#NAUSTRONG SEASON PREVIEW

NAU LUMBERJACK

2016-17

Gone are a total of 346 points of the Northern Arizona swimming & diving’s 2016 WAC Championship point total of 807.5. That equates to roughly 42.8 percent of NAU’s championship production that will be missing entering the 2016-17 season. Yet, do not expect the three-time defending conference champions to be deterred. “We lost a lot and we’re young and our depth is thin at some spots,” said head coach Andy Johns. “But we have great leadership with our senior class and our junior class is outstanding. Our newcomers are stepping right in and contributing right away.” A lot will be different with the ’Jacks this season, but with senior Alexa Geiger - the reigning WAC Diver of the Year - returning for her final season along with classmates Urte Kazakeviciute and Sara Lenhoff - who have combined for 20 all-conference honors NAU will be led by an accomplished senior class. The Lumberjacks also have the luxury of a junior class featuring Claire Hammond, Roni Houck, Audrey Mann, Kimmy Richter and Alina Staffeldt who combined for a whopping 263.5 points at the conference meet this past March. Add in sophomore diver Raquel Gonzales, who was the only Lumberjack to qualify for the top eight in all three diving events, and NAU might not be in as bad shape as it may appear. “We still have a great diving squad and a lot of top end talent here that can help us,” Johns said. “I believe we can still be a pretty good team.” There is no doubt that this year’s roster is full of fresh faces with nine newcomers among the 24-member squad, but the Lumberjacks are planning on a retool rather than a rebuild. An intense schedule featuring the likes of Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Oregon State and Washington State plus a swimming invitational to the Kansas Classic and NAU’s first ever Diving Invitational will prepare the team for the end of February. While many teams may shy away from such challenges, the ’Jacks will embrace them. The schedule will help them identify where the missing points will come from at the WAC Championships; and if all goes according to plan, the WAC trophy’s trip back to Flagstaff for the fourth time may be the sweetest of all.

SEASON PREVIEW FREESTYLE

“From the 50 to the mile, our freestylers are solid. We have a good mix of returners and newcomers. Roni Houck and Alina Staffeldt are leading the way in the 50 with Andrea Schmidt in the mix as well after scoring points at the conference meet. Fernanda Montiel, Allison Mann and Logan Neal will also add to that list and that same group moves up into the 100 where Claire Hammond starts to come into play. Claire and Kimmy Richter return in the 200 and as we move up further, Kimmy and Monique King will handle the longer distance races. Monique has a ton of accolades coming in from New Zealand, but Erin Spielman and Alice Hick will have shots to contribute especially at the 200 distance.” - Head Coach Andy Johns • Juniors Roni Houck and Alina Staffeldt will lead the team’s sprint freestyle crew. Houck is a two-time WAC bronze medalist in the 50 free and has also finished fourth in the 100 free as a freshman. Houck holds the fifth-best time in school history in the 50 free of 23.20. • Staffeldt is one spot ahead of Houck on the school leaderboard with a time of 23.15, which she clocked in the WAC prelims last season to eventually place fourth in the event. • At the 100 and 200 distances, junior Claire Hammond is the team’s top returner following an eighth-place finish in the 100 and a third-place finish in the 200 at the conference championships last season. Her times career-best times, both of which were set last season, in the 100 (50.94) and the 200 (1:49.39) both rank among the top five in NAU’s all-time performances. • Hammond, the WAC runner-up in the 500 free, will be joined by Kimmy Richter following her own fourth-place conference finish in the event last season. Richter also place fifth in the 200 free and will be counted on to continue the Lumberjacks’ strong tradition in the mile. Richter was the silver medalist behind only NAU alum Kendall Brown in 2016 in the 1,650 free. • Sophomore Andrea Schmidt could make a big leap as part of NAU’s sprint crew following a 10th place finish in the 50 in her fist

season. Junior Allison Mann and sophomore Logan Neal could also be counted on in the 50 and 100 among the team’s returners. • After one year at Massey University in her home country of New Zealand, sophomore Monique King is a potential big addition for the Lumberjacks. King, the winner of the team’s Pentathlon this season, could especially make an impact in the distance events after impressive performances at the 2015 World University Games. • Freshman Fernanda Montiel won gold in the 50 and 100 free at the Circuito Mexicano de Natacion meet this year is an addition to the sprint team. Freshmen Alice Hick and Erin Spielman were Arizona state qualifiers in the 100 and 200 during their prep careers.

HISTORY

SEASON REVIEW

BACKSTROKE “Sara Lenhoff is the leader and she shows up big at the conference meet. We’re going to look at Allison Mann to fill in here and she has the capability to do that. Fernanda Montiel is our newcomer in the backstroke and she has had some nice development in the last year. Last year, this was an area of depth for us and this year we’re a little thinner, but we’ll put up three great swimmers in dual meets and at the end of the year we’ll be right there too.” - Johns • Senior Sara Lenhoff looks to finally get over the hump in her final season after a series of near-misses for WAC gold over her career. Lenhoff has a second and a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 200 back, and a pair of third-place finishes and a seventh-place finish in the 100. She ranks second in both events all-time with times of 55.55 in the 100 and 1:59.26 in the 200. • As the only other Lumberjack with conference championship meet experience in the backstroke, Allison Mann is a big piece to the puzzle. Mann swam in the C final in both backstroke events as a freshman. • Montiel will also be counted on early in her career in the backstroke. She was a bronze medalist in both the 100 and 200 backstroke at the 2016 Circuito Mexicano de Natacion as well the 2015 Olimpiada Nacional. • While she has competed in the backstroke at the conference

SEASON PREVIEW

championships, Hammond will aid the Lumberjacks in this area during the dual meet season.

