2016 TRACK AND FIELD
SEASON PREVIEW With another indoor track and field season quickly approaching, it is time to rundown the 2016 roster and take a look at what this season’s squad has to offer. Coming off four-straight indoor and outdoor Big Sky Conference Championships, eight-consecutive overall, the Northern Arizona University men’s track and field team is prepared for another title defense in 2016. The men’s side will look to make a run at their fifth-straight indoor conference championship starting with the Lumberjack Team Challenge Saturday, Jan. 16. The Lumberjack track and field women are gearing up for another successful season as well, looking to improve on third and fourth place finishes at indoor and outdoor conference championships last year. With 10 athletes returning for both the throwing and distance teams, the women look to be in good shape heading into the season-opening indoor meet. As mentioned above, NAU will begin its team season tomorrow with the Lumberjack Team Challenge and continue the indoor campaign hosting four more events throughout January and February. The Lumberjacks will then head to Bozeman, Mont., for indoor conference championships during the last weekend of February, where Montana State will play host. After a couple weeks off, NAU will start up its outdoor season at the UC Irvine Spring Break Invite on March 18. From there, the Lumberjacks are slated to compete at some highly-anticipated meets like Texas Relays, Stanford Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays before heading into outdoor conference championships in Greely, Colo., hosted by Northern Colorado.
With the schedule laid out, let’s take a look at specifically what the Lumberjacks have coming back this season—in terms of returning athletes—at each unit.

2015 LUMBERJACK CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE SEASON PREVIEW Throws The Lumberjack men bring back three athletes from the throws group in Kyle Brandt, Shawn Collins and Micael Ljungberg. During the 2015 campaign, Collins recorded top-five finishes in the shot put event in 10 of 14 meets, while Ljungberg recorded two golds—one at the Tailwind Open and the other at outdoor conference championships—in the discus throw. Brandt did not compete during the indoor season, but notched a career-best mark in the javelin throw (49.99m) at the Mesa T-Bird Invitational, good enough for second place at the meet. For the NAU women throwers, Brooke Andersen, Julia Viberg and Jessica Weise are the big-name returners to the 2016 roster. During the 2015 indoor and outdoor seasons, Andersen was named Big Sky Athlete of the Week three times while earning Big Sky’s Most Outstanding Women’s Performer at outdoor conference for her first-place performance in the hammer throw. Her mark at that event, 63.30m, was a career-best for Andersen and ranked third all-time in NAU’s outdoor hammer throw record books. Viberg and Weise experienced similar success, with Viberg setting a personal record in the discus throw at Texas Relays, 57.07m, and winning her third-straight discus title at outdoor conference in May. Viberg also qualified for nationals in the discus throw for the second straight season. Weise was equally just as impressive, being named Big Sky Athlete of the Week once during the indoor season and securing first-place in the shot put event during indoor conference championships. Both athletes also earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors.

SEASON PREVIEW
Hoover is only eligible to compete during the outdoor season in 2016, but put together a good 2015 indoor campaign. In four meets, Hoover recorded a career-best time in the 5000m run—13:58.03—at the Hoosier Open and tallied a first-place victory in the 3000m run at the Lumberjack Team Challenge. For the women, Kayla Freeman, Caroline Hoegardh and Melanie Townsend will lead the way for the distance team in 2016.

SEASON REVIEW HISTORY
Ziensellassie continued to add to his long and impressive NAU resume last year, earning a first-place mark in the 5000m run during indoor conference championships en route to being named MVP at the meet. Because of his performance, Zienasellassie earned all-conference honors for the third time in his career. The Indiana native also set a personal record in the 5000m race at the Payton Jordan Invitational, 13:49.34, and qualified for nationals in the 10,000m. This season, Zienasellassie competed at the Hoosier Open and already recorded a conference-qualifying time in the 5000m event with a 13:44.89 mark.
