n According to WebMD.com, charcoal grilling of meat can expose us to two potentially cancer-causing compounds—polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that form when fat from meat drips onto hot coals and are “deposited on food courtesy of flame-ups and rising smoke,” and heterocyclic amines that “are produced when red meat, poultry and fish meet high-heat cooking.” Instead, consider using a closed-flame gas grill to reduce exposure to toxins and cook fresh and organic fruits and vegetables like zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, onions and mushrooms.

Midsummer is prime time for outdoor family meals, barbecues and picnics. Selecting the healthiest food, along with eco-friendly materials in preparing for the fun feasts, can fulfill a more environmentally sustainable lifestyle and conserve resources at the same time. n GreenAmerica.org recommends using organic cloth, reusable mesh or string produce bags when grocery shopping; use bamboo utensil sets and plastic straw alternatives made of stainless steel, food-grade silicone, bamboo or glass. n To keep uninvited flying pests like mosquitoes, flies and the like away from humans and food, apply natural repel-
n Both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warn against eating shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish due to high levels of mercury, and to consume no more than six ounces of albacore tuna per week for the same reason. Some studies point to avoiding farmed salmon due to potentially high amounts of PCBs. Bypass larger fish of the food chain; look for those that have earned the Marine Stewardship Council or Aquaculture Stewardship Council labels. n The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently estimated that between 30 to 40 percent of all food in the country is wasted. To improve this situation, use glass containers instead of plastic bags to store leftovers. Also consider sustainable food wraps like Bees Wrap (BeesWrap.com). Made from beeswax, organic cotton, jojoba oil and tree resin, they seal and conform to the shape of whatever food is being stored.

The inflamed gum condition known as gingivitis is fairly common and often mild, but can be a precursor of more serious periodontal disease linked to Alzheimer’s and rheumatoid arthritis. German researchers at the University of Freiburg tested 30 people: half in a control group that did not change their diet, and half that switched to a diet low in meat and processed carbohydrates and rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin D, antioxidants, plant nitrates and fiber. After four weeks, those on the plantbased diet had significantly less gum inflammation and bleeding. They also lost weight and had higher vitamin D levels.
Seniors that ate more than 10 grams— about two teaspoons—of nuts a day were able to ward off normal cognitive decline and even improve their cognitive functions by up to 60 percent, according to University of South Australia researchers. The study was based on 22 years of records of 4,822 Chinese adults ages 55 and older; 17 percent of them ate nuts every day, most often peanuts. These seniors had as much as 60 percent improved cognitive function compared to those that didn’t eat nuts, and they showed better thinking, reasoning and memory. “Nuts are known to be high in healthy fats, protein and fiber with nutritional properties that can lower cholesterol and improve cognitive health,” says study author Ming Li.
Try Cordyceps to Strengthen the Lungs People suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, can breathe easier by taking the Chinese medicinal fungus Cordyceps sinensis, a new meta-analysis shows. Researchers at the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine conducted a review of 15 high-quality studies that involved 1,238 COPD patients and found that cordyceps significantly improved lung function, exercise endurance and quality of life with no report of any serious adverse effects. Cordyceps, which is said to relax and open the airways, has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as an anti-asthmatic, expectorant and cough suppressant.

Take B12 to Help With Parkinson’s New research has found the basic micronutrient vitamin B12 may be the first good tool for averting the hereditary form of Parkinson’s disease, which accounts for about 15 percent of such cases worldwide. In lab tests, an international team of scientists found that AdoCbl, one of the active forms of vitamin B12, inhibits the activity of a mutated enzyme linked to Parkinson’s. Inhibiting this enzyme appears to help stabilize dopamine release in the brain. Dopamine deficiencies manifest in the muscle rigidity and tremors that are hallmark symptoms of Parkinson’s. Another recent study from the University of California San Francisco that included non-hereditary Parkinson’s patients found that symptoms worsened more quickly in early-stage patients that had low B12 levels than in those with higher levels of the vitamin.

