Change comes upon us like the seasons. We welcome the invigorating chill

of winter and snow, the warmth of summer, the colors of fall, the sweet breath of spring; yet weather can bring about sudden unexpected conditions that can alter our lives quickly and forever. We surely had our share of that this year. Holidays can beat down our psyche like weather can tear down our possessions. For many, it’s a very emotional time; we often become more vulnerable and spend

more time reflecting on our gains and losses more than other times of the year. Expectations can be like a weather disaster. Be prepared emotionally by limiting expectations and maybe even some interactions. What is, is. 'Tis the season to share joy and good will.

What do we do with holiday emotions? Wrap them up, cherish them and

share your love with others in need of love. True feelings are the best gifts one can ask for.

I’ve spent many holidays filled with family and friends and some alone.

Both brought joy and peace, happiness and sadness and new experiences I never would have enjoyed if change had not occurred. I cherish all of them all the same—whether filled with tears or cheers, as most holidays are filled with both. To “feel” is a gift. And it’s really important for us to take comfort in whatever feelings come up, especially around this sentimental time of year.

Show compassion to ourselves and others in our thoughts and actions, even

in our social media and technological interactions. If we can respect ourselves, one another, and all living beings on our beloved planet, we will make it a better place to live.

Goodwill and peace to all on Earth rings so sweet and true and may it be felt

in abundance all year round.

Easy Roadmap to the Life of Your Dreams

Milk Chocolate Also Benefits Heart Health

Location: 2210 Encinitas Blvd., Ste. L, Encinitas. For more information, call 760-633-3328, email MarieLaure@Inneroptimal.com or visit MyOptimalBrain.com.

H

igh-cacao dark chocolate contains high levels of flavanol, a compound known for its heart health benefits, but less is known about diluted foods such as milk chocolate candy. Harvard researchers followed 55,502 subjects for 13 years, comparing levels of high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease to lifestyle traits. They found those eating one to three servings of chocolate a month (including milk chocolate) displayed a 10 percent lower risk of irregular heartbeat than those eating an ounce or less a month. Eating one serving per week of chocolate yielded a 17 percent lower risk and two to six servings a week 20 percent, and then leveled off after eating one or more servings per day. “Eating excessive amounts of chocolate is not recommended, because many chocolate products are high in calories from sugar and fat, and could lead to weight gain and other metabolic problems,” advises Elizabeth Mostofsky, author of the study.

GUT BACTERIA IMBALANCE LINKED TO CHRONIC FATIGUE Ben Schonewille /Shutterstock.com

Fifty healthy patients and 50 with chronic fatigue syndrome were tested for bacteria and immune molecules by researchers from Columbia University. They discovered that imbalances in the levels of certain gut bacteria are prevalent in individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome, a disorder often accompanied by extreme fatigue, muscle and joint pain, cognitive issues and insomnia.

Pink Noise While Asleep Helps Memory

R

esearchers from Northwestern University have found that acoustic stimulation using pink noise (random sound with more low frequencies than white noise) increases slow-wave brain activity, thus improving sleep-dependent memory retention. Thirteen mature adults completed two nights of sleep; one with the pink noise and one without, in random order. Specific brainwave activity increased during the periods when the pink noise was being delivered, suggesting that it could help older adults preserve some memory functions.

E

arlier this year, Carl and Johanna Wright, owners of Lotus Cafe and Juice Bar in Encinitas, decided to spend more time focusing on the most important meal of the day—breakfast. “In this busy world, it is so easy to forego eating breakfast,” shares Johanna. “Yet, I feel so grounded and strong on the mornings when I do take time to nourish this physical vehicle... I am more likely to get in good exercise because there is fuel in my body. And, emotionally I tend to feel happier and more uplifted.” With a tantalizing array of breakfast options, the pair shares that three menu items in particular have become their signature breakfast dishes—the bodacious Balboa Burrito, rocking Huevos Rancheros and the coveted Coconut French Toast. Each of these brilliant dishes has made their way into the hearts of many Lotus Café customers. Nothing says I’m ready to take on the day better than Lotus Café’s famed Balboa Burrito. “It’s my new favorite for brekky, which gives me an energy boost