BREASTSTROKE “Urte Kazakeviciute has been swimming on our relays and was third in the 200 and fourth in the 100. She’s right there at the top of the conference with some (NCAA) ‘B’ cuts, so hopefully she can reach into NCAA consideration. Audrey Mann is a solid breaststroker as well as Sarah Takach and our newcomer Emily Martin. All three of them have the potential to score in both breaststrokes at the conference meet and they’re good training partners for each other.” - Johns • Like Lenhoff, senior Urte Kazakeviciute has been on the cusp of individual WAC superiority. Kazakeviciute has earned medals in the 200 breaststroke in each of her three years, in addition to consecutive fourth-place finishes in the 100. Also similar to Lenhoff, Kazakeviciute ranks second all-time in program history in both events - 1:02.47 in the 100 and 2:13.73 in the 200. • Junior Audrey Mann was a first time WAC Championship point scorer last season and placed 12th in the 100 breast. She also swam in the C final of the 200, posting career-best times in both events. • Sophomore Sarah Takach is another name that NAU will rely on this season with a relative lack of championship experience. Takach will hope to follow Mann’s path with a significant jump in her second season. • The Lumberjacks’ lone breaststroke newcomer is freshman Emily Martin, who placed fourth as a senior in the 100 breaststroke at the Arizona State Championships.

BUTTERFLY “The big deal for Alina Staffeldt is finding the tenths of seconds to put her into the NCAA Championships. Andrea Schmidt was a top eight finalist in the 200 and a consolation swimmer in the 100, so we’re hoping she can make it to the top eight in the 100 as well. Kimmy Richter is solid in sea-

son and any time we need her to do a butterfly event, she’ll be there. I like what I’ve been seeing out of Allison Baldwin and Kate Bier during this first month and we’re going to be depending on them to fill in some spots.” - Johns • Staffeldt is NAU’s most accomplished swimmer, as she begins her third season as the defending WAC 200 butterfly champion. Staffeldt broke the school record with a time of 1:57.66 in winning her second career gold medal following her 100 butterfly victory as a freshman. She also owns the 100 fly school record, lowering her own record mark to 53.83 in a second-place finish last season. • NAU will complement Staffeldt with Schmidt after placing eighth in the 200 fly at last year’s WAC Championships. Schmidt also reached the B final and posted a 14th-place finish in the 100. • Freshman Kate Bier joins the ’Jacks as a four-time First Team swimmer in the 100 fly as a prep in Oregon. She is joined by fellow freshman Allison Baldwin, who was a two-time Southwestern League 100 fly and four-time CIF qualifier in California. • Richter is an exceptional dual meet butterflier and does have championship experience in both butterfly events. As a freshman, Richter placed eighth in the 200.

INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY “We’re thin in the IMs, especially in the 400. Audrey Mann can handle it and Sarah Takach will have to do. Kate Bier and Monique King showed some ability to help us out here too (in the Pentathlon). Dual meets will be a different story than the conference meet, but the Kansas Classic will be a nice opportunity for some to swim the IMs and help us figure a few things out.” - Johns • The Lumberjacks lost their top individual medley swimmers from a year ago, and will be looking at Audrey Mann first and foremost to carry the IM initially. Mann did finish 13th in the 200 IM last year, and was the Pentathlon runner-up this year, but has not swam the 400 IM at the conference meet. • Takach is the only other ’Jack listed on the roster as an IM swim-

mer and did earn a night swim in the 200 IM C final last season. Like Mann, she is more of a 200 IM specialist as compared to the 400. • King could be an individual medley swimmer in the making after winning the Pentathlon. On her way to the meet title, she finished second in the 200m IM. Bier had a similar impressive showing as she placed fourth overall with a fourth-place finish in the 200m IM.

RELAYS “Our entire 200 medley relay returns and we’re in good position in both medley relays at the end of the year. The 800 freestyle relay looks as good as last year, and we have a lot more swimmers to draw from for the 400 freestyle relay. The 200 freestyle relay is where we lost the most.” - Johns • Last year, the Lumberjacks started off the WAC Championships in grand fashion winning the 200 medley relay for the first time since 1988. All four members of NAU’s gold medal 200 medley relay team return in Lenhoff, Kazakeviciute, Staffeldt and Houck, who posted a time of 1:41.45. • NAU also won gold in the 200 freestyle relay, posting a school record time of 1:31.58, but only return half of the team - Staffeldt and Houck. It was the first 200 free relay win for the ’Jacks since 1997. • Richter, Hammond and Staffeldt return as part of NAU’s silver medal 800 freestyle team. • In the 400 medley relay, Kazakeviciute, Staffeldt and Hammond are back with Lenhoff the most likely replacement on the opening backstroke leg. • Finally in the 400 freestyle relay on the final day of the conference meet, Houck and Hammond consist of half of NAU’s team from a year ago.

