2014-15 SEASON COACHING STAFF THE LUMBERJACKS SEASON REVIEW HISTORY
MEDIA POLICY AND PROCEDURES The Athletics Communications office is located in the press box on the west side of the Walkup Skydome. The phone number is (928) 523-6792 or 6330 and the fax number is 523-6793. MEDIA OPPORTUNITY Head coach Andy Johns is available every day before and after practice. Individual athletes may be requested at this time also. Special requests for availability may be made to the athletics communications office. INTERVIEW POLICY All student-athlete interviews must be coordinated through the Athletics Communications office at least one day in advance. No interviews or photo shoots will be conducted on days prior to meets. Outof-town media should contact the Athletics Communications office to make arrangements for phone interviews. Student-athletes are also available for interviews after practice, and, if prior arrangements have been made, before practice. The NAU locker room and training room are closed. JOHNS’ INTERVIEWS Andy Johns and his staff are generally available for interviews before or after each practice. Contact Stayson Isobe in the athletics communications office at 928-5236330 to coordinate all interviews with head coach Andy Johns. PRACTICE Daily workouts are open to both the public and the media unless otherwise noted. Media planning to attend practice should notify the Athletics Communications office in advance to confirm start times and to arrange interviews.

Please contact the athletics communications office if you wish to shoot photos at a practice or event. All media must wear their credentials at all times. Due to space limits, credentials will be issued only to photographers on assignment. Meet programs with lane and heat assignments are available upon request. MEDIA SERVICES Regular services on meet day include results at the conclusion of the meet. A postmeet release, complete with event-by-event results, will be emailed to media outlets following the meet. Those media who wish to receive these results are encouraged to provide their information to the athletics communications office. POSTMEET The NAU locker room is closed on the road and in Wall Aquatic Center. At home, postmeet interviews will be held poolside with requested athletes and coaches from both teams following a short “cooling-off” period. A member of the athletic communications office will collect requests immediately following the conclusion of the meet.
CREDENTIALS Credentials will be issued only to working media on a first-come, first-serve basis, with priority given to daily newspapers and television crews. The pool deck is closed to those not involved in meet coverage. Credentials may be requested for the season or on a per-meet basis. All requests should be submitted to the Athletics Communications office no later than two days prior to each home meet. Requests on official letterhead may be faxed to (928) 523-6793. Credentials may be picked up from a member of the athletics communications office. No credentials will be mailed

MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME Arizona does not move its clock ahead in the spring or back in the fall. As a result, Flagstaff time coincides with the Pacific time zone through Nov. 3. The rest of the season, NAU is compatible with the Mountain time zone. 2014-15 SEASON COACHING STAFF THE LUMBERJACKS SEASON REVIEW HISTORY
Season Outlook New-look Lumberjacks up to the task of defending their WAC title... Years of close calls were vanquished this past March. After four runner-up finishes in six years, the Northern Arizona swimming & diving team was finally able to hoist the Western Athletic Conference trophy. However, although the elusive championship is now in their possession, the Lumberjacks are not satisfied as they begin the 201415 season hungry to keep the WAC title here in Flagstaff. Defending the title won’t be easy as head coach Andy Johns will need to replace his decorated senior class of nine graduates, but the Lumberjacks are up to the task. “We return good experience and our freshmen are solid,” Johns said. “We have a slightly different look though. We’re going to get points from different events, but all in all I feel good about who we are. I know we’re going to have some challenges along the way, but I feel good about being in a position that if we do what we’re capable of doing, we’ll be right there at the end again.” The senior class – and backbone of the program over their fouryear careers – may be gone but Johns and the Lumberjacks return talent both in the pool and on the diving boards. Juniors Kendall Brown, the two-time defending WAC champion in the 1,650 freestyle, and Chelsea Jackson, a three-time diving bronze medalist at last year’s conference championships, are back for more as are seniors Alexis Juergens and Caitlin Wright among the 17 returning letterwinners. Now that this group knows the taste of a championship, this year’s squad should not be counted out despite what it lost. “The team is motivated,” Johns said. “They know everyone needs to be a little better because every team in the league is getting better. Our returners have a focus and resolve to show our newcomers

