his is my seventh year publishing Natural Awakenings. To say that it’s been an insightful, rewarding and transitional journey would be an understatement. My utmost gratitude goes out to all my community partners including my advertisers, my readership and my team of passionate and dedicated coworkers. Thank you for seven incredible years! Due to my being at the publishing helm of this magazine, I’m constantly getting educated on and introduced to alternative products and services. Like everything, awareness and education comes first. I feel that my publishing life continuously takes me down paths I need to investigate and follow. It seems that plant medicine is my newest calling these days. The recent cannabis controversy is of particular interest. The cannabis industry is presently referred to as the Wild Wild West due to all the associated conflicting information and regulations. Products and rumors are being dispersed without the proper knowledge. Hemp, cannabis and many other plant medicines have been used for centuries and the medicinal properties are indisputably present; yet it remains classified as a class 1 narcotic. We are living the prohibition days all over again. Now, in 2017, a “smoke easy” can be the new speakeasy. Rather than worrying about confusing legal issues, we should be informing ourselves on these medicinal plants. I’d rather spend my time researching which products are right for us and whether or not using them can improve the quality of our lives than worrying about gray legal parameters. Knowledge is king. Mass media is so often biased—it’s news to sway, not inform. I am including a cornucopia of information on plant medicine in my upcoming issues as it is clear to me that we are irrefutably returning to grass roots. And speaking of grass, let’s begin with the stigma of the term “grass”. The sheer numbers of older people using plant medicine is rising dramatically. It’s no longer called grass or about rolling a joint to get high. Cannabis is used therapeutically for many conditions and ailments, including epilepsy, ADD, stress, insomnia, cancer treatments, and so much more. The list goes on and on. We currently spend an abundance of money and time searching for ways to reside on another planet. Meanwhile our Earth awaits us to wake up and spend the energy and time to learn what we can do to save our health and our planet. Out with the old stigmas and in with a new way of thinking. That’s a great way to start the New Year.

SUBSCRIPTIONS Subscriptions are available by sending $32 (for 12 issues) to the above address. Natural Awakenings is printed on recycled newsprint with soy-based ink.

I

am a water person. I grew up on Long Island and my summers were filled with visits to either the local Levittown community pools or the beaches. When I moved to Florida years later, I immediately fell in love with the warm salty ocean. Windsurfing, diving, snorkeling, sailing and swimming were definitely some of my fondest memories. I moved to San Diego after being immersed in the warm Atlantic Ocean for a decade. I remember my first attempted swim in the Pacific Ocean—it lasted less than five minutes. Not long afterwards, I took up surfing and made peace with having to wear a wetsuit. The transition was worth the sacrifice of having to bind myself in neoprene. Stand up paddle board is my newest favorite water sport and a fantastic way to float on the cold water. I’ve included some of my favorite quality surf products and services in my directory for my fellow water lovers. Speaking of floating, if you haven’t yet immersed yourself in a float tank, you need to make it a goal in 2017. Float tanks are a great way for everyone to enjoy the benefits of water floatation in a safe and controlled environment. You don’t need to know how to float, swim or be a water lover to enjoy the experience of floating at Float North County. Floating helps to relieve stress, reduce anxiety, fight addiction, relax, eliminate pain, and yes, even meditate. I hear it keeps getting better the more you float. I tried it once and loved it so much I can’t wait to return for future floats. Float North County is located at 991 Lomas Santa Fe Dr., Ste. D, Solana Beach. study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease in July confirms that physical activity in midlife can help reduce the chances of developing cognitive impairment in old age. Scientists studied data on the physical activity levels from 3,050 twins in Finland given questionnaires in 1975 and 1981. A phone interview more than 25 years later served as a follow-up cognitive evaluation, and the subjects were divided into three categories: cognitively impaired, suffering mild cognitive impairment or cognitively healthy. Individuals that participated in vigorous physical activity when they were middle-aged displayed lower levels of cognitive impairment compared to those that did less vigorous exercise.

Parents Use Complementary Health Care for Kids

T

Africa Studio/Shutterstock.com

he 2012 National Health Interview Survey, published in 2015, included a survey on the use of complementary medicine practices. Nearly 45,000 Americans were questioned, including more than 10,000 children between the ages of 4 and 17. The survey found that nearly 12 percent of children had used complementary medicine, either in a practice or product, during the year studied. The most common form of alternative medicine among children was natural supplements, such as fish oil, probiotics and melatonin. Chiropractic care and yoga were also popular choices. Researchers found that parents sought complementary approaches most often for children due to back or neck pain, musculoskeletal conditions, colds, anxiety, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder or insomnia.

