L

ike many of you have experienced, 2018 was an unprecedented time of growth, learning and healing for me. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to publish Natural Awakenings Twin Cities magazine and for the ability to work closely with the small business owners who bring this magazine to our readers each month through their advertising support and editorial collaboration. Having attended many events and expos this past year, I have been Candi Broeffle honored to introduce new readers to Natural Awakenings and have enjoyed meeting long-term readers who shared memories of their favorite articles and positive experiences with our advertisers. Building these connections and deepening these relationships are even more fulfilling than I dreamed possible when I purchased this magazine. As I look to 2019, I am excited for the many opportunities that lay ahead, including a new radio show I will be hosting on AM950 called Green Tea Conversations. Please join me at 10 a.m., on Sunday mornings, as I conduct in-depth interviews with natural health professionals about the latest modalities, practices and methods available to help us lead healthier, happier lives. The overall theme for 2019 is overcoming fear, which can more easily be done when we gain knowledge about our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. This knowledge increases our confidence, allowing us to more fully trust our own intuition—the gut feeling we have that guides us in making better life decisions. The inaugural show on January 6 will feature an interview with the founder of Natural Awakenings Twin Cities magazine, Jackie Flaherty. We will learn about her journey in starting the publication seven years ago, some of her fondest memories, the challenges she overcame and perhaps get a peek into her future plans. Show topics in the coming weeks will include creating healthy homes, natural approaches to pain relief and holistic dentistry. All shows are recorded and can be received online or anywhere you get your podcasts. The promises of 2019 include deep connection, expanded knowledge and abundant wellness—I’m putting it out there. Won’t you join me? Wishing you prosperity,

ero Dance Fitness is bringing Groove Dancefloors to locations throughout the Twin Cities. Groove is a different way to work out that doesn’t just have the participant follow an instructor’s dance moves. Instead, while a facilitator provides basic choreography, the participant makes each movement their own by adding exactly the style they want, based on whatever feels right for their level of fitness. The World Groove Movement was founded in 2011, by Misty Tripoli, creator of The Groove Method, after 20 years of teaching movement and spending 10 years as an elite trainer, inspiring thousands through her love of dance, truth and higher consciousness. Her powerful yet surprisingly simple method to movement, mindfulness and balance, easy and accessible to everyone, has evolved into a dance movement with Groove Dancefloors in over 25 countries. All genres of music are used. Classes typically run about an hour and include a warmup, dance, stretching and a brief meditation. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat for stretching/meditation if desired. No dance experience is required and all fitness levels are welcome. Some seating is included in and around the dancefloors for those participants that need to take a break or wish to groove from a seated position without being separated from the class. Beet Juice Boosts Stamina Beetroot juice supplements increase exercise duration and intensity for heart failure patients with a condition called reduced ejection fraction, which affects about half of such patients. In previous studies, beets have been shown to increase exercise capacity for healthy people because they increase nitric oxide levels in the blood.

Women that feel highly stressed on a daily basis have a lower ability to conceive, report Boston University School of Medicine researchers. In a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, 4,769 couples that were trying to conceive were followed for a year. Those women with the highest self-reported stress were 13 percent less likely to conceive than women that reported little stress. Men being under high stress had no effect on conception, but couples were a quarter less likely to conceive if the man’s stress score was low and the woman’s was high, which the researchers termed “partner stress discordance.” In North America, about one out of four women and one out of five men of reproductive age report daily psychological stress.

Nettle, a common roadside weed, may offer hope for sufferers of inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. Research from Iran’s University of Medical Sciences tested 59 patients with inflammatory bowel disease in a 12-week, double-blind clinical trial with an extract of nettle leaf (Urtica dioica). Those receiving the nettle leaf extract had lower blood levels of the C-reactive protein inflammatory marker along with a significant improvement in their inflammatory bowel disease quality-of-life scores.

Daily Walks Make Kids Healthier Thanks to a program called The Daily Mile, Scottish schoolchildren have shown improvements in their fitness and body composition, researchers from the universities of Edinburgh and Sterling report. Started by a teacher in 2012, the initiative encourages children to run, jog or walk around their school grounds during a 15-minute recess from classes in addition to normal activity and physical education lessons. For the study, 391 pupils between 4 and 12 years old wore accelerometers to record their activity and were checked for body fat and overall fitness. Compared to a control group, they increased their physical activity by 9.1 minutes a day, lowered sedentary time by 18.2 minutes, ran 42 yards farther and

significantly lowered their body fat. “[The study] suggests that The Daily Mile is a worthwhile intervention to introduce in schools, and that it should be considered for inclusion in government policy, both at home and abroad,” says study author Colin Moran, Ph.D. To date, the Scottish Government has extended it to half of the country’s primary schools, plus nurseries, colleges, universities and businesses. The Daily Mile Foundation reports that 3,600 schools in 35 countries, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Germany, Ireland, Jamaica, the Netherlands and the U.S., have embraced the program.

Eating Mediterranean Diet Helps Save Eyesight The risk of late-stage, age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness worldwide, can be lowered by 41 percent by eating a Mediterranean diet, according to a new study presented by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). The research, which followed nearly 4,500 French and Dutch adults aged 55 and older for 21 years, found that no single food component lowered the risk; rather, it was the nutrient-rich diet itself. The findings correlate with previous research that links the Mediterranean diet, typically rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, fish and olive oil, to a longer lifespan and a lower risk of heart disease and cognitive decline. “You are what you eat,” says AAO spokesperson Emily Chew, M.D. “It’s time to take quitting a poor diet as seriously as quitting smoking.”

