PRESENTACIÓN PRESENTATION Acompañamos ilusiones

A

venturero, Diávolo, Lucero, Altair, Totoritas, Diansoal, Panxut, Gaia, Montse, Relax, Dolce Vita, Saliar, Atlántico, Bora-Bora… Miles son los nombres de los barcos que han pasado por Port Ginesta en los últimos treinta años.

Cada uno de ellos con un significado especial para su armador: una isla, una estrella o constelación, la suma de unas sílabas o iniciales del nombre de los seres queridos, un mote o nombre familiar, un estado de ánimo, un sueño, y así, una gran cantidad de sentimientos e ilusiones que, de alguna manera, hemos compartido con todos ellos.

Algunos armadores, cuando cambian su barco por uno mayor, y aunque éste sea de segunda mano, cambian el nombre por su preferido y empiezan a numerarlo: segundo, tercero cuarto, etc.

Otros, cambian el barco en un momento de su vida en el que sus circunstancias han cambiado o evolucionado y, por lo tanto, el nombre apropiado para el nuevo barco es otro. ¡Qué ilusión volver a pensar en un nombre nuevo!

Pocos son los armadores que compran un barco ya bautizado y se conforman con un nombre que no hayan elegido ellos, aunque algunos lo mantienen porque se enamoran del barco y del nombre, y lo hacen suyo.

Una vez elegido el barco y bautizado, navegarlo y disfrutarlo, como si de un hijo se tratara, es la finalidad.

Desde Port Ginesta, seguiremos acompañando ilusiones y aprendiendo de las evoluciones de todos nuestros navegantes.

We accompany illusions Aventurero, Diávolo, Lucero, Altair, Totoritas, Diansoal, Panxut, Gaia, Montse, Relax, Dolce Vita, Saliar, Atlántico, Bora-Bora… The names of the boats, of all shapes and sizes that have passed through Port Ginesta over the last thirty years, are in their thousands.

Each having a special meaning for her owner: an island, a star, a constellation, the poetry of a few syllables, a loved one’s initials, a nickname, a state of mind, a dream, and so on. So many feelings, flights of fancy, that we have, in our own small way, shared with them all.

Most owners when they change up to a bigger boat, even if she’s second hand, will change the name for one that suits them better, and will even start numbering them: the second, the third, the fourth, etc.

Others may change boats at a time when their circumstances have changed or evolved, and, as a result the appropriate name for the new boat will be something different. What a buzz it is, once again to be thinking of a new name to christen your boat!

Few owners, when buying a boat that’s already been christened with a name they didn’t choose, decide stay with it, though some do because they fell in love with both the boat and her name, deciding to make it their own.

Once the boat has been chosen, and christened, the thing is to get out in her and enjoy her, as if she were your daughter.

From Port Ginesta, we will continue to accompany flights of fancy and to learn from the experiences of all our sailors.

l monasterio de San Sebastián dels Gorgs es un antiguo cenobio benedictino que se encuentra en el pequeño núcleo urbano al cual da nombre, en la localidad de Avinyonet del Penedès, en la comarca del Alt Penedès, a solo 34 km de Port Ginesta.

Una magnífica excusa para una excursión en coche de un día desde Port Ginesta es la visita al monasterio de Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs, declarado por la Generalitat de Catalunya Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional en el año 2000.

La ruta desde Port Ginesta cruza el macizo del Garraf por una estrecha carretera panorámica que atraviesan el singular paisaje del Parque Natural y es el pretexto para disfrutar de una jornada que nos permitirá combinar la gastronomía, la enología, el arte, la historia y el disfrute del entorno natural.

The monastery of San Sebastià dels Gorgs is an ancient Benedictine monastery in the cenobitic tradition, which is located In the centre of a small village from which it takes its name, in the Avinyonet area of the Penedès, in the county of Alt Penedès, just 34 km from Port Ginesta. A visit to the monastery of Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs, declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Generalitat of Catalonia in 2000, is a magnificent excuse for an excursion, by car, from Port Ginesta.

The route from Port Ginesta crosses the massif of El Garraf on a narrow road with panoramic views that snakes its way through the singular landscape of this National Park, offering a pretext for a day out hat will allow you to combine gastronomy, oenology, art, history and enjoyment of the beauties of nature.

EN EL SIGLO XI

THE 11TH CENTURY

El monasterio fue fundado en el año 1030, en la antigua capilla prerománica de Els Gorgs, dedicada a San Sebastián, que fue reformada y a la cual se añadió el campanario. En el año 1059, por un pacto entre Mir Geribert, Vizconde del Penedès, y el abad del monasterio de San Víctor de Marsella se convirtió en Priorato y pasó a depender del cenobio francés, construyéndose entonces el ala de poniente del claustro. En 1380, a causa de los daños producidos por el terremoto de 1373, tuvo que construirse un nuevo ábside. No fue hasta 1409 que el monasterio se ligó a la abadía de Montserrat, la cual en 1606 lo reformó, reduciéndose la nave de la iglesia, lo que obligó a situar la portada románica donde se encuentra actualmente, se construyeron silos de grano, se reformó el claustro y se levantó la capilla del Roser. De esta época son las curiosas molduras en relieve de los techos de los pisos del campanario, con motivos paganos.

En 1821 se exclaustró y fue secularizado y posteriormente subastado con la desamortización de 1821. En 1823 se segregó en diferentes propiedades, excepto la iglesia que pasó a depender de la vecina parroquia de Avinyonet.

The monastery was founded in 1030, on the site of the old preRomanesque chapel of Els Gorgs, dedicated to Saint Sebastian, which was subsequently reformed and had a bell tower added. In 1059, following an agreement between Mir Geribert, Viscount of the Penedès, and the Abbot of the monastery of San Víctor, Marseille, the monastery was converted into a priory and became dependent on the French monastery. It was during this period that the west wing of the cloister was built. In 1380, as a result of the damages caused by the earthquake in 1373, a new apse had to be built. In 1409 the monastery became attached to the Abbey of Montserrat, which took charge of its renovation in 1606, reducing the nave of the church, which required the relocation of the Romanesque façade to its present position, two grain silos were also built, the cloister was renovated and the Roser chapel was added on. The unusual relief mouldings on the ceilings of the different levels in the bell tower, with their pagan motifs, date back to this period.

In 1821 the church was secularised and subsequently sold off during the 1821 expropriations. In 1823 the land was divided up into different properties, except for the church itself, which became dependent on the neighbouring parish of Avinyonet.

Construido entre los siglo XI y XII, se conserva la iglesia del priorato, el claustro, las dependencias y el campanario. La iglesia es de nave única a la cual se adosa por levante el ábside de planta cuadrada, construido en época gótica. El campanario, románico de tradición lombarda, es un prisma de superficie cuadrada, con planta baja y tres pisos comunicados por una escalera de caracol, en el que se abren dos ventanas geminadas por fachada.

Del claustro románico se conserva íntegramente el ala norte, formada por dos parejas de arcos que se sostienen en columnas y capiteles esculpidos con talla a bisel con entrelazos, algunos de los cuales muestran parejas de grifones y figuras humanas o motivos vegetales.

De las otras alas todavía se pueden contemplar algunos arcos, con sus columnas y capiteles, todos ellos esculpidos con temáticas diferentes.

WHATS TO SEE Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, the priory church was conserved, along with the cloister and other outhouses, plus the bell tower. The church only has a single nave, onto which the square floor plan apse was built, in the Gothic period. The Lombardy Romanesque bell tower is a squareshaped prismatic structure, with a ground floor and three upper floors, joined by a spiral staircase and with two mullioned windows opening out from each floor.

The Romanesque cloister on the north wing is completely unspoilt, consisting of two pairs of arches sustained on columns with intertwined bezel-carved capitals, some of which show pairs of gryphons, human figures or plant motifs.

Some of the arches from the other wings can still be found, with their columns and capitals intact, all sculpted with different themes.

The Route

La ruta cruza el Parc Natural del Garraf pasando por el edificio, ahora monasterio budista, de La Plana Novella, que merece una parada y una corta visita. Sigue hasta el municipio de Olivella. También ahí podremos detenernos para visitar el Castell Vell d’Olivella, cuyos restos están coronados por una torre circular del siglo XVIII. Construido en el año 992 está situado en una colina desde donde se disfruta de la vista de todo el municipio. A no perderse tampoco en esta breve parada la iglesia del Castell Vell del siglo XIII, situada cerca del castillo de estructura románica tardía, de una sola nave de planta rectangular con ábside liso.

Siguiendo la ruta y tras cruzar la carreta nacional N-340 y dejar atrás la población de Sant Cugat de ses Garrigues, finalizamos el trayecto en Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs.

La vuelta se puede hacer por la C-15 y la C-244 que pasa por la población de Sant Miquel d’Olèrdola, Sant Pere de Ribes y Sitges. En total serán 34 km de ida y 40 de vuelta.

The route crosses the El Garraf National Park, running right by the La Plana Novella building, now a Buddhist monastery, which is worth stopping at for a short visit. Continue on to the municipality of Olivella, where you can also stop to visit the Castell Vell d’Olivella. A circular tower, dating back to the 18th century, overlook the remains of this castle, which was built in 992, located on a hill that affords views out over the municipality as a whole. In this brief stop also make sure that you don’t miss the 13th century Castell Vell church, located next to this late Romanesque style castle, with its single nave, rectangular floor plan and flat apse.

Continuing along the route, after crossing the N-340 national road and leaving behind the town of Sant Cugat de ses Garrigues, the trip comes to an end at Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs.

You can come back on the C-15 and C-244, passing through the towns of Sant Miquel d’Olèrdola, Sant Pere de Ribes and Sitges. A round trip of 34 km.

BARCELONA The Soul of Barcelona Barcelona, milenaria, mantiene el encanto de algunos de sus barrios de la ciudad vieja, del barrio Gótico o del barrio de La Ribera, próximo al mar. El Born es, uno de los rincones de la Ciudad Condal más entrañables, hoy atractivo del turismo moderno, pero también de imprescindible visita.