DIVING “I’m really excited about our team. Alexa Geiger won both springboards last year and just missed NCAAs, but she trained really hard this summer and I think she’s going to have a great season. Christina Torrente and Raquel Gon-

zales, I can’t say enough about those two. Even in the first two weeks, their leadership and poise is showing as sophomores. Tanya Kurach comes in and will help us immediately to replace what we’ve lost. Even Olivia Payne brings in a lot of experience and I’m excited for both of them as additions to the team.” - Diving Coach Nikki Huffman

SEASON PREVIEW

• Olivia Payne is NAU’s second transfer, who joins the program after spending her freshman season at the University of Utah. At Utah, she competed in seven meets including appearances on platform and 3-meter at the Pac-12 Championships.

• Senior Alexa Geiger leads the WAC’s top diving unit, coming off conference Diver of the Year honors. Geiger earned the top award after sweeping both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards at last season’s WAC Championships. She posted career-best scores of 302.30 on 1-meter and 322.05 on 3-meter en route to winning her first career gold medals. Both of those scores place her fifth in NAU’s record books. She just missed the NCAA Championships by placing 12th on 1-meter at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships. • The depth of NAU’s diving team showed as sophomore Raquel Gonzales was the only diver to rack up three all-conference honors by placing in the top eight in all three events as a freshman. Gonzales, the platform specialist, finished fourth on tower but showed her talent on springboard by placing fifth on 3-meter and eighth on 1-meter. She also qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships and already ranks third all-time in school history on platform with a score of 227.50. • Sophomore Christina Torrente is the third and final returning Lumberjack diver following a season that also ended with a Zone Diving appearance. Torrente won the consolation final and placed ninth overall on 1-meter and also placed 13th on platform in her debut season. • The Lumberjacks will add a pair of sophomore transfers into the mix and both come in with high credentials. Tanya Kurach enters NAU after one year at Henderson State, where she became the program’s first female NCAA All-American diver by placing eighth at the NCAA Division II Championships last season. She also placed ninth on 3-meter and set an NCAA Division II record on 1-meter at the New South Intercollegiate Swimming Conference Championships.

2016-17 SEASON

2016-17 LUMBERJACK SWIMMING & DIVING MEDIA GUIDE HEAD COACH

HEAD COACH

ANDY

Johns

Andy Johns, the three-time reigning Western Athletic Conference Swimming Coach of the Year, enters his 21st season as the Northern Arizona head swimming & diving coach having guided the program to three consecutive WAC Championships. Together with Diving Coach Nikki Huffman, the two coaches have turned the Lumberjacks into one of the premier programs in the West. Throughout his illustrious tenure at the helm of the Lumberjacks, Johns has produced championship caliber teams together year in and year out in addition to developing a program that is equally exceptional in the classroom as it is in the pool. He has navigated NAU from the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference to its first all-Division I affiliation in the National Independent Conference (NIC) in 1998-99, followed by the program’s move to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) prior to the 2004-05 season. In 18 years against exclusively Division I competition at the conference level, Johns has led NAU to four conference championships, including WAC titles each of the last three years, nine second-place finishes and four third-place efforts. Furthermore, the Lumberjacks have captured 54 individual and relay conference titles, 125 school records (a high of 11 set at the 2009 WAC meet), nine conference records and 45 NCAA qualifying marks under Johns’ tutelage. Johns has always been a proponent of the “total” program – one that also succeeds in the classroom – and his ’Jacks continue to achieve academic greatness. Since the fall of 1996, his student-athletes have posted cumulative gradepoint averages of 3.00 and higher in 38 of 40 academic semesters. The Lumberjacks are consistently among the best programs the league in placing student-athletes on the WAC All-Academic lists with 21 earning the honor last year. NAU has been recognized 13 times as an Academic All-America Team by the Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) including last year’s squad which posted a 3.44 grade point average in the spring. As NAU’s longest-tenured current head coach, Johns’ team’s success has been unrivaled and the program was rewarded with the brand new Aquatic and Tennis Complex. The ATC, which Johns played a key role in the design process, officially opened its doors in February 2016 and is NAU swimming & diving’s new home following its 32-year stay in the Wall Aquatic Center. The opening of the ATC was just one of many highlights of the 2015-16 season which featured NAU’s third consecutive WAC Championship. The three-peat was achieved in near record fashion as Johns’ squad ripped their way through the conference competition besting runner-up New Mexico