Artificial Sweeteners Harm Gut Microbes Six popular artificial sweeteners approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration—aspartame, sucralose, neotame, saccharine, advantame and acesulfame potassium-k—were found to be toxic to digestive gut microbes in a new paper published in Molecules. Researchers at Israel’s Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University tested each sweetener along with 10 sports drinks that contained them. They discovered that otherwise healthy bacteria found in the digestive system became toxic when they came into contact with even one mg/ml (less than onehundredth of a teaspoon) of the artificial sweeteners.

Optimism Linked to Better Heart Health Being upbeat helps heart health, reports a new review of research from Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Analyzing dozens of studies on psychological wellbeing involving hundreds of thousands of people, the researchers found that the most optimistic people are more likely to kick a smoking habit, exercise regularly and favor fruits and vegetables over processed meat and sugary foods. Mindfulness programs such as meditation, yoga or tai chi can help enhance optimism by reducing anxiety and stress while boosting quality of life, say the study authors. The researchers also highlighted a 2017 study that found that women in the top quarter of optimism were 40 percent less likely to die from heart disease.

Rare Breed Monstrous Morass Great Pacific Garbage Patch Out of Control

In the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and California, the 80,000-ton Great Pacific Garbage Patch is growing. Encompassing 600,000 square miles, the world’s largest such dump is twice the size of Texas, according to a three-year mapping effort by eight organizations. “To solve a problem, we need to understand it first,” says Boyan Slat, CEO of Dutch-based nonprofit The Ocean Cleanup. “The bad part is that there is more [there] than what we thought. The good part is that most of the plastic is still large objects. Just 8 percent of the plastic is micro plastic. It’s not too late to do something about it.” Fishing gear comprises an estimated half of the debris. The Ocean Cleanup intends to capture, concentrate and ship the materials from the patch back to land.

Exmoor Ponies Beat the Odds The Exmoor pony, which inhabits an area bordered by Devon and Somerset counties in England, is currently listed as endangered by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. It’s believed that these ponies derive from the original prehistoric horse that made the trek from Alaska to Great Britain some 130,000 years ago. Today, about 150 Exmoor ponies roam free on the moor and many more are being reared on farms in other parts of the UK. The Exmoor ponies benefit the environment, attract visitors and increase awareness of environmental conservation.

The Problem With Bottled Water Is the Bottle One million plastic bottles are sold around the world each minute. Most are used for bottled water, and most end up in the trash. As demand grows, especially in China, so does the bottle problem. According to environmental watchdog Euromonitor, if the present rate of consumption is not reduced, humans will use an estimated half a trillion plastic bottles a year by 2021. The French mineral water brand Evian is part of the problem, but is working on a plan to address it through a new approach. The company plans to use 100 percent recycled plastic by 2025 and to partner with a nonprofit focused on collecting ocean plastic.

People relying on plant-based diets can find it challenging to honor their philosophies when enjoying a night out in a beer hall. But in Quincy, Massachusetts, the tavern Rewild is giving hope to those that want to get a little buzzed and still trust the menu. Owner Pat McAuley is working with chef Will Hernandez to offer vegan food at affordable prices. McAuley says, “There’s no other place in Massachusetts that you can go have a few beers, hang out with friends and eat plant-based food. My primary goal of the whole project is to just bring plant-based food in a social and fun way.”

If Your Walls Could Speak by Annette Rugolo

H

ave you thought about the energy in your home and what it would tell you if it could speak? There is a very popular saying that “everything is energy” and it is especially true when it comes to the energy created by everyone who lives and has ever lived in your home. “Everything is energy” means that emotional energy such as fear, anger, hate and grief as well as energy created by love, joy, compassion and peace creates certain vibrations that continue to exist once birthed. The emotion hate carries a lower vibration than that of love. You may have felt this difference when you’ve been around someone spewing hate as opposed to someone in a state of joy. When people talk about “clearing the air”, they are not usually referring to the energy created over decades or even centuries, but there is an understanding that some kind of energy between two people or a group of people needs to be cleared to return everyone to a place of harmony.

The energy created in a home, both positive and negative, not only hangs out in the air but is also absorbed into the walls and furniture. I

encountered this situation recently when a client called to let me know something had changed in her house—what had felt light was now feeling heavy. I had cleared her home of negative vibrations a year before and she and her family had been enjoying the benefits of their energetically uplifting space. During our phone conversation, we began talking about various events that had occurred since I had last seen her, including the death of her mother-in-law and the move of her father-in-law into a nursing home. She then informed me that it was somewhat stressful because they had to make room in her home for all of her in-laws’ furniture until they could give it to family or sell it. When I questioned her about when her home started to feel heavy, she realized it was after the furniture was moved in. What she had taken into the house was all of the vibrational energy created for over 50 years by her in-laws who argued a lot and had been sick for more than 10 years. Once I knew where the energy came from, it helped me know what to do to clear it. Many of the realtors I have talked with over the years understand that energy remains in the house after someone moves out. They describe one type of house as a divorce house. Many times, if a couple sells a house after an especially bitter divorce, the couple that moves

Think of negative energy as a cloud that hangs out in the space. into the house will be divorced within two to three years. That couple moves out, another moves in and also is divorced after a few years. Thus, the house becomes known as the “divorce house”. Think of negative energy as a cloud that hangs out in the space. This cloud of energy, even though it can’t be seen, affects the people living in the home. If they cannot stay above the negative energy, they are influenced by it. It can be compared to how we feel when there are cloudy days for more than a week. It begins affecting our mood, how we feel and how we respond to others. When the sun returns, everything feels so much brighter and lighter. This is exactly how people feel after clearing the energy of their homes. Clearing old, stale, negative energy allows higher levels of prana into the space and it actually looks and feels brighter.

