THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO
NAMIBIA SAFARIS
A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE When people talk about African safaris, minds tend to wander towards East African destinations, such as Kenya and Tanzania, or to the South to Botswana or South Africa. Namibia is often overlooked, yet it is the unsung hero of Africa and genuinely offers travellers something absolutely unique, something that many don’t even know exists. Namibia is not one of the ‘big five’ destinations, It is not renowned for its colonial history, or even its days of glory as a safari destination. And that is just one of the reasons why we love it… Namibia is home to outstanding landscapes, with deserts that have sprawled into deserted towns, one of the deepest canyons in the world, and even beaches strewn with whale bones and shipwrecks almost in equal measure. Sea lions surf turquoise waves, rare desert adapted wildlife wanders freely in search of water, ancient rock art livens up huge granite boulders and the world’s largest sand dunes are just begging to be climbed. On top of this, you can explore under your own steam on a self-drive, enjoy a flying safari or go guided – it’s up to you. With Germanic roots and an infrastructure to back this up, Namibia offers a diversity that is offered by few other African destinations and is easy to navigate too. With a variety of stunning landscapes, wild coastlines, world class game viewing and unique camps and lodges, Namibia should actually be at the top of an African enthusiasts list. Affordability is also key, being tied to the South African Rand, the Namibian Dollar makes this destination much more affordable than most other African destinations that are tied to the US Dollar. Namibia is not the first and foremost African destination for wildlife; however it makes up for that in the sheer diversity of what it has to offer. At first glance, Namibia is not an ‘easy sell’, but at NWS, we have in depth experience of this destination with our MD even having enjoyed all it has to offer on a self-drive safari for his honeymoon over Christmas. For further information and for us to tailor the perfect Namibian adventure to meet your specific requirements, feel free to get in touch and we would be more than happy to help. We hope you enjoy our Namibia Safari Guide!

FISH RIVER CANYON What to see Located in the plains of Southern Namibia, Fish River Canyon has been likened to the Grand Canyon, and is one of the deepest canyons in the world! At 161 kilometres long, 27 kilometres wide and 550 metres deep, the Fish River Canyon was originally carved out by the aptly named Fish River. Today the canyon is largely dry and provides a 90 kilometres long hiking trail from the northernmost lookout to the hot springs taking five days to complete.
Where to stay Canyon Lodge
Located just 20 kilometres from the canyon itself, this property is rustic but exudes charm. Set amongst the granite rocks, Canyon Lodge is ideally located to relax and enjoy your surroundings as well as explore Fish River Canyon itself.
WWW.NATURALWORLDSAFARIS.COM | SALES@NATURALWORLDSAFARIS.COM | UK: +44 (0)1273 691 642 | US: 1866 357 6569 | AU 1800 668 890
SOSSUSVLEI & SESRIEM What to see This area represents what Namibia is renowned for and conjures up that archetypal image of monstrous sand dunes dominating the Namibian landscape. Sesriem Canyon provides one of the only permanent water sources throughout this area previously providing an important water source for local inhabitants; a natural canyon that has been carved out by the Tsauchab River, about a kilometre long and 30 metres deep. The dunes of Sossusvlei provide one of the ‘reddest’ landscapes on the African continent, with dunes climbing higher than anywhere else in Namibia, some towering over you at 300 metres. The dunes are at their most glorious at sunrise and sunset as the sun bounces off the dark red sands, providing one of the best places to relax and enjoy the archetypal African sundowner.
Where to stay Little Kulala
One of the (if not the) most luxurious properties in the area providing private access to the Namib-Naukluft National Park as well as the renowned Sossusvlei. This in itself provides clients with the advantage of being able to access the dramatic dunes at the crack of dawn prior to other visitors and therefore providing a much more unique and intimate experience. The dunes are the principal highlight of staying at this lodge, however other activities can include a visit to Sesriem Canyon and a variety of walks throughout the reserve.

