letter from publisher
W
ow! This month’s editorial themes on Living Courageously and Meditation makes my monkey mind swing from limb to limb—and out on a limb, too. First stop is my publisher’s photo featuring me and my dear friend Mags, a talented documentary producer who is the epitome of living courageously. Meditation is a much-needed modality to cope with her career choice, like many of us. Needed down time with my Thankfully, we have wonderful practitioners in town mover and shaker friend and tv producer/director Mags. like Julie Chippendale and her mindfulness classes to keep us on path. And speaking of fabulous practitioners, Michael Mitchell with Body Solutions 101 introduced me to Rolfing and inspired me to revisit the wisdom of the Enneagram. In addition, we have so many amazing networking groups including Carmenza David’s down-to-earth San Diego Business Connectors networking group; Judy Foster’s women’s wisdom group, the RSF network group; ITEX meet-ups with Art Kaliel and many more local groups serving up quite a platter of courageous entrepreneurs. I applaud each and every one of you, mentioned above or not, for delivering San Diego the tools we all need for a healthier life. One thing that’s been on my mind lately is staying physically, mentally and emotionally healthy while aging. Getting older is not an easy task. Neither is letting go of our egos. Often we can’t see our lives for what they truly are until our personal empire collapses. When that happens, we can finally see the wizard. Why is this? As many of us know, it’s really hard work to look into our own private crystal balls. We constantly toggle between the past, present and future. Staying in the present and out of the ego is by far the most challenging of all. It’s why hitting bottom can produce such positive results. It makes us get real with ourselves and remove victimhood from our lives so we can make the changes needed to create a positive difference in our lives. I’ve never liked roller coasters, not as a kid, and certainly not as an adult. When peer pressure got to me and I had to ride, I would only agree to riding on Space Mountain. As most of you know, it’s a roller coaster in the dark. For some reason, riding in the dark was more palatable to me. What I couldn’t see, couldn’t hurt or scare me. I could let go and enjoy the feeling of the ride taking me wherever it needed to go without worrying about what was ahead of me. I definitely look outside the box for reasons and cures. When I find it, I deliver it. I look to our readership and all our advertisers to help support alternative health. Next month look for our newest section devoted to caring for our aging population. The Baby Boomers aren’t exactly booming. Many of our senior citizens need our attention and compassion from finances to health and everything in between. Helping others helps our selves. In honor of Valentine’s Day this month, I hope you remember to send an abundance of love to the most important person in your life—beautiful, wonderful, amazing you.

lenn Stokoe, owner of Float North County, is excited to announce they are now offering expanded services, including Couples Floats. “We’re installing a new tank that is large enough to float two people at one time,” he says. Although floating is typically a solitary experience, according to Stokoe, some people like to float with their significant other as an introduction to floating. It gives the couple a quiet, still environment to relax and decompress and rejuvenate. Some couples who meditate find a deeper connection with their spouse and a deeper meditation when done in the tank. The new large tank will provide people with more room to stretch out in the tank,” he explains. “It also features colored lighting and music, or complete silence and no lighting, depending on the floaters’ preference.” Location: 991 Lomas Santa Fe Dr., Ste. Valentine’s Special for First Time Clients
C
andy Vidales, owner of Skin Care by Candy in Carlsbad, is excited to offer a Valentine’s Day special of 25 percent off for first-time clients during the month of February. Skin Care By Candy, a skin revision spa using all botanically based products, focuses on skin care regimens that work. “Our facility uses state-of-the art technology to focus on skin revision,” says Vidales. “The methods and procedures we use, especially DMK skin care technology, help people get the results they’re looking for without surgery or long wait times for healing.” According to Vidales, DMK skin care is a holistic approach to healthy skin and is suitable for all skin types. “DMK’s advanced skin care technology is best for skin hyperpigmentation, acne, age-management and skin disorders. The DMK Enzyme Masque is the most powerful treatment because it tightens and lifts the skin for a firmer, youthful and glowing appearance while removing impurities from the skin cells by a process known as reverse osmosis.” Vidales, a professionally-trained paramedical skin therapist, helps each of her clients discover their skin’s natural balance by removing, rebuilding, protecting and maintaining optimum health. Her Elite Revision Concepts begin with a consultation, recommended treatment and routine protection that will help protect the skin’s surface. Address: 1207 Carlsbad Village Dr., Ste. Z, Carlsbad. PUBLISHER'S PICK Skin Care by Candy
B
