GALAPAGOS SAFARIS

A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE

a world of natural wonders

A land of diversity, intrigue and fearless wildlife, the Galapagos Islands are a fabulous example of the world’s weird and wonderful. Here you don’t view wildlife from afar; you walk among bluefooted boobies and sword fighting albatrosses, swim with playful sea lions, marine iguanas and turtles, and explore landscapes that look like they should be preserved in a museum. The Galapagos Islands are a hands-on destination, with something for people of all ages. The Galapagos Islands are renowned amongst wildlife enthusiasts; a fascinating sprinkle of small islands off the west coast of Ecuador, home to the weird, the wonderful and the totally unique. According to statistics, a total of 215,691 tourists visited the Galapagos during 2014. Most visitors will typically experience similar multi-day tours, itineraries enforced by national park regulations and, dare we say it, an exercise in ticking off the various species the islands are famous for. At Natural World Safaris we like to do things a little differently, getting off the beaten track for extraordinary wildlife encounters in tune with the natural environment, visiting as true explorer and keeping our human footprint on this unique environment to a minimum. We work with the best vessels to ensure you have access to superior guiding services and mix up traditional cruises with land-based options to create a different focus to the many runof-the-mill ship-based itineraries on offer. Our Galapagos safaris offer the opportunity to explore ancient volcanic lava tunnels, wander through Jurassic style swamps inhabited by ancient tortoises up to 5 foot in length, and visit beaches unmarked by footsteps.

SANTA CRUZ ISLAND Santa Cruz could really be described as the engine room of the Galapagos; whilst that doesn’t shed it in the most romantic light, it has a huge amount to offer and is the first port of call for most visitors. The main airport is located here on a small island called Baltra from which there is a short road transfer and ferry crossing across to the main island. Here you can transfer to your boat, or your lodge. MAIN ATTRACTIONS Santa Cruz Island includes one of the best locations to see giant tortoises in the wild, as well as lava tubes, and even huge lava caves which you can explore on foot, taking you deep underground. If you have a bit longer to stay, then take the time to walk out to Tortuga Bay where there are two beaches to enjoy. Garrapatero also provides a long white beach, and is home to flamingos and white tailed ducks. The Charles Darwin Research Centre provides essential support to the Galapagos National Park set up and is only a short walk from the main town of Puerto Ayora - well worth a stopover to learn a bit more about the islands.

Area 986 square kilometres Population Approximately 12,000 Max altitude 864 metres above sea level Top wildlife Galapagos tortoise, Galapagos lava lizard, white-cheeked pintails, flamingos, sea turtles Visitor sites Lava tubes, Black Turtle Cove, Cerro Dragon, Los Gemelos

WHERE TO STAY From Santa Cruz Island, you will either board your expedition ship, or you can stay for a bit in Pikaia Lodge or Galapagos Safari Camp.

Pikaia Lodge It doesn’t blend into it’s surroundings, but Pikaia does make an impact. A stunning lodge in the highlands of Santa Cruz it has far reaching views out to sea from its infinity pool and Aman Resort style. En-suite rooms are tastefully styled, and there is a great spa, private cinema and delicious food available round the clock.

Galapagos Safari Camp Between the coastal zone and the wetter highlands, Galapagos Safari Camp provides a home from home for the traveller. Not supreme luxury, but the comfortable ensuite tents provide the perfect spot from which to explore the island. The Camp is very family friendly with staff going above and beyond to keep kids entertained.

ESPANOLA ISLAND Espanola is one of the oldest and the southern-most islands in the Galapagos archipelago. It is also one of the most popular islands due to some truly unique species of wildlife; including the waved albatross, Espanola lava lizard, Espanola mockingbird, and Nazca boobies. MAIN ATTRACTIONS The waved albatross is listed as critically endangered and Punta Suarez forms the sole nesting site that these birds return to every year between April and December. Waved albatrosses are the highlight of many wildlife enthusiasts journey in the Galapagos, and their elaborate mating dance, which includes beak fencing and honking, is a top ‘must see’. Other highlights of Punta Suarez include sea lions, marine iguanas, Darwin’s finches and blue-footed boobies. Gardner Bay is one of the best beaches for a bit of chill-out time when exploring the Galapagos. At two kilometres long, this white sand beach attracts numerous sea lions, and green sea turtles can often be seen nesting on the beach between January and March.

