ctober is Cancer Awareness Month. I’m declaring it Alternative Health Awareness Day every day. The longer I publish Natural Awakenings, the more I learn how much more there is to learn. The first Natural Awakenings magazine I ever picked up was at the Whole Foods in Boca Raton. That is when I first learned about thermography. Since then I have opted to never do another mammogram. Like most alternative health modalities, insurance doesn’t cover thermal breast imaging so we remain paying out of pocket for these services for now. Thankfully acupuncture, chiropractic, naturopathic medicine and several other preventive health measures are slowly being endorsed by insurance. Hopefully the insurance companies are beginning to see that the more proactive we are with ourselves, the better our overall health.

I believe this to be true in the financial arena as well. Like the plant medicine section I started within these pages, I am adding an alternative currency section, too. I am obviously a firm believer in barter, as you can tell by the local ITEX advertisers in my publication. ITEX is not like Bitcoin and they should not be confused as such. Many people hear the word barter and they run because they don’t understand it. I know I did. ITEX finally caught up with me and I am fortunate that it did. It not only opened up another stream of financial revenue, but it also opened up an entire network of business owners I would never have known about. Mr. Peabody’s in Encinitas, Vinz Wine Bar in Escondido, Rossi’s pizza in San Marcos, French Gourmet and many other fabulous eating establishments and services were unknown to me until ITEX came into my world. I’ve been watching Bitcoin for years and never quite understood it. I finally took the time to wrap my arms around it. It’s another alternative currency that shows a lot of promise. I find it interesting how the people successfully using ITEX network gravitate much easier towards Bitcoin, even though they are very different. What they both have in common is they offer alternative ways to pay for things. I believe we will see many more companies accepting Bitcoin. Like yoga, cannabis, energy medicine and the like, alternative ways of living are here for us to use. I’ll do my best to help educate you, our reader, on all of these ways that can help us step into a brighter, healthier future for all.

Safe Drinking Water on the Go

N

ancy Neigus, health coach and entrepreneur, knows that everyone’s attention is on the multiple disasters that have distressed North America during the last few months. “A key issue is availability of water,” she says. “Humans can live without food for 30 days, but only three to seven days without fresh water. Even before Hurricane Irma hit Florida, many locations had already run out of bottled water.” Even without a looming disaster, the availability of clean, safe and fresh-tasting water has become a challenge in the U.S. and around the world. Microcystic blooms (Toledo, OH), lead (Detroit, MI), PFOAs (PA) and other contaminants have passed through municipal water treatment systems that are supposed to protect its citizens. “Safe water is threatened and hard to find. People rely too much on bottled water, when the plastic bottles can be a health issue from leaching as well as create environmental pollution,” says Neigus, an independent representative for ARIIX, manufacturer of Puritii water and air filtration products. The Puritii Water Filtration System is a personal portable water bottle with a powerful filtration process that filters out heavy metals, biological, chemical and emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and pesticides, yet it leaves in the beneficial minerals. “Each filter provides the equivalent of 600, 16-ounce water bottles and is simple to install and replace,” shares Neigus. “The bottle itself is free of all bisphenols and is reusable.” Puritii is ideal for traveling, outdoor activities and around town. “Store an extra filter in an emergency preparedness kit. It can be used with water from a stream or lake, water fountain or any sink. It’s easy to drink and has a fresh taste. Plus, it saves the environment from 600 plastic water bottles,” adds Neigus. For more information, visit Puritii.com or contact Nancy Neigus at Nancy.Neigus@ gmail.com or 858-354-4840. Purchase from 858water.com; filter $86, reusable Tritan bottle $31 retail with available discounts of 15 to 30 percent.