Northern Arizona University, Head Coach State by 319.5 points. NAU posted 807.5 points during the fourday championships and recorded the fifth largest margin of victory in WAC history. NAU claimed seven event victories, setting a new high water mark for the program since joining the WAC. The Lumberjacks’ dominant performance earned Johns his third straight WAC Coach of the Year honor and fourth overall. Proving to be more than just a distance-oriented team, Johns saw his 200 freestyle relay team of junior Hayley Edmond, sophomores Roni Houck and Alina Staffeldt and freshman Ila Hughes set a new school record on their way to winning the event for the first time since 1997 – prior to NAU joining the WAC. Staffeldt also broke the school record in winning the 200 butterfly, while senior Kendall Brown won both the 500 and 1650 freestyles among the many highlights. As has become customary, all 21 of NAU’s scoring athletes scored points in at least two of their three individual events and the ’Jacks were the only team to place an athlete in the championship heat in every event for the second straight year. The performance followed NAU’s successful title defense in 2014-15. Just as NAU continues to prove, the Lumberjacks are one team and depth was key as all 20 of NAU’s scoring athletes earned a scoring spot in at least one individual event. The ‘Jacks claimed two individual gold medals with junior diver Chelsea Jackson winning the 3-meter event and freshman Alina Staffeldt – NAU’s Female Newcomer of the Year – breaking the school record en route to placing first in the 100 butterfly. Staffeldt and sophomore Urte Kazakeviciute notched NCAA ‘B’ standard times as NAU finished with 666 points, 127 more than New Mexico State, to bring the hardware back to Flagstaff for the second consecutive year. A total of 16 student-athletes combined for 39 All-WAC honors at the 2015 WAC Championships. In the classroom, three student-athletes – Jackson, Staffeldt and sophomore div-

After a near miss the year prior, Johns led the Lumberjacks to a banner year in 201314 as NAU clinched its first WAC Championship in school history. Despite winning just two individual gold medals - senior Jordan Burnes in the 200 breaststroke and sophomore Kendall Brown in the 1650 freestyle - the Lumberjacks turned a 19-point lead heading into the final day into a 743642 final margin over Idaho on the final day to bring back the conference title to Flagstaff. Twenty athletes scored points for the Lumberjacks showcasing the team’s full depth while Burnes broke both of her school records in the breaststroke events. Burnes, Brown and freshman Urte Kazakeviciute combined to record four NCAA ‘B’ standard times. For the second consecutive year, the Lumberjacks finished the 2013-14 season in the top-25 of the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major poll. As exceptional as they were in the pool, Johns’ team was equally stellar in the classroom posted the seventh-best GPA in the nation among swimming & diving programs during the Spring 2014 semester. The Lumberjacks earned a pair of CSCAA All-American team awards during the academic year and they led all WAC winter sports with 19 All-Academic selections. In all, NAU placed 22 of its student-athletes on the conference all-academic list. Three Lumberjacks earned CSCAA Scholar All-American honors and seniors Andrea Derflinger, Emma Lowther and Stirling Smith all were recipients of the prestigious NAU Gold Axe Award. Smith was also named NAU’s Female Senior Student-Athlete of the Year award which marked the second straight year that the program produced the top female student-athlete at NAU. After initially settling into the Western Athletic Conference, Johns’ Lumberjacks established themselves as title contenders recording four runner-up finishes over a six-year span capped by a narrow seven-point loss to San Jose State at the 2013 conference meet before finally hoisting the trophy in 2014. Despite falling just short of the program’s first WAC Championship, freshman Ellie Morrissey was named the WAC Freshman of the Year at the conclusion of the meet with Nikki Huffman receiving her second WAC Diving Coach of the Year award. NAU also won its first WAC medley relay title in the 400 medley relay, shattering the previous school record by nearly two seconds in the process. Between the 2010-11 and 2012-13 seasons, NAU totaled 11 individual titles, including five each in 2012 and 2013, 22 NCAA ‘B’ standard times, including a program-record 11 in 2012, and 24 new school records, with a high of 10 in 2013. In that span, seven student-athletes combined for 10 All-American honors with Fi Connell, Emma Lowther and Jordan Burnes each earning a pair of honors. While the program was reaching new heights within the conference, Johns led NAU to its first dual meet victory over Arizona State as well as fellow Pac-12 foe Washington State. The Lumberjacks also produced some of the top female student-athletes at NAU as Kristy Ardavanis (2012-13) and Rachel Palmer (2011-12) received the university’s Female Athlete of the Year award. Meanwhile, Ellie Morrissey (2012-13) and Caitlin Wright (2011-12) were voted as NAU’s Female Newcomers of the Year. The ‘Jacks also reached a high-water ranking of a tie for sixth in the final CollegeSwimming.com 2013 Mid-Major Poll while tying for the sixth-best team GPA among all NCAA Division I women’s swimming & diving programs in 2013, marking NAU’s second consecutive top 10 academic GPA ranking nationally. In 2012-13, a pair of Lumberjacks received distinguished academic honors as Fi Connell was named NAU’s Female Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Palmer was voted to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 Women’s At-Large First Team. Johns led NAU to a pair of second place finishes at the WAC Championships prior to a fifth place finish in 2010. The Lumberjacks earned the runner-up title among nine teams in 2008-09 and finished second among eight teams during the 2007-08 season. At the 2009 WAC Championships, the Lumberjacks earned 43 All-WAC Awards and set 11 school records, marking the most records set at the WAC meet in the five years NAU had been a member. During NAU’s first three seasons as an affiliate member of the WAC, Johns helped improve the Lumberjacks’ fifthplace finish in their inaugural season in 2004-05 to a pair of third-place finishes. He was named WAC Coach of the Year in NAU’s rookie season and was pivotal in coaching Alexis Buckley to the 2006 NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga. Buckley swam in both the 1,650 and 500 freestyle and became the first female swimmer at NAU to represent the Lumberjacks in 12 years. Prior to joining the WAC, NAU finished second at the National Independent Conference (NIC) Championships in 2003-04 and Johns was named the NIC Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year. NAU had seven individual conference champions, tying the team record for the most champions in a single conference meet. The Lumberjacks also set 10 school records, and earned two other honors in addition to Johns’, as assistant coach Nikki Huffman earned her fourth Diving Coach of the Year honor and then-sophomore Blair Buder was named the Female Diver of the Year. NIKKI