Barcelona, millenary, still maintains the enchantment of some of the old city’s historical neighbourhoods, such as the Gothic Quarter or the La Ribera District, close to the sea. El Born is one of Barcelona’s most charming corners, and an essential spot to visit.

as laberínticas callejuelas de El Born invitan a perderse. Es el alma del barrio de La Ribera, comprendido entre el parque de la Ciutadella hasta la Via Laietana, y por el norte y sur, por la calle Princesa y la avenida del Marqués de Argentera, cerca de la franja litoral.

El Born —que literalmente significa torneo, por los desafíos caballerescos que allí se celebraban en la Edad Media— con más de dos mil años de historia, formaba ya parte de la actividad extramuros de la Barcino romana y, siglos más tarde, su expansión convirtió esta zona en el Quarter del Mar, hasta que a finales del siglo XIII inició su crecimiento, llegando hasta el mar y propiciando el comercio y la economía de la ciudad.

Sin embargo, el esplendor económico llegaría en los siglos XVI y XVII con un notable desarrollo de los gremios y el comercio.

Tres siglos antes, no obstante, esta zona tuvo un protagonismo especial al ser el escenario de los torneos entre caballeros y todo tipo de actos públicos, tales como fiestas religiosas (actos de la Inquisición) y paganas (Carnaval), y ferias como la de la argentería o el vidrio.

Hoy El Born es una de las zonas más atractivas para el turismo y también para los barceloneses, que encuentran en este barrio antiguo y singular una amplia oferta comercial y cultural. Tiendas de moda y suvenires se alternan con infinidad de bares, restaurantes, pizzerías y heladerías, algunos locales con larga tradición e historia, como el Xampanyet, histórico, donde la bebida emblemática de la casa es el champán elaborado con vino blanco gasificado, reclamo de un público curioso que lo degusta insaciable, en particular los estudiantes extranjeros. Este establecimiento, da la entrada a la calle Moncada, vía señorial flanqueada por varios palacios, entre los que destacan el de Dalmases, por ejemplo. Y aquí es referencia el Museo Picasso, ubicado en el palacio del Barón de Castellet, anexo al palacio Aguilar —fácilmente identificable por las eternas colas que colapsan esta estrecha calle peatonal—, donde se conservan varias obras de principal importancia del pintor malagueño. Este museo, abierto en 1963, es el segundo más visitado de Barcelona (el protagonismo, según las estadísticas, se lo arrebata el del Barça), y fue creado a instancia de Jaime Sabatés, amigo íntimo y secretario del pintor, y gracias a la donación de 52 pinturas y dibujos al Ayuntamiento de Barcelona. Alberga exactamente 4.249 obras, que lo convierten en uno de los más importantes del mundo.

El Born’s labyrinthine streets and alleys invite you to lose yourself, representing the soul of the La Ribera district, marked off by Ciutadella Park on one side and Via Laietana on the other, and to the north and south by Calle Princesa and Avenida del Marqués de Argentera, close to the line of the coast.

El Born, which literally translates as “the tournament”, was so-called because of the jousting that took place there during the Middle Ages The area has over two thousand years of history, originally forming part of the extramural activity of Roman Barcino before, centuries later, being expanded to constitute the Quarter del Mar area and then, around the end of the 13th century, being extended as far as the coast.

Nevertheless, the area was not to achieve its economic splendour until the 16th and 17th centuries, with the notable development of the guilds and trade.

Three centuries earlier the area played a special role as the site for the jousts organised between knights, along with a wide variety of other public events, both religious (the inquisition hearings) and pagan festivals (such as Carnaval), along with trade fairs for products such as silver or glassware.

Today, for the people of Barcelona, El Born is also one of the city’s most attractive areas, due to this historic and singular district’s extensive commercial and cultural offer. Fashion boutiques and souvenir shops alternate with endless bars, restaurants, pizzerias, ice-cream parlours, some of which with a long tradition and plenty of history, such as the Xampanyet bar, where the emblematic champagne based, made from sparkling white wine, an attraction for an inquiring and thirsty public.

This establishment can be found at the start of Calle Moncada, a stately street flanked by a series of “Palacios” (mansions) including, among others, both Palacio Dalmases and the Picasso Museum, occupying the old Palacio Aguilar, which houses a number of the Malaga painter’s most important works. This museum, which opened in 1963, is Barcelona’s second most visited museum (according to the statistics the most visited is the Barcelona Football Club Museum), and was founded by Jaime Sabatés, an intimate friend of the painter and his secretary, thanks to the donation of 52 paintings and sketches by Barcelona City Council. The Museum is home to precisely 4,249 works, making it one of the most important in the world.

EL COFRE Y LAS CUATRO BALAS DE CAÑÓN The iron chest and the four cannon balls

En el centro del paseo de El Born, sobre un banco de piedra se encuentra un enorme cofre de hierro, hermético y sólidamente sujeto, con color de herrumbre. En el siguiente banco, cuatro bolas de cañón, referencia medieval del barrio, en otra época centro de la alta sociedad, se integran en el paisaje urbanístico como conjunto escultórico creado por Jaume Plensa en 1992 con motivo de la Olimpiada Cultural, acontecimiento paralelo a las Olimpiadas de Barcelona.

In the centre of Paseo del Born, sitting on a stone bench, you will find a large, hermetically sealed, rust-coloured and solidly fixed iron chest, while four cannon balls sit under the next bench along, a reference to the District’s history, which in another age was home to high society, integrated into the urban landscape as a sculptural group, created

by Jaume Plensa in 1992 as part of the Cultural Olympiad, an event that was held at the same time as the Barcelona Olympics.

EL MERCADO DE ELTHEBORN EL BORN MARKET The El Born market, which received the go ahead from the city council back in 1783, is the result of a project drawn up by the architect Josep Fontseré.

This vast structure, which was completed the following year, initially served as the District’s market, until 1907, before being converted into city’s main food market, up until 1971, when this was transferred to Mercabarna, in the Zona Franca area.

The building is a magnificent example of castiron architecture, with its rectangular floor-plan, consisting of two intersecting domes, plus four smaller naves, forming a single volume, supported by cast-iron columns, with cast-iron tie beams supporting a roof of flat, glazed tiles.

In the 1980’s, while work was being done to adapt the building for use as the library for the province of Barcelona, they discovered extraordinarily well conserved archaeological remains, dating back to the Middle Ages, which showed the evolution of the La Ribera district from the 14th century until it was destroyed during the siege of 1714, in the War of the Spanish Succession.

Currently this formidable building, with its impressive cast-iron structure, operates as the Born Cultural Centre, an open-doors space, home to a permanent, as well as temporary, exhibitions showing the ruins of the ancient La Ribera District citadel, a must visit due to its depiction of a significant remnant of the history of Barcelona.

El mercado de El Born fue aprobado por el ayuntamiento de la ciudad en 1783 bajo un proyecto del arquitecto Josep Fontseré. La enorme estructura se finalizó al año siguiente y fue, primero, el mercado del barrio hasta 1907, y posteriormente la base principal de abastos de la ciudad hasta 1971, que se trasladó a Mercabarna, en la Zona Franca.

Es un magnífico ejemplo de la denominada arquitectura de hierro, con una planta rectangular dominada por grandes naves principales que se cruzan, complementadas por otras cuatro menores formando un gran volumen único, roto por los pilares de fundición y tirantes de hierro que soportan la gran cubierta de teja plana vidriada.

En la década de los 80, durante unas obras de adaptación para ubicar ahí la Biblioteca Provincial de Barcelona, fueron hallados unos restos arqueológicos de la época medieval en muy buen estado, que muestran la evolución del barrio de La Ribera desde el siglo XIV hasta que fue destruido en 1714 tras la Guerra de Sucesión.

Actualmente, esta formidable nave con su impresionante estructura de hierro es el Born Centre Cultural. Espacio de puertas abiertas que se ha convertido en una zona de paso y alberga una exposición temporal y otra permanente de las ruinas de la ciudadela antigua del barrio de La Ribera.

Un espacio de visita obligada y muestra un retazo importante de la historia de Barcelona.

EL PASEO POR EL PASSEIG

El eje de El Born es el passeig, paseo, que va desde el Centro Cultural hasta la iglesia de Santa Maria del Mar. La acera central, con dos laterales sin apenas circulación, es escenario de titiriteros, paso de ciclistas para evitar las calzadas adoquinadas, y reposo de turistas en los bancos repartidos a lo largo de la calle. El passeig está flanqueado por restaurantes y bares, tiendas comercios de alimentación, algunos tan curiosos, como la conocida Botifarreria de Santa Maria (tienda de butifarras) que las tiene hasta de chocolate. Este paseo se abre a la vez a otras calles que invitan a deambular sin rumbo fijo, como la del Rec (del riego), con sus porxos (soportales) del siglo XVIII; la calle Calders (caldereros); o de la Vidreria; o de la Fortmatgeria (quesería); o de Flassaders (manteros), que recuerdan el asentamiento de los gremios durante el esplendor comercial de esta zona. La mayoría de las calles del barrio llevan los nombres de los gremios que las ocupaban en la baja Edad Media, como corders, llana, assaonadors, cotoners, esparteria, sombrerers, vidreria, blanqueria, agullers, habitadas por artesanos que tejían cuerdas, salaban la comida, cardaban materiales varios para elaborar hilo y tejidos, soplaban cristal… Y si hay una referencia en este barrio es la esquina de las calles Mirallers con Carassa, donde una cara femenina (para algunos de ángel) de

A STROLL ALONG THE PASSEIG The main axis of the El Born district is its Passeig, or boulevard, which runs from the Cultural Centre to the church of Santa Maria del Mar. The central pavement, plus its two barely-used side roads, offer puppet shows, a cycle path that avoids the cobbled street surface, and plenty of benches for tiring tourists to take the weight off their feet. The Passeig is flanked by restaurants, bars and food shops, some of which are as odd as the well-known Botifarreria de Santa Maria (a shop selling typical country-style sausages) with such unusual ingredients as chocolate! This boulevard also opens out onto a series of side streets, coaxing visitors into aimless wandering, such as El Rec (from irrigation), with its 18th century porxos (arcades); Calle Calders (cauldrons); Calles Vidreria (glassmaking), Fortmatgeria (cheese-making), or Flassaders (blanket makers); a reminder of the different guilds that occupied these streets during the time of the area’s commercial splendour. Al final del passeig, éste se estrecha por la calle de Santa Maria cediendo espacio a la monumental basílica de Santa Maria del Mar y el Fossar de Les Moreres, que la rodea hasta llegar al pórtico principal, ante una amplia plaza, ocupada por terrazas siempre llenas de público comiendo a todas horas, en invierno con estufas al aire libre bajo el abrigo de las sombrillas, y en verano protegiéndose del sol.