Last season, Freeman set three career-best marks in the 1500m, 3000m and 5000m runs, while earning all-Big Sky recognition for her third-place finish in the 5000m at outdoor conference. This season, Freeman has already hit a conference qualifying mark in the 5000m event with her 16:48.29 time at the Hoosier Open in December. Hoegardh also set two new career-best marks in 2015, in the mile and 3000m runs, while recording first-place victories in the mile run at Mountain T’s and 3000m steeplechase at the UC Irvine Invite. Townsend, to her credit, secured three individual victories of her own in the 3000m, 5000m and 10,000m runs and set personal records in the 3000m (10:03.14) and 10,000m (35:43.48), with the last mark coming at outdoor conference championships.

2015 LUMBERJACK CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE SEASON PREVIEW Sprints The sprinters will have plenty of fresh faces on this year’s roster, but some mainstays return for the 2016 campaign. For the men, James Fisher will look to make a large impact this season while Nicole Fotinos and Ashley Taylor lead the way on the women’s side. Fisher is coming off his best season to date, notching nine total first-place victories—seven individual and two team—in 2015 and setting two personal-bests in the 200m (21.10) and 100m (10.49). Fotinos set three new career marks in 2015 as the junior from Tucson, Ariz., was part of a first-place 4x4 team at Mountain T’s and earned an individual victory of her own in the 400m at the NAU Tune-Up. In 20 different events in 2014, Taylor—who redshirted both indoor and outdoor in 2015—recorded top-five finishes in 10 of those events, including three first-place victories, two of which occurred at outdoor conference championships. With her performance at outdoor conference championships, Taylor secured a bid to the NCAA Prelims.

ERIC HEINS DIRECTOR OF TRACK AND FIELD/CROSS COUNTRY NINTH SEASON - CINCINATTI '99
Eric Heins enters his ninth season as the head coach at Northern Arizona University and fifth as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country. He has won 26 Big Sky Championships and produced eight top-10 national finishes in his first eight seasons at NAU. In his eight years since returning to Flagstaff, Heins has been named Coach of the Year by the Big Sky Conference 24 times, including four such titles during last season’s cross country and track and field campaigns. In 2014, Heins guided the men’s cross country team to its eighth-straight Big Sky Conference Championship, while also helping the women’s squad secure its second conference title in the last six seasons. The men’s team went on to compete at the NCAA Championships, where they earned a fourth-place finish thanks in part to junior Futsum Zienasellassie’s individual performance. Zienasellassie’s third-place finish in 2014 was the third time in the Heins era that a cross country member placed in the top-three at nationals. That momentum carried over into the 2015 track and field season, where Heins led the Lumberjack men to indoor and outdoor conference titles, marking the fifth-straight triple crown for the NAU men and the seventh overall in school history. Under his direction, Heins also saw the women’s team notch a third place finish at the indoor championships and a fourth place finish at the outdoor championships. The 2014 track and field season was also one to remember, as Heins watched both squads win the Big Sky Indoor and Outdoor Conference Championships under his leadership. The outdoor championship was won in Flagstaff, marking the first time the Lumberjack women have won the outdoor championship since 2006. The 2013 cross county teams continued to flourish during the Heins era, as the men’s team secured its seventh-consecutive Big Sky Championship, and ninth-consecutive individual title. The Lumberjack men also finished the season ranked second in the country, thanks in part to All-American performances by Brian Shrader, Matt McElroy and Zienasellassie.