eing an outdoorsy gal, I’ve spent a lot of time in sun over the past few decades. The proof of all that fun in the sun can be seen on my skin. Thankfully, I’ve been fortunate enough to be introduced to various holistic skin care treatments and products through the magazine. Recently, I decided to take Skin Care By Candy’s 10-day facial peel plunge. While there was a short period of time during the process that I felt like a reptile shedding my skin, the transformation was so worth it and something you have to experience to truly appreciate. Not only did I get rid of some deep, stubborn
wrinkles, but several precancerous skin spots disappeared as well. My face is glowing! Skin therapist Candy Vidales is committed to her practice and her products. I am grateful she sought me out to be her poster adult. It was all worth it and I did get a lot of extra work done while hibernating for a couple of days—another unexpected benefit. While I did the crème de la crème of her treatment offerings, there are different treatments available that fit all skincare needs and budgets. My skin feels new and I’m really glad I did it. It makes looking at myself in the mirror easier—and that’s no easy task with age. Shedding my vanity is another subject. For more information, call 760-716-7166 or visit SkinCareBy Candy.com. Research from the University of Texas at Arlington reported in The FASEB Journal, published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, has found that zinc supplements can inhibit or slow the growth of esophageal cancer cells. The research also found that zinc deficiency is common among throat cancer patients. Zinc-rich foods include spinach, flax seeds, beef, pumpkin seeds and seafood such as shrimp and oysters.

Antidepressants in Pregnancy Linked to Autism A study by the University of Bristol, England, of 254,610 young people from Stockholm showed that children born to mothers taking antidepressants during pregnancy had more than a 4 percent risk of autism, compared to less than a 3 percent risk in children born to mothers with psychiatric conditions not on antidepressants. Depression is common in women of childbearing age, with 3 to 8 percent of pregnant European women prescribed antidepressants. But with 95 percent of them bearing children without autism, the risks and benefits must be carefully weighed, say researchers.
THIRD-PERSON SELF-TALK AIDS IN EMOTIONAL CONTROL As reported in Scientific Reports, two studies of 37 and 52 people at Michigan State University have discovered that talking to ourselves in the third person using statements like, “Why is John upset?” instead of, “Why am I upset?” can help improve our ability to control our emotions. Everyone occasionally engages in internal monologue, an inner voice that guides our moment-to-moment reflections. Now, scientists believe that the language used in the process influences actions differently. The premise is that thirdperson self-talk leads us to think about ourselves similarly to how we think about others, which provides the psychological distance needed to facilitate self-control.

Britain May Charge Deposit to Reduce Bottle Litter
Britain recycled only 57 percent of the plastic bottles that were sold there in 2016, and is considering charging a deposit fee to reduce litter. Scotland is also introducing a deposit return policy for cans and bottles. Denmark recycles 90 percent and South Australia 80 percent by using deposits as an incentive. UK Environment Secretary Michael Gove says that almost 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the world’s oceans each year, with up to 80 percent washing out to sea from land. Gove is consulting with the industry to determine the advantages and disadvantages of different types of reward and return systems for plastic, metal and glass drinks containers. Britain’s decision to charge a deposit for each plastic bag in 2015 has slashed usage.

MEDITATION THAT WORKS
Tips for Finding the Right Practice
M
by April Thompson
ore Americans than ever before are seeking the benefits of meditation, which notably improves mental, physical and spiritual health. Choosing from its many styles and traditions can be daunting for a new meditator, as is figuring out how to incorporate such a practice into a busy life.
Universal Appeal “Meditation is for people of all spiritual backgrounds. As a tool to develop aware-
ness, it can enhance what you already believe and practice,” assures Diana Lang, the Los Angeles author of Opening to Meditation: A Gentle, Guided Approach and a spiritual counselor who has taught meditation for 37 years. For Jackie Trottmann, a Christian author from St. Louis, Missouri, there is no contradiction between a meditation practice and her faith; rather, they complement one another. For her, “Prayer is like talking to God, whereas meditation is
listening to God. Before I came to meditation, I had been doing all the talking.” She came to meditation during a trying period working in sales and marketing. “When a friend gave me a meditation CD, I popped it in after a stressful conference call and felt instantly calmed. Ten years later, meditation has gone beyond quieting the mind; it’s sunk into my heart and spirit,” says Trottmann, who went on to publish her own CDs at GuidedChristianMeditation.com. “I came to meditation tired of habitual suffering and stress, and wanting to be happier,” says Bill Scheinman, a coach in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), which he refers to as “mindfulness practice without the Buddhist jargon.” The Oakland, California, instructor has taught mindfulness in settings ranging from corporations to prisons, drawing from a range of meditative disciplines and 23 years of intensive practice.