Ayurvedic Program Improves Blood Chemistry

A

clinical trial from the University of California-San Diego School of Medicine found that participants in a six-day, ayurvedic-based, well-being program showed metabolic improvements in blood tests for inflammation, cardiovascular disease risk (CDR) and cholesterol levels. Study participants consisted of 119 healthy men and women between the ages of 30 and 80. Sixty-five experienced a panchakarma program, a detox and rejuvenation protocol involving a vegetarian diet, meditation, yoga, massage, herbal therapy and other healing therapies. The other 54 served as a control group. Blood was analyzed before and after the test period. The researchers, led by Dr. Deepak Chopra, found measurable decreases in 12 phosphatidycholines (cell-membrane chemicals) associated with cholesterol, inflammation, CDR and Type 2 diabetes risk. They acknowledge that due to the short duration of the trial, the immediate changes were likely attributable to the vegetarian diet; more research is needed to determine the complementary role of the other therapies. “It appears that a one-week panchakarma program can significantly alter the metabolic profile of the person undergoing it,” remarks Chopra.

Early Job Satisfaction Supports LongTerm Health

R

esearchers from Ohio State University, in Columbus, started with data from 6,432 participants in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, conducted in 1979, to study the impact that early job satisfaction has upon health as we age. The new study examined reports of job satisfaction on a scale of one (dislike very much) to four (like very much) for participants between the ages of 25 and 39. Then they compared the responses to mental and physical health reports measured after the participants turned 40. Those that reported low job satisfaction throughout their 20s and 30s exhibited higher levels of emotional problems, depression, sleep problems and excessive worry. Individuals that started out satisfied with their jobs but became less satisfied over time also faced sleep and anxiety difficulties, but exhibited less depression. The participants that reported increasing job satisfaction in their 20s and 30s reported fewer mental health problems. The correlation between physical health after 40 and early job satisfaction was not as strong, but university associate professor of sociology Hui Zheng notes, “Increased anxiety and depression could lead to cardiovascular or other health problems that won’t show up until they are older.”

Julia Schopick on Effective, Affordable Medicine by Randy Kambic

What are some of the most significant natural alternatives you report on in Honest Medicine? The ketogenic diet is one standout because it was the standard of care for children with epilepsy in the 1920s— until pharmaceutical companies began to produce lucrative anti-seizure medications; then its use diminished 10

through a lack of proponents in the medical field. Its use was revived in the 1990s due to the efforts of Jim Abrahams, a Hollywood writer/director, father of a child with epilepsy and one of my heroes. I found small studies that proved that the ketogenic diet successfully stops children’s seizures nearly 70 percent of the time. This highly effective alternative has none of the negative side effects of anti-seizure drugs. Most doctors aren’t in favor of the diet approach and instead often prescribe affected children up to three or four meds as an easier option. The diet follows Hippocrates’ dictum, “Let food be thy medicine.” Another standout is intravenous alpha lipoic acid, pioneered since the 1970s by Dr. Burt Berkson, who used it mainly for end-stage liver disease and diabetic neuropathy. He saved many people from needing liver transplants with infusions of this powerful, versatile antioxidant. photo by Keith Peterson

F

ollowing up on the success of her bestselling book Honest Medicine: Effective, Time-Tested, Inexpensive Treatments for LifeThreatening Diseases, Julia Schopick plans to spread awareness of the efficacy of low-dose naltrexone (LDN) in treating autoimmune and other ailments later this year with a new book co-authored with professional writer Don Schwartz. Her first book, endorsed by many leading integrative health practitioners, earned the top National Indie Excellence Award for Alternative Medicine. It taps into nearly 200 scientific studies, with her research into innovative treatments driven by a quest that she and her late husband both believed added 15 years to his life after a terminal prognosis at age 40. The former English teacher at Long Island University and Virginia State University, now an Oak Park, Illinois resident, has contributed to the American Medical Association publication AM News, writes online and print guest columns and shares her journey in media interviews.

rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and Parkinson’s, because all of them have an autoimmune component if they are not directly autoimmune diseases. Similarly, the ketogenic diet is now being studied as a treatment for cancers, especially brain tumors, brain injuries, autism, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Intravenous alpha lipoic acid is also used to address autoimmune diseases, some cancers and other conditions.

Are you finding that people are increasingly moving away from drugs and, if so, why? Yes. The norm used to be that patients followed their doctors’ orders without question, which routinely entailed prescription drugs. Today, people are realizing that drugs often come with horrendous side effects. Consider, for instance, that ads for some injectible treatments for autoimmune diseases caution against side effects of cancers, including lymphomas. A side effect of some multiple sclerosis drugs is a serious brain infection called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or PML. People are listening closely, reading and researching their health issues, and don’t want risky side effects, especially when safer options are available.

In dealing with chronic illnesses, how crucial is it for caregiver and patient to maintain a positive, optimistic attitude?

