MEDIA OPPORTUNITY Head coach Andy Johns is available every day before and after practice. Individual athletes may be requested at this time also. Special requests for availability may be made to the athletics communications office. INTERVIEW POLICY All student-athlete interviews must be coordinated through the Athletics Communications office at least one day in advance. No interviews or photo shoots will be conducted on days prior to meets. Outof-town media should contact the Athletics Communications office to make arrangements for phone interviews. Student-athletes are also available for interviews after practice, and, if prior arrangements have been made, before practice. The NAU locker room and training room are closed. JOHNS’ INTERVIEWS Andy Johns and his staff are generally available for interviews before or after each practice. Contact Stayson Isobe in the athletics communications office at 928-5236330 to coordinate all interviews with head coach Andy Johns. PRACTICE Daily workouts are open to both the public and the media unless otherwise noted. Media planning to attend practice should notify the Athletics Communications office in advance to confirm start times and to arrange interviews. CREDENTIALS Credentials will be issued only to working media on a first-come, first-serve basis, with priority given to daily newspapers and television crews. The pool deck is closed to those not involved in meet coverage. Credentials may be requested for the season or on a per-meet basis. All requests should be submitted to the Athletics Communications office no later than two days prior to each home meet. Requests on official letterhead may be faxed to (928) 5236793. Credentials may be picked up from a member of the athletics communications office. No credentials will be mailed unless the request is made at least two weeks in advance. PHOTOGRAPHERS Photographers and videographers are

permitted on the deck area but not in the team areas around the pool. Please contact the athletics communications office if you wish to shoot photos at a practice or event. All media must wear their credentials at all times. Due to space limits, credentials will be issued only to photographers on assignment. Meet programs with lane and heat assignments are available upon request. MEDIA SERVICES Regular services on meet day include results at the conclusion of the meet. A postmeet release, complete with event-by-event results, will be emailed to media outlets following the meet. Those media who wish to receive these results are encouraged to provide their information to the athletics communications office. POSTMEET The NAU locker room is closed on the road and in the Aquatic and Tennis Complex. At home, postmeet interviews will be held poolside with requested athletes and coaches from both teams following a short “cooling-off” period. A member of the athletic communications office will collect requests immediately following the conclusion of the meet. MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME Arizona does not move its clock ahead in the spring or back in the fall. As a result, Flagstaff time coincides with the Pacific time zone through Nov. 6. The rest of the season, NAU is compatible with the Mountain time zone.

Last season, the Northern Arizona swimming & diving team’s depth was tested, but the end result was the same – a fourth consecutive Western Athletic Conference title. The window of opportunity for the rest of the WAC to dethrone the Lumberjacks appeared to be last year. Now that the year has come and gone and the ‘Jacks are on the brink of opening the 2017-18 season, their depth is back to where they like it with the infusion of a talented freshman class and the Drive for Five is under way. “We have a lot of balance and depth,” said head coach Andy Johns. “But we’re still going to have to swim and dive up to our potential. We’re not going to just show up, go through the doors and (the WAC) is going to give it to us.” At the head of the team is as accomplished and decorated senior class NAU has ever had. Alina Staffeldt and Kimmy Richter both enter their final years as defending conference champions in two events in addition to a third gold medal as part of the 800 freestyle relay team. Roni Houck, Claire Hammond, Audrey Mann and Allison Mann have also performed well over the course of their careers, with this class combining for 43.5 percent of the team’s points at the WAC Championships last season. The seniors will own their share of the spotlight all season long, but they are far from the only Lumberjacks to keep an eye out for. The junior class is headlined by NCAA Championship qualifier Tatiana Kurach – one of four junior Lumberjacks who will lead the diving unit. Andrea Schmidt and Sarah Takach posted big performances at the conference meet last season, and the juniors will also see the return of Monique King off a redshirt year. Thrust into action last season, the sophomores picked up valuable experience and the first-year Lumberjacks have already shown glimpses of what is to come in NAU’s two intrasquad meets. All of this adds up to not only a dangerous team come February, but also one that could be better equipped for the dual meet and invitational season set for them this season. “Our senior class has been good each of their first three years and we expect them to continue that,” Johns said. “The balance of our sophomores and juniors and this freshman class – that has been better than expected in some areas – has turned us into a deeper and better squad.”

Of course, while a fifth consecutive WAC Championship is the target, the Lumberjacks are hoping for a much bigger prize – the NCAA Championships. After getting a taste with Kurach advancing to the national stage this past spring, the ‘Jacks have their eyes set on having a much bigger presence in Columbus, Ohio next March. The pieces are in place for the Lumberjack swimming & diving team to achieve all their goals, with the possibility of 2017-18 season being the biggest splash yet. SPRINT FREESTYLE (50, 100, 200) While Staffeldt is known for dominating the butterfly scene, it was Staffeldt who placed the highest amongst the Lumberjacks in the 50 freestyle at the WAC Championships last season. Staffeldt earned the silver medal in the sprint event, recording a career-best time of 23.11 to move up to third on NAU’s all-time performances list. Staffeldt may have had NAU’s highest sprint finish, but Houck is the unquestioned leader of the sprint freestyle group as she will try to finish her career on a high note after missing out on the ‘A’ final in both the 50 and 100 freestyles. Houck did manage to win the ‘B’ final and pick up crucial ninth-place points in both events though, and has 10 All-WAC honors to her name going into her senior season. “Last year we might’ve missed a beat here, but we’re right back this year,” Johns said. “All of our freestyle relays are going to be really good. Last year we may have been a little limited here, but we have some flexibility and a lot of competition for these spots.” Schmidt placed 11th in the 50 free and freshman Elisa Rodriguez is expected to contribute in the 50 and 100. In fact, Rodriguez was the top finisher in both events during the Blue vs. Gold meet earlier this month. Junior Logan Neal, sophomore Fernanda Montiel and freshmen Natalie Dinch and Lauren Hazel could also be part of the sprint group, especially during the dual meet season. Moving up to the 200 free, Hammond placed sixth in the event in Houston last spring and is one of a number of swimmers who could fill this spot. While Richter, a primary distance freestyler, finished fourth in the 200 free, the emergence of sophomores Alice Hick and Erin Spielman among others could aid the Lumberjacks in the event.

“With Roni, Alina and Andrea coming back with the addition of Elisa, we’re stronger in the 50,” Johns said. “In the 100 and 200, we have a lot of swimmers we can draw from, and that helps everyone.”

