THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO FAMILY SAFARIS

About Family Safaris The faces of your family glow warmly from the light of the campfire as you retell the stories of the day, reminiscing on the thrills of your African safari; the time you saw the herd of zebra from a hot air balloon, that leopard resting in a tree, that lion pride that followed you back to camp, those elephants that drank confidently from the lodge pool. Children grow up fast, too fast. There will never be a better or more rewarding time to enrich their lives with travel than now. Create memories of a lifetime with the orangutans of Borneo, or the lemurs of Madagascar. Swim with sea lions in the Galapagos Islands, or travel via zip-line in Costa Rica.

Why travel with the family? Travelling with the family is a dream for many and nothing compares to your child’s face the first time they see an elephant up close, or after an exhilarating walk high in a jungle canopy. Spend your evenings around camp fires or sleeping to the calming sounds of the jungle, your days walking with the wildlife, on game drives or boat safaris.

Not just the wildlife Children of all ages seem to love animals, and they can be a big part of your family safari, however we believe you can gain a lot more from your experience. Culturally, each destination is different and young people can learn a lot by spending time with the Masai in Kenya, or walking with the bushmen in Botswana. Watch the sunset as your guide divulges stories of growing up on the plains, or learn how to treat snake bites and create traditional weapons. You holiday can also be combined with beach time, whether you are considering Africa, the Indian Ocean, Asia or Latin America.

Choosing your operator Natural World Safaris are specialists in designing family adventures specific to your family. Whether you have a destination in mind, or would like us to assist from that very first step - you can be happy and confident that we put our all into discovering what it best for you. We can arrange for you to do everything together or, as in most cases, ensure that you get some well-deserved alone time whilst the younger generations have their very own adventures. Perhaps you want to relax by the pool with a cocktail overlooking the jungle whilst they head out zip-lining, or maybe you want a quiet dinner under the stars whilst they enjoy a cooking lesson. We are a small team of experts and each of our Destination Specialists has lived or worked in the areas they sell. Most of our team have young families whom they love to explore the world with. We know the best areas for families of all ages and design our family safaris around the needs of your family, collectively and on an individual basis. The options for you and your family are endless. In this guide we have detailed some of our favourite family destinations and why they are so incredible; from Africa and Asia to Latin America.

We’ve outlined below some of the things you need to consider when taking your children away depending on their age, along with suggesting a few of our favourite destinations for each age band. Of course, each family is unique and has their own wants and needs, so have a read and get in touch to find out more on travel for your family, the below really is just a guide.

These species are not only magical to see, but also endangered; with the possibility of extinction a real threat before your children grow up. By seeing them in the wild and in rehabilitation sanctuaries we are contributing to their ongoing survival through tourism. Travelling with young and impressionable minds, we can make them aware of the challenges faced by wildlife today and show them how we, as individuals, can help. Tracking or watching these species can be combined with other wonderful activities and wildlife. Hopefully this will inspire our next generation of Natural World Heroes. From top left, clockwise:

Leatherbacks and Loggerheads

Call of the Indri

What? Endangered turtle species. Why? Enjoy night walks to record the nests of these enadngered turtles. You can also snorkel coral reef and canoe on the lake. Where? South Africa. Stay at Thonga Beach Lodge in Maputaland.

What? They Indri are a species of lemur. Why? Their haunting siren calls are a wonderful way to wake. Explore the rainforests on nature walks as their song travel through the trees as if carried along on the morning mists. Where? Madagascar. Stay at the wonderful Vakona Forest Lodge.

Man of the Forest What? Bornean orangutans Why? Enjoy close encounters with these surprisingly human-like species in the wild, and in a sanctuary. Kids and adults love witnessing these curious critters in real life. Where? Borneo. Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary is great for close encounters. You can see them in the wild in the Danum Valley and the Kinabatangan River.

Majestic tigers What? Bengal tigers Why? Tigers are the biggest of the cats. Track them in India and spot other wildlife too, from sloth bears to monkeys. Where? India’s tiger parks.