what it takes to win.” Freestyle When talking about NAU’s freestyle group, it is understandable to start with the team’s distance core. After all, Brown has won the last two championships in the mile and last season, the Lumberjacks swept the podium with Emma Lowther and Wright finishing second and third respectively. Entering her final season, Wright has three bronze medals in the 1,650 free to her name along with a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 500. Yet, this year the Lumberjacks have a deep and diverse group of freestylers that Johns anticipates will make noise in all distances. “Our sprint group has gotten stronger with the addition of Samm (Crocker) and Alina (Staffeldt),” Johns said. “If Alexis (Juergens) and Alex (Huff) do what they did last year, we’re going to be good. Caitlin and Kendall take over in the distance swimming, but Claire Hammond and Kimmy Richter will also help. I don’t think we dropped off on the distance side, but we’re better in the shorter freestyles. It never hurts to have a lot of freestylers.” At the conference meet last season, redshirt junior Alex Huff won the B final and finished ninth overall in the 50 free and was complemented by Juergens, who improved seven spots jumping from 20th to 13th in a year. The additions of Alina Staffeldt, who won the 100 free at the team’s Pentathlon in September, and Samm Crocker will bolster the team’s sprint crew while junior Trinity Frazee and sophomore Jori Lindquist provides depth at the 100 and 200 distances. Junior Cassie Ronai and freshman Roni Houck, the 100 free winner in the team’s Blue vs. Gold meet, will also contribute in the
LUMBERJACK SWIMMING & DIVING short-to-mid distances and junior Eva Pold is another name to count on in the 500 as part of NAU’s deep crop of freestyle swimmers. Backstroke Huff and sophomore Sara Lenhoff were pivotal in the Lumberjacks’ WAC title last season as they both competed in the 100 and 200 backstroke A finals. Lenhoff had a sensational first conference meet, picking up a bronze medal in the 100 back and a fourth-place finish in the 200 back, posting the second fastest times in school history in both events. Huff, the owner of the third-fastest time in the 100, meanwhile placed fifth in the 100 back and seventh in the 200 back. “Sara and Alex both had two top-eight finishes last year and we’re looking for Jori Lindquist to be better,” Johns said. “Dual-meet wise we have some versatility with Trinity Frazee, Claire Hammond and Kendall Brown all being able to swim backstroke. We’re looking for our relay spots because (the backstroker) is key to starting our medley relays and it’s nice to have experience here.” Lindquist placed 10th and 11th in the 100 and 200 respectively last season and Frazee swam in the C final in both events at the WAC Championships. Juniors Brooke Brittain and Lindsay Clark-Warren also both qualified for the top-24 and swam in the C finals, so the Lumberjacks are not short of talent or experience in the backstroke events. Freshman Allison Mann and Hammond are the team’s newcomers to the backstroke group. Breaststroke The Lumberjacks take a big blow in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes with the loss of Jordan Burnes, the school record holder in both events and defending WAC champion in the 200, and Stirling Smith to graduation. Still, the team’s breaststroke unit embodies the entire
team as it remains strong despite its losses. With the WAC Championship still in the balance last season, the Lumberjacks swung the momentum completely in their favor in the 200 breaststroke in which they claimed the top-three spots, four of the top-five and half of the top-10 in all. Although Burnes (first) and Smith (third) are gone, sophomore Urte Kazakeviciute (second), Caitlin Baker (fifth) and junior Monica Pruett (10th) return to lead a potent breaststroke core. “The loss of Stirling and Jordan is big but (Kazakeviciute, Baker and Pruett) are solid with good experience,” Johns said. “Melanie Harris is a good addition to this group and Roni Houck might see some time in the breaststrokes. We might miss out a little at the top end, but we have quality depth.” Kazakeviciute and Baker also finished fifth and 14th respectively in the 100 breaststroke and after just one season, Kazakeviciute already has the school’s second-fastest time in the 200 and the third-fastest time in the 100. Ronai also has championship experience in the breaststrokes as a returner. Three freshmen – Harris, Houck and Audrey Mann – add to the Lumberjacks’ breaststroke crew. Butterfly Like the breaststrokers, the team’s butterfliers will need to cope with the loss of a pair of top seniors in Rachel Palmer and Andrea Derflinger, but also pose the ability to not skip a beat in large part to the presence of Juergens. She picked up her first two individual All-WAC honors last season by finishing sixth in the 100 fly and seventh in the 200 fly and has already started her final season on a high note, breaking the Pentathlon record in the 100. Staffeldt will be a quality addition in the butterfly events and like Juergens, also broke the 100 fly Pentathlon record in her runner-up finish in the event. “Alexis is the leader of this group and Alina brings quality depth, providing us with a nice one-two punch in the 100,” Johns said. “In the 200, Kendall Brown can be a good 200 flier especially in dual meets, as can Kimmy Richter. We’re not sure what we’ll do with them at the end of the year, but Eva Pold can swim some butterfly. We have a pretty solid group of fliers.” Pold finished 14th in the 200 fly at the WAC Championships and has two top-15 finishes in her first two conference meets in the event. Individual Medley If the Lumberjacks are a little thin at one spot – at least at the beginning of the season – it is the individual medleys particularly at the 200 distance. Last season’s top-three finishers – Burnes, Palmer and Smith – are all gone, so NAU will search for a leader at this spot as the season progresses. Pruett and Lenhoff are the top returning finishers in the 200 IM last season at 19th and 22nd respectively. “This is probably the area where we’ll miss our seniors the most, especially in the 200 IM,” Johns said. “We feel good about our 400 group with Kendall, Monica, Caitlin (Baker) and Melanie. We might take a few hits at the 200 distance, like we did in the 50 free last year, but we plan on scoring points in different events with different people.”

Whereas NAU may have questions around the 200 IM, the Lumberjacks have a solid group of 400 IMers led by Brown, the school record holder in the event. Brown finished second in the 400 IM last season, one year after a third-place finish as a freshman. The Lumberjacks also received strong performances by Pruett, who finished seventh, and Baker, who finished 10th, at the WAC Championships last season. Pold advanced to the C final, finishing 18th and has two top-20 showings in the event in her career. Audrey Mann is also an IMer as NAU tries to reload in the medleys.

Harris may prove to be critical in the 200 IM in her first season, coming in as her high school’s record holder in the event. Allison Mann also finished eighth in the 200 IM at the Arizona state championships as a senior.
In addition to Jackson, junior Carlye Townsend and sophomore Alexa Geiger are back having combined for five top-eight finishes between the two of them last year. Having lost Gwen Smithberg, the defending WAC champion on platform, before the conference meet, the duo was instrumental in filling the void. Geiger placed in the top-eight on all three boards in her first championship meet while Townsend earned her first two all-conference nods.
Diving On the boards, diving coach Nikki Huffman returns three of her five divers from a year ago, a group that starts with Jackson. Jackson was a three-time All-WAC first team diver, placing third on each board and now has five All-WAC honors in her first two seasons. She begins her junior season having taken important strides in the summer, qualifying for her first USA Diving Senior National Championships on the 3-meter springboard.

felman and Emma Simmonds, both of whom had impressive prep careers in California. “Chelsea is getting stronger and she’s going to continue to do so,” Huffman said. “She’s motivated and dedicated to taking on every challenge and performing to her best every time she’s out there. Lex and Carlye are showing more signs of leadership and our newcomers – Emma and Alyssa – have been training well in our program so far. We’re a strong, well-balanced unit with a lot of experience on the conference side.” Jackson and Geiger both qualified for the NCAA Zone E Meet last season with Jackson advancing to the finals to finish 15th on 3-meter.