DISTANCE FREESTYLE (500, 1000, 1650) The Kiwi Express is back in full force with King eligible for competition this season to give the Lumberjacks the best one-two punch in the distance events with Richter. King and Richter, both New Zealand natives, will hold down the fort in the 500 and mile freestyles at the conference championships, in addition to the 1,000 free during dual meets. Richter, the defending WAC champion in the 500 and mile, earned a total of four all-conference honors last season to up her career total to 10. Hammond, a 2016 silver medalist in the 500 free, placed fifth last season, while Spielman just missed qualifying for the 500 ‘B’ final. Spielman did score points in the mile though, recording a 12th place finish. Freshman Sam Milewski will make a deep distance group even deeper in her first season as she has the ability to not only swim the 200, but up to the mile. Hick and sophomore Kate Bier are also added depth in the 500 in particular. “We’re really excited about our depth,” Johns said. “We’ve been good, but Monique and Sam create flexibility. Kimmy, at times, was a little overlooked in dual meets and now we can move her around a little. Erin and Claire showed up big at the conference meet and overall, this group pushes each other every day.” BACKSTROKE NAU is without its top backstroker of the last four years in Sara Lenhoff, who completed her career last season. With the exception of Allison Mann, the Lumberjacks’ backstroke unit is comprised entirely of underclassmen, but do not let the youth fool you. Montiel won the ‘B’ final in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.05, which placed her in third all-time in school history at the conclusion of her first year. Hammond is also capable of swimming the backstroke, providing further dual meet depth. Three incoming freshmen, led by Sarah O’Connor, will be re-

lied on heavily to help fill the void left by Lenhoff. O’Connor has been the team’s top backstroker through the first two intrasquad meets, while Hazel has posted strong early results as well. Teresa Cobb will also be in the mix, giving the ‘Jacks a youthful injection of talent in this group. “Sara Lenhoff is a big loss, especially on the medley relays, but Sarah O’Connor has shown to be an adequate replacement, and maybe even better in season,” Johns said. “Fernanda is a little stronger in her second year, and Allison being a senior is great in pushing everyone to get better.” BREASTSTROKE Similar to the backstroke, the Lumberjacks will need to replace their top breaststroker in graduated senior Urte Kazkeviciute, who wrapped up her career as the school record holder in the 200 breast. However, a stable of steady returners will hold down the fort in her absence. “By committee, the breaststroke group will be fine,” Johns said. “Audrey (Mann) is the leader, but Sarah (Takach) has improved the last two years. Emily (Martin) had a great freshman year and she will be called upon now.” Audrey Mann is the only senior in the group and has scored points for the ‘Jacks in both the 100 and 200 breast over the last two WAC Championships. Takach made monumental strides in the individual medley last season, and if she can do the same in the breaststrokes this season, the Lumberjacks will be in great shape. Meanwhile, sophomore Emily Martin placed 13th and 14th in the 100 and 200 breast respectively, and even inserted her name into the school record book with the program’s fifth-fastest 100 time (1:03.82) during her freshman season. NAU will also receive a boost from freshmen Niamh McDonagh, Sam Seiber and Hope Williams. McDonagh in particular has been a surprise early through the Lumberjacks’ Pentathlon and Blue vs. Gold meets having won both intrasquad breaststroke events. “We knew Niamh was a good IM’er, but we didn’t know a breaststroker she is,” Johns said. “We won’t want to necessarily always go to her, but especially early in the season it’s a nice

bonus. Sam and Hope have also shown great improvement since they’ve arrived.”

BUTTERFLY If there is one thing missing from Staffeldt’s resume, it is an NCAA Championships bid – something she hopes to cross off the list this season. However, all other boxes have been checked with Staffeldt set to defend both her 100 and 200 butterfly WAC titles. Staffeldt, the school record holder in both fly events (53.83 in the 100, 1:57.66 in the 200), claimed her third and fourth individual gold medals last season. With 15 career All-WAC honors, Staffeldt is the most accomplished swimmer on the entire team, but far from the only notable butterflier. Schmidt’s second WAC Championships was her best to date as she finished fourth in the 200 fly and ninth in the 100 fly, clocking career-best times in both events. Her 200 fly time of 2:01.38 ranks fourth in program history. Meanwhile, Bier placed 10th in the 200 and could be poised for a leap in her second year, much like Schmidt. “Alina is the go-to, but Andrea is coming along really well,” Johns said. “She’s shown great progress over the last two years, especially in the 200. Kate is solid too. We have a lot of different fliers, great leadership and a lot of high quality performers.” In dual meets, Richter has been pivotal in the butterfly events when called upon. Sophomore Allison Baldwin, a butterfly specialist, also showed a spark at the Kansas Classic last season with her 200 fly performance. Rodriguez, Hazel and Dinch could see time in the butterfly along with their freestyle swims, while a fourth freshman – Maddie Seidl – specializes in the fly. INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY Where the Lumberjacks may have improved the most is in the individual medley with the addition of McDonagh, an IM specialist. McDonagh, the 2017 Pentathlon champion, will be critical in providing NAU with its biggest impact in the individual medley events in years. McDonagh will team up with Audrey Mann and Takach – last season’s top IM swimmers – to give the Lumberjacks multiple po-

tential point scorers at the conference meet. While Mann snagged the 16th and final scoring spot in the 200 IM last season, Takach provided one of the biggest sparks in NAU’s run to a fourth-straight WAC title in the 400 IM. Takach posted a lifetime-best time of 4:28.71 to earn a seventh-place finish in the 400 in addition to placing 12th in the 200 with another career-best performance. “It’s been a while since we’ve had an in-season IM’er since Niamh,” Johns said. “She’s super talented and she’s going to be expected to do a lot of work in those events. Having a senior like Audrey is important, and Sarah is committed to getting better. This group has gone from one or two scorers to potentially four or five and that is going to help us a lot.” King, this season’s Pentathlon runner-up and the 2016 champion, is another potential contributor in the individual medley, as is Cobb, Seiber and Seidl who all swam the IM during their prep careers. DIVING Not to be overshadowed by the team’s swimmers in the slightest bit, the Lumberjacks’ divers led by diving coach Nikki Huffman will be a huge part of NAU’s success once again. Although NAU loses Alexa Geiger, a three-time individual WAC Champion, the ‘Jacks are led by a junior class of four who will look to maintain their stranglehold as the conference’s top diving unit. “We’ve lost some great seniors over the last couple of years, but our junior class is already leading,” said diving coach Nikki Huffman. “Each one of them has their own strengths and they build on each other. They work well as a team.” Kurach, the reigning WAC Diver of the Year and NAU Female Athlete of the Year, became only the second female diver in program history to qualify for the NCAA Championships last season. The defending 3-meter WAC champion, Kurach actually qualified for the national meet on 1-meter where she placed 49th overall as the first Lumberjack NCAA participant since 2006. She is joined by juniors Raquel Gonzales and Christina Torrente, who both competed at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships alongside Kurach last season. Gonzales narrowly missed