Begin Modestly “Millions are seeking more mindfulness through meditation, but don’t know how to go about it,” says Sean Fargo, a Berkeley, California, meditation instructor and former Buddhist monk. “The key is to take baby steps, like going to the gym for the first time. Start by practicing a few minutes a day; just pay attention to something such as the sensations of breathing, without judgment.” “Having taught meditation to tens of thousands of people, I would say the most common issue is that beginning meditators don’t think they’re doing it right. It’s important not to judge yourself or have loaded expectations about the experience,” notes Lang. She suggests starting wherever we are right now, adding, “Whatever book, class or teacher you first stumble upon is a clue.” But that doesn’t call for rigidly adhering to a particular type of meditation forever.
Assess Benefits “Shop around and try different things, but at some point, you will begin to discover what works for you,” advises Scheinman. In trying to decide which medita14

tion practice is right for us, “Go with what feels juicy,” says Fargo, who founded MindfulnessExercises.com, offering 1,500 free mindfulness meditations, worksheets and talks. “You’re more likely to do what feels alive and enlivening.” The act of meditating can be uncomfortable, but the challenges are part of its power. Scheinman remarks. “If you establish a daily practice, eventually, you will become more clear-headed, kinder and happier. That’s how you know your practice is working—not how you feel during meditation itself.” Consistency is key. It’s not effective to only meditate when you feel good, he says.
Overview of Options
Mindfulness practices go by many names, from vipassana to MBSR, and can be done sitting or walking, but all are focused on cultivating moment-to-moment awareness. “Mindfulness is about being aware: deliberately paying attention to body sensations, thoughts and emotions. Focused attention is on the body, heart and mind,” explains Scheinman. Guided visualization differs from most forms of meditation in that the meditator is intentionally creating a mental image, typically one of a peaceful, beautiful place. Typically, the goal of a guided visualization is deep relaxation and stress reduction. Mantra meditations involve continuous repetition of a word, phrase or sound, drawing spiritual power from the sound’s vibration, as well as its meaning. Many mantras are uttered in a tradition’s native language, such as shanti, meaning peace in Sanskrit. Teachers like Lang prefer to use mantras in English that meditators can more easily grasp, such as, “Love is the way.” Breathing meditation. Meditation experts say our ever-present breath is a sound foundation for a meditation practice, as well as an easy place to start. “Tapping into the power of our breath is vital; it cleanses our system,” says Trottmann. olistic health practitioner Michael Mitchell, owner of Body Solutions 101 in Solana Beach, has had a decades-long passion for the study of movement and posture. In 1994, This former massage therapist began to study Rolfing and became certified in Structural Integration in 2001. “The Rolf Method is the best modality I know of for removing wrong patterns and postures, leading to the relief of pain,” says this practitioner, whose shares that his greatest enjoyment is watching his clients’ health improve as they remove blocks and tension. “This is a rewarding practice: helping others move into their process by ‘letting go’ of old patterns and habits.” According to Mitchell, the Rolf Method of Structural Integration is a systematic form of manual manipulation that aligns and organizes the body as a whole. “Structural Integration is a scientifically validated therapy and is customized to recognize each individual’s unique compensations and structural patterns. As compensations start to let go, the body will continue to organize itself, allowing for greater ease, movement and a better posture,” explains Mitchell. Mitchell shares that the intension of this work is to help us feel at home and grounded in our bodies. “This process of awareness, where we recognize and undo unhealthy patterns is a fascinating one, especially when we discover how the body responds. When you are secure and supported, your life is easier, and you get more out of it. A well-lived, healthy life is rewarding. Live your potential and experience your body’s intelligence.” Body Solutions 101 is located at 535 North Coast Hwy. 101, Ste. D, in Solana Beach. Eight-week Stress Reduction Course
J