“From my first meal at the Lotus Cafe in 2009, the restaurant was one of my favorites. Now, almost eight years later I can still say it’s great. No matter who I bring with me, their varied menu works. My non-vegetarian family enjoys their meals, my vegan husband has plenty of delicious options, and even my gluten-free friend can find things she’s happy to eat." "The quality of the food has never wavered and is always fresh and delicious. The atmosphere is peaceful; the restaurant is clean; the staff is competent and eager to please— and now I can even have a great breakfast seven days a week." "I’m grateful Lotus Cafe is in Encinitas. It’s one of the only places I can go that’s both healthy and delicious. “My go-to smoothie spot in Encinitas! Quick service and a great breakfast menu." “Love this place! Amazing açai and pitaya bowls, and beautiful atmosphere!”

at the beginning of my day, and I find that my mental focus is stronger. It keeps my energy up and keeps me from reaching for something less healthy later in the day out of pure hunger,” says Johanna. Inspired by the savory goodness of the region, every bite of the Balboa Burrito is bursting with flavor. This unforgettable masterpiece features delicious free-range scrambled eggs, smooth melted cheese, golden fried potatoes, fresh local avocado and zippy salsa fresca, all bundled up in an organic whole wheat chapati. The tantalizing blend of flavors is sure to please hungry tastebuds. The scrumptious Huevos Rancheros is another customer favorite. Made with two free range eggs on organic corn tortillas, this dish is smothered in a delectable homemade ranchero sauce, refreshing cilantro and mouthwatering Monterey jack cheese. Served with organic brown rice, beans, guacamole, salsa and sour cream, every bite of this lip-smacking meal is a heavenly treat. “Huevos Rancheros is my most often ‘go-to’, paired with a double-shot of wheatgrass and a café mocha,” explains Carl. “For every shot of espresso, we freshly grind our organic Joshua Tree Coffee Company coffee beans. We sampled every coffee in the area, and found that Joshua Tree Coffee is the best, and our customers agree.” Those seeking a brilliant pairing of sweet and savory need look no further than the rich and flavorful Coconut French Toast. This delectable dish features two thick slices of 8-grain, sourdough or gluten-free bread, hand-dipped in egg batter, spiced with cinnamon, coconut and vanilla, and topped with seasonal fruit. Served with a side of real maple syrup, this delicious dish makes a magnificent meal. “Eating foods of high vibrational quality helps us to have a higher quality of life, and if you are engaged in any personal form of spiritual practice—whether it be prayer, meditation, positive affirmations, or contemplation—a higher quality of practice,” adds Johanna. ocal empowerment coach Caroline Andrews is excited to announce that the next 12-week Sistership Circle begins January 8. She will host an introductory night on December 14 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. for those interested in sampling the circle before they join. “Have you been looking for a place that provides safety to create, love, dance, laugh, cry or just be? A place where your authentic self is always celebrated? A place you can open up to share desires, thoughts and feelings?” she asks. “Then join me for this fun experience to build sisterhood, meditate, laugh and connect.” According to Andrews, those who participate in sistership circle sharing, activities and meditations will leave feeling grounded, connected, rejuvenated, loved and present. “We are rising, Sisters,” she explains. “It’s our time to rise into visibility, express our voice and contribute our gifts to shape the future of our world.” Caroline Andrews has dedicated over 15 years to studying spirituality, relationships, yoga and personal development and has found the keys to pleasure, health and relationships for women—especially those over 40. She spends her life teaching, instructing and coaching women to take full ownership of their lives, create amazing relationships with themselves and others, and use pleasure to power all aspects of who they are and what they want with her signature programs. “The great secret about feminine power that I’ve discovered is that it’s not something we can unlock by ourselves. To create a world where women can rise, we need to create a culture between women that celebrates and amplifies each other’s power. We need to be mirrored, supported, challenged and championed by each other to come to unleash our brilliance,” explains Andrews. “Are you with me?” For more information and to sign up, visit SistershipCircle. com/Caroline-circle.