out on a NCAA Championships appearance herself on platform, and through her first two seasons has garnered five top-eight finishes at the conference meet. Torrente, meanwhile, picked up her first career medal by placing runner-up to Geiger on 1-meter. She also finished fourth on platform, giving the Lumberjacks three bonafide WAC title contenders. NAU’s fourth junior diver is Olivia Payne, who scored valuable points at the WAC Championships in all three events. Her top finish was 12th on 1-meter in her first season at NAU, and a step forward would only make the ‘Jacks even more potent on the boards. “They all do a great job of stepping up; when one isn’t on someone else is,” Huffman said. “That’s why we’ve had such great success. In diving, you’re not on fire every single meet but they’re all really consistent. They’re all going to push each other to get better, and hopefully we can step up and be vying for a couple of those spots at NCAAs again.” The Lumberjacks welcome in three freshmen divers into the program in Jenny Cheetham, Katie Conn and Emily Sharrer to round out the squad. The Lumberjacks’ newcomers join a diving unit that scored over a quarter of NAU’s total points in Houston last season, despite competing in just three of 21 events in the entire meet. “We’re excited about our freshmen,” Huffman said. “Jenny has been able to train since day one and in her first couple of weeks she already learned a few new dives. Once she gets stronger, she’ll be as much of a part as anyone else. Katie is still building off ankle surgery, but everything she’s done so far has been positive. All three of them are very talented.”

NAU Head Coach Andy Johns, the four-time reigning Western Athletic Conference Swimming Coach of the Year, enters his 22nd season as the Northern Arizona head swimming & diving coach having guided the program to four consecutive WAC Championships. Together with Diving Coach Nikki Huffman, the two coaches have turned the Lumberjacks into one of the premier programs in the West. Throughout his illustrious tenure at the helm of the Lumberjacks, Johns has consistently produced championship caliber teams in addition to developing a program that is equally exceptional in the classroom as it is in the pool. In his first 21 years, the ’Jacks have won a total of five conference championships (Pacific Collegiate Swimming, 1998; Western Athletic, 2014-17). Johns’ teams have been a model of consistency as well with nine additional runner-up finishes and just three conference finishes outside the top three. In the pool, the Lumberjacks have captured 61 individual and relay conference titles, 126 school records (a high of 11 set at the 2009 WAC meet), nine conference records and 49 NCAA qualifying marks under Johns’ tutelage. In the classroom, his student-athletes have posted cumulative grade-point averages of 3.00 and higher in 40 of 42 academic semesters. The Lumberjacks are consistently among the best programs the league in placing student-athletes on the WAC All-Academic lists with 14 earning the honor last year. NAU has been recognized 15 times

as an Academic All-America Team by the Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) including last year’s squad which posted a 3.32 grade point average in the spring. Along with building a total program that produces student-athletes to the very definition, Johns’ tenure has included several major moments for NAU swimming & diving. Johns navigated NAU from the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference to its first all-Division I affiliation in the National Independent Conference (NIC) in 1998-99, followed by the program’s move to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) prior to the 2004-05 season. Then in February 2016, the doors to the Aquatic and Tennis Complex opened. As NAU’s longest-tenured current head coach, Johns’ team’s success was rewarded with the ATC, which Johns played a key role in the design process, marking NAU’s new home following 32 years in the Wall Aquatic Center. This past season was one filled with adversity, but Johns’ leadership never wavered as the 2016-17 campaign ended just as the previous three did – with a WAC Championship. A rigorous dual meet schedule that featured four top 40 teams (Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State and Nevada) prepared the ’Jacks for their toughest conference championship challenge yet. Needing to fend off four teams who all finished less than 110 points behind NAU, the Lumberjacks rode seven gold medals to their fourth straight title. The seven event victories tied the program’s highest mark, equaling the 2015-16 team’s total, since joining the WAC. Juniors Alina Staffeldt and Kimmy Richter each won two individual golds, along with swimming on NAU’s gold medal 800 freestyle relay team. Senior Alexa Geiger and sophomore Tatiana Kurach – the WAC Diver of the Year and NCAA Championships qualifier – totaled the final two golds in the springboard diving events. In all, the Lumberjacks posted 615.5 points and Johns was named the WAC Co-Swimming Coach of the Year. The opening of the ATC was just one of many highlights of the 2015-16 season which featured NAU’s third consecutive

WAC Championship. The three-peat was achieved in near record fashion as Johns’ squad ripped their way through the conference competition besting runner-up New Mexico State by 319.5 points. NAU posted 807.5 points during the four-day championships and recorded the fifth largest margin of victory in WAC history. The Lumberjacks’ dominant performance earned Johns his third straight WAC Coach of the Year honor and fourth overall. Proving to be more than just a distance-oriented team, Johns saw his 200 freestyle relay team of junior Hayley Edmond, sophomores Roni Houck and Alina Staffeldt and freshman Ila Hughes set a new school record on their way to winning the event for the first time since 1997 – prior to NAU joining the WAC. Staffeldt also broke the school record in winning the 200 butterfly, while senior Kendall Brown won both the 500 and 1650 freestyles among the many highlights. All 21 of NAU’s scoring athletes scored points in at least two of their three individual events and the ’Jacks were the only team to place an athlete in the championship heat in every event for the second straight year. The historic efforts followed NAU’s first two WAC Championships in program history after a series of near-misses with four runner-up finishes over a six-year span. Johns led the Lumberjacks to a banner year in 2013-14 as NAU clinched its first-ever WAC Championship and followed it up with a successful title defense during the 2014-15 season. In contrast to their third and fourth consecutive championships to follow, the Lumberjacks conquered the WAC despite winning just two individual gold medals. At the 2014 championships, senior Jordan Burnes won the 200 breaststroke and sophomore Kendall Brown in the 1650 freestyle while junior diver Chelsea Jackson and freshman Alina Staffeldt – NAU’s Female Newcomer of the Year – won gold on 3-meter and in the 100 butterfly respectively in 2015. Leading by just 19 points heading into the final day in 2014, the Lumberjacks powered their way to a 743-642 final margin over Idaho on the final day to bring their first WAC title to Flagstaff. A year later, NAU finished with 666 points, 127 more than New Mexico State, to once again bring the hardware back from San Antonio. While the gold medals were elusive, NAU’s full team depth was evident as 20 athletes for the Lumberjacksscored points in backto-back years. Johns’ first WAC Championship team ended the 2013-14 academic year with a flurry of scholastic accolades. NAU posted the seventh-best GPA in the nation during the Spring 2014 semester while seniors Andrea Derflinger, Emma Lowther and Stirling Smith were recipients of the prestigious NAU Gold Axe Award. Smith was also named NAU’s Female Senior Student-Athlete of the Year award which marked the second straight year that the program produced the top female student-athlete at NAU following Fi Connell the year prior. Before their current run of championships, Johns’ Lumberjacks endured heartbreak with a narrow seven-point loss to San Jose State at the 2013 WAC meet. Despite falling just short of the program’s first WAC Championship, freshman Ellie Morrissey was named the WAC Freshman of the Year at the conclusion of the meet with Nikki Huffman receiving her second WAC Diving Coach of the Year award. NAU also won its first WAC medley relay title in the 400 medley relay, shattering the previous school record by nearly two seconds in the process. Between the 2010-11 and 2012-13 seasons, NAU totaled 11 individual titles, including five each in 2012 and 2013, 22 NCAA ‘B’ standard times, including a program-record 11 in 2012, and 24 new school records, with a high of 10 in 2013. In that span, seven student-athletes combined for 10 All-American honors with Fi Connell, Emma Lowther and Jordan Burnes each earning a pair of