The start of a new year is a great time to clear the air. Along

with decluttering and refreshing our homes physically, it is just as important to do some energetic clearing. Some ways to begin clearing your space is by burning sage, playing high frequency music or sprinkling salt in the corners of a room. Many people use black tourmaline to absorb negative energy. Green plants in a home will also act as natural filters for negative energy. Space clearing meditations are also helpful. The space clearing method used by some professional dowsers gets to the source of the disturbed energy and goes deeper as it clears the energy not only hanging around in the air but also from the walls and furniture. This can also be used for land and businesses. Many dowsers work onsite or remotely. Annette Rugolo is the author of Soul Whisperer: Releasing Lost Souls. She has been transforming homes through dowsing and space clearing since 2005 and has been teaching classes since 2006. For more information about the class or having your home energetically healed, call 612-605-8608. To receive a free, guided Space Clearing Meditation, visit Annette Rugolo.com. See ad, page 18. All adversity leads to light if we allow it. During this dark period of time while I was ill, I found The International Institute for Building Biology and Ecology. This long-standing institute has taught me how to find my way out of the environmental nightmare I faced and get past the fear. Building Biology teaches by empowering us to assure our own health in the homes in which we live. If you are in the market for a new home to heal in, or if you have a mysterious illness and suspect that your environment might be playing a part in your ill health, take your first step towards better health by looking at the environment around your house.

GETTING BEYOND ILLNESS CREATE A HEALTHY HOME Lessons of a Personal Journey by Carrigan Curtis

N

early three years ago, I signed a three-year lease for a small home in a lovely area west of Minneapolis where I planned to stay while looking for the perfect property to build my “dream home”. Within only a month of living in the house, I found myself becoming increasingly sick. I couldn’t shake the extreme fatigue I felt which at times resulted in the need to sleep all day. My digestive system shut down, limiting my diet to almost only organic vegetables, and my brain was clear and active for only few hours a day. I had suffered from mold poisoning many years before and suspected early on that the cause of my drastic and rapid health deterioration was due to mold in the house. I began in earnest to find the source of my illness. My search revealed that the house did indeed have a moisture-intrusion problem resulting in mold, which had not been obvious when I viewed the home in February (mold is generally dormant in the winter). I soon learned that the moisture problems were due to shoddy workmanship on a remodel the landlord had done some 10 years earlier and the lack of consistent maintenance since then, which had created the mold growth within the walls and around improperly installed plumbing lines. Now, after nearly three years of pushing a very reluctant landlord to repair the problems, I am finally in good, albeit precarious, health. When it dawned on me that my lease was up in only a matter of months, I actually felt paralyzed instead of being overjoyed that I would finally be leaving the source of such a long and debilitating illness. Fear of the buildings we live in is a common result for people who suffer from environmental illnesses such as multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), electro-hypersensitivity (EHS) or have suffered from mold-induced illnesses similar to what I experienced over the last few years. The battle for my health had made me battle weary and the thought of facing the possibility of issues with a new home was frightening.

Electromagnetic radiation is on the raise and can cause EHS among other major health issues, according to the 2012 BioInitiative Report. If you are looking for a new home, make sure you are at least a mile away from the nearest cell phone tower. Look for a home that does not have a radio frequency enabled smart electrical meter or look into opting out of the meter and have it replaced with an analog electrical meter. If neither of these are options, have a Building Biology Electromagnetic Radiation Specialist (EMRS) inspect your home for ways to make the environment less electromagnetically toxic for you.

Living near conventional farmland can contribute to an unusually high level of pesticides in our blood which greatly increases health disorders, according to the American Journal of Public Health. Pesticides and herbicides used on crops can contribute to MCS illness. Even if you are over a mile away from farmland, the pesticides and herbicides can stay in the air for extended periods of time and react with sunlight to form new, even more toxic chemicals. It’s best to be at least a couple of miles away from conventional farmland and have a high-quality waterfiltration system installed.