HEAD COACH ANDY JOHNS peated as the 200 backstroke champion, won silver in the 100 backstroke, and bronze in the 200 individual medley. Connell built off her sensational freshman season in which she won gold medals in both the 100 and 200 backstroke. She became the first multiple winner for NAU at a championship meet since Emily Simon in 2004 and hit NCAA qualifying times in both events. Connell was named to the 2010 and 2011 Division I Mid-Major All-America team by www.collegeswimming.com. She was joined on the 2011 squad by Emma Lowther after the freshman took home a silver medal at the WAC meet. Johns led NAU to a pair of second place finishes at the WAC Championships prior to a fifth place finish in 2010. The Lumberjacks earned the runner-up title among nine teams in 2008-09 and finished second among eight teams during the 2007-08 season. At the 2009 WAC Championships, the Lumberjacks earned 43 All-WAC Awards and set 11 school records, marking the most records set at the WAC meet in the five years NAU has been a member as well as the most records ever set at a conference meet in Johns’ 14 years. The 43 AllWAC Awards are also the most to date, and were four more than NAU had earned the previous year. Johns coached an individual gold medalist as then-junior Rachael Foe earned the honor in the 200 individual medley. Two of NAU’s relay teams also earned silver medals along with school records. Along with its second-place team finish in 2007-08, NAU earned 39 All-WAC Awards, set six school records and earned two special awards. Diving Coach Nikki Huffman received co-WAC Diving Coach of the Year and senior Natalie Hughes was named the WAC Diver of the Year. During NAU’s first three seasons as an affiliate member of the WAC, Johns helped improve the Lumberjacks’ fifth-place finish in their inaugural season in 2004-05 to a pair of third-place finishes. He was named WAC Coach of the Year in NAU’s rookie season and was pivotal in coaching Alexis Buckley to the 2006 NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga. Buckley swam in both the 1,650 and 500 freestyle and became the first female swimmer at NAU to represent the Lumberjacks in 12 years. Prior to joining the WAC, NAU finished second at the National Independent Conference (NIC) Championships in 2003-04 and Johns was named the NIC Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year. NAU had seven individual conference champions, tying the team record for the most champions in a single conference meet. The Lumberjacks also set 10 school records, and earned two other honors in addition to Johns’, as assistant coach Nikki Huffman earned her fourth Diving Coach of the Year honor and then-sophomore Blair Buder was named the Female Diver of the Year. Over the years, Johns has put NAU swimming and diving on the map on several levels, including the regional stage as well as producing perennial conference-title contenders when he moved the program from the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference into the all-Division I NIC in 1998-99. In 16 years against exclusively Division I competition at the conference level, Johns has led NAU to nine second-place finishes (including three straight from 2001-04) and four third-place efforts. Success for NAU not only shows in the team standings, but also in the record book. In Johns’ 18 years, NAU has earned 45 individual and relay conference titles, 121 school records (a high of 11 set at the 2009 WAC meet), nine conference records and 39 NCAA qualifying marks. Johns has always been a proponent of the “total” program - one that also succeeds in the classroom. Since the fall of 1996, his student-athletes have posted cumulative grade-point averages of 3.00 and higher in 34 of 36 academic semesters. The Lumberjacks have consistently had the most student-athletes earn WAC All-Academic honors among the schools in the league, with 22 earning the honor last year. NAU has been recognized nine times as an Academic All-America Team by the Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) including last year’s squad which posted a 3.58 grade point average in the spring. Johns came to NAU in 1996 from Clemson, where he trained the sprinters, including one NCAA All-American. Prior to that, he spent three years as head coach at Northeast Missouri State (now Truman State). During his tenure, his teams set 45 school records and five athletes posted their first national qualifying times. Johns is well-respected in the swimming research community, having presented at the American College of Sports Medicine national meeting twice, first about the effects of warm-up in 1991 and tapering in 1992. Johns is published in many sports medicine journals, including the International Journal of Sports Medicine and Medicine and Science in Sport in Exercise. He was awarded a research fellowship from the Institute of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina in 1990. As a collegian at East Carolina, Johns helped his team to the Colonial Athletic Association title in 1989. Prior to ECU, he was a junior-college
All-American, earning the honor eight times in two years at Broward (Fla.) Community College. Outside of his time as a coach, Johns has performed with the Flagstaff Light Opera Company, including the musicals Oliver and The Secret Garden, and is currently a member of The Flagstaff Master Chorale whom he sang with at Carnegie Hall in March 2012. Johns received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from ECU in 1989 and followed that with a master’s in exercise physiology in 1991. Johns is married to his wife, Misha, and has two daughters, Ali and Maddie.

NIKKI HUFFMAN 19TH SEASON • OAKLAND ‘91 State ‘92 1st Season • Arizona Nikki Huffman begins her 19th year at the helm of the Northern Arizona diving program, a squad that she has consistently led to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. A four-time National Independent Conference (NIC) Diving Coach of the Year and two-time Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Coach of the Year, Huffman now takes her team into its 11th year of WAC competition, a league which boasts some of the top divers in the country. Huffman’s divers were an integral part of NAU’s first-ever WAC Championship team in 2013-14 as all four of her divers scored points for the Lumberjacks at the conference meet. Sophomore Chelsea Jackson led the way as she placed third on all three boards to earn three AllWAC first team honors. Huffman also coached senior Jane Wakefield, sophomore Carlye Townsend and freshman Alexa Geiger to breakout performances at the WAC Championships. In her final conference meet, Wakefield scored on 1-meter and platform while Towsend earned a pair of All-WAC second team honors. Meanwhile, Geiger made a sensational debut on the conference stage placing in the top-seven on all three boards. All together, Huffman’s divers totaled eight all-conference honors. Jackson, Geiger and senior Gwen Smithberg represented NAU at the NCAA Zone E Meet highlighted by Jackson’s 15th place finish on 3-meter. That trio also combined to win four WAC Diver of the Week awards during the regular season. Huffman earned WAC Diving Coach of the Year in 2012-13 after her trio of divers performed spectacularly at the WAC Championships. Senior Kristy Ardavanis took gold on the 1-meter, NAU’s first WAC diving championship since 2008 and first 1-meter WAC title since 2004, and was later followed by junior Gwen Smithberg’s victory on the platform. The trio of Ardavanis, Smithberg and freshman Chelsea Jackson combined for four All-WAC first team honors and four All-WAC second team honors before proceeding onto the NCAA Zone meet where Ardavanis finished as an alternate for the national championship meet following a sixth-place finish on the 1-meter. Huffman’s guidance of Ardavanis over her four-year career culminated in Ardavanis being voted NAU’s Female Athlete of the Year as she left NAU with 10 WAC Diver of the Week honors in her final two seasons as well as the Wall Aquatic Center records on the 1-meter and 3-meter. NAU placed four divers in the NCAA Zone meet in 2011-12, including All-WAC First Team performer Kristy Ardavanis, who was named Verizon WAC Diver of the Week five times during the regular season. She took the silver on 1-meter and placed fourth on 3-meter to lead NAU at the WAC Championships and posted the second-highest scores in program history on both boards during the season. Seniors Holly Frost and Cassie Anderson and freshman Kali Lents joined Ardavanis as qualifiers for the NCAA Zone meet, and Lents’ score of 221.00 on platform at the WAC Championships was the second-best platform score in program history. The program reached new heights in 2010-11, as the Lumberjacks sent six divers to the NCAA Zone Regional Championships, the most in school history. Senior Lana Christensen was the top finisher posting an 11th-place finish on 3-meter. NAU combined to take home five All-WAC selections, while senior Taryn Harris named WAC Diver of the Week twice and Christensen was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America At Large Team.