SWAKOPMUND What to see The adventure capital of Namibia and some would say even South Africa. Located on the coast, Swakopmund is the perfect staging point to explore all that Namibia has to offer, with the dramatic dunes of Sossusvlei to the south, the Skeleton coast stretching north and some of the best adventure sports right on your doorstep, Swakopmund has something for everyone. Explore the dunes with some of our local experts (Tommy’s desert tours gets you up close and personal to things that you wouldn’t even know are there!), go quad biking through the desert, gaze over the horizon on a balloon safari, or just sit back and relax and enjoy some great local dining.
Where to stay Cornerstone Guesthouse A local B&B, this charming guesthouse is the perfect place for a night or two when you want to explore the town of Swakopmund. Within easy walking distance of the town centre, each of the seven bedrooms has a private entrance, TV, Wi-Fi and is en-suite.
The Stiltz Another one of our favourites, this property is aptly named as it stretches out over the mouth of the Swakop River. Once again, located only a few minutes’ walk from the town centre, The Stiltz has a funky design and each room is linked by a wooden walkway. The Tug Restaurant is from the same family and is a ‘must visit’ for at least one of your meals in Swakopmund.

SKELETON COAST What to see One of the most remote and inhospitable areas of Namibia and maybe even Africa, the Skeleton Coast is a ‘must see’. Harsh winds and big seas relentlessly assault this dramatic coastline resulting in ship carcasses littering the deserted beaches and old mining towns (further south) giving up the ghost to the ever advancing sands. A sobering destination; only parts of the Skeleton Coast are accessible to visitors with some areas being open to self-drive enthusiasts and other areas being limited to fly-in operators.
Where to stay Serra Cafema
In Namibia’s far north-west, this is possibly one of the country’s most remote properties. Set amidst arid landscapes and rugged mountains, this property exudes luxury as it overlooks the surrounding landscape and Kunene River. Serra Cafema affords you one of the best opportunities to truly explore the wilderness of Namibia including sensitively managed visits to the local Himba Community as well as explorations via quad bike.
Skeleton Coast Safaris
When exploring this dramatic coastline you cannot ignore the properties owned by the renowned Skeleton Coast Safaris. More rustic than the likes of Serra Cafema; Kuidas Camp, Leylandsdrift Camp and Kunene River Camp, offer clients a unique ‘safari by air’ experience that you should not pass up on.