CROSS COUNTRY
The track and field teams experienced much of the same success in 2013 with Heins at the helm. During that season, the NAU men’s team secured another conference title, cranking out 143.5 mark at the indoor championship and recording a 143 score at the outdoor meet. Heins’ men’s mid-distance group also took home a total of six individual Big Sky titles during the 2013 track and field campaign. The women’s track and field teams finished third at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships and sixth at the indoor meet during the 2013 season. Under Heins, the cross country program has finished in the top-10 eight times at the NCAA Championships with 11 athletes earning cross country All-American accolades Academically, the cross country teams have received the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award five times under Heins’ direction, while his student-athletes from both cross country and track and field have earned a combined 463 Big Sky All-Academic honors since 2007. Former NAU cross country and track and field star David McNeill was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team in 2009 and 2010, while also being named the 2010 Track and Field Division I Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Heins has also had two student-athletes earn academic All-American honors, while Lopez Lomong became Heins’ first athlete to be inducted into the NAU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013. Before Being Named NAU’s Head Coach From 2001-03, Heins served as an assistant for the Lumberjacks under then-Head Coach Ron Mann. During his first tenure, the men’s team finished as high as fourth place at the NCAA Championships, while the women took home a 10th place finish. From there, Heins went to Southeast Missouri State, where he spent three years coaching the Redhawks to six different Ohio Valley Conference Championships. Heins returned to NAU as a head coach after serving as an assistant during the 2006-07 season at Texas Christian University. In his only season with the TCU Horned Frogs,

He earned his bachelor’s degree in health promotion and education. At the 1997 Indoor Conference USA Championships, he achieved his highest individual accomplishment by placing third in the 3,000m. He also notched top-10 finishes in both the indoor and outdoor 5,000m, as well as the outdoor 10,000m. In 2001, Heins earned a master’s in kinesiology from Indiana University. In November 2007, he competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon in New York, N.Y. 2015 LUMBERJACK CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE MEET THE COACHING STAFF
KENNY MCDANIEL ASSISTANT COACH - SPRINTS & HURDLES FOURTH SEASON - PITT STATE '99
Kenny McDaniel enters his fourth season as an assistant track and field coach at Northern Arizona University. McDaniel works with the men’s and women’s sprinters and hurdlers, bringing his energetic and passionate approach to the Lumberjack student-athletes. Northern Arizona (2011-present) During his time with NAU, McDaniel has coached his sprinters to a combined six gold medals in the indoor and outdoor seasons. On the men’s side, McDaniel has helped sprinter Vernon Jamison win both indoor conference hurdle titles, while cutting his times in both events. McDaniel has led Darriel Banks to an indoor conference title and career-best time in the 60m hurdle, while directing Shamelle Pless to a career- and school-record time in the 200m dash. The 4x400m relay squad has improved dramatically with McDaniel coaching as well, securing the gold medal at indoor conference and the bronze medal at outdoor conference with an excellent 3:09 mark last spring. McDaniel has continued his career as a Lumberjack in impressive fashion. McDaniel coached sprinter Miles di Sabella to an outdoor conference title in the 200m, while guiding Banks to the first round of NCAA Championships with her times in the 100m and 200m. Isatu Fofanah and Pless have also significantly bettered their times in 100m and 200m during their time as Lumberjacks. Arizona State (2006-2011) In his five years with the Sun Devil program, McDaniel’s women’s sprint, hurdle and relay student-athletes improved under his direction while consistently challenging for conference and national titles. Overall, he coached 12 women to a combined 43 All-American honors, including two-time NCAA Champion Jacquelyn Johnson. She won the NCAA title in the pentathlon and heptathlon in 2008 before competing in the Beijing Olympics. McDaniel also coached athletes like Jasmine Chaney and Charonda Williams while at ASU. Under McDaniel, Chaney recorded a personal best in the 400m indoor hurdles and a berth in the 2012 Olympic Trials. Chaney eventually earned