In 2009-10, the diving team picked up nine All-WAC honors including medals from Harris and freshman Kristy Ardavanis. Ardavanis won bronze on 3-meter springboard and Harris won silver on 1-meter. Huffman qualified four divers for the NCAA Zone Diving Regional Championships. Harris went on to place 12th on the 1-meter at the Zone meet. In 2008-09, Harris earned bronze medals at the WAC Championships on both 1-meter and 3-meter. Harris went on to earn eighth place at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships on the 1-meter, joining two other Lumberjacks at that meet. Huffman and her divers had a breakout year in 2007-08, as senior Natalie Hughes became NAU’s first-ever gold-medal winner in diving in the WAC (3-meter) and was named the WAC Diver of the Year. Huffman herself earned her first WAC Diving Coach of the Year Award, sharing the honor with Mike Brown of Hawaii. In the eight years prior to joining the WAC, the Lumberjacks dominated conference competition in the NIC. Huffman has brought the Lumberjacks to an elite status at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships, represented by schools from the Pacific-10, WAC, Big West and Mountain West conferences. NAU won 11 individual conference diving titles in eight years in the NIC women’s competition under Huffman’s guidance, and earned four conference diver-of-the-year awards (including back-to-back honors by Kate Morgan in 2002 and 2003, and the most recent by Blair Buder in 2004). Huffman was named the Women’s Diving Coach of the Year four times (1997, 2002, 2003, 2004). A year prior to Harris’ impressive eighth-place finish at the Zone meet, Hughes, who represented NAU all four years of her career, finished seventh on both 1-meter and 3-meter. Danielle Borth was a three-time representative, and placed 10th on the 1-meter and 12th on the platform as a senior. Both divers finished in the top-8 on all three events at the WAC Championships their junior and senior years, with Hughes earning the bronze medal on the 1-meter as a junior and the gold as a senior, and Borth taking bronze on 1-meter and 3-meter as a senior.

DIVING COACH NIKKI HUFFMAN Not only has NAU been dominant on the conference level, but it is starting to gain a name for itself on a national level. Over the last nine years, Lumberjacks have taken 32 spots at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships, which is the fourth-most among all schools represented at the meet over that span (trailing only UCLA, Stanford and Arizona) - ahead of most Pac-12 and all Mountain West, WAC and Big West schools. The senior class of 2003 for Huffman was the most successful, as all three - Kate Morgan, Maryann Wagener and Courtney McKenzie - participated in the zone meet in all four years they were at the Mountain Campus, led by Morgan as the top finisher every year and even being a second alternate to the NCAA Championships in 2003. Over the last 13 years, Huffman has produced multiple divers that qualified for the zone meet every year. All in all, 23 different divers have represented NAU at the zone diving meet on the women’s side since Huffman arrived; that is nearly twice the number that represented the school in the previous 13 years of the program’s existence. While success on the boards has been prominent in describing Huffman, her charges have also been superior in the classroom. The divers have helped the Lumberjacks be named an Academic All-America Team by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) six times - an honor given to a team with a grade-point average of 2.90 and higher. Anna Deem was named an honorable-mention Academic All-America by the CSCAA and Courtney McKenzie also earned the CSCAA honor but, in addition, was named the NAU Golden Eagle Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2002-03. She also earned selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Women’s At Large District VIII First Team, making her a nominee for Academic All-America consideration. Danielle Borth was the first diver to be named Academic All-WAC every year of her career. Borth earned another first when The Leadership Consortium (TCL) in Phoenix named her one of their 2008 Community Leadership Award winners. Borth contributed 132 hours of community service as a senior, and was also named the female Lumberjack Service Award winner. Prior to NAU, Huffman spent two years at Clemson, where she was voted the 1996 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Diving Coach of the Year. With the Tigers, Huffman coached both men’s and women’s diving teams to winning seasons, with the women’s team being ranked in the top25 of the national coaches’ poll in 1996. She had one ACC champion each year and took five divers to the zone meet in 1996. Huffman began her coaching career at her alma mater, Oakland University. She coached six All-Americans and three Division II national champions, being named Division II National Men’s Diving Coach of the Year in 1994. At Oakland, she coached Dario D’Fazio, who represented Venezuela in the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. As an athlete, Huffman was a seven-time All-America and twotime national champion during her career at Oakland, where she returned every time the NIC Championships were held at the Rochester, Mich., school. A 1991 graduate of Oakland, the former Nikki Kelsey was married in the summer of 2001. She gave birth to a daughter, Kayla, in the summer of 2003, and to a son, Darren, in the spring of 2005.

Laura Thomas enters her third season as an assistant coach for the Northern Arizona Swimming & Diving program. A twotime NCAA All-American swimmer at Georgia, Thomas has founded two aquatic clubs and been a head coach for three club teams and a high school team with more than 15 years of experience in the state of Georgia. Thomas earned her first coaching position in 1997 as the head coach for the Deer Run swim team in Conyers, Ga., a position she held for more 15 years during which time she led swimmers to six county championships. Thomas founded both the Cobia Aquatic Club in Conyers and the Swim Oconee Aquatic Club in Watkinsville, Ga., and served as head coach, president and CEO of both organizations. Thomas also has a wealth of experience in teaching, having taught at three different middle schools since 1997. Since 2006 Thomas taught math and social studies to seventh and eighth graders at Oconee County middle school in Watkinsville while also serving as the head coach of the Oconee County High School swimming & diving team for the last three seasons. In addition to those duties, she served as an assistant coach to Harvey Humphries, Associate Head Coach at the University of Georgia, while working for the Athens Bulldogs Swim Club. Thomas put together a storied career both in the pool and in the classroom at Georgia where she was a two-time NCAA All-American. She was named All-SEC all four years of her career and was named team captain her senior year. Thomas participated in the 1984 US Olympic trials and was the UGA school record holder in the 200 butterfly at the time of her graduation. Academically, Thomas was a three-time Academic All-American, earned the NCAA Post Graduate scholarship, and was a Rhodes Scholar nominee. Thomas graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Georgia in 1988 with a Bachelor’s in marketing before earning a Master of Education in instructional technology from Troy University in 2005. Liz Hobbs begins her 15th year as an assistant coach for the Lumberjack swimming and diving program. She has been a familiar face around the program for several years, including serving as the “Voice of Wall Aquatic Center” performing public-address duties during swim meets. Hobbs has a long pedigree in swimming, both as a competitor and a coach. As a swimmer, she is a 15-time U.S. Masters Swimming national champion and set a Masters world record for the 50-meter freestyle in 1988. She was a 10-time All-America performer over four years at Alabama (1979-83), also winning Southeastern Conference individual titles. She was a qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1980, 1984 and 1988. She was a state sprint champion and record holder in both the 50 and 100 freestyles in Florida (1977-79) and Illinois (1976). As a coach, she has served in several capacities at the club and collegiate levels. Since 1997, she has been the head coach of the Arizona Mountain Masters club team based in Flagstaff. She also had been a men’s and women’s assistant swim coach at Illinois Wesleyan (1987-92) and a women’s assistant at Illinois State (1985-86). She has coached several club teams in Illinois, New Jersey and Pennsylvania before coming to Flagstaff. Other opportunities within the sport have come in marketing and sales. Since 1995, Hobbs has been national marketing manager for Speedo Authentic Fitness, and has worked with Dolphin International (1994-95) as national sales manager and as assistant director of team sales and promotions for The Finals Swimwear (1992-94). In addition to her coaching duties, Hobbs is in her fourth year as a part-time lecturer in marketing in the NAU Franke College of Business. Hobbs earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing/management from Illinois State. She is married to Dr. Brandon Cruickshank, an assistant professor of chemistry at NAU. The couple have two children, Baden and Camden.

