hese past few months have been rough on a lot of people I know. So many of us are dealing with schedule overwhelm, health issues, all kinds of things. My editor, Erin, recently felt she had a case of “too-much-itis”. Much of what she had going on was really good things, just too much of them. This just goes to show you that there really can be too much of a good thing. When we do anything to the extreme, we can easily set ourselves up for physical, emotional and mental overload. I’m making a concerted effort to avoid dealing with this aftermath. My goal is to spend more time unplugging, detoxing and getting back to nature. As I write this, I’m currently downsizing my living arrangement and working on ways to slow my pace down so I can spend more time enjoying the moments of my day. It’s much healthier in the long run as the alternative really can lead to health issues—including PTSD. Many people believe that PTSD is limited to war veterans, but it’s really trauma resulting from any overwhelming life experience. When we’re overwhelmed and traumatized from events in our lives, self-medication can easily emerge and develop into substance abuse. It can easily turn into a dual diagnosis. Triggers can be places, people and events that are associated with the trauma.Once we realize what the source of our triggers are, we can learn how to avoid them in order to overcome their effects on our well-being. One powerful thing we can all do is learn how to detox with food, people, places and events. Changing your diet is a wonderful jump start. So is changing what you allow into your mind space. Personally, I had to shut down the constant barrage of media. Bombing, war, exploitation of Mother Earth, political injustices, global change, and trying to keep up with it all became too much. Rather than succumb to too-much-itis, I made a conscious effort to reduce my exposure to this negativity. It’s been so helpful! In addition, I continue my quest for alternative modalities that can help me achieve inner peace. I recently twice saw the film Beatrix at Dinner (see page 10). I believe the message conveys a good example of human bombardment and the effect it has on us all as a whole and individually. While a constant barrage of information has become a way of life for younger generations, I see many older folks striving to return to simpler times. I am grateful for the years I had in nature with my family growing up. I know our camping trips will be deeply rooted in my children and me forever. We all need our feet planted firmly on the ground. Please continue to share your suggestions on healing ourselves and our environment by sending your ideas to Publisher@na-sd.com. Meanwhile enjoy your summer and have a happy Fourth of July celebration.

The site also features a dynamic search function so members can edit and view search results on the same page in real time, plus the ability to save and edit favorite searches more easily. Supporting Your Spiritual Awakening in Encinitas

communityspotlight ENJOY a NOURISHING BREAKFAST at LOTUS CAFE and JUICE BAR by Erin Lehn Floresca

I

f you ask Carl and Johanna Wright, owners of Lotus Cafe and Juice Bar in Encinitas, what brings them joy, they’ll probably share stories about their numerous trips to India and more recent excursions to the California desert. They also enjoy peaceful yoga and meditation sessions, experimenting with new culinary creations, and delighting in a hearty, nourishing breakfast. All it takes is one visit to Lotus Cafe and you’ll immediately notice how they’ve infused these passions into their restaurant’s theme. With a hunger to continue evolving the café’s offerings, the pair has gone to great lengths to share their love of the day’s first meal by providing an outstanding breakfast dining experience. For starters, this popular healthy eating establishment, voted “2017’s Best of Vegan in San Diego” from Trip. com, now opens at 7 a.m. “This way you have plenty of time to enjoy an energizing meal to be awake and ready to face the day,” says Johanna, who shares that their scrumptious breakfast menu includes items such as the popular Artichoke Scramble, Vegan Tofu Scramble, Coconut French Toast and Vegan Buckwheat Pancakes. “The Coconut French Toast made with eight grain bread or sourdough with a side of fruit is really a treat. It’s one of our most popular breakfast items.”

