Beach Safety & Info Sugar White Sands Why is the sand on Navarre Beach and across the Emerald Coast so white that it looks like grains of sugar? This quartz-rich sand actually washed down from the Appalachian Mountains by way of the Apalachicola River, where it entered the Gulf of Mexico and eventually made its way onto our shores. This sand is pure, white quartz crystals ground into perfect granules, leaving the sand powdery soft, even squeaking under your toes!

We hope you will love our beaches as much as we do. And please remember to leave only your footprints behind so others can enjoy it as well.

Santa Rosa County Beach Ordinances According to Santa Rosa County ordinances, the following rules apply to Navarre Beach: Remove all items used for swimming, sunbathing or recreation two hours after dusk, and keep them off the beach until two hours after sunrise. ✓ No camping. ✓ No firearms. ✓ No glass containers. ✓ No alcoholic beverages. ✓ Remove trash. ✓ No pets. ✓ No abusive, threatening, indecent or disorderly conduct. ✓ No campfires. ✓ Do not destroy sea oats. ✓ Stay off the dunes. ✓ No fireworks. ✓ Do not disturb other visitors with radios, TVs, musical instruments or other noise-producing devices. ✓ No public address systems. ✓ No nudity. ✓ No vehicles on the beach. ✓ No watercrafts, surfboards and similar objects within the public swimming area. ✓ No fishing within the public swimming area.

And, it is always a good idea to wear sunscreen or protect your skin with clothing.

Rip currents The United States Lifesaving Association estimates that the annual number of deaths due to rip currents on our nation’s beaches exceeds 100. Rip currents account for more than 80 percent of rescues performed by beach lifeguards. These statistics can be reduced by following a few simple guidelines when the surf is rough at local beaches. The greatest safety measures you can take to avoid the dangers of a rip current are to swim near a lifeguard, recognize dangerous surf conditions and be aware of the dangers of rip currents. Storms have changed the shoreline and near-shore sandbars along our beaches, and the frequency of rip currents has increased. A rip current is a turbulent, fast-flowing current that can carry a swimmer away from shore very quickly.

Rip currents are formed when water rushes out to sea in a narrow path (like a break in the near-shore sandbar or from an obstruction of the current caused by a jetty or other type of barrier). Rip currents can last for a few hours or may be permanent; they usually exist during rough surf and after storms.

Some signs of rip currents include: ✓ A difference in water color. The water may be murkier from increased sediments or appear darker because it is deeper. ✓ The waves may appear to be larger and choppier.

✓ Foam or objects are carried directly out to sea, or debris or vegetation may appear perpendicular to the shore at the site of a rip current. ✓ As the water rushes out to sea, a bowl-like indentation may be apparent on the shore. ✓ Rip currents are usually present if the surf is very rough.

Remember, always use common sense and swim responsibly. ✓ If you are caught in a rip current, don’t panic or try to swim against the current. Swim parallel to shore until you are out of the current. Rip currents are rarely more than 30-feet wide. If you can’t break out of the current, float

calmly until it dissipates, usually just beyond the breakers. Then swim diagonally to shore. If you don’t know how to swim, stay out of the water! ✓ Swim near a lifeguard. ✓ Supervise children when in or near the water. ✓ Respect the beach and water environment; know the water conditions. ✓ Know your swimming abilities and limits. ✓ Swim in groups. ✓ Be aware of weather conditions; get out of the water and away from the beach during storms. ✓ Stay calm in the event of an emergency. ✓ Pay attention to beach warning flags and lifeguards. A RED flag means the surf is dangerous: stay out of the water; a YELLOW flag means use caution when entering the Gulf; a GREEN flag indicates waters are calm. A PURPLE flag means dangerous marine life may be present.

DOUBLE RED flags mean the water is closed to the public.

Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary If you are in search of some below-the-surface excitement, you no longer need to travel to Pensacola to get your sub-surface fix.

A view from below the surface: Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary a haven for marine life, sightseers Beachgoers can now enjoy the tantalizing turquoise water from above and below while in Navarre Beach at an attraction that’s good for the environment and the economy.

