I
mentioned in my recent May Women’s Wellness issue that June was going to be our men’s issue. However, apparently in the busyness of life, I didn’t realize that June, which used to be reserved for men’s health and wellness, has transformed to Livable Communities and Natural Beauty. So, let us welcome in this new theme! Having fun w friends & clients The article “Doing Nothing” in this month’s online issue resonated the most with me this month. Last month, I came down with pneumonia right as we were getting the magazine ready for the press—the most stressful time for publishers. I managed to get my publication to the printer on time, but boy, was I wiped out. After we went to the printer, I completely shut down and surrendered out of sheer necessity to heal. With the help of both Eastern and Western medicine, along with my ability to surrender, I beat this awful energy vampire of an illness. While sharing the story of my woes, I discovered how many others have also suffered through pneumonia at one point or another. It’s a bear of an illness to deal with, and hopefully my immune system is stronger for going through it. Oddly enough, there was an upside to being isolated and, because I had no energy, stuck inside my home for weeks. I ended up doing a whole lot of nothing. And you know what? I was taken to an unexpected place of heightened awareness. I realized that doing nothing, which is the polar opposite of what I normally do, is actually quite vital to my existence. My body appreciated it, more than I could have ever known. Whenever I felt anxious about my seclusion, Netflix helped me settle in. My daughter’s recommendation on the film Shameless was a hit. It portrays family dysfunction with truth and humor and an amazing cast. Ironically, the word “fun” is dead center in the spelling of dysfunction. We buried everything in the old days. Now we table everything and must monitor what our young children are exposed to. We swing the pendulum all the way to one side before coming back to par. Like in golf, we all have our own handicaps in dealing with life’s challenges. We all need to find what works best for our individual needs; for me its self-nurturing, down time and being in nature. I’m officially announcing the sale of Natural Awakenings San Diego (See ad, page 31). Meanwhile, I will continue to grow this wonderful publication, so the new passionate owner will have a strong foundation. I am manifesting the sale of my publication to be the springboard for Natural Awakenings’ branding in the entire state of California and the entire West Coast. Natural Awakenings is heavily saturated on the East Coast and its time for our coast to benefit, too. Mentorship is available for qualified people interested in becoming a publisher. Feel free to contact me. Every day is the first day of a new journey.

enise Reppenhagen, owner of Swell Yoga, invites all to enjoy Beach Yoga every Tuesday evening from 6 to 7:15 p.m. starting June 5 through September 25. “Vinyasa Yoga will be on the sand at D Street, in Encinitas. Head down the stairs to the beach and yoga will be held to the south of the stairs on the sandy overlook,” she says. “Take your yoga practice outdoors; nature is waiting! There’s nothing like doing yoga, oceanfront on the sand under the blue skies while watching seagulls fly overhead in Triangle pose. Be amazed by the waves, dolphins and ocean sounds. Saturate your body, mind and soul with the salty ocean air.” This seasonal offering happens during the summer months only, and starting in September, class will begin at 5 p.m. “This is your opportunity to challenge or take your yoga to the next level. No walls, no barriers, just nature surrounding you for this special summer event,” says Reppenhagen. Private sessions are available for yoga and cardio/strength workouts, too. Reppenhagen started her career path in fitness in the '80s. Inspired by an innate drive to live a life of health and fitness, she teaches a variety of classes including cardio, strength, yoga, Pilates and spin. With a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and a master’s degree in nursing, her knowledge of the human body is apparent in her classes where proper alignment and safety are key. AFAA and yoga certified, her classes are inspired by a "have fun" attitude and to get a great work out. Guided by many masters of yoga, and a background in fitness and Ashtanga yoga, she brings a strong yet graceful blend to the yoga practice by combining a variety of styles into her vinyasa yoga class. “The opportunity to share my love for healthy living, yoga and fitness is a privilege,” she adds. Cost: $10 or buy a practice book of 5 sessions for $40. For more information, call Denise at 760-420-1496 or find Swell Yoga on Facebook at Facebook.com/doyogagosurf.

