PRESENTACIÓN PRESENTATION LES COSTES: la casa de todos

LES COSTES: A HOME TO US ALL

ablábamos recientemente con unos amigos sobre el concepto de familia, sobre su significado, la evolución de la palabra y sus amplios matices en la sociedad actual.

Según la Real Academia de la Lengua, familia se define en su primera acepción como: f. Grupo de personas emparentadas entre sí que viven juntas. Está bien, es correcto, sin embargo, yo prefiero quedarme con su cuarta acepción: f. Conjunto de personas que comparten alguna condición, opinión o tendencia, o séptima: Grupo de personas relacionadas por amistad o trato. Personas que comparten alguna condición, amistad, trato… Ese es seguro nuestro caso, el caso de LES COSTES y de Port Ginesta, esa condición, esa relación, es la de amantes de la mar, de la naturaleza, del tempo y ritmo necesario para el disfrute de lo marítimo.

La familia de LES COSTES, es un grupo de personas, siempre heterogéneo, diferente, amplio y transversal: los surferos que buscan la ola, los bañistas en la arena tostándose al sol y disfrutando de los chiringuitos, los veleristas de regata, los moteros de la mar, los pescadores de playa, proximidad o alta mar, los amantes del buen comer en un entorno idílico, todo aquel que busca la mejor instantánea para su álbum, en definitiva aquella gente que disfruta paseando cerca del mar disfrutando del olor a salitre y del tintineo de las jarcias.

Así nació hace unos años LES COSTES, con vocación integradora y de relación costera, un litoral que une a personas, a una gente que, en el fondo de su corazón, de una manera u otra, concibe la mar como parte de su ser y se siente incluida en esta costa que es de todos, la casa de todos, vuestra casa.

Some friends and I were talking recently about the concept of family, what it means, how the word has evolved and its many applications in today’s society.

According to my Spanish Real Academia de la Lengua dictionary, the first definition of family is feminine noun, meaning: A group of people related to each other and living together.

Correct, of course, although my own preference is the fourth definition which, roughly translated, is as follows: A group of people that share a condition, opinion or tendency; or possibly the seventh: A group of people related by friendship or way of being. People that share a condition, friendship, way of being…

Undoubtedly this is our case, the case of LES COSTES and Port Ginesta, this condition, this relationship. What brings us together is our love of the sea, of nature, of the tempo and pace of life required for the full enjoyment of all things nautical.

The LES COSTES family is a group of people, always heterogeneous, different, comprehensive and transversal: the surfers, out looking for the perfect wave; bathers hanging out on the beach and soaking up the sun, sipping a beer at the beach-bar; competitive sailors; jet-ski riders; fishermen on the beaches, along the coast or on the high seas; lovers of good food in an idyllic setting; those who are looking for the best shot to add to their album… Definitively, the kind of people who get a thrill out of walking the coasts, being close to the sea, savouring the smell of the salt air the sweet rhythms of the rigging clinking and clanking against the masts.

And this is where, some years ago, LES COSTES came from, with the mission to connect people with a love of the sea and the coast, this coast that brings us all together, connecting people who, in their heart of hearts and in their different ways, conceive of the sea as part of their very being and feel bound to this coast, which belongs to us all, welcomes us all, where we feel at home.

El conjunto artístico y arquitectónico novecentista de Maricel, situado en pleno centro histórico de Sitges, fue construido entre 1910 y 1918 por Miquel Utrillo por encargo del magnate, coleccionista, mecenas y filántropo norteamericano Charles Deering. Hoy, el sueño de su artífice es un complejo dedicado a las artes, el patrimonio y a actividades culturales de toda índole.

The Maricel artistic and architectural Noucentista complex, in the historical centre of Sitges, was brought into being between 1910 and 1918 by Miquel Utrillo, who had been commissioned for this work by the American magnate, collector, patron of the arts and philanthropist Charles Deering. Today, Deering’s dream is a complex dedicated both to the arts and to heritage and cultural activities of all kinds.

a singular historia del conjunto arquitectónico de Maricel, sorprenden al visitante tanto o más que su estilo. Tiene su inicio cuando a principios del siglo XX Charles Deering descubrió la obra del pintor Ramón Casas y viajó a Barcelona para conocerle. Este le presentó al artista, crítico de arte e ingeniero Miquel Utrillo con quien estableció una gran relación que culminó en la construcción del complejo arquitectónico y en la formación de una impresionante colección de arte.

The singular history of the Maricel architectural complex is as surprising for visitors as is its style, perhaps even more so. It all began when, at the beginning of the 20th century, Charles Deering discovered the work of the Catalan painter Ramón Casas and travelled to Barcelona to meet him. Casas then presented him to the artist, art critic and engineer Miquel Utrillo, with whom Deering established a strong friendship, which culminated in the construction of this architectural complex, along with the formation of an impressive art collection.

In 1919, after visiting Cau Ferrat, the home of Santiago Rusiñol, also in Sitges, Deering, who was looking for a home, both for himself and his art collection, ended up purchasing the old

hospital of Sant Joan Baptista, with the idea of converting it into his private residence. This building was given the name “Maricel”, as a result of its views out over the sea, and also in reference to the play of the same name, written by Àngel Guimerà. Utrillo also designed a coat of arms, which is featured on all of the different buildings of the complex and serves as its emblem. This coat of arms shows a sun rising over the blue waves of the seas, and was inspired by the cover of the prayer book that Guimerà himself had presented to Rusiñol.

Deering also purchased the fishermen’s cottages, adjoining the residence, which were then adapted to provide a home for the collection of art that Utrillo was putting together, in line with the established purpose for this museum/gallery, along with its use as a mansion, with the requisite ballrooms and banqueting halls.

This is the complex that today is known as the “Palau de Maricel”.

At a later date, in 1915, Charles Deering had an overhead bridge built to connect his residence directly with the “Palau”. By the time the work was finished this part of Sitges had changed completely, having been converted into a stunning Noucentista complex that was highly praised by the leading artists and intellectuals of the time.

The splendour came to an abrupt end in 1921 when, following a rift with Utrillo, Deering returned to the United States, taking practically the whole collection with him, with many of the works:

by Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol, Joaquim Mir, Josep Maria Sert, Zurbarán, Goya, El Greco and Velázquez, among others, finally being donated to The Art Institute of Chicago, while another part remained in the possession of the Deering family and a number of the works, before being sold, were transferred to the Castle of Tamerit, which Deering had purchased in 1916. In 1933, The Museums’ Board rented the Palau de Maricel for the installation of the extension to Cau Ferrat, which was opened to the public in 1936, with a collection of paintings by the Sitges School, along with the Maritime Collection of Emerencià Roig i Raventós. In 1952 the Palau de Maricel was acquired by the Sitges Council, while in 1970 Deering’s old residence was bought by the Deputation of

Sant Joan Baptista para convertirlo en su residencia privada.

Al tiempo que se realizaban las obras, en las que se utilizaron elementos arquitectónicos y artísticos de diversas procedencias y estilos, lo que les confiere personalidad y un singular atractivo, Utrillo formó la impresionante colección de arte hispánico de Deering. El edificio recibió el nombre de Maricel por sus vistas sobre el mar y por la obra homónima del escritor Àgel Guimerà.

Utrillo lo dotó también de un escudo que se encuentra en todos los edificios y que es el emblema del conjunto: un sol naciente en rojo sobre las olas azules del mar, para el que se inspiró en el dibujo de la portada del libro “Oracions” que Guimerà había realizado para Rusiñol.

Deering también compró las pequeñas casas de pescadores situadas en el entorno de la que era su residencia porque quería que la colección de arte que Utrillo iba configurando se instalase en un lugar propio y acorde con la finalidad de museo que había previsto, además de utilizarlo como un gran palacio con salas de fiestas y recepciones. Este es propiamente el que se conoce hoy como Palau de Maricel. Posteriormente, en 1915, Charles Deering hizo construir un puente que unía su residencia con el palacio. Al finalizar las obras, el barrio había cambiado totalmente convirtiéndose en un impresionante conjunto novecentista que mereció los elogios de los artistas e intelectuales del momento.

El esplendor se apagó en 1921 cuando, por desavenencias con Utrillo, Deering regresó a Estados Unidos llevándoselo prácticamente todo. Parte de la obra —que contaba con pinturas de Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol, Joaquim Mir, Josep Maria Sert, Zurbarán, Goya, El Greco o Velázquez, entre otros— se donó al Instituto de Arte de Chicago, parte se quedó en poder de la familia Deering, y diversas obras se trasladaron al castillo de Tamarit que Deering había comprado en 1916 y posteriormente fueron vendidas. En 1933, la Junta de Museus alquiló el Palau de Maricel para instalar la ampliación del Cau Ferrat, que en 1936 se abrió al público junto con la colección de pintura sitgetana y la Col·lecció de Marineria de Emerencià Roig i Raventós. El Palau de Maricel fue adquirido por el ayuntamiento de Sitges en 1952, mientras que la antigua residencia de Deering fue comprada por la Diputació de Barcelona en 1970 para instalar en ella la colección de arte del 8

Hoy, Maricel está formado por diversos edificios a ambos lados de la calle Fonollar. Son dos grandes bloques conocidos popularmente como Maricel de Terra o Palau de Maricel y Maricel de Mar o Museu de Maricel. El conjunto comprende además Can Rocamora —edificio patrimonial y museográfico de nexo entre el Museu Cau Ferrat y el Museu de Maricel—, la Biblioteca Popular Santiago Rusiñol, inaugurada en 1936, y el Arxiu Històric de Sitges desde 1981.

En este sector cabe destacar el medio centenar de capiteles con temas variados como fábulas, personajes de la época o costumbres, realizados por el escultor Pere Jou. 9

Today, the Maricel complex consists of a number of different buildings, occupying both sides of the street Carrer Fonollar. The two main blocks are known popularly as “Maricel de Terra” (Land Maricel) or “Palau de Maricel” and “Maricel de Mar” (Sea Maricel) or “Museu de Maricel”. The complex also includes Can Rocamora, the heritage and museum building, which serves as the nexus between the Museu Cau Ferrat and the Museu de Maricel, the Popular Santiago Rusiñol Library, which was inaugurated in 1936, and the Sitges Historical Archive since 1981.

PALAU DE MARICEL Forming part of the Maricel de Terra artistic and monumental complex, as opposed to the museum part, which goes by the name of Maricel de Mar. The Saló d’Or (Gold Room), the Saló Blau (Blue Room), the Sala Capella (Chapel Room), the Sala Vaixells (Ships Room), the terraces or the cloister, with its splendid panoramic views of the Mediterranean, are the main spaces that make up the Palau. With their distinctly Noucentista style, the different spaces are marked out by singular decorative schemes that accentuate their specific individual characters.

Today the Palau plays host to institutional and cultural events such as concerts, conferences and presentations while, on the other hand, some of the spaces are rented out for company events or wedding receptions. Finally, the rooms, the terrace and the cloister are also open for the guided visits organised by Museums of Sitges every Sunday.

The majestic Saló d’Or is also used by Museums of Sitges for the organisation of different academic sessions, such as the Market of Arts Seminars, Collecting and Museums; Sitges Archaeology Seminars or the International Symposium on Noucentism.

MUSEU DE MARICEL The Museu de Maricel or Maricel de Mar occupies the building that used to be the old hospital. On the ground floor we find Deering’s dining room, where the hospital’s chapel once stood.

Utrillo gave the building a typically castellated medieval tower look, emphasising the arched doorway, the windows on the second floor and the relief of the archangel St. Michael. Utrillo also incorporated to the building architectural elements taken from a series of Catalonia’s historical buildings, from different periods, conferring on it a dramatically eclectic look.

EL PALAU DE MARICEL

Integrado en el conjunto artístico y monumental de Maricel, el Palau es conocido también como como Maricel de Terra, para diferenciarlo del museo, denominado Maricel de Mar. El Saló d’Or, el Saló Blau, la Sala Capella, la Sala Vaixells, las terrazas o el claustro — desde donde se puede observar una espléndida panorámica del Mediterráneo— son los principales espacios que estructuran el Palau. De estilo marcadamente novecentista, las diversas salas se distinguen por una singular decoración, que acentúan su particular carácter.

El Palau es hoy sede de acontecimientos institucionales y culturales como conciertos, conferencias o presentaciones. Por otro lado, algunos de sus espacios acogen eventos de empresas que lo alquilan para su uso, así como bodas civiles. Y, por último, las salas, la terraza y el claustro son accesibles a las visitas guiadas que Museus de Sitges organiza cada domingo.

El majestuoso Saló d’Or es el espacio utilizado por Museus de Sitges para la organización de diferentes sesiones académicas, como las Jornadas del Mercado del Arte, coleccionismo y museos, la Jornada de Arqueología de Sitges o el Simposio Internacional sobre el Novecentismo.

EL MUSEU DE MARICEL

El Museu de Maricel o Maricel de Mar ocupa el espacio que había sido el antiguo hospital. En la planta baja, el comedor ocupó la capilla del antiguo hospital. Utrillo le dio al edificio una estampa típica de torre medieval almenada, en la que destacan la puerta de medio punto, las ventanas del segundo piso y el relieve del arcángel San Miguel. Eventos en un entorno singular Events in a Singular Setting Palau de Maricel offers suitable conditions for the celebration of a wide range of company events, concerts, recitals, conferences, weddings, banquettes and other formal occasions. The Saló d’Or, is the building’s most solemn space, with a capacity for up to 100 people, ideal for civil weddings, while the Saló Blau is a multipurpose space, ideal for cocktail parties, conferences and recitals.

At the top of the building there is also a marvellous belvedere, looking out over the Mediterranean, while the terraces and the cloister are both unique settings for occasions requiring different formats.

El Palau de Maricel, reúne las condiciones adecuadas para acoger eventos de empresa, conciertos, recitales, conferencias, bodes, banquetes y todo tipo de actos protocolarios. El Saló d’Or, el espacio más e solemne del edificio, posee una capacidad de hasta 100 personas y es ideal para bodes civiles, mientras que el Saló Blau es un espacio polivalente donde se pueden llevar a cabo cócteles, conferencias o recitales.

En la parte superior del edificio, con un mirador privilegiado del mar Mediterráneo, las terrazas y el claustro convierten lugares únicos para actos de diferente formato.

El Museu de Maricel muestra un itinerario artístico completo desde el siglo X hasta el realismo y figuración de la primera mitad del siglo XX a través de las colecciones de pintura románica, gótica y tallas renacentistas del doctor Jesús Pérez-Rosales y la pinacoteca de la Villa de Sitges, e incluye desde esculturas y retablos del románico y el gótico, hasta obras pertenecientes al neoclasicismo (Marià Fortuny), y al modernismo (Rusiñol, Casas, Llimona, Utrillo...). También alberga la colección de objetos de marina de Emerencià Roig, especialista en temas marítimos e historiador, que recoge dibujos, maquetas, instrumentos náuticos y artes de pesca. LA GENIALIDAD DE CERDÀ The Eixample: Cerdà’s Vision

Many of the original guidelines for the Cerdà Plan, originally approved in 1859, were never applied, while the interests of the owners and speculation ended up almost completely perverting the original idea of the Plan’s creator, the engineer Ildefons Cerdà. Despite everything, the building of the resulting Eixample, or the Extension (Ensanche) as it was known, multiplied by10 the surface area of a city that up until that time had been constrained by its walls, and continues to serve as a reference and the most important urban transformation in the history of Barcelona.

El Plan de Reforma y Ensanche de la Ciudad de Barcelona, conocido como el Pla Cerdà, se considera un proyecto pionero en la evolución del urbanismo moderno. Pero su desarrollo no fue fácil y ya desde el principio y a lo largo de su implementación sufrió numerosas transformaciones.

The Plan for the Reform and Extension of the City of Barcelona, which became known as the Cerdà Plan, is considered a pioneering project in the evolution of modern urban development. Yet from the very beginning the plan encountered resistance, which continued throughout its development and resulted in the introduction of numerous transformations.

UNA CIUDAD ASFIXIADA

that had been built on the site of the demolished El Born district to control the rebellious city. The population density in Barcelona’s, in 1850 there were 187,000 inhabitants making it one of the most tumultuous cities in Europe, the lack of a sewage system, or even running water, the concentration of industry and the permanence of the cemeteries, focuses of infection, alongside the churches, the contamination of the well water and a series of virulent epidemics, such as yellow fever in 1821, causing over 8,000 deaths, or outbreaks of cholera in 1834, 1854 and 1865, totalling over 13,000 deaths.