What to see A beautifully mountainous region of Namibia also containing a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the largest ancient rock collection of rock art in Southern Africa. Located between the wild Skeleton Coast and the central plateau region, Damaraland forms the ‘north central’ region of Namibia. More rock art is located in the Brandberg Mountains where you will also find the ‘white lady’ painting located. In regards to wildlife, Damaraland is home to a variety of desert-adapted animals including a variety of grazers; giraffe, gemsbok, kudu and springbok; predators; lions and hyenas, and even the rare black rhino and the beautiful desert adapted elephants.
Where to stay Mowani Mountain Camp
Located between the Ugab and Huab Rivers, Mowani is the sister property to Camp Kipwe and offers clients the ultimate luxury when exploring the Damaraland region. Upon first glance, you may think you are on a Star Wars set as the dome shaped rondavels peer out from the granite boulders. En-suite luxury accommodation with private verandas and stunning vistas make this a highlight of any Namibian journey.
ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
WWW.NATURALWORLDSAFARIS.COM | SALES@NATURALWORLDSAFARIS.COM | UK: +44 (0)1273 691 642 | US: 1866 357 6569 | AU 1800 668 890
What to see The focus for much of the wildlife in Namibia, Etosha National Park is a highlight of any visit. Don’t get your expectations up in the hope of beautiful lush national park scenery such as you would expect in East or Southern Africa, Etosha provides the drama and beauty but on an entirely different scale. Dry and arid Etosha is the third largest national park in the world, with about 20,000 square kilometres playing home to 340 species of bird and approximately 114 species of mammal. Covered by a vast salt pan (originally a lake fed by the Kunene River), the surrounding bush is home to a diverse range of wildlife that congregates around the sparsely located waterholes. The big hitters of the animal kingdom here include lion, cheetah, leopard, desert elephants, giraffe, zebra, and a variety of grazers.
Where to stay Ongava Lodge
So at the high end once again, Ongava is set in its own private reserve bordering the renowned Etosha National Park. Consisting of three separate properties including Ongava Tented Camp, Ongava Lodge and Little Ongava, this ‘property’ provides from ‘adventure’ standard to exclusive luxury. All of the properties have their own advantages and offer ideal access to one of the best wildlife regions of Namibia. A highlight of your time in the Ongava Reserve includes tracking rhino on foot - not for the faint hearted!
KAOKLAND, KUNENE RIVER & CAPRIVI STRIP
WWW.NATURALWORLDSAFARIS.COM | SALES@NATURALWORLDSAFARIS.COM | UK: +44 (0)1273 691 642 | US: 1866 357 6569 | AU 1800 668 890
P Kaokland For us this is one of the most attractive areas of Namibia, however that is because it is one of the least accessible, and therefore maybe not for everyone! Sparsely populated, this vast mountain wilderness is home to the ancient Himba tribe and is only accessible via an organised safari or, if under your own steam, with some decent support. A variety of endangered wildlife resides here with rhino, mountain zebra, desert elephant, (thought to possibly be a rare sub-species), ostrich and giraffe all making an appearance.
Kunene River Running along the northern boundary of Namibia, the Kunene River affords diverse scenery ranging from rugged mountains to lush bushland bordering the river itself. Home to the local Himba tribe, the Kunene also provides the perfect habitat for some great resident wildlife.
Caprivi Strip A bizarre strip of land running eastwards from Namibia and stretching out along the northern border of Botswana. Caprivi is surrounded by the Okavango, Chobe, Kwando and Zambezi Rivers and is rich in resident wildlife providing critical habitat for endangered wild dogs and an important elephant migration corridor. Whilst the Caprivi is unique and alluring, it is fairly tricky to access and has limited accommodation options, our favourite is Lianshulu Lodge.
CONSERVATION: THE AFRICAT FOUNDATION
WWW.NATURALWORLDSAFARIS.COM | SALES@NATURALWORLDSAFARIS.COM | UK: +44 (0)1273 691 642 | US: 1866 357 6569 | AU 1800 668 890
AfriCat Foundation Located between Windhoek and Etosha National Park, the Okonjima Game reserve consists of 55,000 acres of protected habitat and is home to the AfriCat Foundation. The principle aims of AfriCat fall into the following categories: rehabilitation of wildlife (principally leopard, wild dog, hyena & cheetah), human-wildlife conflict mitigation, community support, conservation through education and research. Okonjima provides the perfect base from which to take all of this in with a variety of standards of accommodation available including the Omboroko Campsite, Plains Camp, Bush Camp, Bush Suite and The Villa. During your time here you can ‘radio track’ leopards and visit nocturnal hides to see caracal, porcupines and the notorious honey badgers. You can also join a Bushman walking trail, watch for cheetahs and visit the highly informative Carnivore Care Centre.

CLIMATE & WHEN TO GO Namibia is considered a year round destination, and it can definitely be enjoyed at any time. The main factor to consider when planning your Namibia safari is the weather, and there are big variations, even just going from day to night.
June to September Considered as the winter, this time gives you better chances of high quality game viewing with wildlife congregated around water sources; there are fewer mosquitos in the northern territories, and overall it is a cooler time to travel. This leads to it being a busier time for tourists and other travellers. Morning and evenings are cold at this time, with lows of 5째C and highs of 18째C.
November to March In Namibia this is the summer, and the rainy season. This is a quieter tourism period with lush green landscapes, migrating birds, beautiful sunsets and stunning electrical storms! As you can imagine, the downside of travelling in this rainy period is, indeed, the rain. With more water, the wildlife is free to spread out and sightings can be slightly harder. This is the time our Managing Director travelled on his Christmas honeymoon, and he had excellent sightings including desert elephant, desert lion, black rhino, cheetah, leopard and more. Namibia itself is not a tricky destination to drive through as more often than not the roads are well graded gravel roads, there are facilities at most camping spots, and it is fairly easy to navigate your way around. It is however still Africa and the distances you cover are vast, the wildlife is exactly that wild, and the wilderness can be bewildering. To that extent, this is also where the option of a self-drive is so ideal as you can take in as little or as much of it as you want. If you want the freedom of your own travel then go for it and we will just help with booking the camp sites, organising your car and plotting the route; if however you want to feel a bit more secure, then still opt for the self-drive but incorporate into that some lovely lodges along the way so that as and when you want you can dip in and out of the adventure and seek comfort in a luxury lodge for the night.

