2015 SEASON COACHING STAFF THE LUMBERJACKS SEASON REVIEW HISTORY

Season Outlook FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – During the 2013-14 season, the Northern Arizona Track and Field team swept the Big Sky Indoor and Outdoor Championships, the fourth time a team has done so in conference history. The Lumberjacks are the only team to have done it twice, the first time being in 1990. In the indoor preseason poll, the ‘Jacks were picked to finish first in the conference, aided by 17 returning individual Big Sky Champions. Four of those – Julia Viberg, Deante Kemper, Vernon Jamison and Matt McElroy – have all won multiple titles. In preseason rankings released by the USTFCCCA, Kemper’s 2014 high jump height of 2.19m was ranked 10th while Brian Shrader ranks sixth in the 3000m (7:51.48) and the 5000m (13:40.94). The ‘Jacks will also use momentum stemming from their sweep of the 2014 Big Sky Cross Country Championships and the men’s fourth place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, the third-straight podium finish for the Lumberjack men. Distance The Lumberjacks look to continue their storied tradition in the distance events in 2015, with five All-Americans – Futsum Zienasellassie, Matt McElroy, Brian Shrader, Caleb Hoover and Tyler Byrne – competing. Zienasellassie is a three-time cross country All-American, his best finish was third this past November. McElroy is a two-time cross country All-American and has won Big Sky Championships in the 3000m, 5000m, 10,000m and cross country. Shrader has won Big Sky titles in cross country and the 800m and was a cross country All-American in 2012 and 2013. Last November, he set a national record when he won the national 12K and was named the US Track and Field Athlete of the Week.

Hoover picked up a track and field All-American honor last spring in the 3000m steeplechase and earned his first cross country All-American honor this past November. Byrne came in as a fifth year transfer for the ‘Jacks after earning All-American distinction at the University of Louisville. This season, he was All-Big Sky and All-Mountain Region for Northern Arizona. On the women’s side, Melanie Townsend comes in as a returning Big Sky Champion in the 10,000m and a 2014 national cross country championship qualifier. Rolonda Jumbo picked up a silver medal in the 10,000m and a bronze in the 5000m at last year’s outdoor championships along with competing at the 2013 national cross country championships. Paige Gilchrist made a strong indoor showing during her freshman year, finishing second in both the 3000m and 5000m at the indoor championships. Jumps Deante Kemper returns to the ‘Jacks this year after sweeping the indoor and outdoor championships in the high jump. During the outdoor season, he competed at the NCAA West Preliminary Round and the NCAA Championships in the high jump. He was also was a contributor on the sprints, scoring in the 60m hurdles at the indoor championships and finishing third in the 110m hurdles at the outdoor championships. Alexis Clay is the top returning female jumper. She won the Big Sky Indoor Championship in the long jump with a career best 5.98m and finished third in the triple jump with a career-best 12.06m. During the outdoor season, she posted a runner-up finish in the long jump and a fifth place finish in the triple jump.

LUMBERJACK TRACK AND FIELD Sprints Vernon Jamison returns to lead the NAU men’s sprint team. At last year’s indoor championships, Jamison helped the 4X400m team to a Big Sky Championship while picking up his own individual championship in the 60m hurdles. At the outdoor championships, he picked up a title in the 110m hurdles and added points to the ‘Jacks total in the 400m hurdles, 4X100m relay and 4X400m relay. On the women’s side, Darriel Banks is back to lead the women’s team to a repeat indoor championship. Banks holds the school record in the women’s 60m dash with a time of 7.39 and won the Big Sky Championship last year. During the outdoor season, she was named Big Sky All-Conference in the 100m dash and was a part of the 4X100 relay team that finished fourth at the conference meet. Shamelle Pless also returns as a force for the sprints corps. She broke the school record in the 200m with her Big Sky Championship time of 23.86. She also contributed points with top eight finishes in the 60m dash and the 4X400m relay. During the outdoor season, she competed in five events, scoring points in four of those. Ashley Taylor won her first Big Sky title last spring when she ran a time of 58.65 in the 400m hurdles. Throws: Jessica Weise will look to lead the throws corps after coming off second place finishes in the indoor and outdoor shot put championships and a trip to the NCAA West Preliminary Round. She won the Big Sky Championship in the outdoor shot put in 2013. Julia Viberg will also be a strong competitor for the ‘Jacks in 2015. Viberg is the reigning Big Sky Champion in the outdoor discus and also competed at the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Shawn Collins scored for the ‘Jacks in the shot put at the outdoor championships before earning a chance to compete at the west preliminary round. He also finished fifth in the shot put at the indoor championships. The throws team is joined by new coach Nathan Ott. Ott came to the ‘Jacks from Texas State where he coached their throws team for one year. Prior to that, he was a coach and student athlete at Southern Utah University. Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Eric Heins was recently named Big Sky Coach of the Year for the 24th and 25th times when the ‘Jacks swept the Big Sky Cross Country Championships.