Natural and Age-Defying
Acupuncture has been cited by the World Health Organization for conditions from allergies and asthma to back pain and infertility, but a lesser-known course of acupuncture treatment is facial rejuvenation. In Chinese medicine, every living being has “qi”, which is a kind of life force or energy. Acupuncture works by targeting the points on the body that are believed to have blockages of qi. These blockages cause illness and specific points of blockage relate to specific conditions. Facial acupuncture, like other acupuncture treatments, focuses on balancing qi and clearing blockages using extremely fine needles to alert your cells to pay attention to the area needled. Acupuncture also enhances healthy cell growth, creates an appealing facial glow, and promotes the production of collagen in the skin. Collagen, naturally produced by the body, reduces lines and wrinkles by cushioning skin cells, making skin soft and flexible. Facial acupuncture is commonly used to treat puffy eyes or dark circles, sagging of the neck or double chin, crow’s feet and acne. The best results are achieved through consistent treatment, as opposed to a one-time effort. For facial acupuncture, a schedule of 10 consecutive treatments about three days apart, or twice a week, is recommended. While it may take consistent sessions to diminish wrinkles, your face will look revitalized and have a healthy glow after just one treatment. Facial acupuncture can be combined with other holistic treatments such as Chinese herbs and foods rich in antioxidants, which have anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. The Pacific College of Oriental Medicine teaches acupuncture, massage and herbology at campuses in San Diego, New York and Chicago, including a new doctoral program. For more information, call 866-276-0717 or visit PacificCollege.edu. See ad, page 16.
In the first scientific study of facial exercise, 27 middle-aged women that performed specific facial muscle movements looked an average of two-and-a-half years younger in 20 weeks based on a standardized scale called the Merz-Carruthers Facial Aging Photoscales. By doing the exercises for 30 minutes each day or every other day, the fullness of both the upper and lower cheeks, in particular, of the women were significantly enhanced, report Northwestern University researchers. “The exercises enlarge and strengthen the facial muscles, so the face becomes firmer and more toned and shaped like a younger face,” says lead author Murad Alam, a medical doctor. Some of the study exercises can be found by searching the topic of Happy Face Yoga on YouTube.
Energy Drinks Hurt Youth Health More than half of teens and young adults that have slaked their thirst with energy drinks report consequently suffering negative health consequences, reports a new study from Canada’s University of Waterloo. Of 2,055 Canadian participants between ages 12 and 24, 55.4 percent said they had negative health events afterwards. Of these, 26.5 percent trembled and felt jittery, 24.7 percent had faster heartbeats and 22.5 percent noted “jolt and crash” episodes—a spell of alertness followed by a sudden drop in energy. Another 5.1 percent experienced nausea or diarrhea and 0.2 percent, seizures. Most respondents said they drank only one or two energy drinks at a time.

Humiston Wellness Rolfing®- Structural Method and Feldenkrais® Work When your neck or some other part of your body keeps hurting no matter what treatment has been applied to it, you will usually get lasting relief from Rolfing® or Feldenkrais® work, which systematically organizes the rest of your body so that place finally can relax. Karl Humiston was directly trained by Ida Rolf, PhD. Bonnie Humiston is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais® teacher and trainer, who studied directly with Moshe Feldenkrais for 10 years.
Fundamentally these methods work by restoring something that has been lost, by returning your body's structure and movement patterns to the "blueprint of perfection" that was given you in the beginning and the potential for which remains in you. When our work succeeds in restoring this, all kinds of problems get better because they cannot stay bad when your "blueprint" is restored. - Karl Humiston