Eerie Aye Ayes What? The Aye aye is a species of lemur that was long feared by the local people. Why? With an intriguing appearance, spotting one is a real treat, but was considered a bad omen by many Malagasy people, one of the causes for the decline in population. Where? Madagascar. You can track the aye aye with the Kianjavato Lemur Project - an experience exclusive to guests of Natural World Safaris. It is now possible to see the aye aye during your stay at the Palmarium Hotel. Six individuals live just a fifteen minute boat ride away on a tiny island.

0-4: The baby and toddler years

4-12: The primary school years

12+: The senior School years

When your children are this young, travel might be the last thing on your mind. There is so much to consider. Even things like just reaching your destination becomes stressful; nobody wants to be the parent with the non-stop crying baby. Then there is the question as to whether they will even remember the trip and whether it is even worth the trouble of going away...

These years are wonderful for travelling. Your children’s ability to notice and find joy over some of the small things is hard to beat. Little tasks such as weighing your bags before even getting on the plane become an exciting part of the adventure. Culture and knowledge is absorbed like a sponge and you’ll often find they know more than you do by the end of the holiday.

From 12 upwards, travelling is educational, inspiring and all round wonderful. At this age, they can experience the world just like an adult and will retain many wonderful memories. Few destinations or activities are off limits, meaning the world is your oyster. Track tigers in India, zip line through Costa Rica, get hands on in Madagascar, walk with the wildlife in Zambia. The options are pretty much endless.

Despite all this there are lots of good reasons to travel with very young children. Babies are easy to transport and in a lot of destinations your child’s needs will be catered for just as easily at they are at home. Babies often travel free, offering a great opportunity for new parents to have a break and time together to relax after the initial months of sleepless nights!

Destinations such as Kenya, Sri Lanka and the Galapagos often have ‘kids clubs’ that are tailored to this age range, although some start from 8+ so speak to us before you book anything. Far from being cheesy camp style clubs, these give your child an authentic look at the culture and wildlife of destinations and include activities from walking safaris and making a bow and arrow in Africa, to guided swimming with sea lions or cooking in the Galapagos.

When you travel with a toddler you’ll find out how much everyone loves small children - expect locals to coo and fuss over them, making them feel like VIPs! Recommended destinations Indian Subcontinent and Far East: Sri Lanka Latin America: Costa Rica Africa and Indian Ocean: South Africa

Recommended destinations: Indian Subcontinent and Far East: Borneo, Sri Lanka, India Africa and Indian Ocean: South Africa, Kenya, Namibia Latin America: Costa Rica, Chile, Galapagos Islands

The way you want to travel might be different to the younger years, covering more ground on your travels. While having your travel restricted to the school holidays can mean higher prices and busier areas we know a lot about avoiding this and where to go, with some incredible less-known areas that avoid any crowds. Recommended destinations: Indian Subcontinent and Far East: Borneo, India, Sri Lanka Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile, Galapagos Islands Africa and Indian Ocean: Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Zambia

Once you start travelling with children aged 15 and over you can treat them as young adults and the whole world opens with options such as gorilla tracking and Arctic polar bear expeditions becoming available.

Africa & Indian Ocean Africa is the home of the traditional safari. Here, children and young adults, as well as adults themselves, can learn about the incredible wildlife of the African plains. But it’s not just game drives that will inspire families. Watch the thundering migration, balloon safari over the Okavango Delta, climb the world’s highest sand dunes, see the dancing lemurs and googly-eyed chameleons of Madagascar and more. The list really does go on, and there is something for everyone here, whether you want to see some of the biggest land mammals, to the smallest critters.

In Kenya, spend time with the Masai and discover what it was like for them growing up here, how they survive and their traditions. Watch the drama of the African plains unfold as you listen to crurious tales of child antics in this wild environment. This is a real eye opener for people of any age. And something we can mix into most African safaris.

Private safari houses For a more intimate family experience, away from any crowds, we can organise for you your very own safari house. This means younger guests can join and enjoy game drives and walks, your own chef will design meals around your times and tastes, and your daily plan can be organised around your wants and needs.

Kenya Family Holidays Why Kenya Rolling savannah, glowing sunsets and wildlife rich plains are what most of us picture when we think of Kenya; and you won’t be disappointed. Fitting the ‘Classic Africa’ image, Kenya is bound to give both you and your young ones the experience of your lifetime and watching the mixture of excitement and pure adrenaline on their first lion encounter is just priceless – no matter how many times they’ve watched The Lion King Kenya is ideal for that first family safari!