Hemp to the Rescue at Detox Sites
Cannabis is enjoying a renaissance of sorts, and one new application for hemp, the no-buzz industrial variety used in fabrics, oils and foods, is cleaning nuclear radiation from toxic soil and removing metals like cadmium, lead, mercury and other pollutants via phytoremediation. Allison Beckett, a cultivation expert at Marijuana.com, says, “Industrial hemp has been used in areas of high radiation, such as Fukushima, [in Japan,] with promising results. Not only does hemp pull toxic, heavy metals from the soil, it actually improves soil structure, making it usable as productive farmland again. Plus, hemp is a vigorous plant that absorbs CO2 rapidly, making it an encouraging solution to climate change.” Hemp phytoremediation has been used in Italy to clean up the small town of Taranto, where a steel plant has been leaking dioxin into the air and soil. The Pennsylvania Industrial Hemp Council and Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, are running a project to test the process in an arsenic-contaminated area in Upper Saucon Township that once harbored a zinc mine.
Researchers at King’s College London and the University of Suffolk have found a diverse array of cocaine, pharmaceuticals and pesticides in UK river wildlife, as described in a study published in Environment International. The team collected samples of freshwater shrimp from five catchment areas and 15 different sites across the agricultural county of Suffolk. Cocaine was found in all samples tested, and other illicit drugs, pesticides and pharmaceuticals were also widely recorded in the survey. Dr. Leon Barron, from King’s College London, notes, “Such regular occurrence of illicit drugs in wildlife was surprising. We might expect to see these in urban areas such as London, but not in smaller and more rural catchments. The presence of pesticides that have long been banned in the UK also poses a particular challenge, as the sources of these remain unclear.”

n his book Ho‘oponopono: Your Path to True Forgiveness, Dr. Matt James, PhD, Master Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and President of The Empowerment Partnership, an international firm dedicated to personal transformation, provides readers with a wealth of information about the ancient Hawaiian forgiveness process, ho‘oponopono. “Ho‘oponopono is about release. Releasing pain from the past that enslaves you in the present. Releasing old perceptions of those you love, so your relationships are alive and fresh. Even releasing those who have passed on so your grief can shift into a new appreciation,” shares Dr. James. Through consistent use of practices like ho‘oponopono, ancient Hawaiians were almost completely devoid of mental and emotional diseases. They knew what modern medical science has since verified: that holding a grudge affects you not only emotionally but is also related to physical issues like heart disease, compromised immune systems and increased stress. “Now that science understands the importance of forgiveness and release, many teachers and trainers are promoting ho‘oponopono. Their intentions are good, but they miss the mark,” explains Dr. James. “It’s not just about the words. For true healing, you need to understand how to tap into the energy of ho‘oponopono.” Within the pages of this book, readers will learn why emotional baggage is so toxic physically, and how to remove it; how holding grudges sabotages one’s dreams, and how to release any resentment; why relationships become stale, and how to bring vibrancy back to them; and how to turn grieving into love and joyful acceptance. Ho’oponopono Your Path to True Forgiveness with Matt James, PhD
D
r. Matt James, known to most as Dr. Matt, Master Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and President of The Empowerment Partnership, an international firm dedicated to personal transformation, credits his upbringing for his life’s work. Raised in Hawai’i, Dr. Matt’s parents instilled in him a belief in energy and consciousness. When he was growing up, energy work was a common discussion in his home says this longtime student of the healing arts, who first began meditating at the age of 5. “I saw my dad meditating and I wanted to emulate him. And the practice stayed with me,” says Dr. Matt. Throughout his childhood, Dr. Matt studied with many spiritual teachers. Not only was he entrusted with teaching Huna through the lineage of the Bray family, Dr. Matt was a longtime student of Uncle George Na’ope, Master Kumu in Hula who was honored as one of Hawai’i’s Golden Living Treasures. Around age 12, Dr. Matt attended his first fire walk with Tony Robbins, and by age 13 he was a certified Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) by Richard Bandler. In addition to practicing NLP, Huna and other healing modalities, Dr. Matt, along with his father, developed the Mental and Emotional Release (MER) process, a clinically researched collection of techniques that help people release stress, anxiety, fear and other negative emotions. Dr. Matt shares the wisdom he has gleaned over the years in multiple books, including one of his latest Ho’oponopono: Your Path to True Forgiveness. “I wrote this book in honor of my daughter Skylar, who lost her best friend in kindergarten. I truly believe that Ho’oponopono saved my daughter’s life,” he says, referring to the release techniques he shares in the book. Ho’oponopono, which means “to make right,” is a forgiveness technique practiced by ancient Hawaiians. Dr. Matt, however, says it’s more than that. “Ho’oponopono is about release. It’s releasing pain from your past that is currently enslaving you. It’s about releasing old perceptions of those that you are in relationship with.” Practitioners of this technique can even release emotional baggage tied to someone who has died which can help shift grief and any ill feelings toward that person into a new appreciation.

