Individual athletes may be requested through the Athletics Communications office also. INTERVIEW POLICY All player interviews must be coordinated through the Athletics Communications office at least one day in advance. No interviews or photo shoots will be conducted on days prior to tournaments. Out-of-town media should contact the Athletics Communications office to make arrangements for phone interviews. The NAU locker room and training room are closed. BEDORTHA INTERVIEWS Brad Bedortha is generally available for interviews upon request. MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME Arizona does not move its clock ahead in the spring or back in the fall. As a result, Flagstaff time coincides with the Pacific time zone through Nov. 1. 2014 SEASON COACHING STAFF THE LUMBERJACKS SEASON REVIEW HISTORY

This season, Northern Arizona women’s golf looks to improve upon their inconsistent performance from 2013-14. The Lumberjacks lost two from their roster last year, All-Big Sky Kaitlen Parsons and Melissa Olsen. From its fifth-place championship roster, they retain all but Parsons. Parsons – who contributed to the team score in 115 of 118 rounds she played in – leaves a hole to be filled by a number of top returners. Senior Jacquie LeMarr transferred to Northern Arizona at the beginning of the spring campaign in 2014 and was immediately a top performer for the ‘Jacks. Her highlights include a tie for third (73-75-74) at the Rio Verde Invitational and a win at the Red Rocks Invitational with a season best two-round total of 141 (70-71). Senior Brittany McKee also transferred to Northern Arizona for the 201314 season. She opened the spring campaign with a win at the Grand Canyon Invitational with rounds of 73-75-76. “So far it’s been Brittany McKee that’s stepped up,” said Head Coach Brad Bedortha about replacing Parsons. “She has definitely taken the leadership role in regards to counting scores. I think there’s some other players that would slowly in time – hopefully not too slowly – will step up to push her as well.” Senior Susana Mejia followed Parsons at the Big Sky Championships in a tie for 12th with rounds of 79-75-77.

and participated in the PGA Champions Tour First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. Saum competed at the Girls Junior America Cup team and was a state runner-up. “With the three freshmen coming in it is going to be very competitive,” said Head Coach Brad Bedortha about his recruiting class. “The returners are really going to have to step up their game because I think they are really going to be pushed by the three freshmen. At the end of the day as a coach you want that competition because that helps everyone get better.” The ‘Jacks struggled in their first two tournaments of the 2014/15 season, finishing in 10th-place at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic and ninth at the Oregon State Invitational. In the third tournament of the year, the ‘Jacks showed improvement on every round, finishing fifth overall at the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate. They also led Big Sky competition at that tournament. “Last spring, we struggled in the last two tournaments and the first two tournaments this season. I definitely don’t think that’s an indication of our team,” said Bedortha. “I think we’re much better than we’ve showed so far. I like the team and they’re working hard. We just need to continue to work on the things we’ve been doing and continue to get better.” The ‘Jacks wrapped up their fall season with a second-place finish at the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational and LeMarr posted a second-place finish at that tournament.

Also returning for the Lumberjacks are Savana Bezdicek, Laura Jabczenski and JoJo Sotille.

“It was a good note to end the fall schedule on,” said Head Golf Coach Brad Bedortha following that tournament. “They played both rounds very well which give them the confidence to know that we have the ability put together rounds instead of just having one good round a tournament.”

Joining the team is transfer Kim Cifuentes from San Jose State who led the ‘Jacks at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic – the first tournament of 2014-15 season – and freshmen Sierra Bezdicek, Carly Akine and Kaitlyn Saum.

During the fall season, the ‘Jacks topped Northern Colorado, Montana State, North Dakota, Sacramento State and Eastern Washington at various tournaments.

Sierra Bezdicek – sister of Savana Bezdicek – led Mt. Spokane to its first state championship, was all-state for four years and was a four-time district champion. Akine was a Junior PGA Championship qualifier in 2012

BRAD BEDORTHA NINTH SEASON - FERRIS STATE '90 Brad Bedortha begins his eighth full season as the women’s golf coach at Northern Arizona University. He took over in mid-semester during the spring of 2008, coaching the program over the final three tournaments of the season.