Aquí nace la calle de l’Argentería (platería) vía con célebres locales de hostelería, como el Senyor Parellada, emblemático y 20

At the end of the Passeig, we find the narrow Calle de Santa Maria, squeezed between the monumental Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar and the Fossar de Les Moreres square, which runs alongside it as far as the main portal. Bella, elegante y sobria, es una excelente muestra arquitectónica del gótico catalán del siglo XIV, que se levantó sobre la antigua capilla de Santa María de las Arenas del año 998.

La nueva iglesia se construyó entre 1329 y 1383 por iniciativa del canónigo Bernardo Llull, y el maestro de obra y diseñador del edificio fue Berenguer de Montagud. La realización de esta formidable iglesia fue posible gracias a las donaciones y al trabajo voluntario de las gentes del mar, y los distintos gremios y comerciantes de la época.

Es un monumento impresionante por su altura y estilizadas formas, majestuosa, que guarda entre sus peores recuerdos el seísmo del 2 de febrero de 1428, dramático episodio que destruyó parte de la iglesia y, con la caída de las piedras del rosetón, según las crónicas, 25 personas murieron al intentar huir y otros tuvieron la misma suerte asfixiados y aplastados por la salida descontrolada de los que querían salir.

El rosetón fue repuesto a mediados del siglo XV, respetando el original, pero de mayor tamaño.

Resalta en su interior la gran nave central con las dos laterales formando un espacio único, con las capillas a los lados situadas entre los contrafuertes de las naves secundarias.

Una joya arquitectónica de visita imprescindible.

Beautiful, elegant and subdued, an outstanding example of 14th century Catalan Gothic architecture, built on the ruins of the ancient chapel of Santa María de las Arenas, which in turn dates back to 998 AD. The new church was built between 1329 and 1383, on the initiative of canon Bernardo Llull, while the master builder and designer of the building was Berenguer de Montagut. The construction of this formidable church was made possible by donations and voluntary work done by the people of the sea, and by the different guilds and traders of the period.

The basilica is an impressive monument, in terms of its height and stylised, majestic forms, which also bears witness to the earthquake that struck the city on 2nd February 1428, a dramatic episode that destroyed part of the church, due to the collapse of the rose window. According to contemporary chroniclers, 25 people died trying to flee, while others met the same fate, crushed and suffocated during the mad rush to escape from the interior of the church.

The rose window was replaced in the middle of the 15th century, respecting the original design, though larger in size.

The interior of the church is magnificent, with its vast central nave and its two lateral aisles, forming a singular space, with the chapels at the sides, located between the buttresses of the secondary naves.

An architectural jewel that has to be seen.

EL FOSSAR DE LES MORERES Opposite the side façade of Santa María del Mar, on the street of the same name, you will find the Fossar (cemetery) de les Moreres, an ancient parish burial site, located alongside the church, which was pulled down in 1816. Today it is a monumental square, refurbished in 1989, in order to immortalise this space, of immense historical value, which is believed to be the burial place of the fallen in the defence of Barcelona in 1714, during the siege by the troops of Philip 5th.

A tall torch is kept permanently lit in memory of those heroes.

e le califica como escultor figurativo de vanguardia. Nació en Roma, inició su carrera en Nueva York y reside en Castelldefels.

Su obra se ha expuesto en galerías, museos y espacios públicos de todo el mundo y tanto su arte monumental como sus piezas más pequeñas e íntimas transmiten su pasión por los valores eternos y las emociones auténticas. Nos dice que vivir y trabajar en Castelldefels, en pleno Mediterráneo, le aporta vida y armonía. Lorenzo Quinn, con quien compartimos este trozo del Mediterráneo, es un artista universal que tiene mucho que comunicar.

P. ¿Cómo ha evolucionado conceptualmente desde sus inicios?

R. No creo que la obra haya evolucionado en estilo. Han pasado 30 años desde que empecé y la escultura es ahora más contemporánea.

Empleo sobre todo materiales más modernos, pero la esencia es la misma. Quizá uso más estructuras geométricas acompañando las figuras y las piezas son un poco más simbólicas, pero la evolución ha sido más que nada en los materiales. Antes usaba solo bronce y ahora uso también piedra, acero inoxidable, aluminio, acero corten…

Described as an avant-garde figurative sculptor, Lorenzo Quinn was born in Rome, began his artistic career in New York and is currently living in Castelldefels. His work has been exhibited in galleries, museums and public spaces around the world and both his monumental art and his smaller more intimate pieces have succeeded in transmitting his passion for eternal values and authentic emotions. He tells us that living and working in Castelldefels, on the Mediterranean coast, has brought him a new love of life and inner harmony. Lorenzo Quinn, with whom we share this patch of the Mediterranean, is a universal artist with plenty to say.

Q: How have you evolved, conceptually, since you started?

A: I don’t think that the work has evolved in terms of style. 30 years have gone by since I started and sculpture today is more contemporary. I now use more modern materials, but the essence is the same. I also use more geometrical structures to accompany the figures, and the pieces are a little more symbolic, but more than anything else the evolution has been in the materials. Before

I only worked in bronze and now I’m using stone, stainless steel, aluminium, COR-TEN steel …

Q: So what does the Mediterranean bring to your work?

A: A whole lot of life, plenty of sun and harmony. The ambience in New York was very stimulating, creative and dynamic, but the work was harder than what I’m creating right now. Now I’m talking much more about love, couples, bringing together races and cultures, wanting to live… I’m always trying to seek that nexus that brings us together. In New York, on the other hand, the work was much darker, I was talking about life, death, but then again I was also younger. The natural space that we live in influences all of this.

Q: Why is it that hands are a recurring motif in your work?

A: For me it is important to be able to communicate the messages that I want to get across. I have to do that in a way that is understood on a universal level. I put on shows all around the world, also in Muslim countries where the human form is not allowed. Through hands I’ve been able to create this bridge between cultures. Hands allow for a direct dialogue that people can understand.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?

A: By talking to people, reading a book, a poem, from sayings…

What I’m looking for is universality, communication, dialogue…

I’m inspired by messages that bring people together. In my work I’m an optimist, maybe not so much in life, but in my work I am.

Q: Each work is displayed along with one of your texts, why is that?

A: The works start with a text. I want to say something, and the first thing I do is identify the title of the work. I don’t get up and think now I’m going to do a man sitting and a woman standing … For what? Why? I need to have an idea of what I’m going to do, and I need to know why I’m going to do it. So, the work starts with a text and then I then develop that, which inspires an image. I display the texts alongside the sculptures because I want people to know how they came about and what they mean.

I don’t want the critics to explain the work; I want to do that myself, directly.

Q: Some of your piece shave been donated, auctioned or exhibited to collect funds for solidarity, to promote the arts or charitable organisations…

P. ¿Qué aporta el Mediterráneo a su obra?

R. Mucha vida, mucho sol y armonía. El ambiente de Nueva York era muy estimulante, creativo y dinámico, pero la obra era más dura que la que estoy creando ahora. Ahora hablo mucho de amor, de parejas, de unir razas y culturas, de ganas de vivir… Intento siempre buscar este nexo que nos une. En Nueva York en cambio la obra era más oscura, hablaba de temas de vida, de muerte, y encima era más joven.

En esto influye el espacio natural donde vivimos.

P. ¿Por qué son las manos son un motivo recurrente en su obra?

R. Para mí es muy importante poder comunicar los mensajes que quiero divulgar. Lo tengo que hacer de forma que se entienda a nivel universal. Expongo en todo el planeta, también en los países musulmanes, donde no se permite la forma humana. Con las manos he podido crear este puente entre culturas. Las manos permiten un diálogo directo que la gente entiende.

P. ¿Dónde encuentra la inspiración?

R. Hablando con la gente, leyendo un libro, una poesía, en el refranero… Lo que busco es esta universalidad, esta comunicación, este diálogo… Me inspiran los mensajes que unen a la gente. En mi obra soy un optimista, luego quizás en la vida no lo soy tanto, pero en mi obra sí.

P. Cada obra se exhibe con un texto suyo ¿Por qué?

R. Las obras empiezan con un texto. Quiero decir algo y lo primero que hago es identificar un título de la obra, tengo que tener un motivo para hacer una escultura. No me levanto y digo ahora voy a hacer un hombre sentado o una mujer de pie… ¿Para qué? ¿Por qué? Necesito tener una idea de lo que voy a hacer y saber por qué lo voy a hacer. Así, la obra nace con un texto, lo desarrollo y este inspira una imagen. Expongo los textos al lado de la escultura porque quiero que la gente sepa cómo surgió y lo que significa. No quiero que sean los críticos que den la explicación de la obra, la quiero dar yo directamente.

P. Algunas de sus obras han sido donadas subastadas o exhibidas para recaudar fondos de solidaridad, fomento de las artes u organizaciones benéficas…

R. Creo que en la vida hay que ser coherentes y consecuentes. Tengo una escultura que se llama “Dar y recibir” y otras como ella que hablan precisamente de esto: lo que siembras recoges... Y eso no puedes solo decirlo, tienes que hacerlo. Por tanto cuando puedo me gusta aportar mi grano de arena a obra social, porque hay muchas 28

causas ahí afuera que merecen la pena y mucha gente que necesita ayuda.

P. Su escultura “Dar y recibir” está ubicada en el paseo marítimo de Castelldefels. ¿Qué importancia tiene la obra pública en su creación?