A Year of Inspired Living

Essays and Exercises for Self-Reflection

I

gnore those who say life doesn’t come with a manual. Kelly McGrath Martinsen has exactly the guide you need to make life richer and more insightful with her new book, A Year of Inspired Living: Essays and Exercises for Self-Reflection. This is the handbook for anyone who wants to embrace a better life. Through entertaining anecdotes and guided journal pages, A Year of Inspired Living helps the reader create their very own personalized self-help book. Martinsen, who is the publisher of Natural Awakenings Long Island magazine, has designed exercises for each month that include room for reflections, lists to seize the most from life, and culminate in writing your very own “publisher’s letter,” just as she does in her magazine. The letter provides space to reflect on that month’s personal inspiration. By digging deep and really talking about issues from the heart, Martinsen guides readers to contemplate their own feelings, hopes and dreams. The interactive book also includes a hashtag (#AYOIL) so that readers can share their insights and experiences, giving solitary readers the group support they need to make lasting change for their best year ever. Health Communications, Inc.; December 5, 2017. $12.95; 202 pages; ISBN: 978-0-7573-2009-5.

globalbriefs News and resources to inspire concerned citizens to work together in building a healthier, stronger society that benefits all.

New Tech May Relieve Elder Isolation

Approximately a third of those older than 65 and half of elders at least 85 live alone, as do many people with illnesses and mental disorders. All can suffer from feelings of profound loneliness. Emerging virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies provide avenues to alleviate such isolation, instilling contentment, peace of mind, enrichment, fun, a sense of companionship and contributing to physical and mental health. Instead of passively watching TV, seniors can travel virtually to World Heritage sites, revisit old haunts or even attend family events they would otherwise miss. In terms of benefits attained, VR is predicted to measurably improve seniors’ quality of life. Healthcare applications of AI and telemedicine include reminders to eat, be active or take medications, perhaps assisted by a robotic companion that can share information with practitioners, children, caregivers and emergency personnel. Social applications include helping to form and maintain social connections. It may also serve as a personal concierge by reminding seniors of appointments, playing games with them and initiating dialogue to spark outward engagement.

Tree Tally

Digitalizing Data Helps Rainforest Census The Amazon rainforest is thought to harbor a greater diversity of trees than anywhere else on Earth, but the exact number has long been a mystery. In 2013, scientists estimated that the number of species was around 16,000, but no actual count had been done. In a new paper in Scientific Reports, researchers delved into museum collections from around the world to confirm the current number of tree species recorded in the Amazon and assess possibilities of those yet to be discovered. “Since 1900, between 50 and 200 new trees have been discovered in the Amazon every year,” notes Nigel Pitman, a Mellon senior conservation ecologist with the Field Museum. “Our analysis suggests that we won’t finish discovering new tree species there for three more centuries.” The study relied upon the digitization of museum collections data— photographs and digital records—of the specimens housed there and shared worldwide through aggregator sites like IDigBio.org. “It gives scientists a better sense of what’s actually growing in the Amazon Basin, aiding conservation efforts,” says Pitman.

INSPIRED LIVING Five Ways to Make the New Year Sparkle by Kelly Martinsen

I

nspiration may strike anywhere, at any time. The trick is nurturing the process to appear on demand when we need it most. Often, an inspiration is sparked when we perceive someone being selfless, courageous, physically extraordinary or deliciously creative. However, we don’t need to wait for outside stimulus when we can discover internal stirrings by invoking any of these self-inspiring tips.

Art Stocker/Shutterstock.com

Just Do It – The Nike slogan has never been more appropriate. We all have something we’ve thought about doing or trying. Whether traveling to a new location, trying a different sport, joining a new-to-us group or club, or making more friends, don’t put it off— just do it.