Marshland and lakes are beautiful, but can increase the amount of moisture in your environment. When moisture is combined with warmth and certain building materials, mold is inevitable. Longterm exposure to mold hidden in walls can cause numerous health concerns. Ensuring all exterior gutters are in working order, caulking around windows and doors and proper soil levels to direct water away

Fear that a “sanctuary” will never be realized is a very real issue when we lack the knowledge to repair our health and our homes. ~ Carrigan Curtis from the house can all go a long way in making sure the outside of the house is water tight. When moisture levels are high in the surrounding environment due to lakes or marshland, air filtration and air exchange systems are vital to keeping the interior of the building dry. Once you have dealt with your home’s outside environmental issues by shielding EMRs, making sure your home is pesticide and herbicide free, and dealing with any moisture intrusion issues, then you can start looking at how to create a healthy home on the interior. Here are some items to consider:

n Mold is an immune suppressant, and long-term exposure to mold allows viruses and bacteria to take hold in your body and make you ill. Take a look under your sinks and in your basement. If the areas smell at all musty, then there is probably a mold and moisture problem. Testing for mold can sometimes help locate the source of the issue, but generally if you see any sign of long-term water intrusion, you should seek out professional help to locate the source and remove all drywall, wood or carpet that has been in contact with moisture. Our homes should be our sanctuaries from the hectic pace of the world. Fear that a “sanctuary” will never be realized is a very real issue when we lack the knowledge to repair our health and our homes. We all deserve good health, and by learning the importance of maintaining, repairing and protecting our home environments, we can find ourselves living in the healthy home of which we have always dreamed. n The first priority for a healthy indoor environment is a bedroom sanctuary where you can rest and allow your body to heal and repair each night. To shield your body from EMRs that might be unavoidable and out of your control, you can sleep under a shielded canopy from Safe Living Technologies. A canopy can reduce radio frequencies from cell towers and smart meters to very low levels as long as the electrical circuits have been shut off in the bedroom while using the canopy. n Cleaning products, laundry detergent and personal hygiene products generally contain an overabundance of chemicals, all of which can impair your immune system’s ability to properly deal with “intruders”. Make sure you check labels and throw away any suspect products. There are great substitutions available these days with natural and organic ingredients at your local co-op. n Your garage can be a constant source of pollutants. Most of us store a plethora of chemicals in it and running the car engine produces combustion byproducts that linger for up to eight hours after the car has been driven out. Seal the door between the garage and the house so the carbon monoxide and other toxins don’t flood into your house every time you open the service door. Exit the garage from the overhead or side door and enter the main house from the outside instead. January 2019

ith the merry-making furor of the holidays behind us, it’s that time of year when our bodies are crying out for some detox and rejuvenation. Aside from getting back to the basics—a healthy diet and daily exercise—we can take a page from traditional Chinese and Indian medical practices and holistic approaches and use natural, organby-organ procedures to renew our bodies and restore inherent vitality. “Strengthening our organs is critical because the organs create the vital essences of life, and our emotional and mental health depends to a great extent on how healthy our organs are,” notes T. Caylor Wadlington, a doctor of Oriental medicine and acupuncture teacher in Denver. “In working to revitalize and re-energize the organs, we renew not just our physical body, but also our sense of well-being.” Here’s a guide to a gentle fix-up campaign for the five organs considered vital for life in both Western and Eastern medicine: 16

Boost the Brain

“Stress can lead to imbalance of the brain’s neurotransmitters, making it more difficult to focus, concentrate, relax and sleep—but it’s reversible, and the brain can absolutely heal from these effects under the right circumstances,” says integrative neurologist Ilene S. Ruhoy, M.D., Ph.D., of the Center for Healing Neurology, in Seattle.

Assess it: If you find it hard concentrating, sleeping, getting things done, remembering where things are and not being grouchy, the brain could be on stress-related overload. See a doctor if teeth grinding, high blood pressure, shortness of breath, fainting or dizziness develop. Rejuvenate the Heart

Stress also increases hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which drive up blood pressure, blood sugar and inflammation, says holistic cardiologist Joel Kahn, M.D., of Detroit, author of The Whole Heart Solution: Halt Heart Disease Now with the Best Alternative and Traditional Medicine.

Assess it: Shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, anxiety, panic and swollen feet or ankles are signs the heart may be overloaded. Get medical help immediately if there is unusual deep exhaustion, unexplained weakness, nausea, dizziness, chest pain or pain that spreads to the arms. Eat this: “The best foods for a stressed

heart are those rich in magnesium. I like a giant green, leafy salad, often organic arugula, with blueberries, pumpkin seeds and walnuts,” says Kahn.

Detox the Kidneys The kidneys are hardworking, fist-sized organs just below the back rib cage that filter waste and toxins out of 200 quarts of blood a day.

Assess it: Fatigue, feeling cold, short-

eurofeedback, often referred to as “brain training”, is a specialized application of biofeedback that functions to change brain circuitry by changing the way the brain processes information. In essence, it utilizes the brain’s natural capacity to change, leading to enhanced self-regulation. This form of treatment provides individuals of all ages a sense of agency to regulate their own nervous system, leading to better adaptation skills. During the training process, the client’s brain is observed in action from moment to moment. The desired outcome of neurofeedback training is changes in brainwave patterns. The desired change in brainwave activity is specific to the individual and to the condition being treated or the skill enhancement of focus. The process begins with a comprehensive mapping of the brain, referred to as quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG). The data from the qEEG is used to inform treatment protocol. In the treatment protocol clients monitor and analyze brain signals that are picked up by surface electrodes placed on the scalp. Then the signal from the electrodes is processed by a computer and the client receives feedback about key brainwave frequencies. The information about the brainwave activity is shown to the client (via a video game) who then tries to change the activity level. The client receives auditory and visual feedback about those attempts. When the client is successful in making brainwave activity changes to more desirable patterns, they receive a reward (the audio or visual feedback). When these small changes are repeatedly reinforced (an operant conditioning process), it leads to brain changes. The brain is being “shaped” by this active process. Repeated experience results in increased connections among neurons and in greater strength in the existing connections (this is natural brain training in action). The learning that happens through neurofeedback training is permanent.