KENYA

FACT FILE Recommended min. age: 8 years.

Many of Kenya’s parks are relatively small, especially when compared to somewhere like Tanzania. Smaller parks means shorter drive times – and less ‘are we there yet?’ from the kids in the back – although it is possible to get from lodge to lodge, and park to park, via light aircraft, eliminating hefty drives altogether. So your only drives will be out on safari as you watch the stories of the Africa savannah unfold before your eyes…

3

SRI LANKA Enjoy an island adventure with everything. Sri Lanka is home to temples, jungles, beaches and some amazing wildlife.

Elephant encounters In August, Minneriya National Park in Sri Lanka is home to the largest Asian elephant gathering on the face of the earth. In India, those over 15 can take part in the Corbett Elephant Safari programme, and in Borneo explore the Kinabatangan River in search of pygmy elephants!

Cuisine for children

Witness sea turtles hatching or making their first ever journey to the sea in Sri Lanka. This unique experience is a fantastic way of combining your beach time with something educational and it really is a thrill to see these tiny creatures.

2

BORNEO One of our favourite family destinations. See orangutans, relax on the beach, snorkel with colourful fish and more.

The Tea Trails in Sri Lanka are fascinating. Plantations grow on every spare inch of land, regardless of the angle. Tea pickers work their way through the rows of leafs, selecting the best for their product. The landscapes are stunning and the accommodation outstanding, perfect for some real family time. Here, you can learn the art of creating the perfect cuppa, and hopefully the inspiration will stay with them when they get home!

WEIRD WILDLIFE Name: Proboscis monkey Location: Borneo What’s so weird? Male proboscis monkeys use their long fleshy noses to attract mates. Loud honks and hooting impresses the females and intimidate other males. The louder the better!

I was, I confess, sceptical about the idea of an extended family trip to India. I have been here before. I was wrong. We have had a superb holiday and were looked after all the way. Since I well know just how easy it is to make things work smoothly here I am doubly impressed at what you put together and your choice of team.

India safari review by Jonathan P.

Asia is renowned for its incredible cuisine, and India, Sri Lanka and Borneo offer unique and fascinating dishes. Most tastes can be catered for, but you need to let us know in advance about allergies or picky eaters. We think that travelling in Asia is an excellent way for your child to broaden their food horizons. In India, you can actually go and pick fresh tantalising spices before learning how to cook them.

Jungle Book Experience The famous Jungle Book was set in India’s wild jungles. Tigers camouflage in the tall grass, sloth bears hide in the bushes, snakes bask in the hot sun and cheeky langur monkeys play on broken branches. Enjoy game drives through the jungles, wild with life and allow your guides to share their knowledge on the animals and why each one is so important to India’s ecosystem.

Vibrant culture India’s culture is colourful and unique, from clothing and cuisine, to temples and palaces. Exploring aromatic markets and bustling cities is a fun and educational way for children to learn about different cultures and ways of living.

Fancy a treat? India and Sri Lanka are excellent for massage. Why not send the kids off for the morning whilst your relax at the hands of a professional!

Age Recommendations 0-4 years: Although too young to fully appreciate the wonders of Asia, there are some excellent experiences for children at this age. Sri Lanka is ideal due to a shorter flight time from the UK and wonderful array of activities. 4-13+ years: Above four years is a wonderful time for your family to really enjoy these fascinating areas. All are wonderful for combining wildlife, culture and beach; however Borneo is perfect for an adventurous getaway, India and Sri Lanka for their markets, temples and cuisine.

Borneo Family Holidays Why Borneo Orangutans swing majestically from branch to branch; gibbons race through the jungle canopy and male proboscis monkey strut their stuff for their harems in tow. Borneo has so much to offer for a family holiday, and it is well worth the bug spray. Feeding platforms at sanctuaries are often the best way to see the animals as they allow prolonged viewing in open spaces. Combined with rainforest lodges and an island beach retreat, you have a fabulous family safari. Activities range from canopy walkways, wildlife boat safaris and walking, to jeep safaris, spotlight drives and snorkelling. Older kids might enjoy the cultural side of Borneo and a visit to a traditional longhouse is always an enriching experience. After all, travel is all about discovery.