Moreover the population were concentrated in streets that were narrow, unhealthy, badly ventilated and even worse lit, with 40% of total urban space being occupied by seven barracks, 11 hospitals, 40 convents and 27 churches.

Todo ello hacía imprescindible que la ciudad creciese más allá de las murallas, por lo que el ayuntamiento convocó un concurso que ganó en 1841 el proyecto “Abajo las murallas” del médico e higienista Pedro Felipe Monlau. Tras los sucesos de octubre de 1841, en que la Junta de Derribo demolió parte de la fortaleza de la Ciudadela y la insurrección de noviembre de 1842, que acabó con el bombardeo de la ciudad por el general Espartero desde el castillo de Montjuïc, el conflicto de la ciudad con el Ministerio de la Guerra siguió y el proyecto de expansión de la ciudad sobre los terrenos militares no edificables se paralizó hasta que doce años más tarde el ministro de hacienda Pascual Madoz, en agosto de 1854, decretó el 19

All of this meant that it was essential for the city to be unbounded and allowed to spread out beyond its walls. As a result, the City Council finally made a call for tenders in 1841, which was won by the project “Down with the Walls”, presented by the doctor and hygienist Pedro Felipe Monlau. EL CERDÀ MÁS POLÍTICO The engineer, Ildefons Cerdà i Sunyer (Centelles 1815-Cantabria 1876), was a man of many talents, who did far more than just the author of the reference work “General Theory of Urban Planning”, which led him to be considered one of the founders of modern urban planning, and paved the way for his being awarded the implementation of the urban reform of 19th century Barcelona, which became known as the Cerdà Plan and gave rise to the city’s Eixample district. While he was an outstanding engineer and urban developer, he was also a jurist, an economist, a military man and a politician. Influenced by the Utopian Socialism of Etienne Cabet, he became a member of the Federal Democratic Republican Party and his progressive beliefs led him to serve as a deputy in the Spanish Parliament in 1850, as a Councillor in the Barcelona city Council and as Vice-President of the Deputation, from where he was active in the proclamation of the First Republic in 1873. »Ildefons Cerdà en He was imprisoned on two occasions un retrato de Martí for his political ideas. El ingeniero Ildefons Cerdà i Sunyer (Centelles 1815-Cantabria 1876), fue un hombre polifacético cuya actividad fue mucho más allá de escribir la “Teoría general de la urbanización”, obra de referencia que lo llevó a ser considerado uno de los fundadores del urbanismo moderno, y de ser el autor de la reforma urbanística de la Barcelona del XIX conocida como el Pla Cerdà, que dio lugar al actual Eixample de la ciudad.

Destacó como ingeniero y urbanista, pero también como jurista, economista, militar y político. Influenciado por el socialismo utópico de Etienne Cabet y miembro del Partido Republicano Democrático Federal, su pensamiento progresista le llevó a ser diputado en las Cortes españolas en 1850, regidor del ayuntamiento de Barcelona y vicepresidente de la Diputación desde donde contribuyó a proclamar la primera República en 1873 y estuvo encarcelado en dos ocasiones por su participación política. Fue también el autor de la “Monografía estadística de la clase obrera en Barcelona, en 1856”, un estudio sociológico que se encuentra en la base de sus teorías urbanísticas.

Se entiende así la antipatía que despertaba entre la burguesía y los estamentos locales. Acabó arruinado por los honorarios que le debían el Estado y el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona y no se le reconoció una calle principal con su nombre hasta la década de 1960 cuando se le dio su nombre a la actual plaza Cerdà.

El 4 de septiembre la reina Isabel colocaba la primera piedra en lo que es hoy la plaza de Cataluña.

EL PLA CERDÀ

Cerdà concibió su plan, pionero en el urbanismo moderno, en base a los que se denomina una cuadrícula hipodámica, articulada en calles paralelas de geometría estricta, solo interrumpida por las grandes avenidas que cortaban la malla en diagonal. Las manzanas eran octogonales, de 113,3 metros de longitud con chaflanes de 15 metros a 45º orientados en sentido norte-sur y este-oeste para facilitar la circulación y la visibilidad. Cerdà se adelantaba al futuro, ya que en aquella época todavía no se habían inventado los vehículos a motor.

La anchura prevista de las calles en el plan de 1859 era de 20, 30 y 60 metros y preveía construir solo dos lados de cada manzana dejando en el interior una zona verde gracias a la cual todas las viviendas tenían garantizada la luz directa, el sol y la doble ventilación desde el patio interior y desde la calle. La anchura de 20 metros y la altura de 16 eran las adecuadas por la latitud de la ciudad para que los edificios nunca impidiesen el sol a las fachadas de enfrente, ni siquiera a las plantas bajas.

demolition of the walls. At the same time the City Council set up the Extension Commission, which included representatives of industry along with architects, such as Josep Fontseré. In 1855 the Minister of Development instructed Cerdà to draw up a Plan for Barcelona.

Cerdà, on his own account, drew up an urban development plan that he based on his ideas concerning hygiene and equality, and in 1859 he received definitive instructions from the Central Government to draw up a complete study for the extension, while the City Council in turn opened a call for tenders, which was won

by Antonio Rovira i Trias, based on a circular grid radiating out from a centre in what is now Plaça Catalunya. This differed from the Cerdà Plan, which was based on a strictly Hippodamus grid, consisting of rectangular city blocks, to be known as “manzanas” each one containing a central patio or gardens. The Spanish Minister of Development finally decided to go ahead with the Cerdà Plan and, in June 1859 it was approved by Royal Decree with the work being scheduled to start in July 1860. On 4th September Queen Isabel laid the first stone in what is, today, Plaça Catalunya.

THE CERDÀ PLAN The engineer Cerdà drew up a plan that was pioneering in terms of modern urban planning, based on a Hippodamus grid, laid out on the basis of a strictly geometric network of parallel streets, interrupted solely by a few grand avenues, cutting diagonally across it. The 113.3 metre octagonal blocks, with their 15 metre, 45º chamfers, facing north/south and east/west were designed both to aid circulation and contribute to visibility. In this sense the concept was well ahead of its time, given that motor vehicles had not yet been invented.

The widths of the street, as indicated in the 1859 plan, were to be 20, 30 and 60 metres, while the original idea was only to build on two sides of each of the blocks, leaving their interior patios as green zones and guaranteeing both direct sunlight and ventilation from both the street side and the interior patio. 20 metros, along with a maximum height of 16 metres for the buildings, was designed to ensure, at this latitude, that the buildings on one side of the street would never block the sun from the façades on the other side, not even at ground floor level.

DESIGN AND LAYOUT OF THE BLOCKS For the layout of these city blocks Cerdà designed two basic forms, one in which the buildings on the two sides were made up of two parallel lines, on opposite sides, leaving a large rectangular space to be set aside for gardens. The other form consisted of two lines that would form an “L” shape, occupying two contiguous sides of the block, and again leaving a large rectangular shape to be set aside for gardens.

The succession of blocks of the first type would have resulted in a long series of gardens, crossed by streets, while the planned grouping of four “L” shaped blocks would have presented a large square of buildings framing four gardens and criss-crossed by two streets.

The maximum height of 16 metres corresponded to four storeys.

Moreover, there was also supposed to be a market every 900 metres, a park every 1,500 metres, three hospitals, one slaughterhouse, a cemetery, a large green space, 10,000 trees planted in the streets (one every 8 metres), 31 churches and a railway running through. EL DISEÑO DE LAS MANZANAS Dentro del espacio de cada manzana, Cerdà concibió dos formas básicas para situar los edificios: una presentaba dos bloques paralelos situados en los lados opuestos, dejando en su interior un gran espacio rectangular destinado a jardín y la otra presentaba dos bloques unidos en forma de “L” situados a dos lados contiguos de la manzana, quedando en el resto un gran espacio cuadrado también destinado a jardín.

La sucesión de manzanas del primer tipo daba como resultado un gran jardín longitudinal que atravesaba las calles y la agrupación de cuatro manzanas del segundo tipo, convenientemente dispuestas, formaba un gran cuadrado edificado atravesado por dos calles perpendiculares y con sus cuatro jardines unidos en uno.

La altura máxima de los edificios de 16 metros se corresponde con una casa de cuatro pisos, y contemplaba un mercado cada 900 metros, un parque cada 1.500 metros, tres hospitales, un matadero, un cementerio, una gran zona verde, 100.00 árboles en las calles (uno cada ocho metros), 31 iglesias, la trama viaria del ferrocarril y la industria situada cerca de los ríos que flanquean la ciudad, el Llobregat y el Besós.

that flank the city, the Llobregat and the Besós. Four years later, perhaps yielding to the pressure of the land owners, who were keen to maximise their investment and the development potential of the land, whether or not such was a reaction to the rationalist, egalitarian and non-hierarchical nature of the Plan, which represented an affront to the ideas of the bourgeoisie, who were looking towards other modern cities such as Paris or Washington, Cerdà finally agreed to modify the project, increasing the amount of land to be built on for each block and closing them off on their open sides. The central patios also ended up being occupied by low, onestory buildings, set aside for workshops and small business, and putting an end to the idea of the gardens. The height of the buildings also ended up being modified, with heights of up to 20 metres being allowed, on the basis of through additional storeys, known as “remontes”. The façades of these additional storeys were set back, towards the interior of the patios, by a distance equivalent to their height, which meant that, with the sun at 45º, the shade did not affect the buildings opposite. On occasions this system was taken advantage of to add two additional storeys, although with lower ceilings, vastly increasing the development potential. This was the origin of Barcelona’s now much cherished attic and upper-attic flats.

While the bourgeoisie, to begin with, sought to install themselves in the properties lining the wide avenues, such as those now known as Passeig de Gràcia, Rambla de Catalunya or Carrer Balmes, among others, located on the right hand side of the extension, choosing the larger, noble flats, which occupied the “Principal” floor (actually the first floor), with their bay windows; today it is the attic flats, originally the result of speculative pressures and reserved for tenants with less acquisitive power, that have now become as coveted as any Manhattan apartment with a view of the Hudson.

Cuatro años más tarde el propio Cerdà, quizá cediendo a las presiones de los propietarios de los terrenos para favorecer la inversión y la edificabilidad, ya sea por el carácter igualitario, racionalista y no jerárquico del plan que chocaba con las ideas de la propia burguesía que tenía como referentes ciudades como París o Washington, modificó el proyecto aumentando la superficie edificable de cada manzana, cerrándolas por los lados abiertos. La zona central se ocupó con edificios bajos, destinados a talleres y pequeñas industrias, desapareciendo los jardines.

También se modificó la altura máxima de 16 metros llevándola a 20 metros gracias los denominados “remontes”.

Con esta nueva altura, retrasando las fachadas de los pisos altos hacia el interior del edificio en la misma medida que la altura del piso, con el sol a 45° la sombra del remonte no afectaba a los edificios enfrentados. Esto permitió remontar dos pisos en cada manzana, aunque con techos más bajos, y aumentar notablemente la edificabilidad. Nacían así los preciados áticos y sobreáticos.

Y si al principio la preferencia de la burguesía instalada en las grandes avenidas como el actual Paseo de Gracia, la Rambla de Catalunya o la Calle Balmes entre otras, así como en la denominada “derecha del ensanche”, era por los denominados pisos principales con sus glorietas, hoy aquellos remontes denominados áticos, surgidos de la presión especulativa, y reservados a los inquilinos con menor poder adquisitivo, son tan codiciados como un apartamento en Manhattan con vistas al Hudson.

Mundialmente conocido por su apodo, Iomar do Nascimiento - Mazinho (Santa Rita, Brasil 1966) ha dedicado toda su vida al fútbol. Sus hijos Thiago y Rafinha Alcántara, ambos formados en La Masia del Barça, juegan hoy en el Bayern de Munich y en el Inter de Milán. A sus 52 años, se ha asentado en Gavà y dirige su propia empresa, The Player Management, dedicada no solo a la representación de sus dos hijos sino también de otros jóvenes valores.

Iomar do Nascimiento (Santa Rita, Brazil 1966), known all over the world by his nickname Mazinho has dedicated his whole life to football. His sons, Thiago and Rafinha Alcántara, both formed in Barcelona’s La Masia academy, currently play for Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. Now 52, Mazinho has settled in Gavà, where he runs his own company, The Player Management, representing not only his children but other young talents too.

on Mazinho y con su amigo del alma, Mimmo, acompañados por la dirección de Port Ginesta, compartimos un arroz de bogavante en la marisquería Santos. Hablamos de fútbol, pero también de su trayectoria personal. Mimmo le trajo un poco engañado —no es fácil sentar a la mesa a un futbolista como Mazinho— pero él se lo tomó con una gran sonrisa dispuesto a contestar a todas nuestras preguntas.

“Yo soy del Barça”, responde entre risas a nuestra primera pregunta. “No puede ser de otra forma por mis hijos, pero en realidad soy del Celta de Vigo”, ríe. Pasó cuatro temporadas en el Celta donde dejó un gran recuerdo en la época dorada del equipo, que se ganó el nombre de EuroCelta. “Era un equipo con buenos jugadores, barato y con un juego bonito. Mi mejor etapa fue el 97-98, cuando conseguimos poner el equipo en el top del futbol europeo”.

SIEMPRE CAMBIANDO Empezó a los 13 años en el Santa Cruz de Recife, a los 16 pasó al Vasco da Gama de Río, emigró a la liga italiana a los 24 con el Lecce y a los 25 ya jugaba en el Fiorentina. Regresó al Brasil para jugar con el Palmeiras de Sao Paulo en 1992. Después de ganar el mundial con 27

With Mazinho and his close friend, Mimmo, and in the company of the Port Ginesta management, we shared a lobster rice at the seafood restaurant Santos and talked about football, and also about his life. Mimmo had brought his friend along under false pretences, it’s not easy to get a lunch date with a footballer like Mazinho, but he took it all in his stride, offering us a big smile and was happy to answer all our questions.

“I’m a Barça fan”, he says with a chuckle, in answer to our first question. “I can’t be any other way because of my boys, but really my heart is with Celta de Vigo”, he laughs. He played at Celta for four years, during the team’s golden age when they were known as EuroCelta, and is fondly remembered.

“It was a team with good players, cheap, we played the beautiful game. The best season was 97-98, when we were one of the top teams in all of Europe”.

ALWAYS CHANGING I started out at 13, playing for Santa Cruz de Recife, at 16 I went to Vasco da Gama de Río, then emigrated to the Italian league at 24, with Lecce, and by the time I was 25 I was playing at Fiorentina.

With 35 caps for Brazil, as well as winning the US World Cup in 94 he also won the America Cup in 89, and a runner’s up medal in 91.

So how do you survive so many professional changes? “You get used to it”, says Mazinho. “Football players never play for too long in one team. Guys who are more than 5 or 6 years in one club are rare. The longest I was at any club was at Celta, but usually it was just for a couple of years”.

But what about the family? “That’s the job”, he says. “We make the sacrifice that the family also makes, because of the job. It’s hard, but thanks to god the family adapted to all the different places and we’re happy with the way things went”.

Pero ¿Y la familia? “Es el trabajo”, dice. “Nosotros hacemos el sacrificio que la familia también hace por nuestro trabajo. Es difícil, pero gracias a Dios la familia se ha adaptado en todos los sitios y nosotros estamos contentos con esta trayectoria”.

A DECISIVE WORLD CUP

UN MUNDIAL DECISIVO

There are decisive moments in the life of every footballer, and Mazinho is no exception. Winning the 94 World Cup in the US represented a giant leap, both for him and the country. “It was very rewarding. We had an enormous problem with the economy in Brazil, and we’d also just lost Ayrton Senna. The victory served to mitigate the suffering of the Brazilian public as a whole. After a 24-year wait we won the World Cup again. It was a generation that overcame many difficulties and achieved great things for Brazil, after years without success”.

“For me,” he confesses “it represented a brutal personal change, the two trophies with Brazil were important because I had to play out of my true position. I was a midfielder and in the America Cup 89 they had me playing at right back, in the World Cup 90 as a full back, and in 94, with the national team, in front of the back four. After that my position became that of a defensive midfielder, which was really important. Two major trophies in different positions”.

From a historical perspective, Mazinho then analysed the contrasts between Brazilian and Spanish football. “There are many differences, but we’ve swapped roles. The way Spain play football today is the way that Brazil used to play, and the way Brazil play today is the way that Spain used to play. World champions five times playing the ball.

Europe has assimilated this way of playing”.