The pair shares that several of the dishes, including the Balboa Burrito and Huevos Rancheros, are so hearty they make an ideal brekkie following a morning surf session. The Balboa Burrito, a local favorite, consists of free-range scrambled eggs, cheddar, breakfast potatoes, avocado and house-made salsa fresca all tucked into an organic whole wheat chapati. “You can opt to add in one of our proteins including turkey sausage or bacon, veggie sausage or soy bacon. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu; I think you will love this breakfast,” says Carl, who notes that many of the menu items are named after some of his favorite places in Encinitas. Lotus Cafe also offers generously sized Acai and Pitaya Bowls blended with your option of organic apple juice, almond milk or soy milk with blueberries and banana. “We also top each bowl with fresh fruit, coconut and organic granola and honey,” says Johanna. Another way this energetic couple embraces the local culture is by supporting local companies. On a recent trip to the California desert, Carl and Johanna stopped for a cup of Joe at the Joshua Tree Coffee Company. “We struck up a conversation with the owner, Royce, who told us his favorite restaurant in Encinitas was Lotus Cafe. We immediately hit it off. We also fell

in love with his coffees and totally support his coffee brewing philosophy,” explains Johanna. “I’ve never had coffee that has as much flavor as this coffee,” agrees Carl, who shares that he and Johanna enjoyed it so much, they now offer Joshua Tree Coffee Company’s First Roast organic coffee to their customers. “It’s our ‘house’ brand. We’re proud to be the only restaurant in Encinitas to offer this incredible coffee.” For those who’d prefer an alternative breakfast beverage, Lotus Cafe’s juice bar offers fresh fruit and vegetable juices, wheat grass and ginger shots, as well as an extensive smoothie menu. In addition, drink offerings include Indian Masala Chai tea with ginger and cardamom. The recipe, featuring authentic spices, is made twice daily from scratch. This delectable tea, a quintessential embodiment of the café’s cultural blend, was crafted by Carl, who worked on the recipe for six months to perfect it. Not an early bird but still a breakfast aficionado? No problem, as the café features an all-day breakfast menu. “For dinner, my personal favorite is the Artichoke Scramble with a salad instead of potatoes and toast,” says Johanna. Carl and Johanna pride themselves on providing something for everybody at every meal. While the menu significantly emphasizes plantbased dishes, Cafe Lotus also offers fish and poultry options, along with a wide variety of gluten-free selections. Diners can either eat inside the comfy restaurant or outside on the largest outdoor dining area in Encinitas. The patio, one of the largest in North County, features approximately 100 seats, including several large tables for parties of up to 10 people. “It’s a wonderful, pet-friendly patio that’s open all day. It’s a great place to happily enjoy a healthy meal with your family or friends,” adds Carl. Lotus Cafe and Juice Bar is located at 765 S. Coast Hwy. 101, Encinitas. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Call 760-479-1977 for more information. To see their entire breakfast menu, visit LotusCafeAndJuiceBar.com. natural awakenings

R

oadside Attraction’s new film Beatriz at Dinner, starring Salma Hayek, John Lithgow, Connie Britton, Jay Duplass, Amy Landecker, Chloë Sevigny, David Warshofsky and John Early, opened in theaters nationwide on June 23. Save Whales from Seismic Blasting in the Atlantic

T

he Trump administration has proposed permits for dangerous large-scale seismic blasting off the Atlantic coast, from Delaware down to Florida. Seismic airguns are a dangerous and destructive method for oil companies to test for the presence of oil and gas under the ocean. Scientists have determined that using these deafening airguns can injure or even kill whales, dolphins and many other species of wildlife. But first, the administration—specifically, the Department of Commerce—is inviting public comments on their proposal. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has created a form to be sent to Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. Fill out the form to let him know you reject these permits and to keep our Atlantic coast off-limits to Big Oil. The mission of the NRDC is to safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals, and the natural systems on which all life depends.

