County to pay $1.4M in lawsuit

$173K playground in the works Improvements planned for Navarre area

By Romi White romiwhite@navarrepress.com

By Romi White romiwhite@navarrepress.com Santa Rosa County Commissioners quietly agreed March 9 to settle a lawsuit with Terhaar & Cronley, a Pensacola-based general contracting company with properties in Santa Rosa Industrial Park. The board is expected to formally approve the agreement today, which will cost roughly $1.4 million. Terhaar & Cronley filed a lawsuit in August 2010, suing the county and its former economic development agency, TEAM Santa Rosa, for breach of contract after it failed to construct a parking lot on county-owned land as planned. As a result, Terhaar & Cronley's former tenant, Clearwire, canceled its lease on a 35,000-square-foot industrial park facility on Industrial Boulevard. According to the mediation settlement agreement, within 30 days the Florida Association of Counties Trust, the county's insurer, must pay the company $100,000 cash.

Former principal pre-files for superintendent race

after it was erected near an abandoned convenience store on the west side of the highway, south of East Bay Boulevard. Williamson said he would like the signage relocated "to a more recognizable point," noting the U.S. Census identifies East River as a boundary for Navarre. Holley resident Donna Sue Harvell supported the relocation but asked that signage north of East River marking her community remain in its current location. The board also discussed submitting a letter to Northwest Florida Regional Transportation Planning Organization

Former longtime Santa Rosa County District Schools principal Stewart "Buddy" Powell pre-filed March 6 for the county’s 2016 superintendent Powell race. Powell is currently the only candidate for the seat currently held by Pace resident Tim Wyrosdick, who has not yet announced his intentions for the race. Powell taught for about 15 years at elementary, middle and high schools in Santa Rosa County before serving more than 15 years as an administrator at various schools in the district, including Gulf Breeze Elementary School and Milton High School. He left his post as principal of Hobbs Middle School in 2013 to work for the Escambia County, Alabama, school district. "I think the most critical area right now is employee morale," Powell said, adding, "I want to hit the ground running on this issue because it is so critical to our success."