New Look for Natural Awakenings Magazinet

N

atural Awakenings magazine is sporting a new look. After being unveiled in Florida’s Collier/ Lee edition that serves Naples and Fort Myers—the first of a family of magazines that has grown to encompass 85 U.S. cities, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic—in July, the new logo and cover design will appear in all editions starting in October. Other design elements are expected to be refreshed in the near future to align with the evolution of the national content already underway. The plans were announced at the Natural Awakenings’ Publishers Conference in Orlando in May. “We’ve kept up with new, cuttingedge trends and developments in all areas of sustainable, healthy living through the years, so it’s only natural for our look to also evolve,” says Sharon Bruckman, CEO and founder of Natural Awakenings Publishing Corporation. “The new cover format enables us to highlight more of the content offered inside the issue. The changes also reflect the success of our mission in supporting the presence and growth of the natural living movement to the point where it’s beneficially influencing mainstream media content.” Launched by Bruckman with a single magazine in 1994, Natural Awakenings is now one of the largest, free, local, healthy lifestyle publications worldwide, serving approximately 3.5 million readers. SOUL SHINE by Marianne Williamson

ur deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. From A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles by Marianne Williamson.

eather Faun Basl and Johanna Davis are celebrating this fall with a Soul Shift Retreat from November 7 through 9 in Sedona, Arizona, focusing on transformation and restoration. They help participants remove what blocks and holds them back from their highest potential. Wildlife Wipeout Wind Turbines Kill Winged Creatures

Wind turbines make cleaner energy, but are dangerous to birds and bats. According to a study in the Wildlife Society Bulletin, approximately 573,000 birds and 888,000 bats are killed annually by wind turbines, which are providing increased wind power capacity nationwide. At one solar power plant in California, an estimated 3,500 birds died in just the plant’s first year of operation. What would help most is offshore turbines and knowledge about migration routes. The safest place for wind turbines is in the ocean, because songbirds and bats don’t migrate over such waters. On land, many songbirds fly at night and can’t see the wind turbines until it’s too late. Once they’ve discovered the unsafe area, they avoid it. Because migration routes are based on availability of food, water and resting areas, birds are forced to fly around the turbines, adding miles to their trip and the burning of more calories. Estimates of just how many bats are dying each year range from the tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands. Radar installations help to keep bats away from the deadly blades. Other remedies include slowing the blades at night to reduce collisions, which has proved to reduce overall wildlife deaths by 73 percent. In 2016 the American Wind Energy Association announced voluntary guidelines to halt turbines during low wind speeds, when bats are most active, to reduce bat fatalities by 30 percent. With two more industry changes, bat fatalities could drop 90 percent: feathering, or turning the blades parallel to the wind so the turbines don’t rotate; and higher cut-in speeds so they don’t rotate in light winds. Take action at NationOfChange.org/petitions/protect-batslethal-wind-turbines.

Safe Breast Health Monitoring Thermal Imaging Shows What Mammograms Can’t See

B

reast cancer has touched the lives of nearly every woman in America. If you haven’t had a direct experience, then chances are your mother, aunt or friend has had to deal with this modern plague on women. There is a controversy when it comes to knowing what is the best and safest way to monitor breast health. Aren’t mammograms good enough? “Not if you’re interested in true prevention,” says Certified Clinical Thermographer Lisa Kalison-Tota, owner of Discovery Screening. “By the time a mammogram sees a mass the size of a pea, it has been incubating for 8 to 10 years. And, that pea size mass cannot be seen in dense breast tissue—which 40 to 60 percent of women have. This is why mammograms are not recommended for young women. Yet younger and younger women are contracting the disease; the youngest girl found at age 12.” To find the earliest signs, Thermal Imaging (thermography) detects thermal temperature changes in tissue that have been shown to correlate with cancerous and, more importantly, pre-cancerous states. It utilizes an infrared camera to take images of the breasts without harmful radiation, no painful compression, and is as easy as sitting for a portrait. Kalison-Tota points out that, in the last 40 years, there have been more than 800 reported peer-reviewed studies on thermography, with more than 300,000 women evaluated. Some studies, which have followed women over 15-years, conclude “an abnormal thermogram is the single most important marker of high risk for the future development of breast cancer,” and that it is eight times more significant than family history. Discovery Screening has clinic locations in San Diego, North County, Orange County and Temecula. Call 760-436-8811 or visit DiscoveryScreening.com to learn more.