ERIC HEINS EIGHTH SEASON - CINCINATTI '99 1st Season State ‘92 Eric Heins enters his eighth season as the director • of Arizona the Northern Arizona’s national recognized track & field and cross country programs. Over his first seven seasons, he has elevated both programs to new heights within the conference - winning 14 titles - and several national finishes. This past fall, Lumberjack men’s and women’s cross country swept the Big Sky Conference, giving the men their eighthstraight conference title and the women their first since 2009. The men went on to finish fourth at the NCAA Championships, their third-straight podium finish. In his seven years since returning to Flagstaff, Heins has been named Coach of the Year by the Big Sky Conference 25 times, including five honors from the 2013-14 seasons thanks to the Lumberjack men’s sixth triple crown in school and Big Sky Conference history and a sweep of the track & field championships by the Lumberjack women. Heins was also honored as the Mountain Region Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in 2010. Heins’ group was dominant in the Big Sky during the track & field season. The Lumberjack men and women swept both the indoor and outdoor championships. The outdoor championship was won in Flagstaff, the first time the Lumberjack women have won the outdoor championship since 2006. The track & field season was highlighted by All-American performances by Brian Shrader during the indoor season and Caleb Hoover during the outdoor season. A total of 18 athletes competed at the NCAA National Championships during the track & field season. This past fall, the NAU cross country squads under Heins’ direction had successful seasons across the board. The NAU men’s squad made history with their record seventh-consecutive Big Sky Championship, and ninth-consecutive individual title. The Lumberjack men finished second in the country led by All-American performances by Futsum Zienasellassie, Matt McElroy and Brian Shrader. During the 2013 season, Heins led the men’s team to Big Sky crowns cranking out 143.5 at the indoor championship held in Bozeman, Mont., and putting up 143 at the outdoor meet in Forest Grove, Ore. Heins’ men’s mid-distance group took home a total of six individual Big Sky titles during the indoor and outdoor seasons.

The women’s track and field teams, under Heins’ direction, finished third at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships and sixth at the indoor meet during the 2013 season. Rolonda Jumbo finished second in the women’s 10,000 meter run during her freshman campaign at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. In addition, Rochelle Kanuho finished third in the women’s 5,000 meter run at the Big Sky Indoor Championships. The Lumberjacks thrived in Heins’ first full season as Director of Track and Field. Diego Estrada led the group with a pair of top-10 finishes at the indoor and outdoor national meets in the 5,000-meter run. Heins’ leadership also produced a collective six Big Sky Conference individual titles, including two from Estrada. In the fall of 2010, NAU’s cross country teams were a powerful presence and one of the premier programs in the country. In his fourth season as head coach of cross country, Heins produced a fourth consecutive conference title on the men’s side, and coached an injury-depleted women’s squad to a respectable fifth-place finish in the same meet. At the national meet, the Lumberjack men placed ninth behind All-America performances from Estrada and Ahmed Osman. For his efforts, Heins earned his seventh coach of the year honor from the Big Sky Conference. Serving as the Interim Director of Track and Field, the 2010 track and field campaign under Heins’ direction saw the program collect its first national champion in three seasons, as David McNeill won both the indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter run titles. Under the direction of Heins, McNeill rewrote the record books at NAU in both the indoor and outdoor 5Ks, as well as giving the program its highest finish (T-8) when he scored 18 points at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. The 2009 cross country campaign was historic for the program as the season culminated with the men’s team finishing fourth overall at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Heins coached McNeill to his third-straight All-American award as he finished runner-up in the race. Jordan Chipangama finished fifth to give the Lumberjacks their first ever duo to finish in the top five at the NCAA Championships. Veronica Pohl, the lone member of the women’s team to run in Terre Haute, Ind., landed her second-consecutive All-Ameri-