Underwater and just off the coastline, the Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary has things going … and growing. The plant and animal life is growing as you read this, attracting fascinating fish and colorful marine life to Navarre Beach.

Already an amazing location for coastal bird and wildlife enthusiasts, the artificial reefs just off the coast of Navarre Beach are now poised to become grand central station for snorkeling, scuba diving and various other beachside and aquatic recreation.

After more than 10 years of planning and development, three artificial reefs were carefully installed off the coast of Navarre Beach in 2012, in both the Santa Rosa Sound as well as on the Gulf side. Since then, the reefs have flourished.

“We had more sand deposited out here, which is a natural thing. The sand naturally shifts and we lucked out and got additional sand that we had lost in previous storms,” Mike Sandler, a member of the Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary committee, said.

For reef goers that equates to a longer sandbar and a more shallow trek to the Gulf reef, which sits just about 300 feet from the shore. The sand has also deposited in the reef, furthering its progress as well.

“The growth continues and more plant life and crustaceans are growing on top of the reefs on top of each other. Because of that, then more of the animal life comes to feed because it’s an easy source,” Sandler said.

One reef is located in the Gulf of Mexico allowing for deep diving as well as snorkeling for the novices.

The Gulf reef is about 2,000 feet east of the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier or about 400 feet from the shoreline near lifeguard tower No. 1. The reef site is designated by large, white poles with red and green markers.

The deeper water of the Gulf provides a much wider variety of sea life and vegetation. The reefs offer a colorful kaleidoscope for viewing and attract marine life that you could be lucky enough to spot such as sea turtles, octopi and juvenile and adult fish like cobia, grouper, king mackerel and red fish. Other interesting underwater inhabitants call the reef home or make frequent visits to the growing structure.

The Gulf reefs are 15-20 feet below the surface.

Green flag days offer the perfect opportunity for even inexperienced snorkelers to easily access the reef. On clear days, paddle boarders and kayakers can view the reefs from their unique vantage point. In other words, you’ll be able to fit in those deep dives and still have time to spend another day in beautiful Navarre getting your land-legs back before returning home.

There are also two reefs located on the north side of the county park in the Sana Rosa Sound. The calmer waters of the Intracoastal Waterway allow younger snorkelers an opportunity to swim among the varied

species that reside in the brackish water, with the assurance that they are the largest species in the water.

Oysters, the sound’s natural filtering mollusks, sustain other marine life such as shrimp, crab, sea trout and red trout that the youngsters might catch sight of as well.

An added bonus for divers and snorkelers is the opportunity to spot the Florida sea cow — better known as the Manatee — in both the Gulf and the sound.

Also of interest to snorkelers is the Adopt-a-Reef-Tree program. Since the artificial reef is in its infant stages, people have the opportunity to “sponsor” part of the reef and then return in subsequent years to witness the miracle of coral growth and the marine life that it attracts.

The marine sanctuary is an effort to shine the spotlight on the natural beauty of the area, rather than construct more buildings and attractions. Navarre Beach has always been a place of peace, relaxation and recreation rather than amusement parks and commercial developments – and local officials recognize that as something to which both visitors and local residents alike are attracted.

“Navarre (is) interested in options that are more eco-friendly,” said Nancy Sandler, chairperson of the Marine Sanctuary Committee. “We have beautiful beaches and we don’t want too much commercial activity out there when we have something natural that people can enjoy.”

The Gulf side reef has also been approved for expansion. Funding has been granted to add 30 structures to each side of the reef, which will triple the reef’s size. Additionally, the temporary markers that currently guide visitors to the reef are scheduled to be upgraded to permanent markers soon.

The Navarre Beach County Park is open from 7:30 a.m. to sunset.

Navarre Beach Sea Turtle ConservAtory Flippin’ out: Sea turtle conservatory adds to Navarre Beach’s impact on visitors As you drive into Navarre Beach Marine Park, you are greeted by a colorful, eye-catching mural of sea turtles. The mural serves not only to beautify the entrance to the park, but also to identify the location of the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservatory. Completed by local artist Chuck Chunn on a voluntary basis, the mural also embodies the spirit of the center, which is fully staffed by volunteers who are passionate about the cause.