Good for People and the Planet by John D. Ivanko and Lisa Kivirist

any people define a livable city as one that is easy to get around in by foot, bike or public transportation. Many also prioritize ready access to fresh, local, organic food via farmers’ markets and community gardens. Others champion affordable housing and cost of living factors, safe neighborhoods with a diversity of people, careful stewardship of clean air and water, and plentiful amenities, including considerable open space and natural settings. Many work to preserve and enhance a sense of place suited to the locale. Partners for Livable Communities, a national nonprofit in Washington, D.C., that renews and restores communities, maintains, “Livability is the sum of the factors that add up to a community’s quality of life, including the built and natural environments, economic prosperity, social stability and equity, educational opportunity and cultural, entertainment

and recreation possibilities.” The American Association of Retired Persons considers livable communities as age-friendly for young and old alike. Along with economic opportunities, a leading stimulus in moving to urban centers is, “More people are looking for a sociable environment where they can walk out of their door to the shops or transit and be among others they recognize who also recognize them,” observes Suzanne Lennard, director of the International Making Cities Livable Conferences, LLC, in Portland, Oregon. “People who have traveled abroad, especially to Europe, and tasted the quality of life possible in a truly livable, walkable, beautiful and sociable city, often want to find such a place to live themselves.” Following are a few examples of America’s many livable cities. More are transitioning and evolving as city planners, government officials, businesses and nonprofit community organizations strive to make their hometowns both people- and
Street-Scene Renaissance
In Pittsburgh, revitalization is transforming 10,000 parcels of vacant or abandoned land—some where steel mills formerly operated—into greenspace, bike lanes and other enticing and productive public areas. “Biking and our food scene have exploded,” says Chris Sandvig, director of policy with the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group, which advocates for equitable urban revitalization through their Vacant Property Working Group, helping communities access blighted areas for pennies on the dollar. “We’re now one of the top 10 bicycling commuter cities in the country. People also come here as food tourists due to vibrant local agricultural activity.” “A related ideal is to create compact, human-scale, mixed-use urban centers in the suburbs that are less expensive to construct—and thus remain more affordable— while placing shops, schools, parks, services, workplaces and public transit within walking and biking distance,” Lennard notes. “This ensures a healthy, affordable and high quality of life for all; suburban, as well as urban.” Fast-growing Carmel, Indiana, just north of Indianapolis, is following suit. “After years of watching the suburbs sprawl into subdivisions with large lawns, privacy fences and cul-de-sacs, we created a vibrant central core with apartments, townhomes, condos and new options for smaller homes—all within walking distance or a short bike ride to new places to work, shop and dine,” explains Mayor James Brainard. The design efforts serve people instead of cars. “Carmel has spent the last 20-plus years building more than 900 miles of trails and multi-use pathways, enabling residents to commute by bicycle to work and enjoy easy access to a growing number of parks and recreational areas,” says Brainard. To facilitate traffic flow, some 100 roundabouts replaced stoplights and four-way stops. “Reducing traffic congestion has improved our air quality, and saved gasoline and

lives.” A new, mixed-use downtown Arts and Design District includes a Center for the Performing Arts with a Center Green that hosts a farmers’ market in summer and an outdoor Christkindlmarkt and outdoor skating rink in winter. “The old way of doing things in which cities and towns sat back and let the market dictate how a community should be grown must come to an end,” remarks Brainard, advocating the benefits of local governance.
Smart City Advantages
Key elements of smart cities—sensors, cameras, data analytics and powerful networks that capture and relay vital information— help them become more energy-efficient or quicker to respond to environmental and residential issues. Such products highlighted the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, in Las Vegas. Reducing traffic can also contribute to safer highways and shorter commutes with decreased greenhouse gas emissions. “Citizens are using apps to monitor issues and alert city managers, improving the livability of their communities,” explains Steve Koenig, senior director of market research with the Consumer Technology Association. In Boston, the app BOS:311 allows residents to instantaneously notify government departments of pollution concerns, like blocked drains and other environ-
mental or community needs, feeding the information directly into the city’s work order system via their mobile phone. This real-time collaboration results in a cleaner, safer and healthier city. The Envision Charlotte project encompasses interactive kiosks in 64 businesses and government buildings citywide, gathering energy usage data for office buildings to increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. So far, energy consumption has dropped 19 percent, saving companies about $26 million. The program has strengthened economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability.
Nature in the City
Some cities have focused on the natural environment for improving local livability while mitigating contributions to climate change. Forested open spaces, wetlands and protected watersheds improve air quality, protect drinking water and buffer intense storms. Such areas also connect more people with nature and engage them in communal and healthy outdoor recreation. Portland, Oregon, boasts more than 10,000 acres of parks, plus an innovative Biketown sharing program that has facilitated 160,000 bike trips since its launch in 2016. The city’s Bike Bill requires all new streets to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians by design. Portland also embraces urban gardens and allows residents to raise
chickens, bees, goats or rabbits in their backyards. No one wants to live where pollution runs unchecked or water is unsafe to drink. Philadelphia’s Green City, Clean Waters program works to keep stormwater out of sewers and reduce rainwater runoff through decentralized soil-based and plant-based systems, including pervious pavement, green roofs and rain gardens. Begun in 2011, its goal is to reduce rainwater runoff by 85 percent by 2036. Rainwater has become a valuable community resource. The program is just one of many ways that the City of Brotherly Love is transforming itself into one of the greenest in the United States. Overseen by the city’s Office of Sustainability, Greenworks Philadelphia devises long-term sustainability strategies that encompass eight facets, including clean and efficient energy, carbon-neutrality and zero waste. Preparations are already underway to cope with a hotter, wetter future.
Preserving a Sense of Place
Making communities livable goes beyond infrastructure. Actions usually involve preserving, protecting and enhancing what appeals to residents. Santa Fe, New Mexico, is one example of many where livability priorities are guided by the values of its residents and its sense of place. “From our historic public square and

