 25 years. During her last visit to the dentist, she felt panicky when she sat in the dental chair and had to leave without having the work done. Joan continued to feel anxious, especially at work. She was told that her problems were caused by hormone deficiency. Even though she did not like the idea of taking any medication, she was prescribed Xanax and HRT. This all coincided with Joan being required at work to take on much more responsibility because of budget cuts. What was the common thread? These women’s symptoms started when they found themselves in situations where they felt out of control. Unfortunately, women are usually in family or job settings that do not fully support them. They tend to the needs of others first, with little or no time left for self. Could symptoms be the sign of a woman’s body reminding her of her own unmet needs?

We are spiritual, psycho-emotional and physical beings. When we are confronted with a situation that makes us feel we are not in control of our life, the deeply buried issues will resurface as emotional and physical symptoms—the tip of the iceberg. We cannot simply treat those symptoms. It would be like putting a Band-Aid on a deep wound. Real healing starts with treating the root cause. Only then can we find balance in our life—by living in our hearts, not in our heads. The next time you experience unexplained symptoms ask yourself:

very woman requires a different approach to feeling her best in perimenopause and menopause. Because women have different journeys that often require customized combinations of treatments, many women receive their medications from a compounding pharmacy. Compounding pharmacies specialize in the preparation of medications by mixing raw ingredients to formulate a medication that is made exclusively for a patient based on a prescription from a physician. Traditional pharmacies dispense commercial medications manufactured by a pharmaceutical company. Compounding pharmacies can dispense commercial medications as well as compound medications. All pharmacies (compounding and traditional) are regulated by the State Board of Pharmacies in their respective states. However, no pharmacy is regulated by the FDA. Reputable compounding pharmacies use ingredients that are sourced from an FDA-approved chemical house.
Benefits of a Compounding Pharmacy 34

We are not a “one-size-fits-all” society. Each woman is unique and has specific health considerations as she ages. Therefore, a woman’s treatment must be personalized to address her individual health requirements. Physicians use compounding pharmacies to customize a woman’s prescription to meet her unique health needs. Although there are commercially available bio-identical hormones, they are only available in limited dosages and forms. If a physician’s protocol requires a different dosage form, she/ he will prescribe a compounded medication formulated exclusively for the patient. There are other ingredients that may need to be included and/or combined in a treatment regime that are only available from a compounding pharmacy. For example, Estriol is a bio-identical hormone that is not available commercially.
How to Know a True Compound Pharmacy There is a significant difference between pharmacies that compound and a true compounding pharmacy.
The following are some good questions to ask the pharmacy: 1. Do they have a sterile clean room?
separate ad from organic to you
2. Do they send out formulations to a third party for potency and stability testing? 3. What training does their staff have in compounding? 4. How many years have they been compounding medications? 5. What equipment do they use to compound medications? 6. Do they mill their creams? 7. Are they certified or accredited by their national organization? 8. Ask the pharmacy if they allow visitors. Patients can learn a significant amount about how their medication is prepared by visiting the pharmacy. If you can’t make a site visit, ask for pictures of the lab.

It’s very important to make sure the pharmacy compounding your medication knows what they are doing and formulating in an environment that is conducive to producing a quality outcome. If a pharmacy has its PCAB (The Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board) accreditation, it is legitimate. It adheres to the “Principles of Compounding,” its product’s potency is ensured through formal testing, its operating procedures are regulated and approved, its facilities exceed inspection standards, its lab design and equipment is of highest quality and safety, its personnel is trained properly, it buys from FDA-approved chemical houses, and its physicians prescribe the highest-quality compounds with confidence.

Life-changing Weight Loss Retreat in Mexico by Erin Lehn Floresca
M
ost resorts offer a place for people to take a vacation. And then there are resorts that offer a vacation that can change one’s life. Patrick and Julieta Crosby, owners of the Hotel Troncones in Troncones, Mexico, offer the life-changing variety. The Crosbys, founders of the Be Fit For Life program, create an unforgettable one-to-two week weight loss retreat for guests. This one-of-a-kind weight loss program truly is in a class of its own. To begin with, Be Fit For Life is not a crash diet. “We’re not looking to get people temporarily fit or healthy. It’s all about changing one’s lifestyle,” says Patrick. Be Fit For Life introduces a new way of living to participants in a gradual manner. This is important, says Patrick, because all too often he’s seen people get on a program, get over-trained, and ultimately, drop out. “People quit,” explains Patrick, “their minds and bodies reject the program because it is too extreme.” But not

with Be Fit For Life. It is suitable for all fitness levels because The Crosbys and their staff tailor the program to each individual participant. Another aspect that makes Be Fit For Life stand apart from similar programs is that participants can bring guests—including their beloved furry pals. “We decided at the beginning of designing this program that everybody is welcome. People enjoy themselves more when they can make a vacation out of it,” says Patrick. “Who wants to visit a place like Troncones and leave their family or pets behind? Plus, a group of friends could all go in on a suite and it’s more cost effective that way.” The program itself is simple. Participants learn the basics on dieting, fitness, wellness and nutrition while losing weight and eating delicious, healthy foods. Exercise sessions each day include activities like yoga, cycling and water aerobics. Daily seminars—by expert trainers and speakers on subjects such as diets and motiva-

The accommodations are outstanding as well. The Hotel Troncones is an eco-friendly, beachfront boutique resort. Lodging consists of private bungalows, one and two bedroom suites, and deluxe suites. “Other perks that people can choose to include on their vacation include facials, massages and other spa-like amenities,” says Patrick. “These services are very affordable in Troncones, so participants might get a little spoiled.” Plus, the town of Troncones, a small coastal village consisting of just a few hundred locals, according to the Crosbys “is a magical place.” The town features several miles of unspoiled beaches and the friendliest townspeople. And while it is miles away from it all, Troncones is just 23 miles from Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa International Airport, so getting there is easy. “My approach is simple—I just like to see people get healthy. With Be Fit For Life, I aim to make these changes be a part of each participant’s life forever,” says Patrick. The next program starts May 20 and spots are still available.