R. Honestamente, es un enorme orgullo ver tu obra en un ambiente público. Ves niños y gente conectando con ella, tocándola, haciéndose fotos, leyendo los textos… Una obra pública tiene que conectar, tiene que permitir este intercambio. Luego, además, vas creando tu legado de esta forma... El día que ya no esté aquí estará mi obra, será un testigo atemporal de algo que fue pero que sigue siendo.... Es un poco como engañar al tiempo.

P. En 2012 introdujo la joyería en su creatividad ¿Qué nos cuentan sus joyas?

R. Estoy muy ilusionado con este proyecto. Como he dicho, en la vida hay que ser coherente y consecuente y las joyas lo son porque son obras llevables. Son mis esculturas adaptadas a joyería pero 29

Q: Your sculpture “Give and Receive” is installed on the Seafront Promenade in Castelldefels. What importance do public works have in your creation?

A: Honestly, it’s a source of great pride to see your work in a public sphere. To see kids and people in general connecting with it, touching it, taking photos, reading the texts … A public work has to connect, has to allow for this exchange. Then, on top of that, that’s how you build up your legacy... When I’m no longer here my work will be, will bear timeless witness to something

siempre llenas de significado, de emoción. Una joya debe ser decorativa, pero si además transmite un mensaje mucho mejor.

Esta nueva vertiente me ha estimulado muchísimo, para crear joyas pero también he creado esculturas basándome en diseños que había hecho para joyas. Es decir, que se benefician las dos partes.

P. Una de sus pasiones son las motos y las rutas por el entorno de Catelldefels y el Parque Natural de El Garraf.

R. Las motos me dan mucha vida. Comparto momentos fantásticos con mis amigos, y consigo ver lugares a los que no habría podido llegar. Vivo aquí hace tiempo, pero conozco gente de aquí de toda la vida que conoce una décima parte de los sitios que conozco yo. También voy en bici, pero el radio es menor. A veces, y es una lástima, nos tachan casi de terroristas, pero la verdad es que respetamos y cuidamos muchísimo el entorno natural porque nos encanta.

P. Le gusta compaginar el trabajo con la vida familiar, los amigos y la buena gastronomía. ¿Alguna recomendación especial?

Q: In 2012 you introduced jewellery into you creativity, what do your jewels tell us?

A: I’m really excited with this project. As I said, in life you have to be coherent and consequent, and the jewels are, because they are work that you can wear, my sculptures adapted to jewellery, while still being full of meaning, and emotion. A jewel must be decorative, but if it also transmits a message much better. This new angle has really stimulated me a lot, for the creation of jewels but also for the creation of sculptures basing myself on the designs I’d worked up for the jewels. You know, it’s been beneficial in both directions.

Q: One of your passions is motorbikes and riding the routes that crisscross the El Garraf National Park.

A: Bikes give me so much life. They allow you to share fantastic experiences and you get to see places that otherwise you would never have got to. I’ve been living here for a while, but I know people who have spent their whole lives here and only know a

R. La premisa es que estoy muy contento viviendo aquí y siempre que vuelvo de un viaje es como una fiesta: me gusta celebrar la vuelta. Si es entre semana casi siempre vamos a Port Ginesta, a nuestro lugar preferido, Napolitani D.O.C., donde nos sentimos como en casa. Y sobre todo nos encanta como son, el recibimiento, el puerto, el ambiente familiar. También vamos a otros locales fuera del puerto como el Fosbury, que está al lado de mis esculturas, o Las Botas que está debajo de casa. Cuando estoy con los amigos y cuando quiero pasar un rato diferente y divertido voy al BarbaRossa. Como soy motero y americano, me lo paso muy bien ahí.

P. Vive en pleno Mediterráneo. ¿No le tienta navegar?

R. Sí que me tienta y tuve una moto de agua en el puerto...

También tenemos una casa en Ibiza y cada año alquilamos un barco en agosto. Estamos en el Mediterráneo y el puerto es fantástico por lo que nos hemos planteado muchas veces tenerlo, pero el tiempo es limitado y no puedes hacerlo todo. Toda la familia adoramos el mar y la náutica… creo que acabaremos teniendo un barco de propiedad.

Q: You like to combine work and family life, friends and Good Cuisine.

Do you have any special recommendations?

A: It’s like a party; I like to celebrate getting back. If it’s during the week we almost always go along to Port Ginesta, to our favourite spot, Napolitani D.O.C., where we really feel at home. We also go to other places, such as the Fosbury, which is alongside my sculptures, or Las Botas, on the street beneath where I live. When I go out with my friends, or do something a little different, I go to Barba-Rossa. As I’m a biker, and an American, I have a great time there.

Q: Living right on the Mediterranean, aren’t you tempted to sail?

A: Yes, I am tempted; I had a jet ski at the port... We also have a house in Ibiza, and every year we hire a boat in August. The port is fantastic and we’ve often thought about getting one, but time is limited. The whole family just love the sea, and sailing… I’m sure sometime we’ll end up getting a boat of our own.

l principio no prestó atención. Iba saltando a la pata coja, intentando no tropezar con la manguera que alguien había dejado atravesada en el pantalán. No debía cerrar bien el grifo y se estaba formando un pequeño charco en el suelo. El goteo desde el pantalán cre4aba un sonido refrescante al caer sobre el agua oscura del puerto. De pronto, como un golpe de timbal que remarcase la melodía del goteo, un ¡chap! Fuerte, cercano, hizo que el chico parase en seco de dar saltitos y mirase sorprendido hacia el centro del canal. No se veía nada anormal, salvo los conocidos círculos crecientes con los que el agua protesta cuando alguien rompe su reposo. Por lo demás, nada de nada. Bueno, lo de siempre. El agua del puerto, en la que el sol ponía cintas de colorines atravesando las manchas de gasolina o aceite. Una botella de plástico cabeceaba al compás de las ondas concéntricas. ¡Lástima de piedra! —pensó el chico—. Pero en aquel puerto encontrar cemento era fácil, pero piedras, lo que se dice piedras… ni una. Tenía que correr hasta la playa, al otro lado del espigón, y si lo hacía, su madre pondría el grito en el cielo.

At first he paid no attention, he was hopping about from one foot to the other, trying not to trip over the hose that someone had left lying across the jetty… they mustn’t have closed the tap properly because a puddle was beginning to form on the ground, and the sound it made, dripping down from the jetty into the dark waters of the port, was refreshing. Suddenly, like a rimshot ringing out to punctuate the soft melody of the dipping water, a sharp, hard CLACK -close by- stopped him in his tracks as, startled, he turned to look out at the centre of the channel. There was nothing unusual to see, apart from the spreading, concentric ripples mirroring the water’s protest at the interruption of its repose. Apart from that, nothing at all, other than the usual, that is the lapping of the water in the port, on the surface of which the sunlight dappled coloured patterns, highlighting the floating petrol and oil stains. A plastic bottle bobbed up and down, in time with the spreading ripples. “If only I had a stone!”, the boy thought, but in the port there was plenty of cement but stones, what you could call stones… not a single one! He’d have to run over to the beach, on the other side of the breakwater, and if he did that his mum would be screaming blue murder.

No soportaba que el chaval se alejara demasiado mientras ella atendía el tenderete de artesanía que, los domingos por la mañana, montaba frente a la pizzería del puerto. Seguramente era uno más entre los muchos que, a lo largo del paseo superior, el de los restaurantes y demás locales, formaba un salpicado de colores frente a la frialdad gris del cemento. Pero a Abdulla-him su tenderete le parecía el más grande, el más bonito, el mejor.

Normalmente era el padre quién atendía la venta, pero hoy había tenido que ir a la ciudad. Abdulla-him hubiese querido ir con él, pero el apeadero estaba algo lejos del puerto y, además, dos billetes costaban demasiado, aunque los chicos pagasen tarifa reducida. ¡Chap, chap! Ahora alcanzó a verlo. Era un pez grande. El más grande que jamás había visto en el puerto. Probablemente el mayor que había entrado en Port Ginesta. Había dado dos saltos consecutivos, de costado, cayendo a plomo sobre el agua, que salpicó hasta la altura del pantalán. Abdulla-him dio un respingo. ¡Aquello sí que era un verdadero pez! Seguro que si mordía el anzuelo de aquel tío de la mallorquina, el que sacaba la caña disimulando por debajo del toldo, arrastraría la caña, el hombre y hasta la barca. Abdulla-him se rio, él solo, gesticulando, imaginándose la escena. ¡Chap! Ahora estaba allí, casi debajo del muchacho. El pez y el chico se miraron un momento, asombrados ambos: el chico por el tamaño del pez; le pez, probablemente, por el color negro del chico. Abdulla-him rebuscó en su bolsillo: allí tenía, además de una chapa de Coca-Cola, restos de pan de Alá sabe qué bocata. Lo partió en tres trozos, tiró dos al pez y, lentamente, se comió el tercero. Rápidamente acudió un banco de pequeños peces que agitaron el agua con sus voraces bocados y su huida. Pero el pez grande no se movió. Continuó mirando al muchacho unos segundos más y luego, de repente, con un giro imprevisto y rápido, se perdió hacia el fondo.

Abdulla-him no pudo quitarse al pez de la imaginación en todo el día. Seguro que su hubiera entendido el lenguaje de los peces le hubiese contado cosas de su país, del Camerún, de África.

Pero él, por no saber, no sabía ni siquiera hablar el idioma de su nuevo país, la que había llegado con su familia hacia poco más de un año. Por eso, y por estar “sin papeles”, como decía su padre, no iba a la escuela y se pasaba el día en el tenderete.

Por supuesto, esto no le importaba, pero echaba en falta algún amigo con el que poder jugar. Tal vez aquel pez también buscaba algún amigo con quien divertirse… El pez, por grande, no podía jugar con los otros más pequeños; y él, por muy chico, no encontraba compañeros en aquel mundo de adultos. La verdad es que no podía quejarse, porque aquel marinero grandullón que siempre iba en bicicleta, le daba a veces algún caramelo y con 33

She couldn’t bear to see the kid going too far afield while she attended to the handicraft’s stall that they set up on Sunday mornings in front of the pizzeria in the port. It may only have been one of the many that appeared along the length of the top walkway, were the restaurants and other establishments were located, forming an ad hoc sprinkling of colour against the cold grey background of the cement, but for Abdulla-him their stall was the biggest, the prettiest, the best. It was usually his father who manned the stall, but today he’d had to go to the city. Abdulla-him would have liked to go with him but the station was a long way from the port and, also, the tickets were too expensive, even though kids went half price.