Spreading awareness and helping turtles with life threatening injuries is the focus of the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center, which is set to fully open later in the summer. All seven types of sea turtles are endangered and four of them frequent the Navarre Beach area. Visitors can take a break from the sun for a bit to enjoy educational and entertaining programs at the facility or even to do some local shopping.

The gift shop, affectionately called the Seamore Store, is already up and running for visitors to come and browse. The store features beautiful art work and jewelry created by local artists along with gifts for children and literature about sea turtles. Also, inside the center are activities for visitors, especially younger ones, to enjoy including a very realistic nesting bay and life-size art of four types of sea turtles that will allow you to see how you compare in size.

Perhaps the most exciting new development is construction of a pool that is16 feet by 24 feet and 4 feet deep.

The pool has project director Cathy Holmes dreaming big for both turtles and their human visitors. The pool will have a loggerhead turtle that will be a permanent resident of the facility and will also feature native fish such as spadefish, sheepshead, ladyfish and sea rays. Stadium seating for 30 that

is protected from the sun will surround the west side of the pool for visitors to sit back and relax while watching the sea creatures in the pool. The entire facility, including the pool area, will be compliant with the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) with room to maneuver necessary aids and strollers.

The conservation center, which is looking forward to a full opening sometime near the end of the summer, will serve turtles that have been injured by boats or fishing lines, or turtles that have respiratory illnesses, are cold-stunned or have suffered any other injury and illness that prevents them from surviving in the wild, according to Holmes. The center runs as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) with a specific mission of conservation and protection of threatened and endangered sea turtles through community education programs and partnered research.

Visitors might see these volunteers at work at the center as they pass by to reach Navarre’s beaches. They might also see them patrolling in the morning as part of the hard working Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Patrol.

“It’s neat that we’re not even up-and-running yet, but the word is already spreading,” said Holmes, who is known locally as the Turtle Lady.

Holmes has worked in wildlife rehabilitation for about 25 years and organizes the “turtle patrol” that walks the area beaches daily during the nesting season.

“I’m crazy about all animals, but the sea turtles are just cool,” said Holmes. “They’re unbelievable creatures. (I love) Seeing the nests and the hatchlings, and how they defy the odds to become adults.”

Just as those hatchlings defy the odds to become adults, Holmes is confident that the conservation center will be added to the long list of exciting attractions on Navarre Beach – one that will offer something for visitors with flippers and hands.

Navarre Beach Marine Science Station

Science station offers visitors the chance to get their hands dirty and feet wet Just like the busy marine life activity that takes place under the sea, the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station is teaming with a myriad of programs aimed to promote the appreciation, conservation, and understanding of the marine ecosystem of coastal Florida.

Programs like Saturdays-by-the Sea, fishing and sea safari camps, sleepovers, kayaking trips and other hands-on activities allow visitors the chance to really get to know the nearby waters. To accompany the long list of programs available to local residents and visitors, the center sponsors events throughout the year such as Autism OdysSea, Sea Spooktacular and Merry Fishmas. The center is also open Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Visitors will learn about marine debris, the water cycle, sharks and the deep sea.

Visitors can also enjoy touch tanks, aquariums, create shark necklaces and more. The center is free to visit, though donations are welcomed.

In addition, funding has recently been approved for an underwater live feed web camera for the Gulf side reefs. The camera will be one of only eight in the world and will allow for a virtual scuba diving experience, viewable online and from the science station.

The center also serves as a classroom for local high school students enrolled in Marine Biology and Oceanography as part of a dual enrollment program with Pensacola State College. A recent addition to the station, dubbed the Outreach Octobus, will allow teaching programs to reach the long list of those who otherwise would not be able to visit.

The Navarre Beach Marine Science Station was created in 2009 after Charlene Mauro’s marine science students held a town hall meeting and presented their idea of converting the empty ranger station into an environmental center to the county commissioners and the school board. Today, the science station hosts more than 4,000 students and community members each year, teaching them about the local marine environments.