honors. While the program was reaching new heights within the conference, Johns led NAU to its first dual meet victory over Arizona State as well as fellow Pac-12 foe Washington State. The Lumberjacks also produced some of the top female student-athletes at NAU as Kristy Ardavanis (2012-13) and Rachel Palmer (201112) received the university’s Female Athlete of the Year award. Meanwhile, Ellie Morrissey (2012-13) and Caitlin Wright (2011-12) were voted as NAU’s Female Newcomers of the Year. The ’Jacks also reached a high-water ranking of a tie for sixth in the final CollegeSwimming.com 2013 Mid-Major Poll while tying for the sixthbest team GPA among all NCAA Division I women’s swimming & diving programs in 2013, marking NAU’s second consecutive top 10 academic GPA ranking nationally. In 2012-13, a pair of Lumberjacks received distinguished academic honors as Fi Connell was named NAU’s Female Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Palmer was voted to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 Women’s At-Large First Team. Johns led NAU to a pair of second place finishes at the WAC Championships prior to a fifth place finish in 2010. The Lumberjacks earned the runner-up title among nine teams in 2008-09 and finished second among eight teams during the 2007-08 season. At the 2009 WAC Championships, the Lumberjacks earned 43 AllWAC Awards and set 11 school records. The 11 school records still remains the most ever set at a conference meet during Johns’ tenure, while the 43 All-WAC honors were topped by the 2015-16 team’s 53 awards. During NAU’s first three seasons as an affiliate member of the WAC, Johns helped improve the Lumberjacks’ fifth-place finish in their inaugural season in 2004-05 to a pair of third-place finishes. He was named WAC Coach of the Year in NAU’s rookie season

Johns is well-respected in the swimming research community, having presented at the American College of Sports Medicine national meeting twice, first about the effects of warm-up in 1991 and tapering in 1992. Johns is published in many sports med-

icine journals, including the International Journal of Sports Medicine and Medicine and Science in Sport in Exercise. He was awarded a research fellowship from the Institute of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina in 1990. As a collegian at East Carolina, Johns helped his team to the Colonial Athletic Association title in 1989. Prior to ECU, he was a junior-college All-American, earning the honor eight times in two years at Broward (Fla.) Community College. Outside of his time as a coach, Johns has performed with the Flagstaff Light Opera Company, including the musicals Oliver and The Secret Garden, and is currently a member of The Flagstaff Master Chorale whom he sang with at Carnegie Hall in March 2012. Johns received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from ECU in 1989 and followed that with a master’s in exercise physiology in 1991. Johns is married to his wife, Misha, and has two daughters, Ali and Maddie.

Northern Arizona Divers Club Head Diving Coach Nikki Huffman begins her 22nd year at the helm of the Northern Arizona diving program, a squad that she has consistently led to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. A four-time National Independent Conference (NIC) Diving Coach of the Year and fourtime Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Coach of the Year, Huffman now takes her team into their 14th year of WAC competition, a league which boasts some of the top divers in the country. Over the last 21 years, NAU has not had less than two divers who have competed at the NCAA Zone Championships under Huffman’s leadership. In all, Huffman has coached 30 different divers to the zone diving meet on the women’s side, a number that is double the amount who represented NAU prior to Huffman’s arrival. With Huffman’s guidance, NAU has routinely proven to be equal competitors with those from the Pac-12, Mountain West and Big West on the regional stage. While success on the boards has been prominent in describing Huffman, her charges have also been superior in the classroom. The divers have helped the Lumberjacks be named an Academic All-America Team by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) numerous times - an honor given to a team with a grade-point average of 3.00 and higher. She has coached two NAU Golden Eagle Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year (Courtney McKenzie, 2002-03; Chelsea Jackson, 201516), two CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees (McKenzie, 2003 First Team; Lana Christensen, 2011 Second Team) and four different student-athletes to CSCAA Honorable Mention Academic All-America honors (Anna Deem, 2003; Alexa Geiger, 2014, 2015; Jackson, 2013, 2014, 2015; McKenzie, 2003). The most recent 2016-17 season was a special one for Huffman as she coached sophomore Tatiana Kurach to the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. Kurach became just the

second women’s diver in school history to qualify for the national championships when she punched her ticket with a seventh-place finish on 1-meter at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships. Kurach, who was later named NAU’s Female Athlete of the Year, placed 49th at the national meet to cap her first season at NAU. In addition to earning her second straight WAC Diving Coach of the Year award, Huffman was also voted NAU’s Female Sport Coach of the Year. Led by Kurach, Huffman’s divers were pivotal in the Lumberjacks’ fourth consecutive conference championship. Kurach won her first career WAC gold medal on 3-meter while senior Alexa Geiger defended her title on 1-meter. Kurach followed Geiger’s footsteps in earning the WAC Diver of the Year honor. All five of NAU’s divers contributed points in each of the three diving events as they proceeded to account for a quarter of NAU’s winning point total. Kurach, Geiger and sophomores Raquel Gonzales and Christina Torrente each were named WAC Diver of the Week at least once during the season and combined for eight all-conference honors. Each of the four competed at the Zone Championships.