According to Dr. Matt, most of us are carrying around emotional baggage, and it’s negatively impacting the quality of our lives. “Holding grudges isn’t healthy. It sabotages our happiness and affects us emotionally. Plus, it’s physically toxic. Anger hurts the heart. Depression wrecks the immune system. A lot of people mistakenly think that by holding onto feelings like anger, we’re going to make the other person suffer. There is no Universe where that works. When we hold onto it, we are the ones who suffer.” The ancient Hawai’ians knew this, explains Dr. Matt. “They were almost completely devoid of mental and emotional diseases because they put such a high priority on releasing their baggage with techniques like Ho’oponopono.” And, he affirms, with consistent practice we can all release resentment and get to a similar place of love and joyful acceptance. Dr. Matt shares that everything begins with a belief in the power of our own minds. “The day that I realized it was ‘all in my head’ was a very liberating day. I remember a time when one of the attendees at one of our seminars came up to me and said, “That stuff that you teach, it’s all in your head!” And I told him, “That is so good that you recognize that!” He was a little confused. But it is all in our heads. “And the more tools we have in our toolbox to help us clear that baggage from our minds, the better,” says this daily practitioner of release work and meditation. There is one caveat, advises Dr. Matt. “You have to be ready to let it go. The biggest misconception is that if I let something go, then I’m condoning what happened to me. You must be able to reframe forgiveness. You’re not saying that you approve of the betrayal or misdeed nor do you need to maintain or re-establish a relationship with someone who harmed you. Forgiveness doesn’t erase what happened. It erases the negative hold that it has on you, so you are no longer a prisoner to that pain. And it’s easier to let go of that emotional baggage than most people think. The difficult part is taking action.” Dr. Matt asserts that once a person becomes comfortable with the process of Ho’oponopono, it becomes 100 percent effective. “It’s such a beautiful, effective process of releasing what doesn’t serve you. The lesson serves you and it’s hard to get the lesson when emotional baggage is weighing you down. It’s time to bring that baggage into the light where it can be healed. You really can transform your life with this simple healing modality. I’ve seen it happen thousands of times. You too, can empower your life and become the person you were always meant to be.” To purchase Ho’oponopono: Your Path to True Forgiveness, visit Amazon.com. HEALING Your Heart
Rewriting your Life Stories with Tris Thorp
G
rowing up in the outback of Alaska, Tris Thorp, author of the book Healing Your Heart: Rewrite your Story with Awareness and Intention, never would have imagined that one day she would be ‘living the dream’ with houses in Hawaii and San Diego, an annual trip to Italy with her amazing family, and a fulfilling career teaching others how to gain emotional freedom and more happiness. But that’s how the Universe works—when you know how to leverage its power. After leaving her Alaskan town at age 15, Thorp gravitated toward a vocation in the music industry where she stayed for over two decades. “It was typical rock and roll debauchery,” she recalls. “At some point, I realized that if I continued that lifestyle, it would eventually kill me. It became clear that I needed a healthier path.” Thorp took a leap of faith to change her life, and admits it was challenging. “I lost most of my friends and became homeless three different times.” Regardless of the obstacles, Thorp kept plugging on. “It was very lonely at times,” she affirms. “But I knew there was a better life for me. The Universe gives back what we are willing to put into it. I had to be willing to risk losing everything to be who I knew I could become.” Thorp’s healing journey eventually led her to the ideal people and circumstances to help heal her life, including a mentorship with Chopra Center co-founder, the late David Simon. “He was an amazing mentor to me,” shares this Vedic Master Educator and Reiki Master, who taught classes on Healing the Heart and Emotional Freedom with Simon. “He knew way before me that I’m meant to be a teacher. He said it was my dharma. But I wondered, ‘How can I lead others through something that I’m not sure I’ve led myself through?’ David saw my hesitation and suggested I do shadow work with Debbie Ford.” Eventually, Thorp became one of Ford’s certified breakthrough shadow coaches. “It’s funny that I had so much resistance to becoming a coach. Now I can’t imagine it any other way.” Thorp attributes the emotional healing she experienced to the tools she shares in her book. “Healing our heart is one of the hardest journeys we can embark on, and also the most rewarding. In this book, you’ll learn how to process emotions from past experiences in a safe way so that you can make peace with the past, release what no longer serves you, and gain emotional
freedom while creating a happier, more fulfilling life.” One of the tenets of Thorp’s style is practicing mindfulness. “We’re always striving for the next level. What’s the next big thing? We forget there is so much power in simplicity,” she says. “That’s where I did the work; it was in the slowing down, and it’s been an incredible journey.” Years after Thorp began her inner work deep dive, she met her future husband, Dr. Matt James. “I was so excited to meet this incredible guy who had all these releasing techniques,” shares Thorp, co-author of Mental and Emotional Release (MER) along with James. “My greatest healing occurred with the information I share in Healing Your Heart. Even deeper healing can occur when you also apply the releasing techniques that we teach,” shares this Master Practitioner and Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, hypnosis and Mental and Emotional Release Therapy. Healing your Heart, a compassionate guide for self-inquiry, allows readers an opportunity to rewrite their life stories, so they are no longer a victim to their past. “This book is all about emotions, what triggers them, and how holding them creates limiting beliefs,” explains Thorp, who shares that in her book, readers are guided through a process where they select an event from the past and unpack it. “Something happened in your past and your psyche turned it into a story which affects who you are today. You find out that it’s not really about what happened—it’s about what it made you believe about yourself,” she explains . “With compassionate inquiry, we explore what we created out of the experience, and more importantly, what wisdom can be gleaned.” Thorp shares that major life experiences—such as a breakup or death—are also major opportunities for transformation. “It’s like the story of the phoenix. Everything comes crashing down. You’re desperate to find your breath. Your center of gravity is spinning out of control. When you rise back up from that, you have a choice. Do I try to get even? Do I stay angry? Or do I go the path of leaning into love and finding compassion for myself and others?” She asserts that the healing process doesn’t mean we need to try to make sense of what happened to us. “It’s all about how we move through the process of healing. Whatever happened has happened. Now it’s time to rid ourselves of any emotional baggage that came with it. With awareness and selfcompassion, we can take back control of our emotional state.” With the daily practices illustrated in the book, Thorp assures us that we can reframe our stories and grow from our past experiences. “There are so many benefits to shaking off the heavy baggage. You’ll feel more alive, more inspired, and learn to take on life in a more positive way.” For more information, visit TrisThorp.com/healing-your-heart. Book purchasers will also receive a 3-part online mini-course in addition to joining a closed Healing Your Heart Facebook group. See ad, page 16. Qi
The Force Behind Blood Flow and Higher Intelligence
Interview with Qigong Practitioner Jeff Primack (Part 2 of 2)
Conducted by Publisher Damon Damato
DD: Why is Qigong Healing so profound compared to other remedial modalities?
JP: Qigong works directly with your life energy to a greater degree than yoga or traditional exercise by using slower movements. Postures are “rooted” in one place where grounding and electrical charges build stronger. Graceful hand motions move the Qi and blood in profound ways while the person is very relaxed. Qigong’s relaxation response allows for greater microcirculation in the frontal lobes of the brain. Qigong practice can improve intelligence and even deepen one’s connection with God, the Source of life.