a spot on Team USA for the IAAF World Championships in the 400m hurdles while breaking a 16 year-old school record in the process. She is now a professional athlete. Williams had similar success, earning a spot on Team USA for the IAAF World Championships in Berlin after breaking numerous school records during the collegiate season before. With McDaniel, Williams lowered her time in the 100m from 11.61 to 11.14 and also dropped her 200m time from 23.62 to a windy 22.39 to reset the school records that had stood for over 13 years. She now runs professionally for Adidas. Cal State Fullerton, San Francisco State and Pittsburg State (1996-2006) Prior to his arrival in Tempe, McDaniel spent three seasons coaching the men’s and women’s sprints, hurdles and relays at Cal State Fullerton and guided six individuals, three men and three women, and one women’s relay to Big West titles. His athletes also set 14 total school records. McDaniel’s first coaching job came in 2000 when he was hired to coach the men’s and women’s sprints, hurdles and relays at San Francisco State. While with the Gators, his student-athletes accounted for three school records while a pair of sprinters qualified in the 100m and 200m dash at the NCAA Division II Championships. His student-athletes also garnered 10 total All-CCAA honors. Before taking his position at SFSU, McDaniel served as a student assistant coach at his alma mater, Pittsburgh State University, in Pittsburgh, Kan. A 1999 graduate with a degree in general studies with an emphasis in kinesiology and nutrition, McDaniel ran for the Gorillas for two years. There, he earned All-MIAA accolades in the indoor 55m hurdles, the outdoor 110m high-hurdles and the outdoor 400m hurdles. LEAH ROSENFELD ASSISTANT COACH - WOMEN'S DISTANCE THIRD SEASON - PENN STATE '10
Leah Rosenfeld enters her third year at Northern Arizona and her second as an assistant coach with the Lumberjacks. The former Penn State student-athlete focuses primarily on the women’s distance program. She also assists in recruiting, coordinating team travel, and managing the team blog and newsletter. In her second season at NAU, Rosenfeld helped coach both cross country teams to Big Sky Conference titles as the women secured a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Mountain Regionals. Under her leadership, Rosenfeld saw Melanie Townsend and Kayla Freeman emerge as Big Sky All-Conference runners, while guiding the Lumberjack women to their first conference title in five seasons. Rosenfeld was also instrumental in helping to develop both the women’s and men’s teams during the 2012-13 season. The women’s team improved dramatically and the men’s team won the Big Sky Conference championship and finished the season ranked fourth in the nation. Before arriving at NAU, Rosenfeld worked as an assistant coach at Lodi High School in Lodi, Calif. There, she helped design workouts and racing schedules, as well as circuit training and drill routines. Rosenfeld was also influential in getting student-athletes recruited to Division I universities. During the 2010 cross country season, Rosenfeld coached the women’s team to their eighth-straight League Championship and individual champion in Cassidy Daley. In February 2011, Rosenfeld helped Daley to run at the USA Cross Country Championships and Junior Olympics, where she placed 11th and earned All-American honors. Prior to her coaching stint at Lodi High School, Rosenfeld worked with the cross country and track and field teams at Syracuse University as a volunteer assistant coach. In 2011, both the Syracuse men’s and women’s cross country teams won the Northeast Region Championship and competed in the NCAA Championships, where they finished 15th and 17th, respectively. Under the guidance of coaches
CROSS COUNTRY

Chris Fox and Brian Bell, Rosenfeld helped with recruiting and facilitating workouts for specific distance and middle distance groups. She also collaborated with Syracuse’s academic coordinators to ensure athletes’ compliance with NCAA academic requirements. Rosenfeld, a Ridgefield, Conn. native, participated in cross country and indoor and outdoor track for Penn State University from 2006-10. During her collegiate career at PSU, Leah received All-Region cross country honors; scored points in both the one run mile at the Indoor Big Ten Championships and the 5,000 meter run at the Outdoor Big Ten Championships; earned medalist honors at the Iona Meet of Champions and led her team to a first-place finish her junior year; and nabbed a regional qualifier spot in the 1,500 meter run with a personal best time of 4:24.62 in the prelims her junior year. That mark placed Rosenfeld on Penn State’s Top 10 all-time 1,500 meter record board. Rosenfeld was also a member of the 4x1500 meter relay at Penn Relays, setting a school record time of 17:57.28. In addition to running, Rosenfeld was heavily involved in the student-athlete services at PSU. She was the Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) representative for the cross country and track and field teams her junior and senior years and demonstrated great leadership as the Fundraising Chair for SAAB, managing 800 PSU varsity student-athletes. Rosenfeld graduated from PSU in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in communication with a concentration in media studies and kinesiology. She recently completed her master’s degree in educational leadership here at NAU in December of 2014.

