Academics
Academics in the athletics department are of utmost importance at Northern Arizona University. The academic services are under the direction of assistant athletics director for academics Pam Lowie and offer numerous programs to help the student-athletes throughout their academic careers.
The results have been impressive, as NAU student-athletes acheived a cumulative GPA of 3.15 during the spring semester of 2012, which was the 28th semester with a cumulative GPA above 3.0 in the last 15 years (30 semesters). During the 2011-12 academic year, the Lumberjacks garnered 174 Golden Eagle Scholar-Athlete Awards. Forty-eight student-athletes graduated in spring 2012, which was the second largest graduating class in the history of the athletics department only behind the spring 2011 graduating class. In all, 67 student-athletes graduated during the 2011-12 year. The soccer team had 10 spring graduates, which tied for the most in the department with the men’s cross country/track and field programs.

MISSION NAU’s Athletic Academic Services department strives to provide quality academic services that will enhance the student-athletes’ total educational experience and encourage graduation within four years. Lumberjack Academics has the following programs in place for student-athletes: PROACTIVE MENTORING Each year approximately 30-50 first year student-athletes will be selected to participate in NAU’s ProActive Mentor program which targets students who Lumberjack Academics believes may bene-
6
fit from academic mentoring. Student-athletes are selected based on incoming GPA’s/ test scores and coaches recommendations. Student-athletes are expected to attend a weekly meeting with their assigned academic graduate assistant as well as with their respective coach, and to report on their progress in each class. STUDY HALL First year student-athletes (including transfer student-athletes) are required to complete 6-8 hours of study time beginning with the second week of classes through Reading Week. The 6-8 hours consist of scheduled times a monitor will be available and may also include tutoring by the Learning Assistance Centers, organized study groups facilitated by tutors, graduate assistants or faculty from the academic colleges and other academic-related activities that are approved by the Athletics Academic Department Staff. ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT All first year freshman student-athletes are assigned to an academic advisor at the Gateway Student Success Center (GSSC). After the student-athletes’ first year, they will be assigned to a college advisor if they have declared a major while those who are undecided will remain assigned to a GSSC advisor. Student-athletes must declare a major before entering their 5th semester. Academic Coordinators are available for pre-advisement to make sure all NCAA/ NAU policies and procedures are being followed. TUTORING SERVICES Tutoring services for all student-athletes are provided through the North and South Learning Assistance Centers. Student-athletes are given the option to utilize the master schedule which allows them to schedule set tutoring appointments for twice a week per subject throughout the academic semester. Student-athletes may also take advantage of the drop in services and make appointments on an as-needed basis. EARLY ENROLLMENT Student-athletes are afforded the opportunity to participate in priority registration which enables the student-athletes to accommodate practice schedules while continuing to make progress towards graduation. The student-athletes are grouped with seniors and honor students for registration. In order to utilize priority registration, student-athletes must have all holds cleared from their account and meet with their academic advisor for advisement and activation. PROGRESS REPORTS All student-athletes will have progress reports com-
pleted once a semester. Student-athletes who receive a “D” or “F” on a progress report will be required to complete an Action Plan with the faculty for the course in which the “D” or “F” was received.
ATHLETIC DIRECTOR’S HONOR ROLL Student-athletes on a current roster who achieve a 3.5 cumulative GPA qualify for the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. The student-athletes are recognized at a designated spring Men’s Basketball game.