Mauro, who is now the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station director, recently requested grants from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and BP Oil Spill RESTORE funds to pay for an expansion — which will improve both the facility and the programs. The goal is to build a two-story, 6,000-square-foot building that will house classrooms, a wet lab, marine life exhibits, a conference area

and an interpretative center. Outdoor classrooms are also in the works to draw even more visitors to the site. The new Gulf Coast Discovery Center will sit adjacent to the existing Marine Science Station.

Mauro has diligently worked to garner support from local entities, such as the school board, the Santa Rosa County Commission and the Tourist Development Council (TDC).

“The bottom line for the science station is we definitely want to expand the programs and staff, and the best way to do that is to expand the station,” Mauro said at a recent TDC meeting.

Mauro stated she has received requests from the University of West Florida to collaborate on research projects, but the science station is limited in space and equipment. So, the expansion would serve educational and research programs just as much as it would provide public activities and programs.

The Santa Rosa Board of County Commissioners is also onboard with the expansion, and has approved the addition of the outdoor classroom/pavilion and visitor’s center to the science station. Mauro is currently meeting with a LEAD certified architect to develop the blueprints for the building.

Soon, she hopes those plans will move from paper to reality, and thus offering yet another way that Navarre Beach is proving to be a gem along the Emerald Coast for residents, visitors and the science community.

Activities for Children Navarre Park Navarre Park is located on U.S. Highway 98 along the Santa Rosa Sound adjacent to the Butterfly House. Features such as a playground with a tot lot, duck pond, boardwalk, fishing pier and a splash pad to cool off on hot summer days make this a favorite with children. Pack a picnic and plan on spending the evening with weekly concerts from May to September.

Panhandle Butterfly House Wander through this educational and interactive exhibit and learn about the butterfly life cycle and view the butterfly nursery. Free of charge and open to the public Thursday-Saturday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Big Kahuna’s Water Adventure Park Located in the heart of Destin on U.S. Highway 98, Big Kahuna’s Water Park offers more than 40 water attractions and an adventure park. Guests can even enjoy mini-golf and a super-speed raceway.

Sam’s Fun and Surf City Sam’s Fun and Surf City offers year-around entertainment for the entire family.

Located south of Interstate 10 on Highway 29, Sam’s Fun City offers four large tube slides, including the largest slide on the Gulf Coast, “The Shark Attack,” two body slides and six child slides, more than 750 feet of lazy river and three activity pools. Sam’s is usually the first water park to open for the season. Fun City is open seven days a week.

Sam’s also has late night swimming and fireworks extravaganzas every Friday night. Other attractions include beach volleyball, an arcade, laser tag, go carts and a restaurant. Fun City has free parking and annual passes are available.

West Florida Railroad Museum/Milton Train Depot The Restored Train Depot and Museum houses a wide variety of memorabilia from the L&N, Frisco and other railroads. Children will enjoy the opportunity to explore several train car displays, outbuildings and the G scale garden railroad.

Navarre Beach Marine Science Station Provides hands-on marine science opportunities that encourage a deeper understanding of our coasts and ocean for students. They seek to stimulate student interest in science and teach the importance of caring for the marine environment. The 2014 Science by the Sea Summer Day Camps will be held June 23 - 27, July 14 - 18 and August 4 - 8.

The camps are designed to allow children to grow up learning about the Gulf of Mexico’s marine science and coastal ecology while nurturing the curiosity and stewardship potential in each child. Activities include: exploring what lives underneath the sand, learning to kayak, seining, dissecting squid, learning about sharks, fishing, building sand sculptures, making crafts, snorkeling, touching live animals and more. Heritage Park and Cultural Center Heritage Park & Cultural Center includes the Indian Temple Mound Museum, Camp Walton Schoolhouse Museum, Garnier Post Office Museum, Fort Walton Temple Mound and the Civil War Exhibit building. The museum houses interpretative exhibits depicting 12,000 years of Native American occupation, as well as the finest collection of Fort Walton Period ceramics in the Southeastern United States. Local History

Fort Pickens Fort Pickens is the largest of four forts built to defend Pensacola Bay, Florida and its Navy yard. Construction on the fort began in 1829 and was completed five years later in 1834. Fort Pickens enjoyed a long life of active duty, as it was used until the 1940s. Historic Fort Pickens and its Visitor Center is open from 9:30 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. March through October.