Area 60 square kilometres Population 0 Max altitude 206 metres above sea level Top wildlife Waved albatross, giant tortoise, Espanola lava lizards, Darwin’s finches, blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, green sea turtles, sea lions, manta rays, white tipped reef sharks, king angelfish Visitor sites Gardner Bay, Punta Suarez, Gardner Island & Tortuga Rock, Waved Albratross Colony

Tortuga Rock as well as Gardner Island also offer great marine life. Yellowtailed surgeon fish, bump-head parrotfish, manta rays, white tipped reef shark and even playful sea lions are often spotted here.

Marine iguanas here are brightly coloured red and green, and are the only ones to stay bright throughout the year.

ISABELA ISLAND The largest of all the islands, the sea-horse shaped Isabela is one of the wildest and most unique; for those looking for a true adventure and somewhere untouched by the western tourism, such as the ‘bigger’ towns you would find on Santa Cruz and San Cristobal – although it’s all relative.

Right in the north of Isabela is the only place in the entire world where pink iguanas are found; only identified as a seperate species in 2009.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS The main town of Puerto Villamil is accessible by air, but only on limited days of the week; it is untouched to say the least. With volcanic lava on one side and the ocean on the other, the roads are sand at best and there are few bars and eateries dotted around. One of the best examples of a volcano in the islands is Sierra Negra, it has what is considered to be the second largest caldera in the world and provides the perfect chance to get out and stretch your legs with a series of walks in and around the area. The four other principal sites to explore from the town include the tortoise centre, Wall of Tears (a three metre wide, 100 metre long wall built by prisoners during the times a penal colony used to exist on the island), Tintoreras and Villamil Lagoon. Other highlights, visiting by land or sea, include great snorkelling and dive sites at Los Tuneles, Tortuga Island and Tagus Cove, more wild tortoises than all other islands in the Galapagos combined and, due to the Cromwell currents on the west coast, one of the best feeding sites for fish, whales, dolphins and birds. This is one of the best areas to spot humpbacks, minkes, orcas and sperm whales.

WHERE TO STAY Isabela Island can be visited on certain expedition ship itineraries, and you can stay on the island at the wonderful Scalesia Lodge.

Scalesia Lodge Truly remote, Scalesia offers those creature comforts you need after a day’s exploration. Set on the slopes of Sierra Negra, it has large tented en-suite rooms, and a communal area with views over the tropical vegetation below and on to the ocean. We visited this lodge before it was open as the privileged first ever guests!

FERNANDINA ISLAND Most famous for its continuing volcanic eruptions, this is the most western island, the youngest, and the third largest. Even today, Fernandina is the most active of the islands and remains one of the most pristine in the entire archipelago. MAIN ATTRACTIONS A large land iguana population inhabits the rim of the caldera, and the waters surrounding the island provide some of the best sightings for flightless cormorants and Galapagos penguins. The rich marine life is as a result of the Cromwell Current that hits the island from the west resulting in some of the most bio-diverse waters of the archipelago. The main visitor site of Punta Espinosa offers sightings of marine iguanas, flightless cormorants, penguins, sea lions, sally lightfoot crabs, and land iguanas. There are also good dive sites for sightings of sharks and rays, sea horses, marine iguanas and sea turtles.

Santiago is a popular island visited by most of the tourist boats that come to the Galapagos. It was actually the second island visited by Charles Darwin when he arrived on the famous Beagle on October 5, 1835. Unfortunately, Darwin’s records are the only evidence of a once thriving population of land iguanas here. He stated in his book ‘The Voyage of the Beagle’; “We could not for some time find a spot free from their burrows on which to pitch our single tent.” Land iguanas are now extinct on Santiago Island. Due to salt mining here in the 1920s and 1960s, there are roads, but no population. In the 1930s a group of people had a failed attempt at colonising the island, at which point they introduced pigs, goats and donkeys - all of which have played havoc with the ecosystem. Despite this there is still wonderful wildlife here, and some incredible landscapes and landing sites. MAIN ATTRACTIONS

Santiago Island gives you a great chance of spotting the Galapagos fur seal, and is a popular site with expedition ships.

WWW.NATURALWORLDSAFARIS.COM | SALES@NATURALWORLDSAFARIS.COM | UK: +44 (0)1273 691 642 | US: 1866 357 6569 | AU 1800 668 890

James Bay has a few visitors sites which encompass a sea turtle nesting site, fur seal grottos, flamingos and, on occasions, Galapagos hawks. Chinese Hat is a small island a few hundred metres off the coast of Santiago providing a fantastic snorkelling site where you can see sharks, penguins, rays, sea lions and more.