Tart Cherry Aids Runner Performance

A

study of distance runners by Texas A&M University, in College Station, determined that short-term supplementation of dried tart cherry powder improved running times, decreased inflammation and increased muscle metabolism and immunity. The researchers divided 27 endurance-trained young adult athletes into two groups. Eleven participants were given a daily powdered tart cherry supplement for 10 days, and 16 were given a rice flour placebo. All completed a half-marathon near the end of the 10-day trial. The researchers tested fasting blood samples and a quadriceps muscle soreness rating prior to the run, 60 minutes after the run and 24 and 48 hours post-run. The tart cherry group reported 13 percent faster average running times, as well as significantly lower inflammatory markers. They also reported 34 percent lower quadriceps soreness prior to the run. Tart cherry supplementation also increased immunity and resulted in better muscle metabolism.

PLANT MEDICINE

Mind Exploration for Answers and Healing with Psychenaut

MIKE “ZAPPY” ZAPOLIN by Erin Lehn Floresca

San Diego Edition

about it. Were some religious experiences tied to psychedelic plant medicines? And, could taking them induce a similar spiritual experience in me?” Zapolin’s conversation with Chopra made it clear that there was more he needed to experience. “I realized the part that was missing was that I was searching for happiness outside of myself. And maybe, I’d never be truly happy until I went inside,” he says. Armed with the intent of expanding his consciousness, Zapolin decided to try plant medicine and assembled a film crew and cast—including famed actress Michelle Rodriguez—to document the journey. “About a dozen of us in total hiked the Inca Trail to sit with a shaman and drink Ayahuasca and San Pedro tea. It was a very powerful experience which left me with no doubt that there absolutely is a spiritual component to these plant medicines— they’re not just drugs. These plant medicines are very healing on a physical, emotional and spiritual level.” That initial ceremony breathed new life into Zapolin. “I recognized this ancient wisdom may be the answer to so many of our modern problems. In addition to more mind exploration experiences, including Ibogaine and ketamine treatments, he incorporated meditation and breathwork into his life. He also became the spiritual director of the Kismet Clinic, a holistic ketamine treatment center in South NA-SD.com

Florida. “All of this has totally opened me up. I’m not resisting anything anymore,” he declares. “I realized that what I thought were some of the worst possible experiences in my life turned out to be the best things that ever happened to me. If I would have known this earlier, I would have been more relaxed in my life.” Because of his affinity for going within for answers and healing, Zapolin is now spearheading a movement. His latest venture, Mind Army, advocates for the rights of each of us to go inside our own minds through the use of organic and synthetic compounds like Ayahuasca, ketamine, Ibogaine, LSD and psilocybin mushrooms. “That’s where the answers to so many of our problems can be found. And we’re demanding for the Constitutional right for us to legally and safely access those answers. We only see about 1 percent of reality; the other 99 percent is an illusion. When more of us can overcome this illusion and tap into the reality of truth, we can overcome many of our contemporary society’s issues.” Zapolin’s work is quickly gaining traction. His riveting documentary film The Reality of Truth, which explores the relationship between spirituality,

ward-winning documentary filmmaker, conscious entrepreneur and plant medicine advocate, Mike “Zappy” Zapolin, had an idyllic upbringing. “I was raised in a good home and always had a lot of encouragement from my family. After graduating from college I made the money, fell in love, started a family. I was living the ‘American dream’,” he explains. So imagine his surprise, when after achieving so many societal milestones by his late 20s, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. “Here’s a guy who had it all, according to society’s standards; and yet, I still felt unfulfilled.” So Zapolin, never one to turn down an opportunity for growth, set out to discover exactly what was missing. While soul-searching, Zapolin recalled some profound psychedelic experiences he’d had in his youth. “I wondered if psychedelics should be part of the methodology I employed to seek answers,” he says. But it wasn’t until 2008 while re-reading the Bible with his alternate perception that it hit him so clearly. “I was reading about God providing the Israelites with manna from heaven during their period of wandering in the desert when it struck me—could this manna actually be mushrooms?” pondered Zapolin, who then called up his friend Deepak Chopra to discuss the possibility of psychedelics being mentioned in the Bible. “I couldn’t stop thinking