Clack, clack! This time he saw it, it was big fish, the biggest fish he’d ever seen in the port, probably the biggest fish that had ever swum into Port Ginesta.

It had made two consecutive sideways leaps, plunging back into the water with a splash that reached the height of the jetty.

Abdulla-him gave a start. Now that was a real fish! He bet that if this fish took a bite on the hook of the guy fishing on the llaut mallorquina, surreptitiously there under the awning, it would drag off the rod, the guy and even the boat too. Abdulla-him laughed to himself, gesticulating, imaging the scene.

Clack! There it was again, almost under his feet. For a moment the fish and the kid exchanged glances, both taken aback. The kid by the size of the fish, and the fish, probably, by the black colour of the kid. Abdulla-him searched in his pocket, where he found, apart from a Coca-Cola cap, a bit of bread from a sandwich, Allah only knew from when! He divided it into three pieces, threw two to the big fish and, slowly, ate the third himself. A school of small fish rapidly appeared, thrashing about in the water in their voracious feeding, then fled. But the big fish stayed where it was, continued to gaze at the kid for a few seconds, then suddenly, with a lithe and unexpected turn, angled down into the water and disappeared.

Abdulla-him couldn’t get the fish out of his head all day long. For sure if he’d known the language of fishes he would have told the fish things about his country, Cameroon, about Africa. But he didn’t, he didn’t even know the language of his new country, where he’d arrived with his family a little over a year ago. Which is why he didn’t go to school, and also because they did not have “papers”, as his father said, why he spent the day hanging around the stall. Of course, this didn’t bother him, though he did wish he had a friend to play with.

Maybe that fish had been looking for a friend to have fun with…

Because being a big fish he could hardly play with the other, smaller fish, while he himself, being still small, couldn’t find any companions in that world of adults. Though, in truth, he couldn’t complain, because the big seaman who always went about on a bike, would sometimes give him sweets, and with his enormous hands would ruffle his tight black, curly hair, thick as the pile on a carpet. But then

Eran “las pelotas del capitán”, le dijo un día el viejo del tenderete vecino a su padre, y éste estuvo un rato riendo. Él no sabía bien por qué, pero también se rio al ver las risas de su padre.

Entonces se le ocurrió la idea. No había olvidado aquel día en que alguien le llevó a ver unos peces enormes, mucho más grandes que el que acababa de ver, que jugaban con dos chicas y un chico en una gran piscina, con enormes pelotas de colores, dando saltos y empujando con el hocico, mientras todos aplaudían divertidos.

Esa era, sin duda, la manera de hacerse amigo de un pez grande. El problema era encontrar las pelotas. Había tenido una pelota que se encontró en la playa, pero un día la perdió.

Sin embargo, allí estaban las pelotas del capitán que, además, eran del puerto, es decir, que eran, seguramente, las que les gustarían a los peces de allí, para jugar con ellas. Y con él.

Así, que fue de tenderete en tenderete y cogió, sin decir nada a su madre, las grandes tijeras que ella empleaba para cortar los cartones de los envoltorios. Entusiasmado comenzó la dura tarea de ir cortando y agrupando las bolas de cabo de cada pantalán.

Después las fue tirando, una a una, al agua, justo en el lugar donde había visto saltar al pez grande…

Desde aquel día y sin conocer el motivo, los amarristas de Port Ginesta encuentran atados burdamente todos los cabos que cierran las entradas a los pantalanes. Y también desde entonces, todos los domingos, al atardecer, un chavalín africano se sienta, siempre en el mismo sitio del pantalán, esperando inútilmente que su amigo el pez grande salte para jugar. Pero el gran pez no ha vuelto a aparecer. No se sabe si fue capturado por el pescador furtivo de la mallorquina, o si es que se olvida de la hora de los saltos, jugando por el fondo y divirtiéndose con las pelotas del capitán.

Then he had an idea. He hadn’t forgotten the time that someone took him to see some enormous fishes -much bigger than the one he’d just seen in the port- that played with two girls and a boy in a vast swimming pool, with enormous coloured balls, leaping out of the water and pushing the balls with their snouts, while everybody applauded and had fun. That was it, that was the way to make friends with the big fish. The problem was how to find the balls. He used to have a ball, which he found on the beach, but one day he lost it.

But of course, there they were, the captain’s balls, which belonged to the port, and so, without a doubt, must be the ones that the fish from thereabouts would like to play with, and so would play with him too.

So, he went back to the stall and, without saying anything to his mum, took the big scissors that they used to cut the cardboard packaging, and with enthusiasm set about the difficult task of cutting off and collecting the rope balls from each jetty, which he then threw, one by one, into the water, just where he’d seen the big fish jump…

From that day on, and without knowing why, the people with boats moored at Port Ginesta, have found all of the ropes used to close off entry to the jetties sloppily tied together. And also, since then, every Sunday, as the sun slowly sets, an African boy can always be found, sitting in exactly the same spot on the jetty, waiting in vain for his friend the big fish to come out and play. But the big fish has never come back. It is not known whether he was caught by the furtive fisherman on the llaut, whether he’s forgotten what time he’s supposed to jump, or whether he’s just playing on the bottom with the captain’s balls.

The waters of Port Ginesta are particularly attractive for people who practice the more extreme nautical sports. By which we mean surf, windsurf, kitesurf as well as, and why not, paddle or SUP.

L

as arenas que rodean nuestro puerto, aparte de la típica actividad de playa y bañistas en la época estival, tiene dos aspectos que merecen un especial interés. Por un lado, la actividad de naturaleza y medio ambiente, con una biodiversidad y vida en la arena poco visibles pero importantes. Y por otro, una “fauna” surfera y de deporte de playa, que aparece para jugar con las olas cuando las condiciones lo permiten… cosa que sucede bastante a menudo.

La zona sur del puerto invita a ampliar los horizontes y hacer pequeñas singladuras hacia las costas del Garraf.

Las motos acuáticas han dominado desde hace años esta parte del litoral, pero últimamente, la llegada del Stand Up Paddle o SUP (una tabla de surf donde el surfista va de pie y rema para desplazarse), la ha dinamizado mucho más.

The sands that surround our port, apart from typical beach and bathing activities in the summer, present two aspects of particular interest. On the one hand, there are nature based activities, given the significant level of biodiversity, while on the other, we also have the appearance of a surfing and beach sports “fauna”, who turn up to play among the waves.

The area to the south of the port is perfect for visiting the Coasts of the Garraf. For any years now, this part of the shore has been dominated by jet skiers, although more recently it has been invigorated by the arrival of Stand Up Paddle, or SUP as it’s known (a surfboard on which the surfer stands and paddles in order to move him/her self).

stamos en tiempo de caballas y jureles y su abundancia es relativa siempre contando con una mar en buen estado y corrientes favorables. ¿Cómo pescarlos de una forma divertida?

Muy sencillo; coja un aparejo o bajo de línea de los más modernos, esos que vienen con tres perlas de doble eje o tres micro emerillones, y habilítelos para montar tres gametas y sus respectivos anzuelos. Un metro de longitud es ideal, así, bloqueando una perla en cada punta y otra en el centro, puede montar tres gametas de hasta 45 centímetros de longitud, una medida perfecta para nuestros planes.

Como lastre, y teniendo en cuenta que vamos a pescar en fondos de 30/70 metros, podemos poner un jig de hasta 120 gramos, subiendo hasta 150 si vemos que la corriente es bastante alta. Para asegurar picadas, el anzuelo del jig se puede sustituir por una popera de tamaño medio, pero siempre de alta resistencia. En cuanto a los anzuelos, no es necesario que sean muy grandes; un tamaño comprendido entre los números 2 y 6 nos dará un buen resultado, ahora bien, en todos los casos hay que buscar anzuelos fuertes y de punta extra afilada, con una muerte bastante pronunciada. En lo que concierne al hilo de la gameta, si el bajo de línea está compuesto por monofilamento de 0,45 mm, los anzuelos deben atarse como mínimo con hilo de 0,26 mm, y un máximo de 0,30 mm.

Para el bajo de línea recomendamos hilos sin memoria o de fluorocarbono, algo más rígidos, mientras que para los anzuelos se pueden usar todos los hilos invisibles. Por lo demás, no

It’s a doddle; get hold of a really modern rig or leader, the ones that come with three double ball-swivel, or three micro-swivels, and set them up to mount three lines, along with their respective hooks. A length of around a metre is ideal, in this way you can lock in a ball-swivel at each end and have one in the middle, allowing you to have three lines with a length of up to around 45 centimetres, the perfect size for our plans.

As a sinker, and bearing in mind that you are going to be fishing at depths of 30/70 metres, you can use a jig of up to 120 grams, or even up to 150 if the current is strong. For the leader we recommend a slightly more rigid memory-free fluorocarbon line, while for the hooks you can use any invisible line. Now, with regard to the critical matter of baits and lures, you can by putting a piece of worm on the bottom hook, a piece of prawn on the middle hook, and a feather on the top hook... And depending on how things are going, whether or not you become aware of the presence of small carangidae or scombridae, whether they keep coming up mixed with spotted weevers, bream, groupers, common pandoras, etc. you’ll just have to decide... Should I keep on working in the same way, or select for the species that I want to land, depending on how long each one lasts, i.e. using three feathers or three natural baits, and always allowing the jig to act on its own account...

Haciendo las cosas bien y si la mar nos da su consentimiento, las probabilidades de lograr buenos resultados son bastante altas. Lo cierto es que cuando aparecen los pequeños carángidos, como por ejemplo los apreciados jureles, palometas, etc, o los escómbridos, entre los que destacamos a la melva, la caballa y el estornino, la diversión está asegurada, ya que forman grandes cardúmenes y cuando se localizan es fácil lograr buenas pescatas en muy poco tiempo.