Primary research findings on neurofeedback support its effectiveness with a variety of applications in the categories of cognitive skill enhancement, peak performance enhancement and symptom reduction. One main area of supported application is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD results from experiencing trauma. Trauma is defined as damage to the mind, body and spirit that occurs as the result of either a severely distressing event (big T trauma) such as rape, sexual abuse, assault, war, accident, terrorism, etc., or a series of intensely stressful experiences (little t trauma) such as emotional neglect and/ or abandonment, bullying, living in significant chaos, family violence, neighborhood violence, social exclusion, etc. Trauma disrupts neurocognitive development often leading to socio, emotional and cognitive impairments which leave individuals more prone to adopting health-risk behaviors leading to negative health/well-being outcomes (heart disease, obesity, liver disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, anxiety, depression, chemical abuse, suicide, absenteeism, impaired work productivity, financial problems). Neurofeedback helps individuals to retrain the parts of their brain that may have been impacted by trauma. In addition to treating trauma-related responses, neurofeedback has been found to be effective in the following:

Cognitive Skill and Peak Performance Enhancement

• improving working memory performance • increasing motivation and cognitive performance enhancement • improving cognitive processing speed and executive function • increasing focus and improving grades • athletic performance enhancement • music performance enhancement

Resolution of Condition Symptoms

• reducing hyperactivity and impulsivity, improving attention and reducing emotional and behavior disturbances in children with ADHD • significantly improving executive functioning: inhibiting impulses, enhancing focus and ability to attend to information • reducing affect dysregulation

• producing significant improvements in depression • improving effects of ADHD: attention, hyperactivity, distraction • facilitating pain management: directly affecting the processing of pain perception • improving the level of daily functioning in children with autism spectrum disorder (less aggressive; more cooperation; better communication, attention span and sensory motor skills) • significantly reducing headache frequency in patients with recurrent migraines • reducing of symptoms related to attention and mood in individuals with traumatic brain injury Considering the potential for enhanced brain functioning that the research is suggesting, the potential long-term impact of neurofeedback is a sense of empowerment and well-being for the individual. Silver Thread and Golden Opportunities

By 1999, it was clear that Americans had a voracious appetite for well-researched, practical information about the latest natural approaches to nutrition, fitness, personal growth and sustainable living. The Natural Awakenings franchise was born that year, conceived as a local magazine in many different communities—now 74 markets in the U.S.—anchored by a national editorial team that explores and anticipates the latest trends in mind, body and spirit. Readership of the print magazines is 2.8-million strong, plus a broad online and digital reach. Bruckman’s holistic-minded passion for health, wellness and integrative therapies has awakened in like-minded entrepreneurs a desire to embrace her mission. As Paul Chen, publisher of the Atlanta franchise puts it: “Awakenings of the heart speak to our desire for deeper and stronger personal relationships. Awakenings of the mind speak to our desire to learn more, faster, and optimize our mental capacities. Awakenings of the soul speak to our desire to develop greater love and compassion for all living beings equally and an increasing understanding of and connection with whatever it is we believe lies beyond our small, individual human selves.” The magazine, in turn, has awakened its readers to new ways of connecting both with their communities and each other. Natural Awakenings has become a go-to guide for local community events, products and practitioners in all of its markets. “We love to spread light,” says Bruckman. “Natural Awakenings has played a significant role in fueling the wellness revolution I saw emerging all those years ago, propelled by the kindred spirits who read, advertise and contribute

Natural Awakenings Mission Statement To empower individuals to live a healthier lifestyle on a healthier planet. To educate communities on the latest in natural health and sustainability. To connect readers with local wellness resources and events, inspiring them to lead more balanced lives. to our magazines. Our publishers are torchbearers aligned with the vision of a healthier world and the mission to facilitate that transformation.” During a lifetime of holistic-minded entrepreneurship, Bruckman, a constant gardener, continues to personally tend each new crop of ideas that germinate on the pages of her magazines which bear the imprint, “Healthy Living, Healthy Planet.” By identifying and responding to a simple need in one community, she has tapped into a universal spirit that exceeded her wildest expectations. “If you have the heart, vision and enthusiasm to help make the world a better place, a greater force just might step in to enable success beyond anything you imagined. The real ‘natural awakening’ is about each of us waking up to who we truly are and the kind of world we can create together.” We can’t always be shaded by the trees that we grow, yet after 25 years, the seeds Bruckman planted have branched across a nation and borne fruit that will make a difference in countless lives for many years to come. It is my honor to join her on this journey as Natural Awakenings celebrates its silver anniversary. Jan Hollingsworth is the national editor of Natural Awakenings magazine.