marketplaces to outdoor cafes, farmers’ markets and community festivals; from human-scale architecture and balanced transportation to pedestrian and bicycle networks, this place represents shared values,” says Mayor Javier M. Gonzales. “Santa Fe is also full of public art. The city is designed to be safe, creative and inspiring for young and old, families of all kinds and everyone else that comes to see us.”
Good Life as Kids See It
Ultimately, making cities move livable for children can make them highly livable for all. “Children need the same things from
a city that we all need, but their needs are greater than ours,” says Lennard. “The environment a child grows up in shapes their health and their mental and social development for the rest of their lives. Our modern, unwalkable suburban environments are contributing to childhood obesity, which has been widely linked to chronic diseases that in the past were only associated with old age.” She notes, “Children need the exercise of walking or biking to school. They need safe streets so they can become independent and explore their neighborhoods; sidewalks and other outdoor areas

Catching up with Michael Mitchell, Rolf Method of Structural Integration Practitioner by Erin Lehn Floresca
M
ichael Mitchell, owner of Body Solutions 101 in Solana Beach, loves reflecting on the evolution of his life. In his 20s, he left bustling Los Angeles and moved to Encinitas for its beach town vibe. “I love the ocean. It’s great for your health; I have to be near it every day.” While he spent years remodeling homes, and found the work to be rewarding, it was also stressful, and Mitchell dealt with common aches and pains associated with his profession. “Like many men, I suffered from the legitimate addiction to workaholism,” he says. “Because of it, lots of things in my life suffered. When I turned 30, I realized it was time to figure out some of my issues.” This awareness led him on a new path of healing and transformation. “All these anxieties and fears started coming to the surface. But, I was willing to go into it—even if it was uncomfortable. I never wanted pills or a quick fix,” he recalls. “I really just opened up my eyes to what I wanted out of life.” While Mitchell was taking an extended break in Hawaii, trying to figure out his life, a friend suggested he get "Rolfed." “I’d never heard of it before,” he says. “So, when I came back to Encinitas and was told, again, to get Rolfed, I paid attention.” He soon discovered local
Rolfing practitioner, Sherwood “Woody” Fulmor, and made an appointment to see him. “Woody was a very mature, integrated guy who created a humorous and safe environment for me while he pushed his hands into areas of tension like no one else ever had. He was actually the first male I could really talk to on a deep, deep level, which was powerful for me.” Mitchell’s Rolfing experience was nothing short of profound. “I felt a lightness I hadn’t felt in a long time. I knew after that first hour this was the career path for me,” says this skilled practitioner, who recognizes that many people liken the Rolf Method of Structural Integration to deep massage. “It’s much more complex and systematic,” he explains. “Rolfing is a form of soft tissue body work where the practitioner works on you from head to toe to find out what is pulling you out of balance. We’re going into the areas of tension and releasing them, so the body can began unwinding and reorganizing. Rolfing is all about recognizing patterns. It’s about going from uptight to upright and creating a friendship with gravity, so we move with ease.” According to Mitchell, we all have unrealized potential as human beings, but many of us aren’t motivated to discovering this truth. “We don’t come into this