Los peces suelen entrar de tres en tres, aunque muchos logran huir, pero si el aparejo está lejos es posible que vuelvan a entrar, si no, debemos conformarnos con una o dos capturas. Pero lo bonito es llegar abajo, al

emostremos que somos navegantes expertos, disciplinados, cumplidores de las normas más básicas y conocedores de lo esencial para amarrar bien y sin crear problemas, en especial, al marinero que nos asiste, atento y paciente.

Si amarramos en nuestra plaza, ya debemos conocer al dedillo la maniobra, las condiciones y las facilidades para atracar en ella. Y si es la primera vez, — ¡siempre hay una primera vez! — debemos estar muy atentos a las indicaciones que nos facilite por radio la capitanía del puerto a través del Canal 9 de VHF, que es el habitual en estas acciones.

Si es la primera vez, insistimos, se requiere una atención especial y una mirada previa al portulano, (la información también puede obtenerse de internet, en el pc o la tableta) o en cualquier otra publicación —mejor si es oficial— que nos proporcione las características y señalizaciones del puerto. Se puede dar el caso, que la señalización de las luces de entrada, o boyas, haya variado provisionalmente debido, por ejemplo, a un banco de arena reciente y que, antes de ser dragado, el puerto haya colocado una boya para que los barcos puedan evitar este bajo en la bocana.

Por lo tanto, primera consideración: ante la aproximación a puerto hay que tener la información cierta de las coordenadas, la posición de la bocana y su señalización, de día y de noche, ya que puede haber variado. El contacto previo por radio (Canal 9 u otro) es esencial porque el puerto nos dará la información necesaria y, a buen seguro, consejos adicionales.

If you are mooring at your own mooring place then you ought to know both the manoeuvre to be made and the facilities for docking there. And if it’s the first time, and there’s always a first time, then you will need to pay a great deal of attention to the indications you are given by the harbourmaster, over the radio, Chanel 9-VHF. And if it’s the first time, special attention is required and a prior look at any publication, better if it’s official, that will provide you with the characteristics and signalling at the Port. It could be the case that the light signalling, or the buoys, at the entrance to the port have been provisionally changed, or that, prior to dredging the channel the port has placed buoys to ensure that boats can avoid shallows at the entrance to the port.

And so, firstly: Before approaching the port you should dispose of reliable information regarding the coordinates, the entrance to the port and the signalling, both during the day and at night, as this may vary. Previous contact by radio (Channel 9 or others) is essential so that the port can provide you with the information you need and, for sure, any additional advice.

Una de las maniobras más delicadas es amarrar por popa. Partiendo del supuesto que nuestra hélice es dextrógira es preferible (si se puede) elegir un amarre que se encuentre a babor, según se entra a la zona de amarres. Avanzaremos a marcha lenta hasta sobrepasar en una eslora o más nuestro amarre. Paramos el barco. Con el timón a la vía damos atrás. Puesto que el efecto de la hélice hace que la popa del barco caiga a babor, solo es cuestión de “puntería” meter el barco directamente en su lugar.

Si el amarre se encuentra a estribor iniciaremos igual la maniobra, pasando de largo el puesto de amarre al menos una eslora, pero dejando más espacio en la banda de estribor para tener un amplio radio de giro. Dar un golpe de gas atrás con el timón a la vía. Poner punto muerto y girar el timón totalmente a estribor dejando que el barco se mueva por su propia inercia. Cuando el barco está encarado, timón a la vía. Un puntito avante basta para no golpear el pantalán por popa. Es cuestión de ir probando un día sin viento, con todas las defensas colocadas y algunos ayudantes en el muelle…

One of the trickiest manoeuvres is stern mooring. Assuming your propeller turns clockwise it is preferable (whenever possible) to ensure that the mooring is on your port side when you enter the mooring area. Move slowly until you have passed your mooring place by your boat’s length, or a little more and then bring her to a halt. Start reversing with the tiller straight, this is because the effect of the propeller turn will cause the stern of the boat to veer towards the port side, from this point on getting the boat to enter into its mooring is just a question of “aim”.

If the mooring is on the starboard side then you should start the manoeuvre in the same way, passing the mooring space by at least a boat’s length, but leaving more space on the starboard side, to allow for a wider turn radius. ¿DÓNDE AMARRO?

Before entering the port, second piece of advice: Be prepared when entering the port, with everything you’re going to need for the manoeuvring to hand, fenders and mooring ropes, and above all that boathook.

127 As we’ve said, the seaman is there to attend to you and to give you a helping hand, listen to him. Don’t try to be smarter than he is and follow his instructions. The sailor knows, better than anybody, the how, when and where of mooring, along with all of the whys.

If you are mooring at the waiting dock, then do it there, if you don’t want to take on fuel. If you do, you can always sort that out later.

And if it’s at a determined mooring, pay attention, and with the help of the radio you’ll get there, slowly and taking all of the necessary precautions. Doing whatever the seaman tells you to do.

You should be polite and friendly, and avoid complicating the situation by making any unexpected or unusual manoeuvres.

Third important point: Listen to the seaman and follow his instructions, he’s like an onshore pilot and will help you achieve problem free mooring.

Llegamos, de día y con buen tiempo, y sin viento, es fácil. De noche y con mal tiempo es más complicado.

Una vez tenemos clara la arribada hay que llegar preparados. Esto quiere decir que ya nos hemos puesto en contacto con el puerto y ya sabemos dónde vamos a marrar. Conocemos el plano del puerto pero… ¿Tenemos las defensas colgadas? ¿Por el lado adecuado, o por ambos lados? ¿Tenemos una defensa de mano por si acaso? ¿Las amarras correctamente preparadas, fijadas previamente en las cornamusas, con los cabos adujados, sin enredos y por debajo de los candeleros? ¿Sabemos cuántas necesitamos? ¿Tenemos el utilísimo bichero a mano? (hay que tenerlo siempre a mano).

Antes de entrar al puerto, segundo consejo: entremos preparados, con todo el montaje de la maniobra a punto, defensas y amarras y, sobre todo, el bichero.

Ya lo hemos dicho, el marinero está para atendernos y ayudarnos, hágale caso. No queramos ser más sabios que él y obedezcamos sus instrucciones. El marinero sabe mejor que nadie cómo, cuándo, dónde y todo el porqué del amarre.

Si es en el muelle de espera, pues ahí. Y no queramos ir a la gasolinera; o al revés. Luego ya lo arreglaremos. Y si es en una plaza determinada, pues atentos, y con el apoyo de la radio llegaremos, despacio y tomando todas las precauciones. Siguiendo al marinero y sus instrucciones.

Seamos corteses y amables, y no compliquemos la situación realizando maniobras extrañas.

Tercer punto importante: escuchemos y sigamos las indicaciones del marinero, él es como un práctico de tierra que nos ayudará a amarrar sin problemas.

Haremos la maniobra por estribor. Timón a estribor. Cuidado de que no haya barcos ni muelles a babor. Golpe de gas. La proa cae a estribor y la popa a babor. Sin tocar el timón, golpe de gas atrás. La popa cae a babor, pero el barco casi no se mueve de su lugar. Golpe de gas avante. En toda esta maniobra el barco va rotando sobre un imaginario eje vertical, sin mover demasiado su posición. Por supuesto, antes de maniobrar en el puerto realice pruebas en mar abierto…

Bringing a boat about with just one shaft is more complex than when there are two engines or transmissions, outboard or inboard. In this case you have to keep an eye on the movement of the stern and use that as your base. 1. ¿Tengo que contratar un seguro obligatoriamente?

Sí. El 16 de abril de 1999 se publicó el Real Decreto que obligaba a tener un seguro de responsabilidad civil por importe de 336.566,77 euros a todos los objetos flotantes destinados a la navegación de recreo y deportiva propulsados a motor, incluidas las motos náuticas, así como aquellos que carezcan de motor y tengan una eslora superior a seis metros.

13. Can this type of insurance be taken out for second hand boats or, for example, a boat that is only one year old?

Yes. Second hand boats can also take out an insurance that covers both Total Loss and Particular Average.

14. What types of deductible are there?

When a customer takes out an insurance that covers Particular Average this can be done either without any deductible or with a deductible. In the latter case you may choose from a range of different deductibles, which are usually based on the insurable value.

15. In what cases would I have no right to cover?

17. What damages might not be covered if I have made changes to the configuration of the boat?

Any accessories to the boat that are not listed in the policy will not be included under the cover.

18. ¿Cuánto cuesta un seguro?

La prima de un seguro variará en función del tipo de embarcación: (vela, motor, neumática, etc…), así como en función de su eslora y de la potencia del motor. También influirá en la prima las coberturas que se contraten, ya que no es lo mismo contratar un seguro básico que uno con daños propios.

19. ¿En qué riesgo incurro si navego sin seguro?

Ante todo no poder amarrar en puerto. Aunque puede parecer que en la mar no haya siniestros, la realidad es que nuestra embarcación puede causar daños a terceras personas o cosas y de no tener un seguro contratado los daños irán a cargo del propietario de la embarcación. Por ejemplo, en el caso de que nuestra embarcación provocara un incendio y quemara a más de un barco la cantidad a indemnizar sería considerable.

20. ¿Tengo que informar a la compañía aseguradora si participo en regatas?

El cliente deberá notificar a su compañía de seguros en el caso de que su embarcación participe en regatas, ya sean sociales, costeras o de altura para los veleros y concursos de pesca para las motoras, ya que normalmente estos eventos suelen tener un recargo sobre la prima del seguro.

18. How much does marine insurance cost?

The insurance premium will vary depending on the type of boat (sail, engine/motor, inflatable, etc.) and also on its length and the power of its engine or motor. The kind of cover that you take out will also have an influence, given that taking out a basic insurance is not the same as taking out an insurance that includes own damages.

19. What risks am I taking if I sail without insurance?

First of all you will not be allowed to moor at the port. While it may appear that at sea there are no losses the reality is that your boat can cause injuries or damages to third parties and/ or their belongings and, if you have not taken out insurance then those damages will have to be met by the boat’s owner, you. For example, should your boat provoke a fire and should that fire affect other boats then the total of the indemnity to be paid would be considerable.