DIVING COACH The Lumberjack divers made a big splash at the WAC Championships earning Huffman the honor of 2016 WAC Diving Coach of the Year. Huffman’s divers played a critical role in NAU capturing its third straight conference championship during the 2015-16 season and were led by junior Alexa Geiger, who was awarded the WAC’s Diver of the Year award. Geiger took home the hardware after winning gold on both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards, while freshman Raquel Gonzales placed in the top eight in all three diving events. The ’Jacks put their stamp on the meet from the first individual event – placing all six of their divers in scoring positions – and never let up. For the second consecutive year, four divers combined for nine all-conference honors, and the momentum was carried over into the NCAA Zone E Championships where all six divers qualified – matching the most in school history. Senior Chelsea Jackson, a five-time WAC Diver of the Week awardee during the season, narrowly missed her bid to the NCAA Championships by placing 10th at the Zone Meet while Geiger was two spots back in 12th. At the 2015 WAC Championships, Huffman’s divers were the class of the competition, making their mark on the first day. All four of NAU’s scoring divers - juniors Chelsea Jackson and Carlye Townsend, sophomore Alexa Geiger and freshman Emma Simmonds - all placed in the top eight on 1-meter. After making a statement in the first diving event as a team, the Lumberjacks got their first gold medal of the championship when Jackson claimed the 3-meter title. In all, Huffman’s four divers accounted for nine all-conference honors, with Jackson and Geiger diving in the championship final in all three events. Huffman also mentored freshman Alyssa Loeffelman to an impressive WAC Championship performance. Although she dove as a non-scorer, Loeffelman’s preliminary scores on both springboards would have been good enough to score points in the finals. Jackson and Geiger proceeded to dive at the NCAA Zone E Meet where Jackson placed 15th on 1-meter and 18th on 3-meter. Both Jackson and Geiger earned WAC Diver of the Week honors during the season, combining for three awards from the conference office. Huffman’s divers were an integral part of NAU’s first-ever WAC Championship team in 2013-14 as all four of her divers scored points for the Lumberjacks at the conference meet. Sophomore Chelsea Jackson led the way as she placed third on all three boards to earn three All-WAC first team honors. Huffman also coached senior Jane Wakefield, sophomore Carlye Townsend and freshman Alexa Geiger to breakout performances at the WAC Championships. In her final conference meet, Wakefield scored on 1-meter and platform while Towsend earned a pair of All-WAC second team honors. Meanwhile, Geiger made a sensational debut on the conference stage placing in the top-seven on all three boards. All together, Huffman’s divers totaled eight all-conference honors. Jackson, Geiger and senior Gwen Smithberg represented NAU at the NCAA Zone E Meet highlighted by Jackson’s 15th place finish on 3-meter. That trio also combined to win four WAC Diver of the Week awards during the regular season. Prior to NAU’s championship run, Huffman earned WAC Diving Coach of the Year in 2012-13 on the heels of senior Kristy Ardavanis’ gold medal on 1-meter which marked the program’s first WAC diving championship since 2008 and first on 1-meter since 2004. Junior Gwen Smithberg also claimed victory on platform in the same meet. Ardavanis, a 10-time WAC Diver of the Week honoree in her final two seasons, would up being voted NAU’s Female Athlete of the Year and finished as an alternate for the national championship meet following a sixth-place finish on 1-meter at NCAA Zones. Huffman coached six divers to the NCAA Zone Regional Championships, the most in school history until it was matched during the 2015-16 season, in 2010-11. She earned her first WAC Diving Coach of the Year awardin 2007-08 after senior Natalie

Hughes became NAU’s first-ever gold-medal winner in diving in the WAC (3-meter) and was named the WAC Diver of the Year. In the eight years prior to joining the WAC, the Lumberjacks dominated conference competition in the NIC. NAU won 11 individual conference diving titles in eight years in the NIC women’s competition under Huffman’s guidance, and earned four conference diver-of-the-year awards (including back-to-back honors by Kate Morgan in 2002 and 2003, and Blair Buder in 2004). Huffman was named the Women’s Diving Coach of the Year four times (1997, 2002, 2003, 2004). Prior to NAU, Huffman spent two years at Clemson, where she was voted the 1996 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Diving Coach of the Year. With the Tigers, Huffman coached both men’s and women’s diving teams to winning seasons, with the women’s team being ranked in the top-25 of the national coaches’ poll in 1996. She had one ACC champion each year and took five divers to the zone meet in 1996. Huffman began her coaching career at her alma mater, Oakland University. She coached six All-Americans and three Division II national champions, being named Division II National Men’s Diving Coach of the Year in 1994. At Oakland, she coached Dario D’Fazio, who represented Venezuela in the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. As an athlete, Huffman was a seven-time All-America and two-time national champion during her career at Oakland, where she returned every time the NIC Championships were held at the Rochester, Mich., school. A 1991 graduate of Oakland, the former Nikki Kelsey was married in the summer of 2001. She gave birth to a daughter, Kayla, in the summer of 2003, and to a son, Darren, in the spring of 2005. * United States Men’s Team ** Costa Rica Team Larry Liebowitz joined the Northern Arizona swimming & diving staff in August 2016 following an illustrious 13-year stint as the head coach at Oregon State. Liebowitz’s pedigree and success at the collegiate and national team levels makes him one of the most recognizable names in the sport. In Liebowitz’s first year in Flagstaff, the Lumberjacks captured their fourth straight Western Athletic Conference title. NAU prevailed in a tightly contested meet with 615.5 points to best New Mexico State’s 551 points. Alina Staffeldt (100 and 200 butterfly) and Urte Kazakeviciute (100 and 200 breaststroke) both posted a pair of NCAA ‘B’ Standard times. During his tenure at the helm of Oregon State’s women’s swimming team, Liebowitz led the Beavers to three of their best all-time finishes at the NCAA Championships including their highest finish ever of No. 20 in 2004. Liebowitz coached seven of Oregon State’s nine all-time swimming All-Americans in addition to 47 of his student-athletes receiving Pac-12 All-Academic distinction. Liebowitz’s Oregon State career was highlighted by Saori Haruguchi’s individual 200 butterfly national championship in 2008 and Birte Steven’s runner-up finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2004. Haruguchi remains Oregon State’s lone NCAA Champion. Both Haruguchi (Japan, 2008) and Steven (Germany, 2004) com-

peted at the Summer Olympics while current student-athletes. Prior to his arrival at Oregon State, Liebowitz served as the head assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs at Southern California (USC) for eight years. While at USC, the Trojan programs never finished lower than seventh at the NCAA Championships. The USC women claimed the national championship in 1997 in his second year on the staff. His renowned resume also includes a wealth of international coaching experience. Most recently, he coached eight swimmers at the 2010 Youth Olympics and prior to that he served as the head coach of the U.S. men’s team at the 2003 World University Games. His international background also includes serving as the assistant coach for the U.S. men’s team at the Pan Am Games (1995, 1999) and the 1997 World University Games along with serving on the Costa Rican Olympic Team staff in 1998. Including Haruguchi and Steven, Liebowitz also previously coached Amy White and Mike O’Brien – both of whom were medalists at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Liebowitz also has experience at the club level, having coached the Santa Barbara Swim Club from 1989-95. His teams finished in the top 10 at Senior Nationals in five of his seven seasons. During this time, Liebowitz coached Brian Alderman (butterfly) and Richard Schroeder (breaststroke) to national championships. Both swimmers would go on to represent the U.S. at the Pan Am Games with Alderman also going on to make the U.S. teams at the Goodwill Games and the short course and long course World Championships. His coaching career began with stints with the Ferndale Barracudas Swim Club and at University of Detroit High School. Liebowitz, a native of Detroit, Mich., earned his bacher’s degree in Psychology from Oakland University in 1973. He competed in swimming for two years at Wayne State before transferring to Oakland. He is married to Mary Anne Gerzanick-Liebowitz.