Huffman

Nikki Huffman begins her 21st year at the helm of the Northern Arizona diving program, a squad that she has consistently led to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. A fourtime National Independent Conference (NIC) Diving Coach of the Year and three-time Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Coach of the Year, Huffman now takes her team into their 13th year of WAC competition, a league which boasts some of the top divers in the country. Over the last 20 years, NAU has not had less than two divers who have competed at the NCAA Zone Championships under Huffman’s leadership. In all, Huffman has coached 29 different divers to the zone diving meet on the women’s side, a number that is double the amount who represented NAU prior to Huffman’s arrival. With Huffman’s guidance, NAU has routinely proven to be equal competitors with those from the Pac-12, Mountain West and Big West on the regional stage. While success on the boards has been prominent in describing Huffman, her charges have also been superior in the classroom. The divers have helped the Lumberjacks be named an Academic All-America Team by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) numerous times - an honor given to a team with a grade-point average of 3.00 and higher. She has coached two NAU Golden Eagle Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year (Courtney McKenzie, 2002-03; Chelsea Jackson, 2015-16), two CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees (McKenzie, 2003 First Team; Lana Christensen, 2011 Second Team) and four different student-athletes to CSCAA Honorable Mention Academic All-America honors (Anna Deem, 2003; Alexa Geiger, 2014, 2015; Jackson, 2013, 2014, 2015; McKenzie, 2003). What has quickly become an annual tradition, the Lumberjack divers made the biggest splash at the WAC Championships earning Huffman the honor of WAC Diving Coach of the Year last season. Huffman’s divers played a critical role in NAU capturing its third consecutive conference championship and were led by junior Alexa Geiger, who was awarded the WAC’s Diver of the Year award. Geiger took home the hardware after winning gold on both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards, while freshman Raquel Gonzales placed in the top eight in all three diving events. The ’Jacks put their stamp on the meet from the first individual event – placing all six of their divers in scoring positions – and never let up. For the second consecutive year, four divers combined for nine all-conference honors, and the momentum was carried over into the NCAA Zone E Championships where all six divers qualified – matching the most in school history. Senior Chelsea Jackson, a five-time WAC Diver of the Week awardee during the season, narrowly missed her bid to the NCAA

All four of NAU’s scoring divers - juniors Chelsea Jackson and Carlye Townsend, sophomore Alexa Geiger and freshman Emma Simmonds - all placed in the top eight on 1-meter. After making a statement in the first diving event as a team, the Lumberjacks got their first gold medal of the championship when Jackson claimed the 3-meter title. In all, the Huffman’s four divers accounted for nine all-conference honors, with Jackson and Geiger diving in the championship final in all three events. Huffman also mentored freshman Alyssa Loeffelman to an impressive WAC Championship performance. Although she dove as a non-scorer, Loeffelman’s preliminary scores on both springboards would have been good enough to score points in the finals. Jackson and Geiger proceeded to dive at the NCAA Zone E Meet where Jackson placed 15th on 1-meter and 18th on 3-meter. Both Jackson and Geiger earned WAC Diver of the Week honors during the season, combining for three awards from the conference office. Huffman’s divers were an integral part of NAU’s first-ever WAC Championship team in 2013-14 as all four of her divers scored points for the Lumberjacks at the conference meet. Sophomore Chelsea Jackson led the way as she placed third on all three boards to earn three All-WAC first team honors. Huffman also coached senior Jane Wakefield, sophomore Carlye Townsend and freshman Alexa Geiger to breakout performances at the WAC Championships. 2016 WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS/ZONE DIVING RECAP