Naval Air Station Pensacola Naval Air Station Pensacola is known as the “Cradle of Naval Aviation” and features the National Aviation Museum and IMAX, a lighthouse and Fort Barrancas, built by the Spanish in 1797. Hours: Museum: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Pensacola Museum of Art The museum, housed in the Old City Jail, features works predominantly from the 20th and 21st centuries. T.T. Wentworth Jr. Florida State Museum and Historic Pensacola Village The T.T. Wentworth, Jr. museum, housed in the 1908 City Hall building, exhibits a treasure trove of historic artifacts, Americana and West Florida history. Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m.

Historic Pensacola Village – Visitors touring the village will enjoy the 1832 Old Christ Church, 1805 French-Creole Lavalle House, 1890s Lear-Rocheblave House and more. Indian Temple Mound Museum In 1962, the Indian Temple Mound Museum opened as the first municipally owned and operated museum in Florida. Over 1,000 artifacts of stone, bone, clay and shell are housed there, as well as one of the finest collections of prehistoric ceramics in the Southeast. Local Events Blue Angel Autograph Signing During the 2014 season, the Blue Angels will perform practice air shows over Naval Air Station Pensacola most Tuesday and Wednesdays at 11 a.m. They will answer questions and sign autographs at the National Museum of Naval Aviation at NAS Pensacola the following dates* June 11 and June 25, Aug. 7, Oct. 15, 22 and 29. *Note the autograph signing schedule is subject to change without notice.

Local Fishing/Pier Outdoors enthusiasts – and anglers in particular - will love the Navarre area of the Emerald Coast, which is home to some of the best saltwater fishing in the state of Florida.

If you like being outdoors in general and fishing in particular, the Navarre area of the Emerald Coast is the place for you.

We have some of the best saltwater fishing in the state, and it is out there waiting for you to enjoy.

Fishing inshore, utilizing the Santa Rosa Sound as well as the Escambia, East and Choctawhatchee Bays, you will find speckled trout, white trout, sheepshead, redfish, gray snapper and flounder waiting to grab your bait.

Do you enjoy relaxing on the Gulf beaches in your chair with your fishing rods staked out in the sand? You will find Florida pompano, redfish, whiting, bluefish and ladyfish and beautiful, clean water in abundance.

Move out onto one of the local fishing piers, and you can add king and Spanish mackerel, cobia, hardtail jacks (blue runners) and jack crevalle to your catch.

If inshore trolling is your game, then pulling your baits in

the Gulf waters will allow you to encounter bonita (little tunny), Spanish and king mackerel, cobia, barracuda, blackfin tuna and mahi-mahi.

Six- to eight-hour fishing trips offshore is where the action really heats up. Red snapper, vermilion snapper (locally called “mingoes”), gray triggerfish, amberjack, white snapper (red porgies), lane snapper and three species of grouper (red, gag and scamp) will not only ensure great fishing action, but also provide you with fine meals afterward.

Making trips longer than eight hours offshore will take you out to where the big amberjack, snapper and grouper live, as well as yellowfin tuna and an assortment of billfish.

Wetting a line at the closest shore to spending a night out on the Gulf, the Emerald Coast can provide you with all the fishing challenge and excitement you desire.

Navarre Beach Fishing Pier Since its Memorial Day 2010 completion, the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier has been celebrated as the longest fishing pier extending into the Gulf of Mexico. The pier features concrete piles and an octagonal-end design with a surface area of approximately 3,800 square feet. The pier was constructed using more than 370 breakaway wood panels, which would detach during heavy wave action and help preserve the integrity of the structure, reducing possible storm repair costs. With a surface area exceeding 32,000 square feet, the pier offers fisherman ample space to angle 30 feet above sea-level.