She has been a familiar face around the program for several years, including serving as the voice of NAU swimming & diving performing public-address duties during the team’s regular season meets at the Aquatic and Tennis Complex. Hobbs has a long pedigree in swimming, both as a competitor and a coach. As a swimmer, she is a 15-time U.S. Masters Swimming national champion and set a Masters world record for the 50-meter freestyle in 1988. She was a 10-time All-America performer over four years at Alabama (1979-83), also winning Southeastern Conference individual titles. She was a qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1980, 1984 and 1988. She was a state sprint champion and record holder in both the 50 and 100 freestyles in Florida (1977-79) and Illinois (1976). As a coach, she has served in several capacities at the club and collegiate levels. Since 1997, she has been the head coach of the Arizona Mountain Masters club team based in Flagstaff. She also had been a men’s and women’s assistant swim coach at Illinois Wesleyan (1987-92) and a women’s assistant at Illinois State (1985-86). She has coached several club teams in Illinois, New Jersey and Pennsylvania before coming to Flagstaff. Other opportunities within the sport have come in marketing and sales. Since 1995, Hobbs has been national marketing manager for Speedo Authentic Fitness, and has worked with Dolphin International (1994-95) as national sales manager and as assistant director of team sales and promotions for The Finals Swimwear (1992-94). In addition to her coaching duties, Hobbs is also a part-time lecturer in marketing in the NAU Franke College of Business. Hobbs earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing/management from Illinois State. She is married to Dr. Brandon Cruickshank, an assistant professor of chemistry at NAU. The couple have two children, Baden and Camden.

2017 WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS/ZONE DIVING RECAP

The Northern Arizona swimming & diving team was hit hard last season. Tragedy struck the program right from the start, and the reality of losing nearly 43 percent of their point scorers for various reasons at the WAC Championships awaited them at the end of the season. Yet, when all was said and done, the Lumberjacks stood as tall as the San Francisco Peaks that graces their town. In Houston, Texas at the end of February, NAU withstood a cast of teams who were all gunning to take down the threetime defending champs. With the refusal to back down and give in, the team showcased the true spirt of a Lumberjack to raise the WAC championship trophy for the fourth consecutive year. “It was a fight from the beginning, but we gained some confidence right away and there was a sense of relief at the end,” said head coach Andy Johns. “The last night we knew it was going to get tight after the mile and the (200) backstroke, but we also knew we had the (200) butterfly so I don’t think we ever panicked. I think we felt a little pressure – wanting to win it for Hayley (Edmond) was a lot – but there was still a calmness. Our leaders really shined because we had a lot of freshmen who needed to learn a lot, and they gained valuable experience at that meet going through those situations.” The tragic loss of Hayley Edmond right at the start of the semester proved to be the driving force for the Lumberjacks’ fourth straight championship. It also wound up leaving an unexpected void in NAU’s roster - a void that joined the numerous spots to fill in the lineup left by the graduation of a tremendous senior class. But this senior trio of Alexa Geiger, Urte Kazakeviciute and Sara Lenhoff provided guidance. NAU’s junior class stalwarts – Claire Hammond, Roni Houck, Kimmy Richter and Alina Staffeldt – once again rose to the occasion in the spotlight. The upperclassmen’s determination, and performance, was critical in the extending the program’s reign atop the Western Athletic Conference. Another spectacular showing by the divers, featuring four sophomores among the unit of five was not to be overlooked though – especially this season where every point truly counted. “It was a different year for us for sure,” said Johns, who was named the WAC Co-Swimming Coach of the Year. “Even though we

didn’t have the depth, we had enough balance, especially with our divers. Our divers were amazing and you think when you lose a Chelsea Jackson and a Carlye Townsend, they’re not going to be as strong but they were great. That shows who we are as a program and we’ve been like that for a long time.” “They did what they had done all year,” said diving coach Nikki Huffman. “We didn’t have perfect performances all the time, but every time we had a couple step up extremely well. Overall, they all had great performances at the conference championships. If they didn’t have a great prelim, they had a great final or vice-versa.” Sophomore Tatiana Kurach, in her first season at NAU, carried the torch for the Lumberjack divers as she was named WAC Diver of the Year. She won gold on 3-meter on the opening night of competition and proceeded to earn all-conference finishes on 1-meter and platform to become the second Lumberjack in as many years to claim the conference’s top Diver award. Geiger, the 2016 WAC Diver of the Year, defended her 1-meter title with sophomore Christina Torrente posting her best finish at the WAC Championships with a silver medal in the same event. Along with efforts from sophomores Raquel Gonzales and Olivia Payne, the five Lumberjacks each scored in all three events totaling 156 of NAU’s winning total of 615.5 points. While the divers were taking care of business, it was up to the NAU swimmers to close the meet out on the final day and they did just that. Leading by just 34.5 points entering the final night without a diving event, Richter opened the last session with a gold medal performance in the mile freestyle – her second gold medal of the meet. Even with Richter’s win though, NAU’s lead grew slimmer going into the final individual event at just 31.5 points over New Mexico State. However, the ’Jacks dominated the 200 butterfly to put the meet out of reach highlighted by Staffeldt’s successful defense of her conference title. Behind Staffeldt were sophomore Andrea Schmidt and freshman Kate Bier who placed fourth and 10th respectively - which doubled NAU’s lead heading into the last relay. The meet ended in rousing fashion, just as it started for the Lumberjacks with a dramatic first-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay during the opening night. Following Hammond, Richter and Bier, Staffeldt swam the anchor leg and overcame a significant deficit in the final 50 yards to send the team into pandemonium. Over the course of the four-day meet, there were a number of other highlights including Richter and Staffeldt each winning their first individual golds of the meet in the 500 free and 100 fly respectively. Kazakeviciute set a new school record in the 200 breaststroke and sophomore Sarah Takach provided crucial points in the 400 individual medley in her first career championship heat finals race. The Lumberjacks may have been far off from their crushing 2016 point total of 807.5 points, but that was much of a tribute to the overall performances from New Mexico State, Idaho, Grand Canyon and North Dakota who all pushed NAU to its limits. Fortunately, the Lumberjacks’ gauntlet of a schedule leading up to the WAC Championships prepared them for the challenge. NAU faced four teams (Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Nevada) during its dual season that finished in the top 40 at the NCAA Championships. “We raced against some of the best teams in the country and that was important to learn how to race regardless where you’re ahead or behind,” Johns said. “That’s what happens at the conference meet and the upper level of competition we faced really helped us.” After the joys of the conference championships, the divers had one more task at hand with Geiger, Gonzales, Kurach and Torrente qualifying for the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships right at home in the Aquatic and Tennis Complex. she became only the second diver in school history to advance to the NCAA Championships with her seventh-place Zone finish on 1-meter. Kurach – only the fourth NCAA qualifying swimmer or diver in program history – wound up placing 49th in Indianapolis at the national championships. “We had a couple knocking on the door (at Zones) and thankfully we had Tanya qualified,” said Huffman, who picked up her second straight WAC Diving Coach of the Year nod. “That was a great experience for her and now we’re excited for next year. We graduate Lex, which will be a huge loss, but with four sophomores coming back and bringing in three freshmen, the future is nice.” Speaking of the future, despite the loss of Geiger, Kazakeviciute and Lenhoff – who completed a perfect 4-for-4 career in conference championships – NAU will return a ton of top-end talent headlined by its spectacular junior class in addition to its slew of divers. Also among the returners will be a freshman class who was counted on immensely including four conference scorers in Bier, Emily Martin, Fernanda Montiel and Erin Spielman. “We return a tremendous senior class and we’ve got some girls joining us next year who are going to help us out across the board,” Johns said. “They’ll help fill our lack of depth and next year’s sophomores would have learned a lot of over this year. We’re excited where we’re headed and now getting athletes to NCAAs is the goal.”