So it’s hardly strange that Mazinho has no doubts when we ask him if Spanish football should change anything. “I don’t think so”, he exclaims emphatically, “I think European football is the most attractive that there is, there’s a lot of skill, a lot of ball play, it’s perfectly adapted to players from anywhere in the world”.

Hay momentos cruciales en la vida de todo futbolista y Mazinho no es una excepción. Ganar el Mundial del 94 en Estados Unidos supuso un gran salto para él y para el país. “Fue muy gratificante. Teníamos un problema muy gordo con la economía en el Brasil, además habíamos perdido a Ayrton Senna. La victoria sirvió para mitigar todo el dolor que tenía el público brasileño. Tras 24 años conseguimos el mundial. Fue una generación que supero muchas dificultades y consiguió cosas importantes para el Brasil, tras años sin éxitos”.

“Para mí —confiesa— supuso un cambio personal brutal, los dos títulos con Brasil fueron importantes porqué jugué fuera de posición. Yo era medio y me fui a la Copa América en el 89 como lateral derecho, al Mundial del 90 en Italia como lateral, y en el 94 en la selección del campeonato del mundo como medio centro.

A partir de ahí ya jugué como medio centro por interior, y eso fue realmente lo más importante. Dos grandes conquistas mundiales en posiciones diferentes”.

En una perspectiva histórica, Mazinho abre la mirada para analizar los contrastes entre el fútbol brasileño y el español. “Hay muchas diferencias. Cambiamos los roles. Lo que juega hoy España era el futbol brasileño de antiguamente y lo que juega hoy Brasil es lo que jugaba España antes. Cinco veces capeones del mundo jugando la pelota. Europa ha digerido toda esta situación de juego”.

No es extraño pues que Mazinho no tenga dudas cuando le preguntamos si debería cambiar algo en el fútbol español. “Creo que nada”, afirma con rotundidad. “Es el fútbol europeo más atractivo que existe. Un fútbol técnico, que sortea mucha pelota. Está perfectamente adaptado a cualquier jugador del mundo”.

Los hijos de Mazinho, Thiago y Rafinha, se criaron en la cantera del Barça. Cuando ya vino para Barcelona trajo a Thiago con 14 años.

En 2006 llegó Rafinha con 13 años y ya se quedaron en la Masia.

Había buenas razones para ello. “Barcelona tenía la mejor cantera y la mejor formación. Y el sistema de juego que tenían tanto Thiago como Rafinha se adaptaban muy bien. Una de las cosas más importantes de la Masia es que no solo apretaba el fútbol sino también los estudios”.

Si los estudios eran clave en los planes de Mazinho para sus hijos, no lo era menos el cultivo de los valores personales y de la actitud. “Son chicos muy normales, siempre procuran ayudar a otras persones, son muy alegres, siempre están de broma... Conservan las amistades de pequeños... En cuanto a lo deportivo han demostrado haber adquirido unas condiciones técnicas y físicas muy buenas”.

LOS VALORES A CULTIVAR Quisimos profundizar un poco más y le preguntamos qué valores destacaría en una charla con jóvenes. Aquí, el internacional se pone serio. “Cuando cerré mi carrera, volví a España y lo primero que hice fue una escuela de fútbol. Y analizando el fútbol gallego y 29

When he first came to Barcelona he brought Thiago, then 14, with him, and in 2006 Rafinha, then 13, joined him, with both of them staying at the Barcelona academy, La Masia. There were good reasons for this. “Barcelona had the best youth teams and the best training. And also, because of the way they played, both Thiago and Rafinha adapted really well. One of the most important things about La Masia is that it was not all about football, school studies were also important”.

If education was a key factor in Mazinho’s plans for his children, the cultivation of personal values and the right attitude also were.

“They’re both really normal kids, good friends to their friends, always willing to lend a helping hand, happy, they’re always kidding around... They still have the same friends as when they were little, even from Vigo... And in terms of football they’ve both shown that they’ve got plenty of skill and are physically in great condition”.

VALUES TO CULTIVATE We wanted to take a closer look at this so we asked him what values he’d stress in a chat with young people. Here he got serious, “When I stopped playing I came back to Spain, and the first thing I did was

set up a football school. And after analysing both Galician and Spanish football I found two main difficulties: the fundamentals and three-way coordination. I started off giving talks at small clubs, because the most important thing -and this is what I told my boys- is to have fun. They’re kids, there’s no way that parents should be thinking of their kids as an investment... The most important thing for a kid is kicking the ball, having fun... Because that’s what football is all about. Having fun, while being determined, and letting kids grow up, at their own pace”.

This philosophy is clearly reflected in his professional activity as owner and director of The Player Management, a company that represents his children, along with other young talents. “We have 5 or 6 kids and we also do a lot of work with their parents, trying to make sure the kids don’t end up with the kind of anxiety that so many kids today suffer from. The parents have to be educated to help make sure that their kids develop properly. It’s the main problem we face today”, he concludes.

In his day-to-day work Mazinho collaborates with many clubs as an

Hace falta educar a los padres para ayudar a que los niños evolucionen correctamente. Es el principal problema que tenemos hoy”, concluye.

DE BARCELONA A GAVÀ Y PORT GINESTA Llegó a Gavà un poco por casualidad. “Vivía en Barcelona —explica— y surgió aquí una pachanga, un partido entre amigos, y me invitaron. Me encantaba. Pase a venir cada día a la playa de Castelldefels a correr. En 2009 volví para aquí y me quedé en Gavà”.

Mazinho frecuenta también Port Ginesta. Le encantan los barcos aunque, dice con ironía, “el mejor barco es el de los amigos”.

“Me gusta estar en el mar”, afirma con entusiasmo. “Además, casi siempre he jugado en ciudades que tienen mar”.

Por eso le gusta pasear por la marina. “A veces vengo directamente aquí en vez de quedarme en Gavà. Me gusta mirar los barcos. Hay buenos restaurantes, con buena gente... Se vive muy bien y la tranquilidad es fundamental”—concluye.

Le pedimos a Mazinho una palabra que defina Port Ginesta.

“Pasión”, dice sin dudar. Y es que hoy, además de volver a Port Ginesta, ha conocido al equipo que lo gestiona en el día a día. ¿Le veremos con más frecuencia? pregunta Rodrigo de Febrer, Capitán de Port Ginesta. “Claro que sí. Me ha encantado aunque Mimmo me haya hecho una pequeña encerrona”. Mimmo se ríe: “Si es que Mazinho es una gran persona, un gran amigo, el mejor que pueda haber”.

No cabe duda que todos los que nos hemos sentado alrededor de la mesa con él estaríamos de acuerdo. ¿Que quién debería ganar el Mundial? España, por supuesto.

He ended up in Gavà by accident. “I was living in Barcelona” he explains” and somebody organised a bit of a pachanga (a kick about) with some friends, and they asked me to come along. I loved it. I ended up coming down to the beach at Castelldefels to do a bit of running, get my colour back and then home again. In 2009, when I came back here, I decided that I’d stay in Gavà”.

Mazinho is also a regular visitor to Port Ginesta. He loves boating but, with irony, argues that, “The best boat is the one that belongs to your friend”. Enthusiastically he insists, “I like the sea, almost everywhere I ever played was next to the sea”.

And that’s why he likes strolling around the marina, “Sometimes I come straight here, rather than staying in Gavà. I like to look at the boats, there are good restaurants, good people... Life is good and a bit of peace and quiet is fundamental”, he concludes.

We asked him for a word that he thought would define Port Ginesta.

“Passion”, he says without hesitating. And today, as well as coming back to Port Ginesta, he has got to know the people in charge of the marina’s day-to-day running.

Will we be seeing you here more often? asks Rodrigo de Febrer, the Port Ginesta Harbourmaster. “Of course you will. It’s been great, although Mimmo played a bit of a trick on me”. Mimmo laughs, “It’s just that Mazinho’s such a great guy, a great friend, the best you could have”. No doubt about it, everyone at the table was in absolute agreement with that.

So who should win the World Cup? “Spain, of course. I’ve got my son playing for them”.

lantar un árbol, tener un hijo, escribir un libro… pamplinas.

Ninguna de estas cosas se parecía a la idea de Jean sobre lo que un hombre debe hacer en la vida. A sus treinta y cinco años se sentía inquieto, se sentía vivo. Su trabajo de administrativo no le proporcionaba más emociones que las de un despertador sonando a las seis de la mañana, discusiones de tráfico en automóvil y largas colas frente al mostrador que atendía. Era amante de sus amigos, pero la vida misma, las obligaciones, los compromisos y las familias limitaban todas sus ilusiones. Jean se sentía vacío. Su desánimo y su valentía fueron todo lo que necesitó para tomar la decisión de hacer aquello que tantas veces había hecho en sueños: lanzarse a navegar en solitario.

Plant a tree, father a child, write a book… Baloney! None of this had anything to do with Jean’s idea about what man should do with his life. He was thirty-five years old and he felt restless, he felt alive. His work as a clerk awakened no more emotion in him than an alarm clock going off at six o’clock in the morning, getting into traffic arguments in his car and the endless queues that stretched out in front of the counter where he worked. While he was a friend to his friends, life itself, its obligations and commitments, the family, represented a restriction of all his hopes and dreams. Jean felt empty and his despondency, accompanied by a certain recklessness, was enough to push him into finally making the decision, a decision he had so often made in his dreams, to take the plunge and become a

Muchas dudas asaltaban a Jean. No era un hombre solitario, al contrario, le gustaba compartir su vida con los demás, pero precisamente eso era cada vez más difícil. Con su edad se sentía físicamente fuerte, con experiencia y cultura para emprenderlo.

Pensó que llenaría su soledad conociendo nueva gente a lo largo de su viaje.

No les voy a aburrir contándoles la preparación de su aventura. Jean era un hombre cabal, previsor y experto regatista, conocía bien su barco y las necesidades de tal viaje. Así que, llegado el día, había organizado su marcha y simplemente zarpó.

Muchas ideas pasaron por su cabeza en su primer día de navegación. La primera, naturalmente, fue qué rumbo tomar.

Valoró todas las posibilidades y sin dudarlo puso rumbo hacia Santa Águeda, una pequeña isla en el Océano Atlántico sobre la que había leído en una ocasión, no recordaba muy bien dónde, sobre sus playas, sus gentes amigables y hospitalarias y su acogedor puerto deportivo, Port Raimat.

Puso rumbo 235º ayudado por su sistema de navegación por satélite, pero se entretuvo también calculándolo por métodos tradicionales. Halló la declinación magnética, aplicó el desvío de su aguja, perfectamente calibrada para la ocasión, estimó el abatimiento y la corriente, y comprobó que... —¡caramba!— no coincidía con todo lo que el GPS le indicaba. No se sorprendió, la diferencia era escasa, apenas dos grados. Tuvo tentaciones de calcular la derrota ortodrómica, pero renunció a ello.

Navegó durante doce largos días, con vientos por través de estribor. Ni una sola virada, ni una sola trasluchada. Solo algunas roladas desde el descuartelar hasta la aleta. La velocidad del viento no fue muy variable y lo que es peor, tampoco fue intensa. Ya se imaginan ustedes que ello sólo contribuyó a que Jean se aburriera como una ostra. Pero la recompensa llegó al avistar Santa Águeda en el horizonte. Una gran sonrisa se dibujó en su rostro.

Apareció radiante. Ni siquiera una neblina. Parecía iluminada desde dentro. Sintió en el estómago una sensación como de hambre, que no era sino la emoción del primer contacto con otras tierras, con otras gentes, alcanzadas por su velero, con sus manos y con la ayuda del piloto automático.

Según se acercaba, el agua parecía más y más transparente, mostrándole los fondos en todo su esplendor, fauna y flora le transmitían vida en esas últimas millas que estaba disfrutando como ninguna.

La bocana de acceso a Port Raimat se encontraba en la parte sur de la isla, protegida de los vientos y corrientes predominantes.

Allí se dirigió.

—Port Raimat, Port Raimat, aquí Misterioso, Misterioso, Misterioso, ¿me reciben?

Cambio.

—Adelante Misterioso, le recibimos alto y claro, y le damos la bienvenida a Santa Águeda.

La sonrisa de Jean casi se le salió de la cara. —¡Qué amables!—. Rápidamente le asignaron un amarre, bien situado, 33

long distance, single-handed sailor.

Nevertheless, Jean was riddled with doubts. He wasn’t a solitary kind of guy, in fact the opposite was true, he loved sharing his life with people.

Yet it was precisely this that was becoming increasingly more difficult.

He felt strong and fit enough for his age, with the experience and culture required to take the challenge on, and he figured he’d counteract the solitude by getting to know new people during his voyages.

I won’t bore you with the details of his preparations for this great adventure. Jean was level headed, farsighted and an expert sailor. He knew his boat and he knew what he’d need on the voyage. So when the day came, having organised everything to the last detail, he simply cast off and sailed away.

A wild tumult of ideas passed through his head on his first day at sea, starting off, naturally enough, with what course to set. Having first weighed up all of the possibilities he decided, without a second thought, to head for Santa Águeda, a small island in the Atlantic that he’d read about once, though he couldn’t remember exactly where, about its beaches, the friendly and hospitable people and its welcoming marina, Port Raimat.

He set a course of 235º west, with the assistance of his satnav system, though he also entertained himself by calculating the course using traditional methods. He found the magnetic declination, calculated the deviation of his needle (perfectly calibrated for the occasion), estimated leeway and current, and discovered... “Sod it!” that this didn’t exactly coincide with what the satnav indicated. Mind you this wasn’t a big surprise; and anyway the difference was small, just a couple of degrees. He was tempted to try and calculate the great circle route, but in the end decided against.

He sailed for twelve long days, born along by a starboard wind, without a single tack or gybe, occasionally hauling her in on a close reach towards the quarter. The wind speed kept pretty steady, though what was worse it stayed low and, as you can probably imagine, he was as bored as a goldfish in a small bowl. Yet all of that changed as soon as Santa Águeda appeared on the horizon. He smiled like the cat that got the cream.

The island was bathed in sunlight and gleamed like a jewel, with not a cloud in sight it appeared to shine with its own interior light. In the pit of his stomach he felt a sensation like hunger, the excitement of that first contact with a new land, with another people, born by the winds and the skill of his hands, not forgetting the autopilot.

The nearer he got the more translucent and crystal clear the water appeared, revealing the seabed in all its splendour, over these last miles the fauna and flora transmitted an intense sense of life that he had never previously experienced.

He headed for the entrance to Port Raimat, which was on the south side of the island, protected from the predominant local winds and currents.

“Port Raimat, Port Raimat: Misterioso here, Misterioso, Misterioso. Are you receiving me? Out” “Go ahead Misterioso, receiving you loud and clear, welcome to Santa Águeda.”

He sailed for twelve long days, born along by a starboard wind, without a single tack or gybe, occasionally hauling her in on a close reach towards the quarter.

He smiled from ear to ear: “How charming.” he thought. He was immediately directed to a well-located mooring, alongside the main services building and close to the port gates. He stepped down onto the solid, well-kept jetty, needing a little time to regain his land-legs.

He had no idea where to go. He asked the seaman who was heling him to moor, and was taken to the port offices to register his arrival.

He looked around to see if he could spot the girl who had responded to his radio call, but the port hand got behind the counter and started to take his data. Jean asked him: “Isn’t the girl who responded to my radio call here?”

“There are no girls here sir; I register all visitors to the port.”

“But my radio call was answered by a girl…”

“Sir, it was me that answered your call… You wouldn’t be calling me a…”

“No, no, of course not! It’s just that I… No, sorry.”

How strange he thought, but the idea of eating a typically Santa Águedian cooked meal soon made him forget the incident. He tidied the boat, gave her a good scrubbing, flushed down the decks, aired her and then took a long shower. Stretching out on his cot he said to himself: “Tonight I’m going to eat a cooked meal on land”, before falling into a deep slumber.

It was probably the gentle sway of the water that woke him up, his body had not yet adapted to the stillness of the port. He looked at his watch, it was four o’clock in the morning! The night was pitch-black.

He remembered falling asleep and he cursed himself, but then he realised there was no hurry he could stay here as long as felt like and eat cooked, land-based diners as often as he wanted. Doubtless after a few days in port he would get back in touch with life on dryland.

Nevertheless, Jean was eager to explore the island, and given that at four o’clock in the morning his only options were sleeping or taking her out for a sail, he decided on the latter. He set off slowly, under power, with the idea of discovering a cove where he could have a swim and do some snorkelling.