The Pier’s deck was renovated in 2014 and provides more space to enjoy with family and friends. Inside the pier store, fishermen can find the odds and ends they may have left behind, as well as souvenirs, food and drinks. There is also occasionally live music during the summer, but regardless, the pier provides views of the Gulf and all its wildlife like nowhere else.

WildlifE Sea Life The sugary-white sands of local beaches along the Gulf of Mexico attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area. It is important for local residents and tourists alike to understand water conditions, flag warnings and safety tips. The Gulf of Mexico is home to a diverse array of marine life that must be respected. Most are harmless, but there are a few species for which you should pay particular attention. Public beaches in Florida use flags to warn visitors of hazardous water conditions and potentially dangerous marine life. Red flags mean the water is dangerous and the purple flag will be flown if there is dangerous marine life in the area. Jelly fish tend to be the most common hazard in Emerald Coast waters.

Green sea turtles Green sea turtles are the largest of all hard-shell sea turtles, and we are fortunate to share our beaches with nesting females. Each year, locals wait with anticipation for the hatchlings to dig out of the nest and make their way to the water. The female sea turtle will choose a location for her nest on the beach and dig with her hind flippers.

One female sea turtle can lay between 60 and 160 eggs in her nest, and then will cover them with sand. The eggs take approximately 60 days to hatch, at which time the babies dig out of the nest to find the water. We take many precautions to protect the hatchlings.

With a few simple steps, everyone can help our beach’s turtles. ✔ Remove beach furniture nightly. If it cannot be removed each night, it should be stacked with the shortest edge facing the shoreline. ✔ During nesting season, avoid using umbrellas which have poles buried in the sand. ✔ Fill large holes left on the beach. ✔ Remove plastic bags from the beach.

Jellyfish are a staple in a sea turtle’s diet, and plastic bags look like “lunch” to a turtle in the water. ✔ Dispose of excess fishing lines or hooks. ✔ Turn off any lights when not needed, as the hatchlings will go toward light in search of water. ✔ Close curtains and blinds during nesting season. ✔ Keep pets off the beach.

Jellies We have a number of types of jellyfish, or “jellies,” that can be found along Navarre Beach throughout the year.

Most have nematocysts, or stinging cells, along the tentacles, although some jellies are harmless. The best thing to do is to be aware of your surroundings.

If you see jellies, get out of the water and check with the lifeguards to determine if they are the stinging variety.

When the stinging cells hit the body, they can leave a red rash. Most jellyfish stings will subside in a short time, but if you have persistent pain, trouble breathing or are sensitive to stings, seek medical attention.

What to do if you are stung by jellyfish ✔ Rub sand on the injury. This will help to remove the stinging cells and allow for relief. ✔ Pour vinegar on the sting site. This will break down the cells. Repeat as needed. ✔ There are a number of commercial products available at local drug stores to help reduce the pain of a sting.

Stingrays Stingrays are in the shark family and, although not usually aggressive, many species have a sharp, serrated barb at the base of the tail. Stingrays seem to cruise gracefully through the water.

However, they feed in the sand and can be found buried in sandy areas, which makes them hard to see and that can cause problems for beachgoers.

Swimmers can step on the stingray and often get hit with the barb as the animal swims away. The best way to protect swimmers from this accident is to do what is known as the “stingray shuffle.”

While walking along in the water, shuffle your feet along the sand. This will frighten the stingray away before you have a chance to step on the fish.

A sting by the stingray barb is very painful, and the pain may last for a few hours.

If you are stung by a stingray ✔ The barb transmits a protein-based venom. This venom causes extreme pain for the first 30-90 minutes and will begin to subside after that. There may be a cut at the sting site. The site may bleed and swell. If you are stung on the hand, remove any rings you have on fingers. ✔ If you experience any nausea, vomiting, muscle cramping or chills, go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

This could be a sign of an allergic reaction or an overdose of venom. ✔ Soak the affected area in the hottest water tolerable for at least an hour. This will break down the proteins, the venom will have less effect and the hot water will help reduce pain. The venom may gel or become jelly-like and ooze from the open wound – this is OK, and is actually desired. ✔ Wrap the wound in a makeshift bandage (any available clean, lint-free cloth soaked in hot water) once the wound has stopped oozing. ✔ Use a topical antibiotic to reduce the chance of infection and relieve pain. If the wound site shows any signs of infection, such as redness, prolonged swelling or pus, seek medical attention immediately. Untreated infections can result in loss of limbs or, in rare cases, death. ✔ If you are unsure about the reaction, seek medical attention.