religion and plant medicine, recently won the Amsterdam Film Festival’s Van Gogh award. In addition to documenting his Inca Trail adventures, the film features counsel from top thought leaders like Deepak Chopra, Ram Dass, Marianne Williamson and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. With almost one million views on YouTube and countless film screenings around the globe, the film is making its mark. “One of the most gratifying aspects has been hearing how the movie has literally saved people’s lives,” he shares. “I’ve had people come up to me and tell me that they felt hopeless. But, the movie spoke to them and they went off to journey with the plants instead.” Zapolin realizes that using psychedelics for psychotherapy is a controversial subject, but he feels that it’s timely. “More people than ever are being called to journey within for answers and healing. It’s amazing! We need a critical mass of people to go inside their minds,” he asserts. “When they do, they’ll get a deeper sense of self, shift their perspective and gain more empathy for the world around them. It’s so much easier to solve problems when we can experience true empathy.” Zapolin shares that the journey is there for everybody. “Whether it’s a trip to Peru or Costa Rica to sit with a shaman, or a trip to a ketamine clinic in the U.S., you just have to put yourself in the right setting. Know that you’re going to heal and expand your consciousness and that whatever you learn is going to be great.”

to Cleanse Body & Mind

Take Toxins Out of Your Life by Meredith Montgomery

T

he term “detox” has been gaining traction in health circles, but cleansing practices have existed for millennia, ranging from Egyptian hydrotherapy to Medieval Lenten practices and Native American fasting, smudging and sweat lodges. The truth is that we need cleansing now more than ever—to rid our bodies of chemical overload and our minds of negative thinking. The Environmental Defense Fund has counted more than 100 chemicals produced in the U.S. that are present in everyday products and hazardous to humans and the environment. “Our body is a natural detoxifier, ridding itself of toxins through pooping, peeing, sweating and shedding skin. But in our current toxic overload situation, it’s not always an efficient process,” observes Deanna Minich, Ph.D., an author and functional nutritionist in Washington state. Some experts believe many commercial detoxification programs are unsafe, extreme and ineffective. “Psychologically, a short-term cleanse can act as a stepping stone if you’re eating

fast food and donuts every day,” says Dr. Michael Greger, a Washington, D.C., physician specializing in clinical nutrition and author of How Not to Die. “What matters more is longterm—what you’re eating a decade from now. No quick fix is going to do it, it’s a lifestyle change.”

Feed Your Microbiome

When the microbiome becomes depleted, overall health is affected. Dr. Robynne Chutkan, a gastroenterologist at Georgetown University Hospital, founder of the Digestive Center for Wellness, in Washington, D.C., and

We’re all exposed to toxins, but if our inner terrain is healthy, our body can flush them out, so we won’t get sick. ~Robynne Chutkan

Get Dirty

“Health and wealth have become associated with cleanliness, yet the opposite is probably true,” assesses Chutkan. “Kids come in from the playground to use hand sanitizers and eat processed snacks. Instead, discard the microbiome-disrupting sanitizer and pro-

author of Gutbliss and The Microbiome Solution, explains, “The GI tract is the body’s engine, and microbes are the worker bees that operate the machinery so that digestion and toxin removal can happen.” She recommends switching to a plant-filled diet to effectively repopulate the microbiome and be aware of how food is grown. “Much storebought produce, even organic options, is grown in depleted soil. Seek out biodynamic farmers that prioritize nutrient-rich soil to foster microbes,” Chutkan says. Even planting a couple of herbs or microgreens on the kitchen windowsill can make a difference. “Just picking those herbs and getting your hands in healthy dirt increases your exposure to health-promoting microbes.”

vide fresh vegetables for them to eat outside. We don’t want kids exposed to any serious pathogens, but getting a little dirty is essential.” Studies have found that children with pets are more likely to have fewer allergies and infections and take fewer antibiotics than those living in pet-free households (Clinical & Experimental Allergy and Kuopio University Hospital, Finland). Pets that venture outdoors bring healthy microbes inside; so does fresh air, which purifies poorer quality indoor air. Chutkan also warns of excessive bathing. “When we scrub ourselves, we rub off microbes and naturally occurring oils; unless we’re filthy, we just need to gently rinse.” Marketers convince consumers that products with toxic ingredients are necessities, but coconut oil, apple cider vinegar and honey can effectively replace many toiletries.