A season that culminates in a championship will always be remembered as a successful one. But when a team is thrown as many obstacles as the Northern Arizona swimming & diving squad dealt with on their way to the first Western Athletic Conference championship in program history, the 2013-14 season is even sweeter. “We had contributions from everybody all year long and it started with our first dual meet and it just carried all the way through,” said head coach Andy Johns, the WAC Coach of the Year. “We’ve been so close so many times and to have a year that wasn’t easy and perfect end with a championship is fantastic. We were well-prepared for a tight conference meet because this year was tougher than most in some respects and we got clutch swims from a lot of people during different times of the year.” Having lost some key swimmers and divers from their conference runner-up team the year before, the fourth second-place finish in the last six seasons, winning the WAC this year was going to require a collective effort. Knowing that, the Lumberjacks went to work starting with their season opener back in October against New Mexico. Facing an early deficit to the Lobos, the Lumberjacks powered their way to victory behind 10 individual wins, three coming from sophomore Kendall Brown. Dual meet victories against Idaho, which was just a foreshadowing of things to come, and Northern Colorado led to a 3-0 start to the season before NAU suffered a narrow four-point loss to Colorado State. A pair of invitationals followed with the NAU swimmers competing at the UNLV Invite and the divers making the trip south to the Arizona Wildcat Diving Invite. Facing top-caliber competition from the Pac-12 and more in addition to inclement pool and weather conditions, the Lumberjacks stood to the test with five swimmers placing in the top-eight individually in Las Vegas and sophomore Chelsea Jackson leading the diving contingent with top-10 finishes on all three boards.

A dual meet win over New Mexico State gave the Lumberjacks momentum with the turn of the calendar to 2014 heading into their week-long training camp in Tucson, capped off with a double-dual versus Arizona and Oregon State. While the swimmers had time off until the team’s final dual meet against Grand Canyon, the divers were struck with a big blow during their trip to Air Force for the AFA Diving Invite. On the final day of competition, senior Gwen Smithberg suffered what appeared to be a season-ending injury at the time, forcing her to miss her Senior Day as well as the conference championships. In an emotionally charged final home meet for the team’s nine seniors, the Lumberjacks pulled away late, dominating the final third of the meet to defeat in-state rival GCU. The meet was one of the fastest ever at the Wall Aquatic Center with nine pool records going down on the day with senior Emma Lowther (100 free), Brown (800 free), senior Stirling Smith (200 breast) and junior Alexis Juergens (100 fly) etching their names onto the Wall Aquatic Center record chart. Following a 5-3 dual meet season in which 14 different Lumberjacks won at least one individual event with Lowther pacing the team with nine victories, NAU traveled to San Antonio with high hopes of erasing the program’s recent close calls. The meet was expected to be tightly contested and it stayed true to expectations through the first three days. Despite not winning a single event, the Lumberjacks led or had a share of the lead at the end of each of the first three days (tied after day one and ahead by six and 19 points respectively after days two and three). Yet Idaho remained on NAU’s heels heading into the final day of competition with the trophy on the line. With the WAC Championship within grasp, the Lumberjacks brought their ‘A’ game in the morning session, punching a ticket for 17 entries into the night’s scoring heats with 11 of them in the championship finals. The night session got off to resounding start with the team’s dis-

Brown defended her conference title in the 1,650 freestyle and was followed by Lowther and junior Caitlin Wright in the topthree. Off to a fast start, the Lumberjacks took full advantage of their championship finals appearances and essentially clinched the title by crushing the competition in the 200 breaststroke. Senior Jordan Burnes earned her first individual gold medal of her career in the event and freshman Urte Kazakeviciute and Smith completed NAU’s second medal sweep of the night. In all, NAU snagged four of the top-five spots and half of the top-10 in total in the event. Not to be outdone, the Lumberjack divers were clutch on the boards as they came together in the absence of Smithberg. Jackson as well as freshman Alexa Geiger, sophomore Carlye Townsend and senior Jane Wakefield all scored in the final diving event on platform, the second time in three diving events at the WAC Championships, that they did so. “When I look back and reflect, we had a very successful season,” said diving coach Nikki Huffman. “All five divers trained hard and brought great attitude day in and day out. Going into WAC, we had to overcome a traumatic event and they stepped up and dove well. We had great leadership and depth and I am proud of all of their efforts.” The entire team’s depth was on full display over the four days in San Antonio, as it was all season long, as a total of 20 athletes – 16 swimmers and four divers – scored points in at least one event. Of the 20, 16 of them got into the top-eight championship final in at least one event, overcoming just two individual gold medals and one total medal in the relays. Burnes broke both of school records in the breaststroke events with a pair of NCAA B Standard times, while Kazakeviciute and Brown notched B times in the 200 breast and 400 IM respectively. A trio of divers wrapped up the season at the NCAA Zone E Meet as Jackson, a three-time bronze medalist at the conference meet, and Geiger, a second-team All-WAC selection on all three boards, was joined by the triumphant return of Smithberg. Jackson qualified for the finals on both 1-meter and 3-meter while Geiger concluded her spectacular first season with a Zone appearance and Smithberg was afforded the opportunity to dive amongst the best divers in the region to close out her career.