• Kimmy Richter and Alina Staffeldt were both named Kansas Classic All-Stars. The three-day meet featured Kansas, Iowa State, Nebraska, Northern Iowa and Arkansas-Little Rock. • Raquel Gonzales placed first on platform in the first-ever Lumberjack Diving Invitational in the Aquatic and Tennis Complex. It marked the first time NAU hosted an in-season diving invite. • Tatiana Kurach was one of three divers amongst more than 65 competitors to place in the top six in all three events at the Air Force Diving Invitational. 2017-18 NORTHERN ARIZONA SWIMMING & DIVING MEDIA GUIDE NAU HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES/NCAA PARTICIPANTS Valerie Carter (1984-87), a 2006 NAU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, didn’t know it but right after the ball dropped to start 2006, the ball started rolling on her induction. Keeping it a complete secret, Joe Carter contacted the NAU Athletic Media Relations office in early January to inquire about nominating his wife for the honor and from there, Carter’s numerous accomplishments in diving at NAU began to surface.

Carter (formely Simmons) qualified for the NCAA Championships twice, becoming the first athlete in the program to ever qualify, and also became the school record-holder in both the one and three-meter events as well as the Pac-West Conference champion in both events as a junior. Carter was the team co-captain as a senior, all-academic Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference honoree and was twice named the team’s most outstanding diver. Carter didn’t just receive a degree, pack up and leave. She has made Flagstaff her home and NAU her career. She has four different degrees from the university in physical therapy including an advanced master’s and a doctorate. Carter currently works as an associate professor in the Physical Therapy Department and also owns and operates Carter Rehabilitation in town along with her husband. April Diez-Walker (1992-96), a first-ballot inductee into the NAU Athletics Hall of Fame, was the first female swimmer to compete at the Division I Swimming and Dving Championships and is the only swimming All-American in school history. Diez-Walker was a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier and still holds three individual school records - the 500 freestyle, 1,000 freestyle and 1,650 freestyle. A 1994 NCAA All-American in the 1,650 freestyle, she finished sixth overall at the NCAA meet and placed ninth in the 500 freestyle, earning honorable mention All-America honors. She was also a championship finalist at the 1993 World University Games in Buffalo, N.Y. Diez-Walker was also named the top female scholar-athlete in the nation following the 1993-94 academic year based on her athletic and academic accomplishments (a perfect 4.00 grade point average). The former April Diez was named Female Swimmer of the Year following the 1995 Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships after winning the 1,650 free, 200 free, 500 free and 400 individual medley and setting an NAU record in the process. A native of Phoenix, she earned her degree in sociology at NAU, completed law school at the University of California, Berkeley, before moving back to Phoenix. A 2007 graduate of NAU, Alexis Buckley (2003-07) was the first female swimmer in 12 years to participate in the NCAA Championships when she qualified as a junior in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:27.12, second only to All-American April Diez’s time of 16:18.13. Buckley was the first NAU swimmer to earn a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) title, garnering two of them since the Lumberjacks joined the WAC in 2004-05. As a junior, Buckley won the 1,650 freestyle at the WAC Championships and as a senior she set a school-record time of 4:23.73, that has since been broken, en route to winning her second title in the 400 individual medley. As a freshman, Buckley also won a conference title in the 1,650 freestyle before the Lumberjacks moved to the WAC. At the 2006 NCAA Championships, Buckley placed 19th in the 1,650 freestyle and 33rd in the prelims of the 500 freestyle.

Pam Rogers, a 2007 NAU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, was the head coach for the swimming and diving program from 1983-96 and also the first coach of the program. Rogers won five Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference titles during her tenure and was responsible for the addition of the men’s program, which also won five conference titles. Rogers was the first woman in the sport of swimming and diving to be the head coach of a combined men’s and women’s Division I team. The team finished 29th at the 1994 NCAA Championships behind All-American April Diez’s performance in the 500 and 1,650 freestyle. Rogers coached 39 women’s conference champions in individual events and 47 Golden Eagle Scholar Athletes. She was a four-time All-American, a two-time national champion and an alternate for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1976, and went on to coach Arizona State to two national and four conference titles.

2017-18 NORTHERN ARIZONA SWIMMING & DIVING MEDIA GUIDE ACADEMICS 2016-17 ACADEMIC YEAR HIGHLIGHTS • The swimming & diving program received the Scholar All-America Team award from the College Swimming Coaches Association of American (CSCAA) during both the fall 2016 and spring 2017 semesters. • NAU had team cumulative grade point averages of 3.41 in the fall semester and 3.32 in the spring semester. It extended the Lumberjacks’ streak of holding a cumulative GPA above 3.20 in every semester since spring 2006. • A total of 18 Lumberjacks received the Golden Eagle Scholar-Athlete award and 14 were named WAC All-Academic selections. • Individually, Alexa Geiger and Alina Staffeldt were named CSCAA Scholar All-American Honorable Mention. It was Geiger’s third such honor and for Staffeldt, it marked her second honor of her career.

• Geiger was also selected as NAU’s NCAA Woman of the Year nominee - honoring her excellence in academic, athletics, service and leadership.