Multiple studies, like those referenced in Mind Over Medicine, by Dr. Lissa Rankin, and Radical Remission, by Kelly Turner, Ph.D., show that a positive state of mind is crucial to healing. One of the Did anything surprise you? benefits I report in my book is that paI chose to include effective treatments tients and caregivers will do even more that are non-toxic and inexpensive. I research looking for alternatives when didn’t realize that several of them were doctors tell them nothing else can be effective for many different conditions. done. And many find healing treatments; For example, LDN has been used there are many such cases reported in since the mid-1980s to treat autoimmy book. I like the African proverb, mune diseases, of which there are more “When you pray, move your feet.” than 100; it also treats some cancers and AIDS. Research shows good results Randy Kambic is a freelance writer and for conditions as varied as multiple editor in Estero, FL, and regular contribsclerosis, lupus, Crohn’s disease, utor to Natural Awakenings magazine. CBD Facts You Need to Know by Bert Telles

C

annabidiol, or CBD, is one of the key ingredients in cannabis. CBD is one of more than 60 compounds unique to the marijuana plant and grouped under the umbrella term "cannabinoids". CBD and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are the most common cannabinoids in the cannabis plant and are therefore the most widely studied. CBD does not get you high like THC can. CBD can be made from medical marijuana plants or industrial hemp plants. Industrial hemp, when grown in other countries, can be imported legally into the United States, making it easier for consumers to get high quality CBD treatment. CBD and THC levels vary between plants. Marijuana plants grown for recreational use tend to be high in THC and varying amounts of CBD. Industrial hemp plants are very low in THC and high in CBD. It is legal to purchase CBD made from industrial hemp plants for use in any state without a prescription. Scientific studies show CBD provides therapeutic medicinal benefits. A healthy appetite is vital to a healthy body, especially when the body is healing. Some illnesses

decrease the appetite to the point of preventing the body from healing itself. According to the National Cancer Institute, CBD stimulates appetite and is therefore therapeutic from this standpoint. In the human body, CBD binds to cannabinoid receptors in the body. Scientists believe these receptors play an important role in regulating feeding behavior. CBDs stimulate appetite when they dock onto these receptors. According to a 2013 review published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, CBD soothes nausea and vomiting, acts as an anti-oxidant to reduce free radicals that cause neurodegenerative disorders, and works as an anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling. CBD also relieves pain and may work to reduce chronic anxiety and depression disorders. These benefits of CBD are also helpful for patients struggling with temporary anxiety and depression

resulting from a more serious medical condition. The effects of CBD on children with uncontrolled seizures is currently under investigation. Study participants suffer symptoms resistant to conventional treatments. Many participants have Dravet syndrome, a condition that begins in early childhood and causes frequent, disabling seizures on a daily basis. Even with the wave of states legalizing medical marijuana, many physicians are still reluctant to prescribe cannabinoids because they are not sure what dosages to prescribe. After all, most medical schools never cover CBD in their pharmacology courses. Medical scientists are just now developing dosing schedules for medical marijuana, medicinal hemp and their extracts, including CBD. CBD-rich hemp oil comes in various concentrations and forms, including liquid hemp oil, hemp oil as a thick paste, oil in capsules, sublingual tincture drops or sprays, salves for topical use, edibles as in candy or gum, and CBD vapor from vaporizers similar to e-cigarettes. Can Holistic Cannabis Change Your Life and Career? by Donna Shields, MS, RDN

HEALING SANCTUARY GRACE MUTKA’S HEALING SANCTUARY, ENCINITAS

Grace Mukta, Reiki Master, Intuitive Energy Healer, Yoga Therapist 760-688-2233 GraceMukta.com Grace Mukta offers an eclectic healing approach, combining John of God’s crystal bed chromotherapy, sacred sounds and reiki. She also offers readings and spiritual counseling.

A

s healthcare practitioners or consumers, we spend countless hours searching for proven, side-effect-free remedies for a multitude of health issues seeking the ideal solution. When it comes to taking personal control of your health and well-being, there’s one tried and true natural source of healing that can no longer be denied—medical cannabis. Cannabis is an ancient medicinal herb, just like holy basil and ashwagandha. Yet, despite proof of its therapeutic properties, this ancient herb is shrouded in misinformation. And, even when used as a treatment, it’s typically used in the allopathic model much like a pharmaceutical—as a bandage approach. Ideally, it should be viewed in the holistic healing model. If you’re like many people, you’re seeking legitimate, trusted answers to your questions such as: What are cannabinoids and how does the body use them to treat disease and maintain wellness? You’ll be amazed at the therapeutic possibilities for improving symptoms and feeling better. What is clinical endocannabinoid deficiency? Seldom discussed, it’s a foundational concept for improving health. What questions should you ask for buying safe, quality cannabis products? Understand testing procedures and labeling for savvy shopping. How do the anti-inflammatory benefits of cannabis help with chronic pain? Smoking, vaporizing, edibles, tinctures and topicals offer personalized delivery methods. Why use cannabis with other modalities such as nutrition, aromatherapy, yoga, acupuncture, breath work, chiropractic care and meditation? The synergy (known as the entourage effect) will get you feeling better, faster. How does cannabis address pain, insomnia, stress, anxiety and PTSD? It reduces reliance on opioids and other pharmaceuticals with unwanted side effects. Get cannabis confident and competent in this emerging area of healthcare and join the cannabis revolution. It can change your life and your career path. The Holistic Cannabis Academy, powered by two registered dietitian nutritionists, based in Boulder, CO, is an online cannabis training program educating health professionals and consumers worldwide, looking at cannabis through a holistic lens.