Sharks First and foremost, fret not — the chance of a shark encounter along the Emerald Coast of Florida is very rare.

You actually have a greater chance of getting struck by lightning. Sharks eat fish and other marine life, not people.

When swimming, it is important to remember that the Gulf is a wilderness, not a swimming pool. Use common sense when enjoying this vast body of water.

There are precautions you can take to avoid a shark encounter: ✔ Avoid swimming in areas where people are fishing. ✔ Don’t swim in murky waters or between dusk and dawn (sharks feed during these times and might not see as well in murky waters). ✔ Don’t swim if you are bleeding or have open wounds. ✔ Don’t swim while wearing shiny jewelry (the reflection looks like fish scales). ✔ Refrain from excess splashing, and do not allow pets in the water because of their erratic movements. ✔ Exercise caution when occupying the area between sandbars or near steep drop-offs, which are favored hangouts for sharks. ✔ Swim in groups or with a buddy. ✔ Do not enter the water if sharks are known to be present, and get out of the water if a shark is spotted. Do not harass a shark if you see one.

Gulls Graceful and acrobatic, gulls are hardly cautious around humans. They will not hesitate to swoop down and take food right out of your hand. You can find these beautiful seabirds on any beach or bay shoreline, or in and around mangrove trees, seawalls and piers.

Laughing gulls are so named because their call sounds like a laugh, and can be easily identified by their black head and red bill.

Herring gulls are much larger and have a white head.

The small ring-billed gull has a black ring around its yellow bill.

They all tend to intermingle. Enjoy watching gulls, but please don't feed them. Keep in mind that while it is fun, it makes them aggressive and dependent upon humans for food.

Terns Terns look a lot like gulls in that they are gray above and white below. However, they are a separate species. They have a lighter, more buoyant flight, with sleeker, narrower bodies and wings, forked tails and very sharp beaks. Terns will hover briefly over the water, 10 – 30 feet in the air, and then dive gracefully to catch fish. The largest terns are the Royal tern, with an orange bill. The Caspian tern features a blood-red bill.

The smallest tern is aptly named the Least tern. It has a yellow bill, black cap and white forehead. In between is the Common tern, which dons a black cap and orange-red bill.

Black Skimmers and Terns Birds will begin nesting in April or May and usually finish in August. Black skimmers and terns will make their nests along the causeway. Do not disturb any nests you find. These birds will become

very territorial if their nests or their chicks are disturbed. Terns will dive-bomb toward anything they perceive to be a threat. So, avoid walking on designated nesting areas.

Also, obey the speed limit along the causeway to lessen the chance that you may kill a bird or chick.

Sanderlings, Dowitchers and Willets Sanderlings, dowitchers and willets are shorebirds. Find them on the beach near the water's edge, looking for food by probing the wet sand with their bills.

When humans approach, shorebirds will often run away rather than take flight.

At slightly more than six inches in length, one of the smallest shorebirds is the sanderling. A black bill, jet-black eyes and speedy, black legs give them away. You'll see them, usually in groups of a dozen or fewer, scurrying on tiny legs ahead of surging waves.

Dowitchers also frequent the shoreline, but are larger and run less than sanderlings.

They have a long, thin bill and are usually gray or light brown in color, depending on the time of year. You’ll see them in flocks of 100 or more, at times. One of the larger shorebirds is the willet. With a relatively long bill, long legs and gray body, a willet is fairly easy to pick out, especially when mingling with sanderlings and dowitchers. You’ll see willets in small flocks, alone or in pairs.

Herons and Egrets These long-legged wonders are a local favorite. Herons and egrets gather near water anywhere in Florida.