LUMBERJACK TRACK AND FIELD The combination of top finishes at the cross country and track and field championships by the men’s team during 2009-10, yielded the Lumberjacks a third-place finish in the final standings for the NCAA Division I John McDonnell Program of the Year Award awarded by the USTFCCCA. In 2008-09, the men’s cross country team finished sixth at the NCAA Championships, while the women finished 23rd overall in posting their second consecutive top 25 finish. The men’s sixth-place finish at the 2008 NCAA Championships marked just the second time in NAU history that the Lumberjacks have posted back-to-back top-six finishes. They were led by McNeill (15th overall) and Pohl (16th overall), who were both named to their respective All-American teams. McNeill was named Mountain Region Male Athlete of the Year, capturing the region title to keep the title in the program for the second straight year. Both the men and women also captured Big Sky Conference championships for the second consecutive season in 2008, as McNeill and Pohl were crowned individual champions. The men placed six runners in the top-10, scoring just 19 points, while the women had three top-ten finishers. The 2009 indoor and outdoor track seasons produced three Big Sky team championships led by a strong distance group. McNeill ran to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships in the 5000m, while Ahmed Osman earned All-America honors in the 10,000m. Pohl, Diego Estrada and Nell Rojas also advanced to the NCAA Championships. Heins was hired in September 2007 and in two months time his teams were making history in Terre Haute, Ind. The men’s team finished fourth and the women’s team took seventh at the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championships, to mark the first time in the storied history of the NAU cross country program that both teams have finished in the top eight nationally. Heins produced three All-Americans in his rookie year at NAU. Lopez Lomong finished third at the championships, with McNeill taking 10th to garner national honors. On the women’s side, Heins coached Ilsa Paulson to All-American status on the merit of her national finish. Nine of Heins’ runners were named to the All-Conference team, as well as seven to the 2007 All-Region team. Lomong, who won the Big Sky and Mountain Region titles in 2007, went on to make the United States Olympic team in 2008 in the 1500m and represented his country as the flag bearer in the opening ceremonies in Beijing.

Back on the track, Heins coached McNeill (1,500m, 5,000m), Ben Ashkettle (steeplechase), and Lesley van Miert (1,500m) to conference championships in the 2008 outdoor season. McNeill and van Miert would advance to the NCAA Championships, where McNeill would finish fourth (13:42.17) and van Miert would take ninth (16:20.66) in their respective 5,000m finals. Academically, the cross country teams have received the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award five times under his direction while 20 student-athletes have earned a combined 26 Big Sky All-Academic honors. McNeill was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team in 2009 and 2010. His first women’s team was given the honor of being named an Academic All-American team, based on their combined grade point average of 3.42 in the fall semester. Heins returned to NAU from Texas Christian University, where he served as an assistant during the 2006-07 season. In his only season with the TCU Frogs, he took both the men’s and women’s teams to top 10 finishes at the NCAA South Central Regional. In addition, he saw five of his runners honored as Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athletes. From 2001-03, Heins served as an assistant for the Lumberjacks under then-Head Coach Ron Mann. During his first tenure, the men’s team finished as high as fourth place at the NCAA Championships, while the women took home a 10th place finish. From there Heins went to Southeast Missouri State, where he spent three years coaching the Redhawks to six different Ohio Valley Conference Championships. Heins, who began his coaching career as an assistant in 2000 at Indiana, ran for Cincinnati from 1995-99, while earning his bachelor’s degree in health promotion and education. At the 1997 Indoor Conference USA Championships, he achieved his highest individual accomplishment by placing third in the 3000 meters. He also notched top 10 finishes in both the indoor and outdoor 5,000 meters, as well as the outdoor 10,000 meters. In 2001, Heins earned a master’s in kinesiology from Indiana. In November 2007 he competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon in New York, N.Y. Other accolades include winning the St. Louis Marathon in 2004 and placing first in his age group, and fifth overall, in the 2000 Marine Corps Marathon.