ulie Chippendale, RN, BSN, certified yoga instructor and mindfulness teacher announces her upcoming Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course being held on Monday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. March 12 to April 30 at Scripps Encinitas Hospital. The 8-week course is geared toward individuals interested in being an active participant in changing their health while achieving a greater sense of well-being. "It is designed to guide you in becoming familiar on how your mind works," shares Chippendale. "While 'control' is not the goal of MBSR, you may begin to see that you have more choices of where and how you give your attention. Participants report living more in the present moment and find it easier to plan for the future without living in the future as well as understanding the past without dwelling on the past." Keep Your Money Safe with Indexed Accounts W
hen I was asked to write an article for this month’s issue, at first, I struggled with the content. What wisdom could I impart to Natural Awakenings' readers that they could relate to? Then I remembered my passion, and reason, for entering the financial industry to begin with. My career was launched because I was sick of the roller coaster ride called the stock market. Don’t get me wrong—rollercoasters are a blast when you’re at an amusement park, but not so much when it comes to our money. Like many others, I had all my retirement savings in my 401 (k) which exposed me 100 percent to the roller coaster of the market. In 2001, I lost 48 percent of my money. The public was told that this was a market correction. The market didn’t completely recover to its previous numbers until seven years later, and then it dropped again—this time a whopping 54 percent. Granted, the stock market has been the best long-term investment over the past 100 years. As Steve Forbes pointed out, in 2014, “One million invested in stocks in 1935 is worth $2.4 billion today.” Forbes, however, was referring to the S&P, not 401K funds or money market funds. The moment we buy into an IRA or 401k, we are subject to the fund manager’s picks. But few firms will discuss this. In fact, 96 percent of actively managed funds fail to beat the market. Not only does our money not keep up with the market in these mutual funds, but we are subject to fees, which also deteriorates our initial nest egg. The fees are hidden. As quoted by “Jack” Bogle,
the founder and now-retired chairman of The Vanguard Group, “If you make an initial investment of $10,000, at age 20, and assuming 7 percent annual growth, by age 80, you would have $574,464. But, if you paid 2.5 percent in annual management fees and other expenses, your ending balance would be $140,274, over the same period.” So, where do we put our money? The top investors in the U.S., including Jack Bogle and Warren Buffet, endorse a low-cost S&P 500 index mutual fund, which has a cross section of business. While index funds may be one solution, there is also another type of indexed account that provides complete safety. It gives us the upside of the market gains but never the downside risk—and there are no fees. Index Accounts may be the right investment vehicle for you if: You do not want to manage your own money, and you do not want to pay management fees. You are willing to leave your money in the account for at least 10 years. You are willing to give up some of the upside potential, to never lose a dime, again. Would like the opportunity to turn on an income stream that you are guaranteed to never outlive.

What Comes Next?

by Justin Thyme
017 was an amazing, history-making year for the financial markets and Bitcoin led the parade. Bitcoin was up 1,400 percent in December driven to more than double, even the bullish projections, by the misunderstood prospects of the SEC and Commodities Futures Trading Commission approvals for this newly regulated financial asset. It is no wonder then when the crypto-currency world took a step back to assess what just happened and trading volume dropped, so did the Bitcoin price—by 50 percent at one point. While experienced Bitcoin investors knew better than to panic at another re-adjustment of this volatile crypto-currency, even at this scale, newcomers might have had a totally different experience. Who exactly is playing in the Bitcoin/ crypto-currency space? • 60 percent of Americans now know about Bitcoin but only 5 percent own any • 21 percent of that 5 percent are considering adding it to their portfolios • A supermajority is male and under 34; 58 percent are white • Older Americans account for about 1 percent of Bitcoin owners • Bitcoin owners are politically independent by half • Here are a few headlines to add some perspective: Van-Petersen said Tuesday that Bitcoin could hit between $50,000 and $100,000 in 2018 Van-Petersen now says Bitcoin will be driven by a larger uptake of institutional investors and futures contracts. Thomas Lee, Head of Research at Fundstrat Global Advisors, expects Bitcoin to reach $125,000 by 2022. Over the past year, crypto-currencies spiked while gold markets slumped and when gold prices jumped, digital assets dropped in value. No matter your perspective, 2018 and Bitcoin should, at the very least, hold your attention. February 2018

Is Your Mattress The Problem?