WINTER WELLNESS

BEGINS WITH YOU by Dr Una Forde

C

hinese medicine recognizes 12 major meridians that run through the human body. Seasonally, you have different meridians that are affected by the weather. In the winter months, the bladder and kidney meridians need extra support as these are adversely affected by dryness. It’s important to drink a lot of water and use humidifiers to avoid dehydration and undue stress on these meridians. If you use salt in your diet, then it’s important to use healthy types like Himalayan, Celtic, unprocessed sea salt or naturally occurring vegetable salts from sea vegetables or celery. Winter is also a good time for inner reflection and working through fears and anxieties as these weaken the kidney meridian. This meridian governs the brain, hair, ears and bones as well as willpower. If you’re experiencing symptoms of poor memory and concentration or hair loss, tinnitus or weak bones and teeth, then the kidney meridian is most likely out of balance. In his book, Love Your Organs, Love Yourself, Warren King states, “In Chinese medicine kidneys are viewed as the center of the vital force or chi so it’s important to keep them strong.” One method that can help determine what’s going on with the body is health kinesiology (HK). This is a holistic method that uses kinesiology (muscle testing) to identify specific stressors affecting the body’s meridians, e.g. negative thoughts, environment, food allergens, sensory stimulation, etc. HK uses sustained touch on acupuncture and other points to bring the flow of energy in the body’s meridians (energy channels) into balance. If the kidney or bladder meridians are adversely affected, then having them checked by an HK practitioner could help determine the underlying cause of the symptoms. There are types of food that can support healthy bladder and kidneys, including broccoli, celery, cranberries, cucumbers, leafy greens, dandelion, seaweed vegetables, burdock root and horsetail tea. Both the kidney and bladder meridians are used in acupuncture to treat lower back pain as well as menstrual complaints, fatigue and other conditions. Using a ginger compress over the kidneys is one way to help strengthen them. This also helps with muscle tension, kidney stones, kidney inflammation, prostate infection or bladder inflammation. Discontinue the compress if the pain worsens during this treatment.

How to Make a Ginger Compress

• Four to five ounces of grated ginger • One gallon of boiling water Put grated ginger in a cheesecloth bag and place in simmering water. Simmer for five minutes. (Be careful not to continue boiling the water as that destroys the benefits of the ginger.) Soak a cotton towel in the ginger water and apply to lower back while lying on your stomach. The compress should be as hot as tolerable. To help keep the heat in the soaked cloth, cover it with another towel or two. Apply new compresses as needed to keep the heat in, allowing them to remain on for 20 to 30 minutes. Do not use the ginger compress on a baby, the very elderly or anyone experiencing a high fever. For ongoing lower back pain, seek chiropractic care or consult your healthcare provider. There may be a pinched nerve affecting the muscles or organs or other more serious condition requiring further investigation by a trained healthcare practitioner. Cannabis as a Healing Therapy by Amber Lanier Nagle

ustin Sulak, D.O., opened a private osteopathic manipulation, hypnotherapy and integrative medicine practice in Hallowell, Maine, in 2009, the same year the state’s voters expanded its medical cannabis law. At that time, he was one of the few physicians in Maine willing to certify patients to use cannabis legally. As of this writing, 33 states now allow medical marijuana, and 10 of them allow its recreational use. Cannabis initiatives continue to find their way onto state ballots with each election cycle.

Today, Sulak’s practice serves thousands of patients that use cannabis for authorized medical purposes. He educates medical professionals and patients on its safe, clinical use, while continuing to explore its therapeutic potential. Visit Healer.com to learn more.

What led you to become a national advocate for the therapeutic potential of medicinal cannabis?

After trying cannabis in my teens, I realized what I had been told about the herb was not true, and I began thinking more critically about mainstream and natural approaches to health. Cannabis helped me make deeper connections with people, nature, music and spirituality. In college, I worked with social and political activists to learn and spread the truth about cannabis— that it’s a plant that has been used by humankind for thousands of years; that it has the potential to address many of our healthcare and environmental problems; that it’s been a victim of propaganda; and that it’s safe for most people. Then, as a first-year medical student, I attended a conference lecture on the endocannabinoid system, a powerful physiological system our bodies use to stay healthy and respond to illness and injuries, and I saw the incredible therapeutic potential of cannabis in a new light.

NAtwincities.com

It’s a plant that has been used by humankind for thousands of years. Today, there’s enormous evidence, including a 2017 report from the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, concluding that cannabis can be a safe and effective medicine for treating many conditions.

Which conditions are your patients using medical cannabis for?

My two offices in Maine currently follow approximately 8,000 patients who use medical cannabis, and of those, about 70 percent suffer from chronic pain, many of whom are able to eliminate or decrease their dependence on opioids. Post-traumatic stress disorder is the next most common diagnosis we treat with cannabis, with excellent results where other medications fail. Medical cannabis is like a magnet for conditions that fail to respond to conventional medical approaches, including cancer, multiple sclerosis, dementia, Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, epilepsy, movement disorders, tick-borne disease, brain and spinal cord injuries and more.

How do you address concerns that cannabis is a gateway drug and can become addictive?

Research proves that medical cannabis actually serves as an exit drug, not a gateway drug. One study of 350 medical cannabis users in California found 40 percent of the subjects used cannabis as a substitute for alcohol, 26 percent as a substitute for illicit drugs, and 66 percent as a substitute for prescription drugs. Any time a person can replace a harmful substance with a safer substance like cannabis, it’s a step in the right direction. Cannabis dependence does exist, but is uncommon. One study published in the journal Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology found that only 9 percent of those who try cannabis illicitly develop dependence, compared to 24 percent of those who try heroin. Cannabis withdrawal is mild and

similar in intensity to caffeine withdrawal, and most people don’t have any trouble stopping using cannabis, when and if they need to.

Are there any side effects?