For returning the men’s and women’s Big Sky Championships to Flagstaff in 2007, Heins was selected as the Big Sky Cross Country Coach of the Year for both teams.

LEAH ROSENFELD THIRD SEASON - PENN STATE '10 Leah Rosenfeld enters her third year at Northern Arizona and her second as an assistant coach with the Lumberjacks. The former Penn State student-athlete focuses primarily on the women’s distance team. She also assists in recruiting, coordinating team travel, and managing the team blog and newsletter. During her second season, Rolonda Jumbo was an NCAA Cross Country Championships qualifier. In her third season, the Lumberjack women won their first Big Sky Championship since 2009 and Melanie Townsend qualified for the national championships. Rosenfeld was instrumental in helping to develop both the women’s and men’s teams during the 2012-13 season. The women’s team improved dramatically and the men’s team won the Big Sky Conference championship and finished the season ranked fourth in the nation. Prior to coming to NAU, Rosenfeld worked with the cross country and track and field teams of Syracuse University as a volunteer assistant coach. During the 2011 cross country season both the men’s and women’s teams won the Northeast Region Championship, punching their tickets to NCAAs where they finished 15th and 17th, respectively. Under the guidance of coaches Chris Fox and Brian Bell, Rosenfeld helped with recruiting and facilitating workouts for specific distance and middle distance groups. She also collaborated with Syracuse’s academic coordinators to ensure athletes’ compliance with NCAA academic requirements. Rosenfeld, a Ridgefield, Conn. native, participated in cross country and indoor and outdoor track for the Nittany Lions from 2006-2010. She graduated from Penn State in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in communication with a concentration in media studies and kinesiology. Upon graduating in 2010, she pursued her coaching career as an assistant coach at Lodi High School in Lodi, California. During her time coaching the Lodi Flames,Rosenfeld helped design workouts and racing schedules, as well as circuit training and drill routines. She was also influential in getting student-athletes recruited to Division I universities. In the 2010 cross country season she coached the women’s team to their eighth straight League Champion-

ship and individual champion in Cassidy Daley. In February 2011, Rosenfeld helped Daley to run at the USA Cross Country Championships and Junior Olympics, where she placed 11th and earning All-American honors. During her time at Penn State, Leah received All-Region honors with a 14th place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Regional meet in 2007. Having a breakout sophomore year, Rosenfeld was a point-scorer at the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships in the mile and then ran an NCAA provisional qualifying 4:45.46 at the Alex Wilson Invitational. Around the outdoor track, she scored points for the Nittany Lions at the Big Ten Championships in the 5,000 meters with a regional-qualifying time of 16:45 and nabbed a regional qualifier in the 1500 meters with a personal best time of 4:24.62 in the prelims, placing her on Penn State’s Top 10 all-time 1500 meter record board. She was a member of the 4x1500 meter relay at Penn Relays, setting a school record of 17:57.28. On the cross country course during her junior year, Rosenfeld earned medalist honors at the Iona Meet of Champions at Van Cortland Park in New York City, leading her team to a first place finish. During her senior year in 2010, Penn State won its first triple crown in school history, winning the Big Ten Championships in cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. In addition to running, Rosenfeld was heavily involved in the student-athlete services at Penn State. She was the Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) representative for the cross country and track and field teams her junior and senior years. She also demonstrated great leadership as the Fundraising Chair for SAAB, managing 800 varsity student-athletes at Penn State. Rosenfeld is currently working toward a master’s degree in educational leadership.

KENNY MCDANIEL THIRD SEASON - PITTSBURGH STATE '99 Kenny McDaniel begins his third season as an assistant track and field coach at Northern Arizona University. He joined the Northern Arizona program after five seasons as an assistant at Arizona State. He works with the men’s and women’s sprinters and hurdlers, bringing his energetic and passionate approach to helping the student-athletes in the Lumberjack program.

women’s sprint, hurdle and relay student-athletes improved under his direction while challenging for conference and national titles. Overall, he coached 12 women to a combined 43 All-America honors during his time at Arizona State, including two-time NCAA Champion Jacquelyn Johnson. She won the NCAA title in the pentathlon and heptathlon in 2008 before competing in the Olympics in Beijing.