He had no charts for the island and decided, by flipping a coin, to sail round it keeping the island on his starboard beam. After a couple of hours of peaceful sailing, behind some cliffs, he spotted what appeared to be the entrance to a cove. He sailed her in, discovering the most beautiful inlet he’d ever seen and, just then, the first rays of the morning sun came up over the horizon. What on earth was it about this island that made it look as if it was lit from within? The

Buscó con la mirada a la señorita que le había contestado por la radio, pero fue el marinero quien se colocó tras el mostrador y se dispuso a recoger sus datos. Jean le preguntó: —¿No está la señorita que me ha atendido por radio?

—Aquí no hay ninguna señorita, señor. Yo atiendo todo el puerto.

—Pero a mí me ha contestado una señorita…

—Señor, yo le contesté. A no ser que me esté llamando usted…

—No, no, por supuesto, sólo me pareció… Disculpe.

Salió extrañado, pero la ilusión de cenar un plato caliente de comida casera santaguiedina le hizo olvidar el incidente. Ordenó, limpió, baldeó, ventiló, se dio una interminable ducha y recostado en su litera se dijo: —Voy a cenar caliente a tierra.

Dicho esto, cayó profundamente dormido.

Probablemente fue la tranquilidad de las aguas lo que le despertó. Su cuerpo todavía no había asimilado la quietud. Miró su reloj de pulsera, que marcaba las cuatro de la mañana. Noche cerrada. Recordó que se había quedado dormido y se maldijo, pero enseguida se dio cuenta de que no tenía ninguna prisa. Podía estar tanto tiempo como quisiera en aquel lugar y cenar en tierra tantas veces como quisiera. Seguro que unos cuantos días de vida en tierra le devolverían el ritmo normal de tierra firme.

Pero Jean estaba ansioso de conocer la isla, y viendo que a las cuatro de la mañana no podía hacer otra cosa que dormir o navegar, se decidió a hacer lo segundo. Zarpó, lentamente y a motor, con el deseo de descubrir alguna cala en la que darse un buen baño y bucear.

No tenía cartografía de la isla y resolvió rodearla dejándola a estribor, lanzando una moneda al aire. Tras un par de horas de calmada navegación vio tras unos riscos algo que parecía un entrador hacia una cala. Se acercó y sus ojos admiraron la más bella ensenada que jamás había visto. Coincidía con la caricia 34

de los primeros rayos de sol. ¿Qué tenía esa isla que parecía iluminarse desde dentro? Las aguas transparentes dejaban ver un fondo sin peligros.

Se acercó hasta que la sonda le marcó dos metros y fondeó el ancla. Se encontraba terminando la maniobra y asegurándose de que quedaba bien firme, cuando la visión de la silueta de una persona le sobresaltó.

Una joven muchacha, con un minúsculo biquini entraba paseando plácidamente hacia la mar. Jean sintió que ya había valido la pena su decisión. El sol brillaba reflejándose en el dorado biquini de la joven, y un escalofrío recorrió todo el cuerpo del marino. Tenía que hablar con ella. Regresó a la bañera para prepararse a ir a su encuentro. Se descalzó y bajó un instante a la cabina para mirarse en un espejo.

Rejuveneció quince años de golpe. La pareció su aspecto aceptable, iba limpio, afeitado y bien bronceado, y salió para ir a su encuentro. Al buscarla de nuevo se angustió. Había perdido de vista a la muchacha. Blasfemó algo en voz baja. Su ilusión se desvanecía, cuando una bonita voz se dirigió a él.

—¡Hola!— le saludó un bellísimo rostro con los codos apoyados en la plataforma de baño del Misterioso.

—Estaba esperando conocerte, últimamente no viene mucha gente por aquí, ¿cómo te llamas?

—Jean, soy Jean, pero ¿qué significa que estabas esperando conocerme?

—Sí, yo te contesté por la radio, en Port Raimat ¿recuerdas?

Soy Zandra.

—Pero el marinero me dijo que fue él, que él solo atiende el puerto.

—Vaya, otra vez Maurice. No le hagas mucho caso, se siente indispensable. Es mi hermano —dijo ella mientas subía a bordo.

Jean y Zandra conectaron bien desde el principio. Estuvieron charlando durante horas, sobre Santa Águeda, su clima, su puerto deportivo, las regatas que se organizaban antaño, sobre la belleza de la isla, y también sobre la soledad.

Jean le explicaba su aventura y algunos de los secretos de la navegación a vela. Zandra parecía estar impresionada y muy interesada en todo lo que le contaba.

Al atardecer, estaban cómodamente sentados en el triángulo de proa del Misterioso. El borneo les hizo mirar hacia poniente.

Sus cuerpos se rozaron y, por primera vez en muchas horas, se quedaron callados. Se miraron fijamente a los ojos y luego a los labios. Lentamente se aproximaron. Se fundieron en un beso tan profundo que Jean perdió la noción del tiempo. Cuando abrió los ojos de nuevo, el sol ya había desparecido en el horizonte. Estaban abrazados, sudando y palpitando de pasión. Hicieron el amor en la cubierta del Misterioso como adolescentes.

transparent waters revealed a seabed free of hazards as he drew her in towards the shore and, when the lead marked two metres, he set anchor. As he was tying her off and making sure everything was ship-shape, out of the corner of his eye he was startled to spot the silhouette of a person. It was young girl wearing a skimpy bikini. She was strolling leisurely towards the sea. Jean felt that fate had led him to come to this place. The sun shone brightly, reflecting off the goldcolour of the girl’s bikini, and a shiver ran through him. He had to speak to her. He jumped down into the cockpit to prepare himself, took his shoes off and ducked down into the cabin to check himself out in the mirror. He had to admit he was looking good, 15 years younger at least: clean, well-shaven and with a healthy tan. He scrambled back up on deck and looked around. His heart sank; she was nowhere to be seen, the girl was gone. He swore under his breath. But suddenly, out of nowhere, a beautiful voice piped up, saying: “Hi”, her beautiful face looking up, her elbows resting on the platform of the Misterioso’s cockpit. “I was hoping to meet you, recently we haven’t had many visitors round here. What’s your name?”

“Jean, I’m J-Jean.” He stuttered, caught off guard: “But what do you mean you were hoping to meet me?”

“Yes, it was me that responded to your radio message at Port Raimat.

Do you remember? Nice to meet you, I’m Zandra.”

“But the man at the port said that he was the only one who worked there.”

“Well that’s Maurice for you! Don’t pay any attention to him, he likes to feel indispensable. He’s my brother” she said, climbing aboard.

Jean and Zandra hit it off straight away; they started chatting and ended up sitting there for hours. They talked about Santa Águeda, the climate, the marina, the regattas that they used to organised, how beautiful the island was, and also about loneliness.

Jean told her all about his adventure, the complexities of sailing single-handed in a small yacht, and Zandra appeared to be deeply impressed and fascinated by everything he had to say.

As evening fell they were still sitting there on the Misterioso’s bows, the tide having swung her round so that they were facing west. His hand brushed her shoulder and a jolt of electricity surged through them. For the first time in many hours, there was silence between them, their eyes briefly met, and then leaning into each other their mouths came together into a deep and passionate kiss, a kiss that was so long and deep that Jean lost all notion of time. By the time they finally came up for air the sun had dropped behind the horizon, their arms were wrapped around each other, they were sweating, breathing in each other’s perfume and the tingling of their passion was on the point of exploding. They made love right there, sprawled across the Misterioso’s deck, with the wild abandon and release of repressed teenagers.

¿Qué tenía esa isla que parecía iluminarse desde dentro? Las aguas transparentes dejaban ver un fondo sin peligros. Se acercó hasta que la sonda le marcó dos metros y fondeó el ancla.

What on earth was it about this island that made it look as if it was lit from within? The transparent waters revealed a seabed free of hazards as he drew her in towards the shore and, when the lead marked two metres, he set anchor.

“Come sailing with me.” Jean said.

“I thought you’d never ask,” she replied, “take me to the ends of the earth, my captain.”

They lay there, gazing tenderly, knowingly into each other’s eyes, and then Jean started to chuckle to himself, thinking: “Now that we’ve screwed, she’s joining the crew.”

He burst out laughing, so contagiously that Zandra couldn’t help but join in, thinking: “Now that we’ve screwed, I’m joining the crew.”

As Zandra had come to the cove on her bike, they agreed to meet up before dawn back at Port Raimat. She’d pack some things and stock up on provisions, while he’d get the boat ready to cast off.

When Jean arrived back at the Port he found Maurice, looking seriously miffed, waiting for him on the jetty. He recriminated his absence: “I thought you’d pissed off without paying your mooring fees!”

For a moment Jean was tempted to be as amiable as possible, praising the island, saying how much he liked Maurice’s sister, but her brother’s aggressive attitude did not inspire such a reaction.

“I’ll be leaving tomorrow, why don’t you just prepare my bill please?”

“Okay, these days nobody stays for very long.” murmured Maurice.

As agreed, before sunrise Zandra appeared, they stowed the provisions on board and set sailed just as the sun was appearing over the horizon. Jean noted that the waters of in Port were as clean and transparent as in the coves and the open sea. He suspected that comings and goings from the port must be pretty infrequent, though he didn’t mention this to Zandra.

He left the decision on what course they should take to Zandra, who proved herself to be a far more experienced sailor than Jean had anticipated. They headed northwest, setting a course of 318º, in search of another idyllic island, which Zandra claimed didn’t appear on any of the charts, leaving in their wake the beautiful island of Santa Águeda, seeming as if lit from within.

A fresh 18-knot breeze was blowing off the port quarter and they set the spinnaker without difficulties, how much easier everything was with two sets of hands. While the automatic pilot plotted their route Jean and Zandra consummated their new fund love, stretched out in the Misterioso’s cockpit, as she ploughed the seas at a vigorous 9 knots. But suddenly, the wind started to get up and the automatic pilot began to have difficulties keeping them on course. Zandra let up and took the rudder, and at that very moment there was a violent change in the direction of the wind, bring her head round, keeling

—Ven conmigo a navegar— le dijo Jean.

—Creía que no me lo ibas a pedir. Llévame contigo, mi capitán —respondió.

Ambos se miraron profundamente a los ojos con ternura y complicidad. Jean comenzó a reír y pensó: —Se ha enrollado conmigo y se ha enrolado conmigo.

Terminó estallando en simpáticas carcajadas que contagiaron a Zandra, que en ese momento estaba pensando: —Me he enrollado con él y me he enrolado con él.

Zandra había llegado a la cala en su bicicleta. Convinieron en verse de nuevo en Port Raimat antes del amanecer. Ella prepararía su equipaje y compraría algunos víveres más, y él se ocuparía de preparar el barco para nuevas singladuras.

Por un momento tuvo la tentación de ser agradable, de halagar su isla, de contarle que adoraba a su hermana, pero la actitud de Maurice no le inspiró amabilidad.

—Mañana me marcho, prepáreme la factura, por favor.

—Sí, últimamente nadie se queda —murmuró Maurice.

Antes del orto del sol, como estaba previsto, Zandra apareció.

Terminaron de estibar todo y zarparon con los primeros rayos del sol. Jean pareció que las aguas del puerto estaban tan limpias y transparentes como las calas a mar abierto. No le preguntó nada a Zandra, pero sospechó que ya no tenía gran actividad.

Fue ella la que decidió el rumbo a tomar. Estaba más avezada en las labores náuticas de lo que Jean había pensado. Se dirigían casi al noroeste, rumbo 318º, hacia otra isla paradisíaca que según Zandra no figuraba en las cartas. Dejaban atrás Santa Águeda, preciosa, parecía iluminada desde dentro.

El viento soplaba por la aleta de babor, a dieciocho nudos.

Izaron el spinnaker sin dificultades. Qué sencillas resultaban las maniobras con más manos trabajando. Mientras el piloto automático gobernaba con finura, Jean y Zandra se amaban abrazados en la bañera del Misterioso, surcando las aguas a nueve nudos, hasta que el viento arreció y el piloto automático empezó a tener problemas para mantener el rumbo. Zandra tomó la caña. Una violenta rolada hacia el norte les hizo irse de orzada, escorando al Misterioso hasta meter el palo en el agua. El spí completamente sumergido no les permitía adrizar el barco y las 36

olas batían con fuerza contra el pantoque.

Jean sacó su navaja y cortó con resolución la driza y la braza. A continuación intentó recuperar la vela tirando con enormes esfuerzos de la escota que la mantenía unida a la embarcación, mientras oía gritar a Zandra sin entender sus palabras. Optó por cortar también la escota a la vista de que era imposible y empezaba a desfallecer. El barco se adrizó. La mayor gualdrapeaba violentamente y tomaron dos rizos. Pensar en izar una vela de proa era una temeridad.

El viento había arreciado hasta los cuarenta y cinco nudos, y las cosas se estaban poniendo feas.

Jean se sorprendió de la entereza y experiencia que mostraba su compañera. Pasado el largo momento de angustias trataron de situarse y recuperar su rumbo. Jean consultó los instrumentos de a bordo y parecían haber enloquecido. Comprendió que la electrónica había sido dañada en el incidente, pero no entendía cómo el compás magnético de la bitácora giraba erráticamente con cada golpe de mar. La angustia se apoderó de ellos.

Pasaron la noche agazapados, con la esperanza de que amainara el temporal y de que la luz del día les hiciera ver las cosas con más ánimo. Recordó Jean que tenía un sextante a bordo, pero se veía incapaz de realizar los cálculos necesarios para situarse.

Estuvieron dos días más perdidos. Intentaban mantener un rumbo aproximado orientándose a ojo por el sol. Ni un solo barco se cruzó en la derrota. La radio muda, no sabían si no funcionaba o simplemente nadie les escuchaba.

En el crepúsculo matutino del tercer día sucedió lo que tantas horas estaban esperando. Avistaron tierra por proa.

El viento amainaba a medida que el Misterioso se aproximaba a tierra. Estaban extenuados. No tenían ninguna duda de que se trataba de la isla que Zandra había escogido. Sin embargo, cuanto más se aproximaban, más familiar les resultaba la silueta de la costa. Jean se dirigió a su compañera: —¿No se parece a Santa Águeda?

Zandra no contestó. Una lágrima se deslizaba por su mejilla.

Lo miró tiernamente a los ojos y le dijo: —Es imposible salir de Santa Águeda.

Se lanzó al agua y desapareció.

Jean estuvo buscándola durante semanas. También Maurice había desaparecido. Intentó olvidar lo sucedido y salir de la isla, pero siempre regresaba al mismo lugar. Se quedó en Port Raimat, cuando un día la radio habló: —Port Raimat, Port Raimat, Port Raimat, aquí Trotamundos, Trotamundos, Trotamundos, ¿están a la escucha? Cambio.

her over and dipping her mast into the water. With the spinnaker completely submerged it was impossible to right her and the waves started to break against her hull. Jean whipped out his knife, cutting free the halyard and the brace and hauling as hard as he could on the sheet, trying to pull the sail back on board. At the same time he heard Zandra shrieking incomprehensibly. Given the impossibility of pulling the sail in he decided to cut the sheet. The boat righted herself, the mainsail flapping violently and they had to take it in a couple of reefs. The very idea of setting a foresail was madness. By this time the wind was gusting at 45 knots and the situation had taken a drastic turn for the worse. Jean was amazed by the composure and experience shown by his shipmate. Once the worst had blown over they tried to calm down and recover their course. Jean consulted the on board instruments, but they all appeared to have gone crazy. He figured that the electronics must have been damaged during the incident, though he couldn’t understand what could possibly make binnacle’s magnetic compass swing about so erratically with every wave that hit. They were absolutely terrified.

They spent the night huddled down in the cockpit, praying that the storm would blow itself out and that daylight would bring new hope.

Jean remembered he had a sextant on board, but felt absolutely incapable of making the necessary calculations to identify their location.

For two days they were completely lost, by eye and using the sun and stars for guidance they tried to maintain a steady course. They did not see a single boat. The radio was down, though they didn’t know if it had stopped transmitting or simply nobody was listening.

As day broke on the third morning, their prayers were finally met, spying land on the port side.

The closer they got to land the more the wind dropped. They were exhausted but certain that this must be the island that Zandra had chosen. Yet the closer they got, the more familiar the outline appeared.

Jean turned to his companion and said: “Doesn’t it look a lot like Santa Águeda?”

At first Zandra didn’t answer. A tear trickled down her cheek.

Then she looked him tenderly in the eye and said: “It’s impossible to escape from Santa Águeda.”

She threw herself in the water and disappeared from sight.