Banning Trans FatsLowers Heart Attacks

E

leven counties in New York instituted restrictions on trans fatty acids in restaurants in 2007. Researchers from Yale University School of Medicine used data from the New York State Department of Health statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System and U.S. Census population estimates to determine the impact of these restrictions on the health of the community; they compared the 11 counties that had the restrictions to 25 counties without them. The scientists concluded that hospital heart attack admissions were significantly lower for the 11 counties with the restrictions.

Spirulina Reduces Weight and Cholesterol

S

pirulina platensis, a single-celled blue-green algae used in supplements, is often taken for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. A new study from Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, in Iran, tested the efficacy of spirulina supplementation on the body mass index (BMI), weight and cholesterol levels of 64 obese adults between the ages of 20 and 50. Subjects were divided into intervention and placebo groups. The intervention group took twice-daily supplements of Spirulina platensis for 12 weeks. BMI, fasting blood samples and lipid profiles were assessed at the beginning and end of the study, and food intake and appetite were reported daily. The scientists found more than double the reductions in both body weight and BMI in the spirulina group, compared to the control group. In addition, reductions in both total cholesterol and appetite were found in the intervention group.

Cash is Great, But Barter is Smarter by Linda Sechrist

A

rthur Kaliel’s first experience with “barter is smarter” may have been 25 years ago but he still remembers it. “I worked for a small printing company in 1986 and I was curious to know how my boss could afford to treat my wife and I to such great dinners and top-notch vacations,” says Kaliel, a marketing agent for ITEX Corporation’s San Diego franchise office. “When I asked, he told me that his generous employee perks were possible because he accepted barter dollars from restaurants and resorts for his printing services,” advises Kaliel. Kaliel liked the idea of cashless business transactions so much that in 1992 he went to work for Business Exchange International (BXI), which was bought out in 2004 by ITEX, the leading marketplace for cashless

14

San Diego Edition

business transactions across North America. ITEX provides a stable and secure infrastructure for businesses to barter and has over 90 franchisees and licensees serving over 24,000 member businesses nationwide. According to Kaliel, bartering is especially well suited to service-based businesses, such as printing, accounting, consulting or graphic design. In a service-based business, income often depends on the ability to charge an hourly wage. Time that isn’t accounted for doesn’t produce income, so a services business can benefit from using barter to turn excess hours into hard goods. Just about anything can be purchased on barter. With ITEX/s national membership of over 24,000 businesses there are literally thousands of categories for goods and services from which NA-SD.com

to choose from. “There are 1700 ITEX members in the San Diego area and I keep adding more,” notes Kaliel. “Members tell me about other businesses they want to add to our directory and I go out and recruit them,” advises Kaliel. Elaine Russo, Natural Awakenings publisher now Multi-Marketing Agent for ITEX San Diego, nationally and internationally, wasn’t interested in learning about ITEX when she first heard about it. “I was in my second year as a publisher, and I was just too busy.” But her then marketing director, Gloria Taylor Brown, had other plans for her. “She set up a meeting with Arthur Kaliel and practically had to drag me to it,” she recalls. By the end of the meeting, Russo signed on for the program. “There was little to no commitment to try it out,” she says. And before she knew it, business began flowing her way without her even having to try. “It’s all because I entered the world of ITEX, and once you’re in it, you can’t see how you survived that long without it.” ITEX has transformed the way Russo does business. “Almost anything you want to buy on barter is available to you,” assures Russo. And, says Russo, if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you create it. “Plus, the timing couldn’t be better. With the economic problems our country has been facing, barter systems are becoming more popular.” Using barter dollars can not only help entrepreneurs reduce expenses, but it creates new relationships with little effort and no cost, and enables members to take advantage of barter exchanges all over the world. “Cash is always going to be king, but barter is queen. And there’s never been a more perfect marriage!” adds Russo. “You don’t lose your cash clients, you gain new clients you would not have had and cash client referrals. It’s a natural phenomenon.” To find out more, call Elaine Russo at 760-436-2343, or email at Publisher@na-sd.com. Visit na-sd.com.