McDaniel’s second season was more than impressive. Over the course of both the indoor and outdoor seasons McDaniel’s sprinters took home a total of six gold medals. Under McDaniel’s guidance Vernon Jamison swept the men’s hurdles conference titles winning both the 60m and 110m hurdles. Jamison improved from 14.25 to 13.90 in the 110 hurdles and 8.01 to 7.88 in the 60m hurdles during the 2014 outdoor season. On the women’s side, both Darriel Banks and Shamelle Pless showed huge improvements. Banks took home the gold in the 60m dash at the Big Sky Indoor Championships after running a career-best and school record 7.39. Pless was a gold medalist in the 200m dash running a career-best and school record 23.86 at the conference meet. The men’s 4x400 relay team also improved dramatically this year taking home gold at the indoor conference meet and bronze at the outdoor conference meet. McDaniel also guided freshmen Ashley Taylor to a conference title in the 400m hurdles who also qualified for the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships this past summer. Taylor improved her 400iH times from 60.38 to 58.65 a mark that also qualified for the NCAA West Regional championships.

Prior to his arrival in Tempe, McDaniel spent three seasons (2005-07) coaching the men’s and women’s sprints, hurdles and relays at CS Fullerton and guided six individuals one relay to Big West titles. His athletes also reset 14 total school records. During his tenure, he guided 25 student-athletes to the NCAA West Region meet, including two relays and seven individuals in 2007.

During McDaniel’s first season with the Lumberjack program he had an immediate impact on the sprinters squad. McDaniel coached senior Miles di Sabella to a Big Sky Outdoor Championship title in the 200m with a winning time of 21.23. On the women’s side, junior Shemelle Pless made the largest improvement in the short dashes lowering her times from 12.29 to 11.84 in the 100m and 25.08 to 24.08 in the 200m. Following close to her was Isatu Fofanah who improved her times from 11.88 to 11.63 in the 100m and 24.20 to 23.77 in the 200m. Also during McDaniel’s first season he guided junior Darriel Banks to a time of 11.63 in the 100m and 23.80 in the 200m on the way to qualifying for the first round NCAA Championships.

McDaniel’s first coaching job came in 2000 as he was hired to coach the men’s and women’s sprints, hurdles and relays at San Francisco State. While with the Gators (2000-04), his student-athletes accounted for three school records while a pair of sprinters qualified in the 100m and 200m dash at the NCAA Division II Championships. His student-athletes also garnered 10 total All-CCAA honors. Before taking his position at SFSU, McDaniel served as a student assistant coach (2000) at his alma mater, Pittsburgh State University in Pittsburgh, Kan. A 1999 graduate with a degree in General Studies with an emphasis in Kinesiology and Nutrition, McDaniel competed for two years. In 1997, he earned AllMIAA accolades in the indoor 55m hurdles as well as both the 110m high hurdles and the 400m hurdles during the outdoor season. McDaniel opened his collegiate career in 1995 at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, where he competed for one year. That year, the Buccaneers captured the 1995 NJCAA title before the school discontinued the program. McDaniel transferred to Kansas City Community College in Kansas City, Kan., for his sophomore season and earned All-America honors. A native of Longview, Texas, and graduate of Longview HS, McDaniel attained his USATF Level II Sprints and Hurdles certification in the summer of 2006.

NATHAN OTT FIRST SEASON - SOUTHERN UTAH '06 Nathan Ott joins the Northern Arizona track and field coaching staff as an assistant coach for throws. Ott joins the Lumberjacks after one season as the throws coach for Texas State and six seasons at his alma mater, Southern Utah. At Texas State, Ott coached one national qualifier, four west preliminary qualifiers and eight Sunbelt Conference Champions. He also had athletes break records in the men’s indoor and outdoor shot put, weight throw and hammer throw – which was set and reset by two different athletes – and the women’s weight throw. At Southern Utah, Ott coached 19 conference champions, 11 NCAA Regional qualifiers and one All-American. Under his tenure, the Thunderbird throwers broke 13 school records, posted 142 top 10 marks and boasted three team