Hummingbird migration Each year, hummingbirds return to northwest Florida around mid-March and stay until October, although some have been known to stay here year- round. Most commonly spotted here are the Ruby-throated hummingbirds.

They are attracted by bright splashes of color and the perfect feed for them consists of a mixture of one part sugar to four parts water. Simply hang a feeder, be patient and enjoy your little visitors.

Monarch butterfly The majestic Monarch butterflies begin their migration to Mexico in October.

Believe it or not, northwest Florida (and, more specifically, the Panhandle Butterfly House in Navarre) is a popular retreat for those migrating. The butterflies get needed nourishment in the butterfly garden before continuing their journey.

These butterflies are the most widely recognized primarily because of their colors and size. It is the only butterfly that migrates south in the fall and then north again in the spring.

Military Presence Hurlburt Field is home to the Air Force Special Operations Command.

The 1st Special Operations Wing has a long, distinctive history. Hurlburt Field was originally designated as Auxiliary Field No. 9, one of the original small pilot and gunnery training fields built on the sprawling Eglin Air Force Base complex in the 1940s. The 1st SOW was redesignated the 16th SOW on Oct. 1, 1993 by Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Merrill A. McPeak, as part of Air Force-wide unit renumbering. The mission of the 16th SOW continued to provide a rapid reaction force for global special operations and to train aircrews to instruct and assist allied forces in all phases of special air operations.

On Nov.16, 2006, the Air Force re-designated the 16th SOW back to the 1st SOW. Hurlburt Field is proud of its history and it stands ready to perform its unique mission "Any Time, Any Place." Eglin Air Force Base is located southwest of Valparaiso, Fla., and covers 463,128 acres. Eglin AFB was established in 1935 as the Valparaiso Bombing and Gunnery Base. It is named in honor of Lieutenant Colonel Fredrick I. Eglin (1891–1937), who was killed in a crash of his Northrop A-17 pursuit aircraft on a flight from Langley to Maxwell Field, Ala.. Eglin is the home of the Air Armament Center (AAC) and is one of three product centers in the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC). Serving as the focal point for all Air Force armaments, the AAC is the center responsible for the development, acquisition, testing, deployment and sustainment of all air-delivered weapons.

The 33rd Fighter Wing "Nomads," an associate unit at Eglin Air Force Base, was re-designated under Air Education and Training Command on Oct. 1, 2009. As the first of its kind in the Department of Defense, the joint wing is responsible for F-35 A/B/C (Joint Strike Fighter) pilot and maintainer training for the Marine Corps, the Navy, the Air Force and, in the future, at least eight coalition partners. Initially, 59 aircraft and three flying squadrons, one for each service/aircraft variant, will be established at Eglin.

The area is also home to soldiers from the Army 7th Special Forces Group. The Air-Force owned, Army occupied land just north of Eglin, and west of Duke Field, sports 500 acres of land, most of which has been under construction since 2008 with current plans to be under construction until 2016. The facility officially opened its gates on May 2, 2011, and is home to more than 2,200 active duty soldiers and 3,000 dependent spouses and children. The 7th SFG has nearly 500 soldiers deployed across 10 countries and in three different battle theatres.

The site now occupied by Naval Air Station Pensacola has a colorful historical background dating back to the 16th century when Spanish explorer Don Tristan de Luna founded a colony here on the bluff where Fort Barrancas is now situated. Construction began in April 1826, and the Pensacola Navy Yard became one of the best equipped in the country.

Today, the Pensacola Naval Complex in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties employs more than 16,000 military and 7,400 civilian personnel.

Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Milton, Fla. is the busiest Naval Air Station in the world, responsible for an estimated 46 percent of the Naval Air Training Command's total flight time and over 10 percent of Navy and Marine Corps total flight time. Over 1,200 personnel complete their initial flight training every year. NAS Whiting Field and Training Air Wing Five have an outstanding and unmatched safe flying record. The station has served as a naval aviation training facility since it was established as a naval air auxiliary station in July 1943. Its present mission is to train student naval aviators in the primary and intermediate phases of fixed-wing aviation, and in the advanced phases of helicopter training.