Even as the two-time defending Western Athletic Conference champions, the Northern Arizona swimming & diving team entered the 2016 WAC Championships without a little doubt. Two late season dual meet losses lingered in the back of their minds, but it did not take long for any worries to be erased. With a completely dominant performance by the divers, and a thrilling come-from-behind win in the 200 medley relay on the first night, the Lumberjacks had liftoff in Houston. In the end, the ‘Jacks won WAC. Again. For the third consecutive year. “Leading up to (conference), we thought we were pretty good but we didn’t really know,” said head coach Andy Johns. “Some of the girls went in with a few doubts, and we might have had a few doubts as coaches going in. The first relay was big because we had never won it before. That combined with what we were doing in diving, after the first night we were in pretty good shape. To have a lead that we had and just keep building on it, it was a lot of fun.” Like a locomotive building up steam on the track, the Lumberjacks asserted themselves once again as the team to beat from the opening session and refused to let up. From a first-day lead of 62 points all the way to a championship margin of more than 300 points, NAU was the class of the WAC in one of the biggest runaway victories in conference history. By the end of four days, the Lumberjacks totaled 807.5 points, which was 319.5 points better – the fifth largest margin of victory in WAC history – than New Mexico State. While NAU once again showcased its unrivaled team depth throughout its scoring roster, the Lumberjacks’ path to victory was glistening with more gold than usual. All 21 of NAU’s scoring athletes scored points in at least two of their three individual events with 16 of them earning all-conference honors by placing in the top eight in at least one ‘A’ final. Furthermore, NAU was the only team to place an athlete in the championship heat in every event. What was not exactly the same as the Lumberjacks’ two pre-

@NAUATHLETICS

36

vious championships were their frequent trips to the head of the podium. After totaling just two gold medals in each of the past two years, NAU collected seven event wins in 2016 – its most in a single year since joining the WAC more than a decade ago. Even more impressive was that the golds were distributed evenly with two diving wins, two relay wins, two distance wins and a victory in the 200 butterfly. “We talk about being balance and having depth and that’s how we win championships,” Johns said. “Nikki (Huffman) does a great job with the divers and Laura (Thomas) did a tremendous job with our sprinters and it all came together. But to win seven events – that’s a third of the meet – that made this meet a little different. As coaches we were up (at the podium) giving out awards and that’s always special to give them their hardware and congratulations.” It is hard to say that meet was over after the first day, but following the Lumberjacks’ performance, the other teams would be hard pressed to dethrone the Blue & Gold. Boasting the strongest, and deepest, diving unit in the WAC, the Lumberjacks sprung to action on 1-meter from the get-go by immediately taking ownership of half of the top eight. Junior Alexa Geiger – who would go on to be voted the WAC Diver of the Year – garnered the team’s first gold medal with senior Chelsea Jackson placing second. NAU even made noise in the consolation final with freshman Christina Torrente winning the ‘B’ final as all six of the Lumberjack divers scored points in the first event of the meet. “It was a perfect day for us,” said diving coach Nikki Huffman. “I actually think we’re a little stronger on 3-meter typically, but we seemed to have it going on. We were ready to go that day. Part of it is that we’re the start of the meet and everyone wants to do extremely well for the whole team. It was incredible and it got everything rolling – both swimming and diving.” Get it rolling is exactly what the divers did for the entire team. When the swimmers took center stage for the first time on the opening night, NAU rallied to win the 200 medley relay for the first time in nearly 30 years since 1988 with a furious rally. Sitting in fifth at the halfway point of the race, sophomore Alina Staffeldt seized the lead on the butterfly leg and turned it over to sophomore Roni Houck who completed the victory. The two wins coupled with a second-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay accounted for an amazing opening night in which the ’Jacks pocketed 147 points compared to just 89 through the same events a year prior. If the message was not clear, the Lumberjacks made it clear that they were gunning for the three-peat on the second day. What may have been unexpected was the main source of NAU’s points – in the sprint freestyle events. Led by a blazing group of new blood – Staffeldt, Houck, junior Hayley Edmond and freshmen Ila Hughes and Andrea Schmidt – all of whom were recruited in the last two years, NAU flexed its muscles in the 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay. In the 50, NAU finished second through fifth in succession

LUMBERJACK

#NAUSTRONG 2016 WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS/ZONE DIVING RECAP with Hughes and Houck earning the silver and bronze respectively. Schmidt and senior Trinity Frazee added to NAU’s total with six of the 16 scoring spots taken by ’Jacks. That led to the Lumberjacks’ record breaking performance in the 200 free relay as Edmond, Houck, Staffeldt and Hughes raced their way to a new school record of 1:31.58 and a gold medal from the outside lane. In the midst of the sprinters making a statement, senior Kendall Brown and Geiger also won individual gold medals on the second night. For Brown, she posted a lifetime best time to win the 500 free, while Geiger went two-for-two on the springboards with her second gold of the meet on 3-meter. All of that added up to a lead of almost 200 points, just one year after NAU led by only 24 points through two days. Without their commanding advantage in diving on the third day, NAU’s swimmers were more than enough to once again widen its lead on the scoreboard with all 15 of the team’s scoring swimmers earning evening swims. Among the highlights were Brown, senior Monica Pruett and freshman Amanda Sumrow going twothree-four in the 400 IM and sophomores Claire Hammond and Kimmy Richter finishing third and fifth respectively in the 200 free. Also of note were junior Urte Kazakeviciute (100 breaststroke) and Staffeldt (100 fly) each turning in NCAA B Standard times. In all, NAU had the most scoring athletes on the third night and the most in ‘A’ finals – as was the case throughout the entire meet. With 546.5 points after three days, which turned out to be more than runner-up New Mexico State would total in four days, all the Lumberjacks needed to do was put the final touches on another championship performance on Saturday. Staffeldt provided the punctuating swim in winning the 200 fly and earning NAU’s seventh and final gold medal. In a rousing victory, Staffeldt shattered the previous school record with a time of 1:57.66 which wound up being the 51st fastest time in the country this season. “Every morning we showed up needing to put people in the