The 2013-14 season had ups and downs as the ‘Jacks had several strong performances such as winning the Grand Canyon Invitational in February and following that up with a second-place finish at the Red Rocks Invitational. Brittany McKee and Jacquie LeMarr both posted individual tournament wins. LeMarr and Kaitlen Parsons were also named Big Sky All-Conference.

The 2011-12 season was another strong one as Bedortha’s group was a major contendor in the conference championship race. NAU finished third in the conference led by Kaitlen Parsons seventh place finish. NAU also had two athletes in Stephanie Kim and Parsons garner All-Big Sky honors.

Bedortha led the Lumberjacks to Big Sky titles in 2009 and 2013. Under Bedortha’s guidance NAU has won a total of 14 tournaments, in addition to two appearances at the NCAA regional level. NAU has garnered 21 All-Big Sky honors since his arrival in Flagstaff.

The 2012-13 season was highlighted by a Big Sky Championship and three All-Big Sky selections. Bedortha led NAU to two tournament wins at the Rio Verde Invitational and the other coming at the Big Sky Championships. Savana Bezdicek won two individual titles at the Rio Verde and Cal Poly invitationals on her way to a Big Sky Freshman of the Year honor. Bedortha was also awarded Big Sky Coach of the Year for the second time of his career.

The Lumberjacks won a school-record tying four tournaments in 2010-11, setting the individual single round and team tournament scoring marks during the season. NAU shot a seven-over par 871 at the Lumberjack Shootout at Wigwam, posting rounds of 287292-292 to break the three-round tournament school record by 26 strokes.The previous mark of 897 came at the 2010 Wyoming Cowgirl Invitational. All three rounds ranked among the top 10 single-round performances in school history and the opening round 287 was the second-best round in the record books. NAU finished second at the 2011 Big Sky Conference Championships. The Lumberjacks’ three-round total of 891 was the fourth-best team score in tournament history and second lowest non-winning score. Sophomore Stephanie Kim was named the

Big Sky Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Senior Alexa Kim was chosen for the All-Big Sky first-team and senior Bethany Leclair was an All-Big Sky second team selection. Leclair was the top finisher at the Big Sky Championships in second after recording a school-record five-under par 67 in the final round. Stephanie Kim broke the single season scoring record for the second consecutive season, helping the Lumberjacks win four tournaments: the Circling Raven Collegiate Invitational, the Cal Poly Lamkin Grip Women’s Invitational, the Red Rocks Invitational and the Lumberjack Shootout at Wigwam. The four tournament titles ties the school record for wins in a season set in 2009-10. NAU also won four team tournament titles in 2009-10, setting a new school record. The Lumberjacks also broke the single-, two- and three-round team, as well the single-season school records this season. The Lumberjacks shattered the team individual round school record with a three-under par 285 in the first round of the Grand Canyon Invitational, finishing with a two-day total of 580 to break the two-round mark of 584 set at the 1998 Lumberjack Invitational. The previous single-round record was 291 set at the 2002 Lumberjack Invitational, while the two-round mark was set at 584 at the 1998 Lumberjack Invitational. In the final regular season tournament, NAU broke the 54-hole mark by eclipsing the 900-stroke barrier for the first time in school history with an 897 at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic. The Lumberjacks averaged a school-best 304.5 strokes per round Freshman Stephanie Kim was chosen the Big Sky Player of the Year and the Big Sky Freshman of the Year, the first golfer in league history to win both honors in the same season. She won the 2010 Big Sky Championship with a school-record tying 54hole total of 216. She posted rounds of 69-70-77 to claim the title by four strokes over teammate Megan Buck, who carded a career-best 220 over the three rounds. In his first full season, Bedortha led the Lumberjacks to their first Big Sky Conference title since 2002 and the fourth NCAA Regional in school history, earning Big Sky Coach of the Year honors in 2009. Senior Ali Carter was named to the All-Big Sky first team for the third time in her career, while Alexa Kim and Leclair were named to the second team. NAU also reset history at the Wyoming Cowgirl tournament, winning the event for the second time in three seasons. Leclair tied the then-school record with a three-under par 69 in the

The Lumberjacks had immediate success under his tutelage to finish the 2008 season, winning the Big Sky Conference Preview and finishing second at the Big Sky Conference Championships by two strokes to champion Portland State. Carter was the runner-up at the championships after earning medalist honors at the Preview.