20. Would I have to inform the insurance company if I take part in regattas?

Clients must notify the insurance company should it be the case that they are going to take part in a regatta with their boat, whether such be local, coastal or offshore for yachts, or even fishing competitions for motorboats, insofar as such events usually involve some kind of surcharge on the insurance premium.

La leyenda cuenta que la primera regata de La Ruta de La Sal se disputó en 1846. Fue de Formentera al pequeño puerto costero de El Garraf, se trataba de transportar sal hasta Barcelona para suplir su carencia. El ganador, el primero en cubrir las 168 millas desde las Pitiussas hasta la Ciudad Condal, sabía que cobraría el kilo de sal a precio de oro, mientras que los últimos recibirían muy poco a cambio de su mercancía. Since it was first held, back in 1989, the La Ruta de la Sal Race has written an important chapter in the history of cruising yachts in Spain, has seduced thousands of fans and has become a regatta that is, in many senses, unique.

As legend has it, the first La Ruta de la Sal Race took place in 1846, from Formentera to the small port of El Garraf, bring salt to Barcelona where it was scarce. The winner, the first to cover the distance of 168 sea miles, was to be paid the weight of their salt load in gold, while the rest would receive very little in exchange for their merchandise. 143 years later, in 1989, the Catalan sailor, Pepe Ferrés, rescued the idea with the aim of promoting offshore yacht sailing and organised the first La Ruta de la Sal Race. Port Ginesta es uno de los puertos de salida de La Ruta de la Sal, la regata de altura mediterránea por excelencia que reúne cada año a cientos de navegantes y este año celebra su 30 aniversario. Y no es casual, ya que la Marina de Port Ginesta reúne las condiciones que exige acoger un evento de estas características.

Port Ginesta is one of the starting points for the La Ruta de la Sal Race, the Mediterranean Offshore Race par excellence that every year brings together hundreds of seamen and this year is celebrating its 30th anniversary. And this is no accident, because the Port Ginesta Marina brings together all of the conditions that are required to play host to an event of these characteristics.

Potrus, seguida del jabeque Jerba y del bergantín Arrogante. 143 años después, en 1989, el navegante catalán Pepe Ferrés recuperó la idea y, con el objetivo de promocionar la navegación de altura, organizó la primera regata de La Ruta de La Sal. Un recorrido de 171 millas desde la costa barcelonesa y Formentera, en la que participaron 36 embarcaciones.

En 1990 se dobló la cifra con 65 inscritos y en 1991 se creó la Versión Este de la regata con salida simultánea desde Dènia. Entre las dos versiones aquel año navegaron 191 veleros. La Ruta de la Sal era ya la regata con más participantes de España. En 1997 la participación superó la barrera de las 200 embarcaciones. Y en la cita de 2001 se alcanzaba la cifra de 310. Todo un récord, aunque habría que esperar a 2004 para llegar a los 345 inscritos, cifra que la convirtió en la regata de altura con más participantes del Mediterráneo.

That year, in both versions, 191 yachts took part and the La Ruta de la Sal Race had become the regatta with most participants anywhere in Spanish waters. In 1997, for the first time, participation was over 200, while in 2001 it reached 310, an absolute record, although it wasn’t until 2004, with the registration of 345 entries, that the La Ruta de la Sal Race became the offshore yacht race with highest number of participants anywhere in the Mediterranean.

En estos 30 años de historia han navegado en La Ruta de la Sal 5.680 embarcaciones tripuladas por cerca de 37.500 regatistas y se han recorrido más de 8.000 millas en competición.

Y todo ello es patrimonio de la iniciativa del ya fallecido Pepe Farrés, alma de esta prueba y un navegante clave en el desarrollo e implantación de esta modalidad en España, un eslabón imprescindible en la historia de la vela de crucero española. Tanto es así que, en 2009, La Ruta —como es popularmente conocida— recibió el reconocimiento del RORC que la incluyó en su calendario internacional destacando su calidad técnica y el modelo deportivo de fomento de la participación iniciado por Pepe Farrés. Actualmente, para Port Ginesta La Ruta de la Sal es también un evento estratégico, no solo por los centenares de personas y barcos que ahí se reúnen cada año para emprender la singladura hacia Eivissa, sino por el reto que supone desde el punto de vista organizativo, técnico, de servicios y logístico, que pone a prueba la capacidad de la marina para dar satisfacción a los requerimientos de una flota tan numerosa que incluye una importante participación internacional de veleros franceses, ingleses, alemanes y holandeses, capitaneadas por patrones de estas nacionalidades en muchos casos residentes en El Garraf. Una prueba que cada año se supera con creces, que llena de ambiente marinero los pantalanes de Port Ginesta, y que crea unos vínculos permanentes entre los regatistas, el personal de la marina y las empresas que les prestan servicio.

And all of this is thanks to the now deceased Pepe Farrés, the veritable spirit of this regatta.

In 2015 the Government of the Balearic Islands awarded Pepe Farrés the Ramón Llull prize, and qualified La Ruta as a strategic event for the Pityusic Islands.

Currently, as far as Port Ginesta is concerned, the La Ruta de la Sal Race is also of tremendous strategic importance, due to the challenge that it represents, from the organisational, technical, services and logistics points of view; testing, as it does, the capacity of the marina to meet the needs of such a numerous fleet, which includes the participation of a great many international yachts, belonging to owners of many different nationalities, many of whom are resident in El Garraf. This is a regatta that just gets better every year, filling the jetties of Port Ginesta with a seafaring atmosphere and establishing permanent links between sailors and skippers, the personnel at the marina, and the companies that provide their services.

esde el viernes 21 hasta el sábado 23 de abril numerosas firmas del sector de la náutica y la vela, como North Sails, Stay Náutica, International, Ausmar o Tack Velas estuvieron exponiendo sus productos y servicios en la Esplanada de las Palmeras durante el Sailing Meeting, una feria en la que los visitantes pudieron adquirir accesorios, acastillaje, motores, velas o productos de seguridad, entre otros, así como ver de primera mano embarcaciones a vela nuevas y de ocasión, entre las que destacaron los nuevos modelos de Bénéteau de las gamas Sense y Oceanis. Destacó también el sector del chárter, con empresas como Nautal o Barcelona Charter, y los deportes emergentes y más accesibles como el surf, el SUP (Stand Up Paddle) o el Land Sailing, que estuvieron dando a conocer la Federació Catalana de Vela y Land Sailing BCN. Además de diversas conferencias sobre seguridad náutica y nuevas formas de energía aplicadas a la náutica, la feria contó con Didac Costa, que explicó su experiencia en la Vendée Globe.

Por otro lado, el Campeonato de Catalunya de Cruceros ORC – IV Trofeo Sailing Meeting, patrocinado por Fujifilm, Pantaenius y ADP, reunió este año a 30 embarcaciones. Rats on fire, Vertigo Dos y Tibere fueron los ganadores en las categorías ORC 0-1, ORC 2 y ORC 3-4 respectivmente.

From Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd April numerous nautical and sailing sector companies, such as North Sails, Stay Náutica, International, Ausmar or Tack Velas exhibited their products and services on the Esplanada de las Palmeras during the Sailing Meeting at Port Ginesta. It was a trade fair at which visitors could buy accessories, rigging, motors, sails and safety products, among others, while also having had the opportunity to take a good, first-hand look at a selection of new and second hand sailing boats, in particular the new Bénéteau models from their Sense and Oceanis ranges.

Also of great interest was the charter sector, with companies such as Nautal or Barcelona Charter, as well as the area of emerging and more accessible sports, such as surf, SUP (Stand Up Paddle) and Land Sailing, where the Catalan Sail and Land Sailing Federation BCN were being presented.

Apart from a range of different conferences on nautical safety and the nautical application of the new forms of energy, the Fair also counted on the presence of Didac Costa, who explained his experiences during the Vendée Globe.

On another note, the Catalonian Orc Cruising Championship – IV Trophy Sailing Meeting, sponsored by Fujifilm, Pantaenius and ADP, this year brought together 30 boats, with the winners being: Rats on Fire, Vertigo Dos and Tibere, respectively in the ORC 0-1, ORC 2 and ORC 3-4 categories.

Desde 1984 todo el equipo humano que forma Port Ginesta trabaja con la prioridad de atender de la mejor manera a nuestros clientes y usuarios.

Esta es la visión de lo que pasa un día cualquiera en la marina, hora a hora, minuto a minuto, todos los días del año.

In this article we present a view of what a normal day at the marina is like, hour by hour, minute by minute, all year round.

ort Ginesta, una moderna marina en el litoral del parque natural del Garraf con 15 hectáreas de tierra y 15 hectáreas de espejo de agua, alberga en su abierto y permeable recinto 1.442 puntos de amarre, con embarcaciones entre 4 y 30 metros, casi un centenar de empresas dedicadas al comercio, más de 30 empresas dedicadas a la industria náutica y más de 10 restaurantes, así como 80 camarotes (apartamentos) en el muelle central de la marina. Es, en realidad, un pequeño gran pueblo, con sus peculiaridades y necesidades.

Unos 35 profesionales nos dedicamos durante los 365 días del año las 24 horas del día a ofrecer el mejor y más completo servicio a nuestros clientes y usuarios.

Veamos cómo podría ser un día en esta pequeña “villa marinera” llamada Port Ginesta, cómo son sus 24 horas en el puerto deportivo más grande de España.

En Port Ginesta aún no ha salido el sol y los marineros de noche acaban su turno. Se realiza el cambio del cuerpo de guardia en la entrada del puerto. La guardia saliente da el relevo comunicando las novedades a la guardia entrante. Sin novedad.

Entra el equipo de limpieza del puerto. Dejará impecables todos los baños y duchas de la zona comercial del muelle de ribera, los de capitanía, los del contradique antiguo en el muelle central y los baños y duchas del muelle de poniente. Nuestros amarristas y clientes los encontrarán en perfecto estado para su buena ducha por la mañana.