The common adverse effects of cannabis are mild, especially when compared to other drugs. A 2008 review found that in 23 randomized controlled trials, there was no higher incidence of serious adverse events following medical cannabis use compared with control. Dizziness was the most common non-serious adverse effect. Other common adverse effects include euphoria, altered consciousness, acute panic or paranoid reaction; altered motivation; impaired attention, memory and psychomotor performance; tachycardia; orthostatic hypotension; dry mouth; and increased appetite.

If someone lives in a state that has legalized medicinal cannabis and thinks it may help a disease or condition, what should be their first step?

The ideal first step is to find a medical provider with experience in the medical cannabis field. The Society of Cannabis Clinicians (CannabisClinicians.org) is a good resource. Amber Lanier Nagle is a freelance writer based in Northwest Georgia. Connect at AmberNagle.com.

It’s never too late to change your life.

Children with ASD frequently experience gut issues such as constipation or diarrhea; a review from the International Society for Autism Research indicated that nearly 47 percent of autistic children exhibited at least one gastrointestinal (GI) symptom. And, the more severe a child’s GI symptoms, the more severe the autism, according to a study in BMC Gastroenterology. Not coincidentally, research is finding that these digestive conditions and the accompanying ASD may be connected to the gut microbiome, an ecosystem of trillions of microbes living in the digestive tract. “Kids with ASD may have inflammation in the brain, and we’ve learned that it can be very much related to inflammation of the gut,” explains Bock. “The gut and immune system—which are intimately connected because the majority of our immune system is in the gut—are two of the most crucial systems involved in autism spectrum disorders.” It turns out that kids with ASD have less bacterial diversity in their guts than non-autistic kids, along with an imbalance between good and bad bacteria. This dysbiosis of the gut flora leads to problems with improper immune function, inflammation and a leaky gut barrier. It all comes down to the gut-brain axis, by which the gut and brain communicate with each other. When the microbiome isn’t balanced, not only is this vital communication system broken, but toxins and pro-inflammatory molecules that trigger ASD-like behaviors can cross the blood-brain barrier.

AUTISM’S GUT-BRAIN AXIS

and how different the restrictions can be for each child. The very nature of the condition lends itself to integrative approaches that can be significantly effective, says Bock. “ASD is really a whole-body disorder that affects the brain, so a whole-body approach makes so much more sense.” From specialized diet and supplement regimens to a variety of alternative therapies, parents have a wealth of complementary options from which to choose. One integrative approach, however, is showing exceptional, research-backed promise: healing the gut.

healthy kids

Experts say prioritizing gut health can relieve both GI issues and ASD symptoms.

Focus on Gut Health for ASD Care

For children with ASD, reinforcing the intestinal barrier and restoring balance to the microbiome can have profound health effects. “With dysbiosis and an overly permeable gut, inflammatory molecules can leak into the circulatory system, travel up to the brain and cross the blood-brain barrier, causing inflammation. A lot of it originates in the gut, so when we treat the gut, we can restore microbial balance, diversity and resilience to the ecosystem—and in doing so, decrease inflammation, help restore the appropriate blood-brain barrier and bring the brain back into more of a balance,” advises Bock. Before embarking on a treatment plan, Bock emphasizes the importance of working with a qualified healthcare practitioner to determine where a child fits in terms of subtypes of ASD, along with any other individual contributing factors. Although autism spectrum disorder is complex, using holistic strategies that address the whole body can make all the difference. “I see thousands of kids on the spectrum, and the

vast majority of them improve with an integrative approach to treatment, and more and more kids are actually recovering,” notes Bock. Emily Courtney is a freelance health and wellness writer and editor living in northern Colorado. Connect at EmilyCourtneyWrites@ gmail.com.

A MINNESOTAN’S GUIDE TO SAFE SHOVELING by Amanda Haeg

W

ith plenty of snow yet ahead in 2019, Minnesotans must balance the beautiful seasonal landscape with the inevitable shoveling of snow. Clearing sidewalks and driveways of snow can often require a lot of time and effort. While shoveling can be a great workout, heading out to clear snow without proper preparation, equipment or biomechanics can lead to injury. According to a 2007 study in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine that evaluated shovel-related injuries and emergencies in the U.S., the most common mechanism of injury (53.9 percent) was due to acute musculoskeletal exertion (a.k.a. exercise injury) and the second most common mechanism of injury (20 percent) was due to slips and falls. Here are some tips to help stay safe while shoveling this winter. Preparation. One of the best ways to prevent a shoveling incident is to start with the proper equipment: • Shovel – The ideal shovel should stand about chest high. This will allow for a straight back while shoveling and prevent excess stress and strain on the lower back. Wider shovels are best used for pushing snow while narrow shovels will keep loads more manageable when carrying snow. • Salt – When there is a winter storm on the way, lay plenty of salt along walkways to prevent icy patches that could cause trouble while shoveling. Slick spots increase the chance of a slip and fall that may lead to more serious injuries. • Warm up – Prepare to take on the snow by stretching, going for a short walk or marching in place to warm up. This is particularly important when shoveling first thing in the morning when joints tend to be stiffer and temperatures cooler. • Bundle up – Wear plenty of layers when heading outside to protect from frostbite and keep muscles warm and flexible. Execution. Utilizing proper biomechanics will allow for both efficient and safe shoveling this winter: • Start early – The best time to begin shoveling is before snow has had a chance to pile up. Shoveling a few inches of snow at a time will prevent heavy loads by avoiding dense, compacted snow. If multiple inches have piled up, try skimming the top few inches off first then working down through the snow in layers.