Understanding the Risks and Benefits of Bitcoin

S

Making Bitcoin Easy to Understand

outhern California-native Jim Farren, president of Protech Consulting Solutions, a division of Protech Enterprises, Inc., realizes that people are confused when it comes to crypto-currency. That is why he is dedicated to educating others on how to understand Bitcoin without needing to read the endless blogs, articles and online posts. “It’s important to understand the risks and benefits of crypto-currency, and Bitcoin in particular,” he says. Farren shares that the first Bitcoin transaction took place in 2009. “A lot has happened in the interim but the most significant developments and visibility have occurred in 2017. Since crypto-currencies, by definition, are global, the rapid rise in the adoption of Bitcoin is impacting every country on the planet,” he explains. “Bitcoin has finally caught the world’s attention and those who take the time to understand what’s happening, why it’s happening and the potential consequences will be the ones to benefit from this evolution in currency exchange. The benefits could be enormous in scope and impact, both on the protection and growth of personal wealth.” Farren says that his company has a unique way of investing in Bitcoin while at the same time hedging that investment against Bitcoin volatility. “It won’t make you a millionaire overnight…but it could over time. Most importantly, we can help you to ‘get in the game’ and learn about this fascinating development in global exchange,” he says. “Our focus is on getting involved with crypto-currency for ‘fun and profit’… with an equal emphasis on both.” For more information, contact Jim Farren at 760-670-3244 or Info@BitcoinWiseUSA.com.

itcoin, the virtual banking currency of the internet, has existed since 2009 and yet there are still many people who don’t know what a Bitcoin is. So, what exactly are Bitcoins and where do they come from? Who uses Bitcoins? Is a Bitcoin a form of legal tender? If so, are Bitcoins the currency of the future? Trying to explain Bitcoin currency is a little like explaining quantum mechanics. The fact is, as Richard Feynman, the noted physicist, said, “I think I can safely say no one understands quantum mechanics.” Yet it is very real and used every day. Bitcoin is a little like that. What is a Bitcoin? Paul Gil in his informative Lifewire.com article about Bitcoin and how it works, writes, “Bitcoins are electronic currency, otherwise known as ‘cryptocurrency’. Bitcoins are a form of digital public money that is created by complex mathematical computations and policed by millions of computer users called ‘miners’. Bitcoins are, essentially electricity, converted into long strings of code that have money value.” In fact, the cost of the electricity required to ‘mine’ a bitcoin was used to calculate the value of the first Bitcoin. Why Bitcoins are so controversial Over time several things have evolved to make Bitcoin currency a media

16

sensation. What is happening now can be viewed as Bitcoin having reached “critical mass” on a global scale. “From 2011 to 2013, criminal traders made bitcoins famous by buying them in batches of millions of dollars so they could move money outside of the eyes of law enforcement. Subsequently, the value of bitcoins skyrocketed,” explains Gil in the aforementioned article. Yet the claim that Bitcoin or crypto-currency poses a threat to global welfare due to use by criminals and terrorists is grossly misleading. The Wall Street Journal reports that 97 percent of such activity involves conventional fiat currency—mainly the U.S. dollar. So you might as well lobby to eliminate the dollar. Ultimately, though, according to Gil’s article, “bitcoins are highly controversial because they take the power of making money away from central federal banks, and give it to the public.” Bitcoin accounts cannot be frozen or examined by tax men, and middleman banks are completely unnecessary for bitcoins to move, be traded or held; no wonder Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JP Morgan Chase Bank, doesn’t like it. arc Malin, owner of Sound Touch, knows that navigating the world of medicinal CBD, THC, cannabis and hemp can be confusing. As a Cannabis Consultant, he relies on the years he spent as an herb and supplement buyer for the natural foods industry. “In that position, I had the honor of being trained by some of the best herbalists in the country,” he says. “There are several repetitive issues that get raised in any discussion in the effectiveness of herbal medicine and lots of conflicting reports and studies. That is because doing studies on herbal products have a lot of variables not present in laboratory created medicines.” Malin shares that some of the variables include: • Taking into consideration what part of the plant was used • How and when was the plant harvested • How to confirm that the plant listed is actually in the product • Attaining repeatable dosing from plants