Jean spent weeks searching for her. When he got back to port Maurice had also disappeared. He tried to forget about what had happened and to leave the island, but the wins always brought him back to Port Raimat. Then one day the radio crackled into action: “Port Raimat, Port Raimat, Port Raimat, Trotamundos here, Trotamundos, Trotamundos. Can you hear me? Out.

Entre otros, ofrece su Menú Gastronómico, que propone elegir entre tres primeros platos: Salmón marinado al perfume de eneldo, Mousse de escalibada con salsa de roquefort o Mejillones a la marinera; y dos segundos platos: Paella marinera o Tronco de merluza a la donostiarra, además de postre. Salmón fresco con eneldo que lo perfuma y el proceso del marinado previo. La mousse combina todos los sabores que confieren las verduras contrastados con el de la salsa roquefort. Y los mejillones a la marinera, clásico, pero con el secreto que encierra la salsa de la casa y, en temporada, los mejillones de roca. La paella marinera, un buen fumet de pescado y un sofrito tradicional de la cocina mediterránea, junto con la gamba, sepia, cigalas, etc... Una sinfonía para el paladar. El tronco de merluza a la donostiarra, cocinado al horno, escaldado con una emulsión de aceite, que ha sofrito los ajos previamente y un toque de vinagre que lo perfuma. Todo un clásico.

A cuisine based on over three decades of experience. Their select raw materials are impeccable, while preparation is excellent, based on a respect for essential tastes and traditional formulas. The menu, like their wine list, is rich and varied, covering a wide range of tastes.

Of the different set menus the Gastronomic Menu is of particular interest, offering three possible first courses: marinated salmon, served raw and fresh, perfumed with dill; a mousse of escalibada -grilled vegetable- and Roquefort sauce, combining the strong taste of cheese with the aromatic

flavours of the vegetables; and their classical Seaman’s Style mussels, which during the season is based on rock mussels. The mediterranean paella, on his own fish broth an in-house stir-fry, a symphony for your palate. Then a thick Donostia-style hake fillet, oven baked, blanched with an emulsion of oil, which has stir-fry the garlic previously and a touch of vinegar that perfumes it. A real classic.

La propuesta de su menú empieza por unos surtidos de conchas, tallarinas, mejillones y berberechos… Y luego el arroz caldoso con bogavante, un plato realizado con tiempo y cariño. Hay un toque final que solo conocen el cocinero y Santos, patrón de esta marisquería. No olvidar el arroz negro, auténtico, ciego, con su tinta y el “secreto santos”. Los pescados no se acaban, pero también tiene carnes como la DO Aliste (Zamora), excepcional.

The Marisqueria Santos, seafood restaurant, offers an impressive display, selecting the best raw materials that the sea can provide and presenting a cuisine that is unpretentious, sober and exquisite. They have a set price menu that includes, as the first course a shellfish selection that includes clams, mussels and cockles… Followed by “caldosa con bogavante” (a rice casserole with lobster), prepared slowly, lovingly and with a final touch known only to the head chef and Santos himself, the patron of this seafood restaurant. And don’t forget their authentic black rice, cooked in squid ink and with the “Santos secret”. There are endless fish dishes and also exceptional meats, with denomination of origin Aliste (Zamora). Specialising in Albariño wines the list also includes a fine range of reds and whites, including Vega Sicilia. Not forgetting the very best Iberian salt-cured ham “5 Jotas” produced by Sánchez Romero Carvajal.

No solo pizza

L

Milanesa es una propuesta nueva en el puerto. Además de sus clásicas y especiales pizzas, la carta está repleta de exquisiteces italianas con el toque personal de Marco, que regenta estos fogones… y el horno de leña.

Una idea de menú para dos personas puede contener delicias como la parmigiana de berenjenas (melanzane alla parmigiana), al estilo clásico o de verano; la célebre burrata fritta “STB”; y como pasta los linguine alle vongole.

Para terminar, el tiramisú tradicional o de fruta. Cada comensal quedará satisfecho por 25 euros.

La parmegiana de berenjenas es un plato del sur de Italia, cuyos ingredientes básicos son la berenjena, el queso parmesano, la mozzarella y la salsa de tomate, además del toque de albahaca que se cocina al horno, en el caso de La Milanesa, de leña.

La burrata fritta es la esferificación de la pizza, una bola a modo de saquito atada por arriba con tiras de masa de pizza, una fórmula ganadora de más un premio gastronómico, que Marco prepara con jamón serrano y parmesano.

Y los linguine alle vongole, típicos de la región de Nápoles, plato de pasta tradicional con almejas, extendido por toda Italia. Y como colofón el tiramisú, que aquí también lo preparan con fruta.

La Milanesa is a new option at the Port, and apart from their classical and very special pizzas, the menu also offers a wide range of Italian delicacies, all with the personal touch of Marco, the man who conjures magic from the kitchen and the wood-fired pizza oven.

A possible menu could start off with a melanzane (aubergine) alla parmigiana, either classical or summer style; their rightly celebrated burrata fritta “STB” (a kind of spherical pizza) and, for the pasta linguine alle vongole (with clams). And to finish off a tiramisu, either traditional or with fruit. All of which works out at around €25 per head.

The melanzane alla parmegiana is a dish from the south of Italy, the basic ingredients of which, apart from the aubergines, are parmesan cheese, Mozzarella and tomato sauce, with a touch of basil, oven baked, in the case of La Milanesa, in a wood-fired oven.

The burrata fritta is like a spherical pizza, a sack in the shape of a ball, tied at the top with strips of pizza dough, a winning formula with more than one gastronomic prize under its belt, which Marco prepares with Serrano cured ham and Parmesan cheese. The linguine alle vongole, which originally came from the region of Naples, is a traditional pasta dish with clams that you can now find all over Italy. And finally a tiramisú, which here they also make with fruit.

ropuesta diferente, cien por cien vegana, abierta, variada, multicolor, con productos ecológicos y de proximidad. Ester Duplaa desde hace tres años gestiona este espacio no solo gastronómico, sino también cultural, donde se celebran conciertos, debates, teatro, y demás actividades.

Mucha variación, calidad y difusión del veganismo, una alternativa a la cocina tradicional. No hace menús y hay que remitirse a la carta, pero se puede satisfacer el apetito por unos 15 euros. Entre los primeros, un plato best seller, el paté de xoriço d’enganyifa (falso chorizo), hecho con tomates secos y almendras; o un humus en versión personal, con especies, aceite ajo, etc.; y de segundo un fricandó de seitán, una masa a base de proteína vegetal, de trigo; o una lasaña con pipas de calabaza, de girasol, cebolla, patata, arroz integral, hierbas mediterráneas, tomate, la pasta y la bechamel elaborada con leche vegetal. Para postre los pasteles sin harina, con copos de cebada, ligeros, con frutas, coco o lo que la imaginación le inspire; postre músico con su moscatel.

Otra propuesta es un plato combinado saludable: el Healthy. Incluye ensalada, humus con nachos, la hamburguesa de la casa y algo de fruta, apto para celíacos y de alimentación completa, que sale por 10 euros.

How about something different, 100% vegan, open, varied, multicolour, based on ecological and proximity products. For the last 3 years Ester Duplá has been running this establishment, which is not only gastronomical but also cultural, hosting concerts, debates, theatre and a wide range of other activities.

Plenty of variation, quality and the promotion of veganism, an alternative to our traditional cuisine. There are no set price menus, you have to choose a la carte, but you can still eat your fill for as little as €15 a head. The first courses include a best seller dish, the xoriço d’enganyifa (false spicy sausage), which is made from sun-dried tomatoes and almonds; as well as a very personal version of humus, with spices, garlic oil, etc. The main courses include seitan stew, based on wheat vegetable protein; or a lasagne with pumpkin and sunflower seeds, onion, potato and brown rice, Mediterranean herbs and tomato, plus pasta and béchamel, made from vegetable milk. Desserts include cakes made, not with flour but using light barley flakes, topped with fruit, coconut or whatever else her imagination has come up with; nuts and raisins and sweet muscatel wine.

Very much recommended is a healthy combined dish, which curiously enough goes by the name Healthy, and includes salad, humus with nachos, the house-style veggie-burger and fruit. A meal on a plate, also suitable for coeliacs, for just €10.

Además, los mejores bocadillos de la comarca

ergio Roca dirige este bar restaurante desde hace tres años. Un local que, además de contar con unos fogones de calidad, destaca por ofrecer los mejores bocadillos del puerto, entre otras razones por la exquisita calidad del pan rústico que elaboran ellos mismos. La variedad de combinaciones es interminable.

En la cocina cuenta con especialidades interesantes como el tartar de atún o el gazpacho, muy apreciados por la clientela habitual en la temporada de verano. Dos platos estrella de la casa son el atún a la brasa o en teriyaki —técnica de cocción japonesa en que los alimentos, al horno o a la parrilla, brasa, se asan en un adobo de salsa dulce—, plato que domina como pocos, y el bacalao con muselina de ajo, una delicia que evidencia el dominio del recetario del mar. Las carnes también tienes su protagonismo en la larga carta de la Taberna: chuletón, costillas, filete… a la brasa, auténticas.

La fideuá, con un toque especial de la casa, también tiene fama.

Y como colofón un postre casero: el delicioso y suave pastel de queso. De la Taberna se sale bien comido por unos 25 euros. En la carta de vinos la lista cubre todas las necesidades y presupuestos.

Sergio Roca has been running this bar/restaurant for the last 3 years. It’s a place that, as well as making great meals also serves the Port’s best sandwiches, among other reasons because of the exquisite quality of the country-style bread, which they make themselves. They offer endless combinations.

From the kitchen they also offer have a number of interesting specialities, such as tuna tartar or gazpacho, much appreciated by their regulars during the summer season. Two of their top dishes are charcoal grilled or teriyaki tuna -based on the Japanese culinary technique in which the food, whether in the oven or on the charcoal grill, is prepared by marinating in a sweet sauce, a dish that few can do better. They also prepare a fine bacalao con muselina de ajo (cod with garlic gratinée), a delight that amply demonstrates their mastery of seafood recipes. The extensive menu also features a number of authentic, charcoal-grilled meat dishes: T-bone steak, chops, tenderloin….

Another dish they are famous for is their fideuá, with a special touch that makes it unlike any other.

And to finish off, a homemade dessert: their own smooth and delicious cheesecake. At La Taberna you can eat your fill for around €25 a head, and they have a wine list to suit all tastes and pockets.

n primavera de 2019 Lola Segura abrió esta tapería diferente, exquisita y con interesantes e inteligentes propuestas. Ha elevado la humilde tapa a la categoría gastronómica. Carta se basa en tres tipos de tapas, distintas a las que nos encontraríamos en cualquier bar. En lo más alto, las tapas de cazuelita, platillos elaborados con productos frescos, como el morro de bacalao con salsa de setas, la ternera con salsa de tomate, las albóndigas con sepia, champiñones a la cerveza con yema de huevo cruda que se reconvierte en una especie de revoltillo, o las almejas con espárragos trigueros…

Lola apuesta por el vermut tradicional con ofertas de lata selecta en conserva, calamar en su tinta, espárragos, mejillón en escabeche, sardinita en aceite, xouba ya guisada…

Y tapas frías como la tabla de quesos con un queso preparado por la casa en aceite, o el jamón ibérico. O pinchitos como el tex-mex, dorito con guacamole, salsa chili picante, sardinita en aceite y jalapeño. O el montadito del mejillón en escabeche con confitura de manzana.

Para probar, el tex-mex y el quesito en aceite, zamburiñas, morro de bacalao… o las patatas bravas con alioli de ajo negro o salsa de tomate...

El pan… gallego, empanada de harina de castaña y lampeira (bizcocho) y buenos vinos. Se sale bien comido por 15 a 20 euros. Y carta selecta de postres con tarta Oreo o tocinillo de cielo, entre otros.

In spring 2019 Lola Segura opened this tapas bar with a difference, exquisite and offering interesting and intelligent proposals, raising the humble tapa to the category of gastronomic delight. A menu based on 3 kinds of tapas, which are unlike the tapas you might find in any other bar. Best of all are their casserole based tapas, small dishes elaborated with fresh ingredients, salt cod in wild mushroom sauce, beef with tomato sauce, meat balls with squid, mushrooms in a beer sauce scrambled with raw egg yolks, or clams and wild asparagus…

Lola also offers a traditional “vermut” (vermouth) with a select offer of top-line canned foods, including squid in its own ink, asparagus, pickled mussels, small sardines in oil, readycooked xouba sardines…

There is also a selection of cold tapas, including a cheeseboard featuring their own oil-soaked cheeses, as well as salt-cured Iberian ham; a variety of kebabs, such as Tex-Mex, chips with guacamole, hot chili sauce, small sardines in oil and jalapeno; as well as pickled mussel montaditos with apple preserve.

You just have to try the Tex-Mex and the cheese in oil, zamburiña scallops, salt cod … Or the spicy patatas bravas with black-garlic alioli or tomato sauce...

The Galician style bread, chestnut flour pastries and lampeira (tart) accompanied by a fine selection of wines. You can eat your fill for €15 to €20 a head. There is also a selection of desserts that includes Oreo cake or tocinillo de cielo (egg yolk and caramel cream), among others.

hora hay un rincón de Nápoles en Port Ginesta.

En un ambiente familiar encontramos la pizzeríarestaurante Tre Forni, donde Inty y Vicenzo elaboran unas extraordinarias pizzas napolitanas. La masa se hace a diario y se deja reposar antes de hornearlas en horno de leña.

Gian Luca es el responsable de elaborar, también a diario, la pasta fresca.

La carta de esta pizzeria no es extensa, olvídense de estar media hora repasando tres páginas con pizzas diferentes.

Ofrecen las básicas de la zona de Nápoles porque hay una cultura de la pizza que hay que respetar. De hecho, no está de más saber que existe una denominación Pizza Napoletana Verace Artigianale. Es decir, ni tienen ni tendrán una pizza carbonara. El único espacio donde podremos encontrar algo de creación por parte del pizzaiolo es en la pizza del día, en la que se echa mano de la imaginación y de más ingredientes.

Además de la carta, Tre Forni ofrece un menú infantil y menú de mediodía que incluye la pizza casera y entrantes (ensaladas, mejillones, provolone).

Un lugar agradable que se complementa con un espacio lúdico como es el Barco Pirata, para jugar con láser, y la heladería italiana, del mismo grupo.

Now there is a corner of Naples in Port Ginesta. In a family atmosphere we find the pizzeria-restaurant Tre Forni, where Inty and Vicenzo prepare extraordinary Napolitan pizzas. The dough is made daily and allowed to rest before baking them in a wood oven.

The menu of this pizzeria is not extensive, forget about being half an hour reviewing three pages with different pizzas. They offer the basics of the Naples area because there is a culture of pizza that you have to respect. In fact, it is worth knowing that there is an appellation Pizza Napoletana Verace Artigianale. That is, neither have nor will have a carbonara pizza. The only space where we can find something of creation by the pizzaiolo is in the pizza of the day, where he can use imagination and more ingredients.

Telma Cester

Telma Cester García (2005, Barcelona) ya era, con 12 años, campeona del mundo sub19 en 2016, campeona de Europa sub-19 en 2017, 4ª del mundo Open Absoluto y subcampeona de Europa Absoluto en la especialidad de cable-wakeskate. A sus 14 va en camino de convertirse en una atleta de alto nivel.

In 2016, when she was just 12 years old, Telma Cester García (2005, Barcelona) was already world under-19 champion. In 2017 she became European under-19 champion and took 4th place in the Absolute World Open Women’s Championship and in the Europe Absolute she was runner-up in the cable-wakeskating speciality. Now, at just 14 years old, she is well on the way to becoming an athlete of the highest level.

The Young Cable-Wakeskating Promise

E

n qué consiste esta especialidad? Es un deporte acuático en el cual el ‘rider’ se desliza sobre el agua encima de una tabla, arrastrado por un cabo con un asa que recibe el nombre de palonier tirado por un cable o una lancha. Un deporte poco conocido y muy técnico, que exige una gran preparación física y mental y en el que Telma va camino de hacer historia.

Los retos son elevados y el calendario no deja tregua. “En competición Telma tiene varios retos nacionales, como el OCP Anniversary, BCN Imagine Extreme o los Nacionales. A nivel internacional tiene el Plastic Playgrounds en Londres, los Europeos en Milán y los Mundiales en Argentina”, detalla Iñaki Anitua, su entrenador.

Empezaste desde muy pequeña… ¿Qué te atrajo a este deporte?