MVPs. In 2013, Ott coached Kayla Kovar to an indoor Big Sky Championship in the shot put and a Most Outstanding Performer honor. In total, Kovar notched six conference championships under Ott’s coaching. She also holds school records in the indoor and outdoor shot put, weight throw, discus and is second all-time in the hammer throw. As a student-athlete at Southern Utah, Ott set the school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 201-05. He won the Mid-Continent Conference Championship for the hammer throw in 2007 and was the team’s leading scorer in 2006. He was also a two-time NCAA West Regional qualifier.

AARON IAUN SECOND SEASON - EASTERN ILLINOIS '11 Aaron Iaun found succes in his first year as a Graduate Assistant at Northern Arizona University where he will serve as an assistant for the Cross Country and Track and Field programs. Iaun was an assistant on the No. 2 men’s cross country team in the land during his first year at NAU. During the track & field season Iaun was instrumental in the development of a number of NAU’s distance athletes that were very valuable to the Lumberjacks ability to sweep Big Sky titles on both the men’s and women’s side. Iaun joins the NAU staff after serving as a volunteer assistant with the cross country and track and field teams at the University of Iowa. Iaun also graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Sports Studies from Eastern Illinois University (EIU) in 2011. Iaun interned with the EIU

Track coaching staff and the Indiana Invaders Track Club following recieving his bachelors degree. During his time at EIU, Iaun was a member of the track and cross country teams, winning four conference championships during his career all while being a non-scholarship athlete. Iaun was awarded EIU’s most improved runner award in 2008 and was the recipient of the Walt Crawford Memorial distance running scholarship in that same year. Iaun is a native of Springfield. IL... JADE ELLIS SECOND SEASON - DUKE '09 Jade Ellis enters his second season with the NAU Track and Field program as a graduate assistant.

In his first season with the Lumberjacks, Ellis coached five Big Sky Champions during the indoor and outdoor season.

Ellis joins the NAU staff after coaching the jumpers at The University of Michigan for the past two years. Ellis graduated with a bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree from Duke University in 2009. During his time at Duke he was a member of the track and field team. Ellis was a NCAA qualifying long and triple jumper while at Duke. Ellis was a Junior All-American, placing fourth at the Junior Pan-Ams long jump event in 2005 and won the ACC long jump championship during his senior year in 2009.

Under the leadership of Ellis, Deante Kemper broke both the indoor and outdoor school records in the high jump. Lauren Laszczak also improved under his guidance as she cleared a lifetime-best 6-0 during the indoor season, second-best in school history. Kemper and Laszczak swept the Big Sky high jump titles during the indoor and outdoor season in addition to competing at the NCAA Track & Field Championship Final during the outdoor and indoor season, respectively. Arizona University

Northern Arizona University provides an outstanding undergraduate residential education strengthened by important research, graduate and professional programs, and a responsive distance learning network delivering programs throughout Arizona. Located at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is 140 miles north of Phoenix at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40. With its elevation of 7,000 feet and a four-season climate, Flagstaff is ideal for year-round outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include the Grand Canyon, Lowell Observatory, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Monument Valley, Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, and Arizona Snowbowl.

UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT DR. RITA CHENG Meet NAU’s 16th president, Dr. Rita Cheng During Dr. Rita Cheng’s first visit to campus, her speech before a standing room only crowd left little room for doubt about the kind of president she would be for Northern Arizona University. “I have always believed I have a responsibility to help others through service,” she said. “I firmly believe we have an obligation to give back, and I try to live by that value.” Cheng was unanimously appointed by the Arizona Board of Regents to be the next NAU president when John Haeger steps down later this summer. Her three-year contract began Aug. 15. Cheng, who was chancellor at Southern Illinois University, opened her that first on campus presentation by saying she was “humbled and honored” to be considered for the presidency, acknowledging that NAU’s upward trajectory—much to the credit of President Haeger—was no secret nationally and had been noticed by her from afar. Visiting in person only confirmed that view, she said. “At the heart of it all resides a talented faculty and staff that makes it possible.” The incoming president spent a recent whirlwind first official visit on June 12 meeting with campus administrative and faculty leadership. Throughout her engaging presentation in a jam-packed Ashurst Auditorium, Cheng laid out the vision and values that define her, and offered glimpses into the early life experiences that drive her to succeed. During a 17-minute presentation to hundreds in Ashurst and hundreds more watching online, Cheng explained how growing up on a farm in Wisconsin taught her “the value of hard work and doing what you have committed to do—being authentic and true to your goals.” Cheng’s own journey through higher education, raising a family and negotiating a steadily rising career reinforced beliefs she exudes as a university leader today, with an appreciation that she moved into expanding horizons for women and first-generation students. “I have always believed I have a responsibility to help others through service,” she said. Candidly, Cheng simply posed the question she correctly presumed was on everyone’s mind: “What kind of president might I be?” In answering, Cheng shared “the values I bring to all I do.” An accountant by training, she acknowl-

edged the role of data in making informed decisions, but said “numbers alone cannot answer the human questions. To answer those questions, a leader needs to hear from all the very human stakeholders in the university’s future.” Themes of shared governance, transparency, communication, accountability and inclusiveness followed. She noted her support for a strong, academically focused athletics program, but also emphasized, “music, art, theater, distinguished speakers, and other cultural and recreational activities that contribute to the vibrancy of our campus.” Cheng turned to the citizens of Flagstaff by saying the university must define communities broadly rather than narrowly. “We must view ourselves as part of something much greater than ourselves. We cannot isolate, we must invite people in, we must go outside our walls.” Before moving to SIU, Cheng spent 22 years in teaching and administrative roles at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, including five years as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Cheng, who was also a professor of accounting at SIU, earned her Ph.D. in management from the Fox School of Business and Management at Temple University. She earned her MBA degree from the University of Rhode Island and a bachelor of business administration degree with honors from Bishop‘s University in Quebec. A 28-member search committee of ABOR members, NAU faculty and staff, and community, business, tribal and educational leaders contributed to the decision to choose Cheng. The new NAU president joins the ABOR Enterprise Executive Committee, comprised of the presidents of Arizona State University, NAU, the University of Arizona, and ABOR as the executive leadership of the Arizona public university enterprise system responsible for driving achievement of statewide goals. “Dr. Cheng’s impressive career in higher education and her transformative leadership will advance NAU to even greater heights, enable the achievement of the university’s ambitious goals, and foster enhanced student success,” said ABOR chair Rick Myers, who served as co-chair of the hiring committee. “This is the beginning of a legacy that will serve the entire state.”

In her first year at NAU, Campos guided the Lumberjacks to the prestigious Presidents’ Cup as the NAU Athletics Department was recognized for their overall excellence in competition and in the classroom. The Lumberjacks finished first in overall athletic points and tied for second in overall academic performance as they became the fourth institution to win multiple Presidents’ Cups, winning their second Presidents’ Cup (first was 2005-06). NAU also claimed the 2013-14 Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Trophy; the first true sweep by an institution since 2000-01. The Lumberjacks captured five team championships, with an additional eight teams finishing in the top five. The success on and off the field continues, and over the past two years, Campos saw her department capture 52 total conference championships. Most recently during the 2013-14, six teams – men’s cross country and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field all captured Big Sky Championships while women’s swimming & diving won its first Western Athletic Conference Championships – and 19 student-athletes combined for 24 individual titles between cross country and track & field in the Big Sky and swimming & diving in the WAC. Beyond championships, the Lumberjacks produced 183 all-conference honorees and 13 student-athletes that combined for 18 All-American honors. In the classroom, the Lumberjacks once again proved that academics is at the forefront of the student-athlete experience as NAU finished with a department-wide 3.125 cumulative GPA. Ten of 13 teams finished the 2012-13 academic year with a GPA of at least 3.00 led by the volleyball team, who recorded a 3.57 GPA, followed by swimming & diving at 3.50 and soccer at 3.42. Two student-athletes received CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District honors, one of which was named a CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American First Team honoree. NAU had 139 total student-athletes earn All-Academic honors by the Big Sky and WAC. A total of 58 student-athletes earned their degrees during the 2013-14 academic year. All 15 sponsored sports exceeded NCAA academic standards for the fifth consecutive year as the department posted an overall APR of 973. Nine squads carried multi-year totals above 960, while six teams accomplished perfect single-year scores of 1000 led by the women’s tennis and swimming & diving teams who received the APR Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for earning a perfect single-year APR each of the last four years. Campos and the Lumberjacks continue to give back to the community as her student-athletes completed the most community service hours ever in department history. The Lumberjacks’ set a goal of 4,000 hours for the 2013-14 academic year – they eclipsed the mark with an instrumental 4,378 hours. Campos made four coaching hires, changing the culture of NAU basketball with the hires of Jack Murphy from the University of Memphis to lead the Lumberjack men’s team and Sue Darling from the University of Arizona to head the women’s squad. In her second year, she hired two coaches away from Conference USA. Ken Murphy from the University of Texas-El Paso was named to guide the volleyball program, and, from Southern Mississippi, Ki Kroll was hired to lead the men’s tennis program. Campos took over the leadership of the Lumberjack Athletics department after serving as the Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of Texas at El Paso since August of 2006. With her hiring at NAU, Campos, 35, became one of 26 females and the youngest in the country to lead a Division I program, including 13 head athletic administrators at the Football Championship Subdivision level. Campos served as the sport administrator for the Miner men’s and women’s cross country, women’s soccer, women’s volley-