“The digestive system is responsible for delivering nutrients and escorting dangerous toxins out of your body; if you can’t digest well, you can’t detoxify well,” he says. Unlike drastic fasts and juice cleanses, which can deplete nutrients, he recommends stimulating fat metabolism with a cleanse that starts each morning with melted ghee followed by a simple nonfat diet throughout the day. According to research published in Alternative Therapies in Health and

Medicine, ghee, a clarified butter, has been proven to remove environmental toxins by attaching to toxic fats. Kitchari, the staple of the meal plan, is a nourishing and easy-to-digest, porridge-like blend of beans, rice and Indian spices. “When you eat a mono diet of just kitchari, your body can transfer the energy that normally goes toward digestion into cleansing and healing other systems,” says Douillard. For those not ready to maintain such a limited diet,

Burn Fat Cells

According to ayurveda, burning fat fuels detoxification because toxins from preservatives, pollutants, pesticides and other damaging chemicals are stored in our fat cells. When fat is metabolized and used as an energy source, the toxins are released, ready to be flushed out. “When we’re not burning fat, toxins can accumulate, cause congestion in the lymphatic channels, overwhelm the liver and ultimately be deposited back into fat cells or stored in the arteries, heart and brain,” comments Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner Dr. John Douillard, of Boulder, Colorado. He’s the author of Eat Wheat and a former director of player development and nutrition advisor for the New Jersey Nets professional basketball team.

Reboot with a Quick Cleanse

To stimulate the body’s natural ability to burn fat, Douillard recommends a four-day, at-home detox cleanse.

he recommends a polydiet with the option to add seasonal steamed vegetables, oatmeal and other gluten-free grains.

Few Snacks, More Water

Work toward eating three meals a day—a light breakfast, big lunch and light and early dinner—without snacking in-between, and fasting for 13 hours each night. Douillard notes, “This regimen should be maintained beyond the cleanse because it gives the body a chance to use up its carbohydrates—its normal, go-to fuel—and switch to its calmer, more stable, detoxifying fuel—body fat.” Adapt the cleanse to avoid strain, because when under stress, the lymphatic system shuts down and the body stores fat and toxins. “If three meals a day with no snacks is not possible yet, have a nonfat high-protein snack and plan to eat more protein at your next meal,” suggests Douillard. “Or start with four meals, and work your way down to three.” Aim to drink half your healthiest body weight in ounces of room-temperature water every day, while also sipping warm-to-hot water—believed to soften the intestinal tract, move the lymph and hydrate the cells more effectively than cold water—every 10 to 15 minutes for two weeks. Plain water has a hydrating effect that not even lemon water can replicate.

Emotional Release

“Toxins are best understood less as poisons than as barriers—obstacles to the life and health we truly want,” says Minich. As a functional medicine nutritionist, she believes that food as medicine is only one aspect of full-spectrum health. Her approach revolves around clusters of nutritional, anatomical, psychological and spiritual life issues that can be jointly detoxified, supported and healed. “Good eating alone will not necessarily solve our emotional woes or stop our limiting beliefs and toxic self-talk,” she explains in Whole Detox, a book based on a whole-life, whole-systems, whole-foods approach to detoxification. “We need to remove all the barriers that impede our growth. Limiting thoughts, as well as heavy metals and pesticides, are toxic barriers that weigh us down, sapping energy that might be used for better things.” Her 21-day program is designed to establish long-term lifestyle changes with simple habits. She recommends monitoring our emotions and tracking thoughts with daily writing exercises. “Look at yourself like you’re examining a food label to get to the root of limiting patterns,” she says, encouraging questions such as, “Is this thought healthy for me?” or, “Do I want this thought in my being?” Be mindful of speech as well; swearing, exaggerating and interrupting can have deleterious effects, while uplifting affirmations can inspire positive actions.