How to get a good night's sleep, without harmful chemicals
T
ake this quiz: 1. Do you have back pain when you wake up? 2. Neck pain? Stiffness or soreness? 3. Does it take you more than 30 minutes to fall asleep? 4. Do you experience restless sleep? Toss and turn at night? If you answered “yes” two times or more, this may be the most important article you read all year. Here’s why… While you sleep, your immune system recovers and prepares for the day ahead. It replenishes every cell in your body. Low-quality, uncomfortable mattresses have been linked to discomfort and pain, which can prevent quality sleep. People who struggle with sleep deprivation may suffer from irritability, depression, over-eating—and even face a higher risk for Alzheimer’s. If your mattress is filled with chemical toxins, airborne allergens, or worse, your body is doing battle with those things rather than repairing itself. You’re losing valuable energy each night instead of healing your body and revitalizing your mind. And all of that can wreak havoc on your health and well being.
What’s In Your Mattress? The following information may be 18

disturbing to some. That’s because the Environmental Protection Agency has identified at least four possibly dangerous chemicals commonly found in some synthetic mattresses—benzene, propane, naphthalene and styrene— especially bedding made in China and overseas, where such governing agencies do not exist. Consider these facts: ● Typical mattresses made from artificial materials are known to emit potentially harmful gases in your bedroom—a phenomenon known as off-gassing. ● Laboratory researchers in the U.S. and Europe have identified up to 61 potentially harmful chemicals that off- gas from typical synthetic mattresses. ● Exposure to these 61 chemicals has been associated with irritation of the skin, eyes and digestive systems. ● Additionally, the chemicals off-gassed by synthetic mattresses have been associated with headache, fatigue, depression and even hearing loss. ● Your skin, the most porous entry point into your body, has contact with a mattress for 8 hours every night, on average. ● Children, who breathe faster than adults, are especially vulnerable to chemical exposure. Every night, we lie down with minimal clothing for a seemingly good night’s sleep. But in reality, while lying on a conventional mattress, we are breathing in and absorbing through our
skin a range of chemicals from synthetic materials—chemicals that can disrupt our sleep cycles and negatively impact our health. Our mattresses emit gases from a toxic brew of components used to cre- ate them. From the polyurethane foam used in the padding to fire retardants and other additives, conventional mattresses continue to release chemicals in gaseous form long after they roll out of the factory. Even after they have finished off-gassing, the chemically based construction of a conventional mattress provides an ideal environment for dust and dust mites, whose excrement is the #1 trigger for asthma attacks. And get this. You know those white labels on a mattress that say, “Do Not Remove”? Incredibly, the law actually allows manufacturers to include potentially hazardous chemicals in your mattress without disclosing the fact on any label. But if a true list of ingredients were available for conventional mattresses, it would likely include TDI (a common component), a known carcinogen, which can cause respiratory ailments such as bronchitis and asthma. In addition, liver damage and breathing problems have been linked to vinyl chloride monomers, another common mattress material. The list goes on. Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that you would be given information about any of these chemicals from a manufacturer of conventional, synthetic mattresses.
The Natural Alternative
One of the most significant actions we can take to reduce our exposure to toxins and improve our overall health is to make changes to the one household item that is in direct contact with our bodies for one third of our lives—our mattresses. “There are more ways than ever to sleep better and wake up pain-free on a natural, organic mattress,” says Pablo Hernandez, president of Mattress Makers, in San Diego, CA. “Many people, like me, are in search of a natural sleep system. I was shocked to learn that toxic emissions from mattresses are a major source of daily pollution in our lives,” says Hernandez.
ADVERTORIAL An all-natural, organic mattress is free of potentially harmful chemicals. Instead, natural materials like natural rubber are used. Rubber is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, making it ideal for allergy sufferers. Also, natural rubber is antimicrobial, inhibiting the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew, which can cause asthma and respiratory distress. No synthetic materials are added to provide these benefits. “All rubber used in our natural mattresses is from the sap of a rubber tree, which can yield rubber for up to 30 years. When a tree is done producing rubber, it is taken down and turned into furniture. A new tree is then planted in its place, thus making natural rubber a sustainable bedding component,” says Hernandez. What’s the difference between an organic mattress and a conventional one? “Organic mattresses are crafted from natural materials. Conventional mattresses are made mostly of artificial materials from nonrenewable sources, such as plastic and other petrochemicals,” says Hernandez. Do organic mattresses come in different firmness? “Yes, there are two main types of organic mattresses: Natural rubber and inner-spring. Both styles are available with varying firmness options to suit anyone’s sleep needs,” says Hernandez.