BARTHOLOMEW ISLAND The most visited and photographed island of the archipelago, Bartholomew is also the site of the famed Pinnacle Rock, a volcanic cone formed by magma being expelled from an underwater volcano. MAIN ATTRACTIONS At Isla BartholomĂŠ you can climb a steep trail (including a staircase implemented to save the landscape from erosion) for excellent views of Pinnacle Rock and Santiago Island. At the famous Pinnacle Rock you can swim with sea lions, penguins, sharks, green turtles and more. On the southern beach there is no swimming, but you can easily spot the eagle rays and black-tipped reef sharks from the surface. There is a dive site on Bartholomew which encompasses much of the islands coast (apart from the south). On dives, you will see similar wildlife to that as snorkelling, but going deeper, you can spot red-lipped batfish, sharks and rays.

The diminutive Galapagos penguins have established a small breeding colony here, in a cave right behind the famous Pinnacle Rock.

NORTH SEYMOUR ISLAND Despite it’s diminutive size of 1.83 square kilometres and a maximum altitude of 28 metres, North Seymour Island has the largest nesting sites for many species of birds in the Galapagos. MAIN ATTRACTIONS

North Seymour is home to the largest populations of magnificent frigatebirds, and one of the largest populations of sea lions.

The principal highlights of this island include one of the largest land iguana colonies within the archipelago (about 2,500 of them), swallow tailed gulls, sea lions, frigate birds, (often with red pouches inflated as they are nearly always mating) and blue-footed boobies. Marine iguanas have been seen feasting on land vegetation here, most strange for this marine animal. The nearby Mosquera Island (at only 120 x 600 metres) has one of the best populations of sea lions and is a great spot to observe the local birdlife.

SAN CRISTOBAL ISLAND The easternmost island and fifth largest, San Cristobal has a population of 6,000 (second largest after Santa Cruz) and is home to the capital town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Home to the oldest settlement of the islands, with the only source of fresh water in the archipelago, this is also where Darwin first went ashore in the year 1835. MAIN ATTRACTIONS A variety of visitors sites offer a selection of highlights for this popular island including the sea lion rookery, frigatebirds and greater frigatebirds of Frigatebird Hill, the snorkelling of Isla Lobos, the pelicans, blue-footed boobies and marine iguanas of Cerro Brujo, the giant tortoise reserve, the bachelor sea lions, red footed, blue footed and Nazca gulls of Punta Pitt and the relaxing beach of Ochoa.

GENOVESA ISLAND A horse shoe-shaped island located in the north eastern corner of the archipelago, Genovesa is known as the ‘Bird Island’ due to the sheer variety of birdlife found here. MAIN ATTRACTIONS Prince Philip’s Steps (named after Prince Philip, who visited in 1965 and 1981) provide steep access up through a colony full of Nazca gulls and redfooted boobies. Upon reaching the plateau you continue to one of the best locations to see short-eared owls stalking their petrel prey along the clifftops. The site of Darwin Bay Beach offers the opportunity to see pairs of swallowtailed gulls (the only nocturnal species of gull in the world), lava gulls, great frigatebirds and red-footed boobies. Darwin Bay also provides a fantastic spot for snorkelling and is one of the prime areas to see hammerheads.

SANTA FE ISLAND A relatively flat island, Santa Fe is located to the south east of Santa Cruz Island and forms one of the oldest volcanoes, with rock formations dating back 3.9 million years.

There are two endemic species to this island; the enormous Santa Fe land iguana, and the Santa Fe rice rat.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS Santa Fe is unique in that it is now home to two endemic species on the island, one being that of the Santa Fe land iguana (6,500 – 7,000 individuals) and the other being the Santa Fe rice rat. There is just one visitor site on the island which starts with a wet landing on a small beach, where sea lions are often seen surfing the waves, or napping on the sand. From here there are two trails; a short one that is a great way of seeing the Opuntia cactus up close, as well as Santa Fe iguanas and Galapagos hawks. The second trail includes a steeper cliff climb resulting in excellent views. There are three marine sites here as well; El Fondeador, La Encañada and Costa Este. The highlight is the sea lions, however you can sometimes see various species of rays, as well as sea turtles. At Costa Este on the east coast, you may see Galapagos sharks.