She attests that visualization can help prevent the creative self from shutting down, another aspect of toxicity. “Be intuitive and imaginative; allow creative expression to flow. Before you can manifest what you want in life, you have to envision it.” Minich wants patients to invite introspection by taking a few minutes each day to be in solitude and silence, allowing meaning and purpose to surface. Daily stress relief practices such as meditation, yoga, self-massage and mindful breathing can foster stress reduction. “Life shouldn’t feel like an emergency. We need to navigate around stress so we’re not inundated by it,” counsels Douillard. By extracting toxins through sweat and circulating nutrients, physical activity is equally important for detoxification, but it’s also a form of self-love. “It expands your sense of possibilities, freeing you to go where you will and to carry burdens lightly,” Minich says. In this age of personalized medicine, Minich encourages patients to focus on the parts of a detox program that they need most, whether it’s diet, exercise, massage, emotional wellbeing or spirituality. She reminds us that the desire and need to cleanse is universal. “Detox is as old as humankind.” Meredith Montgomery publishes Natural Awakenings of Gulf Coast Alabama/Mississippi (HealthyLiving HealthyPlanet.com).

Why Do Veterans Love QIGONG? by Qigong Practitioner Jeff Primack

igong Practitioner Jeff Primack has practiced qigong for 20 years and trains thousands of people annually at Qi Revolution seminars held across the United States. He shares that qigong helps overcome trauma with an “energetic solution” as opposed to pharmaceutical or psychological approaches. “A Qigong Master I studied with was imprisoned by the Chinese government and while in a jail cell, he practiced qigong for many years and was strengthened. At age 80 he still practices,” says Primack. “The postures develop a ‘magnetic energy’ that gives peace, increased faith and creates a tangible increase in energy on command.”

“QIGONG is a very positive natural modality we are proud to offer for our men and women who served our country.” Alina Mayo, MD – Veteran’s Hospital – Bay Pines, FL 20

San Diego Edition

Dr. Alina Mayo, MD, of the VA Hospital in Bay Pines, Florida, says that qigong with Supreme Science Qigong Center instructors has been well received at the hospital. “When veterans do qi breathing, trust issues and whether the teacher is also a vet becomes less important,” says Primack. “Old mind patterns are temporarily bypassed as the ‘feeling of qi’ is strong enough to give a natural high. Many vets report this has been invaluable to replace harmful addictions. Skeptical views on qi are instantly overcome by the tangible waves of vibration that dissolve tension and relax tight muscles.” Todd Nichols is a brave teacher sharing Breath Empowerment with more than 1,000 veterans. “Sometimes in lockdown facilities where chairs are held down with bags of sand it can be challenging to lead qigong breathing. Frequent outbursts and flickering florescent lights compound the difNA-SD.com

ficulties of teaching in the VA buildings themselves. Veterans are guarded and apprehensive,” explains Primack. “Todd draws them in and challenges them to take huge breaths, swallow it and hold it in their belly. A crammed room becomes momentarily silent, smiles and then scattered giggles. All it takes is their breathing participation and it works.” Primack shares that while traumatic memories are not erased, their grip on muscles and mind is temporarily lessened long enough for veterans to realize they have control over their mind with their breath. “Our technique 9-Breath Method oxygenates to the core creating a wave of peace that shuts down over-thinking. Breath Training is the best thing veterans can use to regulate stress without drugs.” Qi Revolution is the event where most people first encounter Primack and his instructors. “When hundreds of people do qigong in one room, a profound group energy is created. It quickens people’s ability to feel qi and progress. We keep the conference price affordable and free of vendors to maintain integrity and focus at our trainings,” he shares.