Economics examined the relationship between volunteering and happiness in a large group of American adults, they found that the more people volunteered, the happier they were. Journal – People often journal as a way to reflect upon their lives. This can be helpfully revealing, but rather than looking back, look forward, using a journal as a blueprint to manifest the most inspired year yet. Write out plans and dreams with the steps needed to achieve them.

Defeat allodoxaphobia – It’s the fear of others’ negative opinions. Everyone suffers from this to some extent, and it can hinder us from living our best life. Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt remarked, “You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do.”

Gratitude – This is the big one. One way to be and stay inspired is by starting off each day in a state of gratitude. Every morning before getting out of bed, think of at least three things to be grateful for. By doing this, we recognize the blessings we have and greet the day in a positive frame of mind. It’s a perfect way to end each day, too. When someone routinely inquires, “How are you?” answer, “I am grateful.” Our time on Earth is not infinite. With only so many days promised, let’s vow to live them inspired.

Volunteer – A common excuse for not volunteering is, “I don’t have the time.” Next year, make the time. When researchers at the London School of

How Bitcoin Can Protect Your Nonprofit from Proposed Tax Changes by Jim Farren

T

here’s been a lot more talk these days about how nonprofits can possibly benefit from Bitcoin and crypto-currency. It’s a great question and there’s no better time than now to consult your financial professionals regarding your personal situation. However, don’t be surprised if they aren’t knowledgeable about crypto-currency and tax codes as many in the financial world have yet to learn the ins and outs of this progressive currency. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to get as many second opinions as possible; especially with the uncertainty of the new tax code. Below are two common questions about Bitcoin currency and taxes: Are donations made in Bitcoin tax deductible? To illustrate the answer to this question, I defer to a famous line often used by John Cleese’s announcer character in Monty Python’s Flying Circus: “And now for something completely different.” The answer is that there is no answer because the question no longer makes sense in the world of cryptocurrency. We are so used to thinking in the old paradigm of conventional fiat currency, banking, economics and tax codes that we can’t wrap our minds around the “new reality” that we are entering. Carlos Castaneda would probably have trouble with this too, so don’t feel bad. Bitcoin held in a Blockchain.com digital wallet is completely anonymous; it is also completely invisible… period. Nobody, including the IRS, can

see, find or determine who owns the Bitcoin in a Blockchain.com account. However, this is not the case for other wallets like Coinbase. com. Since Bitcoin has no identifiable “ownership” there is no one to receive a tax deduction for donating it. And since Bitcoin, held as such, has no ‘ownership identification’ it is not taxed in the first place so there is no ‘need’ for a deduction. The question therefore is irrelevant. How can Bitcoin benefit a nonprofit? Let’s start simple. If you own Bitcoin, you can transfer it to a nonprofit Blockchain.com wallet anonymously. You pay no tax, the nonprofit pays no tax, and there is no need to complicate your tax return. However, if you want credit or an acknowledgement for your gift, then this route won’t work for you. Let’s look at some other benefits. Buying and holding Bitcoin is likely going to continue to be a huge wealth builder for the foreseeable future. Right now, we’re in a “gold rush” phase which could last for 18 months to three years depending on the acceleration of global adoption. By owning and donating Bitcoin to a nonprofit you are giving them, and yourself, a gift that will continue to “appreciate in value.” Also, there are vetted investments that can be made with Bitcoin that will multiply the number or amount of your Bitcoin so you both will be multiplying an appreciating asset. That’s called exponential growth. Many knowledgeable experts agree that we will not see a global,