FLOREANA ISLAND Floreana is one of the few populated islands of the Galapagos with approximately 100 residents, most of whom make a living from farming. The island has a very interesting history, and is the location of the very first person to actually be born in the archipelago. Floreana is also the site of the first ‘post office’ in 1793; still a wonderfully exciting and intriguing visitors site today.

Floreana Island was the first to be colonised by Ecuadorians, and is well-known for several mysterious disappearances in the 1930’s, including an Austrian Baroness.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS Post Office Bay is where a group of whalers left a wooden barrel in the year 1793 and called it a post office. Nowadays you can still leave a postcard here and hope that a willing passer-by will deliver it by hand to the ongoing destination. You can also pick up postcards left by others and deliver them yourself. Post Office Bay is also a great spot for snorkelling with the playful sea lions and you might spot some of the resident turtles. Another attraction worth detailing is Devil’s Crown; formed from an eroded volcanic crater, with spikes protruding from the waves in a semi-circle, it’s not hard to see where the name came from. With lots of crevices and intriguing rock formations, it’s a great place to snorkel. Under the surface, sea lions, barrel fish, tiger snake eels, eagle rays, white tipped reef sharks, hammerheads and more play around and explore, while seabirds circle above the water. The current is strong here and we advise including it in your itinerary if you are a strong swimmer. For those very strong swimmers, there is even the opportunity to swim through a tube four or five metres under the surface and come out the other side!

Area 173 square kilometres Population Approximately 100 Max altitude 640 metres above sea level Top wildlife Galapagos flamingos, pintail ducks, largebilled flycatchers, green sea turtles, rays, sea lions Visitor sites Cormorant Point, Post Office Bay, Highlands (Cerro Alieri and Asilo de la Paz)

THE BEST STYLE FOR YOUR JOURNEY

Discover the Galapagos Islands your way

BY BOAT It may come as no surprise that when exploring this famous archipelago, the main mode of transport and exploration is by boat. There are a number of cruise options available, starting with short four night trips. Longer trips, between seven and ten nights, offer the opportunity to see most of the diverse wildlife found on the islands, typically making two landings a day. The boats themselves vary hugely in standards. It’s important to consider the cabin space, size of boat, cuisine, facilities, staff ratio to clients, and the allocated itinerary. Some of our favourite boats include the M/V Evolution, the Athala II, and for those on the lookout for super luxury, you can always charter the beautiful Stella Maris.

WWW.NATURALWORLDSAFARIS.COM | SALES@NATURALWORLDSAFARIS.COM | UK: +44 (0)1273 691 642 | US: 1866 357 6569 | AU 1800 668 890

BY LAND If you can, then our preferred blend of trip is to mix your time on a boat with some time spent on land; firstly to unwind, and secondly to just experience this archipelago from an entirely different perspective. You’ll know by now that most of the islands are uninhabitable, so you won’t find a vast array of lodges or hotel choices throughout your trip, but there are a select few available, and within that we have refined just three that we believe make the perfect addition to any Galapagos itinerary - all of which ave been tried and tested by NWS MD Will Bolsover. We recommend Pikaia Lodge with its far reaching ocean views, the intimate Galapagos Safari Camp, and the brand new Scalesia Lodge.

CLIMATE & WHEN TO GO The Galapagos Islands can actually be visited year round, however we have some recommendations on timing, and travelling at certain times of the year can really limit your experience. In September, most of the ships in the Galapagos Islands go into dry dock due to a windier, cooler climate. But it is still possible to travel with a bit of planning if you choose to travel this time of year.

JUNE TO NOVEMBER These cool months are actually a great time to travel as even though the waters have a bit more of a chill; a lot of the species of bird are nesting making it ideal for photography. Temperatures will remain in the mid 20’s (° C) but the seas will be slightly rougher than the rest of the year, so if you do suffer from sea sickness then this may be a time to avoid.

DECEMBER TO JUNE From December to June the weather is slightly warmer, with calmer seas. This makes the snorkelling marginally better, and is better for those who suffer from seasickness. The wildlife of the Galapagos Islands is wonderfully abundant year round. Certain times of the year are best for hatching chicks or whales arriving, and others for mating rituals or spotting waved albatrosses. If you want to see a particular species, let us know so we can tailor your journey around that and ensure it is timed perfectly, getting you in the right place at the right time.