What To Look For
When researching natural, organic mattresses, look at these areas: 1. Visit a store that carries mattresses made with either 100% all-natural latex or certified organic latex. “A lot of mattress companies market their mattresses as being all-natural but in reality either use a blended latex made with synthetics or just a little layer of latex combined with polyurethane foam,” says Hernandez. 2. Try out a new mattress for at least 15 minutes. Lie down in various positions, to simulate a night of sleep. Look for a store that offers a clean pillow to test out. “It’s important to dress for the occasion. When mattress shopping it’s best to wear loose fitting clothes or something similar you would wear to bed to get a good idea of how the mattress responds in your sleep ware ,” says Hernandez.
3. 1. Protect yourself by insisting on a strong guarantee. “I know people are tired of sleeping on a worn-out, chemicalladen mattress. That’s why we give every customer a 180 night Wake Up Happy Comfort Guarantee to exchange if it doesn’t deliver the sleep you want,” says Hernandez. If you’re not sleeping well or you’re worried about toxic chemicals in your bedroom, consider this: The two things in life you spend the most time on are work and sleep. How much of your remaining hours on earth do you want to waste losing sleep on an uncomfortable, chemical-laden mattress? That’s a question that many are asking.

Cannabis is legal, so now what? by Robbin Lynn
Cannabis became legal for adult use in California on November 9, 2016, and the much-anticipated rules and regulations surrounding sales became effective on January 1, 2018.
B
ut that doesn’t mean you can just run down to any corner store and buy it. Only 25 percent of the cities in California are adopting regulations. Local licensing is required for a business to apply for a state license leaving many businesses that have been operating for years in a precarious position. So, whether you want to use cannabis medicinally or purely for recreational purposes, this leaves 75 percent of the population—who voted for legalization—still unable to gain safe, reliable and professional access on a local level. Some cities will regulate medicinal cannabis only, while others will allow for recreational sales. In the entire county of San Diego, only the City of San Diego has ordinances in place to regulate can-

nabis businesses at this time. Many of the legally licensed shops in the City of San Diego have or are converting to recreational licenses, so if you want to use it medicinally and need solid information, your options locally are becoming increasingly narrower. Navigating the new regulations and the world of cannabis dispensaries can be daunting, intimidating and sometimes downright scary. So, before you go to a dispensary, do some homework.
How do I find a dispensary?
Word of mouth is always the best approach. Start by asking a friend or family member. If that is not an option, search for “marijuana dispensaries near me” in your favorite search engine. But before
Whether you choose delivery service or store, you should expect to be greeted in a professional and responsible manner. Delivery services should be discreet and your order should arrive in sealed/unmarked outer packaging. Physical locations should feel safe, clean, professional and easy to access. If you must enter through the back alley or unmarked doors, this may not be the best place to obtain cannabis for medicinal use. In addition to the state regulations, cities may augment the rules with their own criteria, for example the hours a store or delivery service may operate. If the location operates 24/7, it is definitely not in compliance with state or local laws.
Knowledge and experience of the staff
If you are looking to get a good night’s sleep or alleviate chronic pain, having someone in their early twenties describe a product as being “dank” may not be the type of advice you need. Having someone explain the various therapies (smoking is not the only option today), provide guidance about products that have worked for others with similar conditions/complaints, best practices for using the products, as well as proper and clear dosing guidance is paramount to helping you achieve the results you seek.
Product quality and labeling
Where are the products coming from? How and where is the cannabis grown? Is it organically grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers? Are packaged
PLANT MEDICINE products, such as edibles or tinctures, packaged professionally and properly labeled? The new regulations are in a transition period, with the industry being given six months to be in full compliant. Ask if the products are 2018 complaint. And if they are not, at the very least, there should be a brand, product name, lab results, cannabinoid ratios and ingredients. If edible, nutritional information should also be listed. In addition, there should be clear instructions for use.