Rompe el día y sale el sol. La guardia, aprovechando los incipientes rayos de luz, realiza el primer control de la flota del puerto, gracias al plano que les han dejado las compañeras de las oficinas de capitanía la noche anterior: barcos ausentes, barcos presentes, líneas de flotación, defensas, trenes de fondeo...

Empezamos el día controlando que todo esté correcto.

Entra el equipo de jardinería y limpieza general. Hoy podarán los setos de los camarotes y las palmeras del muelle de ribera, pero primero darán una vuelta por el puerto para realizar una batida de limpieza general a los viales.

Port Ginesta is a modern marina on the shores of the Garraf National Park that occupies a dry area of 15 hectares plus another 15 hectares of water. On its open and permeable site the Port offers 1,442 moorings, for boats ranging from 4 to 30 metres in length and plays host to almost a hundred different companies, engaged in a range of commercial activities, 30 working in the nautical field, plus more than 10 fully operating restaurants, along with 80 apartments (camarotes) located on the marina’s Central Quay. In reality it’s a great little village, with its own peculiarities and needs.

Some 35 professions dedicate our services, over 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, to offering the best and most complete service to our visitors and users So, let’s take a look at a typical day in Port Ginesta, this small “seafaring village”, and see what goes on over 24 hours in Spain’s largest marina.

05:50 - At Port Ginesta the sun has still not come up and the night shift are about to go off duty. The changing of the guard takes place at the mouth of the port, with the outgoing officers handing over and reporting to the new shift on anything important that may have happened since they went off duty. Today there’s nothing to report.

06:00 – The port cleaning team report for duty. Their first job is to ensure that all of the washrooms and showers in the commercial area of the Ribera Quay, in the harbourmaster’s office, on the old breakwater on the Central Quay, along with the washrooms and showers on the Poniente Quay, are impeccable, so that those with moorings in the port and all our visitors will find everything in perfect condition when they head off for their morning shower.

07:30 – Daybreak, the sun comes up. The officers take advantage of the first rays of the incipient sun to run their first check on the fleet moored in the port, using the plan left by their companions in the harbourmaster’s offices the night before: boats absent, boats present, flotation lines, fenders, mooring lines... We start the day by making sure that everything is shipshape and Bristol-fashion, as the English say.

Hoy la directora del puerto y el capitán tienen una primera reunión con los responsables de un astillero francés que quiere traer sus barcos a Port Ginesta antes de llevarlos a Mallorca.

Han llegado los auditores de AENOR y están con la coordinadora de medioambiente y de prevención de riesgos laborales, y con la coordinadora de calidad están terminando la auditoría de los certificados internacionales de Port Ginesta: ISO 14001, ISO 9001 y OSHAS 18001. Tres días de auditoría para poder seguir controlando y enarbolando estos pabellones de calidad de gestión.

Mediodía, tiempo soleado, las terrazas se llenan de clientes para el vermut, y los camareros empiezan a preparar las mesas para las comidas del día. Casi 2.000 tenedores tienen en Port Ginesta preparados los restaurantes para disfrutar.

11:00 – Today there is a regatta and the Port Bosun, along with the seamen, are making all of the necessary preparations to ensure that this third AEBEC classics regatta can take place from the Port. The field of buoys, regattas committee, the embarkation of the committee, flags, etc.

11:35 – The AENOR auditors arrive and are meeting with the environmental coordinators and the occupational risk prevention people, while the quality coordinator they are trying to complete the auditing of the Port Ginesta International Certificates: ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and OSHAS 18001. Three days of auditing so that we can maintain and continue to hoist these quality management flags.

El equipo de jardinería prepara todo el material para poder realizar mañana el tratamiento “endovenoso” a las palmeras del puerto con el fin de evitar la proliferación del escarabajo picudo rojo. ¡Llevamos más de cuatro años luchando contra él!

En el varadero un velero clásico se dispone a entrar en la cabina de pintura de atmósfera controlada para realizar los trabajos de pintura y acabados de alta calidad.

Se recibe un aviso solicitando auxilio por VHF. Una embarcación se ha quedado sin motor a dos cables de la verde del puerto. Coordinado por el contramaestre, las oficinas del puerto avisan a Salvamento Marítimo y nuestra embarcación portuaria, la María del Carmen, sale en auxilio de la embarcación a la deriva, por la peligrosa cercanía de esta a las piedras del dique de abrigo.

La embarcación portuaria ya tiene firme el remolque y entra en puerto con el barco averiado, no hay heridos y la embarcación se lleva a su amarre. Las compañeras de oficinas avisan a Salvamento Marítimo. ¡Todo ha salido bien!

14:00 – Another changeover, with the afternoon shift coming on and the customary hand over in the harbourmaster’s office, along with the passing on of any significant events. Again nothing to report, all quiet!

15:45 – The gardening team prepare everything they are going to need for the following morning, when they are going to apply the “intravenous” treatment on the port’s palm trees, with the aim of trying to avoid a proliferation of the red palm weevil that they’ve been suffering from.

We’ve been battling this plague for the last four years!

16:00 – On the slipway a classic yacht is getting ready to enter the controlled-atmosphere spray-painting booth, so that work can be done on her paintwork and high quality finishes.

17:30 – A request for help is received by VHF. An embarkation has lost its engine, just two cables away from the port. Coordinated by the Bosun, the port offices notify Spain’s Maritime Rescue Services and our port boat, the María del Carmen, sales out to provide assistance to the boat, which is drifting dangerously close to the rocks of the outer breakwater.

18:40 – The Port’s boat has now hooked up the tow and brings the boat with its broken down engine into port, noone’s been injured and the boat is taken to her mooring.

Tras cerrar las oficinas, las chicas de administración dejan en el parquin el plano con los barcos del puerto, para que la marinería pueda efectuar el control de la flota a la mañana siguiente.

Se inicia la recogida de residuos no peligrosos de los pantalanes.

La marinería, ayudada a veces por personal de control portuario, realiza esta labor durante todo el año. Vidrio, papel y cartón, plásticos y envases y residuos generales, son recogidos cada día por nuestra marinería, y segregados correctamente en contenedores de mayor envergadura. Esta labor en temporada alta puede llegar a ocupar 4 o 5 horas a nuestro personal.

Llega una embarcación desde Francia y pide un amarre para pasar unos días, nuestra marinería los atiende y se lo ofrece. Les entrega una llave de las duchas y les ayuda a conectar el agua y la electricidad. ¡Bienvenidos a Port Ginesta!

En una ronda de control, la marinería de guardia ha observado que hay un barco que parece que tiene la línea de flotación demasiado aproada, se teme por una posible vía de agua. Llama al contramaestre por teléfono para comentarle la situación. El contramaestre conoce el barco afectado y sabe que le han sacado los motores para reparar, por eso esta tan aproado. ¡Falsa alarma! Vaya susto…

La noche sigue tranquila, el personal del control de accesos toma un café con la marinería, la guardia de noche ya está terminando, los compañeros de relevo llegarán dentro de poco.

Un jardinero del puerto entra a trabajar, pues hoy debe avanzar trabajos de limpieza de la piscina de camarotes para no molestar a los usuarios de los apartamentos más tarde.

A punto de romper el día. Nuevo cambio de guardia, se comentan las novedades de la noche: el equipo de limpieza comienza a trabajar en las duchas y baños de capitanía, así cuando se levanten los amarristas estarán impecables.

Así puede ser un día entero en Port Ginesta. El puerto sigue trabajando, sigue y sigue, nunca para, 365 días 24 horas desde hace ya casi 30 años. Somos personas que atendemos a personas, somos una marina humana.

Glass, paper and cardboard, plastics and tetra bricks and general unclassified waste are collected every night and correctly separated into larger skips. In the high season this can take our personnel as long as 4 or 5 hours.

01:30 – A boat comes in from France looking for a berth for a few days; the Harbourmaster attends to them, yes he has one available. He hands over a key for the showers and helps them connect up to the water and electricity lines. Welcome to Port Ginesta!

03:20 – During a tour of the harbourmaster duty watch a boat is found that appears to have its waterline too bows on, it is feared that she may be taking on water. So, that’s what a complete day at Port Ginesta can be like. The Port keeps on working, on and on. It never stops, 365 days a year 24 hours a day… It’s been almost 30 years now. We are the people who look after the people, a very human marina.

Port Ginesta is the seat of the Nuva Yachts’ boatyard, a young company that builds the only boat manufactured in Spain that can navigate under sail and serve as a powerboat: the Nuva MS6.

a empresa, dirigida por el emprendedor Andrés Cárdenas, nació para construir este modelo, cuyo primer prototipo fue presentado en 2016 evolucionando desde entonces tanto en términos de diseño como en tecnología de construcción, ya que en la actualidad el Nuva MS6 se construye mediante la técnica de infusión de resina al vacío, una tecnología puntera.

El Nuva MS6 es un Motor Sailer cabinado para disfrutar sin prisas de la navegación a vela y volver puntual y rápidamente a puerto gracias al motor. Dispone de una cabina con wc químico lo que permite pasar incluso la noche a bordo. Con una eslora de 5,99 metros (no paga impuesto de matriculación) y una manga de 2,48 metros, presenta dos particularidades que lo hacen totalmente singular: por una parte, su capacidad de navegar a vela y a motor, lo que consigue gracias al palo abatible y a la quilla con bulbo 100% retráctil, que se baja navegando a vela y se sube navegando a motor, y por otra, gracias a la capacidad de modificar 78

El barco, diseño de BYD (Barcelona Yacht Design) pesa 1.350 kilos, lo que permite su fácil transporte por carretera, es insumergible y su calado a motor, con la quilla levantada, es de 0,45 metros mientras que con la quilla abajo es de 1,25 metros. Navegando a vela dispone de una mayor trapezoidal de 16,8 metros cuadrados y de un pequeño foque, aunque opcionalmente podría izar un gennaquer de 14,3 metros cuadrados. A motor, la potencia recomendada es de 70 Hp fueraborda, que le permite alcanzar una velocidad de crucero de 12-13 nudos de crucero y más de 15 nudos de máxima.

En su versión estándar el precio es de 36.325 euros más IVA, mientras que a la versión con bañera extensible hay que sumarle 12.000 euros.