After falling short so often, the Lumberjacks, ranked No. 25 nationally in the final CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Rankings, finally conquered the Western Athletic Conference. It will be tough to replace a senior class that has contributed so much over the last four years in the pool, in the classroom and in the community, but after what NAU endured last year, nobody should be surprised when the Lumberjacks are right back in contention for a title repeat this year. “It’s motivating (to repeat),” Johns said. “We’re losing 200 points from our seniors, but with our incoming freshmen we’ll be good in different ways next year. The challenge will be to continue to work hard and persevere to be ready for another battle.”

2014-15 SEASON COACHING STAFF THE LUMBERJACKS SEASON REVIEW HISTORY
NAU HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES AND NCAA PARTICIPANTS Valerie Carter (1984-87), a 2006 NAU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, didn’t know it but right after the ball dropped to start 2006, the ball started rolling on her induction. Keeping it a complete secret, Joe Carter contacted the NAU Athletic Media Relations office in early January to inquire about nominating his wife for the honor and from there, Carter’s numerous accomplishments in diving at NAU began to surface. Carter (formely Simmons) qualified for the NCAA Championships twice, becoming the first athlete in the program to ever qualify, and also became the school record-holder in both the one and three-meter events as well as the Pac-West Conference champion in both events as a junior. Carter was the team co-captain as a senior, all-academic Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference honoree and was twice named the team’s most outstanding diver.

Carter didn’t just receive a degree, pack up and leave. She has made Flagstaff her home and NAU her career. She has four different degrees from the university in physical therapy including an advanced master’s and a doctorate. Carter currently works as an associate professor in the Physical Therapy Department and also owns and operates Carter Rehabilitation in town along with her husband.
April Diez-Walker (1992-96), a first-ballot inductee into the NAU Athletics Hall of Fame, was the first female swimmer to compete at the Division I Swimming and Dving Championships and is the only swimming All-American in school history. Diez-Walker was a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier and still holds three individual school records - the 500 freestyle, 1,000 freestyle and 1,650 freestyle. A 1994 NCAA All-American in the 1,650 freestyle, she finished sixth overall at the NCAA meet and placed ninth in the 500 freestyle, earning honorable mention All-America honors. She was also a championship finalist at the 1993 World University Games in Buffalo, N.Y. Diez-Walker was also named the top female scholar-athlete in the nation following the 1993-94 academic year based on her athletic and academic accomplishments (a perfect 4.00 grade point average). The former April Diez was named Female Swimmer of the Year following the 1995 Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships after winning the 1,650 free, 200 free, 500 free and 400 individual medley and setting an NAU record in the process. A native of Phoenix, she earned her degree in sociology at NAU, completed law school at the University of California, Berkeley, before moving back to Phoenix.
APRIL DIEZ-WALKER
A 2007 graduate of NAU, Alexis Buckley (2003-07) was the first female swimmer in 12 years to participate in the NCAA Championships when she qualified as a junior in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:27.12, second only to All-American April Diez’s time of 16:18.13. Buckley was the first NAU swimmer to earn a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) title, garnering two of them since the Lumberjacks joined the WAC in 2004-05. As a junior, Buckley won the 1,650 freestyle at the WAC Championships and as a senior she set a school-record time of 4:23.73, that has since been broken, en route to winning her second title in the 400 individual medley. As a freshman, Buckley also won a conference title in the 1,650 freestyle before the Lumberjacks moved to the WAC. At the 2006 NCAA Championships, Buckley placed 19th in the 1,650 freestyle and 33rd in the prelims of the 500 freestyle.
ALEXIS BUCKLEY Pam Rogers, a 2007 NAU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, was the head coach for the swimming and diving program from 1983-96 and also the first coach of the program. Rogers won five Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference titles during her tenure and was responsible for the addition of the men’s program, which also won five conference titles. Rogers was the first woman in the sport of swimming and diving to be the head coach of a combined men’s and women’s Division I team. The team finished 29th at the 1994 NCAA Championships behind All-American April Diez’s performance in the 500 and 1,650 freestyle. Rogers coached 39 women’s conference champions in individual events and 47 Golden Eagle Scholar Athletes. She was a four-time All-American, a two-time national champion and an alternate for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1976, and went on to coach Arizona State to two national and four conference titles.

2014-15 SEASON COACHING STAFF THE LUMBERJACKS SEASON REVIEW HISTORY
ACADEMICS The NAU swimming and diving program continued its strong academic excellence during the 2013-14 school year. The team posted a team GPA of 3.36 during the fall 2013 semester and a 3.58 GPA during the spring 2014 semester. The squad’s cumulative GPA has been above 3.20 every semester since the spring 2006 semester. The Lumberjacks’ spring GPA tied for the seventh-best team GPA among all NCAA Division I women’s swimming and diving programs on the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team. They had the highest GPA in the Western Athletic Conference. Three student athletes - Jordan Burnes, Alexa Geiger and Chelsea Jackson - each earned CSCAA NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Scholar All-American Honorable Mention honors. Twenty-seven Lumberjacks were 2013-14 Golden Eagle Scholar-Athlete Award recipients while the squad also totaled 22 WAC All-Academic selections. Graduating seniors Andrea Derflinger, Emma Lowther and Stirling Smith each received the university’s prestigious Gold Axe Award. Smith was also named NAU’s Female Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Arizona University
Northern Arizona University provides an outstanding undergraduate residential education strengthened by important research, graduate and professional programs, and a responsive distance learning network delivering programs throughout Arizona. NAU’s underlying core strength at the undergraduate level is in its ability to provide knowledge of the world, an ability to appreciate change, diversity, and life itself. Located at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is 140 miles north of Phoenix at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40. Douglas J. Wall Aquatic Center
The Douglas J. Wall Aquatic Center (formerly the Natatorium) opened in November 1983, just in time to house the inaugural Northern Arizona University women’s swimming and diving team. Thirty-one years later, the facility is considered a world-class training facility for national teams worldwide. Wall Aquatic Center is an Olympic-size swimming and diving complex, which is open not only to the NAU swim team but also to the public, students, faculty and staff as well as the NAU water polo club teams. It also houses a small weight room, featuring free weights and a Universal weight machine. The carpeted mezzanine level, which overlooks nearly the length of the 50-meter pool, can accommodate 350 spectators. The 704,000-gallon pool features two one-meter and two three-meter diving boards, a 13-foot-deep diving tank, six 25-meter lap lanes (seven feet deep), eight 50-meter lap lanes (four to 13 feet deep) and a three-foot therapy pool area as well as handicap access. The building itself is 45,000 square feet, including underground tunnels around the pool walls - complete with underwater viewing, mechanical and storage rooms, locker rooms, offices, a classroom and 10,000 square feet of pool deck. The swimming and diving complex and the 7,000-foot elevation have attracted Olympic medal winners such as Pablo Morales, Summer Sanders, Lea Loveless and most recent medalists Gary Hall Jr., Anthony Ervin and Dana Vollmer to train in Flagstaff. In 1990 the High Altitude Challenge was held in the Wall Aquatic Center, featuring former world-record holders Matt Biondi and Tom Jager. Several national teams used the facility in the year prior to the recent London Games to enhance their training regimens. Forty medals were won by swimmers at the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games who used the Wall Aquatic Center as part of their preparations. The facility added a bulkhead in 2000 to enhance its versatility as a world-class training facility. The 2000-01 season-opening meet vs. San Diego State was the first to use the bulkhead in competition, producing the first collegiate meet in Flagstaff held on a 25-yard course.