world knowing how to love ourselves. But we can learn. Life is really exciting, and our bodies are such amazing gifts. And we all have so much to share with others. It’s a great experience for others to see that you can show up and take care of yourself.” But, he says, many of us are so distracted and resistant to change that we haven’t yet figured out how to get the most out of life. And many of us are stuck in chronic pain. “Pain, whether physical or emotional, is a wake-up call. That’s the good news! It’s a signal to take care of yourself. The cure for pain is the pain. When we go into our pain, that’s where we find the liberation. The whole idea is to wake up, go into it, and the healing results from doing that.” As the old patterns and distorted emotions leave the body, we get our energy, joy and humor back. Mitchell says he loves watching the process of his clients gradually feeling better and feeling freer in their bodies. “It’s so rewarding. Their pains go away, their excitement level expands, and they shift on so many levels,” he affirms, adding that the magic is in finding the courage and humility to overcome what holds us back. “All we really have to do is be open and willing to change. We all have so much potential for growth and healing. It’s amazing what can happen in a short amount of time. When people are ready, positive things will happen. Being stuck doesn’t have to be part of your life.” Body Solutions 101 is located at 535 N. Hwy. 101, Ste D, in Solana Beach. Call 760-715-2122 for a free consultation or a $50 first time session. Elina Fedotova on The Power of Probiotics for the Skin submitted by Charlene Handel
E
lina Fedotova, CEO of Elina Organics, has been sharing her unique passion for natural skin care since immigrating to the U.S. in 1991. She deeply believes that holistic beauty treatments and natural skin care products can deliver dramatic and long-lasting results, without the health risks associated with surgical face-lifts and other invasive procedures. In her laboratory, she personally creates her skin care products by hand, including her probiotic-rich line of products aimed at nourishing and healing the skin. While the subject of introducing probiotics to one’s skincare routine may just now be hitting mainstream media, Fedotova maintains that it’s been a holistic skincare tradition for centuries. “People have applied face masks from yogurt, kefir and kombucha tea to help heal and beautify their skin,” she says. “In the past, people had no idea that the reason fermented foods and beverages work is because they contain friendly microorganisms. Today,
science confirms that these beneficial microbes offer a host of benefits to the skin and entire body.” You mention that the use of probiotics is gaining momentum in the skincare industry. It’s definitely gaining momentum. And fortunately, it’s a trend that’s here to stay— one that has come full circle in the professional, 21st-century skin care industry. Even popular over-the-counter brands are joining the microbe marketplace by putting probiotics in their products. How do probiotics help the skin? Probiotics come in various forms and varieties and, when implemented into a skin care regimen or treatment, can provide many healing effects on the skin. While most people are familiar with the concept of a community of microorganisms in their digestive system called a microbiome, they’re not as familiar with the skin microbiome. However, the skin, the body’s larg-

est organ, plays host to various strains of bacteria, fungi and viruses, as well. A harmonious balance of these microbe colonies is one of the keys to healthy skin. If it’s out of balance, the skin’s immune system and protective barrier can be compromised. What is the biggest challenge for skin care formulators who use probiotics in their products? To have a shelf life, skincare products need preservatives—which kill bacteria, even good bacteria. So, the biggest challenge is finding a way to preserve them. If a skincare formula has probiotics and preservatives in it, the bacteria is most likely dead, which is not helpful. To be able to preserve the beneficial bacteria is an art. One way to ensure that bacteria is still alive is to introduce prebiotics as food for the probiotics. Another way is to encapsulate the bacteria, so it stays dormant in the capsule. This is the method I use in my skincare line. Once you blend the product with water, it activates the bacteria. How do you know if you’re getting "the real deal" when you go for a facial or skin peel? If a skincare specialist uses freshly fermented beverages, like kombucha, as an alternative to chemical peels, you know they are using live probiotics. Kombucha contains multiple species of yeast and bac-