HONEYMOONS & PROPOSALS? Is Namibia good for honeymooners? Subject to what you are looking for, yes! Namibia can be perfect for honeymooners looking for a combination of adventure and luxury. Natural World Safaris Managing Director, Will Bolsover, headed to Namibia for his honeymoon back in 2007. Having travelled and guided in Africa extensively, Will and his wife decided to enjoy a self-drive safari from the red dunes of the south all the way up through the heart of Namibia and Damaraland into Etosha. It wasn’t all rustic and edgy however as they decided to mix up some of the camping with one or two luxury properties along the way. In this way, they enjoyed both the independence and flexibility of a self-drive, and the luxury and safety net of some exclusive properties. “There is nothing like having the freedom to explore wild Africa than with a self-drive. Just you and your newlywed partner out in nature, finding your way together. There’s something just so special about that.” - Will Namibia is home to some amazing honeymoon experiences, from sunset champagne balloon safaris, to sand dune sundowner picnics and romantic dinners under the stars, miles from anywhere. Then for those who wish to have a more adventurous side to your journey, try quad biking, wind surfing and camel riding. We can of course throw in a few surprises too making your honeymoon or romantic getaway that bit more unforgettable and special...
And for proposals? We can’t think of a more romantic setting than the Namib Desert at sunset for a marriage proposal. And neither could world famous explorer and TV personality Steve Backshall who proposed to his new fiancée whilst on safari with us in 2015. Not only was Helen Glover ‘the happiest girl in the world’, but we also created their ‘perfect holiday’...

NAMIBIA FOR FAMILY HOLIDAYS Is Namibia good for families? Yes, but maybe for an ‘older’ family with children of more of a teenage age rather than younger. Whilst Namibia is comfortable, it does not afford many luxuries for kids, so a family travelling to Namibia needs to be prepared for adventure and wilderness, and be looking for something out of the ordinary. Where Namibia is better suited to families compared to other African destinations is that it is not 100% geared towards wildlife viewing. Rather than game drives every day, you can head out quad biking, enjoy hot air balloon rides, track rhino in the desert or surf sand dunes. And that is not all, from Swakopmund alone you have options such as kite surfing, camel rides, scenic flights, kayaking, and even skydiving. There is also the AfriCat Foundation so they can learn about the big cats and see them up close. With families ourselves, we know that being an adventurers playground alone isn’t always enough to convince you. Safety plays a big part in choosing your next journey and it is worth knowing that Namibia is mainly malaria free, has safe drinking water, low crime rates and great roads. It is also English speaking. The option of self-drive means you can travel in your own time and spend as long as you choose in your vehicle, you can combine a spot of luxury with some beautiful lodgings along the way that are so remote, the last thing on your mind will be the noise the kids are making in the pool...

There are numerous incredible places to do this throughout your Namibia journey; however if you want a bit of beach time you’ll have to fly to the Indian Ocean. Getting the timing right for this is crucial for a smooth ride, but it can be done. Our recommendations would be Mauritius, Mozambique or the Seychelles.
With South Africa being so close, it would almost be criminal not to head down there. The options in South Africa are just far too many to mention, but as a taster; follow the Garden Route, go wine tasting, check out Table Mountain, relax with the penguins of Boulder Beach, go kayaking, enjoy wildlife safaris, explore the magnificent city of Cape Town, go horse riding and have a night on the town. South Africa is fast becoming the adventure capital of the world and combines perfectly with Namibia.