“The average consumer doesn’t want to have to wade through all of this to pick their products,” explains Malin. “This is why I recommend buying from companies that have taken steps to address these issues and earn your trust.” According to Malin, there is a lot of misinformation being given to consumers about herbal medicine. “As a result, self-regulation in the industry has become the norm,” he says. “Look for distributers that carry companies that have confirmed third party independent testing for purity and dosage and ingredient accuracy. Some companies use harsh solvents to extract the CBD and/or THC. Look for the cleaner alternative of CO2 extraction and buy organic whenever possible.” Malin shares that herbalists

PLANT MEDICINE know the plants have an innate intelligence and that there is a synergy in the full plant extracts that go beyond the THC and/or CBD content. “The basic argument is that we shouldn’t try to improve upon nature. The flip side of the argument is the scientific approach that says if you are making a medicinal product, that you have to have markers in that product to guarantee therapeutic dosages,” he explains. “Both arguments have validity; there are also herbal companies that do full spectrum standardization to bring all the plant constituents to therapeutic dosages. Also, unlike laboratory medicines that can negatively interact with each other, plants tend to complement each other and work synergistically together when in their natural state.” Malin suggests using a trusted source, like Natural Awakenings magazine, as part of one’s research on finding cannabis products from reputable companies. “Natural Awakenings naturally attracts those in the alternative health industry, including cannabis dispensaries and other cannabis related businesses, that make it their mission to adhere to the highest of standards. These are the companies that are most likely to be using the third party testing, the organic cannabis, and the healthy extraction methods.” For more information, visit MarcSoundTouch.com. PLANT MEDICINE

Experience the Entourage Effect with NeuCana Cannaceuticals

Weedease Organics Now Esculent Oils

euCana Oral Spray is a new CBD medical cannabis delivery method that provides patients a fresh breath of relief. NeuCana Cannaceuticals offers Whole Flower Botantical Formulations in a variety of products. This highly efficient medical cannabis solution is unlike anything on the market today. The Whole Flower Formula is water soluble and extracts all of the cannabinoids, terpenes and other constituents that are contained in each flower. As stated on Project CBD: “Cannabis contains several hundred compounds, including various flavonoids, aromatic terpenes, and many minor cannabinoids, in addition to THC and CBD. Each of these compounds has specific healing attributes, and when combined they create what scientists refer to as a holistic “Entourage Effect”. This means that the therapeutic impact of the whole plant is greater than the sum of its single-molecule parts. Tim Ricker, social entrepreneur and the founder of NeuCana Cannaceuticals, is driven to resolve social problems, from drinking and driving to pain management. After lifting a vehicle to save a pregnant woman from DUI hit and run, he was recognized by local leaders as a brave citizen for his courage and starting a transportation business, Round-Trip 101. Ricker is now paving a new road for medicine with his “Start Low Go Slow” approach. Whole Flower CBD water soluble botanical oral spray formula provides patients managing pain a safe, natural solution. “Many patients dealing with pain due to inflammation, cancer, opiate addiction and epilepsy use CBD. This natural nootropic is non-psychotic, nonpsychoactive and comes at the time our nation is suffering from another public health epidemic—patients overdosing on prescription drugs,” shares Ricker. “Next visit, ask your doctor for more recommendations like Whole Flower CBD before taking addictive prescription drugs.”

dible oils manufacturer Weedease Organics is now Esculent Oils. The change is taking place in conjunction with the company complying with the upcoming legalization of recreational marijuana in California. The word “esculent” means “fit to be eaten” and the company plans on expanding statewide in the next year. For the past three years, Weedease Organics has supplied dispensaries with edible oils, such as their OCCO (organic canola cannabis oil) and Cannacocobis (organic coconut oil). OCCO was a first place winner in the annual Edibles Magazine contest for Best Veggie Oil in 2016. With the new name and new promotions, they intend to expand their offerings in the new year to include new flavors such as garlic, lemon, rosemary and basil. These products allow patients, and recreational users, to “dose” their own edibles so that they know exactly how much THC is present in their edible products. The new flavors will come with new packaging that complies with California laws and will be childproof.