SWIMMING & DIVING

final,” Johns said. “We were already on our way and then the 200 freestyle relay victory from the outside lane was one of those statement swims that said we weren’t going away. Alina’s 200 fly at the end of the meet was the exclamation point on the whole meet.” Brown lapped the field to win her second gold of the meet in her premier event – the mile freestyle – for the third time in four years. Medals – and points – continued to accumulate for the ’Jacks on the final night as NAU did nothing to slow down even with a sizeable lead in hand. On platform, Jackson placed third with freshman Raquel Gonzales and senior Carlye Townsend also finishing in the top eight despite competing on tower for just the second time this season. Led by Geiger’s two victories and Gonzales’ three top eight finishes – the most on the team – what was known before the meet was confirmed that diving supremacy belonged to the ’Jacks. “It was a really great team effort,” Huffman said. “Overall, they all did an incredible job and they each had moments of greatness as well as moments they had to overcome with grace and style. Being WAC Champions, being that good of a team, I’m sure we walked in there with a target on our back. We needed to remember to stay humble and earn it in the pool. That’s what was special about this team. They took pride in being a great team, and they wanted to do well for each other.” After one of the most complete team performances that the WAC has ever seen, it was no surprise that Johns received his third straight WAC Coach of the Year award and Huffman was named WAC Diving Coach of the Year for the second time in four years. Although the swimmers’ season came to an end – with Staffeldt coming the closest to qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 200 fly – the divers’ success carried into the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships in none other than their home facility. Hosting the zone competition for the first time ever, NAU had six participants matching the most in school history. Of the six, four – senior Carlye Townsend, sophomore Emma Simmonds, Gonzales and Torrente – made their Zone debuts. NAU had its most success on 1-meter, where Jackson narrowly missed punching her own ticket to the national championships by finishing one spot out, and a mere four points away, from automatic qualification. Geiger also placed 12th, giving the ’Jacks a pair of divers in the first three spots out of the top nine qualifiers in the vastly talented Zone E. “Sixty divers deep, it’s a really large Zone,” Huffman said. “It’s the most competitive Zone with a lot of international divers. The 1-meter, 3-meter and platform events at NCAAs were all won by a diver from our zone. There are a couple of places that you need to be sharper in that meet, but I was really proud of all of them.” Entered with doubts, left with extreme confidence. Confidence is everything and if that level of confidence carries over, it will not be easy to take the title away from the ’Jacks the next time the WAC converges in 2017.

COACHING STAFF

2016-17 SEASON

2016-17 LUMBERJACK SWIMMING & DIVING MEDIA GUIDE NAU HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES/NCAA PARTICIPANTS Valerie Carter (1984-87), a 2006 NAU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, didn’t know it but right after the ball dropped to start 2006, the ball started rolling on her induction. Keeping it a complete secret, Joe Carter contacted the NAU Athletic Media Relations office in early January to inquire about nominating his wife for the honor and from there, Carter’s numerous accomplishments in diving at NAU began to surface. Carter (formely Simmons) qualified for the NCAA Championships twice, becoming the first athlete in the program to ever qualify, and also became the school record-holder in both the one and three-meter events as well as the Pac-West Conference champion in both events as a junior. Carter was the team co-captain as a senior, all-academic Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference honoree and was twice named the team’s most outstanding diver. Carter didn’t just receive a degree, pack up and leave. She has made Flagstaff her home and NAU her career. She has four different degrees from the university in physical therapy including an advanced master’s and a doctorate. Carter currently works as an associate professor in the Physical Therapy Department and also owns and operates Carter Rehabilitation in town along with her husband. April Diez-Walker (1992-96), a first-ballot inductee into the NAU Athletics Hall of Fame, was the first female swimmer to compete at the Division I Swimming and Dving Championships and is the only swimming All-American in school history. Diez-Walker was a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier and still holds three individual school records - the 500 freestyle, 1,000 freestyle and 1,650 freestyle. A 1994 NCAA All-American in the 1,650 freestyle, she finished sixth overall at the NCAA meet and placed ninth in the 500 freestyle, earning honorable mention All-America honors. She was also a championship finalist at the 1993 World University Games in Buffalo, N.Y. Diez-Walker was also named the top female scholar-athlete in the nation following the 1993-94 academic year based on her athletic and academic accomplishments (a perfect 4.00 grade point average). The former April Diez was named Female Swimmer of the Year following the 1995 Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships after winning the 1,650 free, 200 free, 500 free and 400 individual medley and setting an NAU record in the process. A native of Phoenix, she earned her degree in sociology at NAU, completed law school at the University of California, Berkeley, before moving back to Phoenix. A 2007 graduate of NAU, Alexis Buckley (2003-07) was the first female swimmer in 12 years to participate in the NCAA Championships when she qualified as a junior in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:27.12, second only to All-American April Diez’s time of 16:18.13. Buckley was the first NAU swimmer to earn a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) title, garnering two of them since the Lumberjacks joined the WAC in 2004-05. As a junior, Buckley won the 1,650 freestyle at the WAC Championships and as a senior she set a school-record time of 4:23.73, that has since been broken, en route to winning her second title in the 400 individual medley. As a freshman, Buckley also won a conference title in the 1,650 freestyle before the Lumberjacks moved to the WAC. At the 2006 NCAA Championships, Buckley placed 19th in the 1,650 freestyle and 33rd in the prelims of the 500 freestyle.