The newly renovated Lumberjack Stadium is a major façade of the $106 million Health and Learning Center (HLC), providing Northern Arizona University with one of the top soccer facilities in the West. Located on the north side of campus, the Lumberjack Stadium location remains rich in history. The covered facility will hold 1,000 fans in chair-back seating to watch home contests for the Northern Arizona women’s soccer program after serving as the main football facility at NAU for 20 years. The Lumberjack soccer program has advanced to two NCAA College Cups since 2008 while winning a combined three Big Sky Conference Championships. They opened the new stadium on Aug. 26, 2011. New lights blanket the field that meets the minimum NCAA dimensions of 65 yards wide by 120 yards long, allowing for highly popular evening matches. There is also a new press box, locker room facilities and coaches’ offices for the team, while HLC provides offices and locker rooms for women’s golf, tennis, track and field and other NAU Athletics staff members. The women’s soccer program christened its home 15 years ago Oct. 24, 1997, with a Big Sky Conference tilt against Cal State Northridge. It was a match to remember, as Danielle Wile of NAU scored in the second overtime session to give the home team a wild 7-6 win. The match still holds NAU re-
cords for most shots in a game, most goals between two teams, and most goals scored (7), a record tied two seasons ago against Lamar. The original stadium, which seated 3,000 fans, began as the home of Lumberjack football in the fall of 1957, with the Lumberjacks opening the facility with a 47-0 win over Ft. Huachuca Army Base. The stadium remained the football home until 1977, when the gridiron program moved into its current home, the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome. During its 20 years in Lumberjack Stadium, the football team carded a 61-33-3 (.644) record. It is also the spring home of the nationally prominent NAU outdoor track and field teams, highlighting a recently resurfaced track. Over the Football Homecoming weekend of 2008, the 1958 Arizona State College (NAU’s former name) football team gathered in Flagstaff for their 50th Anniversary celebration. On the afternoon prior to the game, the playing surface at Lumberjack Stadium, the former home of the football team, was named “Max Spilsbury Field” in a special ceremony in honor of their coach Max Spilsbury. Spilsbury coached at NAU from 1956-64, posting 58 wins over nine seasons. It was a mark that stood for the five decades before current head coach Jerome Souers broke the record in 2008.

Head Coach Andre 12th Season Career record: 84-100-28 2008 and 2009 Big Sky Coach of the Year Indiana, ‘93
Andre Luciano enters his 12th year as Northern Arizona University head women’s soccer coach and will look to lead the Lumberjacks back to the top of the Big Sky Conference after a one-year hiatus from the conference tournament with a youthful and athletic roster in 2012. Luciano possesses a wealth of coaching experience from the intercollegiate level to club soccer coupled with a successful collegiate career at Indiana University that resulted in two conference championships and a NCAA Final Four appearance. Throughout his term, Luciano has shown an ability to master the coaching landscape. Luciano epitomizes the commitment to the student-athlete relationship, and his philosophy has produced success on the field and in the classroom. In 2011, the women’s soccer team had 13 All-Academic Big Sky honorees, second of all fall-Lumberjack teams in 2010, while five players were named to the All-Big Sky conference teams, including graduating seniors Sam Monahan and Jenna Samora who each received their second first team selections of their careers. Over his past eleven years leading the program, Luciano has developed 85 AllBig Sky performers while 104 players have been named to the All-Academic

Big Sky Team, and 196 have earned Golden Eagle Scholar-Athlete Awards for academic and athletic success. Twenty of the 31 players on the roster received the Golden Eagle Award last season. Also in 2011, the Lumberjacks received the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the ninth year in a row, posting an impressive team grade-point-average of 3.39. Last season, Luciano led the Lumberjacks through their most rigorous schedule in program history with road games at powerhouses Arizona State, Missouri, Nebraska, TCU and Texas Tech. With the departure of the 2007 recruiting class nicknamed “The Foundation,” the Lumberjacks missed out on the Big Sky Conference tournament for the first time in four years, finishing the 2011 season just one point out of the top-four with a 3-9-7 overall record and 2-2-3 conference mark. Despite being a very young team featuring eight underclassmen who started at least six games, the Lumberjacks were extremely competitive playing in nine overtime games totaling 17 extra periods and recording a Big Sky record seven ties. In 2010, Luciano guided his squad to their first-ever regular season Big Sky title, but ultimately fell short of their third straight NCAA Women’s College Cup appearance when they were defeated by Sacramento State 1-0 in the Big Sky Conference final. NAU finished the 2010 season with a 12-4-3 overall record and 6-0-1 during the conference regular season, their first unbeaten conference record in program history. The 12 wins matched the school record for wins in a season set in 2008 and their .711 winning percentage set a new school record. The Lumberjacks also posted a school record 12-game