About 30 Holley by the Sea members attended the HBTS Meet and Greet May 29 at the recreation center. The event allowed association members a chance to meet the 10 candidates vying for four seats on the HBTS Board of Directors. Ballots were mailed June 2 and candidates (in the order they appear on the ballot) include:Yvonne Harper; Melinda Robertson; Kevin Lanier; Frank Myers; Bob Bower; DeAnne Shellenbarger; Ernest (Skip) Dalle-

Molle; Rodney (Rod) Danner; Jeff Roberts; and Andrew Adams. Mark Essert, whose name will appear on the ballot, withdrew his name for consideration on May 29. General Manager April Salazar moderated the event, which included two forms of question-andanswer segments. During the first hour, candidates were seated at tables allowing for association members to ask one-on-one questions. Members then submitted questions to Salazar, who posed the same question to each candidate. Questions The first question,“If the recall is

not successful, how will you work to make the board a smooth functioning entity?”elicited similar responses from the candidates with a few variations. The main theme was the need for the new board of directors to work together, treat each other and the membership with respect and communication. Harper said that because four seats will be filled, the dynamics of the board will naturally change and board members must treat one another with respect, communicate and discuss items, and make decisions“based on facts and logic, not emotions. We don’t all have

the answers … (the board) needs to work together.” Robertson said,“The present board hears, but (they) don’t listen.” Bower, also discussing communication, said,“The left hand should not know something the right hand doesn’t. I will not restrict the information flow, in or out.” He added that there should not be a rush to make decisions, especially those the membership considers controversial.“What’s the rush? We are an HOA, we don’t need to be full speed ahead all the time.” See Candidates Page 4

Blazes displace two Holley by the Sea families By Ashley Varese One fire confirmed arson, person of intereditor@navarrepress.com

Darrell Watkins and his wife, Jean, were getting the family ready for church June 7 when the smoke alarm started going off. “It’s a brand new home,”Watkins said,“so I thought maybe it was the batteries. I didn’t think it was a real fire.” He didn’t smell any smoke, but when they checked the garage, a small fire was burning on one side. Watkins tried to put it out, but he said by the time he got the hose, the flames already reached the ceiling. The family, which includes three boys and Jean’s mother, moved into the house, located at 2610 Hidden Creek Drive, just six weeks ago – and now their home – their“dream house”– is a total loss. But when he thinks about what could have happened if the fire started just minutes later, while the family was heading to church, with his three dogs home alone, he’s just grateful that everyone got out of the house safely. “People have been amazing,”Watkins said.“We have wonderful neighbors.” See Fires Page 4