Bring along a friend or family member
Make sure to bring a trusted family member or friend with you. From the first visit to the doctor who recommends cannabis to a visit to your first dispensary, the information can be overwhelming. As you navigate this new world, it’s important to have some extra guidance and someone to act as a sounding board, provide moral support or offer their own expertise. Once you make a purchase, please be responsible. Treat your cannabis and cannabis infused products with the same diligence you would alcohol or prescription medications. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery during or after consuming cannabis and be sure to keep all cannabis products locked up or safely stored so that children or pets do not have access. Learning about the new therapies, techniques, selecting the best products within a person’s comfort zone, and dosing is key to achieving desired results when exploring the use of cannabis. All of this requires guidance from those experienced in these areas and who know how to communicate clearly with adults of all ages. Take the time to research, read reviews and ask questions before choosing a dispensary. It may take a few attempts, but you’ll find the place that is best for you.

Be On the Ball Putting Extra Fun into Fitness
unaffected part of the brain must take over the lost function. The goal of the therapist is to establish new neural pathways through repetition and visual reinforcement. We have patients do simple exercises with the ball hundreds of times so these pathways start to form,” explains Bob Schrupp, a physical therapist and founder of Therapy Network, in Winona, Minnesota. One goal for physical and occupational therapists is to help clients perform rehabilitation exercises that also motivate them to continue exercising. While the ball is an excellent tool in clinical settings, Schrupp cautions, “After a stroke, or if you’re older or in poor health, it’s always best to check with your doctor or physical therapist to determine if stability ball exercises are appropriate.”
Pregnant Women and Senior Fitness
heir playful appearance as a beach ball look-alike makes exercise balls welcome props in home workouts, gyms and yoga studios. “They’re a fun training tool for every age, from children to maturing Baby Boomers,” says Dennis Fuchs, CEO of TheraGear, in Sumas, Washington. “Exercise balls are affordable and offer many benefits, from enhanced mobility to reduced risk of injury and increased athletic performance.” Originally developed by Italian plastic manufacturer Aquilino Cosani in 1963 as a toy called the Gymnastik and then used by British and Swiss physical therapists to help orthopedic patients, the ball has since come a long way to serve fitness needs. Also known as Swiss, stability, balance, physio- and Pilates balls, this colorful piece of equipment can range in size from 14 to 34 inches to be appropriate for a user’s height (Tinyurl.com/RightSizeExerciseBall).
Balance balls, when used properly, can offer a safe way for pregnant women, children and seniors to stay fit. Exercising with a ball can help older individuals increase flexibility, especially in the hips, with cardiac strengthening as a bonus. Pregnant women can safely increase and maintain abdominal strength as the baby grows, and in doing so, care for muscles that will help them through labor. “Pregnancy can throw a woman off balance, and a growing baby puts pressure on internal organs. Pressing the back on a stability ball against a wall offers support for squats. Sitting on a ball helps maintain good posture and pelvic mobility, and reduces low back pain,” explains Pond. Incorporating the ball into yoga or Pilates routines prompts different muscles into action because it calls on the body’s learned ability to sense and respond to movement, termed proprioception. Pond says, “Proprioception is challenged just from sitting on the ball; there are immediate physical adjustments made to maintain posture and stability. In yoga, the ball is another tool to increase flexibility and balance.”
Core Strength Without Strain
School and Workplace
Stability balls are recommended by fitness trainers and chiropractors for their ability to build core strength and increase flexibility of pelvic muscles without putting unnecessary strain on the back. “The core is a series of muscles used in almost all functional movement; tailored exercises focus both on abdominal and back strength and pelvic and hip stability,” explains Linnea Pond, an exercise instructor at the Pocono Family YMCA, in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Using an exercise ball also promotes full body conditioning. “Swiss ball training connects the brain with stabilizer muscles, improving gross motor skills and upper body strength, as well,” Fuchs elaborates. “These versatile training balls help equip an individual to handle the functional demands of sports and everyday life.”
Recovery from Injury and Illness Exercise balls are used in occupational therapy for stroke patients and others recovering from injury. “A stroke deadens part of the brain, and to regain movement in an affected arm or leg, an
Exercise balls are increasingly replacing traditional chairs in classrooms and offices, and teachers are reporting better grades and attention span as a result, while workers appreciate better-toned muscles and enhanced balance. Maintaining good posture by sitting on the ball also increases blood circulation throughout the body, including the brain.