Hanging bridges: Walkways suspended in the forest canopy give you a bird’s eye view of the rainforest. Great way to see the exotic hornbill. Snorkelling & diving: Discover some of the most stunning coral reefs and open up to an underwater world of tropical treasures. Danum Valley: Whether it is nature trekking or river tubing through the rainforest, kids both big and small love this place. Sun bears: Visit the endangered Bornean sun bear, the smallest bear in the world, and contribute towards their conservation. Miki’s Jungle Camp: Learn how to live off the jungle - build a campfire, identify edible fruits, make bamboo cups and more.

Designing your Borneo Safari As a tropical destination there are marked wet and dry seasons. The best time to go is from April through to October, but it is also the most expensive time to travel. If you and your family don’t mind getting a little wet then there are some great deals to be found during the rainy season. You may even see an orangutan using some leaves as an umbrella – they’re the only primates known to do this! As a family wildlife destination, Borneo tends to tick all of the boxes, but with so much to do and see it can often be difficult to plan your own itinerary. Fortunately, our destination specialists have a wealth of knowledge to help point you in the right direction. Whether you are looking for wildlife and beaches, or culture and adventure there is a brilliant Borneo safari waiting for you. Just give us a call on +44 (0) 1273 691 642 and you’ll be packing your bags before you know it.

Costa Rica Family Holidays

Top family lodges

Why Costa Rica It just so happens that Costa Rica has wildlife and adventure in bucket loads, and it won’t break the bank to enjoy the best of it with a bit of luxury thrown in too. For a country so small it really packs in the wildlife claiming an incredible 6 percent of the world’s biodiversity, and wildlife encounters are at a maximum. Monkeys dart around in the trees, sloths casually hang from branches, turtles nest along the beaches and an abundance of colourful tropical birds fill the bright blue skies. Safaris range from walking through dense rainforest, to boating and kayaking; canopy viewing platforms and hanging bridges pretty much all over the place. Butterfly farms and reptile houses are also common place to fill in what little spare time you will have. Whether you want a wild adventure, time to relax on the beach, or even both together, Costa Rica will not disappoint.

It is at the forefront of ecotourism so if you like to travel green then you can’t get much better than Costa Rica.

Get away from TV’s and phones in these luxury rainforest bungalows. Get up close and personal with wildlife whilst you learn about sustainability; learn to surf, whale watch or swim in a wild waterfall.

Galapagos Islands Family Holidays Why the Galapagos Islands Kids love getting up close with animals and there really is no better place in the world than the Galapagos Islands. This wildlife paradise has evolved with very few predators and, as a result, the animals have no fear of humans. Watch as your kids imitate the mating dance of the blue footed booby; listen to them recount their experience of swimming with sea lions, and observe as they gaze in wonder at the iguanas. It’s not all about the wildlife either; discover Darwin’s Theory of Evolution in fun and interactive ways, and explore a landscape formed through thousands of years of volcanic activity. Throw in the seemingly everlasting sun and these islands have pretty much everything going for them.

Swimming with sea lions: An intimate experience unique to the Galapagos. Snorkelling: Open up your kids to a whole new world of sea turtles, marine iguanas and an abundance of tropical fish. Galapagos penguins: Swim with these critters at Chinese Hat Island. Lava tunnels: Volcanic formations are found throughout the islands but none are quite like the giant lava tunnels that you can walk through. Glass-bottom boats: Ideal for those that choose not to snorkel. Sea kayaking: Explore the coves and bays of the Galapagos. Some boats provide double kayaks, great for families.

Designing your Galapagos Safari It doesn’t get much better than the Galapagos when it comes to families, although 5 or 6 is generally the minimum age, any younger and they are unlikely to appreciate its splendour. A cruise is the usual way to explore and there are often family specific departures, although the standards departures are great for children too. Cruises are usually a week long but there are shorter options of 4 or 5 days. Combine these with island hopping land programs to get the most out of this engaging wildlife destination.