Cryptocurrency, Bitcoin especially, takes money out of the control of governments, banks and central banks and puts it directly into the hands of the people that own and use it. It is the end of inflation. It is global financial stability. It levels the economic playing field. It makes ‘banking’ available to the poorest of the poor and provides an unparalleled opportunity for early adopters to generate immeasurable wealth in an incredibly short period of time. lternative currency and barter are favorite subjects of mine. Lately, cryptocurrency is “all the rage”— and for good reason. While it’s hard at first to wrap our minds around virtual currency, once we dig in, we find out that it’s actually a very simple concept—and one with boundless benefits—including protecting those who own Bitcoin with blockchain technology. The value of Bitcoin is skyrocketing as it becomes more and more mainstream. If there was ever a time to hop on board the Bitcoin train, the time is now. A vast number of economies, banks and billionaires are backing this tender. Why? Because it’s the wave of the future. Not only does it help those who own it protect and easily grow their money, it benefits nonprofits and poor communities, too.

Understanding these new digital currencies and how they affect our global commerce and how we can use them in our daily lives is important stuff. Don’t shun what you don’t understand. Cryptocurrency is safer than the payment systems we currently have in place—as all the hacking shows us. Yes, you can buy real estate, cars, etc. while cutting out the middleman and increasing access to everyone in the market on a global basis. You are in charge of your own terms. And unlike our paper currency that keeps getting printed while being backed by more and more debt, only a specified amount of Bitcoin will be produced to ensure a safer global economy. How to Really Enjoy the Season by Dianne Bischoff James

eelings of comfort and joy can seem elusive when the holiday to-do list looms or runs amok. The season can seem more like an endless burden than a parade of cheerful events and glad tidings. Amidst celebratory chaos, these simple rules will help restore inner peace and create greater happiness.

1

Eschew Perfection Guests are much more interested in filling their stomachs with great food than judging the scuff marks and wall dings. The perfection of the season is found in the special moments when families and friends sit down together.

2

Pay Attention to the Smiles The approaching holidays encourage more shared smiles, kind words and thoughtful gestures. While out and about, look for the grins and well wishes. Hold the door open for others and offer a friendly greeting to store clerks. We’ll find ourselves smiling even more, because thoughtfulness is contagious.

Philip Stein is a Leader in Wearable Sleep Technology by Linda Sechrist

F

rom computers, cell phones, smart TVs, DVR players and programmable appliances to a seemingly endless list of other electronic gadgets, we are in constant contact with unnatural electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) generated by technology. In today’s 24/7 society, invisible EMFs are inescapable; they permeate our working and living spaces. What we may not know is how they negatively impact our body’s natural sleep-wake cycle: suppressing melatonin, the hormone that controls the natural circadian rhythm, disturbing slumber and even affecting weight gain, according to University of Tel Aviv research. On the brighter side, some new technological products promise to restore balance to the body, including deeper and more restful sleep. From the Philip Stein sleep bracelet, sleep number beds and portable sleep trackers to sleep-related apps, devices and applications, user-friendly innovations are

addressing America’s sleep deprivation problem. “Philip Stein lifestyle accessories such as the sleep bracelet are designed to contribute to a better quality of life. The unique technology inside each one channels beneficial natural frequencies in the environment into your body,” says Will Stein, co-founder and president of the Philip Stein Group. “The result is to help the individual feel centered, balanced, grounded and more easily able to maintain a sense of well-being.” The company defines optimal wellbeing as a state of harmony achieved through physical, emotional, mental and spiritual alignment. Although natural-frequency technology was developed earlier by a group of engineers and scientists exploring various frequencies’ influence on water, the initial discovery has been attributed to ancient sages in India that intuited them. For example, 7.83 Hz, the frequency of “om”, happens to be Mother Earth’s natural heartbeat rhythm, now known as the Schumann Resonance. Aligned with the brain’s alpha and theta states, this technology of resonating frequencies has been carefully tuned and tested by Philip Stein researchers, technicians and sleep experts. Today, it is at the core of all Philip Stein products. Philip Stein’s tuning technology picks up and channels the beneficial natural frequencies that have always surrounded human beings. “We believe that all organisms have evolved or grown accustomed to these natural frequencies, and our systems are tuned to operate best with them, rather than with the increasing number of manmade frequencies we experience in the modern world,” explains Stein.