teria, along with organic acids and active enzymes. It gently exfoliates and treats the skin with a mild pH of three and contains an effective cocktail of acetic, butyric, lactic and malic acids. It works very well for all complexions, especially for rosacea-prone and sensitive skin. A fresh probiotic mask can also be made by mixing yogurt, kefir and honey in equal proportions. Surprisingly, a study looking for probiotics in 13 samples of different types of commercially available honey uncovered 32 naturally-occurring strains of lactobacillus and six of them were lactobacillus acidophilus. Lactobacillus produces lactic acid on the skin, which helps to hydrate and brighten it. These microorganisms are also very effective for calming inflammatory skin conditions like acne and rosacea—both symptoms of an imbalanced skin microbiome. Are most skin problems associated with skin microbiome problems? If you have any major skin problems, it’s usually connected to a disturbed micro-
biome—which just means there is an imbalance of good to bad bacteria. The more good bacteria you introduce, the more you crowd out the bad bacteria and increase your skin’s health. Probiotics are a very efficient way to nurture, heal and protect the skin. They promote a desirable complexion when applied topically and when taken internally, as well. Topical probiotics combined with a whole, fresh diet with limited sugar intake and an abundance of fermented foods and beverages can leave one’s skin healthy and glowing.

UC San Diego Receives $4.7 Million Gift for Medical Cannabis Research
T
hanks to a major gift from the Ray and Tye Noorda Foundation, researchers at the University of California San Diego will embark on a multidisciplinary study to investigate the potential of cannabidiol as a treatment for severe autism. The award was given in partnership with and based on recommendations the Noorda Foundation received from the Wholistic Research and Education Foundation, according to a press release. The $4.7 million gift to the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR) at UC San Diego School of Medicine is the largest private gift to date for medicinal cannabis research in the United States. The funding will support translational research to investigate whether medicinal cannabinoid therapies can alleviate symptoms in children with severe autism—and if so, how. The groundbreaking study spans clinical, basic science, advanced mathematics and genetic techniques across the same cohort of patients, offering a comprehensive and systematic exploration of CBD efficacy on autism. “UC San Diego is pleased to partner with the Noorda and Wholistic foundations to advance understanding of when and how medicinal cannabis works, and to use this information to transform the lives of the many people for whom medicinal cannabis may make a meaningful difference in their quality of life,” said David A. Brenner, MD, vice chancellor of UC San Diego Health Sciences. “We believe that by working together using evidence-based data, we can make the greatest impact on the field, our community and policy decision-makers.” Learn more at Campaign.ucsd.edu.

PLANT MEDICINE plant brief
One Minute Cannabist
R
obbin and Terry Lynn, founders of One Minute Cannabist, in Oceanside, realize that many people are exploring the use of cannabis, but are often unsure where to start or how to get the best results. That’s why their center offers workshops on various cannabis topics throughout the month. “Our workshops offer an opportunity to explore healthy choices and best practices when consuming cannabis products,” says Robbin. The One Minute Cannabist is a new concept in cannabis education, offering adults who wish to use this giving plant, guidance for achieving safe and effective results. “We're bridging the gap between the consumer and the cannabis dispensary, helping people to navigate all the ways to use cannabis products, how to select, how to properly use and store,” adds Terry. Workshop topics include Cannabis for Pets, which covers the use of cannabis for our furry friends; Senior Safety and Cannabis, a nurse-led workshop which focuses on concerns and questions specific to those over 60; and All About CBD, which explores why cannabidiol (CBD) is so effective, understanding important aspects of how it is grown and derived, and best practices for maximizing results. “Have a product you bought that’s not working? Did you have a bad experience? Are you new to the world of cannabis use? Visit us during our “Cannabis Navigator” hours and we’ll help you navigate product selection and provide instruction on proper use to maximize your results,” says Robbin, who affirms their chief goal is to be a trusted community resource helping others make wise decisions about their existing cannabis use or how to implement this healing plant into their lives.