2014-15 SEASON COACHING STAFF The Northern Arizona swimming & diving team will have a new home beginning in 2016 as construction for the new North Campus Athletic and Recreation Complex began in May 2014. The 120,000 square foot complex will replace the current Wall Aquatic Center and will feature an Olympic-size swimming pool and separate diving well with platform in addition to serving as a home facility for the NAU tennis teams. The Lumberjacks participated in the groundbreaking on May 1, 2014. “This is a tremendous day for NAU Swimming & Diving, NAU Tennis and really for the entire university and community. This facility is going to serve so many people in such a great way. I’m so thankful to the administration and everyone who has put in so much hard work to make this happen. NAU: WHERE THE WORLD TRAINS The Wall Aquatic Center, home to the NAU swimming and diving program, is a prominent training facility for world class athletes, which have included several national teams from around the world, American gold-medal swimmers like Gary Hall Jr. and Anthony Ervin, as well as World and Olymic champion Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe and four-time Olympic gold medalist and Japanese swimmer Kosuke Kitajima. Kitajima trained in Flagstaff prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics and went on to win gold medals in both the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke. As Kitajima said to Swimming Techinique magazine, “Whenever I come here (to Flagstaff), I always improve my time.” Flagstaff works for an Olympic gold medalist; just imagine what it can do for you. Living and training in an environment such as Flagstaff, at an elevation of 7,000 feet above sea level, provides many benefits to athletes and coaches in pursuit of peak performances. Unlike the international teams which only come to Flagstaff for relatively short altitude training camps, the athetes at Northern Arizona University enjoy the benefits of long-term exposure to altitude. Although not researched in depth, anecdotal evidence suggests that the benefits of living and training at a significant elevation result in long-term improvement of athletic performance. Crucial to the success of our athletes is an application of years of knowledge and continual learning from the best coaches Sophie Pascoe, the world Paralympic record holder in the 200 butterfly who in the world, who visit NAU regularly for altitude training cycles. Smart, scientific, efficient training with a common goal of improved performance over the long haul is challenging, but the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona University are primed to meet the challenge. In 2012, 152 athletes from 22 countries who trained in Flagstaff competed in the Olympics or Paralympics. HYPO2 Sport Management worked with athletes in swimming and track & field that desired to train at high altitude in NAU’s world-class facilities. In swimming, 10 Olympians and eight Paralympians that trained in Flagstaff brought back medals from London in representing six different countries. Tunisian Olympian Oussama Mellouli brought home gold in the Men’s 10k Open Water while four Paralympians earned gold, three of them earning multiple gold medals. New Zealand Paralympian Sophie Pascoe led the medal charge with three Golds and three Silvers.

UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT - DR. RITA CHENG Meet NAU’s 16th president, Dr. Rita Cheng During Dr. Rita Cheng’s first visit to campus, her speech before a standing room only crowd left little room for doubt about the kind of president she would be for Northern Arizona University. “I have always believed I have a responsibility to help others through service,” she said. “I firmly believe we have an obligation to give back, and I try to
ourselves as part of something much greater than ourselves. We cannot isolate, we must invite people in, we must go outside our walls.” Before moving to SIU, Cheng spent 22 years in teaching and administrative roles at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, including five years as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Cheng, who was also a professor of accounting at SIU, earned her Ph.D. in management from the Fox School of Business and Management at Temple University. She earned her MBA degree from the University of Rhode Island and a bachelor of business administration degree with honors from Bishop‘s University in Quebec. A 28-member search committee of ABOR members, NAU faculty and staff, and community, business, tribal and educational leaders contributed to the decision to choose Cheng. The new NAU president joins the ABOR Enterprise Executive Committee, comprised of the presidents of Arizona State University, NAU, the University of Arizona, and ABOR as the executive leadership of the Arizona public university enterprise system responsible for driving achievement of statewide goals. “Dr. Cheng’s impressive career in higher education and her transformative leadership will advance NAU to even greater heights, enable the achievement of the university’s ambitious goals, and foster enhanced student success,” said ABOR chair Rick Myers, who served as co-chair of the hiring committee. “This is the beginning of a legacy that will serve the entire state.”
live by that value.” Cheng was unanimously appointed by the Arizona Board of Regents to be the next NAU president when John Haeger steps down later this summer. Her three-year contract began Aug. 15. Cheng, who was chancellor at Southern Illinois University, opened her that first on campus presentation by saying she was “humbled and honored” to be considered for the presidency, acknowledging that NAU’s upward trajectory—much to the credit of President Haeger—was no secret nationally and had been noticed by her from afar. Visiting in person only confirmed that view, she said. “At the heart of it all resides a talented faculty and staff that makes it possible.” The incoming president spent a recent whirlwind first official visit on June 12 meeting with campus administrative and faculty leadership. Throughout her engaging presentation in a jampacked Ashurst Auditorium, Cheng laid out the vision and values that define her, and offered glimpses into the early life experiences that drive her to succeed. During a 17-minute presentation to hundreds in Ashurst and hundreds more watching online, Cheng explained how growing up on a farm in Wisconsin taught her “the value of hard work and doing what you have committed to do—being authentic and true to your goals.” Cheng’s own journey through higher education, raising a family and negotiating a steadily rising career reinforced beliefs she exudes as a university leader today, with an appreciation that she moved into expanding horizons for women and first-generation students. “I have always believed I have a responsibility to help others through service,” she said. Candidly, Cheng simply posed the question she correctly presumed was on everyone’s mind: “What kind of president might I be?” In answering, Cheng shared “the values I bring to all I do.” An accountant by training, she acknowledged the role of data in making informed decisions, but said “numbers alone cannot answer the human questions. To answer those questions, a leader needs to hear from all the very human stakeholders in the university’s future.” Themes of shared governance, transparency, communication, accountability and inclusiveness followed. She noted her support for a strong, academically focused athletics program, but also emphasized, “music, art, theater, distinguished speakers, and other cultural and recreational activities that contribute to the vibrancy of our campus.” Cheng turned to the citizens of Flagstaff by saying the university must define communities broadly rather than narrowly. “We must view Dr. Rita Cheng was appointed the 16th president of Northern Arizona University on June 18, 2014.