• Push – Push snow as far as possible before scooping. This will not only decrease stress and strain on the spine, it will also reduce occurrence of throwing heavy scoops of snow that could lead to injury. • Lifting – The best form for lifting snow involves maintaining a straight back and bending with the knees. While scooping snow, have one hand on the handle and the other near the scoop; start with one leg in front of the other, bend at the knees, scoop, and then stand. Avoid any twist of the torso by walking snow to pile it up rather than throwing it. Alternating which foot is forward for lifting snow will help maintain a more balanced workout. • Breathe – Improper breathing while shoveling can create excess tension throughout the body. To maintain adequate amounts of oxygen and blood flowing, go slow and take breaks when needed. Secret Weapon. Regular chiropractic care helps to maintain proper motion throughout the spine. Ensuring adequate motion of each of the spinal bones will avoid excess stress and strain that could lead to future injuries. If a shoveling injury does occur, be sure to stop in to see a chiropractor sooner rather than later to ensure proper correction. Remember, not everyone is physically fit enough for shoveling. Individuals should consult their primary care physician prior to shoveling snow. Stop shoveling if you experience symptoms such as lightheadedness, dizziness, shortness of breath or tightness in chest, neck, arms or back, and call 911. Dr. Amanda Haeg, a Minnesota native, grew up active in multiple sports. After a sports injury left her barely able to walk and chiropractic care allowed her body to heal, she realized chiropractic was how she was meant to serve others. She is now the owner of Cadence Chiropractic, in Eden Prairie, where she utilizes objective technology specialized in the movement of the spine. She strives to correct the structure and function of the spine to help children and families get well and stay well. For more information, visit CadenceChiroMN.com.

5G

TECHNOLOGY MEETS A BIG OBSTACLE Health Impacts by Patti and Doug Wood

I

n neighborhoods across the country, telecom crews are busy installing new wireless antennas on telephone poles and lamp posts in anticipation of the next generation of communication technology, known as 5G. There’s a lot of hype about how this new technology will change our lives, and it certainly may, but not necessarily in the way we want or expect. First some background: 5G uses the existing 3G and 4G networks and adds a new layer of radiofrequency (RF) microwave radiation to transmit large amounts of data. It’s much faster and more powerful than the existing networks, but it only works over short distances. As a result, the rollout of 5G will require a vast network of millions of new antennas installed in close proximity to homes and apartments. But is constant exposure to RF microwave radiation from wireless antennas safe?

Research Proves Danger

Researchers and cell phone companies have known for years that RF microwave radiation can cause serious health problems, and a recent study by the National Toxicology Program of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) confirmed that prolonged exposure to microwave radiation can cause oxidative stress that can lead to cancer. A 2018 study of exposure to radiation from cell towers, conducted by the renowned Ramazzini Institute, in Italy, showed similar biological effects. This and the NIH study build on a large and growing body of published, peer-reviewed, independent (non industry-funded) studies showing biological harm from RF microwave radiation. For years, the wireless industry has downplayed the potential health effects of exposure to this type of radiation, casting doubt on the research (and researchers) and promoting the false narrative that there is no credible science linking exposure with health effects. While science is slow, and it is very difficult to draw a straight line between a particular exposure and a disease, we have sufficient evidence to be extremely careful around RF microwave radiation. That’s why many people are raising questions about the wisdom of installing these powerful 5G antennas so close to our homes.

According to the EPA, 65% of our buildings are 10x more polluted than outdoor city air. Healthy Eating

No Way to Escape

While cell phone users have the option to use a headset, a speakerphone or a car phone, or not to use a cell phone at all if they choose, no such option exists for people who live in close proximity to a 5G wireless antenna. It will be emitting powerful microwave radiation 24/7, every day, week after week, year after year, whether the nearby residents use the service or not. There is no way to escape. So do the benefits of 5G outweigh these risks? According to the wireless industry, 5G will facilitate the Internet of Things (IoT), improve the accuracy of driverless cars and help with national security in some unspecified way. While some people may feel that it’s critical to have their toaster talk to their refrigerator, or to have a driverless car navigate its way to their home, it’s hard to argue that these things constitute a necessary public service. The fact is, 5G is not required in residential areas for national security or public safety. It is not needed to improve cell phone service and will not close the digital or the rural divide. However, it will put certain populations at higher risk for health problems, including unborn children and young children, those with implanted medical devices, the elderly, people with hypersensitivity to RF microwave radiation and anyone with a compromised immune system. In other words, a lot of people.

A Federal Issue

Unfortunately, there is little your local government can do to stop the rollout of 5G. This is a federal issue, and while local governments have limited flexibility on the placement of antennas, only the federal government can stop the industry-funded race to roll out 5G. Citizen groups opposing the wireless build-out are sprouting up wherever 5G antennas are being installed, and many of them have joined together as Americans for Responsible Technology. The organization has also established a website for political action, TelecomPowerGrab.org. Most Americans recognize freedom of choice as a fundamental value in our society. No one has the right to force American citizens to endure involuntary exposure to harmful radiation in their own homes. How this issue will be resolved over the next few years remains to be seen. Patti and Doug Wood are the founders and directors of Grassroots Environmental Education, a nonprofit environmental health organization based in Port Washington, NY.