AQUATIC AND TENNIS COMPLEX

After nearly two years of construction, Northern Arizona University’s brand new Aquatic and Tennis Complex (ATC) held its grand opening on Feb. 19, 2016. The state-of-the art facility, located across the street from NAU’s Health and Learning Center, will be the new home of NAU swimming & diving and men’s and women’s tennis. Groundbreaking for the ATC was held on May 1, 2014 after the Arizona Board of Regents unanimously approved the proposal on Feb. 7, 2014. The Aquatic and Tennis Complex replaced the Wall Aquatic Center – the home of the Lumberjack swimming & diving program for the last 34 years since the pool’s opening in 1983. The 120,000 square foot ATC is more than double the size of the 50,000 square foot Wall Aquatic Center. For the NAU swimming & diving team, the ATC includes an Olympic-sized swimming pool as well as a separate diving well. In addition to 1-meter and 3-meter springboards, there is the addition of a 10-meter diving platform that the Wall Aquatic Center previously had not supported. Other features include dryland training areas and a spa. Both the NAU men’s and women’s tennis teams will enjoy the luxury of their own on-campus courts since 2007 when there were previously six outdoor courts to use. The ATC will provide the two programs with an indoor home for daily practice and home match-

es featuring six indoor courts. Previously at the mercy of Flagstaff’s unpredictable weather, NAU tennis had hosted home matches at Continental Country Club and the Flagstaff Athletic Club as well as in Sedona in recent years while resorting to the two-court Fieldhouse for an on-campus practice facility. The second phase of the ATC will provide both tennis teams with six outdoor courts adjacent to the facility. Spectator viewing decks are available for both the pool and tennis courts. Shortly after the grand opening, the Aquatic and Tennis Complex hosted the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships from March 7-9, 2016. Nearly 100 divers – both men’s and women’s – representing 25 universities spanning the Pac-12, Mountain West, WAC and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conferences competed at the qualifying meet for the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. The facility has hosted the zone qualifying meet for the NCAA Championships two years running. The first tennis match held in the ATC was on Feb. 21, 2016 when the NAU men’s tennis team posted a 7-0 victory over Western New Mexico. The NAU women’s tennis team made their debut in the facility on March 5, 2016 and splitting a doubleheader with a 5-2 win over conference rival Montana State and a narrow 4-3 loss to Emory University, the reigning Division III national runner-ups.

Flagstaff, home to the NAU swimming & diving program, has been a prominent training facility for world class athletes for years, and the lead-up to the 2016 Rio Olympics and Paralympics was not any different. In 2016, a total of 202 athletes swimming and track & field representing 30 countries trained at HYPO2 High Performance Center in Flagstaff and utitlized NAU’s world-class facilities for high altitude training. The number was a significant increase from the 152 athletes from 22 countries who trained in Flagstaff prior to the 2012 London Games. The number of medalists also grew from 18 total medalists to 22 combined between the Rio Olympics and Paralympics. In 2012, the 18 medalists spanned six countries. Four years later, the country count doubled to 12 In swimming alone, 22 athletes combined for 39 medals (10 gold, 13 silver and 16 bronze) at the Rio Games. In the Rio Paralympics, New Zealand’s Sophie Pascoe collected three gold medals among her five total. Pascoe, a training partner of former Lumberjack Hayley Edmond and current NAU swimmer Monique King, was one of three Paralympian medalists who trained in Flagstaff. Joining Pascoe were Norway’s Sarah Louise Rung, who earned two gold among five medals, and Brazil’s Andre Brasil, who totaled four medals himself in his home country.

DR. RITA CHENG • DR. LISA CAMPOS Rita Hartung Cheng serves as the 16th president of Northern Arizona University. Under her leadership, NAU has engaged in a strategic planning effort to position the university to thrive in the fast-changing environment of higher education. President Cheng’s focus is to expand on the university’s historical strengths, providing access to an affordable quality education for all students and pursuing the discovery, advancement and application of knowledge in research areas unique and important to the region. Dr. Cheng has set a bold vision of excellence for Northern Arizona University through student-centered teaching, a robust research environment, an extensive global engagement program, and inclusive support services focused on student success and completion. She is also guiding an expansion of community partnerships focused on strengthening economic and cultural vitality in the region. Northern Arizona University is at an exciting time of opportunity, transition, and growth in its academic and research mission. More than 30,300 students are enrolled in 200 undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs supported by 4,600 faculty and staff and an operating budget of $600 million. The university estimates an economic impact of nearly $1.6 billion to the State of Arizona. Under President Cheng’s leadership, research expenditures have grown by 25 % to $40 million, and undergraduate and graduate enrollment has grown by nearly 10%. President Cheng has responded to state funding challenges and enrollment growth by leading initiatives, generating administrative efficiencies, enhancing online and community campus operations, improving business operational processes and reducing costs, while protecting the quality of the academic programs. President Cheng was previously Chancellor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She spent more than 20 years on the faculty the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, serving in various administrative roles including Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. She is internationally recognized for her research in government and nonprofit accounting. Dr. Cheng earned a PhD in accounting from Temple University’s Fox School of Business and Management, an MBA from the University of Rhode Island and a Bachelors in Business Administration from Bishop’s University in Quebec. Committed to service, Dr. Cheng also serves on a variety of local and national boards.

Dr. Lisa Campos was hired in April 2012 as Northern Arizona’s Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. A 2017, SportsBusiness Journal Forty Under 40 honoree, Campos has guided the Lumberjacks to Backto-Back Big Sky Conference Presidents’ Cup trophies; an award that recognizes the department’s overall excellence in competition and in the classroom. In 2013, NAU became the fourth institution to win multiple Presidents’ Cups, winning their second (first was 2005-06); and then followed it up during the 2013-14

school year. NAU has captured 32 team conference championships during Campos’ time in Flagstaff, while 10 teams have advanced to postseason competition. The Lumberjacks’ stellar athletic achievements have led to the men’s programs winning the Big Sky All-Sports Trophy four consecutive times from 2014-17. Meanwhile, the women’s teams have captured the trophy twice in 2014 and 2017. The 2016-17 academic year was highlighted with the men’s cross country team’s NCAA Division I National Championship – the first team national title in school history and the first non-football national title in Big Sky history. With eight conference championships out of the department’s 15 NCAA teams, NAU swept the Big Sky All-Sports Trophies for the second time in Campos’ tenure. Academically, a total of 61 student-athletes earned their degrees during the 2016-17 academic year. Four student-athletes received CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, while Rene Coggins (women’s basketball) and Tyler Day (cross country/track & field) were named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in their respective sports. NAU had 123 total student-athletes earn All-Academic honors from the Big Sky and Western Athletic Conference. Additionally, Campos and the Lumberjacks continued to give back to the community with the department eclipsing 5,000 service hours for the third straight year. Campos currently sits on the prestigious NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee, a subcommittee of the new governance model. She also sits on the Board of Directors for Women’s Leaders and for the local United Way of Northern Arizona. Campos took over the leadership of the NAU Athletics Department – when she became one of 26 females and the youngest in the country to lead a Division I program at the time of her hire – after serving as the Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of Texas at El Paso from 2006-12. Currently, Campos is a member of Women’s Leaders in College Sports, National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association and Flagstaff Leadership Program. While at UTEP, she served on a number of NCAA committees. Campos holds a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from UTEP. She graduated from Colorado State University with a bachelor’s of science degree in Business Administration and a master’s of science degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education. A native of Las Animas, Colo., Campos is married to Darren D’Attilio. They live in Flagstaff with their son, Christopher.