DD: You coined the phrase, “Press on Qi!” Why is this emphasized so often in your healing forms?
JP: Press on Qi is describing subtle movement on the edge of your magnetic field. When a person practices Qigong and learns to press on the energy field, it immediately strengthens blood circulation, digestion and metabolism and improves important body functions. I trademarked the term Press on Qi as our way of expressing this idea unique to our Qigong style. 18

DD: How did your father’s work in the medical field impact you growing up as a child?
JP: My dad is a pharmacist at a hospital and he loves people. He knows pharmaceuticals have side effects and believes in preventing disease using food. At first, he didn’t believe in Qigong. Once he felt the energy for himself, he began practicing Qigong and studying Chinese medical models. My choice to enter the wellness field was influenced by my dad and his emphasis to a scientific approach. I have a healthy skepticism and present with scientific method.
DD: What was the driving force for you to absorb so much from the most respected masters of Qigong?
JP: As a graduate from University of Florida College of Business, I founded Supreme Science Qigong Center to be successful and took my job seriously. Many Qigong teachers I found did not provide the training I was looking for. I did a lot of research and found a Qi master, Paul Dong, who wrote the book Empty Force. I flew him from China to Florida in 2001, because he claimed to have practiced Qigong every day for over 20 years. We
arranged a seminar and I gathered a hundred people to hear Paul share his forms, which were lightyears ahead of any Qigong learned previously. His presence activated my Qi and I practiced more because of coming in direct contact with him. After Paul flew back to China, I craved to find another Qigong expert who could explain more. Master Weizhao Wu was my most influential teacher for Qigong and he practiced since age seven. Although he passed away, his memory lives in the most excellent posture corrections that he carefully gave. He would open my thumb and relax it so the tendons were not hard anymore. That thumb correction makes a huge improvement to Qi flow and has been passed to my forms.
DD: Through this process of education and discipline, how long did it take for you to create the Supreme Science Qigong healing forms?
JP: After five years traveling and producing seminars for other Qigong masters, I finally created my Level-1 Qigong Healing Form. It was first published in our books in 2003 and only a few dozen instructors memorized it, but by 2007 we had certified a thousand people to teach the routine. Our videos were “Qianimated” to show energy graphically and it assisted people in becoming sensitive to energy. In 2013, we upgraded our Qigong videos to HD animation and in 2017 we finally released our remastered Level-2 video with Ultra HD 4K animation. Spirit continues to reveal a better way to share these healing practices.
DD: Will participants get to experience these forms at the Qi Revolution event?
JP: All 3-levels of our Qigong program are shared in detail along with Breath Empowerment, Nine-Breath Method, Tui Na Acupressure, Foot Reflexology and Food-Healing. Qi Revolution is balanced in presentation and practice. After the event, most people choose to continue practicing Qigong from home.
DD: Fitness classes normally get me amped up. Strength Training you share at Qi Revolution challenges me, but it has more mastery of breath than any workout I’ve done. What is significant in your Qigong strength practices for longevity?
JP: Most important is to slow down breathing in Qigong Strength Training, but most athletes increase respiration when using force. Slowing breathing during pushups changes hormones we make. To demonstrate this relaxing skill during exercises, I performed 750 pushups with 20 students counting and making sure I went up and down all the way. Qi breathing allows for the ATP to replenish faster so that muscle contractions can occur sooner. This also dilates arteries and increases production of nitric oxide to lower blood pressure during strenuous exercise.
DD: If there was one take-away at the end of the Qi Revolution, what would you wish for each person to embody?
JP: The most important embodiment I’d like people to walk away with is that we can BREATHE through life’s challenges and allow God’s healing Qi to bring strength and guidance. Attendees will personally experience a higher energy from the Qigong. For the last 15 years, people write thanking us for the powerful breathing exercises at crucial life challenge points. Qigong helps people process stress, but most of all it brings us into a higher state of well-being. We deliberately make our seminar affordable at three-days for $199 so that more people can reclaim their Qi. See ad, page 31.