Pam Rogers, a 2007 NAU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, was the head coach for the swimming and diving program from 1983-96 and also the first coach of the program. Rogers won five Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference titles during her tenure and was responsible for the addition of the men’s program, which also won five conference titles. Rogers was the first woman in the sport of swimming and diving to be the head coach of a combined men’s and women’s Division I team. The team finished 29th at the 1994 NCAA Championships behind All-American April Diez’s performance in the 500 and 1,650 freestyle. Rogers coached 39 women’s conference champions in individual events and 47 Golden Eagle Scholar Athletes. She was a four-time All-American, a two-time national champion and an alternate for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1976, and went on to coach Arizona State to two national and four conference titles.

2016-17 SEASON

2016-17 LUMBERJACK SWIMMING & DIVING MEDIA GUIDE

Northern Arizona University provides an outstanding undergraduate residential education strengthened by important research, graduate and professional programs, and a responsive distance learning network delivering programs throughout Arizona. NAU’s underlying core strength at the undergraduate level is in its ability to provide knowledge of the world, an ability to appreciate change, diversity, and life itself. Faculty and staff members are committed to the residential campus concept and to the student population; however, they are also prepared to deliver education throughout Arizona and the world either online or in new campus structures. The Mountain Campus has a student population of more than 20,000 at its main campus in Flagstaff and at sites across the state. NAU was established in 1899 as the Northern Arizona Normal School. A close, personal interest in the development of each student as an individual has long been a trademark of the Mountain Campus. This educational experience is enhanced by an atmosphere that celebrates the diversity of opinions and cultures. The undergraduate programs at NAU cover a diverse range of disciplines from liberal arts and the sciences to professional and career-related fields. As NAU looks to the future, it continues to develop innovative ways to provide citizens with greater access to education and strives to strengthen its teaching and service partnerships to meet the needs of a changing Arizona. Flagstaff, with a population of about 57,000, is rich in cultural diversity. Located at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is 140 miles north of Phoenix at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40. With its elevation of 7,000 feet and a four-season climate, Flagstaff is ideal for year-round outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include the Grand Canyon, Lowell Observatory, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Monument Valley, Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, and Arizona Snowbowl.

The state-of-the art facility, located across the street from NAU’s Health and Learning Center, will be the new home of NAU swimming & diving and men’s and women’s tennis. Groundbreaking for the ATC was held on May 1, 2014 after the Arizona Board of Regents unanimously approved the proposal on Feb. 7, 2014. The Aquatic and Tennis Complex replaced the Wall Aquatic Center – the home of the Lumberjack swimming & diving program for the last 34 years since the pool’s opening in 1983. The 120,000 square foot ATC is more than double the size of the 50,000 square foot Wall Aquatic Center. For the NAU swimming & diving team, the ATC includes an Olympic-sized swimming pool as well as a separate diving well. In addition to 1-meter and 3-meter springboards, there is the addition of a 10-meter diving platform that the Wall Aquatic Center previously had not supported. Other features include dryland training areas and a spa. Both the NAU men’s and women’s tennis teams will enjoy the luxury of their own on-campus courts since 2007 when there were previously six outdoor courts to use. The ATC will provide the two programs with an indoor home for daily practice and home matches featuring six indoor courts. Previously at the mercy of Flagstaff’s

SWIMMING & DIVING

unpredictable weather, NAU tennis had hosted home matches at Continental Country Club and the Flagstaff Athletic Club as well as in Sedona in recent years while resorting to the two-court Fieldhouse for an on-campus practice facility. The second phase of the ATC will provide both tennis teams with six outdoor courts adjacent to the facility. Spectator viewing decks are available for both the pool and tennis courts. Shortly after the grand opening, the Aquatic and Tennis Complex hosted the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships from March 7-9, 2016. Nearly 100 divers – both men’s and women’s – representing 25 universities spanning the Pac-12, Mountain West, WAC and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conferences competed at the qualifying meet for the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. The first tennis match held in the ATC was on Feb. 21, 2016 when the NAU men’s tennis team posted a 7-0 victory over Western New Mexico. The NAU women’s tennis team made their debut in the facility on March 5, 2016 and splitting a doubleheader with a 5-2 win over conference rival Montana State and a narrow 4-3 loss to Emory University, the reigning Division III national runner-ups.