NATHAN OTT ASSISTANT COACH - THROWS SECOND SEASON - SOUTHERN UTAH '06
Nathan Ott enters his second season at Northern Arizona as an assistant coach for throws. Ott joined the Lumberjacks after a season as the throws coach for Texas State and six seasons at his alma mater, Southern Utah. At Texas State, Ott coached one national qualifier, four west preliminary qualifiers and eight Sunbelt Conference Champions. He also had athletes break records in the men’s indoor and outdoor shot put, weight throw and hammer throw – which was set and reset by two different athletes – and the women’s weight throw. At Southern Utah, Ott coached 19 conference champions, 11 NCAA Regional qualifiers and one All-American. Under his tenure, the Thunderbird throwers broke 13 school records, posted 142 top 10 marks and boasted three team MVPs. In 2013, Ott coached Kayla Kovar to an indoor Big Sky Championship in the shot put and a Most Outstanding Performer honor. In total, Kovar notched six conference championships under Ott’s coaching. She also holds school records in the indoor and outdoor shot put, weight throw, discus and is second all-time in the hammer throw. As a student-athlete at Southern Utah, Ott set the school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 201-05. Jarred Cornfield is entering his first season as a graduate assistant coach at NAU. Cornfield will specialize in distance running for the cross country team while also assisting Coach Heins and Coach Rosenfeld on a daily basis. Cornfield will also play a key role in recruiting for the cross country program. Previously, Cornfield attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. At Liberty, Cornfield competed in the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championship as a member of the cross country squad, finishing sixth for the Flames. Cornfield also notched a 25:30.4 mark in the 8K and a 32:03 time in the 10K, both personal-bests. Cornfield built an impressive resume as a member of the LU track and field program, as well. In four seasons for the Flames, Cornfield advanced to the Big South Outdoor 1,500 meter final all four years, never finishing outside the top-eight. Cornfield also holds the university’s eighth-fastest mile time (4:15.33) and recorded a 2:25.94 time in the 1,000 meter at the IC4A Championship as a freshman, a mark that stands as the second-best in program history. Cornfield also managed his academics well during his undergraduate career, earning a Big South Presidential Honor Roll nomination his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. Cornfield is originally from Corning, N.Y., and was one of six children growing up. He received his undergraduate degree in sports management at LU and is working toward his master’s degree in educational leadership at NAU. Cornfield on why he chose to become a Lumberjack: “I love NAU because of its strong distance program and its excellent tradition of being one of the premier cross country programs in the country. I get to work with Coach Heins and Coach Rosenfeld who are very good at what they do and provide a great amount of wisdom and insight into the world of collegiate coaching. Also, Flagstaff, Ariz., provides an ideal climate for training and it’s an absolutely beautiful place!”

Welcome to Northern
Arizona University
Northern Arizona University provides an outstanding undergraduate residential education strengthened by important research, graduate and professional programs, and a responsive distance learning network delivering programs throughout Arizona. NAU’s underlying core strength at the undergraduate level is in its ability to provide knowledge of the world, an ability to appreciate change, diversity, and life itself. Faculty and staff members are committed to the residential campus concept and to the student population; however, they are also prepared to deliver education throughout Arizona and the world either online or in new campus structures. The Mountain Campus has a student population of more than 20,000 at its main campus in Flagstaff and at sites across the state. NAU was established in 1899 as the Northern Arizona Normal School. A close, personal interest in the development of each student as an individual has long been a trademark of the Mountain Campus. This educational experience is enhanced by an atmosphere that celebrates the diversity of opinions and cultures. The undergraduate programs at NAU cover a diverse range of disciplines from liberal arts and the sciences to professional and career-related fields. As NAU looks to the future, it continues to develop innovative ways to provide citizens with greater access to education and strives to strengthen its teaching and service partnerships to meet the needs of a changing Arizona. Flagstaff, with a population of about 57,000, is rich in cultural diversity. Located at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is 140 miles north of Phoenix at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40. With its elevation of 7,000 feet and a four-season climate, Flagstaff is ideal for year-round outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include the Grand Canyon, Lowell Observatory, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Monument Valley, Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, and Arizona Snowbowl.
UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT • DR. RITA CHENG Rita Cheng serves as the 16th president of Northern Arizona University. As a first-generation and non-traditional college graduate, Dr. Cheng firmly believes in making higher education accessible and affordable for all students. She has set forth a vision of excellence in education through student-centered teaching, a robust research environment and inclusive support services focused on success measured through retention and graduation rates. Dr. Cheng also is part of the Arizona Board of Regents’ Enterprise Executive Committee, comprised of the presidents of NAU, Arizona State University, the University of Arizona and ABOR as the executive leadership of the Arizona public university enterprise system responsible for driving achievement of statewide goals. At NAU, Dr. Cheng oversees an operating budget of more than $500 million and 4,600 faculty and staff. The university offers more than 200 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs to its 27,000 students. A practical approach to interpersonal relationships and institutional leadership traces its roots to Dr. Cheng’s small-town upbringing in Wisconsin, where her father was a farmer and her mother a schoolteacher. An accountant by training, she leads by relying on values, analyzing data and inviting the input of stakeholders. She also emphasizes shared governance, transparency, communication, accountability and inclusiveness. Dr. Cheng supports a strong, academically focused athletics program, but also champions music, art, theater and other cultural and recreational
activities that contribute to the vibrancy of campus. She also regards campus as an integral part of the local community. Dr. Cheng arrived at NAU in August 2014 from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where she served as chancellor for four years and was a professor of accounting. She previously spent 22 years in teaching and administrative roles at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, including five years as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. A certified public accountant and certified government financial manager, Dr. Cheng is internationally recognized for her research in government and nonprofit accounting. She serves on a variety of local and national boards, including the NCAA Division 1 board of directors. Dr. Cheng earned her Ph.D. in management from the Fox School of Business and Management at Temple University, an MBA degree from the University of Rhode Island and a bachelor of business administration degree with honors from Bishop‘s University in Quebec.

VICE PRESIDENT FOR INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS • DR. LISA CAMPOS In her first two years at NAU, Campos has guided the Lumberjacks to Back-toBack Big Sky Conference Presidents’ Cup trophies recognizing the Department’s overall excellence in competition and in the classroom. In 2013, the Lumberjacks finished first in overall athletic points and tied for second in overall academic performance as they became the fourth institution to win multiple Presidents’ Cups, winning their second Presidents’ Cup (first was 2005-06). NAU claimed the 2014-15 Men’s All-Sports Trophy and was the runner up for the 2014-15 Women’s All-Sports Trophy. NAU also claimed the 2013-14 Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Trophy; the first true sweep by an institution since 2000-01. The Lumberjacks captured five team championships, with an additional eight teams finishing in the top five. The success on and off the field continues, and over the past three years, Campos saw her department capture 81 total conference championships. Most recently during the 2014-15, five teams – men’s and women’s cross country, men’s indoor and outdoor track & field, women’s soccer and women’s golf all captured Big Sky Regular Season or Tournament Championships while women’s swimming & diving won back-to-back Western Athletic Conference Championships. The Lumberjacks brought home 22 first place titles between cross country and track & field in the Big Sky and swimming & diving in the WAC. In addition to championship honors, seven student-athletes earned All-America accolades. In the classroom, the Lumberjacks once again proved that academics is at the forefront of the student-athlete experience as NAU finished with a department-wide 3.13 cumulative GPA. Ten of 13 teams finished the 2014-15 academic year with a GPA of at least 3.00 led by the swimming and diving team, who recorded a 3.53 GPA, followed by women’s tennis and soccer. Two student-athletes received CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District honors, one of which was named a CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American First Team honoree. NAU had 139 total student-athletes earn All-Academic honors by the Big Sky and WAC. A total of 58 student-athletes earned their degrees during the 2013-14 academic year. All 15 sponsored sports