A native of Oregon, Bedortha worked at various golf clubs prior to joining the Ferris State staff including Bend Golf and Country Club and Sunriver Resort in Oregon, Desert Mountain Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Deer Run Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio. He also worked with the Madison Golf Development Group.

Senior Sophia Choi, who finished fifth at the Big Skys, posted a school-record tying three-under par 69 to lead NAU to a season-best 295 at the NCAA West Regional Preview one month earlier in the first tournament with Bedortha. Choi‘s round was a collegiate-best by two strokes, tying Lauren Gray’s 69 recorded in the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in 2001. She was named Big Sky Player of the Year, earning all-tournament honors along with Carter.

A 1990 graduate of Ferris State’s Professional Golf Management program, Bedortha returned to his alma mater in March 2000 after serving as the assistant golf professional at the Bend Golf and Country Club in Bend, Ore. He was an all-conference golfer as an undergraduate at Ferris and helped the Bulldogs win league titles in 1988 and 1989 under coach Ron English. A threeyear FSU letterwinner, Bedortha recorded a career 79.9 stroke average and posted a personal career-best 78.0 average for the 1988 season.

Bedortha had served as the head men’s and women’s coach at Division II Ferris State University in Michigan beginning in 2000. He was named the Division II National Coach of the Year after leading his women’s team to a fourth-place national finish in 2005. Overall, he led five Ferris State women’s teams into the national championships, finishing second in both 2004 and 2006 and third in 2007.

Bedortha presently holds membership in the Professional Golfers Association of America and the National Golf Association. He’s a three-time (2000-01, 2002-03 and 2005-06) GLIAC Coach of the Year honoree and received 2000-01 co-National Golf Coaches Association NCAA Division II East Region Coach of the Year accolades. In the 2002-03 season, Bedortha was the recipient of the NGCA’s East Region Coach of the Year Award.

Ferris State’s 2006-07 season success followed on the heels of the greatest season in the program’s history as Bedortha coached the 2005-06 team to a runner-up finish at the 2006 NCAA-II Women’s Golf Championships as the Bulldogs ended up six strokes behind the national champion. Nevertheless, the second-place performance on the national stage not only marked the highest placing ever in FSU women’s golf history but was the best finish in the history of women’s athletics at Ferris State. Bedortha paved the way for a pair of All-Americans as Elena Robles attained second-team recognition while Casey McKinnon was an honorable mention selection. Both tied for third place on the final individual leaderboard at the 2006 national tournament.

Bedortha is the fourth coach in the history of the program.

Bedortha helped the 2000-01 squad claim fifth place at the 2001 NCAA Championships in just his second season at Ferris State, which represented the program’s first national tournament appearance since 1994. Then following after a two-year absence, he mentored the 2003-04 NCAA-II East Regional champions in producing an impressive second-place tying effort at the 2004 NCAA-II Women’s Golf Championships. At the time, the runner-up tying finish was the highest-ever in the school’s women’s athletics program. Ferris would return to the national tournament the following year and place fourth in the 2005 event. During his tenure, Ferris State teams captured a combined six GLIAC Conference Championships and five NCAA Regional titles. He tutored four players to nine All-America honors and 12 to Academic All-America status. Twenty-two student-athletes earned all-conference honors, while 15 captured academic

Northern Arizona University provides an outstanding undergraduate residential education strengthened by important research, graduate and professional programs, and a responsive distance learning network delivering programs throughout Arizona. With its elevation of 7,000 feet and a four-season climate, Flagstaff is ideal for year-round outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include the Grand Canyon, Lowell Observatory, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Monument Valley, Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, and Arizona Snowbowl.

UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT DR. RITA CHENG Meet NAU’s 16th president, Dr. Rita Cheng During Dr. Rita Cheng’s first visit to campus, her speech before a standing room only crowd left little room for doubt about the kind of president she would be for Northern Arizona University. “I have always believed I have a responsibility to help others through service,” she said. “I firmly believe we have an obligation to give back, and I try to live by that value.” Cheng was unanimously appointed by the Arizona Board of Regents to be the next NAU president when John Haeger steps down later this summer. Her three-year contract began Aug. 15. Cheng, who was chancellor at Southern Illinois University, opened her that first on campus presentation by saying she was “humbled and honored” to be considered for the presidency, acknowledging that NAU’s upward trajectory—much to the credit of President Haeger—was no secret nationally and had been noticed by her from afar. Visiting in person only confirmed that view, she said. “At the heart of it all resides a talented faculty and staff that makes it possible.” The incoming president spent a recent whirlwind first official visit on June 12 meeting with campus administrative and faculty leadership. Throughout her engaging presentation in a jam-packed Ashurst Auditorium, Cheng laid out the vision and values that define her, and offered glimpses into the early life experiences that drive her to succeed. During a 17-minute presentation to hundreds in Ashurst and hundreds more watching online, Cheng explained how growing up on a farm in Wisconsin taught her “the value of hard work and doing what you have committed to do—being authentic and true to your goals.” Cheng’s own journey through higher education, raising a family and negotiating a steadily rising career reinforced beliefs she exudes as a university leader today, with an appreciation that she moved into expanding horizons for women and first-generation students. “I have always believed I have a responsibility to help others through service,” she said. Candidly, Cheng simply posed the question she correctly presumed was on everyone’s mind: “What kind of president might I be?” In answering, Cheng shared “the values I bring to all I do.” An accountant by training, she acknowl-

edged the role of data in making informed decisions, but said “numbers alone cannot answer the human questions. To answer those questions, a leader needs to hear from all the very human stakeholders in the university’s future.” Themes of shared governance, transparency, communication, accountability and inclusiveness followed. She noted her support for a strong, academically focused athletics program, but also emphasized, “music, art, theater, distinguished speakers, and other cultural and recreational activities that contribute to the vibrancy of our campus.” Cheng turned to the citizens of Flagstaff by saying the university must define communities broadly rather than narrowly. “We must view ourselves as part of something much greater than ourselves. We cannot isolate, we must invite people in, we must go outside our walls.” Before moving to SIU, Cheng spent 22 years in teaching and administrative roles at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, including five years as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Cheng, who was also a professor of accounting at SIU, earned her Ph.D. in management from the Fox School of Business and Management at Temple University. She earned her MBA degree from the University of Rhode Island and a bachelor of business administration degree with honors from Bishop‘s University in Quebec. A 28-member search committee of ABOR members, NAU faculty and staff, and community, business, tribal and educational leaders contributed to the decision to choose Cheng. The new NAU president joins the ABOR Enterprise Executive Committee, comprised of the presidents of Arizona State University, NAU, the University of Arizona, and ABOR as the executive leadership of the Arizona public university enterprise system responsible for driving achievement of statewide goals. “Dr. Cheng’s impressive career in higher education and her transformative leadership will advance NAU to even greater heights, enable the achievement of the university’s ambitious goals, and foster enhanced student success,” said ABOR chair Rick Myers, who served as co-chair of the hiring committee. “This is the beginning of a legacy that will serve the entire state.”