ball, women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s track and field programs at UTEP. Campos also was the primary administrator for compliance, CHAMPS/Life Skills, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, and cheerleading. She was the advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and served as the liaison to the Intercollegiate Athletic Council, Office of Student Life, Miner Village, and the UTEP Police Department. In her tenure at UTEP, she also had oversight of the women’s golf, rifle, and softball programs, served as championship director for numerous conference championships, and co-hosted a weekly television show, Miner Sports Weekly. Dr. Campos also assisted with athletic facility enhancements and co-directed the planning and design of the $2.6 million Helen of Troy Softball Complex, which opened in September 2005. In 2006, Campos served as the NCAA liaison for the Self Study Report for NCAA Certification and continued to oversee all gender, minority equity, and student welfare strategic plans. She was responsible for Title IX staff education and staff diversity training. In 2005, she created the Athletics Diversity Graduate Assistantship Program and served on the UTEP Women’s Resource Advisory Board. She was promoted to the Senior Associate position after serving as the Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator since August of 2003. She also served two years as the Assistant Dean of Students within the UTEP Division of Student Affairs. Dr. Campos had the opportunity to serve on a number of NCAA Committees, including the NCAA Division I Championships/ Competition Cabinet, the NCAA Rifle Committee, and chaired the NCAA Women’s Soccer Committee. She was a member of the Conference USA Joint Group and served on the Senior Woman Administrator administrative group. In 2005-2006, when UTEP joined Conference USA, she served on the Conference USA Strategic Planning Committee and assisted in the development of the realigned Conference USA’s vision, core values, mission, and strategic objectives. She also represented UTEP on conference committees, including the budget subcommittee, legislative committee, championships selection committee, and various sport committees. Dr. Campos previously served as the Assistant Dean of Students at UTEP from 2001-03. Campos coordinated and administered the university’s student discipline system, interpreted the University of Texas System Regents’ Rules and Regulations governing the student academic honesty and conduct code, and provided information to the university community on discipline policies, rules, regulations, and procedures. She served as a mentor to an undergraduate student participating in the NASPA Minority Undergraduate Fellows Program and served on a variety of campus committees including the UTEP President’s Advisory Committee on Women, Student Affairs Staff Development Committee, Faculty Senate Student Conduct Committee, and the University Health Awareness Committee. In the community, Campos was a member of the Girl Scouts of the Rio Grande board and the Junior League of El Paso. Dr. Campos holds a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Texas at El Paso. She graduated from Colorado State University where she earned a bachelor’s of science degree in Business Administration and a master’s of science degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education. Campos is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA), National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) and Flagstaff Leadership Program. A native of Las Animas, Colo., Campos is married to Darren D’Attilio. They live in Flagstaff with their son, Christopher.