Que suele ser un deporte de verano, sol, agua, buen clima…, aunque ahora la temperatura del agua ya no importa tanto ya que entro también en invierno. De todas maneras, con un buen traje de neopreno no se nota tanto. ¿Cuáles son tus objetivos deportivos para los próximos años?

La verdad es que no me marco objetivos. Bueno sí, miento, jeje… el principal objetivo es pasármelo bien y el resto va llegando solo. Mis compañeros de selección, mi entrenador Iñaki Anitua y los viajes juntos hacen que todo sea posible.

Compaginas el wakeskate con el baloncesto en el BFViladecans y la escuela del Barça. ¿Cómo conjugas ambos deportes?

Hay momentos que se hace complicado, por ejemplo cuando llega el final de temporada de basket y el inicio del wakeskate.

Justo ahora, este mes de junio, es el más duro y además se suman los exámenes de final de curso.De vez en cuando tengo que tirar de mi preparador físico, Iván Lorente, que es el que me ayuda a tener mi cuerpo en forma.

Entrenar, competir...Y también el ocio y los amigos ¿Cómo es tu semana?

Los estudios ocupan el primer lugar en importancia, luego planteo entrenos después del colegio y cuando tengo algún hueco lo dedico 49

So, what does this speciality consist of? It’s a water sport in which the rider skims across the surface of the water on a board, pulled by a boat or by a cable, or “palonier”. It’s not a very well-known sport but it’s one that requires a great deal of skill and the highest levels of physical fitness and mental preparation. It is a sport in which Telma is set to make history.

The demands are high and the calendar can be punishing: “In terms of competition Telma has a number of national challenges, such as the Anniversary OCP, BCN Imagine Extreme or the National Championship, while internationally she will be competing at Plastic Playgrounds, in London; The European Championship in Milan and the World Championship in Argentina”, explains her coach, Iñaki Anitua.

You started out when you were very young… What drew you to this sport?

It’s usually a summer sport, sun, water, good weather… although now the temperature of the water doesn’t matter so much -I train in winter too- and if you have a good neoprene suit you don’t notice it so much.

What are your sporting goals for the coming years?

The truth is I don’t really have goals… Okay, I do, I’m lying, hahaha.

The main one is to have a good time, and the rest just follows on. My colleagues in the national team, my coach Iñaki Anitua and travelling together make everything possible.

You combine wakeskating and basketball with BF Viladecans and the Barça Academy. How do you manage to combine the two sports?

Sometimes it gets a bit complicated, for example the end of the basketball season coincides with the start of the wakeskating season.

Right now, in June, it’s tough, and also we have our end of year exams at school, so…

Every now and then I have to resort to my fitness trainer, who helps to keep me in good shape.

Training, competing... As well as having fun with your friends. What’s your week like?

Well, first and foremost, there’s school, and after school maybe some training, and then if I’ve got any free time I spend it with my friends, though I get to spend a lot of time with them anyway, mostly we share

a mis amigas, con las que paso mucho tiempo ya que en la mayoría de los casos compartimos aficiones, basket o Wakeskate. ¿Cómo organizas la rutina de los entrenos y las competiciones con el colegio?

Mi escuela, el liceo francés de Gavà, me ayuda a organizarme cuando la temporada aprieta. Normalmente, antes de cada viaje, nos reunimos y preparamos exámenes y deberes para que mientras estoy en competición pueda estar concentrada. A la vuelta me toca ponerme al día. Siempre me ayudan a que todo sea algo más sencillo. ¿Te ves en el futuro tan vinculada a este deporte como ahora?

Me gustaría, y poder enseñar a los niños parte de mis conocimientos. Cada vez me doy más cuenta lo importante que es el deporte en la vida. Aunque quizá sea algo que mis padres me han inculcado, creo que te ayuda a crecer como persona.

El wakeskate no es una especialidad muy conocida que muchos confunden con el wakeboard ¿Cuáles son las diferencias?

La principal diferencia es ir o no sujeto a una tabla. Mientras que en el wakeboard vas con botas como si fuera snowboard, en el wakeskate vas libre, unas bambas y listo, como si fuera skateboard.

Con el wakeskate todo es mucho más técnico, no hay opción de cometer errores, aunque el wakeboard es más espectacular para el espectador.

Skateboard, surf, kitesurf… ¿Qué otras especialidades acuáticas practicas?

He practicado las tres, sobre todo el skateboard. Pero claro el tiempo que tengo es muy limitado para otros hobbies.

Iñaki Anitua, su entrenador, destaca las cualidades de Telma. “La principal es su carácter. Le pone determinación a cada maniobra y su carisma hace que parezcan diferentes a las de los demás. Su agilidad y potencia le dan un toque definitivo”.

“A corto plazo —dice— tiene que seguir haciendo lo que le gusta, eso le llevará a sacar maniobras nuevas y mantener esa actitud en competición. El resto de su formación se lo dará la experiencia, porque a su edad está viviendo un nivel altísimo que en pocos años la convertirán en una atleta de máximo nivel”.

En los objetivos y las prioridades en la formación deportiva y personal de Telma, sus padres coinciden plenamente con Iñaki.

“Damos prioridad a sus estudios, sin dejar de lado el deporte. Esta combinación es una buena pócima para el crecimiento global de cualquier niño. Es un deporte extremo y requiere más control quizá que otros. Además, no olvidemos que a esta edad aún están en crecimiento”.

Para ellos, el entorno de Castelldefels y Port Ginesta es ideal. “Vivimos en Castelldefels y el lugar habitual de entreno es el Olimpic Cable Park en el Canal Olímpic, pero hemos elegido estar

How do you organise your training and competition routine with having to go to school?

I go to the French School in Gavà, and they help me out with the training when I need it most. Normally, before each trip, we get together and prepare the exams and my homework, so that when I’m competing I can concentrate on that. Then when I get back I have to catch up. But they really help to make everything just a little bit easier.

Iñaki Anitua, Telma’s coach, underlines both her sporting and personal qualities: “The main thing is her character. Every move she makes is with determination, while her charisma makes her moves seem different from those of the others.

And then her agility and power give it that definitive touch”.

Yet he also clearly believes that, “In the short term she has to keep on having fun doing what she likes, that’s what will let her to come up with new movements and keep up this attitude in competition. The rest of her training is the result of experience, because for her age she’s maintaining a level of athleticism that in a few years will turn her into a top level athlete”.

With regard to Telma’s goals, and her sporting and personal priorities, her parents are in absolute agreement with Iñaki. “For us the priority is her school work, without leaving aside the sport. This combination is a good brew for the all-round growth of any kid. We also think rest is important, taking a break, and diet. It’s an extreme sport and

maybe requires more control than other sports. And let’s not forget, at this age she’s still growing”.

For Telma’s parents the environment in Castelldefels and Port Ginesta is ideal. “We live in Castelldefels, and training normally takes place at the Olympic Cable Park, which is on the Olympic Canal, but we’ve chosen to maintain a link with Port Ginesta, to reinforce other aspects of her training using a jet ski.

But for the family the environment of Port Ginesta is more than just the sport: “You just have to see the state of their installations,” they explain, “the area set aside for surfers with its active webcam, the mini-beach or the restaurants…

We’re delighted to be part of Port Ginesta, it’s a place we knew before Telma was born and we’ve seen how it has grown and got better.

A place that is 100% recommendable for a visit, whether on foot or bicycle!”

In the future do you see yourself as closely linked with the sport as you are now?

I’d like to be, and I could teach kids everything I’ve learnt.

More and more I realise how important in life sport is, although maybe that’s something my parents have taught me.

I think it helps you grow as a person.

What do you think the future holds for you, professionally?

I still don’t know! Sport maybe, travelling...

Wakeskating isn’t a very well-known speciality; many people confuse it with wakeboarding. What are the differences?

The main difference is that you’re not fixed to the board in any way. For wakeboarding you wear boots, like in snowboarding, while for wakeskating your free, just a pair of pumps and off you go, it’s like skateboarding. In wakeskating you need a lot more skill, you just can’t make mistakes, having said that wakeboarding is more spectacular for spectators.

Skateboarding, surfing, kitesurfing… What other aquatic specialities do you take part in?

I’ve done all three, particularly skateboarding. Mind you I don’t have a lot of time for other hobbies.

Who are your references in terms of sport, and why?

Lio Sofer and Zuzana Vrablova, in the wold of wakeboarding/ wakeskating, and I’m also a big fan of Garbiñe Muguruza and Rafa Nadal, and obviously, when it comes to football, Leo Messi.

¿Quiénes son tus referentes deportivos?

Lio Sofer y Zuzana Vrablova en wakeboard/wakeskate y en general Garbiñe Muguruza, Rafa Nadal, y en el fútbol Leo Messi. ¿Cuáles son las habilidades que destacarías en la práctica de esta especialidad?

Hay que tener temple, concentración, dedicación y sangre fría.

Cualquier fallo en tu ronda de dos minutos puede hacer que caigas a los últimos puestos.

¿Qué consejos le darías a quien quiera iniciarse en el wakeskate?

Que se lo pase bien en el agua, que vaya paso a paso, y sobre todo ¡que disfrute de las sensaciones en cada truco y cada salto!

What are the value and skills that you would most stress when it comes to this speciality?

You need to have your wits about you, to concentrate, dedication and you also have to keep cool when you’re competing. In a round you get two minutes and any mistake can send you straight to the back of the field.

What advice would you give someone who wants to start wakeskating?

That they have a good time in the water and, like in anything else, it’s a step-by-step process. The main thing though is to enjoy it, the sensations that you get with each rick and each jump!

s el 3 de octubre de 2016. Después de un año de intensas aventuras por el Caribe, recorriéndolo arriba y abajo, crucé el Atlántico pasando por las Azores, hasta Oporto, y volví a las Azores con un grupo de amigos. Luego, a Lisboa y Baleares, 14.000 millas… y después de tantas navegaciones, recibo un email de una ONG que me ofrece llevar a un grupo de científicos a la Antártida.

Dos semanas más tarde, el 18 de octubre, después de sacar el barco del agua en nuestro varadero de Port Ginesta, hacer unas revisiones en los sistemas, motor, etc., parto junto con mi compañera Andreza, en dirección a Ushuaia, a unas 8.000 millas. No es demasiada distancia, si no tuviésemos que estar allí a primeros de enero. ¡Tenemos solamente dos meses y medio para llegar!

Llevaba en esta fecha once años navegando por el mundo, habiendo realizado diversos cruces del Atlántico. Incluso lo había cruzado en contra de los alisios, de vuelta a Europa, y eso significó unas 4.000 millas de ceñida. Aún y así nunca había estado más de 19 días de navegación sin hacer escala, y ahora me esperaban más de dos meses sin tocar tierra. No fueron difíciles, tuve vientos portantes, de más o menos intensidad, que para mí barco no implicaban la menor de las dificultades.

It’s October the third, 2016. After a year of intense adventures, sailing hither and thither round the Caribbean, I crossed the Atlantic once again, stopping off at the Azores, to Porto, then back to the Azores with a group of friends, and back once more to Lisbon, before sailing on to the Balearic Islands, 14,000 sea miles… And after so much time behind the mast I get an email, from an NGO, offering me the chance to take a group of scientists to the Antarctic.

Two weeks later, on October 18th, after taking her out of the water at our slipway in Port Ginesta and giving her a full inspection: systems, engine, etc., I set sail, accompanied by my companion Andreza, for Ushuaia, a distance of some 8,000 miles. This wouldn’t have been so far if we hadn’t had to be there by the beginning of January. Leaving us just two and a half months for the whole trip!

By this time I had spent eleven years sailing round the world, having crossed the Atlantic on various occasions; I’d even done it sailing into the Trade Winds, on the way back to Europe, 4,000 miles close-hauled against the wind. never been more than 19 days without a stop over, and now I was looking at over two months without landfall. In the end it wasn’t so hard; we had mostly following winds, of varying intensity, which didn’t represent the slightest difficulty for my boat.

We had our adventures, such as loading up with diesel in the north of Brazil, with the help of the local people, pushing a trolley across the beach loaded with drums, all the way to the nearest petrol station to fill them up. Or the time we stopped over in the south of Brazil to pick up a series of spare parts, which I had bought and had sent there so we could pick them up en route without wasting time on our tight schedule.

After a month and a half at sea, and with another four weeks still to go before reaching our final destination, we reached Argentina and the most complicated part of our voyage. Along the coast of Argentina, which we sailed from north to south, there are three vast bays, which should only be crossed when the weather is good, given that doing so against strong west-south-westerly winds means heading into waves of up to 8/10 metres. I can assure you that this is better left untried. Given the heavy seas on various occasions we were forced to seek refuge in small coves and sit out the storm that was preventing us from continuing on

Vivimos diversas anécdotas, como cargar gasoil en el norte de Brasil con la ayuda de unos nativos empujando un carrito por la playa cargado con bidones para ir hasta una gasolinera a buscarlo; o la parada en el sur de este mismo país para recoger algunos recambios que había comprado, y que hice que me mandaran allí para así poder recogerlos por el camino sin que me supusiera perder tiempo en la travesía.

Tras un mes y medio de navegación y faltando aun cuatro semanas para alcanzar el punto de destino final, llegamos a Argentina, donde empezaron las travesías más complicadas.

Este país tiene en su costa, que recorrimos de norte a sur, tres grandes bahías que hay que atravesar con buen tiempo, pues hacerlo con vientos fuertes del oeste-suroeste significa afrontar olas de 8-10 metros de altura. Lo puedo asegurar: es mejor no probarlo. Bajo estas condiciones de mar, en varias ocasiones tuvimos que buscar refugio en alguna cala y esperar que pasara el temporal que nos impedía continuar avanzando. Y también fue así en el estrecho de Magallanes, donde tuvimos que detenernos en una ocasión a causa de un tremendo temporal.

ocasiones, recibimos la cortesía de los argentinos. Esta vez fue de la mano del capitán de un remolcador que, también fondeado en espera de pasar el temporal, nos invitó a compartir la fiesta de fin de año con ellos. Yo no suelo perderme ninguna ocasión de disfrutar y confraternizar con quien sea y donde sea, de modo que esta vez no iba a ser menos…, aunque tampoco quería dejar mi precioso barco fondeado, solo y cabalgando las olas sin mi atención. La solución fue amarrarlo a la popa del remolcador, pasando gruesas estachas, y así estar completamente seguro. Ni que decir tiene que dimos buena cuenta del cerdo que estaba en la barbacoa y los diversos manjares que nos ofrecieron.

Tres días más tarde entrábamos en el puerto de Ushuaia, el más meridional del mundo, donde recogimos a nuestros compañeros que se embarcaban para las próximas etapas, y partimos hacia la Antártida. Tras abastecer el barco y pasar los papeleos, zarpamos para recorrer las siguientes y últimas 600 millas que nos separaban de la península Antártida. El cruce del cabo de Hornos, otra vez más, no nos deparó mayor complicación. Cuando nos hallábamos a poca distancia de llegar a tierra, la caprichosa meteorología impidió nuestra llegada, y durante unas 35 horas nos vimos obligados a capear un temporal con vientos superiores a los 60 nudos que nos llevó a derivar unas 40 millas hacia el oeste.

Por precaución, ya habiendo previsto la llegada de este temporal, los días anteriores habíamos navegado más hacia el este, de modo que esta deriva nos colocó en unas coordenadas correctas. Llegamos sin más complicaciones que el asistir en vivo a magníficas olas y vientos fortísimos.

La estancia en la Antártida transcurrió disfrutando de bellas e inacabables puestas de sol, paseos por glaciares, observando muchísima fauna salvaje: ballenas, orcas, delfines, pingüinos de diversas especies, lobos marinos, focas y aves… Inmerso en el espectacular escenario de la más bella naturaleza virgen, no me cansaba de observar esta insólita fauna. Durante esos días 57

our way. It was the same in the Strait of Magellan, where on one occasion we also had to anchor up as a result of the tremendous storm that was brewing. It was December 31st and once again, as on previous occasions, we were warmly welcomed by the Argentinians. On this occasion by the captain of a tug that was also anchored up, waiting for the storm to pass, and who invited us on board to celebrate new year’s eve with them. I don’t usually turn my back on an occasion to have fun and get to know people (anybody, anywhere) and this was no exception… Although I wasn’t too happy about leaving my precious boat anchored up and unattended, being tossed by the waves without my loving care.

The solution was to tie her off to the stern of the tug, using sturdy mooring ropes, making her completely secure. It goes without saying that we feasted mightily on the barbequed pig and other delights that our hosts offered us.