unbeaten streak, one shy of the Big Sky mark, and a school and conference record six game shutout streak that covered a span of 569 minutes and 2 seconds. Off the field in 2010, Luciano’s reputation of producing quality student-athletes was at its highest. Kristi Andreassen, the 2010 Big Sky Defensive Most Valuable Player and three-time All-Big Sky first team selection, was selected as the ESPN Academic All-American of the Year in the women’s soccer University divison. She was also named to the CoSIDA/ESPN All-District Academic Team along with senior Brandy Carr, as well as NSCAA Women’s College Scholar All-Americans with senior Tori Howe and junior Tori Rocke. To cap off Andreassen’s illustrious career at NAU, she was selected as the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year at the annual Golden Eagle Awards and the Female Athlete of the Year at the all-sports banquet. In 2009, Luciano led the Lumberjacks to the Big Sky Championship final, where they would defeat Idaho State, 4-0, to advance to their second-consecutive NCAA Tournament and face No. 1 Stanford. NAU finished with a 10-9-2 overall record, including a 4-3 regular season Big Sky record and two wins in the Big Sky Championship to claim the conference title. The Lumberjacks went 6-2-1 at home, and shattered the Lumberjack Stadium attendance record when 2,187 fans witnessed NAU draw with Arizona, 2-2, on August 28. Juniors Andreassen and Rebekah Schmidt were CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine All-District Academic selections with Andreassen going on the earn All-American Academic Honors. In 2008, Luciano led the women’s soccer team to its first Big Sky Conference Championship in the program’s 12th year of Division I competition. As the conference champion, NAU was an automatic qualifier for the 2008 NCAA Women’s College Cup, its first appearance in school history. The women were defeated by No. 2 Portland in the opening round, but went 12-7-3 overall setting a school record for wins in a season (12) and best winning percentage (.614). The Lumberjacks set or tied 16 school and stadium records and broke two Big Sky Conference records for assists in a game (14) and points (32).

In addition, Luciano mentored future Hall of Fame selection Cee Cee Odorfer to Big Sky Co-Offensive Player of the Year honors and her third straight All-Big Sky first team selection. Odorfer broke school records for points in a season (28), career assist (18), and game-winning goals (13). Also in 2008, Luciano tutored freshman Jenna Samora to Big Sky Newcomer of the Year honors. During the 2007 season, goalkeeper Elizabeth Winkelblech received the NSCAA/ adidas Scholar Athlete Award for excellence as a student-athlete. Under Luciano’s guidance, Winkelblech set six combined school records and finished in the top five in seven other statistical categories in her first year as a full-time starter. The Lumberjacks earned the best record in school history to date with a 7-7-5 overall mark, a winning percentage of .500. All five ties were 0-0 finishes which set an NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer record for most 0-0 ties in a single season. NAU opened the year with a 5-2-3 record, the best start to a season through 10 matches in school history.
Luciano
in his first five years with the program and the most wins in program history. NAU went 4-2-0 in conference play, tying Luciano’s best finish in the Big Sky while at NAU prior to the 2008 season in which the Lumberjacks were 4-1-2 in the Big Sky. The women played to a second-place finish at the Big Sky Conference Championships and posted a number of offensive records including most goals, assists and points in a season. The postseason berth marked Luciano’s second appearance in the Big Sky tournament and his first showing in the finals. Also in 2005, Luciano placed 10 athletes on the All-Big Sky All-Conference teams, which was the most in school history at the time and has since been equaled in 2008 and 2010. He added seven more selections to the All-Academic All-Big Sky team. During the 2004 campaign, Luciano earned two impressive non-conference wins against Illinois State (1-0) and Western Illinois (1-0, OT) out of the Missouri Valley Conference and Summit League, respectively. The Lumberjacks finished 5-11-2, but could easily have gained several more victories as three matches went to double overtime. In the 2003 season, the Lumberjacks posted a school-record four consecutive league wins en route to the best conference start in school history. NAU advanced to the Big Sky Championships for the first time since 2000. Under Luciano’s direction, eight players earned All-Big Sky honors in 2003 including the league’s first-ever two time offensive MVP, Sierra Cristiano. In his first two seasons, Luciano led the Lumberjacks to a pair of historic wins. In his inaugural season in 2001, the Lumberjacks upset in-state rival Arizona State 1-0. In 2002, NAU upended Big Sky foe Montana, a feat equaled again in 2003 and 2005. A native of Las Vegas, Nev., Luciano has built the NAU program with a Southwest influence with the majority of the roster from Arizona, Idaho, Nevada and California. Luciano has since expanded his recruiting net to include prep players from Canada, Illinois, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Washington. His 2007 recruiting class received critical acclaim from notable soccer publications. The class became the first in NAU history to be nationally-ranked in the Soccer Buzz Top 100. The 2008 class was equally as strong ranking 33rd in the West Region.