HONEYMOONS & PROPOSALS A honeymoon is a time to celebrate being together, so do the Galapagos Islands cut it when it comes to romance? Despite the long sandy beaches, romantic sundowners and bubbling jacuzzis under the stars, the Galapagos Islands won’t be to everyone’s honeymoon taste. For at least part of your trip you are going to be on board a boat with other passengers, so privacy may not always be easy; excursions and walks are done in small groups as well. If privacy is not a concern, then you could spend a few days on board a luxury yacht exploring the islands, then take a few days at the end to relax in the comfort of Pikaia Lodge or Galapagos Safari Camp. As you’ll know by now, the wildlife and landscapes here are wonderfully unique, and experiencing them together can be truly magical. You could also combine it with mainland Ecuador where we can always organise further explorations and even an Amazon adventure for the two of you.

NATURAL WORLD SAFARIS HONEYMOON SERVICE We know that all couples are unique and that your honeymoon should reflect just that. Here at Natural World Safaris we pride ourselves on creating bespoke journeys suited to each and both individuals on a honeymoon. Whether you are set on the Galapagos for your special, once in a lifetime holiday, or you have no idea on where you want to go, get in touch with us. We’re a friendly, honest and extremely knowledgeable bunch who specialise in doing this for a living. We know we can help you make this that extraordinary journey you’re looking for; and we usually throw in a couple of surprises along the way too.

GALAPAGOS FAMILY SAFARIS Finding the perfect place for a family safari can be difficult, especially when factoring the different ages, likes and dislikes. So does the Galapagos work well as a family destination? In short, yes. In fact, Will and his son Oscar (five and a half years old) just returned and great fun was had by both.

Many yachts and catamarans have a minimum age of seven years to join a trip. We think that for those eight years old and upwards this is a fantastic destination to explore as a family. Some of the boats we charter even have family departures to ensure that child friendly activities are on offer, specific guides are on hand, and the pace of the itinerary can be toned down a bit so that the family is not flat out. The Galapagos Islands truly do offer a once in a lifetime family adventure as you have the chance to swim with playful sea lions, snorkel with sharks and rays, marvel at iguanas and blue footed boobies and for those with a bit more energy, even do a spot of kayaking.

NATURAL WORLD SAFARIS FAMILY SAFARI SERVICE We can design your Galapagos journey around you and your families’ specific needs, ensuring that everyone gets as much as possible out of this exciting, educational destination. Just give us a call or email us at sales@naturalworldsafaris.com and we can start designing your perfect family itinerary.

The next step Contact our team of Galapagos Island safari specialists and design your very own journey into the extraordinary.

Designing your Galapagos journey We know the Galapagos; we know the wildlife, the landscapes, the accommodation and the logistics. We also know how to make your Galapagos Island itinerary that bit more special. There is more to creating your journey than just booking the cheapest boat possible. This won’t get you to the right place at the right time for the experiences you most long for. In fact, you might need to join a specialist departure for your interests, or design a combination of Ecuador and the Galapagos to really make the most out of your time in this wildlife-rich area of the globe.

DIVING Fancy diving with hammerhead sharks? Or manta rays? Much of the playful marine-life is accessible with a snorkel, and you will often find yourself face to face with curious sea lions or ancientlooking marine iguanas. However, if you want to delve deeper into the waters, there are numerous incredible dive sites peppered throughout the Galapagos, but to dive, you must be on a specialist departure. A majority of trips here focus on the snorkelling and landing sites. Joining a diving departure will ensure you have the correctly trained guides,

the right equipment, and the time/ ability to access some of those hard to reach areas and even the easyto-access dive sites that the other departures just don’t visit. Get in touch for more information on the Galapagos Islands; from specific departures to tailor-made.

PERFECT COMBOS To get to the Galapagos Islands, you must go through Ecuador. Ecuador is hugely diverse with a huge amount to explore; from elegant colonial cities and picturesque Andean highlands, to the Amazon jungle, and to top it off there are some interesting

indigenous cultures to meet. A place of quite overwhelming beauty and a range of authentic experiences, we recommend you take some time to explore here, either before or after your Galapagos journey, or even both. For true wildlife fanatics, we can also tailor an itinerary that combines the fearless wildlife of the Galapagos Islands with tracking Andean pumas in the stunning Torres del Paine in Patagonia, Chile.