Three days later we sailed into the Port of Ushuaia, the world’s most southerly port, where we welcomed our companions aboard for the next stages of our journey, before heading off for the Antarctic. After taking on supplies and filling in all the paperwork we cast off for the next, and last, 600 miles of our outward journey, the distance that separated us from the Antarctic Peninsula. We rounded Cape Horn, once more, on this occasion without too many complications, although when we were close to landfall the whims of the weather prevented our arrival and, for some thirty-five hours we were obliged to ride out the storm, with wind speeds of over 60 knots blowing us some 40 miles to the west.

As a precaution, and as we knew that the storm was coming, over the previous days we had steered further to the east and, as a result, we now found ourselves at more or less the right coordinates and managed to make landfall without further complications, other than battling against the magnificent waves and brisk winds.

During our stay in the Antarctic we had the opportunity to delight in the beautiful and endless sunsets, to visit the glaciers, observing the wild fauna: whales, killer whales, dolphins, different species

of penguins, sea lions, seals and seabirds… Immersed in the spectacular and beautiful scenery of nature at its most virgin, I couldn’t get enough of the extraordinary fauna. During these Antarctic days we visited an old 18th century whaling factory and some of the scientific bases of the 24 countries that are represented on the continent. Yet the experience that will always stay with me, was bathing in the sea! Although this was done on beaches where the water was warmed by escaping volcanic gases, allowing us to swim with water temperatures of up to 30º.

After experiencing another Antarctic storm we once again set sail, across the dangerous Drake Passage, before rounding Cape Horn, where we got to witness first hand another immense storm. Without too many complications we managed to penetrate the Chilean fjords and, constantly accompanied by the local fauna, sailed the waters of the Pacific. We were astounded by the beauty of the different channels that we sailed through, although we had to take a great deal of care, fending off the ice floes that ceaselessly tried to surround us and claim us as their own.

Sin embargo, una experiencia que siempre recordaré fueron los ¡baños en el mar!, eso sí, en unas playas con afloramientos gaseosos volcánicos, que calentaban el agua y nos permitía sumergirnos y nadar en un agua a 30 grados.

Tras vivir otro temporal en la Antártida, partimos de vuelta para cruzar el peligroso estrecho de Drake, donde antes de llegar al cabo de Hornos, la meteorología de estas latitudes nos regaló el tercer gran temporal. Sin muchas complicaciones fuimos adentrándonos en los fiordos chilenos y, siempre acompañados de mucha fauna, navegamos por aguas del Pacífico. Los diversos canales por los que navegamos nos asombraron por su belleza, aunque por algunos de estos lugares nos desplazamos lentamente, apartando el hielo que quería sin cesar abrazarnos y tomarnos como propiedad.

that provided us with protection for the night, although when entering the bays our hearts would be in our mouths due to the profusion of submerged rocks and seaweed, and the difficulty of plotting a safe course.

At the end of March, and after three months in these latitudes, we set off once again on our return voyage, with another 8,000 sea miles before our bows, and this time without the following winds, forcing us for 5,000 miles to sail close hauled to winds that were a little too strong for comfort. But, given the lack of alternatives we were forced to do just that.

At the beginning of July Port Ginesta gave a warm welcome to my valiant yacht Geluk, which had said its farewells just nine months before. And so, as it was summer, and as we had our sailing legs, after a short break, we set sail once more for Italy, the Balearic Islands and other Mediterranean points of call.

At the end of October, a year after we had cast off, we were back once again in Port Ginesta, with another 26,000 miles sailed and notched up to our own particular account.

Today I’ve been sailing for 13 years and I’ve been to a multitude of beautiful places, but there is no doubt in my mind that one day I’ll be heading back to the Southern Cone and the Antarctic…

A primeros de julio Port Ginesta le dio la bienvenida a mi bravo velero Geluk, que se había despedido casi nueve meses antes. Y bueno, ya que estábamos en marcha y era verano, pues tras una rápida parada continuamos viaje para Italia, Baleares y más puntos del Mediterráneo.

Al final de octubre, y justo a un año de la partida, volvimos a entrar en Port Ginesta con otras 26.000 millas navegadas y sumadas en nuestra cuenta particular.

The importance of the antenna

»La ganancia de la antena es fundamental »The gain of the antenna is fundamental.

El alcance del VHF es en línea recta, por lo que la curvatura de la tierra lo limita. Por eso la antena se debe colocar lo más alto posible. En su instalación se deben evitar los empalmes en el cableado. Para un alcance óptimo, especialmente en barcos a motor que no tienen la altura del palo de un velero, es fundamental la ganancia de la antena (cuanta más ganancia más alcance), su calidad y la del cableado. Por tanto, no escatime presupuesto ni en el VHF ni en la instalación.

VHF range is line-of-sight, which means that it is limited by the earth’s curvature, which is why the antenna should be placed as high as possible. Installation should avoid cable splices. For optimum range, particularly on power yachts that do not have the high masts of a sailing yacht, the gain of the antenna is fundamental (the more gain the greater the range), along with the quality of the cable.

Consequently, do not skimp on either your VHF transmitter/ receiver or the installation.

o es infrecuente escuchar por el canal 16 del VHF de a bordo, reservado a la seguridad, conversaciones privadas entre barcos de recreo que están navegando o pescando. Por eso, más allá de la normativa de la DGMM, que establece qué equipos son obligatorios en función de la zona de navegación para las embarcaciones recreo, hay algunos aspectos básicos que todo patrón o navegante debe conocer para hacer un buen uso del equipo que lleva a bordo.

Recordemos dos cosas básicas: que el patrón es siempre el responsable de la emisora y que lo primero que debe hacerse al salir es conectar el VHF, que estará siempre en escucha en el canal 16, independientemente de que podamos seleccionar otros canales para comunicaciones entre barcos o con el puerto.

¿QUÉ LLAMADAS PUEDO HACER?

Los equipos VHF son de banda marina y vienen preconfiguradas con las frecuencias establecidas por la Unión Internacional de Telecomunicaciones. El canal de escucha permanente es el 16 y solo se usará en casos de emergencia o para establecer una comunicación inicial con otros barcos, pasando rápidamente a otro canal, en el caso de que no hayamos acordado previamente un canal de comunicación. When listening to a marine VHF radio, which is supposed to be reserved for distress calls; it’s not unusual to hear private conversations between leisure and/or fishing vessels. Which is why, apart from the regulations of the DGMM (Spanish Directorate General of the Mercantile Marine), which establish that a VHF radio is obligatory for leisure craft, depending on the area in which you are sailing, there are a number of basic aspects that all skippers and/or sailors should know, to ensure that they make good use of the equipment that they have on board.

There are two basic things to remember: that the skipper is always responsible for the transmitter/receiver and that the first thing that he should do after leaving port is connect the VHF. Your VHF radio must always be tuned in to receive channel 16, regardless of the fact that other channels can and should be selected for communications either between boats or with the port.

WHAT CALLS CAN YOU MAKE? VHF transmitter/receivers are marine band radios that are pre-tuned to the frequencies established by the International Telecommunications Union. The channel for permanent listening is channel 16, which must only be used in cases of emergency or to establish initial communication with other vessels, before passing rapidly to another channel, in those cases where a communications

Que significa DSC

What doe DSC stand for?

DSC son las siglas de Digital Selective Calling (llamada selectiva digital), una función que ya incorporan prácticamente todas las estaciones de VHF fijas modernas del mercado, y que es obligatoria en la mayoría de embarcaciones. Las emisoras VHF con DSC llevan un botón que al accionarlo emite un mensaje de socorro por el canal 70 dedicado exclusivamente a DSC con nuestro número de identificación MMSI y la posición GPS cada tres minutos hasta que la emisora reciba la señal ACK que indica que alguien ha recibido el aviso. Mientras no emite la llamada DSC, el equipo se mantiene automáticamente en el canal 16, canal por el que nos conectará Salvamento Marítimo.

DSC is the acronym for Digital Selective Calling, a function that is incorporated to practically all of the modern, fixed VHF stations on the market, and which is obligatory on most embarkations. VHF transmitters with DSC are fitted with a button that, when pressed transmits a distress call on channel 70, exclusively set aside for DSC messages and which will include your MMSI identification number and your GPS position, every three minutes, until the transmitter receives the ACK signal, indicating that somebody has received the message. When no DSC message is being transmitted the unit will remain automatically tuned to channel 16, the channel that connects us to Maritime Rescue.

What equipment is obligatory?

Llamada de Urgencia: cuando no hay peligro, pero sí urgencia.

Comienza por “Pan Pan” repetido tres veces seguido de “A todas las estaciones” otras tres o especificando el nombre de una estación costera o CCS. Llamada de Seguridad: comienza por “Securité” repetido tres veces. A diferencia de las dos llamadas anteriores, en ésta se anuncia el aviso que se va a transmitir y seguidamente se indica un canal de trabajo donde se emitirá el mensaje que corresponde a la llamada. Se usaría por ejemplo en caso de comunicar que hemos encontrado un peligro para la navegación (tronco, contenedor, objeto flotante…).

Llamada de Rutina: se hace inicialmente por el canal 16, que debe dejarse libre cuanto antes. Hay que comprobar que no hay tráfico en el canal para no interferir. Diremos el nombre de la estación a la que llamamos una vez y seguido el nombre de nuestra estación dos veces Cuando la otra estación conteste, dirá nuestro nombre y el suyo e indicar el canal al que cambiar para la conversación. Siempre será un canal que no corresponda a uso portuario o comercial.

URGENCY CALLS: When there isn’t any danger but there is a situation of urgency. Start with the words “Pan Pan”, repeated three times, followed by “All stations”, also repeated three times, or specifying the name of a particular coastguard or MRCS station.

SAFETY CALLS: Start with the word “Sécurité”, repeated three times. Unlike the two previous calls, in this case the warning that is to be transmitted is announced and immediately afterwards a working channel must be indicated on which the message corresponding to the call is to be transmitted. A safety call will be used, for example, in cases where a threat to shipping has been discovered, such as a tree trunk, floating container or other floating object….

ROUTINE CALLS: These are started using channel 16, although this channel must be left free as soon as possible as it is necessary to make sure there is no traffic on the channel, in order not to interfere. You then say the name of the station that you are calling, once, followed by the name of your own station, twice. When the other station answers they will give your name and their own name and will indicate the channel on which the conversation is to continue. This must always be a channel that does not correspond to port or commercial uses.

Making sure you are correctly moored in port is a guarantee of safety, for your boat, the port and your neighbours on the jetty. The port hands will often have to run an eye over everybody’s moorings when the sea starts to get up a bit, so let’s save them any extra work, and get a good night’s sleep, by making sure your boat is safely moored.

There’s nothing complicated about making sure that your boat is safely moored and well protected with fenders. All you need are three basic knots, as well as knowing which one to use, and the most suitable ropes for the specific purpose, both in terms of the material they are made of and their length. So here we go, one step at a time.

LOS CABOS

ROPES

Para las amarras se usan generalmente los cabos de poliamida o poliéster de tres cordones. Son los que más resisten a los rayos ultravioleta, aunque los tendremos que cambiar con cierta frecuencia y son, además, los que tienen la mejor relación calidad precio para el uso a que están destinados. Hay que disponer de un completo juego a bordo y revisar periódicamente su estado.

Cada cabo, en función de su uso, recibe un nombre concreto: Largos: uno para proa y otro para popa. Evitan que el barco se mueva adelante o atrás cuando estamos abarloados. En atraques de punta se usarán en popa, uno a cada banda a las cornamusas del pantalán.

Springs: hay que tener dos, de longitud como mínimo igual o superior a la eslora del barco. Si se cobra de ellos, acercan la proa o la popa al muelle.

Traveses: mantienen el barco unido al muelle cuando el viento sopla de allí. Podemos tener dos, pero generalmente basta con 67

Three-strand polyamide or polyester ropes are usually used for mooring, as they are the most resistant to sunlight, although you will still have to replace them on a fairly regular basis. They are also the best value for money ropes for this particular use. You will need to keep a complete set on board and will also have to check their condition on a regular basis.

Each rope has a specific name, depending on its use: Long bow and stern lines: one for the bow and the other for the stern.

These lines serve to prevent the boat from moving backwards and forwards. In the case of Mediterranean (stern-to) mooring both of these lines can be tied off at the stern to cleats on the jetty, one on each side.

Springs: you will need two of these, which should be as long as or a little longer than the boat. By taking up the slack you can bring either her bow or her stern in closer to the quay.

Quarter Springs: these should be longer than the breast ropes, given that they are often tied off to exterior buoys, in order to keep the boat from being pushed up against the jetty during mooring, particularly when there is a strong sea breeze. While this is a situation that doesn’t often arise in marinas it is always worthwhile having at least one quarter spring aboard.

To recap, you should make sure you have the following mooring ropes on board: at least two long lines for tying off the bow and stern, two springs and one breast rope. These ropes should always be kept wellcoiled in the lockers in the cockpit, ready for use when required.

BASIC KNOTS There are three essential knots that you ought to be able to tie with your eyes closed: the bowline, the clove hitch and the mooring hitch.

The bowline and the mooring hitch are used to tie her off to the mooring cleats on the jetty. The clove hitch, on the other hand, is the safest knot for tying off and rigging up your fenders. The clove hitch can be used by simply passing it through the cleat or, in order to secure it, by passing it through the supports.

LOS NUDOS BÁSICOS

Tres son los nudos esenciales que deberemos saber hacer con los ojos cerrados: el as de guía, el ballestrinque y la vuelta mordida.

El as de guía y la vuelta mordida sirven para hacer firme la amarra en la cornamusa del pantalán. El ballestrinque es el nudo más seguro para colgar las defensas. El as de guía puede usarse pasándolo simplemente por la cornamusa o, para asegurarlo, pasarlo por el interior de los soportes.

Si tenemos que amarrar a un noray, usaremos el as de guía o un ballestrinque momentáneamente. Cuando tengamos que hacer firme la gaza del as de guía en el noray siempre lo haremos por dentro de la gaza del as de guía preexistente. De esta forma todos nos podremos liberar en un santiamén sin soltar al otro.

ELEGIR LAS DEFENSAS

Las defensas son los parachoques de nuestro barco y por ello deberemos elegir las más adecuadas entre las diferentes tipologías. Generalmente, con las defensas cilíndricas nos bastará, pero si tenemos espacio a bordo, nunca está de más disponer de una esférica o bumper, para colocarla donde se 68

requiera en caso de emergencia, y de una en media luna para proteger la proa del pantalán si amarramos de punta. También las hay de tipo colchoneta, para proteger superficies planas. Lo esencial para que sean efectivas es colocarlas a la altura adecuada.

Si amarramos en un muelle, lo correcto es colocarla justo por encima de la línea de flotación, de forma que la defensa coincida con la parte más saliente del muelle o pantalán.

Si nos abarloamos con otros barcos deberemos colocar al menos una en la manga máxima de nuestro barco y la del casco del vecino.

En cuanto al tamaño, una aproximación para elegirlas es la de contar unos 1,5 centímetros de diámetro por cada metro de eslora. Así, para un barco de entre 40 y 50 pies utilizaremos defensas de unos 25 centímetros de diámetro.

LA MANIOBRA

Todos los cabos deben estar preparados y las defensas puestas desde el momento en que entremos en puerto. Los cabos deben estar desazocados, enrollados en cubierta y —importante— pasados por debajo de los candeleros de proa o papa, según sea el caso.

Además de las defensas en las bandas, que deben quedar a media altura del francobordo o enrasadas en la regala, siempre tendremos una defensa libre lista para ser colocada donde convenga, en caso de fallo de la maniobra de atraque.

En función del número de tripulantes, uno se colocará en proa y otro en popa. Si atracamos de popa al muelle, el tripulante de proa recogerá la guía del muerto que le dará el marinero y se la llevará a proa para hacerla firme y evitar que el espejo del barco golpee el muelle.

Generally speaking, cylindrical fenders are all you will need, if you have sufficient space for them aboard, although it is always worthwhile to keep a spherical fender, or bumper, on board for use in cases of emergency, as well as a half-moon fender for protecting the bow, if you are mooring bow-to. There are also mattress types, for protecting flat surfaces. The essential thing, for making sure they will be effective, is to rig them at the correct height. If you are moored alongside a quay, it is best to rig them just above the line of floatation, so that the fender coincides with the part of the quay or jetty that projects outwards.

When mooring alongside other boats you will have to rig at least one of the fenders between the side of your boat and your neighbour’s hull.