During the 2006 season, Luciano led NAU to a 7-10-1 record finishing sixth in the Big Sky Conference. The Lumberjacks placed nine players on the All-Big Sky All-Conference team, with three student-athletes earning first team honors. Six other Lumberjacks were recognized as All-Big Sky honorable mention. In addition to the brilliant performances on the field by Lumberjacks, Luciano mentored 10 players to All-Big Sky All-Academic recognition. Along with the acknowledgments received from the Big Sky Conference, Luciano placed two players on the NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-West Region Team. Lindsey Carey and Odorfer both posted breakout seasons under Luciano’s wing. Carey totaled a career-high four goals and ranked second on the team in goals scored. Odorfer led NAU in scoring for the second straight year with 15 points on six goals and three assists. The 15 points tied her for sixth in the Big Sky in 2007 for total points. Odorfer ranked in the top ten in shots, goals, and game-winnings goals. In 2005, Luciano directed the Lumberjacks to a 10-11-0 record, their best finish

Big Sky Conference
A new era in the Big Sky Conference begins in 2012-13 as the league enters its 50th year of athletic competition, and its 25th sponsoring women’s collegiate athletics. The Division I Big Sky Conference welcomes the University of North Dakota and Southern Utah University into the fold as full members. Cal Poly and UC Davis join the league as affiliate members in football, where the league competes at the Championship Subdivision level (formerly I-AA). The additions of North Dakota and Southern Utah give the stable Big Sky 11 full institutions and 13 football members. The current lineup includes four of the six charter members: Idaho State University, The University of Montana, Montana State University and Weber State. Northern Arizona enters its 43rd season in the Big Sky, giving the conference five members with at least 40 years of continuous membership. Eastern Washington University joined the Big Sky Conference in 1987, followed by Portland State University and Sacramento State in 1996. The Big Sky became a nine-team league in 2006 with the addition of the University of Northern Colorado. The league has become one of the strongest Division I conferences in the West and is a national leader in the Football Championship Subdivision. Six times, Big Sky teams have won the Division I National Championship, including Eastern Washington in 2010. A Big Sky team has played for the national championship in three of the past four seasons. The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members – Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington. The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Sky back at eight teams. In 1996 Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time the conference added Portland State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years before Cal State Northridge departed in the spring of 2001. The Big Sky now includes nine states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Red River Valley of North Dakota. The league is represented along the entire west coast with institutions in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the six presidents of the charter members as the name of the new conference. The name Big Sky originated in a novel written by the late A.B. (Bud) Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont., in 1947 entitled “The Big Sky.” Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme for the Treasure State. While on a track and field trip from Pocatello, Idaho, to Missoula, Mont., legendary Dubby Holt of Idaho State saw a “Welcome to Big Sky Country” sign as his team entered Montana. Holt, and his athletes thought “Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the new conference. Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his column dated Feb. 20, 1963. The Big Sky sponsors championships in 15 sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball and tennis. In addition, there are also championships in football, and women’s volleyball, golf and soccer. This upcoming spring, the Big Sky will sponsor a softball championship for the first time. In 1988-89, the Big Sky Conference first began sponsoring women’s sports. The former Mountain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring championships for women’s sports at the same institutions the Big Sky had men’s programs. The Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming one league for both men and women. Doug Fullerton, the fifth commissioner of the Big Sky Conference, is in his 18th year at the helm. Fullerton took over the Big Sky on July 1, 1995, replacing longtime commissioner Ron Stephenson, who passed away in 2011. Stephenson served the league for 14 years. Steve Belko was the commissioner from 1977-81, while John Roning held the post from 1971-77. The first league commissioner was Jack Friel, who served from 1963-71.