In her first year at NAU, Campos guided the Lumberjacks to the prestigious Presidents’ Cup as the NAU Athletics Department was recognized for their overall excellence in competition and in the classroom. The Lumberjacks finished first in overall athletic points and tied for second in overall academic performance as they became the fourth institution to win multiple Presidents’ Cups, winning their second Presidents’ Cup (first was 2005-06). NAU also claimed the 2013-14 Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Trophy; the first true sweep by an institution since 2000-01. The Lumberjacks captured five team championships, with an additional eight teams finishing in the top five. The success on and off the field continues, and over the past two years, Campos saw her department capture 52 total conference championships. Most recently during the 2013-14, six teams – men’s cross country and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field all captured Big Sky Championships while women’s swimming & diving won its first Western Athletic Conference Championships – and 19 student-athletes combined for 24 individual titles between cross country and track & field in the Big Sky and swimming & diving in the WAC. Beyond championships, the Lumberjacks produced 183 all-conference honorees and 13 student-athletes that combined for 18 All-American honors. In the classroom, the Lumberjacks once again proved that academics is at the forefront of the student-athlete experience as NAU finished with a department-wide 3.125 cumulative GPA. Ten of 13 teams finished the 2012-13 academic year with a GPA of at least 3.00 led by the volleyball team, who recorded a 3.57 GPA, followed by swimming & diving at 3.50 and soccer at 3.42. Two student-athletes received CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District honors, one of which was named a CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American First Team honoree. NAU had 139 total student-athletes earn All-Academic honors by the Big Sky and WAC. A total of 58 student-athletes earned their degrees during the 2013-14 academic year. All 15 sponsored sports exceeded NCAA academic standards for the fifth consecutive year as the department posted an overall APR of 973. Nine squads carried multi-year totals above 960, while six teams accomplished perfect single-year scores of 1000 led by the women’s tennis and swimming & diving teams who received the APR Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for earning a perfect single-year APR each of the last four years. Campos and the Lumberjacks continue to give back to the community as her student-athletes completed the most community service hours ever in department history. The Lumberjacks’ set a goal of 4,000 hours for the 2013-14 academic year – they eclipsed the mark with an instrumental 4,378 hours. Campos made four coaching hires, changing the culture of NAU basketball with the hires of Jack Murphy from the University of Memphis to lead the Lumberjack men’s team and Sue Darling from the University of Arizona to head the women’s squad. In her second year, she hired two coaches away from Conference USA. Ken Murphy from the University of Texas-El Paso was named to guide the volleyball program, and, from Southern Mississippi, Ki Kroll was hired to lead the men’s tennis program. Campos took over the leadership of the Lumberjack Athletics department after serving as the Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of Texas at El Paso since August of 2006. With her hiring at NAU, Campos, 35, became one of 26 females and the youngest in the country to lead a Division I program, including 13 head athletic administrators at the Football Championship Subdivision level. Campos served as the sport administrator for the Miner men’s and women’s cross country, women’s soccer, women’s volley-

ball, women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s track and field programs at UTEP. Campos also was the primary administrator for compliance, CHAMPS/Life Skills, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, and cheerleading. She was the advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and served as the liaison to the Intercollegiate Athletic Council, Office of Student Life, Miner Village, and the UTEP Police Department. In her tenure at UTEP, she also had oversight of the women’s golf, rifle, and softball programs, served as championship director for numerous conference championships, and co-hosted a weekly television show, Miner Sports Weekly. Dr. Campos also assisted with athletic facility enhancements and co-directed the planning and design of the $2.6 million Helen of Troy Softball Complex, which opened in September 2005. In 2006, Campos served as the NCAA liaison for the Self Study Report for NCAA Certification and continued to oversee all gender, minority equity, and student welfare strategic plans. She was responsible for Title IX staff education and staff diversity training. In 2005, she created the Athletics Diversity Graduate Assistantship Program and served on the UTEP Women’s Resource Advisory Board. She was promoted to the Senior Associate position after serving as the Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator since August of 2003. She also served two years as the Assistant Dean of Students within the UTEP Division of Student Affairs. Dr. Campos had the opportunity to serve on a number of NCAA Committees, including the NCAA Division I Championships/ Competition Cabinet, the NCAA Rifle Committee, and chaired the NCAA Women’s Soccer Committee. She was a member of the Conference USA Joint Group and served on the Senior Woman Administrator administrative group. In 2005-2006, when UTEP joined Conference USA, she served on the Conference USA Strategic Planning Committee and assisted in the development of the realigned Conference USA’s vision, core values, mission, and strategic objectives. She also represented UTEP on conference committees, including the budget subcommittee, legislative committee, championships selection committee, and various sport committees. Dr. Campos previously served as the Assistant Dean of Students at UTEP from 2001-03. Campos coordinated and administered the university’s student discipline system, interpreted the University of Texas System Regents’ Rules and Regulations governing the student academic honesty and conduct code, and provided information to the university community on discipline policies, rules, regulations, and procedures. She served as a mentor to an undergraduate student participating in the NASPA Minority Undergraduate Fellows Program and served on a variety of campus committees including the UTEP President’s Advisory Committee on Women, Student Affairs Staff Development Committee, Faculty Senate Student Conduct Committee, and the University Health Awareness Committee. In the community, Campos was a member of the Girl Scouts of the Rio Grande board and the Junior League of El Paso. Dr. Campos holds a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Texas at El Paso. She graduated from Colorado State University where she earned a bachelor’s of science degree in Business Administration and a master’s of science degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education. Campos is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA), National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) and Flagstaff Leadership Program. A native of Las Animas, Colo., Campos is married to Darren D’Attilio. They live in Flagstaff with their son, Christopher.