With regard to size, an approximation for choosing this is to consider a diameter of 1.5 centimetres for each metre of the boat’s length. Thus, for a 30 to 50-footer you should use fenders with a diameter of around 25 centimetres.

THE MANOEUVRE Whenever you enter a port you should have all of your ropes ready and your fenders in position. The ropes should be unknotted, without snags, loosely coiled on deck and, importantly, tied off underneath the bow or stern stanchions, as the case may be.

As well as fenders placed along her sides, which should be rigged halfway down the freeboard, or flush with the gunwale, you must always have a spare fender ready to be inserted wherever it may be required, just in case you encounter any problems with the mooring manoeuvre.

Depending on your available crew, have someone standing at the bow and someone else at the stern. If you are mooring stern-to, the crew member at the bow will take in the lazy line, passed over by the port

hands, and will lead it to the bow to tie it off, to avoid the boat’s transom colliding with the quay.

The crew member at the stern will pass the mooring ropes to the port hand, who will tie them off. It is the crew member that will then, from the cockpit, have to haul her in or let her out. as estadísticas que Salvamento Marítimo elabora anualmente reflejan que más de la mitad de las emergencias marítimas atendidas se deben a embarcaciones de recreo. No son porcentajes extraordinarios, pues se corresponden con los registrados en países de nuestro entorno. Las estadísticas muestran que entre el 60% y el 65% de las emergencias protagonizadas por la flota de recreo surgen a lo largo de los cuatro meses de vacaciones estivales.

Las mismas estadísticas señalan el error humano como una de las causas principales de los accidentes, seguida por los fallos mecánicos.

Piense que la carencia de material adecuado y obligatorio, o bien deficientemente mantenido y manipulado, agrava cualquier situación de riesgo.

Por ello, después de un prolongado amarre, que es lo más habitual en la flota de recreo, se recomienda: • Comprobar la estanqueidad de portillos y escotillas.

• No consentir nunca la presencia de agua, sola o acompañada de hidrocarburos, en la sentina. En caso de existir, busque su procedencia. Seque totalmente la sentina.

• Eliminar cualquier trozo de trapo o de papel en la sentina, ya que puede obstruir la bomba de achique cuando más la necesitamos.

• Revisar la estanqueidad de las válvulas de fondo, toma de agua de mar para la refrigeración del motor, buen estado del filtro de agua salada, desagües de sanitarios y fregadero, corredera, sonda, etc.

The statistics drawn up by Marine Rescue every year show that over half of the maritime emergencies that they have to deal with are related to leisure boating. The percentages are not extraordinary, when compared with the numbers registered by neighbouring countries, and yet the statistics show that between 60 and 65% of all emergencies involving leisure boats occur over the four months of the summer holiday season.

The same statistics also indicate human error as one of the main causes of these accidents, followed by mechanical breakdowns.

Remember that the lack of adequate or obligatory materials, or materials that have been badly maintained or mishandled, will aggravate any risk situation that may arise.

This is why, after prolonged mooring in port, which is often the case with leisure boats, it is recommended that you: • Make sure that your portholes and hatches are water tight.

• Never accept the presence of water, either on its own or mixed with hydrocarbons, in the bilges. If you have water in your bilges find out where it’s coming from and dry them out completely.

• Eliminate all rags or pieces of paper in your bilges, given that they could end up clogging up your bilge pump when you most need it.

• Make sure the bottom and engine cooling seawater intake valves are water tight, check the condition of the saltwater filter, toilet and sink drains, slides and sounders, etc.

• Tie a made-to-measure, conical wooden bung to each valve, in case they need to be urgently stopped.

• Check your saltwater and freshwater hoses and pipes, doubling the number of clamps and making sure they are tight.

• Check the electrical system (rusted plugs and sockets, worn or brittle wiring).

GENERAL CONDITION OF YOUR ENGINE OR MOTOR You will need to inspect your engine/motor and the housing, looking for possible fuel, cooling water or lubricating oil leaks, checking all of the hoses. Make sure your oil levels are correct and that the circulation of the saltwater for cooling is correct.

Other points to be taken into account • Check your anchoring/mooring elements (anchors, snap hooks and chains) and make sure that the ends of the chains are firmly attached to the hull.

• Check that your batteries and navigation lights are fully charged.

• Check the supply of electrical energy to the communications and navigation equipment.

• Make sure you have detailed charts and sailing directions.

• Do not have more people aboard than permitted by the regulations.

Welcome Halophytes

All along the Catalan coast you will find a particular type of plant life, completely different from the kinds of plants that thrive inland.

The plants that grow around here are characteristically compact subshrubs, a type of growth that, along with the development of thorns, as well as hairs on their leaves, ensures effective protection against the constant intensity of the winds and the appearance of possible enemies.

Another point to bear in mind is the way in which these plants absorb water, along with the corresponding nutrients, in order to survive in these saline environments, depending on the majority component (80-90% of weight in herbaceous plants and 50% in woody plants) and we must also take into account that plants cannot live in salt water.

Plants that thrive, or just survive, in saline environments are known as halophytes, a term originally proposed by the American geologist E. Meinzer (1876-1948), a composite of two Greek terms halos (salt) and phyton (plant); often translated as “salt lovers”.

Of all plant species, 2% are considered to be halophytic, although drawing up a definitive list is complicated, given that the level of resistance of many plant species to saline exposure is not specifically known.

Halophytes may be “obligate”, i.e. those that can only thrive in saline environments, or “facultative”, which simply means that they have some resistant to high saline environments.

Las plantas que viven en esta zona se caracterizan por ser subarbustos de aspecto compacto. Este tipo de crecimiento, junto con la aparición de espinas y también pelos en las hojas, les asegura una protección eficaz contra la constante intensidad del viento y la aparición de posibles enemigos.

Otro punto a tener en cuenta es cómo realizan el proceso de absorción de agua con sus correspondientes nutrientes para sobrevivir en estos ambientes salinos, ya que es su componente mayoritario (80-90% del peso fresco en herbáceas y 50% en leñosas) y debemos tener en cuenta que las plantas no pueden vivir con agua salada.

A estas plantas que viven, o sobreviven, en ambientes salinos se les denomina halófilas, término propuesto por el geólogo de los Estados Unidos de América E. Meinzer (1876-1948). Esta palabra está compuesta por los términos griegos halos (sal) y filo (amante); por tanto, su significado es literalmente “amante de la sal”.

Las plantas halófilas representan el 2% de todas las especies vegetales. Aún así, es complejo hacer una lista dado que se ignora con precisión la resistencia a la exposición salina de muchas plantas.

Well, what they do, by means of morphological adaptation, is to compensate for the salinity of the soil by absorbing many salts into their cytoplasm, part of the cell, at a concentration superior to that of the location, expulsing the excess by way of different structures, usually salt glands or salt secreting hairs. Some of these plants have special glands that help them to gradually reduce the salt in their structure, or to concentrate the salts in the tissues of their leaves, which subsequently die off.

One peculiarity is that some of them, given that they have such a short lifespan, will achieve the conditions required for reproduction in a very short period of time, particularly coinciding with periods of the year where there is high rainfall and when the concentration of salt will be lower. They also consume a lot of energy expelling the

La presencia excesiva de sal en el suelo puede ocasionar problemas de competencias entre determinados nutrientes, ya que es un sistema vivo que incluso respira, dado que consume oxígeno por los microorganismos y raíces de los vegetales para oxidar la materia orgánica a CO2 y obtener energía.

¿CÓMO SE LAS APAÑAN PARA SOBREVIVIR? Pues lo que hacen, a través de adaptaciones morfológicas, es compensar la salinidad del suelo absorbiendo muchas sales en el citoplasma, que es una parte de la célula, a una concentración superior a la del lugar y expulsando su exceso a través de diversas estructuras que suelen ser glándulas de sal o pelos secretores de sal. Algunas poseen glándulas especiales que les ayudan a reducir gradualmente la sal dentro de su estructura o concentran las sales en los tejidos de sus hojas que más tarde mueren.

Una particularidad es que algunas de ellas, al tener un ciclo de vida corto, llegan al estado de reproducción en poco tiempo, coincidiendo sobre todo con épocas lluviosas del año en que la

The 31st edition of the Ruta de la Sal, the Barcelona leg of which, sailing from Port Ginesta, brings one of the highest levels of participation, will be remembered as a particularly tough race, marked out by major tactical complexities, as well as a trial in which competitors accredited an extraordinary sporting level. Reaching Sant Antoni de Portmany was far from easy: with a brisk westerly sweeping down over this part of the Med, which eventually turned into a storm, with wind speeds of up to 35 knots, making sailing extremely difficult and turning La Ruta de la Sal into a race solely apt for authentic offshore sailing experts. Stress must also be placed on the extraordinary sporting qualities of this event, which today more than ever is staking its claim as the most important offshore race in the whole of the Western Med.

Tras una regata muy dura en condiciones difíciles solo gobernables por equipos muy bien gestionados y con experiencia en la navegación de altura, el ganador absoluto de la versión Barcelona de La Sal 2018 con salida desde Port Ginesta fue el GS 50 Marjuin de Pere Roquet Portella de CN del Balís, con un registro de 20h, 06m, 40s para las 140 millas desde la salida, siendo la segunda plaza de la general del grupo para el Dont Ask, un First 50 de Alberto Fucale, y la tercera de esta versión para el Bandido, el Dehler 44 de Carlos y Juan Otamendi Busto del CN de Garraf.

En la versión Denia, se proclamó campeón el First 50 Cóndor de Javea de Carlos Fernández-Martos, que cubrió las 120 millas de esta largada en un tiempo de 18h, 22m, 23s. La segunda fue para el Náutic Café del Mar un Espada 34 del armador ibicenco Juan Carlos Sanchís del CN de Sant Antoni, cerrando el podio, en tercer lugar, el británico Jumbuck un J109 de John Alison del RORC. After a really tough race, in the most difficult of conditions, in which only the best managed teams with most experience in offshore racing were able to compete, the absolute winner of the 2018 Barcelona leg, sailing out of Port Ginesta, was Pere Roquet Portella (CN Balís) with his GS 50 Marjuin, which logged 20 hours, 6 minutes and 40 seconds for the 140 sea miles from Port Ginesta.

Second place in the general for this group went to Alberto Fucale’s First 50, Don’t Ask; while third place was for Carlos and Juan Otamendi Busto CN Garraf) with their Dehler 44, Bandido.

el 20 al 22 de abril se disputó la Regata del Delta, con un recorrido de 87 millas con salida desde Marina Port Ginesta y llegada en Sant Carles de la Ràpita.

También se celebró la VI Edición de la Mini Delta, de 35 millas, con salida desde el CN l’Ampolla y el mismo puerto de llegada.

Las calmas impidieron que ninguna de las embarcaciones que salieron de Port Ginesta pudiera cruzar la línea de llegada dentro del tiempo límite. El último en retirarse, a 25 millas de meta, fue el Don’t Ask, First 50 de Alberto Fucale, que tras más de 19 horas de navegación encabezaba la flota.

The Delta Regatta, which was held from 20th to 22nd April and covers a route of 87 sea miles, starts out from the Port Ginesta Marina and finishes in Sant Carles de la Ràpita.

At the same time the 8th edition of the Mini Delta was also held, covering 35 sea miles, from CN l’Ampolla and with the same finishing point.

Unfortunately the intense calm prevented any of the boats that left from Port Ginesta crossing the finishing line before the time limit was up. The last one to give up the ghost, still 25 sea miles from Sant Carles, was Don’t Ask, a First 50 belonging to Alberto Fucale, which was leading the fleet after over 19 hours at sea.

l viernes 18 de mayo por la tarde se dio la salida a la XXI edición de la regata de altura Bahía de Pollença – Trofeo Alfonso Echegaray, con un recorrido entre Marina Port Ginesta y el RCN Port Pollença de 104 millas y puntuable para el Campeonato de Cruceros de Altura, Solitarios y A Dos. Un débil viento permitió salir a la flota compuesta por 25 embarcaciones. Pero al alba el viento cayó por completo y las comunicaciones de retirada se fueron sucediendo. A mediodía del sábado 19 de mayo el grueso de la flota ya había lanzado la toalla. Entrada la tarde, solo quedaban tres barcos en liza: el Bandido, tripulado a dos, el Inteman Barakah y el Coneix.com, patroneados en solitario por Daniel Martín y Miquel Delclós, respectivamente.

Las tres embarcaciones que resistieron finalmente pudieron disfrutar un role que les permitió hacer caminar los barcos con algo de aparente hasta situarlos a las 12 de la noche a unas 20-25 millas de la llegada, a seis horas de que expirara el tiempo límite.

A pesar del encomiable espíritu deportivo y competitivo reinantes, las calmas nocturnas en las proximidades de cabo Formentor apenas les permitieron avanzar, provocando que no pudiera llegar ningún barco antes de las seis de la mañana, y que por lo tanto se tuvieran que declarar desiertos todos los trofeos, una situación inaudita en las XXI ediciones de esta regata.

On the afternoon of Friday 18th May the 21st edition of the Pollença Bay Offshore Race –Alfonso Echegaray Trophy finally got underway, from the Port Ginesta Marina to the Port Pollença RCN, a distance of 104 sea miles, and with points awarded going towards the Offshore Cruisers’, Single-handed and Double-handed Championships.

A gentle breeze allowed the fleet, consisting of 25 boats, to set sail, although this disappeared completely as the sun went down and, one by one, the withdrawals started to come in. At midday on Saturday 19th most of the fleet had already thrown in the towel and by the early afternoon only three boats remained in contention: Bandido, a double-hander, Inteman Barakah and Coneix.com, single-handedly crewed respectively by Daniel Martín and Miquel Delclós.

In the evening the three remaining boats finally managed to pick up a breeze that had, by midnight, brought them to within 20-25 sea miles of the finishing line, with just six hours left on the clock before the time limit kicked in.

Sadly, and despite the commendable sporting and competitive spirit that prevailed, the night-time calm off Cape Formentor brought all three to a virtual standstill and, as a result, nobody managed to cross the finishing line before six in the morning. This meant that no trophies were awarded, an unprecedented situation in any of the previous 20 editions of this race.

l fin de semana del 6 al 8 de abril tuvo lugar en Port Ginesta el Campeonato de Catalunya de Cruceros ORC 2018 - V Trofeo Sailing Meeting, que estuvo fuertemente marcado por las difíciles condiciones de viento.

El Campeonato supuso un duro trabajo para conseguir finalmente realizar una prueba. El sábado se estableció aplazamiento en tierra a causa del fuerte viento, con más de 30 nudos y no se pudo llevar a cabo ninguna prueba. El domingo por contra el viento bajó a más de la mitad lo que complicó establecer el campo de regatas. Tras anular la primera prueba por falta de viento y de varios desplazamientos, finalmente se pudo realizar una prueba válida, en la zona delante del Garraf, con unos 10 nudos de viento.

Con esta única prueba del domingo, se alzaron como ganadores Des-Ahogo (1º), Yrcus II (2º) y Rats on fire (3º) en ORC 0-1 QM Nàutic. L’Immens (1º), Slick (2º) y Miriapodo (3º) en ORC 2 Ausmar; y Tramendu (1º), L’Oreig (2º) y Vértigo Dos (3º) en ORC 3-4 Sail Select.

El Campeonato, organizado por tercer año consecutivo por el Club Marítim Port Ginesta en colaboración con Sailing Meeting, por delegación de la FCV, ha contado con la participación de una veintena de embarcaciones de primer nivel, entre las cuales dos unidades TP52.

The ORC 2018 Catalonia Cruisers Championship – V Sailing Meeting Trophy, held at Port Ginesta on the weekend of 6th to 8th April, was decisively affected by the arduous wind conditions.

The difficulty at this Championship was managing to successfully run any of the trials. The program on Saturday had to be postponed on land, due to strong winds of over 30 knots, which made sailing virtually impossible. While on the Sunday wind speeds dropped by over 50%, making it difficult to establish the course for the races. After cancelling the first trial, they finally managed to complete a valid trial, with wind speeds of around 10 knots.

Consequently, with just one trial on the Sunday, the winners turned out to be Des-Ahogo (1st), Yrcus II (2nd) and Rats on Fire (3rd), in the ORC 0-1 QM Nàutic; L’Immens (1st), Slick (2nd) and Miriapodo (3rd)in the en ORC 2 Ausmar; and Tramendu (1st), L’Oreig (2nd) and Vértigo Dos (3rd)in the ORC 3-4 Sail Select.