exceeded NCAA academic standards for the sixth consecutive year as the department posted an overall APR of 970. Twelve squads carried multi-year totals above 960, while six teams accomplished perfect single-year scores of 1000 led by the women’s tennis team who received the APR Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for earning a perfect single-year APR each of the last four years. Campos and the Lumberjacks continue to give back to the community as her student-athletes completed the most community service hours ever in department history. The Lumberjacks’ set a goal of 4,500 hours for the 2014-15 academic year – they eclipsed the mark with an instrumental 5,327 hours. Dr. Campos currently sits on the prestigious NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee, a subcommittee of the new governance model. She also sits on the Board of Directors at NACWAA and for our local United Way of Northern Arizona. Campos made four coaching hires, changing the culture of NAU basketball with the hires of Jack Murphy from the University of Memphis to lead the Lumberjack men’s team and Sue Darling from the University of Arizona to head the women’s squad. In her second year, she hired two coaches away from Conference USA. Ken Murphy from the University of Texas-El Paso was named to guide the volleyball program, and, from Southern Mississippi, Ki Kroll was hired to lead the men’s tennis program. Campos took over the leadership of the Lumberjack Athletics department after serving as the Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of Texas at El Paso since August of 2006. With her hiring at NAU, Campos, 35, became one of 26 females and the youngest in the country to lead a Division I program, including 13 head athletic administrators at the Football Championship Subdivision level. Campos served as the sport administrator for the Miner men’s and women’s cross country, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s track and field programs at UTEP. Campos also was the primary administrator for compliance, CHAMPS/Life Skills,
strength and conditioning, sports medicine, and cheerleading. She was the advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and served as the liaison to the Intercollegiate Athletic Council, Office of Student Life, Miner Village, and the UTEP Police Department. In her tenure at UTEP, she also had oversight of the women’s golf, rifle, and softball programs, served as championship director for numerous conference championships, and co-hosted a weekly television show, Miner Sports Weekly. Dr. Campos also assisted with athletic facility enhancements and co-directed the planning and design of the $2.6 million Helen of Troy Softball Complex, which opened in September 2005. In 2006, Campos served as the NCAA liaison for the Self Study Report for NCAA Certification and continued to oversee all gender, minority equity, and student welfare strategic plans. She was responsible for Title IX staff education and staff diversity training. In 2005, she created the Athletics Diversity Graduate Assistantship Program and served on the UTEP Women’s Resource Advisory Board. She was promoted to the Senior Associate position after serving as the Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator since August of 2003. She also served two years as the Assistant Dean of Students within the UTEP Division of Student Affairs. Dr. Campos had the opportunity to serve on a number of NCAA Committees, including the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, the NCAA Rifle Committee, and chaired the NCAA Women’s Soccer Committee. She was a member of the Conference USA Joint Group and served on the Senior Woman Administrator administrative group. In 2005-2006, when UTEP joined Conference USA, she served on the Conference USA Strategic Planning Committee and assisted in the development of the realigned Conference USA’s vision, core values, mission, and strategic objectives. She also represented UTEP on conference committees, including the budget subcommittee, legislative committee, championships selection committee, and various sport committees. Dr. Campos previously served as the Assistant Dean of Students at UTEP from 2001-03. Campos coordinated and administered the university’s student discipline system, interpreted the University of Texas System Regents’ Rules and Regulations governing the student academic honesty and conduct code, and provided information to the university community on discipline policies, rules, regulations, and procedures. She served as a mentor to an undergraduate student participating in the NASPA Minority Undergraduate Fellows Program and served on a variety of campus committees including the UTEP President’s Advisory Committee on Women, Student Affairs Staff Development Committee, Faculty Senate Student Conduct Committee, and the University Health Awareness Committee. In the community, Campos was a member of the Girl Scouts of the Rio Grande board and the Junior League of El Paso.