In her first year at NAU, Campos guided the Lumberjacks to the prestigious Presidents’ Cup as the NAU Athletics Department was recognized for their overall excellence in competition and in the classroom. The Lumberjacks finished first in overall athletic points and tied for second in overall academic performance as they became the fourth institution to win multiple Presidents’ Cups, winning their second Presidents’ Cup (first was 200506). NAU also claimed the 2013-14 Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Trophy; the first true sweep by an institution since 2000-01. The Lumberjacks captured five team championships, with an additional eight teams finishing in the top five. The success on and off the field continues, and over the past two years, Campos saw her department capture 52 total conference championships. Most recently during the 2013-14, six teams – men’s cross country and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field all captured Big Sky Championships while women’s swimming & diving won its first Western Athletic Conference Championships – and 19 student-athletes combined for 24 individual titles between cross country and track & field in the Big Sky and swimming & diving in the WAC. Beyond championships, the Lumberjacks produced 183 all-conference honorees and 13 student-athletes that combined for 18 All-American honors. In the classroom, the Lumberjacks once again proved that academics is at the forefront of the student-athlete experience as NAU finished with a department-wide 3.125 cumulative GPA. Ten of 13 teams finished the 2012-13 academic year with a GPA of at least 3.00 led by the volleyball team, who recorded a 3.57 GPA, followed by swimming & diving at 3.50 and soccer at 3.42. Two student-athletes received CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District honors, one of which was named a CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American First Team honoree. NAU had 139 total student-athletes earn All-Academic honors by the Big Sky and WAC. A total of 58 student-athletes earned their degrees during the 2013-14 academic year. All 15 sponsored sports exceeded NCAA academic standards for the fifth consecutive year as the department posted an overall APR of 973. Nine squads carried multi-year totals above 960, while six teams accomplished perfect single-year scores of 1000 led by the women’s tennis and swimming & diving teams who received the APR Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for earning a perfect single-year APR each of the last four years. Campos and the Lumberjacks continue to give back to the community as her student-athletes completed the most community service hours ever in department history. The Lumberjacks’ set a goal of 4,000 hours for the 2013-14 academic year – they eclipsed the mark with an instrumental 4,378 hours. Campos made four coaching hires, changing the culture of NAU basketball with the hires of Jack Murphy from the University of Memphis to lead the Lumberjack men’s team and Sue Darling from the University of Arizona to head the women’s squad. In her second year, she hired two coaches away from Conference USA. Ken Murphy from the University of Texas-El Paso was named to guide the volleyball program, and, from Southern Mississippi, Ki Kroll was hired to lead the men’s tennis program. Campos took over the leadership of the Lumberjack Athletics department after serving as the Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of Texas at El Paso since August of 2006. With her hiring at NAU, Campos, 35, became one of 26 females and the youngest in the country to lead a Division I program, including 13 head athletic administrators at the Football Championship Subdivision level. Campos served as the sport administrator for the Miner men’s and women’s cross country, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s track and field programs at UTEP. Campos also was the primary administrator for compliance, CHAMPS/Life Skills, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, and cheerleading. She was the advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and served as the liaison to the Intercollegiate Athletic Council, Office of Student Life, Miner Village, and the UTEP Police Department.
In her tenure at UTEP, she also had oversight of the women’s golf, rifle, and softball programs, served as championship director for numerous conference championships, and co-hosted a weekly television show, Miner Sports Weekly. Dr. Campos also assisted with athletic facility enhancements and co-directed the planning and design of the $2.6 million Helen of Troy Softball Complex, which opened in September 2005. In 2006, Campos served as the NCAA liaison for the Self Study Report for NCAA Certification and continued to oversee all gender, minority equity, and student welfare strategic plans. She was responsible for Title IX staff education and staff diversity training. In 2005, she created the Athletics Diversity Graduate Assistantship Program and served on the UTEP Women’s Resource Advisory Board. She was promoted to the Senior Associate position after serving as the Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator since August of 2003. She also served two years as the Assistant Dean of Students within the UTEP Division of Student Affairs. Dr. Campos had the opportunity to serve on a number of NCAA Committees, including the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, the NCAA Rifle Committee, and chaired the NCAA Women’s Soccer Committee. She was a member of the Conference USA Joint Group and served on the Senior Woman Administrator administrative group. In 20052006, when UTEP joined Conference USA, she served on the Conference USA Strategic Planning Committee and assisted in the development of the realigned Conference USA’s vision, core values, mission, and strategic objectives. She also represented UTEP on conference committees, including the budget subcommittee, legislative committee, championships selection committee, and various sport committees. Dr. Campos previously served as the Assistant Dean of Students at UTEP from 2001-03. Campos coordinated and administered the university’s student discipline system, interpreted the University of Texas System Regents’ Rules and Regulations governing the student academic honesty and conduct code, and provided information to the university community on discipline policies, rules, regulations, and procedures. She served as a mentor to an undergraduate student participating in the NASPA Minority Undergraduate Fellows Program and served on a variety of campus committees including the UTEP President’s Advisory Committee on Women, Student Affairs Staff Development Committee, Faculty Senate Student Conduct Committee, and the University Health Awareness Committee. In the community, Campos was a member of the Girl Scouts of the Rio Grande board and the Junior League of El Paso. Dr. Campos holds a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Texas at El Paso. She graduated from Colorado State University where she earned a bachelor’s of science degree in Business Administration and a master’s of science degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education. Campos is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA), National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) and Flagstaff Leadership Program. A native of Las Animas, Colo., Campos is married to Darren D’Attilio. They live in Flagstaff with their son, Christopher.
